Andy Every Show. Welcome to the Tuesday edition. Baseball playoffs
are underway. We already have one winner in the books
today as Detroit wins at Cleveland. Games going on in
Chicago right now, a little bit later in New York

(00:42):
and around the rest of baseball over the next several days,
leading up to probably sometime in late October November, before
we crown a champion this year. INFL football, last night
saw two bad games and not very good teams, and
somehow they made the Monday night schedule. We'll get into
all of that. We've got college football to get to.

(01:03):
With some comments from Steve Sarkisian, we'll talk some more.
Ryder Cup We've got some stats on that coming up
in the six o'clock hour today, Assuming the Cubs game
against San Diego ends in the next two hours, Former
PGA Tour player in Valero, Texas Open champion David Ogrian
will join us. He'll talk Ryder Cup, but he's watching

(01:24):
the Cubs and Padres in person right now, so tough
life for him. And so as soon as the game's
over and he gets in his car and starts to
head south, I believe he's going to start the drive
home is according to the text he sent me. We'll
get his thoughts on the Ryder Cup and a few
other golf related stuff in the six o'clock hour. Jeff
Trailer at six o'clock Mark Vandermere about five seventeen or

(01:45):
so today. And we saw another gruesome football injury last
night in the NFL. Mike Martlet's the audio disseminator and
producer of this program. And not only is Tyreek Hill
out for the year. I have seen injuries like one,
but he suffered last night in the careers. That is
something that has to be very concerning for the Dolphins.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Yeah, it was a you know, very very gruesome injury,
and I would hate to say that it was very
nonchalant because it wasn't an aggressive tackle. It wasn't a
hard tackle, it wasn't a dirty tackle. It was just,
you know, the way. And when we talked to Doc
Garrett tomorrow, it's just unfortunately the way that he landed

(02:29):
your body, certain body parts are not supposed to bend
that way. And I believe that. I want to say
that he already had that tyreek Hill already had successful
surgery today. But my goodness, well.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
It's successful surgery. It could be a lot of things.
If the kneecap is in place and they got it
back together, and acls take about a nine to twelve
months to fix. But when you have that many multiple
things going on in your knee, you also have to
start worrying about nerve damage. The nerves go away and
you can't feel anything there and you can't run. That's

(03:03):
when careers tend to get shortened rather quickly. I recall
four years ago, three years ago at UAB when JT.
Clark for UTSA went high for a pass and as
soon as he landed, the whole team knew what happened
and they were calling for the training staff to run
to the UA B sideline and it turned out to

(03:25):
be something that could never be repaired back to the
way it was before and ended his career. And we
may see the same thing. Hopefully not, but that's certainly
a concern with as gruesome of an injury as Tyreek
Hill had last night. We'll get into all the NFL
games coming up in a bit. The NBA season tips
off on Monday with the Spurs preseason games. They take

(03:47):
on Guang Joe Long, the Chinese team that will be
in San Antonio for Monday Night's affair, and then they've
got four other NBA tilts in the exhibition slash preseason
however you want to look at. It used to be
the exhibition season, but the NBA doesn't like exhibitions, so
they call it the preseason. They don't count. What it does,

(04:11):
do I think, is it allows coaches to get the
blood flowing from the starters for about seven minutes, and
then also evaluate can these other guys play on an
NBA stage? And is there something I saw or didn't
see from the training camp or from the summer league.
And then about there's twenty one players on the Spurs

(04:34):
summer League. Our fall league schedule. A lot of them
are there for practice so that the Stars don't have
to practice as much, especially in contact situations, and they
have to get it down to fifteen and so six
will get waived, three will go to Austin, and two
will be on the back and forth train. That twelfth
and thirteenth man usually play on the main team for

(04:57):
some of the year, but are going back to Austin
when necessary. Now, one thing that we'll see, what would
be interesting to see between now and October twenty second,
is what the Spurs do to start the season. With
Dylan Harper and dearon Fox both have said they're likely
not going to be ready for the first week of
the season. They're targeting around November first to be able
to play. Do you put them on I don't know

(05:20):
what is it a ten day injured list or just
put them on the inter list bringing back whatever you
feel like it right.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Yeah, it'll just be probably like day to day.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
So that way you can have some of the G
league guys on the roster and they would get a
taste of what that's like for a little while until
they're able to play. But that means Steph Castle starts
the season as the point guard, and technically, on paper,
there's three point guards. There's Fox and Castle and Dylan Harper.
They're all going to play together. There's no way they

(05:50):
can't not play together. And I don't think that's a problem.
When you have three guys that can play the point,
you don't have to have just one guy that's a
point and one guy that's a back cup point. The
fact that you have versatility is a good thing. But
I will caut us this. I think that I said
this like yesterday. I think the start of the season matters.
I think if you can get off to a good

(06:11):
start and win seventy percent of your games in November
and December, you're going to be ahead of the curb.
By the rest of the of the of the teams
that are, you're going to be in contention with, hopefully
for playoff spots. And so if you can win seven
out of ten, fourteen out of twenty and that gets
shipped somewhere around January first, I think that's a huge

(06:31):
start for a team. And so I hope these guys
aren't out for very long. I hope this is these
aren't injuries that nag them for the rest of their
of the of the season. Obviously, Dylan had the thumb
injury on the shooting drill in practice, and Deer and
Fox came up the other day and said that he
had a hamstring issue, and so we'll see how he

(06:54):
responds to all of that, and I guess the idea
is to not play them right now and not get
them to too much involved in contact so that it's
not a nagging injury throughout the year. We'll talk about
that coming up in a little bit. I've got a
stat of the day on the Ryder Cup. We'll share
that with you in the back half of this hour.
The long Horns go to Florida to take on the

(07:16):
Gators in the swamp. Florida could resurrected at season. This
is a game that Texas has to have. They have,
oh you coming up next week, and we don't know.
I can't imagine John mttire is going to play until
at least the end of October, if not into November.
But we'll see how Texas fairs this week at Florida.
I think this is a big game for them to
go in there and make sure that they don't let

(07:38):
a Florida's team that's struggling. Stop struggling. This is a
this is a big opportunity for Texas on the road
in the SEC.

Speaker 2 (07:47):
Well, it's it's definitely you know, the start of SEC
play and for not that the not that the Longhorns
care what the national media has to say, but if
they do struggle, or if they potentially do lose, then
you're gonna see all of the national pundits sit here
talking about that Texas was overrated and that arch Manning is,

(08:09):
you know, in his actual fourth game of being QB
one a bus and all of the negativity. You know,
you're gonna start seeing that everywhere. But you know, like
I tell you, every single game, even with arch Manning,
I take every single game with appropriate fear. That's how
I go into every single game with appropriate fear because,

(08:33):
like Jeff Trailer said, yeah, if they get to the
college football playoffs and you go play Michigan in the
Big House, more than likely five million dollar butt whipping.
But you never know how the ball is going to bounce.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
Yeah, And that's the thing is you can let Florida
resurrected season if you don't take care of business with them.
Very early, and I don't think there's any any in
the years past you would look ahead to big games.
I mean, Oklahoma's got Can't State this weekend, and Kent
State's the one hundred and thirty six best team of
one hundred and thirty six teams or one thirty four
whatever it is in the FBS, So oh, you's got

(09:08):
a much better shot of looking ahead. They're going to
be playing with Hawkins their backup quarterback, and they could
probably beat them with a couple of JV teams as well.
Maybe some high school teams could be Kent State as
bad as they've been, But this is a big week
for both teams to take care of business as often
and as quickly as they can. And understand, Florida's got

(09:30):
SEC caliber players, so just stop playing very well together
right now. Mark vander Meer will join us. The Texans
got their first win this week over Tennessee, and even better,
further from the Texans standpoint, they're going to go into
Baltimore next week, and this is a game Baltimore team
that I think five weeks ago we thought there's no
way Houston wins this game, and now there's no way

(09:52):
Houston loses this game with all the injuries that the
Ravens have, plus Lamar Jackson now has a ham e
isue and he may not play this weekend. So this
is a golden opportunity for the Texans to kind of
rite the ship a little bit.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
Yeah, what looked as a potential of going Ohen what
Ohen Ohen four? After the Jacksonville game. Let's see one, two, three, four, five, six?
Oh wow, we're already in Oh wait, sorry, I was
looking at week five coming up? Yeah, week five coming up? Yeah,
you were looking at this potentially saying with as you know,

(10:26):
let's be honest with as bad as they've been playing
this season, after the after the Texans game or after
the Titans game, you're potentially looking at Ohen four oh
and five heading into the bye week, and then you know,
is potentially Demiko Ryan start on the hot seat? You know,

(10:46):
do we start getting worried about that's wrong with CJ. Stroud.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
I don't like fans and coaches who criticize their their
team's success when they have injuries that they're out of
their control. Now, Unfortunately, sometimes you still get fired when
your team is completely beat up. But Demiko Ryans was
Coach of the Year, or should have been the last
couple of years. Demiko Ryans didn't forget how to coach.

(11:13):
If I've tried to say this to people for years,
if my players are better than your players, coaching is
somewhat irrelevant. Yes, you've got to get them organized. Yes
you have to have a plan. But if my roster
is depleted with injury and your players become better than mine,
I can scheme you all I want. I can do

(11:33):
the things different things all I want. But at the
end of the day, you have to play bad in
order for me to win. It's just like the Texas
A and m UTSA game. What if Chakvan Rogers gets
that pick and takes it in for a pick six,
and UTSA has the lead in the third quarter of
that games as good as A and M has been
this year, do they start to get a little bit nervous,

(11:55):
Does the caller get a little bit tighter? Does UTSA
get something else and somehow managed to win an impossible game. Well,
that didn't happen, but that's the way that bad teams
beat the better team. Texas A and M and UTSA
could play a one hundred times, and Texas A and
M would win ninety nine of them. And it's the
same thing when you have a team that you've gone

(12:16):
to playoffs with, maybe you've gone to a super Bowl with,
and then the next year the owner gets upset with
you because you didn't win again. And he looked, dude,
my quarterback was out, my top wide receiver was out.
We lost our running back. We had three offensive line
on the DL. We had three linebackers that couldn't play either.
How am I supposed to win with eight guys out?
So John Harbaugh didn't forget out of coach. Tamiko Ryans

(12:37):
didn't forget out of coach. But I don't care how
good your players are. You can't win with inferior talent
unless the other team helps you out by playing poorly
and turns it over. That said, I'm going to get
to a quote that Aaron Glenn had to say today
about our last night after the Jets loss, and I
agree with him, But what is he going to do
about it? That'll be a part of our NFL discussion.

(12:57):
We'll get to all of that coming up. And the
Feasia Collier call out Kathy Engelbert. She responds and I
will side with the fisha on this because I've got
some thoughts on the lack of leadership at the WNBA level.
That's all coming up. It is four thirteen. It's the
Andy Everage show on the ticket

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
