Speaker 1 (00:05):
So we're about twenty minutes away from the Jeff Tayler
radio show UTSA taken on Rice. This weekend homecoming, it's
a big Friday and Saturday night with the homecoming Hall
of Fame banquet on Friday, and then of course the
game on Saturday, and all the Hall of Fame inductees
will be honored at the game on Saturday as well.
I don't pay a lot of attention to message boards

(00:27):
and fan blogs. I think it's kind of like a forum.
I guess if I didn't have a talk show, I
would probably watch it and look at it more. But
I don't necessarily always think that this is the gospel.
But I did see something the other day I actually
earlier to day about Bill Belichick in his situation at
North Carolina where things have really struggled there and there's

(00:51):
according to that blog, there's a lot of dissension. It
would be kind of interesting if Bill Belichick decides this
isn't what he wants to do or it's not in
his wheelhouse. As I've said before, when you have done
something as well as you've had at the pro level
because you've had better players and because you've had the
greatest in Tom Brady, and because you've had guys like

(01:13):
Randy Moss and Gronk and players that they don't really
need a lot of coaching, they don't need a lot
of motivation, They just need a plan. They're alpha guys
that know exactly what they want to do. They get
it and there's going to be a little bit of
contention in the relationship all the time, but they figure
out a way to get it done. And I think
that Bill Belichick has struggled since he lost Tom Brady,

(01:34):
and obviously it was time for Brady to move on.
I'm also not a big fan of the fact that
he's not letting New England Patriots players and scouts come
and watch their practices, and that after Drake May had
a big win because he plays for the Patriots, he
did not want that. On North Carolina football social media,
that's kind of strange. You're trying to recruit more and

(01:56):
more players to come to North Carolina and you're also
trying to get your players to go to the NFL,
and now there's one less team that may consider drafting them.
We talked a little bit earlier about the ou Texas game,
and it's it's certainly special. And I actually get to
watch a little bit of this because we don't go
on the aarill four to thirty on Saturday, so it'll
be on in the booth and hopefully it's done by

(02:16):
the time our game starts at six point thirty. But
I'll get a chance to see a few plays here
and there. And I think the key for OU is
can Michael Hawkins actually get the job done. I cannot
imagine that John Matteer is going to play in this game.
He's been two weeks removed from surgery. I think that
the back half of the season is way more important.
OU has done what they were supposed to do and

(02:38):
kind of expected to do. They get a mollague if
they don't beat Texas. Maybe Michael Hawkins has a terrific
game and they come up with a big win. Maybe
they don't, but they still have to be able to
hold their own against the rest of the teams coming up,
and that gauntlet includes South Carolina and Ole Miss in
the next couple of weeks, and then it really gets
hard going to Tennessee and Alabama. So I would much

(03:00):
rather see Mattiers set out a couple of more games
and be ready for Mississippi or certainly Alabama and Tennessee
and not risk injury again. But this is a muss
game for Texas. I don't think you can get a
third loss with more tough games coming up down the
road and still have the goals of being in the
College Football Playoff. UTSA and Rice, and I think this
is a big game for UTSA. The key to this

(03:22):
game is always against an option team, is to take
care of the football and to make sure you get
them off the field. They have thirty two minutes a
game in time of possession and that's twenty fourth best
in the nation. They rink up there with all the
academy schools that run triple option as well. It's a
little bit different version than some of the other teams

(03:42):
that do. Rice is beating the teams they should beat.
I don't know that they've had any big surprises this year,
but UTSA will hopefully get some of that Alamodeme magic
again and take care of business. I know that this
probably isn't a big game on everybody's roster, but I'm
going to be sneaking a little bit of a peak
when I can. I'll be at the Hall of Fame
banquet for UTSA on Friday night, but South Florida and

(04:05):
North Texas have a Friday night game. USF remember being
Boise and Florida at the beginning of the season and
they voted. Their only other loss, I think is to Miami.
So South Florida has been a really good team. They've
got a high paying roster. I think their athletes are
getting somewhere in the neighborhood of nine ten million dollars.
North Texas has been surprisingly better than I thought they

(04:28):
would be. They have fixed that their situation from last year.
North Texas I think is undefeated right now and that's
going to be a really big matchup. And if North
Texas can win that game, they start putting themselves in
the same conversation with South Florida, with Tulane and with
Memphis to win the American Conference. So we'll be keeping

(04:48):
an eye on that, and the outcome of that game
is likely to determine when UTSA and North Texas will play,
as the conference has flexed that game, and normally we
find out our our start time twelve days in advance,
we're not going to know till the weekend, and we'll
get a six day notice as to win. That UTSA
North Texas game is a week from Saturday. Now that

(05:11):
Florida came up with the big win over Texas this weekend,
their next opponent is Texas A and M. And Texas
A and M is now getting ready to go into
that stretch. They are now going to play their third
straight home game against the conference opponent and our second.
They got Mississippi State after that, and then they got
three on the road and this is the one that
you got to get. Now, Florida's got to have a

(05:33):
ton of confidence after coming from coming back to beat
Texas when nobody thought they would. I think a lot
of people thought the Florida season was dead and gone.
It is certainly not. I've been telling you for a
long time that Florida's got good players. Billy Napier didn't
forget how to coach them. He didn't forget how to
coach from his times at Louisiana, and Florida's going to

(05:54):
come into College station and there's a big lot of
importance on this game. Texas A and M is I
think one the games that they should win. But a
lot of Texas A and M teams in past years
would not be five and zero with this schedule. They
would have figured out a way somewhere along the way
to mess it up and to lose a game, and
A and M now has to make sure they take
care of business against Florida and Mississippi State before they

(06:16):
have their road They're three in a row on the road,
and I haven't pulled up the schedule yet, but I
think it's LSU and Arkansas and somebody else in that
mix that is a little bit more difficult for them
to keep that unbeaten streak alive. So those are some
important situations for them to come up. And I think
that Florida A and M game this weekend is going

(06:38):
to be a lot more exciting than people thought that
it was going to be when we were talking about
it two or three weeks ago after Florida struggles at
the beginning of the year. Remember, anytime that SEC teams
are playing, there's basically the top three or four in
the SEC. And I still put Texas in the top
three or four from a talent standpoint, but after that,

(06:59):
everybody all and the SEC is pretty even, and I
don't wouldn't would not be shocked if Florida won this game.
I wouldn't be shocked if A and M wins this game.
This will should be a fun matchup coming up this weekend,
and it's been really important for A and M to
win these home games before that three game stretch on
the road. All Right, we've got a baseball update coming up.

(07:20):
The Yankees are out in the second inning, so they're
going to the third down one to nothing. Schlitler not
pitching poorly, but did give up a run in the
first inning on a Guerrero hit. Well, keep tho you
keep you updated on that, and a cool story from
the Seattle game last night. They did not win tonight,

(07:41):
but they did last night, and we'll discuss that coming
up in the last segment of the show.
