Speaker 1 (00:04):
Thank you for spinning your afternoon with us as we
traverse through all the sports news of the day. Only
a four day week, we have tomorrow's show, and then
we get to celebrate the fourth of July. However it
is that you wish to do so on on Friday responsibly,
all right. Damian Lillard is now a free agent and
the Milwaukee Bucks are on the hook for twenty two

(00:25):
million dollars over the next five years twenty two times five.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
But it's a little bit more than that. There's some numbers.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
I think he gets up to a total of one
hundred and thirteen million that will be dead money on
Milwaukee's cap.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
And because of the.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
Provision that is in the Collective Aria Agreement where you
can stretch this out over time and stretch it, it
doesn't allow you to just you know, stick it all
onto one, one or two years, the Bucks will still
have some flexibility to be able to field a roster.
Brian Windhorse was on one of the million shows that
he's on this week. I think he's on anybody that

(00:59):
asks him to be on, and he says it's because
that this is a Grand Slam idea for Dame and
a terrible situation for Milwaukee. Now, while I understand it's
a good situation for Dame and he can pick and
choose where he wants to go once he's healthy, I
don't understand why it's a bad deal for Milwaukee, because
Milwaukee is Milwaukee has two decisions to make. One stay

(01:24):
relevant and keep you Honus or fire sale and suck
for three or four years and still pay Dame for
fifty three fifty five million dollars this year to not
really play until at least after the All Star break,
if not even until the playoffs next year, and likely
may not even be a playoff team. So basically, to me,
Milwaukee could go out there and say we're going to
trade on us for a bunch of money that equals

(01:45):
his salary and draft picks, and there's only a few
teams left that have the draft capital to make that worthwhile.
And I don't think the Spurs are are interested anymore,
and neither is Houston, so I don't think that's an option. So, Okay,
we're going to be honest. Seannas decides he wants to stay,
Jannis is gonna also have to understand that while his
friend and the guy that he wanted to get from

(02:07):
the get a couple of years ago. And Damian Lillard
is now significantly older, significantly hurt. No guarantee that he's
gonna come back healthy from an Achilles' injury, and it
may take a while before they can find somebody to
replace him. They were they were able to uh sign
Myles turn Myles Turner, and then.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
They signed a guard, didn't they They didn't uh uh
Gary Trent Junior.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
I believe, Okay, So they've got to find somebody too
to take that spot at the point guard until Lillard's back.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Uh or if that's what if that's the way that
they were going to go.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
They've chosen to move off of Damian Lillard and to
not count on him into the future.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
Well, here's the ultimate curve ball, because like I said
in the last hour, all of these are just agreed upon.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
They're not set in stone. Well they will be.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
What if at the last minute, like July fifth, eleven
fifty nine, Giannis decides to say, you know what, I
don't want to be here, trade me. Does Miles Turner say,
wait a second, I know I agreed. No, Because he
hasn't put pen to paper yet, he can still.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Yeah, that's what.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
That's what Jordan uh DeAndre Jordan did a few years ago, remember.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
Uh, yes, for the MAVs.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
And it's what And it's also what happened to the
Spurs a few years ago with I believe it was
uh which Morris brother was It was it Marquise Morris?

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Mark? Yeah? Or Mark?

Speaker 3 (03:36):
It was Marcus Morris. Marcus Morris renegged on a deal
and then you know the rest was history. So there
is there. Until penn is put to paper, nothing is
official yet. I'll just put it that well, and I
could see that because I've heard that as well. I've
heard that from where does Myles Turner go? Because Indiana
can't pay him? Actually, Indiana can pay him. That's why

(04:00):
it was a little bit of a surprise that he left.
Can they pay him what Milwaukee is paying him? I
believe so because they were under the like they're not
hurting for cap room. Uh. And I'm he's been he's
one of the longest tenured pacers if I if at
least what nine or ten years off the top of
my head.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
But because again he would be your own free agent.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
You're you're allowed to Yeah, you're allowed to go over
the cap and after that that run that they had.
I know he Miles Turner at time didn't play well,
but why would you not want to, you know, possibly
re sign your your your big guy. That's the only
thing unless negotiations just went poor and they decided to say, hey,

(04:43):
we only think you're worth like ninety million, not one
hundred and seven or whatever. But uh, you know, there
could be an opportunity. Maybe he decides to say if
if that happens, maybe he gives the old two one
to OHO call and be like, hey, uh yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
Well I don't think I'll play with a The simpers
are going to start running out of money at some
point too.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
It's not our money. We'll be fine. Not our money. Yeah,
I'm sure that they just do deferred payments at this point.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
The when is the NBA going to pull that off?
Because they haven't joined that that Oh it's it's with
the astronomical salaries. I would think it's got to come
sooner than later. But we'll see. But anyway, I don't
see where this is a bad deal from Milwaukee, because
Milwaukee's out of options. If you keep, if you're going
to keep, you honus and you're not going to be

(05:30):
able to sign free agents and mid level exception players
do and do the things that you want to do
to get your roster ready to be at least somewhat competitive,
because look at the East next year. Boston's in the
midst of a fire sale and they don't have Jason
Tatum yep. So it's Jalen Brown and dry White and
a cast of whoever they put around them, So they're
not going to win sixty one games. You've got Philadelphia

(05:52):
that could be there, but they could be as MB
then that's a big could be So maybe you're not
worrying about there right now. The two best teams in
the East going into next year are likely New York
and Cleveland, and a third team is likely Orlando with
the roster that they're building. So if you're Milwaukee and
you're saying, we still want to be competitive, we still

(06:13):
want to be in the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
The only way we can get.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
There is to jennison the money off of Lillard and
cut that down to almost a third a year of
what we're paying him and spend it over five years
and hopefully somebody signs him to a two year free
agent contract, so that twenty two million becomes eighteen million,
and that way we have a little bit less We

(06:36):
have a little bit less money that we have to
give him off of towards our salary cap. So I
don't see where it's a bad deal for Milwaukee. But
this is also predicated on the fact that Yannis stays.
And even if Jannis comes to the Bucks in the
next day or two and says where I want out,
I want to go somewhere else, they're running out of

(06:57):
places to send him in order to get back what
they need for him for them to completely rebuild.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Yeah, I look at it from from two perspectives.

Speaker 3 (07:07):
I can see where it could be a potential bad thing,
but also a good thing because in this again, in
this particular scenario, they they do the stretch provision with Dame,
and they at least are giving Giannis the implications of saying, hey,
it's easier for us to continue to try to build

(07:27):
a team around you, and we're not so strapped for
cash with Dame being off the books, or having to
pay Dame one hundred and ten million dollars in the
next two years, instead of it going to be you
and Joe Smith from the G League. Now we can
at least maybe go get a and I'm just throwing random, like,

(07:50):
we could potentially go get a Chris Paul, somebody that
would at least still have value that could help.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
And it's not just you. It's still going to be you.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
And instead of it being ninety five percent of you
carrying the payload, maybe it's only sixty five percent because
we could possibly go get you know, a ten year
veteran or a twelve year veteran to kind of just
come in here for a few years to help out.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
But if you know, if.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
You're in the other scenario of hey, if you wanted
to just be you, that's fine, but here's what you're
gonna get. Because we're gonna be strapped for this for
these next two years.

Speaker 2 (08:30):
We can't add anybody.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
Well, I from my standpoint, I'm surprised Jannis didn't decide
he wanted to leave long before this, because the roster
is pretty bleak as to who Milwaukee has. But again,
if you are going to move him, Milwaukee can't just
do a salary dump and try to get the money
and and expiring contracts in order from Milwaukee to be

(08:55):
decent again. Three, four or five years from now. They've
got to build from the draft. And to me, a
trade if they were going to move on from your
honest would have happened before the draft, so they could
have been Brooklyn and had multiple draft picks and to
build a roster that they can develop going forward. Now,
how much does Doc want to be a developer instead
of just coaching a veteran team. That's and Milwaukee's paying

(09:17):
seventeen coaches is anyway, so I don't know that they
want to pay another one until those those contracts are up.
So the Bucks are still because of the injuries in Indiana,
the injuries in Boston, they can still be a playoff
team next year, but only if they can find the
pieces to build around Giannis and to see see what
success they can have from him.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
And again I'm all for the players getting as much
money as they want, but then they also have to
understand that they are hindering if they decide to go
this route of I'm going to get as much as
I can, I'm not going to worry about the rest.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Of the team.

Speaker 3 (09:55):
This is the consequences. You want to make fifty five
sixty million dollars like.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
Shay is in five years seventy two, let's be the
last year's eighty two.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Oh Jesus Christ.

Speaker 1 (10:06):
Then you have to understand, yeah, you're making a millionaire
game in twenty thirty.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
You are definitely making it.

Speaker 3 (10:12):
If you decide to say I want out, you're making
it a hell of a lot harder.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
Making it harder to move you, and you're making it
harder for a team to be placed around you. Exactly
because basically, now the salary cap this year is one
fifty five, and let's say five years from now, it
goes up eight million a year, so it's one ninety
or something like that. In twenty thirty, you're still taking
up almost half of the salary cap with a one
player or two.

Speaker 3 (10:38):
In this particular case, if Dame was still on the team,
I mean him and Dame are making at that point
like one hundred and ten million dollars. Congratulations, you have
forty million to work.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
That salary cap is.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
Going to go up next year and next and the
next year over the five years, so the hit against
the cap with Dame is going to be a little
bit less each year from a from a percentage standpoint,
until they finally get that money off their books, and
then again, hopefully somewhere along the line he signs for
a year or two and that helps you out in
those years that he's that he's playing. Otherwise they have

(11:09):
to pay the whole amount. But with Oklahoma City, we're
going to see the window. The windows still open for
Oklahoma City, although I think they're going to get everybody's
best effort next year, so they're going to have to sign.
They've signed shade of the extension. Next up is JDB.
They have to make a decision on homegrin And then

(11:29):
in twenty thirty, when Sheha's making eighty two million, he
may be the only guy making any money and everybody.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
Else may be rookies.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
And that's the penance for becoming the highest paid player
in the league, as Shaye likely will by that time.
All Right, the NL All Stars are being announced right
now for next week's baseball. We're going to talk about that,
and if they give us the al list, we'll do
that as well. And also evaluating talent, and just because

(11:57):
we think a player's good doesn't necessarily mean that the
people who are paid millions of dollars i e. General
managers and coaches that they think that they're a fit
for a certain team. Those discussions coming up. It's the
indie everage show on the ticket
