Speaker 1 (00:03):
Last night, Oklahoma City had to come from behind to
beat Denver. As Denver tries to figure out what it's
going to do in its future, one of the things
they have to look at is their bench. I think
the Nuggets have one of the worst plus minuses that
we've ever seen when Nikola Jokic goes to the bench,
and unfortunately for him and for the Nuggets, he can't
(00:24):
play forty eight minutes.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Now. Last night, in the first half.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
They stayed pretty well close to where they were and
maintained their lead when Yokich went to the bench, But
when Oklahoma City made its big run and then Yokich
came back in the game, it was a little bit
too late for Denver to come back. I think Oklahoma
City's got the more athletic team. They're a little bit
more not necessarily physical. I think Denver probably has the
(00:49):
physical edge, but they have the legs to be able
in the bench, to be able to take care of Denver.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Now.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
I said earlier in the week and last week as well,
that I just don't see den for losing a game six,
an elimination game at home, and I'm kind of pretty
much sticking to that. I do think Oklahoma said he
will need a seventh game to win this and I
expect both games to be close. But the caveat all
make about a potential game six loss for the Nuggets
is how fresh Jokich can be come the last four
(01:20):
minutes of the game. I really don't think there's a
blowout in this game if there was. If there is,
oh that'll be surprising, especially the way the two teams
have mostly played. But I think that I think Jokic
is going to have to rest, you know, twelve fourteen
game minutes, play thirty four to thirty six minutes to
be effective. And can Denver stay close enough for him
(01:41):
to make any kind of a difference down the stretch
and they couldn't last night.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Yeah, And you know, he played the most minutes out
of everybody on both teams.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
He played forty four total minutes.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
That's not a lot of rest, and four minutes off
the floor was enough to get him get him done.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Yeah. So I just.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
I don't know if having Michael Malone still there would
it make any difference whatsoever When it comes to maybe
he deeps, he digs into the bench a little bit,
and I know, like they have DeAndre Jordan, you know,
but DeAndre Jordan's like he's like Al Horford. He's older
than dirt. But even if you he still has the
(02:22):
availability if nothing else, he's a big guy. Even if
it's just hey, we're gonna toss you in there for
three minutes, four minutes, do a couple of fouls, maybe
get a rebound or two, just so Jokic gets a breather.
They are just, They're just they're so top heavy. That's
that's the problem is they're so top heavy with the
with the starting five, And like you mentioned, Michael Porter
(02:44):
Junior is playing with the with a busted wing. So
as much as I appreciate his his will and determination
to be out there for the team, when you only
have one good arm, you're at that point becoming a
detriment to the team. But they just don't have anybody
else besides Russell Westbrook to replace them.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Well, I'm gonna look at d I'll share with you
Denver's bench. They played Peyton Watson fifteen minutes, Westbrook played twenty.
I think he could play a little bit more, and
they played Jillian Strather ten yep. Do you have any
confidence whatsosoever in Dario Sarich. Apparently they don't. I'm gonna
(03:26):
mess this name up, but I think it's Zeke Najee
maybe of Vlado concar and DeAndre Jordan and Jalen Pickett
is the rest of their bench. And on the other side,
the bench that Oklahoma City brings to you is Cason Wallace,
lottery pick, Aaron Wiggins, decent player, Isaiah Joe, Alex Carusa.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
And Jalen Williams.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
So they they bring a five person rotation off the bench,
and if you look at their minutes, I'd have to
do some quick math here, but they gave you about
a half the amount of minutes that the Thunders starting
lineup did. And to be able to have that, and
I'll show you every player on Oklahoma City's starting lineup
(04:10):
was plus in the plus minus and every player with
the exception of Alex Caruso and Isaiah Joe was negative.
I mean it was also plus for Oklahoma City. So
the Thunder, of the ten players that they played, they
had eight guys that were either zero of the plus
minus or ahead, and only Alex Caruso played twenty four
minutes and Isaiah Joe played five were the only ones
(04:33):
that nor negative plus minus. That's the analytical way of
looking at these games. And the Thunders simply are able
to put players on the floor when the Stars go
to the bench, and those players don't lose the lead,
or if they're behind, they don't get further behind.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
And maybe sometimes they even cut into that lead.
Speaker 1 (04:50):
To have Jalen Williams come off the bench and be
a plus seven and case and Wallace to come off
the bench and be a plus two is something that
Denver doesn't have. Then when you look at Denver, all
of their players off the bench where minus three, minus one,
minus eleven.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Yeah, so and it winds up totaling for sixty eight
total minutes for the bench when it comes to the
two hundred and forty Yeah for the Thunder.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
So it's it's they are.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
They are what the Spurs used to be in seven
and thirteen and fourteen you could run ten twelve deep.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
Well, they brought Manu off the bench. He was always
the sixth man. You had Boris d you had Patty Mills.
There was a year that you had Gary Neil. You
had guys that you could trust and not screw it
up when the starters needed a rest. Yeah, Denver doesn't
have that right now, and that's part of their problem. Now,
I was listening to I think it was Dan Today
(05:44):
maybe calling he had somebody on. I didn't get the
name because it was in the middle of the interview
when I started listening. Now, they were talking about Joe
Mizulo in Boston, and this Boston Celtics team is likely
to get blown up a little bit, even though they're
going to have to. They're nothing they can do with
Tatum because he's not going to be a commoditie that
anybody's going to invest in until they see how he
(06:05):
recovers from the Achilles. But Drew Holliday's expensive and expiring contract.
But well he's there, but he got Drew Holliday got
old in a hurry. They're trying, They're going to try
to move Holiday. Porzingis likely not back. Al Horford likely inspiring.
Al Horford likely not back. He's been in the league
(06:25):
twenty years. Almost more likely to tire if he unless
some of their team is going to give him, like
the veat minimum, to go be a backup somewhere. Yeah,
I mean, I wouldn't mind having Al Horford as a
veat minimum backup in my tenth or eleventh guy.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
I think that would he can give you.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
He's not the banger that I talked about that you
need because he's more of an outside threat. But you
know he's he's okay. He a backup, back up to
the backup center.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
He could be maybe what Gorgay Jang was a couple
of years ago. It's the veteran guy to show some
of the rookies here's how you operate in the league,
and when he gets his off at.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
That community that Kevin Willis was that way with his
burst for years.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
But here's the difference with Kevin Willis. Kevin Willis was
like a Greek god.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Even at three years old.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
He had a donna's bobby.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
He could he could still go out there and if
he wanted to, he could give you some minutes.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
Al Horford and Drew Holiday just got old in a hurry. Well,
Al Horford's been old for a while.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
Holiday got old as soon as they traded him from Milwaukee.
But the discussion was is Joe Mizulu's job on the line,
and whoever it was says, I don't think so, because
you can't coach miss the shots. What Boston has done
all year long, is play this way. Fifty plus three
is a game. We got a bunch of good shooters,
(07:44):
let's go shoot them and the playoffs. Sometimes they try
to take that away from you and force you into
doing something you're not comfortable with. And this was the
discussion I had last weekend on Monday. Just because you
want to be able to dribble past the three point
line and shoot up mid range two doesn't mean that
you can do it efficiently when you never practice it,
when you never do it, and you don't have any
(08:04):
plays for that. And so if Brad Stevens is going
to interview another coach to come in and take over
for Missoula, how do you.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Want to play?
Speaker 1 (08:14):
The first question to ask is what's your offensive philosophy?
Speaker 2 (08:17):
And if that coach, if it's.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Jenkins from they used to be at Memphis, or it's
Mike Budd, he says, well, the problem you guys have
is you don't practice enough twos. You're not a candidate.
You're not a candidate. We're not going to play that way.
Brad Stevens clearly wants to play shooting fifty three.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
It's a game.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
If he didn't he wouldn't draft players and acquire players
that are shooters, and he would tell Joe Mozilla, let's
try a different game plan.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
And if Joe didn't like it, to go get another coach.
This is a.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
Collaborative effort between Missoula and Brad Stevens to play a
certain way, and that's the way Boston's going to play.
And now that they don't have Tatum, I just don't
see how they're going to be able to finish. They
come back from the from the and beat the Knicks.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Well, it's it's it's definitely gonna be hard for them
to possibly do that, especially with Christops Porzingis, I guess,
still battling whatever potential illness he has. But this team
right now, Andy is clearly not going to be the
same team that rolls out next year because I heard
earlier they're in the second Apron. And if they decide
(09:26):
to bring this team back next year, because remember they're
up for sale, the Celtics are up for sale, it's
going to cost them. I heard Bobby Marx talk about it.
Because they're in the second Apron, it will cost them
about a half a billion dollars in luxury tax and
second apron penalties to bring this team completely back, because
(09:46):
if I'm not mistaken, he said, for every three million
dollars they're over in the second apron, it's like an
extra five or fifteen million dollars added on top of them.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
And they have been purchased by a guy named Bill
Chizzem who's the managing partner at Symphony Technology Group.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
It's like six point one point one billion is what
they bought.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
So I'm guessing he's got some deep pockets to be
able to throw that money and get that.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
But half a billion dollars is you know, But I
think you as soon as you buy a team.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Well yeah, I think that you've already invested six billion
dollars and now you have to write this big luxury tax.
I think most of those players are not going to
be there, and whatever they can trade, they're going to trade,
uh and or if they have team options, those team
options are not going to get exercised. I haven't looked
that deep at the Boston roster to find out what
they're going to do, But this group of Celtics may
(10:40):
be done after tonight, and that team reconstructed a little
bit going forward in the future yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
I mean the only one team option that they particularly
have is JD. Davison or David Davison for next next year.
He's the only team option.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (10:56):
The only ones that would be coming off the books
going to the next year would be al Orford at
nine point five and then Luke Cornett at two million.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
But those guys aren't going to win any championships for you. No,
the biggest I would say, you got Jalen Brown and
Data to be back at some point, and those are
your two bel cows with money and on offense.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
But maybe maybe they decide to move off of Jalen Brown,
Well you know he's.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Going to be making how bad? How bad? How bad?
Do you want to tank? But here do you want
to here's the question.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Do you want to win games and still be competitive
or do you just want to blow it up and
be a lottery team for three years.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
Well, here's the argument to that is, yes, they have
the dangling x Bryan expiring contract that is Christopsporzingis, which
is goes to thirty point seven million next year. But
if you just want to try to get under the
cap as well, there's one particular player that basically player
for player that would work.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
And this other.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Team needs a bunch of picks. What does Boston have.
They have picked Kevin Durant to the Celtics for Jalen Brown.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
That's okay.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
You get the fifty three million dollars which matches the salary,
and it's only for one year, and you wait until
Jason Tatum gets back after All Star after All Star weekend.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Well okay, but to me, you're just trading one big
contract for another with that scenario.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
But it's only it's only for one year, whereas Jalen
Brown is still goes through twenty eight to twenty nine.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
I don't know how Brad Stevens and this new ownership
group will do business, but to me, Jalen Brown and
Jason Tatum kind of should be Celtics for life. Basically,
they should be the Larry Birds, the Kevin McHale's. They
should be the foundation for how they do things. And
next year the two contracts together a one hundred and
(12:46):
eight million dollars one hundred and seven million dollars. Yeah,
but they they If they can move off of Holiday,
that helps, If they move off of porzingis that helps.
Derek White's got a bunch of money coming to him
for a while, al hort for going away. Pet Pritchard
doesn't make a lot of money in terms of basketball numbers,
but they certainly have to do something with Holiday and Porzingis.
(13:08):
But the point of my discussion on this to begin
with is it doesn't matter who they go after. The
philosophy is not changing. This is Brad Stevens analytical philosophy,
and Joe Mizula can't fix Jason Tatum's ankle and his
achilles overnight, and he can't keep guys who normally made
threes all season long from missing them in the playoffs.
(13:30):
So if you want to play I don't know that
Joe Mozilla is a great in game adjuster, but if
you're asking him to adjust as something they don't ever
practice and they don't have plays for, because that's not
their philosophy, that's on the culture of the team more
so than.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
It is on the coach.
Speaker 3 (13:44):
I agree, but I'm just saying Kevin Durant would fit
perfectly in that offense though.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
Yeah, but because you actually have a.
Speaker 3 (13:50):
Guy that can shoot threes, but also on any given
day he can shoot a mid range jumper, he doesn't
need the rest of the team to help him out
to create his own shot when it's a mid range.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Here's the question you have to ask over the next
four years, Brown and Tatum fifty three and fifty four million,
fifty seven and fifty eight million, sixty one and sixty
two million, sixty four and sixty seven million. Can you
afford to have two sixty million dollar players on your
roster or do you have to trade one of them
for two thirty million dollar guys so that you have
some depth? And that'd be that one of the questions
(14:21):
that Boston has to answer. More coming up, it's the
Andy Everage Show.
Speaker 2 (14:24):
From the ticket
