Speaker 1 (00:03):
We got more basketball stuff to get to here in
just a little bit as well. This weekend, starting on Saturday,
it's the kickoff of the twenty twenty five CCA Star
Fishing Tournament. You can win a lot of prizes if
you get involved with that and joining us on the
program is Ryan Town's from CCA Star, the Coastal Conservation Association. Ryan,
(00:27):
thanks for being with us. Tell us about what happens
this weekend. We get to fish and make some money
and make some prizes.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Oh, we sure do. Thanks for having me on. It's
always a pleasure talking with you guys.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
So this Saturday, May twenty fourth, at six am, the
thirty six annual CCA.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Texas Star Tournament kicks off.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
It's over two million dollars in prizes and scholarships and
eighteen boats, five trucks, five UTVs that will be given
away at the end of the summer. We got a
lot of rises ready to be handed out and it's
a family fishing, fun event for all ages.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
So, okay, you have to join CCA Star to be
able to be eligible for all this, So take us
through how people do that.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
You do so in order to be eligible for any
of the two million dollars in prizes and three hundred
and twenty five thousand scholarships. You're gonna have to first
become a CCA member, which is thirty dollars, and then
actually sorry, it's forty, and then you have to do
a CCA Star tournament entry which is thirty. So total
is seventy dollars for over one hundred days of consecutive
(01:37):
tournament action and over two million dollars in prizes in scholarships.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
So when you're fishing in the golf or in the
ocean or in the bay, I guess that you're a
fishing for a fish that if it's tagged, then that
tag is worth something in some sort of a prize.
Speaker 3 (01:51):
Correct. We do.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
We have our Texas Ford Dealers Red Tag Division. We
release one hundred and twenty six tag redfish up and
down all six hundred miles of Texas Coastline. So the
first five certified anglers who.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Bring in a red tag.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Will enjoy a twenty twenty five Ford F one fifty
supercrew connected to a twenty three foot Hani Amigo with
one hundred and fifty Mercury motor and coastline trailer package.
And there's five of those Andy.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
We have.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Five other additional red tags after that, for a total
of ten, but you'll have to supply your own truck.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
You'll still get.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
The Haniummigo with the one hundred and fifty Mercury motor
and Coastline trailer. We also have a Blue Tag division,
which is the first three blue tags that you have
to and then all these tag redfish divisions. You have
to catch the fish, clip the tag, and release the fish.
You do not release the fish, you're going to be
(02:53):
ineligible to claim your prize.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Right, so you don't have to take it somewhere to
way or do you on some of the other division.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Yeah, So that tag, you have twenty four hours to
bring it into one of our official CCA Texas Starway stations.
There are eighteen of them up and down the coast,
so there's one wherever you're fishing at. So go to
the closest one within twenty four hours of the catch
and then present your tag and they will copy it
to the fishal Way in form and then send it
(03:21):
back to us. And then you need to also give
us a shout too, so we know to be on
the lookout for a tag. But that's just the tag
redfish division. We have an inshore division as well, which
is the largest sheep's head, gaff top black drum.
Speaker 3 (03:35):
That's a big deal.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
We got a lot of people really excited about that one.
You win a nineteen foot shoalwater cat, one hundred and
fifteen mercury motor and the clean trailer package.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
There's three of those. And we have an offshore division too,
all right, tell us about that. Yeah, the hot Power
Offshore division.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
The largest kingfish, dorado ling, and red snapper brought in
within thirty six hours of catch. You can win a
brand new players ranger to fifty five to seven o
EF five with a big text trailer and pursuit camo.
(04:17):
But our most favorite division and one that brings us
the most joy is the scholarship program that we do.
We have a kid's scholarship division and a team scholarship division.
Our kids scholarship division is six through ten or gaf
top and chep's head, and every single kid on the
final leader board will go home with the scholarship ranging
(04:40):
from thirty thousand, twenty fifteen, seventy five hundred and twenty
five hundred dollars and that goes for the ten to
seventeen year olds too. Our teen's division for gas top
and Cheap's head thirty thousand, twenty fifteen, seventy five and
twenty five hundred dollars, and to date Andy CCA Texas
(05:01):
has awarded over eight point four million dollars to Texas
youth Because if we don't get these kids out there
on the water, we're all going to be fishing dead waters.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Here soon, exactly. All right, a couple of things here.
Do you have any favorite places to fish along the coast?
We do.
Speaker 3 (05:19):
We, so that's one of the most common questions. We'll get.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
A's indirect question, I'm assuming, but where do we release
these tag redfish? That's what everyone wants to know. We
do peers, jetties, dykes, Marinas, boat ramps, popular spots in
the bay, reefs, causeways, Andy. There's a redfish tag redfish
approximately one every four point seven miles up and down
(05:49):
the Texas coast. So chances are, wherever you're fishing, you're
right there next to one.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
So how much do these fish travel? Could you release
one in Corpus and catch it in Galveston?
Speaker 2 (06:01):
We have not seen that kind of return yet. We
have on an average fifteen to thirty five percent of
our one hundred and twenty six tagged redfish get caught
within the.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
Tournament dates, so that's pretty good.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
We're like, within the first two weeks, we're expecting at
least a dozen caught. Just because they're caught, though, doesn't
mean they're all going to win yet. Remember you have
to be a CCA member in Texas Star Entry right
in order to be eligible.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
Talk about the CCA Star membership and the entry for him,
that's seventy dollars. That goes a long ways to creating
opportunities to keep the fisheries along the coast in good shape.
And I know you got I'll give back to making
sure that you may you have good conservation.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
So the CCA Texas Star Tournament acts only as a
membership recruitment drive for CCA Texas. We are the membership
arm bringing new members into the organization that we're all
passionate about. That we all love and want to see
conserve the best of the ability.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
So that's what you're supporting.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
You're supporting the future generation and prosperity of our Texas resources.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Anything else we're missing here? What else do the people
out there need?
Speaker 3 (07:18):
To know.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
We have two new special tags this year. Up and
down the coast there will be three eighteen eighty four
lone Star beer tags and for those anglers who touch
those and put the tag, you are winning beer for
a year from lone Star.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
How about that work? That's pretty good? Then? Yes it is.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
And then we have our water Burger eighteen nineteen fifty
tag and those three anglers who touch those will win
Waterburger for a year.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
Awesome.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
All right, Well starts this weekend, it goes through Memorial
for through Labor Day weekend in early late August early September,
and we'll we'll see how all this goes. And hopefully
you have a great season, good weather, no hurricanes for
a while, and uh we can't catch a lot of
fish and give away a lot of.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
Prizes, I hope so too. Andy. You can register at
star Tournament dot org.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
Star Tournament or on me on Yeah, thank you for
doing it. We'll talk to you in the summer and
see how things are going. Star Tournament dot org. Ryan,
thanks so much and best of luck this this season.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
Thank you, Andy, got sweet? All right?
Speaker 1 (08:32):
That's Ryan Towns from CCA Star Fishing. So you get
to catch some fish, and maybe you'll win a prize
and have yourself a boat or a truck or both.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
All of that coming up.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
It's we got basketball to get to. Is they're going
to tip off in New York in about thirty minutes,
and a few other things on the back half hour
of the show on the tickets
