Speaker 1 (00:00):
Okay, can you hear me? Now? I can and I
can hear you.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
We're good.
Speaker 1 (00:04):
Thank you. My friend Christina came and saved me. She
knows more about this story.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Thank you, Christina.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
All Right, it's me Kevin and I have from Mary E.
Smithy Pace High School in Duncanville the legendary Patrese Marshall,
who has been nominated for the iHeartRadio Teacher Award. Hello Patrese, Hello, Hello,
Hello Hello. We're really excited that you have been nominated.
What is what specifically do you teach at Mary E.
(00:32):
Smithy Pace.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Well, I actually teach CCEE Education and Training Early Learning.
So let me just break you down. I prepare students
to become future educators. And to me, I mean, I'm
big on giving back to the community and I try
to pour that into every student that I come in
contact with. I wouldn't be where I'm teaching if it
(00:54):
wasn't for my community.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
So what made you want to be a teacher?
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Of course, my parents are educators. You know, you go
against the grain sometime and be like I don't want
to I don't want to teach, like I want to
do something else. So it was just I guess because
I just have a big heart for helping others like
learn and grow. Like when I was younger in school,
like I loved explaining things to my classmates and just
seeing them like light up. Over time, I just realized
(01:21):
it wasn't just about academics. It was about like building
confidence and other people, like fostering career curiosity, and like
shaping the lives of our young people. They're the next generation.
I think. I'm excited because the school that I actually
work at is an accelerated alternative campus. So our students
(01:42):
here are either falling behind on credits and trying to
catch up. Some of our students have had outside issues,
like family issues, different stuff like that. We've had young
women that has had children or a child and they
had to leave school and they want to come back
and graduate. So we have Our campus is very diverse,
(02:04):
very very diverse. So I'm excited to be at this campus.
I've been actually at this campus for three years because
you know, nowadays in education, it's just like oh, they're teachers,
Oh they're just teachers. We're more than just teachers, We're
more than just educators because in some instance we become counselors,
(02:25):
we become doctors, we become therapists, like we become a
lot of things when it comes to our scholars in
our classroom.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
So no, no doubt.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Yeah, you've got to have a heart for it.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Says a lot about you that you know you have
been nominated for this iHeartRadio Award. Winn remind our listeners
that you can go nominate your favorite teacher now at
iHeartRadio dot com slash teachers. That's iHeartRadio dot com slash

powered by donors Choose. When you were growing up, did
(02:59):
you have thoughts on being something else or did you
always kind of have it in the back of your
mind that you might end up being an educator.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
No, I actually wanted to be a nurse. I went
to school for nursing.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Oh wow, And then.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
I came to the realization. I was like, I don't
know if this is for me. I'd like to show
people different things, and I'm like, I don't know if
nursing gives me that.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
Yeah, with nursing, you have to I think the creativity
goes out, goes out the wall. With nursing, could you
just have to, like you treat your patient and do
your thing. For teaching, you can kind of be creative
and put your own spin on what you're doing right, correct.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
And I'm one of those very extra creative teachers, Like
when it comes to Spirit Week and different stuff like that,
I dress up all right, I dress up, I face paint,
I do all of it. So I'm one of those teachers.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
No, that's good. We need more of that. I wish
we had more of that around the office. Honestly, Is
that school spirit vibes back in the office.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Yes, because my motto is my motto is since I've
been teaching, my motto is to bring the fun back
in education.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
I love that so much.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
You know.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
One of my favorite TV shows is Avid Elementary? Do
you watch that? By chance?
Speaker 2 (04:18):
I do? I love it.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
How accurate is what's going on in Avid Elementary to
the to the real world.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
It's pretty close. It's pretty close. And I always say,
you always have to like education calls you, you don't
call education. So you have to have a heart for teaching.
You have to have a heart for the students that
you're touching, Like that has to be your purpose. That
has to be your why in teaching in education, So what.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
Are your some of your hobbies, some of the things
you have to do in your free time when you're
not you know, doing what you do at school.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
I love spending time with my family. I love fun
dais with my family. I love to read, I love journaling,
and I love doing makeup.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Oh really I do.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
I do. I like to draw too, So I think
that's where my creativity comes when it comes to my
classroom and different stuff like I love thinking outside of
the box. But it keeps the students engaging and it
keeps them learning. So whatever it takes to make sure
that thank you the understanding of the curriculum that I'm teaching,
I'm all for.
