Joel Baldry. Hi, guys, welcome to the Big Man Outdoor Show.
We got Captain Paul Tyre with us, and we got my special guest,
(00:22):
the one and only Tyson Baldry, which is also my youngest son I
got. He is five years old. He just turned five in April.
And uh, we're gonna go oversome weather reports and everything and tide what
it's gonna be doing this weekend, and we'll get to Tyson right there and
ask him a few questions about hisfishing experience right there and what we do
(00:43):
on the golf coach Saturday morning, tide's or low at four four am,
it's gonna be a point nine tenthirty. It's gonna be a high three
point four and at low at fivefourteen it's gonna be a point seven of
the it's gonna be southeast winds elevenmiles an hour five to ten through to
day gust and high tenth is gonnabe eighty six Sunday is looking like at
(01:08):
five o'clock it's gonna be at onepoint two low. It's gonna be high
to eleven twenty one am, thethree point six and low at six nineteen
a zero point two southeast winds ninemiles an hour in a high of eighty
three tenth. It seems like mefor all the afternoon tides is gonna have
more movement to them, you know, in daylight hours anyway to fetch some
(01:30):
fish Yep, it seems like it'sgonna be more of an afternoon day on
Saturday and Sunday. You know,we end the summer months, it's gonna
you know, it's welcome to Florida. When it comes to thunderstorms. They
may not show it rained, butthere's a possibility all the time when it's
hot like it is. Yeah, you only keep an eye on that well,
especially on any water, you knowwhat I mean. Even Lakes Lake
(01:51):
Simonos pretty big and nothing like thebay down there. But boy, you
want to keep an eye on atthat weather, for sure, no doubt.
Tyson, how you doing today, buddy? It's good you having fun
with Daddy here at the radio show. Yeah, it's good. You are
We're gonna tell him a little bitabout you rather. How long have you
been fishing with daddy? Since shewas old? About three to two?
(02:16):
Yeah, that's what I thought ofjust about too when you started fishing with
me? How many? How manybig red fish you caught? You caught
a bunch of red fish? Youcaught a look, you caught a bunch
of red fish? You have? How many trout? You call? You
caught a pile of trout? Yeah, on your own, didn't you?
(02:37):
Yeah? What kind of you did? You did catch a big red fish,
that's right, all by yourself, daddy and editing. So what else
you like liket to do in outdoors? I just lighting a fish and you
lot the fish and hunt. Youlike chasing them deer around? Yeah?
Huh? What about them hogs?Yeah? You like them hogs too?
(03:00):
And uh, you know, misterTanner is probably gonna take you turkey hunting
this year. Yeah? You readyfor turkey hunting? Oh? Yeah?
So yes, sir. H MisterPaul's gonna ask you a question. You
gonna answer mister Paul when he talksto you. I have a question for
you. Do you and your daddyever catch any catfish? Oh? No,
(03:22):
who catches all the catfish? Whocatches all the catfishes? Tanner catch
all the catfish? Yeah, yeah, Tanner and Captain Kenny Mullins. So,
Tysan, what what's your favorite thingto do with daddy? Oh?
I guess I just want to go. Uh I'll go boat wood and so
(03:51):
egg go catch him talking to themike someone where everybody can hear you and
uh oh catching all the big fish. Yeah. And I like to go
gear to the hog tuck hunting.Oh yeah, yeah, you like to
ride in that air boat. Yeah. So Tyson, this year, how
(04:20):
many how many fish you really thinkyou caught on the salt water m some
too fish to fish? Yeah? What about in the tournament? Have you
won a tournament in the youth division? Yeah? I catched woa. I
catched the biggest red fish. Yeah, the biggest red fish in Jo.
(04:46):
He was he was twenty two incheswhen he wanted you fly, but he
caught him on his own on artifish. That's awesome. That's awesome. And
I tried to net the fish forhim, and he told me to help
Jerry out that he's got his ownfish. And by the time I got
overyone to net with his because Jerryhad a big red fish on tysing down,
picked him up and about break thepoland half flopping him in the boat.
But uh, he wound up winningin a tackle box some little trophy.
(05:09):
I think, didn't you. Yougot to talk. We're likecky to
hear you. Yeah, I justgotta. But that's that's what it's uh
man, that's what it's all about. You know. I brought him in
here today. He's been killing meabout getting on this radio show and seeing
what it's all about. But uh, he's telling the truth about everything.
(05:30):
Well, we do catch some catfish, dude, And I didn't tell him
to say we didn't. He setthat before we even started to show that
we didn't catch none that Tanner did. But you got to keep the youth
involved. Like I said, he'sfive years old, guys, and uh,
anything I'm doing in the outdoors,he's wanting to be right up my
butt doing it, and uh heenjoys it. And that's what that's what
(05:53):
you got to do with the kidsthese days in time. To keep them
out of trouble is keep them inthe outdoors, keep them entertained the fish
and hunting, whether it's you know, turkey hunting, deer hunting, hog
hunting, anything anything to do withoutdoors. Is you got to keep your
kids involved and that way it don'tdisappear, because if we don't, it's
gonna be a dye and breathe. That truly is Trent Paul. What you
(06:15):
got going on, man? Andwhat's the weather looking like in your area?
Man? I tell you it lookslike we're gonna be a little warmer
than than the coast down there thisweekend. But man, our Lake Seminole
is finally starting to clear up alittle bit. It's been all that rain
we mean getting is finally getting startingto clear up. Some still a little
dirty, and I know down onLake Tac when it's it's it's it didn't
get as quite as muddy as LaSeminole. But it's been high and it's
(06:39):
it's got some color to it too. But the water temperature right now is
I was out there this morning. It was eighty four degrees in this morning,
so it's been it's warming up abouteighty seven eighty eight. What's the
you said the water is still cloudythough, yeah's still a little dirty,
but like I said, it's startingto clo thinking if we don't get a
lot more rain and the next youknow, over the next week, it's
(06:59):
really start clearing up. Yeah, that's what about Talcon Talquin. The talk
has been pretty good down there,I tell you what. The croppie been
been biting. Still pretty good ontalk when they're out in about twelve to
fifteen foot of water in the mouthsof the creek, Still on on mentas
and jigs. You know, thatlife scope kind of really helps you pinpoint
them and get them caught up.But and been hearing about some bass schooling
(07:20):
out there too, you know thosethose school on the surface after shad and
and man a trap and a anda top water bay works go. When
you see them, you can castto them when they're busting. Are they
any tournaments coming up this weekend outthere? There is that. We've got
a not this weekend, but thenext weekend there's a big h State of
Florida UH Bass Federation Nation Youth. There'll probably be two hundred boats in it.
(07:44):
Man, it's a big, bigtournament. They got a lot of
money involved in that. Yeah, they get a lot of a lot of
scholarship money, you know, alot you know, nowadays, these kids
can can get into middle school andhigh school fish and end up getting a
full scholarship in the college for forpast fishing made me want to go back
to school a couple of years ago. I know, man, it seems
like they would do a salt waterdivision too. Yeah, you know that.
(08:07):
I'm starting to see red fish tournamentsthat I know. Bast promotes a
red fish trail. But you know, I haven't seen that in the high
school and in the college yet onthat, but I bet it's coming.
It's got to be. I meanthere's a lot of you know, kids
around the coach that would that up. You ain't kidding. That's something you
know, really to think about. You know, you can get a lot
(08:28):
of middle school and like, youknow, you start him out at two
years old. I mean, thinkhow good he's going to be when he's
your age. You probably fishing likehim when he was young to THEO,
wouldn't you? I didn't any see, And that was another thing, like
I said, you know before andshows my daddy worked so much. I
had to pretty much teach myself.Yeah, the same way thirteen years old,
pulling the boat down there and worriedabout getting caught. Yeah, and
(08:50):
you know he didn't. He didn'tdo much saltwater fishing. Now, we
did a lot of brim fishing andstuff like that, and a lot of
deer hunting. So that was,you know, what we had time to
do together. Otherwise, when wemoved to Perry, we didn't have much
time to do any saltwater fishing. And when we did it was going out
are messing around, but mostly scolloping. Yeah. So yeah, it's one
(09:13):
thing. You know, with me. When I got introduced fish when I
was about ten, bass fishing andmy dad took me one time for about
thirty minutes, I caught three giantbash and it hooked me. I fished
every day I was twenty six yearsold. Never went with me again,
not one time, just introduced meto it. And I'm not I ain't
complainable. Look to me, Daddyand everyone know he worked. He gave
me the ability to go fish.I ain't complaining. But man, I
tell you what, it's once thatthat fishing gets you. For me,
(09:35):
it didn't let go. It's hooked. And like I said, I'm doing
charters and stuff. If he's thereat the store, I got to slip
away. If not h going tobe on the boat. Wait, he's
wanting to go and help, andhe does. He does do a lot
of help. Like I've took himon some of the charters before when people
you know, said, oh no, bring him on, and he would
(09:56):
run the net the whole time.Yeah, and that's what leaf you know
with Viking Coach. He takes hislittle boy with him and that's what he
does. He made some work rightthere. Yeah, I try. He's
teaching them, teaching, teaching themthe process of it. Yeah. I
think it's awesome. I think hislittle boy six six or seven. And
like I said, he's been messingwith him for a while now too.
And that's that's what I'm getting Tysoninto. And one day Tyson's gonna be
(10:16):
running that store there and uh,taking over everything, and maybe he'll have
his own little charter business and stuff. From my other two. They want
to disappear from down there. Theywant to go to the city and everything.
Tyson's wanted. Whatever daddy's doing,he's one hundred percent right behind me,
that's right. So anyways, thefishing man, it's that the water
(10:37):
is still dark. You know,I've been hearing it's darker, you know,
towards Saint Mart's like it ain't beingbeing dark, but it's it's staying
darker around. And that's all thatwater coming out of out of the back
still streams and coming out our riveris high. We do not need no
rain for about a month. Alittle sprinkle here and there ain't gonna hurt.
But it's it's getting bad. Imean we usually this time of the
(10:58):
year. You know, if itain't rained by now, it's you know,
the river pretty much it cruis upa little bit. It don't get
as clear as the Saint marks oranything like that, but uh, it
gets pretty it gets pretty clear aroundthe head of it and everything. And
you know you ain't got all thatthat that water rushing out let's. I
mean, it's been high now forat least four a week. Yeah,
you know, it seems like it'sbeen off spring out up in the bottom
(11:22):
of them houses and stuff. Andand just when it starts to go down,
we'll get a pile of rain upthere in Georgia out and a pile
of range every That's what we've beenexperiencing up there on Seminole, just rain
after rain, maybe maybe one daywe'll catch a break and we don't get
none of them, you know themletters that start with H. Yeah,
we don't need none of them thisyear. We need to we need to
(11:43):
bypass on on the hurricanes. That'sright, tell you that's right. Uh,
they need to go down there toCuba or something somewhere and leave leave
Florida alone for a little while. But yeah, man, I'm hoping the
weather turns out better. It's itseems to be getting hot, you know,
and the water temperature steadily climbing, and uh, hopefully that you know,
this summer's gonna turn it around alittle bit, and you know fishing
is gonna get better. Yeah,we got to go to a quick commercial,
(12:07):
real quick, guys, and we'llbe right back with y'all. Thank
y'all. All right, guys, welcome back to the show. We got
Captain Kenny Mullins on the line.He is in Pennsylvania right now. He
says he's in some woods, butI think he might be behind the dumps
(12:28):
for somewhere, cause I don't knowthere's any woods in Pennsylvania, are they,
Kenny? Oh yeah, we're uphere in the mountains in Clearfield County,
Atlanta, Pennsylvania. Oh yeah, how's it going up there? Man?
What y'all got going on? We'reup here testing some tracking dogs,
some wounded game recovery dogs and hostinga seminar. You got a little john,
(12:48):
would you? No? No,they stayed back home. They stay
back home. They had h youout of house and home before you got
there. You ain't kidding? What? So how many people all got entered
it? Twenty? Right now? They'll be twenty tests that we got to
do and then there'll be about thirtyfive thirty five to forty for the seminara
(13:13):
gun And that's crazy all the wayin Pennsylvania. You got people wanting to
work their dogs up there. Ohyeah, this is the so it's been
Tracking has been legal now in Pennsylvania. I believe it's been eight years.
And this is the first formal kindof training or seminar and testing event they've
ever had. Dang, that's that'scrazy. What did they what do they
(13:35):
usually? They hunting white tails andbear and stuff up there? What?
Yeah, most mostly whitetail and bear. They do have a small elk population
that is growing, but they're nothunting them yet. Yeah. They what
I just got do they got alottery on it or they just don't hunt
them period. I'm not sure.I'd have to find out on that one,
but we we haven't seen some. There's a lot of white tail though,
(14:00):
any big, any big ones, well you know they're they're still growing
or they're just starting to grow rightnow. But we saw one yesterday that
was had quite a bit of massand was already outside the years with about
what three more months to grow?Right? What's their food source like out
there? What they got to eat? Everything? I mean, there's it's
(14:22):
but right here where we're at isnot a big agricultural area because the mountains,
but there's there's a ton of brows, and the property we're on has
a lot of food plots and stuff. But where we were at earlier in
the week in eastern Pennsylvania, there'sa lot of a lot of crops.
What they I mean, what arethey growing? Beans? What corn or
(14:43):
what? Well, we were inLancaster County and they it was mostly corn,
corn, beans, tobacco, butuh soy beans, asparagus, strawberries,
all kinds of blueberries, grapes.I bet a lot of agriculture.
I bet them deer tastes good aroundthat are eating the blueberries and stuff.
(15:05):
Oh yeah, I'm sure. Sowhat what's on the seminar right here?
Y'all pretty much doing the same thing, seeing how far the dog tracks and
everything. Yeah yeah, and thenjust teaching people about, you know,
how to train their dogs and givingadvice on like we'll evaluate dogs and see
what they need to work on andhelp them out. And this event we
(15:26):
have people coming from Ohio, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, West
Virginia, Virginia, and of coursePennsylvania. Oh that's cool, man,
and y'all y'all talking about you know, how long to wait to track them
and everything that way they don't pushthe deer. Yeah. So we actually
simulate. We we simulate some shotsites and wound beds, and we'll put
(15:50):
like pieces of bone and we'll we'llmake up some some fake gut matter and
and you know, showed them howto inspect it and and see and I
guess estimate where it was shot atwith the and give a proper weight time.
That's cool. Have you have youslowed down and did any fishing,
you know, since you've been Ohyeah, yeah. Paul was asking what's
(16:15):
going on with the fishing instead. You know, all the dogs, he
said, you and all kinds ofstuff. He don't know what you in
fishing up there in Pennsylvania. Iknow I haven't. We did stop by
one lake and we saw some guy. It was it was a stocked,
stocked lake for me is a bigpond, but I have they They were
(16:36):
catching walleye and a large mouth. That's what we saw. Man, walleye.
That's some of the best eating freshwaterfisher is. Yeah, sure is.
I bet he could find a catfishup there. I wonder if any
flatheads up there that I don't know. I don't know, but you know,
(16:56):
Tanner sent me a video of Joelspeak and catfish did he Well,
yeah, the catfish were talking toJoel and he was talking back to him.
Well, we we have Tyson herewith us today, and he doesn't
told me that his daddy they don'tcatch when they go, they don't catch
catfish. He doesn't told me that, he said, Tanner does, but
him and his daddy don't catch bigHow much should Joel pay him to say
(17:21):
that? He? I don't thinkhe did. I just asked him round
the blue He said, no,we don't catch catfish. That's tannerining him.
Tell him toys and tell him whocatches all the catfish? Yeah,
And I was expecting to say wedo catch catfish, but he come out
(17:42):
and said, we don't catch catfish. Man, my daddy don't. And
I ain't told him nothing about thecatfish. He knows that I don't like
him on the boat neither. Well, I tell you, it is getting
that time of year. They're they'regoing to be eating everything that you throw
out there. What have you beenfishing with? So my last trip,
(18:02):
right before we left come up here, I started out with live tinfish and
they were dying on the hook beforewe got a bite. So I started
cutting them up to use cut baitand really wasn't very successful with that,
and switched to some paddle tails, digging them, keeping them on the bottom,
(18:25):
and we caught the majority of thefish like that. And then the
trip before that we did we diddo pretty good on live tinfish, But
it's we're into that summertime by itit's getting tough and it's tough for everyone.
How was your battle Memorial Day weekend? On Saturday, I got out
(18:45):
of that trip, so I fishedFriday, and I said, I can't
deal with it anymore. I don'tblame you. It was packed down.
I didn't hear nobody getting too crazyto do and hurting nobody, but it
you know, Friday was crazy anduh, like I said, we the
fishing was. It was tough forus and it was tough for everyone else.
(19:08):
You know that we we had abox of fish, but it was
a struggle. You know, I'mnot gonna I'm not gonna sugarcoat it.
Yeah, that's what I've been here. And now you know, it's crazy
how like backdoors Rock Island and stuffthey have and you know, some trouble
area they're catching a few fish, but they having to work for them.
But still over around coyb Rock, they're killing them in about six seven foot
(19:30):
of water. They're catching good trap, big trap. And I talked some
guys that caught at Cape Samblife calledthe heck out of them. I don't
know what it is. And youknow they even took a water tap over
that way. Eighty two I think, is what a guy told me the
other day that that that's where it'sat. See we're we're at eighty six
eight. But you know the water, even the water is dark over there.
They it's usually clear around cob rockand stuff, and it's dark over
(19:55):
there now where it was clear overthere and dark it you know, Osila,
But it's staying. It's staying alittle tea colored over there. Yeah.
And I will say I started outa keaton and uh, for one,
there was a ton of boats andI ran ran all the way towards
Rock Island and we caught a fewfish there and started working our way back
and caught some on our way back. Because by the time we can't we
(20:18):
were working our way back, peoplewere leaving fishing, going hitting the sand
bars, and we're going back in. And uh, when you get those
crowds of boats, those fishes shutdown on you. Mm. Yeah.
They don't know where to go whenthey hear the murders zooming by every different
way. Hey, hey, Kenny, do you would you rather take folks
during the week than versus the weekend? Absolutely? Yeah, me too.
(20:38):
Yeah. And that's like we're gettinginto the season where I'll do some tripletail
fishing. And I tell everyone,if you want to catch tripletail, you
come on a Tuesday or Wednesday. For one the fish have been hammered all
weekend. It gives them time tosettle and then there's less boats out on
the water. Yeah. Well youcan imagine this weekend at Keaton and Schi
(20:59):
and even sat Mark. It's gonnabe crazy because snapper season it's coming in.
Oh yeah, so it's gonna bewild, but it's I heard,
it's gonna be pretty rough off shore. It's gonna be three to four's.
It's what they call him for.But it's loud to be rougher than that,
you know, when they call himthat usually a little bit rougher.
Yeah, then what they're saying andit guys, you're saying the watercolor but
typically in June is really good troutfishing, isn't it. I mean,
(21:22):
honestly, it starts blacking off asyou get as it water warms up.
Yes, I would rather trout fishabout mid October to mid mid April.
It's kind of peak in my opinion. Yeah, I like going about to
the end. That's interesting how theguys over towards Cape sam Blast Saint George
(21:45):
Island, we're catching the heck outof them. That water is probably a
lot cooler over there too, becauseit's deeper, closer end. Yep,
that's you know, it's just ours. It's like a what it's about.
You gotta go at least what eightor nine miles out to start getting about
twenty foot of water. Oh yeah'sand see ours. You know, even
(22:06):
three miles out you ain't in youknow, six foot of water, you
know. So it's it just heatsup quick, you know, the horder
it gets to worse. It getsnow over there they got a lot deeper.
I'm sure it ain't half a milein here, and probably of water.
Yep, it's a difference. Itgets real, you know, real
deep over there. That's and that'slike going down towards UH, you know,
(22:27):
more of the big bend. Goingdown towards UH, Swany and cedar
Key, you know they have morepasses and stuff, and of course the
Swanee River dumping all that fresh waterkeeps it cooler. But those deeper passes
around there, and you know, you go over towards UH, I guess
you'd say Caramell all that area, you have those passes and that helps a
(22:48):
lot. Yeah, And just likeyou know cedar Key are they got some
deep spots you know right off itand yeah, you know that. What
about the kobe you'all having a lotof kobe to show up down there?
Not not as good as it waslast year. You know, last year
I had a really good season. This year, I'm not seeing the numbers.
I see they starting to catch alot of them, you know,
(23:11):
in our area right now, they'restarting to pop up some big koba.
Yeah, which is a little latefrom typical, you know, I know,
I mean I go over go overyour way Kobe fishing most of the
time, and typically that's around thefirst of May, last week April into
the into mid May. Dnfo Well, Kenny, it was good talking to
(23:34):
you, brother. Get your backto Florida. We're you're in the safe
zone. Get away from Pennsylvania.Oh yeah, and we're running out of
time and we've been had to goto a quick commercial break and like I
said, can he be safe onthe way home? Brother? Alright,
thank you, Hi guys, welcomeback to the Big Ben Outdoor Show.
(24:00):
We got Captain Paul Tire. Hejust went on a fishing trip with Dale
Fly Fishing for the first time.Yes, and what's that on top of
your head? Man, I'll tellyou what that's my first fish I caught
with a fly on a fly.Rod Dale actually made it. And that
thing called a fish, No,nice big old brim. It looks like
a cork out of a wine bottle. That's exactly what he said it was.
(24:22):
And cut it down. Word man, that thing floats up there and
you just give a little jerk withoutlittle pomp man. That thing caught some
fish right there. So that wasfun. I've never fly fish before.
And Dal made, yeah, madethat just a hook when he started,
how's the old But see that withhis glasses. I think he mused to
put on a magnifying glass and hehad to have something saying that small clock.
(24:45):
But it caught a fish though, that's for sure. How many fish
do you ill wind up? Wecaught several? It was fun, you
know, I've never done that. You ever fly fish before a few times
when my granny, we used themwheelow flies that we'd always get certain times
a year. They'd get on themlight poles at night and them not li
yeah, and we got round themup, put them in a cricket basket.
We go up in Smith Lake offthe Scamby River. I won't never
forget as long as I was living. My granddaddy loved that's all he used.
(25:08):
Brim fishing was like may flies.Yeah, it's kind of like that's
what's called a willow fly though, right right, and uh we'd hooked them
on a brim hook, roll themup in there and granted a lot of
time used old brim buster eight footerand you can't find eight footers no more.
I got one of her last onesthat she had as eight foot but
now that all they got, soI think nine and ten's and and stuff
(25:30):
like that, but she would usethat. Granddadd had always used the fly
rod, and that's where I learneda little bit playing with it. I'd
have everything tangled up in the boat, of course, but it was fun
when you did catch a red bellyor something on it. Yeah, it
was. It was real fat.It was that, you know. I
was watching some videos. It's peopletarping fish for with fly rods. Man,
that's that's crazy on small test.I mean, that's crazy hate.
(25:55):
But that was fun. The firstmever did, I did get tangled up
a little bit, but once shegave me a little instruction on how to
do it. I mean I wasgetting to where I could put it,
put it there out. It wasfun. And right now upon Lake Seminole
there's the mayflies have been hatching, and they'll they'll hatch all the way into
August, it seems like, butor September. But man, I tell
you what. I had a customerother day. We were we were catching
(26:15):
some shell cracker and uh, therewere some mayflies around. He got something.
We was running out of worms, and we put some mayflies on the
hook and caught caught some shell crackeroff the bed with a may fly.
I bet that was fun. Itwas We had a blast. What where
was y'all at again? Was y'allon talking? So? Yeah, and
Dell went to Lake Talquin and thenwe're all talking about where those may flies
(26:36):
up on Lake Seminole. Okay, yeah, I don't think the may flies
has started on talq when yet.Me and Dell didn't see any that day.
We didn't see any mayflies going on, but there was definitely a few
fish shallow and see I like, you know, messing with them brim and
and you know, go and catchsome trout in the mountains and stuff with
the fly run. That's what Dellis talking about. He said, Man,
(26:57):
you you do that right there, that's a only different experience. There's
a lot of people that you know, fish, red fish and trout,
Yeah, mainly red fish. ButI ain't got the patience man, when
I when I catch that joker andI hooking, you wanted to beat?
I want him on top of theorders, skipping to the yeah one on
the frog. You want to gethim coming and slim in the boat.
(27:18):
Yeah, I mean, And don'tget me wrong, I don't like fighting
them a little bit. I likehearing that drag scene. That's right,
that's right, that fly rod.And if you catch you know, fifty
or sixty red fish, you're gonnabe warm out that day, you know.
And I got a question for you, you know right now with that
with that water being dingy, agold spoon will work good for sketching some
of them, absolutely red fish. There's a lot of people, especially this
time of the year, from Marchon, a gold spoon comes in effect.
(27:41):
You'll get them big schools of bullscoming in and uh one after that,
are they coming in to spawn? Is that what they're doing with frayers
to spawn? Yeah, that's whatexactly what they're doing. And you know,
they're moving up down the coast. It's late a little bit. Usually
it's in the middle of March, you know, April's when it starts happening,
when the big schools come in andthem right, you'll catch them,
you know, them thirty plus inchersup in shallow water. And that's amazing.
(28:06):
It's crazy how it works. Butyou get up there in the middle
of them with a gold spoon andeverybody on the boat will be hooked up.
They'll have a field day. Yeah, and uh, you know,
they got different kinds of spoons.A lot of people like using the aquas
and you know, and you gotthe gator the gator tails. I've been
hearing a lot more, you know, better reports out of the aquas is
throwing off. It's kind of likea gold plated right, and it throws
(28:29):
a better reflection off, you know. It's it's coming through the water right
in there, steadily rotating us.It's shooting out like a mullet flash.
Right, it's more the flash inthe water. That's what them Bastrish we
always use that grew up even hisage, using them Johnson spoons. You
know, there's Johnson and they justkind of turn like that. You know,
I could see that. I cansee how imitating a shadow, that's
right. Taking the shadow or shinerywe call them on gold ones. They
(28:52):
think shiner, you know, orbring whatever it might be. So y'all
actually use gold spoons fish. Ohyeah, yeah, I grew up doing
that and say that's crazy. Howyou can buy versa you know, freshwater
to saltwater. Yeah, you know, Kenny was saying that day. Man,
there's a lot of things y'all doyou fish with and for red fish
that you you can use for forfor bass too, And I know you
(29:15):
gotta have the right situation. Buthe ever tried crank baits on red fish.
I mean, I know, youget a red fish and he got
trouble hooks. That might be achallenge, you know what I mean.
But I've heard that they make astrike King, makes a hybrid hunter and
it runs a real shallow I'm justone. I bet they. I bet
them red fish will tear that thingup. Yeah they uh Tyson beating on
(29:37):
the door. He's got to goto the restaurant. But yeah, man,
the strike Kings got that and it'skind of set up like a spinner
bake, you know, it's gotthe gold spoon on it, you know
for the reflection. And I hearda lot of people, you know,
have good luck with them. Idon't fish with them because there's too much
floating grass. It gets aggravate inthe myri you to fish with them.
Yeah, and you know top water, top water's booming right now, but
(30:00):
you got to have you got tofind those places where there's not as much
floating grass. And it's just nowwhat calls all that floating grass? Is
that? And just is it justnew stuff coming up and pushing it.
It's a lot to do with tides. Boats. You know, the shrimp
boats is out there in our areaa lot, and that's why they can't
come so far in because they're messingup the you know, the grass the
(30:21):
bottom. That's why they don't.Let I think it's what four miles an
out or something like that. Theygot a boundary. They can't come in
too far and then they can't goout far enough because it gets too deep
on them. Got you. Butthat's that's a lot to do with it,
I believe. But you know, just the the weather, the tide
and everything, and you know, the high waters and stuff like that's got
a lot to do with the grassmessing up to and it's fresh water.
(30:45):
It's fresh water killer grass. Youknow, you get too much fresh waters,
just like on our oysters. Youknow, you can't eat oysters right
there when you get too much freshwater around them, right, And that's
why it's just it's been a realcraddy year when it comes to fishing in
our area because usually it's booming, right, and the Dagon fresh water has
just ruined it, and it's puteverything behind, you know, almost a
(31:07):
month behind, right, And whenit does finally come in, it's like
it's kind of like that tide whereyou've been waiting on the tide all day,
it's supposed to already be in,and all of a sudden, the
wind shifts from you know, fromthe north to the south, and forty
five minutes it's overwhere. That's kindthat's kind of how everything else has been
happening this year. When it's supposedto be happening, it ain't happening,
and then all of a sudden ithappens right there. In a week's time,
(31:29):
it's overwhere. Yeah, And that'swhat Kenny was talking about earlier,
that it's getting up that point oftime, the fish is scattered, it's
hot, it's miserable out there.Definitely want to be going in the morning
and evenings, yeah, no doubt. And like I said, this weekend,
it's looking like the tides are goingto be better, you know,
movement in the afternoons, mid afternoons. Yeah, so I wouldn't waste my
time, you know. And alot of people, the older people has
(31:52):
got to go in the morning timeswhen it's a lot cooler. Even in
that afternoon, it's still going tobe you know, right right that sun
goes that's right, that's right. It was this morning out there on link
someone old man. It was nice. I could have I could actually had
a little little sweatshirt on it.It was nice. It was very comfortable
there this morning. As the bathbite picked up in you'd starting to I
(32:13):
talked to a fellow today. Iwas I was going out and looking at
some other places. I got atrip coming in this week with some folks
coming in and stay with me forthree or four days, and and just
checking out some new areas. AndI talked to a guy at the ramp.
He said, he said, man, I tore them up to day
I said, what did you catchthem on? He said, I call
on a buzz bait. They weretearing up buzz bait up this morning.
He said, that's fun. Youget a top water bike. I'm sure
(32:34):
it's like a red fish. Youget a hit a top water bait.
Man that that's that's that's that's funthere when that happens. And I think
that's gonna get better and better thatthe top water fishing up there. The
lake's been so dirty, I thinkit's gonna get pushed out a little bit.
But it's starting. It's just nowstarting to pick up. And then
you'll have those walking baits like ahead and zerospook. Those are those started
(32:57):
getting good. Prop baits that getgood. Bangaloures start getting good. Just
need that water clip some more thatthe you know, the difference on that
top water. You know that bassand traut and red fish even it seems
like that trout and red fish ismore aggressive to it. Yeah, cause
that's why I got mad when Itried to bass fish, because I reckon
the bass is biting down on it. But you kind of got a pause
(33:19):
a little bit of getting that extrathat's right, that's right. I didn't
have that pause. I was justsnatching and I snatched it slam out of
their mouth. I'd be so mad. I couldn't. Red fish ain't like
that. When that red fish hits, he got it, got it.
And most of the time he'll haveit halfway down the throat. You know.
That's the most bad thing about themis they just so aggressive when they
when they're getting it and you knowyou got it down there and you're trying
(33:40):
to get it out and you knowto save them, especially if they're too
small or whatever. Right, Butand that's that's another crazy thing. It
seems like the smaller red fish ismore aggressive than the big one. Yeah,
I mean they just like, Yeah, I've noticed that too. You
get them three four pound bath man, they'll they'll hit that thing. I've
had them jump completely out of thewater and like they pause up in there
(34:01):
and come back down and laying righton top of it. Then you have
a big you know, I've caughtsome had the fortunate to catch some fish
over ten pounds on the top waterbait and they just come up and just
just suck it. They don't wet, no energy, just suck it right
in. Yeah, it's like whateveryou know, their mouth is probably big
as the worm. Till you geta bite, you're like, is that
a fish? It it feels solight. You set the uk and it's
(34:22):
a giant, you know. Andthat's how you know. The redfish did
the same thing on the bottom whenthey was when it was when it got
real cold, when it first gotlike the thirty degrees you know out there.
They would they wouldn't bite hard likethey've been slamming it, you know,
hitting it real hard. They wouldjust it feel like he was hung
on the rock. And then youpick up a little bit to go to
(34:44):
move it, you know, jiggybait, and all of a sudden the
pole pull back and then set thehook out. Uh. It was weird
how they was doing when it justlike that too, that sprang out.
I had customers that they're they're workingtheir bait a little too fast. I
said, you need to keep slowingit down, and and they slowed it
down and you just feel like, man, I feel like it's on some
(35:04):
grass. All sudden it just easedown. Thing. How was the lakes
this weekend or on the more ofa weekend, they were they were some
They was pretty busy. You knowit was pretty hot too this weekend.
But man, I tell you what, Lake Simonell had quite a few people,
and I know Lake Talp was busy. I talked to a buddy down
there, and but uh, man, I didn't hear of any kind of
accidents anywhere. That's a good thing, and that was that's a blessing.
(35:24):
That's what I was worried about.Everybody, you know, standing under control
and not getting too carried away onthe water. And you know, drinking
and driving and stuff like. That'sright, because you know you got drinking
and driving in a car. Yougot to drink and driving a boat too.
Just you know, a boat don'tstop like a car. You know,
there's no room for air, andthat's right. You got to be
very careful and all. You know, this time of year, people more
(35:45):
people going out on the on theon the flats and on the in the
ocean and on the lakes. Youreally want to make sure your boat's got
your life jackets, everything is inorder, right because our emergency comes,
you're gonna need it, that's right. But we've got to go to a
quick commercial, guys, and we'llbe coming back with our final segment y'all
stay tuned. Hey guys, welcomeback to the b be An Outdoor Show.
(36:14):
I know he was talking to meand Paul a little bit about you
know me more a weekend earlier. We got Dale joined us on the last
segment. Uh he uh, youknow mentioned that I didn't think there was
no avenue forts. But we hadwe had a you know, a boat
incident over yeah, a Lotney Bay. We had, Uh we had a
young man lose his life. Uhlate late Monday, I think it was.
(36:38):
And you know, no one's perfect. You get on a boat and
you're having fun and and everything, but it only takes a second for something
to happen. And whether it's arogue wave or whatever. His their boat
capsized and it threw all of themin the water, and unfortunately he didn't
come home. My thing is,when you're out there on the water,
(37:00):
have fun, enjoy yourself, goout there, but always remember that boat.
It doesn't have brakes. That's andI always remember this when there's a
when this wavy and choppy and everything, I mean, anything can happen,
So you know, throwing a lifeest, it's not going to hurt you
to wear a lifeest. While you'reriding and when the boat comes to a
(37:20):
stop and you're fishing, whatever, take it off, enjoy yourself. But
I'm a firm believer. When I'munderway driving my boat, I got my
cord attached and everything, because I'vejust seen way too many videos of people's
boats. They fall out the boatand you know, people are like,
oh, look, you fell allthe boat. Well, if he had
his cord on that boat, wouldn'tbe ready to get ready to run them
(37:43):
over? Number one, And thenyou're risking other people's lives to save your
life because first responders are out thereand trying to stop the boat or looking
unfortunately looking for you because you didn'tput on life fest Uh. You know.
It's it's prayers and condolences to hisfamily. It's sad, it's heartbreaking,
(38:07):
and we hope and pray that itdoesn't happen to any of your family,
the people that are listening to usand everything. So when you go,
make sure you got a vest onand you know, just don't scram
it away back. Hey I'm guiltyof it. I did it. You
know, you put it in thebox and it's like, okay, I
got one. If I get pulledover. I got I got four of
(38:28):
them. I'm good. No,take them out, put them on and
be safe and come home safe.I mean the whole. My best friend
Bill has always told me. Hesay, hey, man, greatest trip
in the world is when you leaveand you come home safe. Yeah,
I mean truthfully, boating is isis fun. But these boats nowadays,
(38:50):
man, I'm telling you what, they got some power, and I mean
you're talking about V eight motors onthe back of a fiberglass sleigh that can
do seventy five and eighty miles anhour across the water and no brakes.
But there, yes, so itcan be dangerous. There's been bass boat
(39:13):
incidents. There's been incident you know, out in the bay and everything else.
You never know what's going to happen. You might have a steering mechanism
go on here or whatever. Butin the big picture of it all,
we want you to go out, catch a lot of fish, have fun,
enjoy yourself, take your family out, but we want you to come
home safe. Yeah. Make sureyour safety equipment's all up to date too,
(39:35):
and talking them about life jackets. So a lot of people's got life
jackets. Crammed away and they didn'thave stuff through on them and stuff man,
check them, check them, youknow. Ever, you know a
couple of weeks or something if you'regoing out a lot, because them things
get a tear and them they're gonnabecome water logged, water logg The throw
cushions are terrible about that. Yes, those throw cushions you get your local
retailer. I won't mention names, but I can tell you right now it
(40:00):
don't take a lot to get themwet. And I picked up mine and
I was like, this thing's waterlogged and there's no water in the boat,
but this humidity in years and theydo have expiration dates on them.
Those throw cushions, they do expire, and your your flares they expire.
And there's so doing a safety checkonce a quarter on your boat is advisable.
(40:25):
And make sure in your safety equipment, especially if you're fishing out on
that golf. Anything could happen. You know, you could have wind coming
out in the north, storm comingoff the hill ye and push you offshore.
So you really need the same thingsthey got offshore. EPERV is my
number one thing if you're going tofish in that golf. I really think
you should have an EPERV on yourboat. It's not that much once you
(40:46):
buy it one time. I thinkit's one hundred dollars a year. But
they got that thing design. Ifit gets wet, you know, the
coastguard is going to be to youin a matter of minutes. Yeah,
if you hit a button on it'sthe same way if you're getting to buy
you got a boat fire or whatever, putting and a board the boat,
and they're gonna come to you.Well, okay, And here's a prime
example. I always use myself andI don't know what a you pervis?
(41:12):
You know it's and see that's it'sa it's a life saving mechanism. Yeah,
so where do you get it?What does it do? I mean
attracts you? Is it runs offover one hundred satellites while there you can
buy them at you know, bastPros got them. Any boat, I
go buy one. They're they're worthevery penny of I think they're around four
hundred dollars. But yeah, what'syour life worth? You know, what's
(41:36):
everybody else's life worth? On yourboat? It's invaluable is to get everybody
home safe and sound. Uh youknow, let the stories ring out about
who caught the most and who didn'tand everything else, and laugh and have
a good time, but make surethat everybody gets home safe that so you
can laugh and have a good time. It just broke my heart to hear
this story about this guy because itwas at the very I mean, as
(41:57):
far as my understanding, I'm I'mnot news reporter. I don't have the
exact story, but what I heard, it happened at the very end of
the holiday weekend, so he spentall that time with his family. No
one expected that to happen. Yeah, and it's this heartbreaking. They don't
never do. But that's why youcan't never prepare enough when it comes to
the equipment. Have a you know, have a mirror. I used to
(42:20):
wouldn't carry a mirr or anything, but you think about it. You out
there floating in water. It's hardto see from that plane above. But
if you got that mirror reflecting thatsunlight, they gonna see that reflection,
Oh yeah, that night. Havea little flashlight, that's what I keep
them all my gear and in mywaterproof gear. I've got a flashlight,
I've got flares in it. I'vegot a mirror and I've got also a
(42:42):
float raft. You know that youcan pull a pin right there and it
blows out anything that helps. Youknow, we got in a predicament.
It's been only four or five yearsago. Been a buddy of mine.
The float switch quit working on thebelch pump. Well he doesne got seasick
out there because he usually takes hismedicine where he leaves. Well, I'm
out there fishing and I said, hey man, the water's coming in the
(43:06):
you know, above the cabinets,a little bit in the back. We
had them wash out holes. Buthe had added another motor to his boat,
so everything was heavier. H andwe got I kept moving. I
said, turn that beach pump on. He turned the beach pump on.
It's something there pumping and on fishingand it really ain't nothing changing. And
I said, what the world's goingon? I said, logan, I
said we got to do something.Brother, I said, this done got
(43:28):
bad. And he looked back theresaid oh no. When he said that,
I want to pull an anchor.Yeah, Well I got an anchor
pulled up and he laid to itand we got up on plane. Right
there. I was trying to geton plane. I had them two fifty
and they had that boat straight up. Wow. I went back there to
him and said, ease off ofit, ease off of it. You
know. We eased off of it, kept that boat and the water shifting
(43:49):
and rolling over, and we wastwenty five miles off shore and have been
a bad night. We didn't haveno euper or nothing at that time.
We got it slowed down and youknow, quick thinking we was fishing to
cut the anchor and ever cooler andlife checkets we had together and hang on
to. We thought it was fishingto go down. But luckily, you
know, he got to thinking realquick because he's been going out there a
long time. And we didn't panic. We plugged the holes off, kept
(44:13):
the boat island the wards to healand it took us two hours to get
that water pumped out. Wow.And that was the closest time I ever
come to sinking out there and beingin a buying And it happened just like
that. I mean, he wasn'tthinking, you haven't been out there several
times, ain't nothing never happened,But it happened. And a lot of
people don't think that it can andwill I took my friend out here a
(44:35):
few years ago, and he washelping me at the ramp and I told
I asked him, I said,go ahead and put the plug in,
pull the straps off. I'll takecare of this up here and everything.
So he went back and put theplug in, took straps off. We
got out there. We were fishingone and thirty minutes later, and uh,
I looked back and there's water onthe floor and I was like,
(44:55):
you put the plug in, right, He said, yeah, yeah,
yeah, I put the plug in. I immediately got on that back deck.
I laid down and put my handdown there. He put the plug
in my drain hole for my life, well and my my where it should
be, it wasn't. There wasnothing there. So we were taking on
water as soon as we stopped. And I got the plug and put it
(45:20):
in and turned on the belch, and you know, we were okay.
But the point of it is isthat it can happen that quick, and
you think you got it all togetherand you think you know what you're doing,
but everybody makes mistakes. I've hadthat happen before. After that happened,
I didn't let anybody else put mydream plug in. I do it
(45:42):
now before I leave the house.Man, I'm like, I double triple
check that thing. You know,I'm just like, good heavens, I
don't want to ever see that orbe a part of that ever again and
everything. But we made it throughit, and we were just very blessed
and very fortunate and all. Butuh, you know, big boats.
Man, got a lot of big, big boats out in the water nowadays.
You know, when when I wasgrowing up and we were fishing Mesquiit
(46:05):
Lagoon, Indian River, Saint John'sall that throughout central Florida, we didn't
see thirty five and thirty five footboats with triple three hundreds on the back
of them and everything. I mean, that was this unheard of. But
now that's common and you can bein the river they're in Saint Mark's and
next thing you know, you gota you got a monster coming up on
you. And you know what's thebest thing to do. Do you try
(46:28):
to outrun it? No? Ordo you force them to pass you?
No? Pull over, take itoff plane and get ready for the wake
and just let him go around you, because you don't want him passing you
while you're up on plane. Andcatching that wake because you're going airborne.
And there's a lot of them thatyou know, I ain't speaking about everybody
(46:49):
with a big boat, but alot of them got no respect for the
smaller boats. Now a man,we've all seen that. You know,
they're they're the big dogs in theneighborhood and everything. But like you said,
it's not everybody. I got areally good friend of mine lives down
there at shell Point, and Iknow for a fact he is a he's
a smart man, and he's asafe boater, and he's got several boats
down there, and one of themis a big Everglades. But when he
(47:14):
when he leaves, he idles outbecause he knows that it's a big boat.
Man, he's a giant boat.So you know, the our point
is is we want everybody to besafe, have a good time and uh
you know, and go out andenjoy themselves and everything. But we also
hate hearing stories about people losing theirlives because of a simple thing as a
(47:35):
life fest. Yeah, and that'ssomething simple, very simple. Like I
said, that's the main thing, guys. I want y'all to make sure
your life fest is good, notinspired throat cushions, have a mirror,
have a you know, you whistleyour flares all up to date. Uh,
and just watch out for others becausejust because you're doing right don't mean
others is doing right. And youcan avoid an accident by paying attention to
(47:57):
your surroundings, just like in avehicle. That's right, it's you.
