now. Well, good Thursday morning, everybody. You're listening to the bloom
(00:27):
Daddy Experience with Sam and otis hereon news Radio eleven seventy WWVA. Want
to jump into the loss of aWest Virginia legend. Yesterday we lost Jerry
West and at eighty six years old, what an impact he had, not
(00:49):
only on the NBA, but alsohere in the state of West Virginia,
being from here, being born inCanawa County. He became the face,
the logo of the NBA. Therecords that he broke, the accolades that
(01:10):
he received during not only his playingcareer, his coaching career, his behind
the scenes office career. He livedand breathed basketball, and he is one
of the major factors that got theNBA to where it is today. Here's
(01:30):
a little bit of trivia on himthat I was not aware of that the
NBA has actually never confirmed that JerryWest is the player from the silhouette.
That's true, and that he neverwanted to be the logo. That's true
too. Jerry west Is or wasone of probably the most humble people you
(01:53):
had ever meet. For as fierceas a competitor as he was, the
person that Jerry west Is was wasvery humble and kind and giving and you
know, always wanted to share athought. Always when it came to,
(02:17):
you know, the players in theleague, he would always you know,
if they asked him for anything,he would he would do anything for the
players. The tributes that came outyesterday were were absolutely phenomenal. I mean
not just from and you know wethink of Jerry obviously as a basketball player
and a basketball executive, but formerNFL players, major League baseball, you
(02:46):
know, everybody reaching out just tosay what, you know, how this
person, you know, just wasa pillar of the sports community. You
know he you look at some ofhis accolades. I mean, he's going
into the Nasmith Hall of Fame forthe third time. He went in as
a player in nineteen eighty, hewent in as an executive, and now
he's going in as a contributor.So I mean he's the only player he's
(03:09):
the only person that's in there threetimes. I mean, it's it's it's
really it's amazing as a West Virginiaas a as a as a West Virginia
University graduate. You know, Ithink everybody in West Virginia just lost a
piece of themselves yesterday because it didn'tmatter, you know what, anything,
(03:38):
nothing mattered as far as like politicalaffiliation, what school you rooted for,
what this anything. If you werefrom West Virginia, everybody associated Jerry West
with you because oh that's where JerryWest is from, or you know,
and and everybody you know, justyou know, the people in the southern
part of the state, where youknow, Marshall University is still respected Jerry
(04:00):
West. It's the guy was like, I've never heard anybody say anything bad
about Jerry West. You know. Was he competitive? Yeah? Did he
you know, did he have manyfriends when he played? No, he
didn't want friends, you know.I mean, that's that's who he was,
(04:21):
you know. I mean I thinkone of the I mean, everybody
probably thinks that Michael Jordan is thebest player that's ever played the game.
His quote yesterday was very you know, it was very telling who Jerry West
was. He says, I'm sodeeply sad that the news of Jerry's pass
(04:43):
and he was truly a friend anda mentor, like an older brother to
me. I valued his friendship andknowledge. I always wished I could have
played against him as a competitor, but the more I came to know him,
I wish I had been his teammate. I admired his basketball insights,
and he and I shared many similaritiesto how we appre the game. He
will be forever missed, and hesays, my condolences to his wife Karen
(05:03):
and son's rip logo. That's forMichael Jordan Well, who was on a
team that beat the Lakers when Jerrywas the you know, it was the
executive Well And there's an interesting portionin that statement of you know, you
take somebody as iconic as Michael Jordanand he says, I wish I could
(05:23):
have played against him, and thenhe wanted to be But then he changed
his mind and wanted to be histeammate. You know, I mean when
you I don't know if they couldhave been teammates because their personalities are too
too similar, you know what Imean, They both you know, they're
both clutched. They both want theball at the end of the game and
everything else, you know. Andand when I found out yesterday our obviously
(05:45):
our show was over, and Iwas I was just getting ready to go
out for my other job, andI was just happened. Sometimes, you
know, I scroll through Facebook alittle bit sometimes just to get some information,
see if there's anything out there thatI need to look at. And
I saw a friend of mine postthat said rip logo Jerry West forty four
or something like that, and itwas a two minute post. I immediately
(06:09):
turned on to Dan Patrick show becausein Dan Patrick's on our sister station at
nine o'clock the Fox or Fox SportsYes, And I immediately turned over to
that because Dan and Jerry had aunique relationship. And Dan multiple times said
that he looked at Jerry. Whenhe looked at Jerry, he saw his
(06:30):
dad. And Dan Patrick's dad passedaway at the age of fifty four,
so you know, that's been awhile. He said. When he looked
at Jerry, he looked he sawhis dad. He remembers his dad taking
he remembers Dan Patrick remember his dadtaking him to games in Cincinnati because Cincinnati
had an NBA team back in theday. You don't know that I could
tell, but Oscar Robertson played forhim and everything else. Cincinnati Royals is
(06:56):
who they were, And so Danwent to the game and his dad would
say, that's the player you wantto be like, and he'd point to
Jerry West. And as Dan andJerry became friends, Dan kind of looked
at him as a father figure. And Jerry was very, very gracious to
the Dan Patrick Show. And theemotion that Dan Patrick showed on the show
(07:18):
yesterday, I know that was alot of shows in that sense. He
was truly upset. I mean therewere they played a clip from when they
were at the Super Bowl Maammy andand Kobe Bryant's helicopter had just crashed,
and after that clip they came backDan Patrick, I mean, he was
very I mean he couldn't get composedto come back on the I mean it
(07:40):
was there was a minute it waspure honest, dead air because he could
not compose himself. And one ofhis producers had to step in and say,
hey, you know, mister Westwas so gracious to join us on
that day. Blah blah blah blahblah, this and and and it took
it took Dan probably two minutes tojust kind of get back into it.
And like, you know, oneof the things he said was that happened
(08:03):
when he was on air, Likehe said, if it would have happened
at one o'clock in the afternoon, you know, you go through your emotions,
you process it and everything else, and you're ready to go. He
said, everything right there was rawand and and just to see and then
you know, I mean, theyhad Bill Platchkey from the La Times on,
they had Reggie Miller all sharing theirthoughts of Jerry West, and you
(08:26):
know, I mean, I knowwe're coming up on a little bit short
time. He will come back andrevisit a little bit more. But you
know, Jerry West, his accomplishmentswere just one of the things I heard
yesterday was right before he retired. He retired like he was in the preseason
and just realized that he wasn't goingto be the competitor that he was,
and he decided to retire. Butin his last preseason game, he had
(08:50):
a triple double. I mean,like you're you're putting up halfway decent numbers
still, but in Jerry's mind,he wasn't competing at the level that he
wanted to compete at. He waspast his so because you know, yeah,
triple doubles, nothing to could hehave played? Yeah, you know,
but I mean here's a guy thattranscended sports. I mean just you
(09:11):
know, and they say he's thebest athlete to come out of West Virginia.
He's the best basketball player, forsure, best ambassador for sure.
Randy Moss was a hell of anathlete, you know. I mean Randy
Moss could do it. He couldplay football, basketball, baseball, he
ran track. I mean, theguy was amazing, you know. Jerry
was was he was the brains inthe basketball player. But yeah, I
(09:35):
don't know if he was the bestathlete to ever come out of West Virginia,
but he was. Sure. He'sthe best ambassador for sure. Well,
we'll continue the conversation because he isa really interesting public figure. One
eight hundred and six eleven seven.Do you have a story about Jerry West
Have you ever had the opportunity tospeak to him, watch him play.
We'd love to hear your stories. One eight hundred six to four eleven seventy,
(09:56):
And we'll get into what Senator Manchinhad to say about the legend The
blim Daddy Experience with Sam and OtisNews Radio eleven seventy WWVA. Welcome back,
(10:22):
seven twenty one, The blim DaddyExperience with Otis and Sam News Radio
eleven seventy WWVA. We're gonna continuethe conversation about West Virginia legend. I
just Jerry West. Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, just froze right
there. I want to go tothe phones. We've got caller Jerry or
Charlie on the phone. Charlie,No, Charlie, it might be the
(10:46):
phones. Oh not the phones.Oh my, oh, the phones,
the phones, the wonderful, wonderfulphones. So continuing, Jerry West played
fourteen seasons with the Lost and AngelasLakers in the NBA, and the comments
and quotes like we mentioned before thatare coming out about him from all across
(11:07):
the country and all aspects of things. One that really stood out to me
was the comment by Senator Joe Manchin, when you think of basketball, you
think of Jerry West. From thecoalfields of West Virginia to the sports biggest
stages, Jerry demonstrated his mastery ofthe sport with grace and humility. He
was a world class athlete, aproud West Virginia and a great friend.
(11:31):
Rest in peace, Jerry, AndI think that sums it up. You
know, we talk about where wecome from, what people accomplished, and
otis' as you said, he washumble, And I think humility and being
humble and kind of letting your workand your accomplishments speak for themselves is a
(11:58):
wonderful train in people. And Ithink it's a trait that you know,
we're slowly seeing less and less ofunfortunately, but again, the accomplishments of
Jerry West, the legacy that he'sgoing to not only leave on the NBA
(12:20):
but also West Virginia as a state. Well. One of the things about
Jerry is the fact that in thenineteen sixty NCAA tournament, the final four,
he was named the most outstanding playerin w WU got beat in the
finals, and he barely played inthat championship game because he had four fouls
(12:41):
early on and questionable fouls by theway, maybe I mean maybe one or
two were legit, but the othertwo are very questionable. Because he was
back in the day, it's notlike today's officials where they you know,
they referee all the time, andthey see this and they see that,
and you have the advantages of television. The officials back then didn't know how
he played. They'd never seen himplay before, so his aggressive style was
(13:05):
new. Was you know that whatthey thought? You know, they thought
they saw something that maybe wasn't theresix four eleven seventy. If you have
stories about seeing Jerry West play ormaybe went to college with him, when
we want to hear your stories, one hundred six to four eleven seventy,
we have a caller. Is itCharlie Beck. We're gonna try Charlie again.
Hey, good morning, Charlie,Good morning. So tell us,
(13:30):
UH, tell us your your memoryor story of Jerry West. Okay,
back between my eighth grade and ninthgrade year, UH I went to Virginia
Military Institute to the Jerry West basketballcamp and UH, first couple of days
I was there, no no sightof Jerry West whatsoever. But on the
(13:54):
third day he shows up and UHwants to put on a my shooting clinic.
You know, it kind of kindof teaches how the proper way to
hold the ball, shoot the ball. Had all the kids lining up and
sat down behind the bucket and hepicked me out of the crowd to rebound
for him. So he took hisfirst shot and missed it, and I
(14:20):
chased the ball, threw it backto him. Took the second shot and
missed it, chased the ball, threw it back to him, and then
for the next half an hour straight, I just stood underneath the bucket and
as I help to the net, threw him back to him. He walked
all over that court, talked atthe same time, and never missed a
(14:41):
shot after that. That's a prettycool memory, right there. I know
you said you were like you werein junior high, middle school. What
years was this, Oh, Jesuswas I graduated in eighty two, So
okay, So Jerry had left thebut he was he was still yeah,
I mean he was still in playingshape, so to speak. Yeah,
(15:05):
yeah, all right, man,Hey, thanks for the story. That's
a that's an awesome story, bythe way. Thanks. Yeah, I
mean, that's that's pretty cool, you know. And before we got Charlie
there, you know, I wassaying, how you know he was the
MVP of the Most Outstanding Player. They didn't do they don't do m VP
Most Outstanding Player of the of thenineteen sixty Final four. He was the
(15:26):
MVP in the in the NBA Finalson a losing team. So you know,
the Celtics won, but he wasnamed the MVP of the Finals.
And you never see that, well, it was hardly you don't see it
anymore for sure. But when Itold you this, one of one of
the little facts that I thought ofyesterday was so Jerry's the only player to
(15:50):
ever win the MVP on a losingteam. Chuck Alley, who's from West
Virginia University and Warwood, was theonly player in the NFL to and the
Super Bowl MVP on a losing teamsuper Bowl five, the Colts and the
Cowboys. He played for the Cowboys. He was named the MVP and the
losing team. So two West Virginiagraduates. I mean, it's the story
(16:11):
of West Virginia, always the bridesmaid, never the bride, you know what
I mean. So just that's fittingthat it's two West Virginia guys that ever
did that, you know, theonly two that ever did it. Well,
And kind of back to your storya bit on Dan Patrick and his
reaction. You know, sometimes youknow, you may not know the person
(16:34):
personally, it's one thing when youlose somebody that you know, but I
know. Here recently there's been somepeople that have passed that when I hear
it, it kind of hits mea little bit different because you don't know
them. Toby keith Is is themost recent example. Never knew him.
I've had the opportunity to meet hima couple times, but it's somebody who
(16:56):
kind of grew up with. Sowhen it happens, it touches you a
little bit differently. Well, AndI think the easiest way for me to
say this, and I kind ofmentioned in the first segment there is is
the fact that you know, asa West Virginian. I think for every
West Virginian yesterday, a little pieceof them passed away as well. Yeah,
(17:18):
anybody that had any contact with JerryWest. I mean Charles Berkley said
it best on the pregame last nightof the NBA Finals. He said,
you know, he said the worldwas better off yesterday than it was today.
That's very well said. So yeah, very well said. Yeah,
loss of a West Virginia legend. We get back. We're going to kind
of continue in the sports sports worlda little bit a big decision made yesterday
(17:42):
in swimming the Blue Daddy Experience withSam and Otis News Radio eleven seventy WWVA
(18:04):
six The Blue Dotty Experience with Otisand Sam News Radio eleven seventy WWVA.
So Otis, you have a quickstory, Yeah, just quick story.
So keeping on the Jerry West thing. You know, it was funny because
anytime Jerry West came back to sayWU for some sort of an accolade or
whatever, if the people knew thatJerry West was coming that day, like
(18:26):
ticket sales would go skyrocketing through theroof because people just wanted to be in
the arena where he was. Andabout ten years ago, give or take
a couple of years, his sonJohnny, his youngest son, Johnny,
actually played basketball for WVU ward numberfour, half of his dad's four.
Okay, and Johnny was an okay. I mean he could have played basketball
(18:48):
at probably a smaller school and beena superstar. He could shoot the eyes
out of the ball, okay. And that's what the players love, that's
what the fans loved about him.He was a good looking kid, I
mean, like almost model material. But when he would get in the gate,
he couldn't play. He was avery good defense, you see what
I'm saying, You know what Imean. Didn't have his dad's intensity,
but he could shoot. And justwhen he would get in the game,
(19:11):
anytime he would hit a three orany type of shot, the coliseum would
go crazy. You would you thoughtJerry West was playing when he hit a
shot. And it's just funny becauseI mean, you know, you know,
Jerry West never came to If hedid, you never knew he was
there. That's you know, ifhe went to one of his son's games,
because I obviously it's the NBA seasonand you know, so he's working
too, So if he made itto one, you never knew he was
(19:33):
in the arena. Well, heprobably also didn't want to pull attention to
him and not the team or courtexactly. Yeah. So anyway, I
just and that's a sign of thehumbleness. Oh absolutely. Yeah. So
from the from the court to theto the pool yesterday actually from the court
to the court to the court.Yeah, okay, either way you want
to look at it. So finallya victory for women in sports. Leah
(20:00):
Thomas lost a legal battle. Nowthis is over the rules that prevented trans
swimmers from competing in women's elite swimmingevents. Now it went to the highest
level of the court system in thesport with the World Aquatics governing body now
(20:22):
and basically she was challenging he Shewas challenging the twenty twenty two ruling that
banned the trans swimmers competing in femaleevents. She asked the court to overturn
these rules because stating that they wereinvalid on lawful indiscriminatory Well, no,
(20:45):
just do what Rally Gaines does. It's a he okay, he no.
It was basically turned down and saidno. But finally there is there is
something positive defending female athletes in femalesports and if it starts here, that's
(21:07):
where it needs to start. Andwhat this also does, this puts an
end to the possibility of Thomas makingthe Olympic team. Now can try out
for the men's team. That's notgonna happen. Wouldn't make it, absolutely
wouldn't even make it. The nextstep needs to happen. And Riley Gaines
said this actually yesterday on her podcastthat now the NCAA needs to take similar
(21:33):
decisive action and strip Thomas of allthe awards titles and records he stole from
deserving female athletes. Absolutely, Look, it's just common sense. I mean
the fact that it actually had togo to a hearing. I mean,
where are we in society when youlook at when you look at a person
that still has a twig and joggleberries toughed underneath their swimsuits. Yeah,
(21:56):
and you're saying, oh, we'regonna let this person swim because they think
that they're a woman. No.I look, if I think I'm a
dog and I want to run arounda dog park, what are people gonna
think about me? You know whatI mean? That's just like I'm not
gonna be I'm not gonna go aroundsniffing dog's butts like all the like,
pretending I'm a dog. Well, and when you make arguments like that,
(22:17):
the people that defend will say, well, that's just extreme. No,
it's not your straight I can't walkand say walk around and say I'm I'm
a black lesbian. I'm not.You can't. You can't just say I'm
this when it's not a fact. You can't do that. But my question
with this situation that it got tothe point, like you said, went
to the level of the court system. First of all, the fact that
(22:41):
it had to get there is ridiculous. Second of all, is this a
chink in the armor of we arefinally waking up from being woke and the
whole cancel culture and everything that happenedthat has torn down a lot of that
his enabled a lot of this stuffto happen. Are we finally starting to
(23:03):
see a reverse in in the wokemovement? Are we finally starting to wake
up? Well? I hope so, I mean, we can't you know,
you can't actually look at these peopleand think that you know that this
is that this is right we haveyou know, it's and it's trickling down.
(23:29):
This nonsense is trickling down here inWest Virginia. In Bridgeport, West
Virginia, there were four young middleschool students that stepped out of a track
meet. All the runner yeah,no, these girls there was there's there's
allegedly a transgender person in middle schoolthat is that throws the shot put in
the discus, right, These fourgirls stepped in to compete and then they
(23:52):
stepped out and they these are twelve, thirteen, fourteen year old kids.
Where you doing the jobs of theparents. They're making the statement or doing
the jobs of the officials. Becausehere, you know, I have a
friend who has a daughter that's gonnabe a freshman at John Marshall next year,
and she is a good shot anddiscus person. Okay, like I
(24:17):
think she has a state record,to be honest with you, Okay,
as a middle schooler, and there'sgonna be there's gonna be a time when
she's probably gonna have to compete againstthis person. What these kids need to
do is anytime you have somebody that'sa transgender athlete and you're a female athlete,
(24:38):
just step out. Don't compete.You're you're hurt. I mean,
you're standing up for your rights, okay, and you're being robbed of your
opportunity to compete. So sacrifice thatone race, that one competition whatever to
say, look, I'm not throwinguntil you do something this and if they
(25:00):
all stick together, yeah, guesswhat's gonna happen. You're gonna see change,
because that's what happens. And that'sand that goes back to my main
point to this entire conversation that we'vehad multiple times when these different stories pop
up, is you do not seewomen who are calling themselves men stepping in
(25:25):
to different arenas, whether it's sports, whether it's careers, being an influencer
to move up in the world becausethey've the men are calling themselves women because
they can compete and get further aheadpretending to be a female, and the
opportunities are more beneficial for them, and they're taking opportunities away from really women.
(25:55):
That's where the message is being lost. This is not I mean,
all you have to do is lookat the men who are calling themselves women
to get into the prison system. You know, there's all this different stuff
going on. You you see there'sa video of Riley Gaines speaking about the
NCAA swim match and they're in thelocker room and here's Leah Thomas nude.
(26:21):
This, yes, this trickles downinto other portions of sport, the locker
room conversation, Like, there's somuch that goes into this. It's not
just who's gonna win a track meet, who's gonna win a swim meet.
There's a lot of other outside portionsthat needs to be put into consideration.
Loss of things, loss of scholarships, loss of opportunities for the female,
(26:47):
loss of endorsements for the for thefemale athletes. But it all goes back
to these are These are men whocannot succeed or win in their own gender's
division of sport, so they're callingthemselves something else so that they can dominate
and win. That's what it comesback back to. I honestly believe so,
(27:11):
and our young women and our athletesare the ones that are losing.
And I'm glad to see that thiscourt has spoke up and said, uh
uh, we're not doing this. We're not playing this game. If you
want to be a female swimmer, you've got to be a female plain and
simple. Seven forty five The bloomDaddy Experience with samon Otis News Radio eleven

seventy WWVA. Welcome back, sevenfifty one The bloom Daddy Experience with samon
(28:00):
Otis News Radio eleven seventy WWVA.Let's get into some local stories. Authorities
in Jefferson County are investigating a fatalcrash. It's that time of year.
Be careful people. People are drivinglike crazy. Actually had somebody pass me
the other day. That was justridiculous. Now, this crash happened late
(28:21):
Tuesday night, involving a twenty yearold Nathan Eddie. First responders found Eddie
dead inside of an overturned Subaru WRX. Investigators believe the young man took on
a curve too fast, which ledhim to lose control. And I hope
I'm correct in saying the WRX isthe suber reversion of a sports car.
(28:45):
It's one of their sporty type ofvehicles. Out of Payden City, West
Virginia, students at the local highschool are being forced to attend classes elsewhere
next school year. Payden City HighSchool in Wetzell County will shut down on
July first. W TRAFF reports SuperintendentCasey Porter made the decision earlier this week
(29:07):
because of the school's proximity to thechemical compound. PCE officials are calling the
order temporary and the school's future remainsin limbo and oh is Peyton City is
a very small school, correct itis? I mean, obviously it was.
It's a single A school in WestVirginia said, that's the smallest classification.
(29:29):
I mean when I was coaching backin the nineties, early to mid
nineties at Mount de Chano, whichat the time was the smallest school in
the OVAC, Peyton's like, Ithink it went mount to Channel one hundred.
I can't remember, maybe Blair SaintJohn's, you know, I mean,
I can't remember. But Peyton Citywas down there towards the bottom,
(29:51):
Okay, as far as enrollment, and Wetzel County has four high school four
schools of four school systems. Sothey have the Magnolia New Martinsville, they
have Peyton City, they have theValley High School, which is out in
Pine Grove, and then they havehundred now hundreds out in the middle of
(30:11):
the sticks. I mean, soif you're gonna consolidate, their best consolidation
would be to go to Valley becauseit's just over the mountain. Okay,
there's no way those kids from hundredcould get into New Martinsville in a reasonable
amount of time to go to Magnolia. Peyton City and New Martinsville are like
ten to fifteen minutes apart tops.I mean, it's the farthest to the
(30:32):
farthest, not counting traffic. I'mtalking as the crow flies. So,
I mean, I understand when you'rea small school and you have an identity
that you want to maintain that identity, but at some point in time it's
just not financially feasible to operate aschool that's graduating fifteen to twenty five kids
(30:56):
a year. You know, Imean, I think if you you add
and I I'm one hundred percent.I'm going to apologize if I'm wrong,
but I think you know, ifyou added up the High School of Peyton
City probably don't have more than onehundred kids, maybe one hundred and twenty
at the most. I mean, that's that's hard to maintain. Yeah.
Well, and if you think aboutand I don't know how old their buildings
(31:18):
are down there, but if they'reolder eighties and older than that built in
the eighties and older, I meanjust heating those structures alone is costly.
Yeah, I mean I've been intheir school. I don't want to say
it's super new, but I meanit's not. It's not like an older,
older school. Yeah, the school'snot in the hundreds, is for
(31:38):
or you know, it might befifty years old or sixty years old,
and it's it's kind of a youknow, I mean you can see where
it's it's easily to maintain, it'seasy to you know, probably it's probably
energy efficient, so to speak, compared to some of the older schools.
But you know, when you're heatingand cooling a school and and you know
(32:00):
you're doing you know, the electricityand everything else. I mean, it's
just a burden. Well, andthink about I mean, we've had the
conversations recently about the price of thingscurrently and they just continue to go up.
And when we talk about that,we of course think about our own
households, but when you think ofthings like schools, hospitals, that affects
(32:22):
them. Also you're heating and withthe schools transportation, paying the gas for
buses, all of that adds up. And you know, I understand the
small towns, you know, theydon't like the word consolidation. No,
I come from a consolidated school district. It was it was a big deal
when that went on. Well, when Wheeling Park consolidated, I mean at
(32:44):
the very first year, I meanyou still had your you know, you
had your three school faction, youhad your world wid You're Wheeling and your
TRAIDO. A few people. Bythe time I was there, which was
nine ten years later, eight seven, eight, nine ten years later,
that kind of it was still there, but it wasn't as prevalent. It
was dissipated. Yeah, I meanit's still there to this day. And
(33:05):
I think mostly in jest, butlike everybody, kids, everybody, because
if you if you're Wheeling Park andyou have a green card which means you're
from Warwood that you know, youyou you kind of move up a little
faster. Ah, gotcha. Butit's it's basically, I mean, that's
kind of a joke, you know. I mean, it's since but the
people are proud. I mean they'rethey're they're kind of separated from the city
(33:27):
of Wheeling a little bit, youknow, by River Road, and you
know, they have their you know, their own way of things and thinking
and and you know they're proud oftheir little community, which they should be,
and you know, but it justit just became kind of a running
joke at Wheeling Park. So yeah, well we'll see what happens down in
Paydon City as this continues. Andjust a real quick announcement. This came
(33:47):
out after yesterday's show. Mark yourcalendars for September twenty fifth, because the
planners at West Banco Arena and theCapitol Theater are added again. They have
announced David actor David Kochner, hewill be in Wheeling on the twenty fifth.
He's well known for his roles inthe Office and Anchorman. Now he
is the guy that wore the cowboyhat and anchor. He was the weather
(34:07):
man, right, No, SteveCarell is the sports guy. Okay,
I think he was the sports fromAnchorman. Yeah, he wore the cowboy
hat. He's been in a coupleother TV shows. Tickets do go on
sale tomorrow and he will be performingat the Capitol Theater. I'm guessing it's
a comedy act stand probably stand upcomedy. You'll know him as soon as
(34:28):
you see him and as soon asyou hear his voice. He's got one
of those voices that you know exactlywho he is. You think he's been
some other things too. Yeah,of course, I'm not a huge job.
I mean, like I said,I've seen one episode of the Office
and that that was enough for me, which was the which was the very
first episode, and I'm like, this isn't gonna this, this parade at
(34:50):
the March, but it just keepsgrowing, all the different things they're bringing
to the Capital. William Shatner andthe big one coming up here in a
day or two. Donnie Donnie osmonseaking of Donny Osmond. We have him
up in the next hour. You'regonna be interviewing. I'm gonna be interviewing.
So if you are a Donny fan, stay tuned because I sit down
and talk with the one and onlyDonny Osmond and find out if there's anything
(35:15):
he can't do, because if youlook at his background, he's basically done
it all. Seven fifty eight onthis beautiful sunshine Thursday morning, indeed number
one touch show in the Ohio Valley. This is the bloom Daddy Experience.
Your host, bloom Daddy. Hisgoal inform, entertain and tick people off.
(35:36):
The bloom Daddy Experience on News Radioeleven seventy WWVA starts now. It
is eight oh six. The bloomDaddy Experience with Sam otis News Radio eleven
seventy WWVA. So you've probably seenthese three words up and down Main Street
(36:00):
here and wheeling love life here.We saw them yesterday walking into the studio
in the morning. Yes, youknow, you wouldn't think that three words
on bike racks would cause so muchcontroversy. So first thing this morning,
I'm one of those people. Ihate to admit it. I open my
(36:22):
eyes, I jump on my phone, I'm that person. I look at
emails, I look at Facebook, social media, and one of the first
first posts I see are about thesenew bike racks. I didn't know they
were bike racks. I thought theywere just decorative, but I guess they're
bike racks. Well, somebody Iknow posted something about you know, here's
(36:45):
the a look at the part ofthe new streetscape, and then can't wait
for the negative comments. And ofcourse there were negative comments. Listen,
I get it. People are frustrated. I don't see the need for them,
but it's part of what they've decidedto do. I think the frustration
(37:09):
and otis you may or may notagree with me. I think the frustration
with this entire streetscape situation is aswe see things progress. What we're seeing
is landscaping done, plants being planted, which personally, I don't think they're
the best looking plants. We seethese bike racks going up, we see
(37:34):
the garbage cans being installed, butwe're not seeing the roads paved, and
I that is where the frustration lies. People are tired of hearing their cars
basically be banged and tossed around becauseof the potholes, because of the giant
(37:57):
iron coverings that are across the thecraters that are going down Main Street and
Market Street. I personally dealt withit last week when I got a flat
tire out of nowhere from hitting oneof the big iron covers. I get
it. I understand. So tothose that are doing the street, well,
(38:17):
you can't please pave the road, but you can't pave it until you're
done with what's going underneath the road. What are you gonna You're gonna pave
it and then tear it back up. You have to finish. I mean
you can see right here in frontof the old Best Western or the old
Wheeling in that they just tore upa big portion of that. I mean
it's three to four feet the Imean it's it's deep because it's part of
(38:39):
the water line thing. You haveto finish everything before you can pave it.
That's I understand that. But itseems like it feels like they keep
going back and forth. You know, they were up here for months right
here in this you know, fourway area. Then all of a sudden,
about two months ago, they weredone and they were moving down the
hill. Now they're back. Whywasn't everything done when they were up here
(39:04):
initially, right down here in frontof the mall center. This week they
tore up some of the sidewalks thatthey already poured, and now we have
to walk out back in front oftraffic again. What I'm talking about is
the back and forth. If you'regonna do everything in a certain area,
do it all at one time.Maybe you can't. You're sure it makes
(39:29):
sense to the average person that that'swhat you would do, But we don't
know what the plans are. Wedon't know what There are certain things that
there's probably a certain order that youhave to do the things in, and
then sometimes maybe you run into somethingthat you didn't expect because you don't necessarily
know what's under when you tear itup, you don't know what's under there,
you know. I mean, I'mwatching them. Last week they tear
(39:50):
up part of it because they hadto run the electric wire. And they
didn't tear up anything that was alreadydown. They just it was never done.
They tore up part of the oldright out here in front of the
mall Center. No, they toreup they had put in the little pink
bumpy strips like the gradation from thesidewalk down that was all brand new.
(40:10):
They've tore it up. Walking intothe alley by the Mall center, they've
tore it up. That was allcompleted and they have tore it up again.
So I guess my point is,you know a lot of people when
they're venting their frustrations on social media, it's not because they don't like the
(40:31):
new things that are being done, like the new garbage cans, the benches
are nice, all of that.I think the frustration stands to it doesn't
seem like it's the top priority itemsthat should be being completed. Well,
when it comes to the bike cracks, Okay, so we have three here
(40:52):
in front of the Capitol Theater. There are three across the street. Yeah,
there's a good bit. Why dowe need six bike racks for this
this venue and across the street.I don't know of many people that are
riding their bikes to come see ashow at the Capitol Theater. Maybe it's
(41:13):
for the scooters, but maybe toput the scooters in between them so that
they're just not strewn all over thestreet like normal. Yeah, okay,
I can give you that. Here'sone thing I did think though, at
least They don't say live, laugh, love, which has been you know,
this decorative saying that's gone on forabout ten years. So at least
(41:36):
it doesn't say those three words true, you know, but no, it
it just cracked me up that well, I think they're going to pave next
month. That's the goal is thatthey they've said July twenty twenty five.
So, I mean, I know, I know. And there are certain
things, you know, sometimes maybeyou run it like after you've done it,
maybe you run into another problem andit's like, oh crap, we're
(41:59):
going to tear this up. Whenwe did, we did because you ran
into a problem you didn't know existed. It just feels like it's been going
on foret what has been going onforever between the bridges and the streetscape and
this and that, you know. But the bike thing, that was a
Glen Elliott thing. He thinks thateverybody's going to move to downtown Wheeling and
ride their bike to work. Now, who the hell's going to ride their
(42:19):
bike up the hill in Main Street? Why not put those down north closer
to the trail like in the HeritagePort area. Those bike racks maybe they're
going up every well, why aren'tthey on the trail? There be?
They might be, But the thingis the trails there for you to ride
your bikes. I'm not riding mybike in downtown Wheeling. We're not in
area. This isn't a big citywhere you have bike messengers, you know,
(42:44):
let's know they've fallen a crater,you know. I mean, but
that was Glen Elliott's big plan, that to have moved people into Wheeling,
and then they would ride their biketo work, and they would do this,
and they would do that, andthat's all. If I live in
Woodsdale, how in the hell amI riding my bike to Wheeling. Well
there's the problem. Just because youlive in downtown Wheeling, right, and
(43:06):
this would be convenient for you, doesn't mean the majority of those that that
the money should be be spent. How many people can actually live in downtown
Wheeling. Yeah, I would loveto do a survey of how many people
drive into Wheeling to work as orlive outside of the actual downtown limits.
Hey, I live in elm Grove. I'm gonna I'm just gonna get on
the interstate ride my bike door.Right, Yeah, it doesn't Well,
(43:30):
you could ride the trail into downtownWheeling. But do that, I can't
ride it from Bethlehem. Well, yeah, do that in January too,
Who wants to do that? Yeah, that's where a lot of the times
the decision making is not great.Yeah, we're not We're not a war
We're not Charleston, South Carolina, where it's relatively warm all the time.
No, you know, you mighthave a couple of cold days here and
(43:51):
there, but it's relatively warm allthe time. Or we're not Orlando,
Florida. We're not a flat city. For God's sake, I will say
the other day though, I didsee other day though, and it didn't
come out right. I did seesomebody on one of the scooters. God
bless them, Yes, and flyingthose got some gidda up and go.
(44:12):
I'll take your word for work.I mean i've seen people on them.
I mean there's there's not a shotand hell I'm getting on one. I
mean I would like to. ButI if I'm gonna do it, I'm
gonna do it like on the trailor someplace flat and give it a try.
Yeah I'm not I'm doing I'm notdoing it near moving vehicles. Oh,
absolutely not. I'm not. I'mnot You know, I really don't
(44:34):
want to do it, period,And if I'm going to do it,
I better have a helmet and paddingon. Oh could you see us doing
it? Oh goodness, I don'tthink that would be pretty at I was.
I was going to try it whenI first saw them in Salt Lake
City or San Antonio, I can'tremember where, and then I chickened out,
thought better of it. Don't needa broken hip. A fifteen again,
(44:59):
yeah, A fifteen. The BloomdaddyExperience with samon OTAs News Radio eleven
seventy WWVA is eight twenty one Thebloom Daddy Experience with samon OTAs News Radio
(45:25):
eleven seventy WWVA. So surely I'mgonna be talking to the one and only
Donnie Osmond. But before we getto that and him, I wanted to
remind everybody this Sunday is Father's Day. It is it is Father's Day,
and don't forget treat him with somethingnice. Whether it's I don't know,
(45:49):
all right, otis what would youwant Father's Day? What makes you happy?
You know, I'm easy. Idon't necessarily need my kids to spend
money on me, but you know, hey, let's just give me a
call and say, hey, let'sgo out and get something to eat.
I don't care if I have topay for it or not, you know
what I mean, just time, just some time and you know, maybe
sit down and talk and and youknow, if they want to get me
(46:13):
something and you know, they cankeep I could give them something. They
can each buy me one thing andit's under ten dollars. So there you
go. I don't have a problemwith it. But see, with Mother's
Day, you can kind of fallback on the traditional Mother's Day bouquet.
You know, there's no kind ofhanging plans you've got, you know,
you can go by you know, you can go to any store basically.
Yeah. See, for dad, there's not really the the bouquet equivalent,
(46:40):
do you think unless your dad's likea golfer and you're getting him a dozen
of golf balls, you know thatkind of thing. But there's not that
traditional backup plan as a gift forFather's Day. My go to is always,
and I hope he's not listening,it's kind of a variety of dad's
(47:00):
favorite snacks. Yeah, I mean, you know the things that mom says,
you know, you probably shouldn't beeaten those. That's what you're treat
him with. You know you couldmy kids could go to the dollar store
and get me a thing of cashewsor peanuts or something, and I'd be
okay with that. Well, Pandorahas something for dad. Pandora, Yeah,
(47:22):
why get your dad something like youknow, the old the lame mug,
World's Best Dad, something like that. You got your mom something nice
like jewelry. So we introduce youto a Pandora charm bracelet for men this
Father's Day. Don't get dad somethinglame like tools, but I like tools.
(47:43):
Treat him as well as you treatyour mom. Get him a Pandora
charm bracelet. Charm bracelet. Choosecharms for everything your dad likes, football,
beer, cats, the remote control, some cold cuts charm bracelet.
Why his mom the only one whocould wear her life on her wrist anyway,
(48:04):
Well, it's because she's Get yourdad a Pandora charmbracelet for Father's Day.
Either that or some tools. Mykids do not. I'm telling him
right now, do not buy metools. They don't get used. That
doesn't say you have to know howto use them. Though I know how
to use tools. I am Iam one better at using tools than bloon
(48:25):
Day or my dad. Oh really, oh yeah, my dad. My
dad doesn't have to like he alwayshas a guy for something. Ah,
gotcha. I can I can doI can do some things. I just
don't like to let people know Ican do them because then they ask you
to help them. Yes that yeah, then you're the go to person.
(48:47):
Well here's something this weekend. Ifyou want to get out of town and
take dad somewhere for for uh Father'sDay, you could go to Tennessee before
okay, for the ore See Cola, which I didn't even know was still
around. Oh, I have arcCola at my house. Oh okay.
So it's the rc Cola Moonpie Festivaland it's happening this weekend in Tennessee,
(49:10):
and it's in the Bedford County region, and it celebrates the this iconic southern
sweet combination. Talk about a sugarhigh. It's the annual Arcy Cola Moon
Moonpie Festival, and it happens inthe tiny village of bell Buckle. Of
course that's a great name. Ofcourse, where are you from? Bail
(49:31):
Buckle? That's how they say ittoo. The event includes a parade,
clogging performances, live music, andthe crowning of the RC Cola King and
the Moonpie Queen. The gathering culminateswith the cutting and sharing of the world's
largest moonpie. You can keep themoon pie, I'll take the RCY Cola.
(49:58):
Yeah. I Cola is the bestcola out there. It trumps pepsi
and oh yeah, I couldn't tellyou the last time I didn't like I
said, I didn't even know.Respects still around. Okay, RC Cola
Royal Crown, Right, that's whatit stands for. I would. In
(50:19):
fact, I'm not a big I'mnot a big soda drinker, and I
say that I'll go out and probablybuy one today, But I put it
in your head. So I boughta six pack of Arci Cola probably like
a month ago, a month anda half, and I still have two
bottles left. So that tells youhow much soda did I drink? Okay,
but if and it's just like everyone, there's there's two things. Because
(50:39):
you can't get it in a fountain. There's like OURC cola. If I'm
going to have one, that's wherethat's my go to, or if I
can't have access to the Arcy cola. I'll get a fountain pepsi because I
think fountain pepsi is the that's that'spretty darn good. It's better than a
can or a bot. Oh yeah, fountain pop in general that I'm not
(51:00):
I'm big. I'm not. I'mnot a big soda drinker. Now,
I'll every once in a while I'lldo a root beer. Oh see,
I'm not a root beer fan.Just speaking of it's just a change of
and I drink. I try todrink a lot more water than, you
know, than anything else. Butevery once in a while you just have
to have something that that has someflavor. And if I drink, if
I get rootier, I try toget the no sugar root beer. Well,
(51:21):
I just gave myself away. Mydad is listening, but he said
he does not want a charm braceletfor Father's Day. So sorry about your
luck, pops, She's already gotit. But speaking of speaking of soda
or pop. Yeah, saw avideo last night on social media doctor Pepper.
I am not a doctor Pepper fan, have never liked it. The
(51:44):
new trend is fountain doctor Pepper withpickles. Okay, in place of I
did see where doctor pepper tied pepsifor the number two. Yeah, soda.
I don't get the whole pickle thingpeople are putting turning everything into pickle
flavored something or other, pickle, popcorn, pickle chips. There's nothing wrong
(52:06):
with that. I like pickles andpop Oh, it's this new social media
trend in it's you ever drink straightpickle juice? No, but my brother
does. If you ever get acramp, take a drinking pickle juice.
Well, and it's supposed to stophiccups too. Okay, I'll take your
word for that one. All right, We're done with a pickle conversation.
(52:27):
Up next, yeah, really,Up next, we are talking to the
one and only Donnie Osmond, whois going to be here in Wheeling,
right here in this theater next Tuesday, on the eighteenth, So stay tuned
for that. I call it.They call it puppy love. You never
even heard it, so I know, I know. Goodness. Eight twenty
(52:51):
eight, Thursday Morning, The BlueDaddy Experienced salmon otis Welcome back to the
bloom Daddy Experience with Sam and otishere on news Radio eleven seventy WWVA.
(53:13):
So I've gotten the opportunity to interviewa lot of people. But I'll tell
you what. When I told somefriends I'm going to be interviewing this gentleman
here on the phone with me rightnow, I had tears from friends of
jealousy. Who am I talking about? I'm talking about the one and only
Donnie Osmond? Good morning, Donnie, oh Sam, good morning? How
are you? I'm good? I'mgood. So why are we talking?
(53:37):
You're going to be performing right herein Wheeling on June eighteenth. Everybody is
so excited to have you here.Well, I'm not just performing. I'm
actually bringing my award winning Las Vegasshow to Willing. And when I say
that, I really mean it,because sometimes producers and artists to kind of
(53:57):
pare it down, especially a bigLas Vegas show, the parent down a
little bit when they go on tour. Not this one. I want everyone
to see how why why would wereceive so many awards on the show.
So I'm bringing the whole production. That's a that's fantastic. And why why
Wheeling? What what brought you toto pop up here? Well? I
(54:19):
decided to take the entire summer.Uh, you know, that's my time
off away from Las Vegas. Isaid, no, I'm taking the show
on the road. So we're hittingas many cities as we possibly can across
all across the country, six citiesin about two months. Oh so so
you have a light schedule this summer. It's very very light. Yeah,
(54:39):
yeah, Luefully, I could seethe light of day light right. Okay,
So I've got to ask your resume, TV, Broadway, Radio,
film competition, TV, of course, singing, hosting Vegas even born from
some research furniture collection that you havewith your wife, and I see you
(55:00):
to tinker around. Let's not forgetracing cars and racing cars, but I
also saw you like to tinker tinkeras a bee keeper. Is there anything
that you can't do? There's nograss growing underneath my feet, baby,
No. I just I live lifeto exploit and you can tell that in
the show that I do. Imean, it's just NonStop, but I
(55:22):
do love lots to just enjoy life. I mean I live it to it
sport. So you've been doing thisfor six decades, I mean started at
five years old. Looking back, would would would you change anything? That's
a very good question because you know, through six decades the show business,
(55:43):
you look back and say I shouldhave done that. One should look from
But you know what, Sam,you make the best decision you can in
everything you do. Uh. Ididn't think the Masked Singer would be as
big as it was. But whenI said one by the way first,
it should have won the way.But you know, Key Payne was really
good. I have to say,I've had to lose to lose somebody.
(56:05):
It was keep paying. It's fine, But I agree with you. I
thought I did a pretty dark goodjob. I started that whole thing,
and I didn't think that would beas big as it turned out. That
Joseph and the amazing technically dream Cup, I had no idea that was going
to turn out amazingly. Dancing withthe Starts, I wanted to win,
didn't think i'd win, but Iwon. So all of these things throughout
(56:29):
these six decades of show business isculminated into this one show. So it's
it's just jam back with I doa wrap. If you can believe that
if I do a rap ten minutewrap and encompasses six decades in ten minutes,
it's become a fan favorite in theshow. But the segment of the
show that I really look forward tois called the request segment. I put
(56:52):
all sixty five albums that I've doneon the huge screen behind me, and
anyone in the audience can pick anysong from Eddie album I've ever done,
and we do it so the showchanges every night. So okay, So
you talked about the audience and thefan interaction after all these years, I'm
sure you have plenty, But whatis the craziest like fan interaction you've had?
(57:13):
Because I have a couple here inthe studio with me that are listening
in that one of them, whenI told them, she broke into tears
just when the announcement that you werecoming to Wheeling, and all she's been
talking about is puppy Love for thepast couple of weeks. So I've got
to ask craziest fan interaction. Oh, somebody tried to repel off the balcony
to get to my room. That'sThat's the first thing that comes to my
(57:36):
mind. Wow. You know what'sreally interesting about that is I went through
a period of time when I wastrying to change my image after a teeny
bopper career, and I didn't wantto sing puppy Love. Well, then
I grew up and I realized thatsong doesn't just belong to me, It
belongs to like your associate. Itmeans a lot of their childhood. And
in fact that that's the second songI sing in the sublet all good You're
(57:59):
gonna and I treat it with respect. They don't make fun of it or
anything that's like you know I usedto, but now you just you treat
it with respect, making a lotof ladies happy right now. Knowing that
that song is right at the verybeginning of the set, I've got to
say that is a part of theshow, Sam is when I get into
(58:20):
Mula. A lot of people don'tknow I'm Captain Shang in the Disney movie
Mulan. So when I get westart this thing, and Disney gave me
the rights to actually use the filmin my show. And when I start
sinking, let's get down to business. The looks and some of the people's
faces in the audience is kind oflike that was you. And the dancing.
(58:44):
The dancing in this number is unbelievablebecause and you know the TV show,
so you think you can dance?Yes, okay. The nappy tabs
are the people is a husband andwife team. They created that show.
They're the one that we all theamazing choreography. They choreograph this show.
I mean, I got the bestof the best to help me put this
show together. That's why I'm bringingthe entire production on the show, because
(59:07):
I want everybody to see all thework that we've all put into putting the
show together, right right through theyears. I mean, of course,
Donnie and Marie goes hand in hand. Is there anybody musically that would be
a dream uh collaborator with for youthat you would love to take the stage
(59:27):
with, Not not that Marie isn'tperfect, but somebody that you would dream
to share the stage with. Oh, there's so many talented people out there
I'd love to do it with.Or let's see who else would I on
the top? Nice on the top? Nice and one of the things about
(59:50):
the show again wouldn't be too bad. Oh, that would be a good
pairing. That would be a reallygood pair of that one again we're talking
to If you don't recognize the voiceDon Osmond. The show happening here at
the Capitol Theater June eighteenth. Oneof the things that is really special about
the show happening June eighteenth is thecharitable aspect and City of Hope if you
(01:00:12):
want to let our listeners know aboutthat. Well, there's a lot of
horrible cancer cases going on in diabetes. And I went and finally took a
tour of this facility not too longago, a couple of months, not
a month ago. It was unbelievablefam the research that they're doing and some
things they told me that please don'ttalk about it yet because we're going to
not so soon, but they aremaking some breakthrough. So I decided to
(01:00:37):
donate a portion of my ticket SILFto City of Hope during this long summer
concert tour. That's a wonderful aspect. And for the people who have purchased
tickets or or buying tickets, dorealize that part of your part of your
price is going to such a valuablecause here helping a lot of people across
(01:00:59):
the count So just to wrap itup, very very yes, very fortunate
over the years, and you've gotto give back, and this is a
very small way for me to atleast do something for that horrible dread at
the jeeps. And again, justreal quick, we're going to wrap this
up here in about we have abouta minute left, Donnie, it's summertime.
(01:01:19):
What's your favorite ice cream flavor?Oh? Uh, chocolate chocolate chip.
Is there anything else on the planet? Oh my god, that's my
favorite. It really truly is.I can't eat enough of it. It's
the best like version out there.Yes, there's nothing like chocolate ice cream
(01:01:43):
with chocolate chunks. That's that's theway to go decades. Oh goodness,
well, you know what. Iam so excited to have you here in
Wheeling on June eighteenth. It's goingto be a wonderful show and for a
very wonderful friend of mine. Willyou please say hello to Wendy. Wendy,
(01:02:04):
if you're listening, I hope Iget a chance to meet you.
In fact, dam let's do this. Okay, let's work it out to
where you bring her backstage after theshow. We'll do a meet and greet
backstage. That's amazing that. Ohmy god, you're get in touch with
my people. Okay, shut thisinterview up and let's let's make it happen.
I'd love to say hi to You'reawesome, Thank you so much,
(01:02:25):
Thank you so very much again.Donnie Osmond performing here at the Capitol Theater
June eighteenth. You're listening to thebloem Daddy Experience with salmon OTAs here on

We had this yesterday where he didthe deal with the Vegan Impossible Foods
Yes Company for hot dogs. Henow can't participate in the Nathan's in Your

back. So that is Joey Chestnutversus his longtime rival Kobyashi and this will
(01:08:47):
take part in a hot dog eatingchallenge on Labor Day live on Netflix.
I thought Kobyashi retired because of healthissues from his competitive eating, don't.

it right on the head. Ohgosh, the pair have faced They have

and then their mom was like, this is so disgusting. No, no,
