Speaker 1 (00:01):
Indeed number one talk show in the Ohio Valley. This
is the Blue Daddy Experience. Your host, Bloom Daddy. His
goal inform, entertain and tick people off. The bloom Daddy
Experience on News Radio eleven SEVENTYVA starts now the.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Bloom Daddy Experience. It's seven oh six on News Radio
eleven seventy. Good Tuesday morning to you. I hope you're
enjoying your morning, and thank you so much for joining me.
I'll give you a little update because I've had a
lot of people hitting me up all over the place
via text, message, Facebook, Twitter, I mean, you name it.
The reason I wasn't on the show yesterday is because
my son Braylan got a baseball off the face on
(00:43):
Sunday at Prasco Park near Cincinnati. So just to kind
of give you an update. He plays baseball for Wright
State University. It was a fall ball doubleheader against the
University of Kentucky. Thousands of people there. It was just
an electric atmosphere. It was an incredible atmosphere. A big
fall festival going at Prasco Park, which if you've never
been there, this is a complex of two baseball fields
(01:07):
back to back. It's privately owned and it's gorgeous. The
field we played on is where they hold the Big
East Championships. It's a stadium basically. The other field behind
it is an all turf stadium baseball field that my
older two boys played on with West Liberty. We'd always
played Malone there to kind of open up the season,
(01:29):
usually thirty degrees snow on the ground. This time the
weather was absolutely gorgeous, packed house, they had a fall
festival there, thousands of people. You're playing the University of
Kentucky and even in a fallball game, over a thousand
people in the stadium, thirty plus scouts, radar guns all day.
It was just an unbelievable day weatherwise, everything. First game,
(01:54):
Braylan gets to start at second base and is having
a pretty good game. Comes up as third bat against
a lefty pitcher. Now, my son's a lefty lefty pitcher
for Kentucky. He's six ' five throwing ninety two ninety
three miles an hour. Fourth pitch of the bat, the
(02:15):
kid from Kentucky, let's loose of a fastball. I thought
it hit Braylan in the helmet. His reaction made me
think the sound of it sounded like it hit plastic,
hit the helmet. His reaction told me otherwise. And then
I thought, well, maybe it hit the bill and the
bill come down and cracked his nose. I mean, that's
(02:36):
just I just didn't think it hit him in the face.
Coaches covering out of the dugouts. They take him in
the dugout. Five minutes goes by. We don't hear anything,
we don't see anything, and I thought, Okay, maybe he's concussed.
Hit him on the helmet. They're keeping him out. Next
thing I know, I look to my left out of
the stands and there's four EMTs standing there with my
son and there's just blood everywhere. And you know, no
(03:00):
parent wants to go through that. It's a horrific site.
It's baseball. Things like that happen. Long story short. Taking
to the emergency room there for a very long time,
catch scans, all that sort of stuff. Multiple fractures of
the nose, a couple fractures of the sinus cavity, obviously
surgery on the horizon, and just kind of guy. I
(03:23):
kind of go from there. So I was supposed to,
I mean, not only do this show in the morning yesterday,
but I was supposed to be in Cleveland for Game
two of the American League Division Series against the Tigers.
I was going on air at ten am. Had to
call the bosses Sunday night tell them what happened, and
obviously everything had to be rearranged. And I'll tell you
(03:44):
what it's It was nice. You know, iHeart media. Good
or bad. You'll hear people say different things about it.
iHeart media. Has been very good to me throughout my career.
And I actually said, I said, look, I'm going to
take care of this here. I'll jump in a vehicle.
If I've got to leave Wright State University at seven
(04:05):
in the morning, I'll be there. And my boss simply said,
stay with your son. We'll get it covered. And when
you work for a place like that, it makes you
appreciate that you work with individuals who understand that, you know,
what family does come first, because in this business there's
a lot of demands. Sometimes you know, it's that constant
(04:28):
juggling of family, kids, profession, But in this situation not
the case. So it's a bummer. I mean, he's got
three weeks of fall ball left to go. He was
really establishing himself. I don't know where this is going
to put him, but that doesn't matter compared to what
(04:48):
could have happened because where it hit him in the face. Basically,
that ball hit him right between the eyes, and it
didn't hit him flush. He was starting to turn his
head when it hit him him. But he got six
stitches right on the bridge of his nose, almost kind
of inside of the eye socket. But the emergency room
doctor told us another quarter of an inch his eye socket,
(05:12):
his orbital socket is probably crushed, and then who knows,
could have been the end of his career and vision problems.
Who knows, So there's always I guess in most cases
a silver lining that would have been it. The other
part of this is if it was about an inch
over more, you're talking your temple and God knows. So
(05:36):
I've always look whenever I played baseball, whenever I watch baseball,
my kids play. My oldest one was a pitcher at
West Liberty. Every game I was nearly sick to my stomach,
not worried about winning or losing, just praying that he
never got a ball off the head after he threw it.
It was kind of weird, and it couple days before
(06:01):
this matchup, I was thinking about him against the lefty,
because he always scoots up in the box trying to
get ahold of the slider or the curve ball before
it breaks. And I thought, you know, against Kentucky, they're
going to have guys throwing ninety five ninety six if
he gets a lefty up high and tight. And guess what.
I was thinking about it, and it happened, and just
(06:25):
kind of surreal when you think about it. But this
kid was six ' five. I mean, by the time
he strides and lets loose of it, he's probably releasing
the baseball the mound sixty feet six inches. He's probably
releasing that ball from fifty four to fifty three feet
coming at ninety two ninety three miles an hour. Braylan
just didn't have a chance. He said, Dad, I had
to hang in there in case it was a slider.
(06:47):
Obviously it wasn't, and it about ripped his face off.
So saa otis, thanks for, you know, taking over for
me the entire show. Didn't mean to leave you hanging,
but sometimes well all the time, families got to come first.
And I know both you understand that, of course.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
We understand it. You know, it was when Blue Daddy.
When you reached out to me Sunday night and send
me the picture, it made me just stop and like
my eyes immediately started to water because it was just
like whoa, whoa, and the pain I can't even imagine. So, yes,
(07:31):
absolutely we stepped in. No problem there.
Speaker 4 (07:35):
Well, here here's the thing, and this is the big concern,
because you know, I was maybe a little bit of
average baseball player. I didn't play in high school because
for some stupid reason, I thought I was going to
run track, but it didn't happen. I mean, I did
it for five days and then when I said I
had to get up at five in the morning to
(07:56):
leave for Fairmont, I was like, here's my spike. See you.
So But anyway, you know, I played through my sophomore year,
and when I was in the seventh or eighth grade,
was playing. Like I said, I think I mentioned this
story yesterday, got hit by a fastball. Guy was throwing
eighty eight miles an hour as a as a thirteen
year old eighty two miles an hour. And you know,
(08:19):
I think I'm gonna out thinking. And this is what
Bloomber talked about his boy moves up in the box
against the left handed. You know, you're doing anything you
can to get the advantage. So you know, guy blows
two fastballs by me, and I think he's gonna throw
a curveball. Well know, he throws a high, high and inside.
Because we went to school together, my dad was his principal.
(08:39):
He admitted later on that he was throwing in my
head and he just thought I'd get out of the way,
and so it hits me in the temple in the helmet,
knocks me out, ended up chipping a few teeth. But
I was never the same in the batter's box again.
And and that's what I hope doesn't happen to Braylin,
because you you can be a little gunshy, and that's
(09:04):
just going to change how you play the game.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
Yeah, you get that natural flinch of of caution because.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
And you may not even be thinking about it, but
you're subconscious sure.
Speaker 3 (09:16):
Well and from a parent's perspective, you know what what
Bloomer had to experience on Sunday. You don't think scary, yeah,
anything around the head, the face, and you think about
the speed and the impact. Like like he said, the
doctor said, if it was a few millimeters to the
(09:37):
right of the left would have been the eye socket.
And then you know you're talking a lot of long
term possible injuries to deal with. So hopefully the the
upcoming surgery goes smooth and.
Speaker 4 (09:52):
Oh gosh, well he'll never be the same because it's
like once you break your nose, and you know, you
always have sinus issues and everything else, even if they
go in and clear it out. But I mean, those
are things that you can you can deal with.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
Yeah, three games left, he said in Fallball at three weeks.
Three weeks, I'm sorry, and then dealing with this, gosh,
but hopefully on the mend.
Speaker 4 (10:13):
And I just like the fact that he wanted to
go back in the game. Yeah, so that tells you
right there, he's a player.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
Is a player, He's tough, he's tough. Gosh almighty, well
they will he play the rest of the season. Probably not.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
I doubt it.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
I very very much doubt it. Seven sixteen, we returned.
We're going to jump into some local news, The bloom
Daddy Experience, Otis and Sam News Radio eleven seventy w
w v A. Tuesday Morning, The bloom Daddy Experienced Samon
(11:02):
Otis News Radio eleven seventy WWVA. So, as we mentioned yesterday,
going to keep mentioning all week long. We have chances
for you to win tickets to Donny Ours Ours there
I say it right this weekend here at the Capitol Saturday.
So stick with us later on the show, we'll be
doing some of those.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
Well and don't pay attention to our promo and well
and that, because we're gonna change it up. We're gonna
make you call in. Yes, the talkback, we're getting people
that are, but we're just not getting the same amount
of numbers that.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
And kind of repeats, you know, yeah, and.
Speaker 4 (11:37):
It's out of sight, out of mind. So if we
tell you to call, you know that we're giving them
away right then and there.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
So and do you know that number one hundred and
sixty two four eleven seventy There we have it. Let's
jump into some local news. So there is a lot
of work happening in different towns across the valley. I
think people they're trying to get some work done before
the really cold winter weather hits when everything's put on.
So in Wheeling, a new sewer line is being installed today,
(12:06):
so they wanted to let drivers know to expect delays
or not delays. I'm sorry. You will not have access
to the work zone until further notice. This is happening
between Chantel and Built Maher Avenues, so be prepared for
that again. A new sewer line is being installed between
Chantal and Built Maher Avenues. This will continue over the
next couple weeks, so be prepared. There will not be
(12:29):
any access for motorists in that area until further notice.
Wheeling is busy out of Marshall County. There's still no
word on what caused a deadly truck crash that happened
over the weekend. This happened around breakfast time on Saturday morning.
First responders found a water truck on its side along
(12:51):
Route two fifty. Officials closed off the highway for several
hours during the response. Police have not released the identity
of the victim as of yet or the cause. Out
of Saint Clairsville, more construction work, so residents in Saint
Clairsville might find themselves without water today. Officials plan to
(13:13):
conduct water line tie in work throughout the day. As
a result, folks on mar and South Sugar Streets will
likely experience low water pressure and even discoloration. Discolouration officials
will issue a forty eight hour boil order after the
work is finished. And if you've traveled through Saint Clair's Ville,
they have been working on waterlines throughout the entire summer,
(13:36):
doing different streets throughout the town. So this now is
affecting mar and South Sugar Streets. And then the first announcement,
first talk Christmas parade. We are there, ladies and gentlemen.
It is time to start start talking Christmas on holidays.
And I know Halloween isn't here yet. I know Thanksgiving
hasn't gotten here yet. But if you are interested in
(13:58):
being a part of the Wheeling I'm sorry, not Wheeling
Saint Clairsville Christmas Parade, they are now accepting applications. You
can take those to the Saint Clairsville Chamber of Commerce
office or get on their website. The parade is scheduled
to take place on December eighth, So maybe we should
be in the parade. Otis we should have a float? Okay,
(14:24):
the enthusiasm with that.
Speaker 4 (14:25):
Look was uh when you were talking about the construction
workout in the Wheeling area on chantal and built Moore.
Just so people know, that's right off of Washington Avenue.
That's where the ABC what they call them the ABC
streets because they're alphabetical. Oh, I didn't know that, I forget,
(14:48):
but I forget that built more Chantal. One of them's Fairfax.
I can't remember. All Love Evelyn, I think is one.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
So Mount of Chanel is that what it's.
Speaker 4 (14:55):
Well, that's part of it. But there's Mount de Chanel Road.
But this is Chantal Avenue, That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
But is it named after them?
Speaker 2 (15:02):
Out?
Speaker 3 (15:02):
Probably? And then state wide, West Virginia Secretary of State
Mac Warner is asking or calling on people to help
out with the general election. They are looking for poll workers.
There are eighteen counties that are still short of the
amount of poll workers needed. So anyone interested is at
(15:24):
being asked to visit go vote w v dot com.
So if you want to be a pollworker, now's your opportunity.
My grandmother was a pollworker in Ohio for years years
two down.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
In South Wheeling, they used to vote in a barbershop. Oh, sure,
she went. She went to a barbershop and worked the
polls at a barbershop.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
Yeah, shoot, my grandmother.
Speaker 4 (15:49):
Worked there there anymore, worked.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
Out of a garage work the polls. We shouldn't say
work the polls and our grandmothers in the same you
know it doesn't Well it's.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
Better and say work in the streets.
Speaker 3 (16:02):
Well, I don't know. And then here's some fun news,
mega millions. I'm not a big lottery ticket buyer, but
ticket prices are going to more than double to five
dollars starting in April of next year.
Speaker 4 (16:22):
Yeah, I think I think it's gonna hurt play. I mean,
I understand that what they're trying to do, they're they
want to they want big, quicker, they want bigger and
quicker jackpots. They want there They're so in other words,
like if you played five dollars and you hit, say
the power ball, you're going to get more than your
the megaball. You're gonna get more than five dollars back.
You can like double your.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
Money, right, no more break evens.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
Right, But at five dollars a clip. I mean when
I play even, like when it's up to you know,
eight hundred million, whatever it would be. You know, I
still only play like ten dollars. You know, I play
five five spots. So in this in this case, the
most I'm gonna play is.
Speaker 3 (16:59):
Too I was gonna say that, I'll take you down
to two.
Speaker 4 (17:01):
I mean, it's not going to change how much I play,
and I don't play it every day or every you know,
every opportunity. So I mean it's you know, and you
have people that play, you have people to play them.
Both in power Balls three days a week making millions
just two that's five that's five times a week. I
mean if you only play one, that's ten dollars a week.
Right there.
Speaker 3 (17:20):
The current odds of winning the jackpot are one in
three hundred and two point six million.
Speaker 4 (17:27):
It's supposedly to increase if you play if you buy
the five dollars. I don't know how they're going to
do that, but we'll see.
Speaker 3 (17:32):
Yeah, I don't know, five dollars that's a.
Speaker 4 (17:34):
Good unless he gets super big and I'm still only
playing ten bucks.
Speaker 3 (17:39):
Oh, speaking of games, I'm going to talk the prices.
Right we get back seven twenty eight, The bloom Daddy
Experience salmon Otis News Radio eleven seventy WWVA. Salmon Otis
News Radio eleven seventy w w VA. We've been talking
about the Capital Theater right here and Wheeling. We're sitting
in the building right now it's been busy, It's not
(18:01):
over yet. Coming up Thursday, October tenth, The Price is
Right Live returns and joining us now host Todd Newton.
Good morning, mister Newton.
Speaker 5 (18:11):
Well, good morning to you guys. Good to talk to you.
Speaker 3 (18:14):
This is going to be fun. I love game shows.
So first off, what can people expect when they come
to the show.
Speaker 5 (18:25):
Well, you know, The Price is Right Live stage show
was created twenty three years ago by Bob Barker because
he wanted to create a little bit of Hollywood to
take out across the country so that folks from coast
to coast could play their favorite game show without having
to pack up and come to Los Angeles, right, And
so for twenty three years we've been traveling the country
(18:47):
and giving away these fabulous prizes. And to answer your question, Camp,
everything that you love from The Price Is Right is
going to be right there on stage. All of the
games that you know and love, all of the prize
this is that you always wanted to win, the big
wheel that you've always wanted to spit, It's all going
to be there. And authenticity is number one for us.
(19:08):
I think we're all game show fans first, and game
show employee. Second, So we're excited.
Speaker 4 (19:15):
So when people come to the show and you have
they get called on stage, just like on TV and
everything else. Is the show set up to resemble the
TV show or is it just is it something totally different?
Speaker 6 (19:33):
No?
Speaker 5 (19:33):
No, all the set pieces that we use in the
Traveling Show were constructed by the same people that do
the set for the TV show. We're owned by the
same people that do the TV show, created by the
same people that do the TV show. So yeah, And
the beautiful part about getting called to come on down
is that all of our contestants are chosen completely at random,
(19:56):
So it doesn't matter where you're sitting in the theater,
it doesn't matter how much for your tickets. Everybody has
the same shot to come down to contestants row and
hopefully get up on stage. And that's the you know,
that's that's the magic. And because we're not limited to
one hour and there are no commercial breaks, we're able
to call more people down every show than than they
(20:16):
have the opportunity to do on TV.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
Well, that's what I was going to ask you. Do
you have any inside tricks to get that iconic call?
Speaker 5 (20:25):
No, it's it's all the it's all the luck of
the drum. But you know, the tips that I like
to give people is, next time you go to the
grocery store or Target or Walmart, is you know, make
a mental note of how much you're paying for things.
You have enough of the items that we ask you
to be on are meant to trick you or trip
you up in any way. We you know, we we
want to give these prizes away. That's the whole, that's
(20:46):
the whole magic of the price is right, you know,
we we love seeing people win. So we want you
to come as prepared as as you can possibly be.
And sometimes, you know, a nice homemade t shirt brings
people a little luck.
Speaker 4 (20:57):
So let me ask you this. If I win a
case a taco sauce when I bid on it, dud,
do I get it that night? Or do I get
a gifts or tape to get for the taco sauce.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
Sauce?
Speaker 5 (21:09):
The taco sauce will be shipped to you in a
later day.
Speaker 6 (21:13):
We don't We're not.
Speaker 5 (21:14):
We're not hauling truckloads of rais a roni or across
the count yet.
Speaker 4 (21:20):
How long have you been doing this?
Speaker 5 (21:23):
It's the very beginning twenty three years. Yeah, this uh
this show started off as a as a tiny little
casino show out in Reno, Nevada, and it was only
supposed to be a two week run, a two week run,
and mister Barker put me in that spot because he
wasn't a big fan of gambling and didn't care much
for casinos, so he said, well, put cot in there.
(21:44):
He knows these games, and and you know, I'm I'm
I'm grateful to the game show guys that we're here
twenty three years later.
Speaker 3 (21:52):
That that that's an amazing run. I mean, to travel
all across the country. What are what are some of
the best uh T shirt? You mentioned the T shirts
that you have seen traveling and doing this.
Speaker 5 (22:06):
Well, I you know, the shirts that say it would
make me holla to bid one dollar. That's always the
favorite of mine.
Speaker 6 (22:15):
You know.
Speaker 5 (22:15):
I like the bucket list t shirts. You know, when
people you know mentioned things they've always wanted to do,
see the Grand Canyon, you know, travel to travel to
France and spin the Big Wheel. It's just interesting how
that always seems to make the bucket list. But I
guess to answer your question, my favorite shirts are the
ones that you know, if somebody's celebrating a birthday, or
(22:38):
if somebody's you know, celebrating their fiftieth anniversary with us
and they've been watching the show since it came on
the air. It's really neat for me to stand on
the stage and look out and see generations of game
show fans because my grandmother introduced me to this show,
you know, so when somebody's in the crowd with with
their grandma, I know, it's I know, it's a special night.
(23:00):
And mister Barker always taught me to host this show
through the eyes of the contestant.
Speaker 6 (23:05):
You know.
Speaker 5 (23:05):
He would say, don't take for granted that you get
to play Plinko every single night. Keep in mind that
for the contestant, it's a once in a lifetime experience
that they've been wanting to do for many, many years.
And once I, you know, once I started hosting through
that with that perspective, it was almost like when you
have children, you know, Christmas is really exciting again and
(23:26):
birthdays are really fun again because you're seeing it through
their eyes. So that's how we play it, no matter
where we are every night, and how.
Speaker 4 (23:33):
Many how many nights a week do you take the
show on the road. How many nights a week are
you on day?
Speaker 5 (23:40):
Yeah, we're We do about one hundred and ten shows
a year. We tour in the spring and in the fall,
so we are. We're just a couple of weeks into
our fall tour right now. We're up in the Boston
area at the moment and get ready for a big
show tonight. We had a beautiful show last night in Portland, Maine,
a great little town by the water. So we all
(24:02):
got our got our clam chowder and our lobster rolls,
so we're well fed. But yeah, and now after all
these years, guys, it's it's really fun because we go
back to cities that we've been to before and we
see familiar faces in the audience, we know favorite restaurants
to go eat, and you know, it's I got to say,
we haven't been to your town since before COVID, so
(24:25):
we are long, long overdue to come see it again.
Speaker 3 (24:28):
We're talking to Todd Newton, host of Prices Right Live,
which is coming Thursday, October tenth, right here to the
Capital Theater. So besides, the price is right. Growing up,
what was your favorite game show?
Speaker 5 (24:41):
Well, I loved the reason I loved The Price Is
Right is it's so many different games at one you know,
you never know what game is coming out from behind
those doors. It could be Plinko or Cliffhangers or any number,
you know. So I always, I always liked that, and
I think that's one of the keys to the longevity
of The Price Is Right. But I was a big
(25:02):
Richard Dawson fan, you know, the Original Family View. Loved
Richard Dawson match game with Gene Rayburn. I mean, you know,
these these were the hosts that Bob you bank. These
were the hosts that really influenced me at a young
age to want to get into this area of television.
Johnny Carson at night. It was Bob Barker during the
(25:24):
day and Johnny at knight. For me, before I even
knew what the term hosts meant, I just knew that
these guys were entertaining millions of people by you know,
being a slightly exaggerated version of themselves. And uh that
was that played a big pivotal role in my choice
of careers.
Speaker 4 (25:44):
I think I think you and I could probably relate
because the reason we watched The Price Is Right as
teenagers was the Barker beauties. Let's just be honest.
Speaker 5 (25:51):
Oh yeah, yes, yes, Well Newton's Knockouts will be there.
Speaker 4 (25:57):
Oh I like it. I like it, Newton's Knockouts. That's
a great term you get, you get an A for
that one.
Speaker 3 (26:06):
Yeah, that's really good.
Speaker 5 (26:08):
That's so very sweet, very sweet girl, just to put
up with us on a tour bus. Very sweet whip.
Speaker 4 (26:14):
So you said everybody has a chance to be called
do do they fill out like a card when they
come in so that you have their names and you know,
anything like that, or you just call them by.
Speaker 5 (26:24):
Seat And we've made it very simple once you get
to the theater. There are QR codes all throughout the theater.
You know, everything's about QR codes now. We used to
do to fill out the cards, but it's so much,
so much easier now just to take a picture of
the QR code And once you do that, you're in
and we call four new people down to contestants row
(26:45):
after every game. So uh, that's that's a lot of
sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to hear
your name called, a lot of opportunities, and we give
prizes away in between games to pickle in the audience too.
I mean, it's it's a night of it's a night
of winning. This is this is what we set out
to do. This is what has kept us around, and
(27:05):
we want to make it as easy and as memorable
for people as as possible. You know, That's what The
Price Is Right is all about. It's all about memories.
We all remember staying homesick from school. We all know
how exciting it was when we'd hear that that that music,
play that, and you know that's that's what we plan
on delivering.
Speaker 3 (27:24):
Ye, well, it'll be a fun time. Thank you so
much for your time this morning again, happening Thursday, October tenth,
right here at the Capitol Theater, The Price is Right live,
mister Newton. What an iconic job you get to do.
Speaker 4 (27:37):
Yeah, you're living everybody's dream. I'm just going to tell
you that.
Speaker 5 (27:40):
Do you have a skinny microphone? Of course?
Speaker 6 (27:44):
Yes? Indeed, of course, yes, yes, yes we do.
Speaker 2 (27:47):
No.
Speaker 5 (27:47):
I'm a very fortunate man, and I'm grateful every night.
And I appreciate you guys letting us hop on here.
Speaker 4 (27:53):
Thanks so much, Thank you.
Speaker 5 (27:55):
I be good.
Speaker 4 (27:56):
Thanks. That'd be fun. I'd love it. Joh, that would
be so much fun.
Speaker 3 (28:01):
Newton's knockout.
Speaker 4 (28:01):
I like it.
Speaker 3 (28:02):
I was done. I was like, that's great.
Speaker 4 (28:04):
We should have just ended it right there.
Speaker 3 (28:07):
Oh the bloim Daddy experience. Otis and Sam News Radio
eleven seventy WWV.
Speaker 2 (28:18):
All right, let's talk a little bit of football right now.
I'm gonna start NFL and then I'm gonna go into
college and I'm gonna get Sam and Otis your comments
on each of these, But first of all, Pro Football
Steelers look really good. Even though they lost that game
in a last second on Monday Night Football to the Cowboys,
this is still a very, very solid team. And I
often sit back and wonder, how good would this Steelers
(28:40):
team be if they could just get an offense, if
they could just get a quarterback that consistently could score
twenty four to say, twenty eight points a game. Because
that defense is just so good, but it's always got
pressure on it because the offense is just kind of
stagnant at times, justin fields. He's adequate. I don't think
(29:00):
he's anything spectacular. I don't think he'll ever be anything spectacular,
but he is adequate. George Pickens, I think is the
best wide receiver in football. And I know Vikings fans
are going to say justin Jefferson's Jefferson. But Pickens to me,
is the real deal. It's just a shame they can't
find a quarterback that can get him the ball seven
(29:21):
to ten times a game because the guy is electric.
But the Steelers, to me, it's going to be the
Steelers and the Ravens obviously in the AFC North, and
we'll see where it goes from there. The Ravens have
the better offense, Steelers have the better defense. They're going
to fight it out to the end. The Browns are
an absolute disaster, and when you take a look at
(29:41):
the roster, they've got talent on that team. But I
talked to former Brown's interim head coach Greg Williams a
week ago and I said, Greg, you were in the
belly of the Browns beast. Tell me why this franchise
is so dysfunctional. Why can't it get out of its
own way? And he told me without directly saying it,
but you read between the lines. He's like, look, everybody's
(30:07):
got to be on the same page, and everybody's got
to be on the same page when it comes to
how you treat your players, And he said, what I
mean by that is, I don't care if it's your
best player or your worst player. If you got guys
who are dogging it in practice, if you have guys
who are not giving their all, if you don't get
in their face, if you don't hold playing time over
(30:29):
their heads, you're going to lose your team. And that's
exactly what's happened here. Kevin Stefanski is soft. The inmates
are running the asylum. Two weeks ago, Jerry Judy, the
newly acquired wide receiver, didn't play the last series because
he said he was tired. Greg Williams said, if he
was the coach, there would have been a fistfight on
the sidelines between him and Jerry Judy, and Jerry Judy
would have been in no team meetings the following week.
(30:53):
That's what this franchise sorely lacks. That Sean Watson deal
is not the worst deal in NFL history. It's the
worst deal in sports history. And I could see it
two years ago. This guy is never gonna be any
good never, and they've got to make a change. Stefanski's
saying he's sticking with them. That's not Stefanski saying that
(31:14):
that's Jimmy Haslam saying that the owner They're not gonna
pay two hundred thirty million dollars, give up six draft
picks and admit they made a horrendous mistake. I mean,
no coach in their right mind would stick with Deshaun Watson.
The fact that Stefanski is saying he's sticking with him
tells me he's not calling the shots that that is
coming up from above. So you've got the Steelers who
are headed in the right direction and the Browns who
(31:36):
are well being the Browns, and it's a shame because
they have a talented roster. Kevin Stefanski needs fired. I
don't care if he's a two time NFL Coach of
the Year. Hell I watch those games and I wonder
how this guy is a two time coach of the
Year because he makes some of the dumbest decisions I've
ever seen in this year's team, the penalties. It is
the worst coach team probably this side of the Carolina
(31:58):
Panthers in the NFL. And that's a toss up. So
I want you to to comment on that, but I
want you to start with Ohio State at Oregon two
against three, who's gonna win? And why otis? Since you're
the college football guy, you start first.
Speaker 4 (32:17):
Well, I you know, I'm not a huge a High
State fan, and I really don't know a whole lot
about Oregon, but I did do a little bit of research,
and you know, they have one common opponent, which is
Michigan State, and the Highest State beat Michigan State thirty
eight to seven, and Oregon beat them thirty one to ten,
pretty close, you know, as far as so if you
(32:39):
look at if you look at common opponents, which is one,
you know, I think, you know, it could be a toss.
There's a reason they're two and three. Okay, Now I
will say this, I think Oregon has had a little
tougher schedule so far going in because I mean the
High State's played two MAC team teams, They've played Marshall,
(33:03):
and they've played basically Cellar Well Akron, well that's a
that's a max school.
Speaker 3 (33:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (33:08):
So, but I mean Iowa and Michigan State are cellar
dwellers in the Big Ten. I mean, they're not going anywhere,
let's face it. Whereas you know Oregon, you know, they
they've played Boise State, which is ranked. They've played you
know U see LA, you know Oregon State a little bit.
I think a little better competition where I think a
(33:31):
high state has the advantages of the offensive line. Other
than that, I think it's a toss up.
Speaker 3 (33:35):
I think it's a toss up here. Here's the thing,
as in a high state fan, they cannot come come
out on that field because they're the visiting team. Stagnant.
What do I mean by that? They can't come back,
come out starting off that game on their heels jet lag. Yeah,
Ohio State tends to when they're up against a comparable opponent,
(33:58):
they're they're slow, and they cannot do that in this game.
Number one, they're the visitors and number two, this is
the first matchup between Oregon and Ohio State since Oregon
came to the Big Ten, So they have got to
step up and show they are the leaders of the
Big Ten.
Speaker 4 (34:16):
I think on paper, as far as the players are concerned,
I think it's pretty much a toss up. Okay, I
think Oregon has an advantage in the coaching.
Speaker 2 (34:25):
I don't. I don't.
Speaker 4 (34:26):
I don't think Ryan Day is a big I don't
think he's a big game coach. I mean, I mean,
can you know he he just seems to buckle. Yeah,
I mean I think Jim Harbass said it best. You know,
you can't. You can't be standing on third and tell,
you know, as a pinch runner and tell everybody you
got a triple. And that's basically how he's coached his career.
(34:47):
And besides that, I think Ryan Day's a bit of
a a hole. I mean, just in his press conference
and everything else. I mean, I mean, I don't like
his attitude. I don't like I mean, I think he's
kind of a jerk.
Speaker 3 (34:58):
Well, they can't. Sorry, they just again the High State Buckeyes.
They cannot let the momentum get away from them. They
can't come out flat footed, and they can't come out
with a slow start. We'll see though, it'll be an
interesting matchup. Finally, we're starting to get to the meat
and potatoes of the college football season. We're seeing the.
Speaker 4 (35:18):
Mass see the Big ten have a few extra people. Yeah, yeah,
some more competition.
Speaker 3 (35:22):
Right seven fifty eight, top of the hour, we get back,
gonna get into some baseball. The bloom Daddy.
Speaker 1 (35:27):
Experience see number one talk show in the Ohio Valley.
This is the bloom Daddy Experience. Your host, bloom Daddy.
His goal inform, entertain and tick people off. The bloom
Daddy Experience on news Radio eleven seventy. WWVA starts now.
Speaker 2 (35:49):
News Radio eleven seventy. It's the Blue Daddy Experience. Hey,
it's eight six, let's get this hour rolling. Good Tuesday
morning to you. I hope you're enjoying your morning, and
thank you so much for joining me. I'll give you
a little loft because I've had a lot of people
hitting me up all over the place via text, message, Facebook, Twitter,
I mean, you name it. The reason I wasn't on
the show yesterday is because my son Braylin got a
(36:11):
baseball off the face on Sunday at Prasco Park near Cincinnati.
So just to kind of give you an update. He
plays baseball for Wright State University. It was a fallball
doubleheader against the University of Kentucky. Thousands of people there.
It was just an electric atmosphere. It was an incredible atmosphere.
You had a big fall festival going at Prasco Park,
(36:32):
which if you've never been there, this is a complex
of two baseball fields back to back. It's privately owned
and it's gorgeous. The field we played on is where
they hold the Big East Championships. It's a stadium basically.
The other field behind it is an all turf stadium
(36:52):
baseball field that my older two boys played on with
West Liberty. We'd always played Malone there to kind of
open up the season, usually thirty to snow on the ground.
This time the weather was absolutely gorgeous, packed house, they
had a fall festival there, thousands of people. You're playing
the University of Kentucky and even in a fall ball game,
over a thousand people in the stadium, thirty plus scouts,
(37:15):
radar guns all day. It was. It was just an
unbelievable day weatherwise, everything. First game, Braylan gets to start
at second base and is having a pretty good game.
Comes up his third at bat against a lefty pitcher. Now,
my son's a lefty lefty pitcher for Kentucky. He's six
(37:36):
' five throwing ninety two to ninety three miles an hour.
Fourth pitch of the bat, the kid from Kentucky, let's
loose of the fastball. I thought it hit Braylin in
the helmet. His reaction made me think the sound of
it sounded like it hit plastic, hit the helmet. His
(37:58):
reaction told me otherwise. And then I thought, well, maybe
it hit the bill and the bill come down and
cracked his nose. I mean, that's just I just didn't
think it hit him in the face. Coaches covering out
of the dugouts. They take him in the dugout. Five
minutes goes by. We don't hear anything, we don't see anything,
and I thought, Okay, maybe he's concussed. Hit him on
the helmet. They're keeping him out. Next thing I know,
(38:20):
I look to my left out of the stands and
there's four EMTs standing there with my son and there's
just blood everywhere. And you know, no parent wants to
go through that. It's a horrific site. It's baseball. Things
like that happen. Long story short. Take him to the
emergency room there for a very long time, cat scans,
(38:41):
all that sort of stuff. Multiple fractures of the nose,
a couple fractures of the sinus cavity, obviously surgery on
the horizon, and just kind of guy. I kind of
go from there. So I was supposed to, I mean,
not only do this show in the morning yesterday, but
I was suppose to be in Cleveland for Game two
(39:02):
of the American League Division Series against the Tigers. I
was going on air at ten am. Had to call
the bosses Sunday night, tell them what happened, and obviously
everything had to be rearranged. And I'll tell you what
it was nice. You know, iHeart media. Good or bad.
You'll hear people say different things about it. iHeart media.
(39:23):
Has been very good to me throughout my career. And
I actually said, I said, look, I'm going to take
care of this here. I'll jump in a vehicle. If
I've got to leave Wright State University at seven in
the morning, I'll be there. And my boss simply said,
stay with your son. We'll get it covered. And when
you work for a place like that, it makes you
(39:45):
appreciate that you work with individuals who understand that, you know,
what family does come first, because in this business there's
a lot of demands. Sometimes, you know, it's that constant
juggling of family, kid, profession. But in this situation, not
the case. So it's a bummer. I mean, he's got
three weeks of fall ball left to go. He was
(40:08):
really establishing himself. I don't know where this is going
to put him. But that doesn't matter compared to what
could have happened because where it hit him in the face. Basically,
that ball hit him right between the eyes, and it
didn't hit him flush. He was starting to turn his
(40:28):
head when it hit him. But he got six stitches
right on the bridge of his nose, almost kind of
inside of the eye socket. But the emergency room doctor
told us another quarter of an inch his eye socket
is orbital socket is probably crushed, and then who knows,
could have been the end of his career and vision problems.
(40:52):
Who knows, So there's always I guess in most cases
a silver lining that would have been it. The other
part of this is if it was about an inch
over more, you're talking your temple and God knows. So
I've always look whenever I played baseball, whenever I watch baseball,
my kids play. My oldest one was a pitcher at
(41:13):
West Liberty. Every game I was nearly sick to my stomach,
not worried about winning or losing, just praying that he
never got a ball off the head after he threw it.
It was kind of weird, and a couple days before
this matchup, I was thinking about him against the lefty
(41:34):
because he always scoots up in the box trying to
get ahold of the slider or the curveball before it breaks.
And I thought, you know, against Kentucky, they're gonna have
guys throwing ninety five ninety six if he gets a
lefty up high and tight. And guess what. I was
thinking about it, and it happened, and just kind of
(41:56):
surreal when you think about it. But this kid was
six ' five. I mean, by the time he strides
and let's loose of it, he's probably releasing the baseball
the mound sixty feet six inches. He's probably releasing that
ball from fifty four to fifty three feet coming at
ninety two to ninety three miles an hour. Braylan just
didn't have a chance. He said, Dad, I had to
hang in there in case it was a slider. Obviously
(42:18):
it wasn't, and it about ripped his face off. So say, I, Otis,
thanks for you know, taking over for me the entire show.
Didn't mean to leave you hanging, but sometimes well all
the time, families got to come first. And I know
both you understand that.
Speaker 3 (42:38):
Hey, listen, an impact like this, I mean, an accident
like this Unfortunately, it does happen, and that's why you
know you have wonderful co workers like us that step
up to the plate. Oh and I think here's the
that was a terrible baseball analogy for that story. I
take that back.
Speaker 4 (42:55):
I think I think you know most employers, you know,
when you have kids, there are things that only happen
once in a lifetime. So you know, whether even if
it would have been his senior prom then you know,
the employer should understand. Look, you know, I'm going to
(43:16):
be here. I want to be there to see him
and his date off or whatever. Obviously this is a
lot more serious, and anytime there's an injury or an
accident or you know, having forbid a death in the family,
most employers are going to be sympathetic. And I say
most because it's not going to be all, but it's
(43:36):
going to be probably ninety five percent of them.
Speaker 3 (43:38):
A work life balance is hard for anybody, but when
you have an employer that's willing to work with you.
I mean this is going to sound completely trivial to
a lot of people, but there was a time where
one of my dogs was gravely ill, terrible, and the
boss here at the time recognize that, you know, that
(44:01):
was my child in a way, baby, yes, and said
you do what you need to do. Was completely flexible
and understanding. So even to that point when you have
that flexibility with your employers, not everybody's that lucky.
Speaker 4 (44:17):
Life. Life is more important than work, no matter what,
unless you're unless you're a er surgeon or you know
somebody that's saving a life right that the night's your job.
But you're also you're there because you're a specialist. Yeah, yeah,
but yeah, I mean for most people, life it takes.
Speaker 3 (44:35):
Precedent, life, family, all of that. Oh, we're gonna we're
gonna jump to uh, we're gonna do let's do our,
Let's do it, don't want Irish Gyway ours giveaway. Let's
do Caller number nine, Pairadonni Iris tickets for this Saturday
right here at the Capitol Caller number nine. One eight
hundred sixty two, four eleven seventy. That's it, one, eight
(44:57):
hundred sixty two, four eleven seventy, Caller nine, Donnie Ours r.
And then coming up, we are going to talk to
the one man volleyball team. Okay, that's it, the one
man volleyball team. We're gonna explain more when we get
back eight sixteen, The Bloom Daddy Experience, salmon Otis News
Radio eleven seventy WWVA A twenty one on your Tuesday morning.
(45:39):
Welcome back to the Blue Daddy Experience, salmon Otis News Radio,
eleven seventy WWVA. So before the break mention the One
Man Volleyball Team, we now have a full house here
in the studio. We're joined by Bob Holmes, the One
Man Volleyball Team, along with Jim I'm gonna say this right,
Ginakio Janaki are so close.
Speaker 7 (46:03):
You get a better than my mom.
Speaker 3 (46:05):
Former NBC sports broadcaster and Emmy Award winner. So good morning, gentlemen,
thank you for stopping by this morning.
Speaker 4 (46:11):
Great, thank you so much for having us.
Speaker 3 (46:12):
All Right, So off the bat, what is the One
Man Volleyball Team.
Speaker 7 (46:17):
Well, basically, Bob, what he does is he heads to
all schools all across the country. Kids today are struggling
because of social media, so they're causing They're doing things
like committing suicide, they're bullying, they're getting involved with alcohol
and drugs. Due to all that drugs coming across the
(46:38):
southern border. A lot of bad things are happening to
kids today because of social media. So Bob forty years ago,
over forty years ago, said he wanted to do something
to change the lives of those kids that are struggling,
especially now because of the social media. And so he
goes out to the schools. He plays one man against
six players, and he's done it for over twenty thousand games,
(47:00):
which is the most ever by any player in any
one sport. He's actually in Ripley's believe it or not, twice.
He's only lost about four hundred games. He's beaten the
Pittsburgh Steelers, the Miami Dolphins, the Baltimore Orioles. I mean,
the list goes on and on. He's beaten Penn State,
He's beaten Texas, A and M. And his message after
(47:21):
he shows them the impossible can be done of one
beating six, his message is so strong and it's about
taking their lives and changing them for the better. And
he's done it in every single town he goes to.
Speaker 3 (47:34):
Bob, was there one specific event that sparked your mission
behind this, that really made an impact that made you
say I want to make an impact.
Speaker 8 (47:44):
Absolutely. The biggest thing I would say is when I
found out that more teenagers ended up killing themselves in
one year than what died of all the wars, and
that really motivated me to want to get out there.
Now more kids are kept killing themselves than what died
of COVID in the whole world, So I have a
(48:05):
real passion to help them have hope.
Speaker 3 (48:08):
And your message is for young adults. And first off,
we want to let everybody know you are taking on
the Wheeling Fire Department and the Wheeling Police Department this
Thursday at Wheeling Park High School.
Speaker 8 (48:19):
That's correct, And there's free pizza or there's free food
as you're coming in and drinks, and you'll see me
take on the police and fire and they'll be there,
the nailers will be there, and everybody's welcome to come
at like a family event like you're going to the Globetrotters.
And my message that night will be for adults. It'll
be for everybody, and especially that part I'd want to
(48:41):
see people come out for. But you definitely will enjoy
watching me play the police and fire and we're having
a donation for them, and I'm going to actually say
that they ought to be paid more than somebody throwing
a ball through a hoop because they walk into fires
for us and bullets, and so we're going to have
a nice donation for them and fund them instead of
(49:03):
defund them.
Speaker 3 (49:05):
Very well said, and so we're.
Speaker 8 (49:07):
Real excited about that event. We want all of you
to come. Don't miss it because at the end I'm
going to take on the whole audience. I had a
thousand people out there before, and we want to submit
that to Guinnis for more people playing one guy than ever,
you know, one guy against a thousand or whatever. So
bring your family and friends well.
Speaker 3 (49:29):
And I love how you mentioned your message. It is
for the youth, but it is also for the adults
because we Otis and I have talked many times about,
you know, the impacts of social media on our youth
and how it has become a hidden window into the
world of our young people that adults tend to I
(49:50):
don't want to say forget about, but forget you know
that that's a connection that we have not faced before.
So you're tackling that with the conversation towards adults.
Speaker 8 (49:59):
Also absolutely, In fact, the adults are very passionate once
they hear it the message, and so you know, people
from five years old to ninety will go to a
globe trder game and there's no message. So certainly a
message that has saved so many lives. One boy was
going to hang himself with his computer cord on his birthday,
(50:22):
which was a week after my assembly, and he wrote
back and said the whole thing just changed his life
and he's decided to throw away the computer cord, which
made it worth everything. So I've had hundreds of emails
like that, thousands over the years where I was going
to end my life and now I'm not going to
or you know, vaping, bullying drugs, watching out for predators
(50:43):
on the internet. Parents, you've got to bring your family
to hear this because you'd be surprised how they're affecting
and destroying kids.
Speaker 3 (50:53):
Yeah, the message is needed by all generations, all ages. Now,
that's what I was going to ask you. You have
done this for over forty years. One of the most
impactful stories that you've received from a youth that heard
you speak. You just mentioned the computer court any others there.
Speaker 8 (51:09):
Oh, yes, when I was talking about and just recently
about how they'll ask for your picture, make pretending they're
playing you in a game when you're actually talking to
the kid is talking to a predator, and they ask
to send a picture. They send a picture, and then
they say, now we're going to post that all over
the internet unless you send us another picture, and then
(51:33):
they send that one, and then they ask for money.
And then three girls said they were going to kill
themselves because that had happened to them that very assembly
that night. They were going to actually end their life
and they decided not to. So I can tell you
it's very much real. It's affecting people everywhere, and especially the.
Speaker 2 (51:51):
Bullies and on the internet.
Speaker 8 (51:55):
And so I just beg you, everybody, come to a
fun thing where there's going to be a lot of
life after supporting the police, free food and a vital message.
Speaker 4 (52:05):
Sam.
Speaker 7 (52:05):
You know, it's really interesting, you know, in going to
these great events that Bob does. It's it's the it's
the obvious silence killer that's happening behind the scenes, and
nobody really realizes it. Right, The kids are getting caught
into these little traps of getting involved with these phone calls,
getting involved with these videos, getting involved on the internet.
The parents have no idea because the parents didn't grow
(52:27):
up in social media, so they don't understand it. They
can't teach us their kids. Their kids are finding out
about it and they don't know what to do. So
it's really become a huge problem. And that's where we're
trying to bring the Wheeling community together to help support
the kids from grade school all the way to high school.
So now everybody will be working together to make sure
that doesn't happen.
Speaker 3 (52:47):
And with fun tied in, there's a message, but it's
also entertaining.
Speaker 8 (52:52):
Exactly, And if you don't believe I play people by myself,
just go to beatbob dot com b e a t vob.
You'll see the vice going against me. You'll want to
come from. You'll have a much more desire to come
if you watch that video and beatbob dot com.
Speaker 3 (53:07):
Well, thank you guys. I will share everything on our
social media again. Happening this Thursday, Wheeling Park at Wheeling Park,
doors open at six. The bloom Daddy Experience. Sam and
Otis News Radio eleven seventy WWVA.
Speaker 2 (53:24):
All right, let's talk a little bit of football right now.
I'm going to start NFL and then I'm going to
go into college and I'm going to get Sam and
otis your comments on each of these, But first of all,
Pro Football Steelers look really good. Even though they lost
that game in a last second on Monday Night Football
to the Cowboys, this is still a very, very solid team.
And I often sit back and wonder, how good would
(53:45):
this Steelers team be if they could just get an offense,
if they could just get a quarterback that consistently could
score twenty four to say, twenty eight points a game.
Because that defense is just so good, but it's always
pressure on it because the offense is just kind of
stagnant at times. Justin fields. He's adequate. I don't think
(54:07):
he's anything spectacular. I don't think he'll ever be anything spectacular,
but he is adequate. George Pickens, I think is the
best wide receiver in football. And I know Vikings fans
are gonna say justin Jefferson's Jefferson, but Pickens to me
is the real deal. It's just a shame they can't
find a quarterback that can get him the ball seven
(54:28):
to ten times a game, because the guy is electric.
But the Steelers, to me, it's gonna be the Steelers
and the Ravens obviously in the AFC North, and we'll
see where it goes from there. The Ravens have the
better offense, Steelers have the better defense. They're gonna fight
it out to the end. The Browns, the Browns are
an absolute disaster, and when you take a look at
(54:49):
the roster, they've got talent on that team. But I
talked to former Brown's interim head coach Greg Williams a
week ago and I said, Greg, you were in the
belly of the Browns. B tell me why this franchise
is so dysfunctional. Why can't it get out of its
own way? And he told me without directly saying it,
(55:09):
but you read between the lines. He's like, look, everybody's
got to be on the same page, and everybody's got
to be on the same page when it comes to
how you treat your players. And he said, what I
mean by that is, I don't care if it's your
best player or your worst player. If you got guys
who are dogging it in practice, if you have guys
(55:30):
who are not giving their all, if you don't get
in their face, if you don't hold playing time over
their heads, you're going to lose your team. And that's
exactly what's happened here. Kevin Stefanski is soft. The inmates
are running the asylum. Two weeks ago, Jerry Judy, the
newly acquired wide receiver, didn't play the last series because
(55:50):
he said he was tired. Greg Williams said, if he
was the coach, there would have been a fistfight on
the sidelines between him and Jerry Judy, and Jerry Judy
would have been in no team meetings following week. That's
what this franchise sorely lacks. That Shaun Watson deal is
not the worst deal in NFL history. It's the worst
deal in sports history. And I could see it two
(56:13):
years ago. This guy is never going to be any
good never, and they've got to make a change. Stefanskis
saying he's sticking with them. That's not stefanskis saying that.
That's Jimmy Haslam saying that the owner they're not going
to pay two hundred thirty million dollars, give up six
draft picks and admit they made a horrendous mistake. I mean,
no coach in their right mind would stick with Deshaun Watson.
(56:34):
The fact that Stefanski is saying he's sticking with him
tells me he's not calling the shots that that is
coming up from above. So you've got the Steelers who
are headed in the right direction and the Browns who
are well being the Browns, and it's a shame because
they have a talented roster. Kevin Stefanski needs fired. I
don't care if he's a two time NFL Coach of
the Year. Hell I watch those games and I wonder
(56:57):
how this guy is a two time coach of the
Year because he makes some of the dumbest decisions I've
ever seen in this year's team, the penalties it is.
It is the worst coach team probably this side of
the Carolina Panthers in the NFL. And that's a toss up.
So I want you to to comment on that, but
I want you to start with Ohio State at Oregon
(57:20):
two against three. Who's gonna win? And why otis? Since
you're the college football guy, you start first.
Speaker 4 (57:28):
Well, I'm gonna take Oregon just because they're at home.
I think the home field advantage is going to have that.
I think these teams are very similar that there's a
reason why they're two and three. You know, I think
this is a highest states first real test. They haven't
they haven't played anybody. I mean Akron, Western Michigan, Marshall,
come on, I mean Michigan State, Iowa. Michigan State is
(57:50):
the one common opponent between the two. A highest state
one thirty eight to seven. Oregon wins thirty one ten.
You know close. You know, you don't know who got
a last second field. You know maybe if you know,
I don't know how it's played out, but you know,
very similar scores. I think A highest state has the
advantage on the offensive line. You know, Oregon hasn't a
(58:16):
good offensive line, but they have some transfers. They only
have one guy coming back a little questionable at center,
but they have the skill players where they don't. Even
though they're they're like in the top twenty in rushing
yards total rushing yards per game, they only average like
four point six yards to carry, which doesn't sound like
(58:36):
I mean, that sounds like it's a good number because
if you get three, if you run the ball three
times at four point six yards, it's a first down
every time. But you know, it's as far as you
know they should have. You know, it should be a
little higher than that. If if you look at how
they play the game, it actually should be a little higher,
but you know, we'll see what happens.
Speaker 3 (58:55):
We'll see what happens. And here's the thing that Oregon
might have kind of tucked a little bit back in
their in their memory and their psyche, which of course
is the twenty fifteen national championship. A highest state that
those kids, they am not the kids, the fans all
of that forty two twenty that may be lingering a
(59:16):
little bit of a bad type taste in their mouth
for the fans. But you know, it's arguable, you know,
it's a little arguable that a highest state has the
best wide recio receiver tandem and the best running back tandem.
Depends on you know who you're asking, but that that
is out there.
Speaker 4 (59:34):
Are they the best because their competition hasn't been that's stiff? Yes,
I mean, I mean, hell you and I could put
up numbers against Western Michigan and acron.
Speaker 3 (59:46):
Oh I don't know if I could do the one
one handed snag like Smith has been doing at wide receiver,
but yeah, it'll be interesting to see. I think it's
going to come down to on either side, momentum and
organ to going to go in with home field advantage
and Ohio state cannot let them start off hot with
(01:00:07):
the momentum, and High State cannot be slow. They cannot
be flat footed, they cannot be lasadaisical. They have got
to come out there with a mission.
Speaker 4 (01:00:20):
Well, Oregon, they've reratted off three straight wins against powerful opponents.
High State's beaten. The two cellar dwellers are the big ten,
you know. I mean they've beat Oregon's beaten Oregon State, UCLA,
and Michigan State all by at least twenty one points,
(01:00:41):
So you know, I mean as far as offense, I mean,
I think Oregon's just as electric as the highest state,
you know, And I think the highest states numbers are
a little bit skewed because of their opponents.
Speaker 3 (01:00:51):
Yeah, and that's what Ohio State has faced for decades.
The first half of their season is always light.
Speaker 4 (01:00:58):
Yeah, quit playing powder puffs.
Speaker 3 (01:01:01):
It comes down to the money.
Speaker 4 (01:01:02):
Those little teams, well I understand. I mean, listen to everybody.
You can play one. You can play one. You don't
have to play three. They played Marshall out of the
Sun Belt and two teams out of the MAC. I mean,
come on, put somebody on your schedule.
Speaker 3 (01:01:16):
But we're not the only ones that do it.
Speaker 4 (01:01:18):
I'm not saying you are right, but I mean three
three cherries, come on, yeah, I mean I can see one.
I can see because sometimes you might put that one
on your on your schedule, that that that looks good
and then all of a sudden they're having it down.
You're and you're you know, what are you gonna do?
There's nothing you can do about it, but you know,
at least at least play somebody halfway decent.
Speaker 3 (01:01:39):
Well, sometimes the games that you think, look at all.
Speaker 4 (01:01:42):
The other schools, I mean, they're playing you know, they're
playing bigger the first game of the season, second game
of the season, they're playing somebody from at least a
rival conference that's you know, decent.
Speaker 3 (01:01:53):
Well, I mean, and some of those teams that you
think are going to be gimmes, they can surprise you.
Look what happened to Alabama?
Speaker 4 (01:02:00):
Well that was that was they were beat Yeah, Vanderbilt
way big underdog, but a conference underdog.
Speaker 3 (01:02:06):
Oh they've beat him what is it thirty two times?
And get straight, So you know, you never know what's
going to happen.
Speaker 4 (01:02:12):
And bloem, Daddy's right, did Deshaun watching horrible?
Speaker 3 (01:02:15):
Don't get me?
Speaker 4 (01:02:17):
So it's one of the worst in sports history.
Speaker 3 (01:02:19):
He does not want to be there. He has no
leadership skills, he has no desire to win, he has
no interest in playing for that team whatsoever, and the
teammates around him have no desire to play for him.
If you want to know my feelings, Sunday, about five
minutes into the game, I was so mad and I
thought I Am not going to ruin my day. I
(01:02:41):
decided to do laundry and change the sheets on my bed.
Does that's how interesting?
Speaker 4 (01:02:46):
Does the team's attitude change if they get rid of
Deshaun Watson? Put it in the backup quarterback?
Speaker 3 (01:02:50):
Yes, yes, okay, because that's what a quarterback is is
a leader, and he is not a leader of men,
not even close.
Speaker 4 (01:02:59):
We got one more chance to win coming up, Ronnie,
the only Iris tickets for this weekend.
Speaker 3 (01:03:03):
That's coming up here a little bit later. Eight forty
five Bloom Daddy Experience samon Otis News Radio eleven seventy
w w v A, we are back. Eight fifty one
(01:03:33):
The bloom Daddy Experience salmon Oda's News Radio eleven seventy
w w VA. We got to talk.
Speaker 4 (01:03:41):
It's that time of day. We gotta go up to
Straw talk to our buddy, Kevin Trucks Cars.
Speaker 3 (01:03:46):
What are we talking about?
Speaker 4 (01:03:47):
Ken's going to talk about all of it?
Speaker 6 (01:03:49):
Well, I'm gonna give out a chance to You know,
he's been practicing his Ram boys. You know, he tried
to do his best. SAMUELI.
Speaker 4 (01:03:56):
I can't get that low.
Speaker 6 (01:03:58):
We're gonna give him another shot this morning. Okay, three
two one Ram, Okay, keep practicing.
Speaker 5 (01:04:05):
You'll get it.
Speaker 4 (01:04:06):
I'm never gonna get it. I can't get that low.
Speaker 6 (01:04:09):
I know. And you know what, he did a great
job of those commercials. I think Laney Wilson did the
best job personally. But I'm get a little bit of
Laney willsonfense. So you know, there you go. But hey,
Ram power days are here right now. All right, we
talked a little bit about it last week. How about
twenty twenty four Ram fifteen hundred crew tabs, twenty thousand dollars.
(01:04:31):
You can save up to twenty thousand dollars all right
on a RAM truck now right now. You can get
interest rates as low as zero point nine percent financing
for up to seventy two months. You got twenty twenty
four twenty five hundred and thirty five hundreds okay, three
quarter tons and one tons up to thirteen thousand dollars off.
(01:04:54):
I mean, guys, if you're in the market for a
truck Ram truck days are putting everything they have out
there right now to move as many of these trucks
as possible.
Speaker 4 (01:05:04):
I've said it before. With those savings, you can buy
a second car.
Speaker 6 (01:05:07):
You can't literally, I mean you can literally buy a
second vehicle. Okay, speaking of second vehicles, how about that
taking some of that money you're saving and applying it
to some jeeps. Okay, Jeep conference right now, you can
save up to seventy five hundred dollars. You can get
a payment on those as low as two thirty nine
a month Grand Cherokee Larado's three eighty nine a month.
(01:05:28):
Up to twelve thousand and five hundred dollars worth of savings,
all right, I mean, it's it's a great time. Two
great places to save money on those right there in
elm Grove at Elmgrove Dodge. Also, we've got big savings
at Straw across the Dodge Deep Ram Over in Glendale.
Speaker 4 (01:05:43):
Hey, I want to give you some homework. Since we
don't talk tomorrow. You're I know you're a music guy. Yeah,
I want you to check out a band. Okay, I
want you to check out Roger Klein in that c
l Yneer Klein and the Peacemakers, and I want you
(01:06:04):
to check him out and we'll we'll check on you
on Thursday.
Speaker 5 (01:06:07):
Okay, I'm gonna do it today, I promise, all right, buddy, have.
Speaker 4 (01:06:09):
A great day now. I just he's the music guy.
And if you know, he and I kind of have
like this. He's a little more country than I am,
but I think we still have we we kind of
respect the same music. So just one of those bands,
and that's a band I'm going to see next week
in Cleveland.
Speaker 3 (01:06:29):
A little referrals back and forth there.
Speaker 4 (01:06:30):
Yeah, I just check him out, you know.
Speaker 3 (01:06:32):
I mean, what's how you learn about you know?
Speaker 4 (01:06:37):
I was just telling you in one of the breaks
earlier that you know about him and you were and
how well Roger Klein was in the band called the Refreshments,
and the Refreshments actually did the theme song for the
King of the Hill show.
Speaker 3 (01:06:51):
Until you played it, I was like, oh, okay.
Speaker 4 (01:06:53):
They had a They had a mediocre hit in the
nineties called Bandidos. That's just a great and so I mean,
if you they're banned out of Arizona. They have kind
of like a Mexican text swing, you know, certain vibe
who yeah, I mean, and they actually they've actually it's
a rock and roll band, but they they he's gone
a little country at times. Well, and there's a couple
(01:07:15):
of great songs, Like he has a song, they have
a song, Jack versus Jose and it's about he walks
into a bar in Memphis and he orders tequila and
they don't want to giving tequila. They want to giving
Jack Daniels, and so it's a back and forth. And
then he has another one that's I can't think of
the name of it. I just go ahead, but he
talks about like basically he used to be a partier
(01:07:37):
and everything else, and then he says it's a it's
tell your Mama's what it's called. Tell your mama, you know,
don't quit my drinking. And but then you get to
the chorus, it's pretty good.
Speaker 3 (01:07:48):
Well, well, speaking of music, if you remember yesterday, one
of my things that I kind of went after a
little bit with the response to Helene was the fact
that there were not a lot of celebs, you know,
replicating what they've done in the past when it comes
to helping those during a natural disaster. Well, I take
that back, yep, because Luke Combe's, Eric Church, Billy Strings,
(01:08:11):
and James Taylor are set for the to do a
relief concert and it's going to be held October twenty
sixth at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Comb's in, Church and Taylor all grew up in North Carolina,
while Strings has a long history performing in the state.
(01:08:32):
It's going to be co hosted by ESPN's Marty Smith
and Barstool Sports Caleb Presley. Tickets go on sale Thursday,
October tenth, which is this Thursday, right, Yeah, this Thursday
at ten am. And it's called the Concert for Carolina.
So and there are still working on additional artists joining
the bill.
Speaker 4 (01:08:52):
So talking about other artists that have stepped up, I
don't know if you saw this or not, but Metallica
gave one hundred thousand dollars to hurricane relief. They gave
fifty thousand dollars to like the food bank, so that
there's food and water and it's and it's for the
people of North Caro and also the responders that are helping.
And then the other fifty thousand went to you know,
(01:09:15):
the area trying to get you know, trying to help
get them what they need as far as like clothes
and blankets and shelter and anything that they can help
that way. So I mean, Metallica has stepped up given
a hundred thousand dollars. Luke Combs, I mean the guy
that from iHeart Media that blim Daddy interviews Mark Mark
(01:09:36):
from He's from Ashville. He told us the story when
we were in Washington, d C. That this guy kept
leaving cassettes on the cars outside their station and wanting
to get airtime, you know, airplay on the country music side.
Speaker 3 (01:09:50):
I remember the story and they just.
Speaker 4 (01:09:52):
Kept throwing the cassettes away, throwing away, throwing. It was
Louke Comb's and he's like, boy, we dropped the ball
on that one. So Luke Holmes is from the Ashville areas.
So I mean, you know, it's good to see this.
I mean, it's gonna be in Charlotte, but you know
they're gonna raise the money and you know, if it's anything,
if it's like anything else, it's Yeah, they're gonna have
(01:10:12):
they're gonna have the donation where you can do this,
They're gonna probably do a fifty to fifty raffle.
Speaker 3 (01:10:16):
The momentum, the momentum is building, yes, for for the
fundraising and everything going on in those efforts, because you
got to keep in mind, these people are working in
the mud and the dirt, the smell, and who knows
what else, and they've got nothing to go. They're not
going home at night now a lot of them, their
homes are completely gone. So a little bit of comfort,
anything helps well to.
Speaker 4 (01:10:36):
Put on some sort of a benefit show like that
is is you know, it takes time, and it's you know,
they've gotten it together pretty quick.
Speaker 3 (01:10:42):
They have, they have, So that's good. Eight fifty eight
we got, we got, oh, we.
Speaker 4 (01:10:46):
Got last winter. Yeah, we got Iris tickets to give away.
Speaker 3 (01:10:50):
Collin number seven, one hundred sixty two, eleven seventy, Coller
number seven one eight hundred sixty two four eleven seventy. Hey, everybody,
have a good Tuesday. We'll catch it tomorrow.
