Speaker 1 (00:03):
This it's the Coach Brian Moore Show with Opah Lake.
I had football coach Brian Moore and now with Coach Moore,
the voice of the Bulldogs, Man Riggs.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
The kickoff of the twenty twenty four high school football
season is just weeks away. We're glad you're with us
alongside coach Brian Moore. I'm Van Riggs and Coach let's
jump right into it. I know here we are. Fall
camp is almost upon us and the season's right around
the corner. But let's go back to spring for just
a moment. I know it was a chance for you
to get in and really put in your system and
you got to play a spring game against a really
(00:41):
good clay chopball team. What did you learn from your
team coming out of that game?
Speaker 3 (00:44):
A whole bunch.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
I mean, you know about you know, our toughness and
obviously competitiveness and playing somebody else, and you know the
nicks and bruises that come with, you know, with the
game and even just a half of the football. You know,
so you learn who pushes through things and you know
who you can count on. Obviously, there's been a tremendous
amount of growth from that point to today, but really
pleased with our team.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
You know that night, what about our crowd, you know,
our community. It was really cool. It didn't like a
spring game. You know, it looked like you know, October
Friday night.
Speaker 4 (01:10):
So appreciate them coming. And you know, Clay's got a
great team. And actually they won the UAB seven on
seven later in the summer, and so you know, we
really didn't know who we played, but obviously a really
good team.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
And I thought there was.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
A lot of good football, but still a ton of
things to fix and we're still working through that even today.
But I think it allowed us to see where we
are a great measure and stick for our team so.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Much you can do now in the summer leading into
the start of fall football practice. In fall camp, you've
had a chance to participating a lot of seven on
sevens and eleven on eleven, which is kind of new
to me.
Speaker 5 (01:41):
Yeah, talk a little bit about that.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
So basically, we took the month of June and played
three college seven on sevens. We went to Auburn, Troy,
and UAB. We didn't start competing great in Auburn. We
played some really good teams. They had, you know, Lee
County Georgia and Valdosta and some of these big schools
and Thompson and everybody around our state as well. And
I didn't think we were right there. But as the
summer progressed, we got better. We had to strip some
things away, some entitlement and things that.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
You know, young people. I mean, we got such nice facilities.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
We had to kind of get back to who we
are and tradition and uh, you know sort of where
I started here with coach and you know, learning from
coach McCracken. And so we kind of got that point across,
went through the fourth, took a week off, and then
from the fourth on was really all by eleven eleven.
We did have one seven on seven, but you know,
basically we play a full game. You know, we don't
tackle to the ground. We you know, quit whistle and
(02:28):
there aren't pads. You can just wear helmets. But as
far as being able to go through the logistics of
kind of how the sideline operation works, you know, running
guys on and off the field, the process, the headsets,
the communication from the coaches, like cause we're still all
learning too van I mean we you know, actually we
started with all three of our coordinators, offense, defense, special
teams up in the box. Well they're all down now,
(02:50):
you know, in calmplacement sideline. We just felt like there
were things that we needed to be doing from a
you know, a player mentality and what goes on under
the tent as we're watching the film, you know, from.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
The from the previous series or whatever.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
And so we learned a lot about our team in
that way, and so and again about our staff as well.
So with all of us being new, I thought it
was a great way through the summer to kind of,
you know, compete, but also learn how to function, you know,
through a ballgame. And we even went to Oxford last
week and didn't play great. We won the game, but
we didn't play great, but we just watched it as
a staff. Actually this morning had a big staff meeting
(03:21):
and went through the whole thing. And so it gave
us a lot of learning tools to prepare us because
we're like twenty something days away from kick and so
every moment to be able to compete with an opponent.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Is huge for our team and huge for our progress
as approgram.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
A lot of eyes will be on the offense, I know,
coming into this season, you've got a quarterback that's going
to be new this year, at least to the system
and to the school.
Speaker 5 (03:42):
Really is starting as a varsity level.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Talk about the offense a little bit and what you've
learned throughout the summer.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
Yeah, we're you know, offense is so slow to progress.
Like you look at teams that start off the year,
even in the fall, and they're not great, and then
as the season goes on, they find themselves and their identity.
Your defense is typically ahead of your offense. I think
if you're not, and our Zia is for sure, then
you're not very good.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
You know.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
If your offense is is you know, wearing them out
every day, you're probably not be very good on defense,
you know. And so we've learned a lot. We have
learned about our quarterbacks. You know, Kobe Key and c J.
Sank you're still competing for that job. And so we
saw both in the spring. You know, they alternated series
in the spring, and I thought both can perform within
the offense and we'll protect them. You know, we need
to be able to run the football well and you know,
(04:25):
play better up front. And we've got a great fullback
in Blake Johnson and a lot of depth there and
being able to change personnel and be multiple and and
be able to you know, throw the ball, but maybe
throw horizontally, you know, throw some bubbles and throw.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Some RPOs and stuff.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
We will push the ball down the field, but we're
going to protect those guys early and and you know,
for us to do that, our defense needs to play
a high level. We need to win the kicking game
and then ease our quarterback through the season.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
Yeah, you moved the ball really good in the spring game.
There was some drives where you moved the ball really
good but just didn't finish. I know you went back
and watched the you know those situations too.
Speaker 4 (04:57):
What's the story of who we are right now? It's
a lot of lead good footballs, but super peaks and valleys.
You know, we played good football, but then we'll drop
away off and not play well. You know, I don't know,
Like in that game, for example, we drove I think
it was like nine plays. The first drive we go down,
we have an all sides penalty, and then we like
illegal motion or something, and then we had to kick
fuo go right. And then second drive we go three
(05:18):
and out after the defense had just given us a
ball at the plus forty. We can't do that, you know,
And we've got to be consistent, and really we should
have pushed that game out against Clay, But again, that's
an indicator of who we are.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
But we're working every day.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
But it's got to be like our overall makeup as
people to be consistent.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
You know.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
It can't just be well, I'm going to show up
on you know, practice days and be no, I've got
to live that way. I got to be that way
in school, you know, academically, and you know how my
car looks and my make my bed and clean my
closet and all these little things. We just have to
be dis one people because disc one people are consistent people,
and that's what we have to become.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
And we're just not there yet. But every day we're
working a little bit closer.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
And you know, our guest today, Will is a big
part of that too, in our strength program and how
we operate in there too. So we're getting there. It's
just we need to hurry up because season's just just
around the corner.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
All right.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
We'll be quick on defense. Defense is really good. I
know you've got a great group of guys. Last season
they were great at times, but then leaden ball games,
you know, they wore down.
Speaker 4 (06:12):
Yeah, that's personnel. I mean, that's a substitution management. You know,
they didn't feel like they were very deep last year.
Most of our defensive staff's returns with coach Massy and
so talking a lot with them and going through you know,
how do we rotate guys and play especially d Lineman,
you know, because you want to play Malik and Amari
and those guys all the time and Lightfoot, but that's
(06:32):
not you know, it's probably not best. We want to
play those guys about forty snaps instead of sixty, and
so to keep those reps down.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
You know, obviously it's three and outs, but it's also
just rotating pieces.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
So I think we can be better there and that
way we finished game strong.
Speaker 5 (06:45):
All right. Talk about the fall schedule, I know fall
campus here.
Speaker 4 (06:48):
Yeah, so you know, obviously going to alex City first,
huge rivalry. You know, we start with two non region games,
you know, Ben Russell and then Callaway, which is a
lot of fun. And then we get into region play
with a big region eighteen region. You know, we're play
you know, seven region games throughout the year, and then
we'll finish.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
You know, Pike Road will be in the middle.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
But you know, the region is very similar to what
people have known, you know, combining the Calver School and
you know the size of that school kind of scares you.
And you know, adding Lanier and they've got a great
coach and so we got to work cut out for
us in fall.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
But it's just one at a time, you know.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
Right now, it's about getting to Fall camp, you know,
getting into Ben Russell week and taking these fourteen days
of prep and being great and just seeing what, you know,
what happens from there.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
I know we'll talk more about that upcoming matchup against
benjam and Russell in the coming episode, but talk about
Quarterback Club.
Speaker 5 (07:34):
I know, we've got that launch now.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
We've got a dinner coming up in a few weeks
and we need everybody to get involved.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Yeah. So we got forty members at the moment, and
which is awesome.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
I like to set number get to one hundred, you know,
And basically what that group is there for. It's a
newly foreign quarterback club. I can't remember it ever happening
in Opalaca when I was here before it was an
all sports booster club and so each sport has its
own club. Now it's basically a resource for our kids
to help us raise money, support the kids, do whatever.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
But it also gives inside access to the program.
Speaker 4 (08:01):
So if people want to, you know, get involved in that,
we have a kickoff dinner August fifteenth that only Quarterback
Club members can come.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
It's free to them as long as they're members.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
They get to come, have a steak dinner, hear from
some of our kids and coaches, and get inside access
to the program nobody else gets. And so I think
again the primary focus is to support our kids, but
it also gives those people in our community, whether their
parents or ex players. You know, we got a lot
of those in their ex coaches you know, that are
now in the Quarterback Club and you you know, and
a lot of our personnel, our support guys. But it's
(08:30):
a great opportunity to get involved with our kids and
just give back and serve our community, all right.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
And I know there's information up on the website, and
there's also information shared on social media for folks and
how to join.
Speaker 4 (08:40):
Yeah, open like a football dot Com has it up there.
Click a link and you can join there. Again, any
of our socials you know, you can go to any
of those platforms Instagram, you know, Facebook, Twitter, all that
and you.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
Can find that information. And we'd love people to get
involved and help our program.
Speaker 5 (08:54):
All right.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
The show continues next with new strength and conditioning coach
here at open like a high school, Cade McGee. We've
got that for you coming up next back here on
(09:22):
the Brian Moore Show. And now we're alongside new strength
and Conditioning coach at Opelaca High School.
Speaker 5 (09:26):
We've got Caid McGee.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
With us, and Caid appreciate you being with us. Talk
a little bit about who you are, where you came from,
and a little bit.
Speaker 5 (09:33):
About your family. Yeah, I appreciate you having me Van.
Speaker 6 (09:36):
I'm from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, originally from a small town right
outside of Tuscalosa called Brent, Alabama.
Speaker 3 (09:42):
But married to.
Speaker 6 (09:44):
My beautiful wife, Savannah for six years and we have
a little son named Kipton, who just turned to last week.
But we're excited to be here in Opelaika and looking
forward to meeting everybody.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
All right, tell us a little bit about what drew
you to this job, What drew you to Opelika.
Speaker 6 (09:58):
You know, it's funny before coming to Opelaca. I really
knew nothing about the city or the town, coming from
the west side of the state, didn't know much about
the East side. And I came down to interview just
interested in the job and see what they had to offer.
And from the interview on, I was hooked. I knew
it was the place for me. Just talking with the
administration and Miss Fisher and mister Williams and just hearing
(10:22):
their vision for this job and this position and what
they're trying to build here at Opelika just really drew
me in. And just this community and the support it
does for athletics really seemed like a dream job that
I couldn't turn down, So I had to take it.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
I know it's a position they've been trying to get
for a while now Coach More was able to get it.
What did you see when you first came in that
you thought was the biggest step to getting the strength
conditioning program going in the right direction.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
The biggest step to get it going in the right direction,
I think.
Speaker 6 (10:51):
Just getting full support from the sport coaches, which they've
been great so far this summer. Just getting them bought
into the idea of training year round and getting their
athletes here and so far this summer has been great.
We've had female athletes, our volleyball players, girls basketball, softball,
some soccer girls, and just a lot of kids balled
into training the summer and getting them here is the
(11:13):
first step, you know, getting them here, training hard and
just kind of getting to know me, be getting to
know them. But having that support from the sport coaches
is critical.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Yeah, and this is not just a football only job.
We need to stress that this is for all sports.
And how do you juggle that schedule with all the
different sports.
Speaker 6 (11:29):
It's got to be difficult, it is, but that that
comes down to communication, just having to communicate with the
sport coaches figuring out when they're going to have their kids.
Speaker 5 (11:37):
Come in and train.
Speaker 6 (11:38):
And we're working on that right now, just as we're
getting ready to go into the school year.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
But the goal.
Speaker 6 (11:44):
Is is to have them in there two to three
times a week year round. So we want training to
be it's a year round developmental program for kids and
so just communicating with them figuring out times and days
to come in it works out best.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
Do you have a roll on game days? Will you
be along with the teams and there on the sidelines
and that sort of thing.
Speaker 6 (12:03):
Or I know, coach Moore definitely wants to me there
on Friday nights, which I love that. I mean, my
job on Friday nights is, I'm just I'm trying to
keep the guys hydrated. If guys are cramping up, which
hopefully hopefully they're not, you know, trying to work that out.
I'll work stretching before the games and just trying to
help the kids out anyway I can on the sideline.
But my work is pretty much done by the time
(12:25):
we get to Friday night. You know, my work Monday
through Thursday and all off season and training them and
once we get to Friday night, I'm just I'm their
biggest cheerleader man, and I'm there for him and just
helping them feel right and get their body right as.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
Best as possible.
Speaker 5 (12:37):
Got to be exciting to see the work come to
come into play on Friday nights. I'm sure it's definitely.
Speaker 6 (12:41):
Yeah, a lot of fun.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
Well, Kay, we appreciate you joining us. Thanks so much
for the time. Yeah, thanks man, Kay McGee. That's a
new strength and conditioning coach at open like a high school.
Stay tuned another Brian Moore show coming up on the Way,
we'll be previewing the first week opponent in Benjamin Russell
on our next episode right here on the Brian Moore
Show
Speaker 1 (13:01):
Step
