Speaker 1 (00:03):
This it's the Coach Brian Moore Show with Opahlac. I
had football coach Brian Moore and now with Coach Moore,
the voice of the Bulldogs man Rix.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Dollars four and one heading into a non region game
against Pike Row this Friday night alongside coach Brian Moore.
I'm Van Ridge coach. Happy homecoming. That's always good when
the kids can get in the game. A lot of
a lot of kids got to play. And of course
good homecoming week and a good Friday night of football.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Yeah, I thought so. I thought we played our best
and which was exciting, especially with all the things around
you you know, around the game. And but incredible night
in Bulldog Stadium, A beautiful night and uh, you know,
proud of proud of all the kids and you know
everybody involved, you know, the band and cheer and everybody.
I mean, it was a it was a great night
and a full, you know, big crowd. I thought it

(00:56):
was Smith Bought brought a pretty big crowd, so that
was exciting to see as well. But again, I did
think we played well. You know, we had the one
issue going in the red zone. You know that we
wish we had back and but I thought for the
most part, we really played well defensively, gave up some
rushing yards that we didn't want to, you know, early
we only had one three and out in the game,
which is a little bit disappointing out of eight drives.

(01:17):
So they made some first downs, which but against a
team like that, that's hard, you know, to simulate now,
and I'm thankful that we've seen that type of scheme.
It was really hard to prepare for. And uh, you know,
they kind of ran the clock and and and did
a good job with that. But I was pleased with
with something. You know, obviously the big turnover at the
beginning of the game with Kievian a great interception there,
getting the milllefield and closing that off. But I thought

(01:39):
we were really balanced offensively, and uh, you know, I
thought Kolbe had a big night. CJ came in and
played well. And one thing I wanted to brag on
CJ about the touchdown for Calvin. That was a great
run down there where we pushed the pile and all
that stuff. CJ was the first man in, you know,
blocking for down the field, and so proud of him.
And I thought we played a lot better up front offensively,

(02:01):
and so again, just just excited to see us continue
to get a little more consistent and because that'll be
the key going forward.

Speaker 4 (02:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
You mentioned your defense getting an interception on the first play, Yeah,
and then your offense answered with the score. But the
way your defense has been able to continuously get turnovers
is encouraging because I know you'll need those down the stretch.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
Yeah, takeaways are huge, you know, and you know, coach
McCracken always talked about the turnover battle, and I think
every coach does that, and we've taken care of the
ball for the most part. You know, We've had a
turnover I think one in each of the last three games,
which is disappointing, but we're not turned over multiple times
in a game. We'd like that number to be zero, obviously,
but we're still by average less than a turnover per game,
and we're over two takeaways per game. So that's an

(02:41):
encouraging number. You know that you can go back and
look at that and some other things conversion opportunities. We
got to continue to work on that third and fourth
down both sides of the ball. I thought they were
six or thirteen on third down, which is not quite
good enough. They were forty six percent or so, right
over where we want to be. But we only had
one third down offensively, which I don't know if I've
ever seen a game like that, So which is a

(03:02):
good thing because again we made some explosives, but I
really liked our balance. I like the way that we
moved the ball around to different people. Like I mentioned earlier,
it was good to see Jalen and Jamari get going
and use their speed on the perimeters. Good to see
Brody Brody looked at full speed. Brody's been a little
nicked up at just like Bennett has. But we should
be full go going into this Friday, so that'll be exciting.

(03:24):
And that's what we've really worked hard on is how
do we get those guys you know, to the show,
to this back five that we know are going to
be really tough and hopefully have them really.

Speaker 4 (03:34):
Healthy starts this week with a good Pike Road team.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
We mentioned this, I believe it is going to be
the first seven eighteam to ever play a game in
their stadium at home. When this stadium was built, they
were a three, a skill they've grown tremendously now to say,
with a state championship under their bill.

Speaker 4 (03:47):
They're gonna be really excited, gonna be a big crowd
in Pike Road.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
Yeah, it'll be a challenge as far as seating. You know,
I want our people to understand that. And I know
that Pike Road with the administration and level of coaches
that they have, you know, they'll they'll they'll get that
that they'll have an idea of what they want to
do going forward. I'm sure there's a big stadium in
the future, but got a great field, you know, really
nice turf field, and it'll be an electric night. You know,

(04:12):
They've got all the light show and everything that we have.
And uh, but the seating is limited, so people need
to understand that. And uh, you know, I wouldn't be
you know, above taking a chair because there's some there's
some green space down the down the sideline, truly, you know,
and and uh, but it'll be a lot of fun.
They're a really good team. They've played we're the we're
the first seven A to go there. But they've played

(04:32):
prattwell and Enterprise and so it's far as speed of
the game, and they won't be overwhelmed, you know there.
They obviously have a vision for where they want to
be as a program, and coach Shuk's done a good
job of sort of preparing them as they continue their
growth within their own school, much like Opalaika, you know,
to possibly in the future B seven A and uh.
So they're they're continuing to grow. They're extremely well coached.

(04:53):
They've got some quality players, starting with their quarterback who's
a sophomore, who is a dude. He a great touch
on the faith throws system wise, offensively, look a lot
like us, a lot of the you know, maybe a
little bit more rpo game than we are, but gonna
do some really good things. Coach Chandler does a tremendous job. Obviously,

(05:13):
I know him really well, and you see a lot
of us in their schemes. So it'll be a challenge
for us, totally different than the bookend Smith's and Dothan,
you know, because you're back to twenty personnel more, you know,
throwing the ball around and hitting those RPOs, whereas last
week was all run and next week will be heavy run.
So it's kind of refreshing, honestly to go back because

(05:35):
it makes it easier as the scout team guy, which
is what I do to kind of prepare for that
because it is so similar to what we do. But
it'll be a fun night and hope everybod will come out.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
And against a team like this, I know they always
have speed, well well rounded ball team and special teams
will be key again in the game like this.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
No question. You know in the n obviously that they
work it, and you know that's one of the things
as you flip on I've been in a long time
now and you start to look at certain things. That
special team piece, you know, is so crucial and easy
to see who really spends that time, and it's obvious
that they do that and very multiple especially with their
punt punt system, like almost every game is different. The

(06:13):
structure of their punt team which is unique, so making
sure you cover eligibles and you know they've got fakes
in there and that sort of thing, and so they
do a lot, man and again they pour into it,
and then they've got the people to do it. They've
got good specialists, they've got great returners, they've got really
good athletes, and at one point the quarterback was the punter,
which is always super scary because of all the things

(06:35):
he can do with his arm and so as far
as a fake scenario, but they do a good job
with that. And but we've been really good there. You know,
last week a lot of the show was about coach
Ferguson and his team. His groups been really really pleased
with him and the job he's doing, and I think
we continue to grow and get better and better. Smith
had the big return down their sideline the first kick

(06:55):
of the game. We cleaned that up and fixed it.
I thought that was that was awesome and really huge
for us to be able to clean that up and
fix it. I know that sounds odd to say, you know,
giving up a kick return is a good thing, but
sometimes you can really you know, kind of coach through
those things and make sure that you know, you clean
it up in game, and that's what we did. We

(07:17):
started moving pieces in that sort of deal. So encourage
our special teams. Eager to see us go out and
win another phase this week against Pike Growth and.

Speaker 2 (07:25):
Their coach Granger Shook, a guy that knows how to
coach football, played a college football and has been around
the area for a long time.

Speaker 4 (07:31):
Very familiar with opalc as.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
Well, no doubt, I mean being you know, he played
at Huntington, and you know, Grangeer and I have known
each other for a long time and he's a heck
of a coach and a guy where I don't know
we're the same age, but we're close and kind of
moving up through this deal in the same sort of pace.
You know, He's he's done a heck of a job
there and everywhere he's been. He was at Colquitt with
coach props for I know two years because they went

(07:54):
thirty to oh and it's two years at Colquitt and
he's done. And last year they were semi final team
at Pike Road. So he's done a good job. And
again bringing coach Chandler in I think was a massive
deal for him, a huge hire and just because I
think the world of Jonathan and his family. So you know,
I think Granger's done a great job and his teams
are super prepared, tough, take on his personality, play really

(08:17):
hard and play the game the right way.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
Get a preview first ten first Baptist Church OPA line
and coming up on Thursday, your weekly lunch coach ten dollars.
I know you have some special guests coming in this Thursday.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
Yes, so we got the back end. So we're gonna
take our safeties this week Kievan and Leland and Tyrese
and Vin Swink. They've done a great job. You know,
those guys are all on all kinds of special teams.
Coach Jamail Smith will come with them, as will Tyler Dawkins,
who's our co defensive coordinator. Just really excited to have
those kids get up and speak. Our d line did

(08:48):
a great job last week. Coach Hiawell headline that. And
then our middle school was there, and that is one
change too to mention. You know, the middle school actually
plays on Tuesday under the show will air after that,
but because of the possibility of weather issues, we move
that game up and so just really pleased with our
middle school. Ninth grade. It plays again at Smiths JV
plays Central, So we're in the heart of it. I

(09:10):
mean we're playing four or five games a week right now.
But just really proud of Again, like I mentioned early
in the show, the development, okay, of our guys is
just you can see it because of the game reps.
There is no substitute for game reps, and it's a
long Monday, you know, when you go morning practice, afternoon
run through. Okay, evening JV games slash night. I mean,

(09:32):
there's a lot going on. These kids are at football
or school for twelve to fourteen hours on a Monday,
but it's that's how you get them better and so
so yeah, I'm eager to continue to play those lower
level games and excited to see those guys at the
show and to see those coaches too, because they do
such a tremendous job. But we appreciate First Baptists and
those guys allowing us to opportunity to do that.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
There all right, three sixteen Center Thursday starts at noon,
runs till one. Coach, we'll get you in and out
and you'll have a great meal and a good preview
of Pike Roade.

Speaker 4 (09:59):
You'll get to hear some of the players as well.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
Coach, appreciate the business always we can to come back
on the Brian Moore Show. We've got Jared Fleming, who's
the offensive line coach at opal like as we continue
here on the Brian Moore Show. Welcome back here on
the Brian Moore Show, being rached on alongside offensive line
coach Jared Fleming and coach appreciate you visit us, talk
about the big boys up front that's been paving the

(10:22):
way for this run game all season.

Speaker 5 (10:23):
Well, I'm glad to be here. You know, it's kind
of long overdue having me in here. Honestly, it's about
it's about timing you. You you called me, you know,
sets up the business, that's right. So well, I guess
that's kind of says you. We're staying with coach more
right now. But it's going really well. You know, we
have a fun group to coach. We got probably the
most size that I've seen at this position and quite
some time. Uh you know, I think about like twenty

(10:46):
SEVENTEENMS offensive line had some really big boys there. I
think this is kind of one of the biggest ones
been sized. And we're pretty talented as well. We got
about eight guys who I'm very comfortable playing in the game.
Eight guys who are playing significant snaps. And that's a
luxury to have at this the Winnie offensive line coach
can tell you for sure.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Now, folks that don't know much about you, you tell a
little bit about you. I know you were a stud
yourself on the offensive line back in the day.

Speaker 4 (11:07):
Right, I wouldn't say I was a stud. I was.

Speaker 5 (11:10):
I tried to try my best. I was a tryhard
I had. I was a guy who had to overcome
some you know. I I'm you know, I'm tall, and
I was bigger, but I wasn't always the biggest, so
I had to you know, had to play pretty hard.
That was kind of my my my uh, my calling
card was trying to play as hard as I could.
But I played at Troy University. I'm from Mississippi, so
I played in Mississippi before that in high school and
then junior college, and uh came to Troy and played

(11:34):
there for three seasons for coach Bladaney, and then I
GA for two years after that, and then I moved
back home to Mississippi for a couple of years, and
then I UH one of our former coaches who were
playing this Friday night, Johnathan Chandler, gave me a call
and asked if I'd be interested in coming over here,
and I said, heck, yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:49):
Well talk about I know on the offensive line, you
mentioned the size, but also it takes some it takes
some brains too up there, because that's pretty complicated offense
when you know who to block, who to pick up in.

Speaker 4 (11:58):
That sort of thing.

Speaker 5 (11:59):
Absolutely, it's uh you know, one of the most challenging
positions on the field. You're doing something so unnatural a
lot of times, just backing up, and then you know
you're really having to take what everyone's giving you and
decide what your job is.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
You know.

Speaker 4 (12:12):
Uh, it's just.

Speaker 5 (12:14):
Such such a mix of I gotta be strong, I
gotta be fast, I gotta be agile, I gotta be smart.
You know, know my job it takes a lot of
study because you just see so much stuff. Which the
benefit for us when we get into the season is
we played against our defense since the spring and there
they do a lot of things. They're very multiple, and
they throw a bunch at they through the kitchen sink
at you. So I mean you've pretty much seen it

(12:34):
all by the time you get up and it's basically.

Speaker 4 (12:36):
A review every week.

Speaker 5 (12:38):
Remember guys, we did this, We saw this, so uh,
it's it's it's very challenging. It's a lot of pressure,
and everybody in the stands knows exactly who ain't doing
their job. When the offensive line messes up, it's just
you know, and no one sees like each position. You know,
they're like one guy on offensive line out of five
messes up and it's.

Speaker 4 (12:53):
The offensive line. So it's just very unique in that regard.

Speaker 5 (12:56):
You know, you get no praise and all the all
the blame sometimes, but it's a very rewarding position just
because you're you're just a purist of football. You just
play physical. You get to get after guys. You know,
It's just it can be a lot of fun if
you lay.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
Yourself and one thing with a style of offense that
you're playing. Now you're going under center and in the shotguns,
so kind of going back and forth.

Speaker 4 (13:15):
I know that can be challenging for sure.

Speaker 5 (13:17):
You know, for us, it's really just it honestly helps,
you know, because then you know, defense has to be
on their heels a little bit more, you know, seeing
what's gonna happen. And uh so it's.

Speaker 4 (13:26):
Been it's good for us.

Speaker 5 (13:27):
It's because we get a little little help with that
under center stuff in the run games, because you get downhill,
you know, we get to put our hand in the
dirt a little bit more, and then you get you know,
we add multiple tight ends and fullbacks this year, which
we haven't done that in a while, so that helps
adding bodies to the to uh the line of scrimmage
to hell. Block is uh, you can. You can do
a lot of stuff with that and give yourself advantages.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
What have you seen on film defensively about about Pike
Road that you'll have to be on top of Friday night?

Speaker 5 (13:55):
You know, I talked about our defense kind of throws
a lot at us and we kind of get prepared.

Speaker 4 (13:59):
One of the things that Pike Road does is they
they bring it.

Speaker 5 (14:02):
You know, there's gonna bring They're gonna be forty linemen
and an extra linebacker or two linebackers. You know, a
lot of four to six man pressure. Especially when you
go to start getting long yard of situations. They're gonna
bring the pressure. They're gonna bring the linebackers. They're gona
play agressive even in the run game. If they're not
b listening, those linebackers are just downhill. I think that's
one of the that'll be the biggest challenges for us.

(14:22):
It forces you to make quicker reactions. We like to
use a lot of double teams on offensive line. It
forces those double teams to either you can't do it
or you gotta do it real quick, so you won't
get as much on the guy as you want. So
I think just the speed of how fast those guys
play is gonna be a lot different than the past
couple of weeks that we've seen.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
Well, coach, appreciate the visit. I think next week we'll
get just do the Jared Fleming Show if that works
with you.

Speaker 5 (14:45):
I mean, I'm definitely I could clear my schedule for sure,
but it's fun.

Speaker 4 (14:49):
And we've got to get you to lunch on Thursday too.
I'm still wait on my meal, still waiting on that.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
Thank you, Coach, Jared Flemming, offensive line coach at open
like a high school. Don't forget Pike Road coming up
Friday night on the road. Get there early, gets you
a good seat, and as Coach Moore mentioned, maybe and
bring a line chair with you as well. Some good
spots there on the hill. And the Thursday lunch. Don't
forget First Baptist Church Opelika from noon until one, First
Baptist Church Opelika in the three sixteen Center. And we'll
see you next week right here on The Brian Moore Show.
