Speaker 1 (00:03):
This it's the Coach Brian Moore Show with Opahlaka had
football coach Brian Moore and now with Coach Moore, the
voice of the Bulldogs man Racks.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Game Week is here. We're glad you're went us on
the Brian Moore Show. It is officially Game Week edition
and we're getting ready for Benjamin Russell coming up on
Friday Night. Coach excitement is here. I know we've been
There's been so much going on before you know, Friday
Night gets here, I mean spring football and getting hired
on trying.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
To implement your system.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
I know, you just got to be excited to finally
put the total leather Friday night in Alexander City.
Speaker 4 (00:41):
Well, luckily, you know, Opulaika understands how much it takes
to get here to this point. You know, hiring me
all the way back in December made a massive difference
as far as us being able to get what we
wanted done.
Speaker 5 (00:52):
You know, it's not perfect. I mean we've been here
less than a year.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
But still tons of time and effort and energy from
multiple people to make this really good and to try
and to get our program going.
Speaker 5 (01:04):
You know.
Speaker 4 (01:05):
So yeah, you think back on all those days all
those two hour practice spring, you know, obviously summer fall
camp and we're finally the game week. There was a
different sense of excitement with our kids this week. This yesterday,
actually on Sunday, we went in and met and it
was really exciting for them to lift and to just
be playing somebody else.
Speaker 5 (01:25):
Friday, actually, after the meet.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
The Bulldogs, I said, I said, fall camp is done,
and it was like, you know, thank goodness, because it
was a grind.
Speaker 5 (01:32):
Man.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
Last week was one of the hardest weeks ever for
many reasons. Obviously practice, the heat, dealing with that, tons
of tackling and physicality at practice, but also all the
things that we did outside. We had the women's clinic,
we had our kickoff dinner Thursday night.
Speaker 5 (01:48):
It was really awesome. We had Meet the Bulldogs.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
We had over three hundred athletes and cheerleaders and dance
team members out on the field. It just has been
a it's been a lot of fun. It's been tough,
it's been a but that's what it's about.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Man.
Speaker 5 (02:01):
We're creating an experience for young people. But now all
that's behind us.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
Now it's time to focus on football and get into
the game planning piece and the scout piece.
Speaker 5 (02:10):
That's been a lot of fun for our staff and
our players.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
And I happen to go into the indoor facility right
before the main unit ran out, before the varsity scrimmage,
and the music, the excitement, the energy that was in
the air. I just I haven't seen it like that
in a while.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
Yeah, I mean the kids are excited, you know, and
now we want it to carry over obviously to our opponent,
and to.
Speaker 5 (02:30):
Compete and play well. On Fridays.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
It's a different deal, you know, when you get up
one of those Friday night lights. I mean there's something
different about that. Even from the scrimmage. You know, part
of the scrimmage purpose was to play under the lights
in Bulldog Stadium Friday, and some of our kids rose
to the occasion. Most a couple didn't, you know. And
so we're talking to those guys about, you know, what happened,
you know, what was going on with you had a
great week of practice, what happened Friday night. But there
is a lot of excitement around our program right now.
(02:53):
We've got a great senior class, you know, high character
senior class, tight knit, close, there's good players in there.
But it's even a better brotherhood and bond between those guys.
We've got one more event this week, Decals with Dad,
where our dads come and stick our helmets, and one
more event there.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
But really, I love.
Speaker 4 (03:11):
This group of seniors and just how close they all are.
And they want it, man, they want it for our city.
I mean, they want to be successful. You know, they're
tired of the past two years. You know, I keep
I talk about legacy a lot. You know, all of us,
we're leaving a legacy. It's sort of a fingerprint on
this world. And you know what does that look like?
And so for them, a part of their lives is
(03:32):
this football team and this program in this city and
what they can do for it and so and you
know how it is man, small town like we are.
When it's good, it's there's a frenzy and a feeling
that's unlike anything else.
Speaker 5 (03:45):
And so you know they're trying to capture that. And
I'm just excited to see them Friday night.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
I know, maybe it was that would be ideal to
play a home game for your first game at bulldogg Stadium,
and you've got to navigate the logistics of getting this
team on the road a forty five minute trip up
to Alexander City. Yeah, talk about the travel like itenerary
and kind of have what goes into that.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
You know, I am incredibly over I overanalyze that stuff,
you know, down to the second, you know that what
we're supposed to do, down to the environmental things that
we can control, from air conditioning and you know, charter
buses to be able to stay in the cool and.
Speaker 5 (04:22):
All the things that we do.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
You know, the logistical challenges that like we have a
pep rally Friday afternoon until three twenty five and then
we pregame right next door in the cafe. Miscelane and
her staff have done a tremendous job of that, but
we want to be back over at the facility about
three forty five. We partner stretch. We're on the road
at four, we're getting there. You know, buses sometimes a
little bit more than forty five, you know, a little
bit slower, and then we are absolutely rock and rolling.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
You know.
Speaker 4 (04:47):
The days when I was a player, we do the
bed down thing, you know, we'd lay around and watch movies.
And I actually played on Eastern time zone, so it
was even it was an eight o'clock kick you know,
and so it took forever for the game to get here.
We don't really have that, you know, when we get
into pregame and it's meetings, we're on the grass by
five point thirty to where our specialists, our queues, our bikes,
even our DB's are out there getting work. Our bigs
(05:08):
kind of stay in the air conditioned until six. But
every minute, you know, is analyzed and we make sure that,
you know, we don't sit too long, you know. All
the way down to what people have to understand is
like when you come back in the locker room, like
after you go through pregame, you know, do you stay
out there it'll six forty five and then come back
in the locker room.
Speaker 5 (05:24):
Do you sit too long? You know?
Speaker 4 (05:26):
Do you eat when you get back in there, you
get some fruit or you get a rice crispy?
Speaker 5 (05:29):
Or do you drink? What do you do?
Speaker 4 (05:30):
So all these things and look we're going through with
the staff that's new. So like on Sunday in our meeting,
you know, it was like tons and tons of information
for everybody within the program because it's all new, you know,
the travel and everything. So I don't have a lot
of guys that have seen it, you know the way
that I operate through pregame. So but I'll tell you this,
the kids handled it great and meet the Bulldogs. We
(05:52):
structured it that same way to where they had something
to do every second, so they kind of stayed on
schedule and their clocks in the locker room, and we try.
Speaker 5 (06:00):
To take out any excuses for not being exactly where you're.
Speaker 4 (06:02):
Supposed to be with what you're supposed to have on.
So anyway, I'm excited to see how we function through that.
I know they'll be a hiccup or two, but we'll
iron that out. We'll go back to the draw on board,
correct it, and then make it better for the next week.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
One advantage maybe for you, unlike on the other side
for Benjamin Russell playing a coach in his first year
at a program, is you know coach Rider has been there.
You know you're familiar with this style of football, and
for sure taking on the Wildcats on Friday night, I
know you've been able to scout a little bit of him,
probably from their their spring game and probably from the
games in years past.
Speaker 5 (06:31):
Oh for sure.
Speaker 4 (06:31):
Yeah, he you know, I've known coach for a long time.
I was not at Opal like at the same time
he was. We did not cross pass exactly, but we
played against each other. And he's a great coach and
uh he's got a great scheme and does a tremendous
job of getting guys.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
Ready to play. They got some big time.
Speaker 4 (06:48):
Players they I mean the receiver one is six '
five over two hundred pounds. He has offers from everybody
in the country, Ohio State and all they got heard
the five player in the twenty two.
Speaker 5 (07:00):
There's no doubt.
Speaker 4 (07:01):
I mean he is, you know when you start saying that, like,
I mean, he's gonna make his price, you know, and
so obviously you know where he is. But they've got
other dynamic weapons around him, and the cues a good player.
I like their full back a lot. He's a good player.
And then defensively they do a good job. Coach Grider
has always been you know, I think he may be
coming over to offense, but he'll have his defense.
Speaker 5 (07:18):
Where he wants it.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
You know, they'll run to the ball and tackle Ben
Russell's always been that way. It's always been a challenge
to go over there. It's an incredible stadium, incredible environment,
one of the last grass fields left, you know, but
a beautiful turf and they do such a good job.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
With their city.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
But they're gonna be ready to play and they're gonna
be excited. That was a third or fourth round team
last year in sixth A. They've got a good football
team and uh, you know, we'll have a work cut
out for us. I don't know who we are right now,
you know, that's the thing. You know, Ben Russell is
a really good football team. But right now, more than ever,
in your first game, you have to focus on your
sales and can like we be better longer? Like, can
(07:53):
we be consistent for four quarters? Because we've not done that.
We'll played a half against Clay All the summer stuff
you know wasn't four quarters. They didn't play sixty snaps.
So can we hold up you know in the heats
ninety five degrees? Can we hold up in that and
continue to be consistent when we're tired? And again it's
the sixtieth snap that we've played. So you know, I'm
(08:14):
eager to see our team. I'm like everybody else, be
honest with you, just I'm ready to see it. You know,
what does it look like? I know there's been a
ton of work. I know that we've improved the program.
I know that our kids have gotten bigger and stronger
and faster. I know that they are all in one
hundred percent buy in from our kids. There's zero issues
at practice. Everybody is full speed, ready to go every day.
I hope it pays off, you know, and I'm encouraged
(08:37):
by our efforts, but I'm also excited to see it.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
And one great thing for you. You mentioned the seniors.
You've got close to.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Forty seniors that can lead these guys on Friday nights
to help you.
Speaker 5 (08:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
Yeah, I mean, like I said, great senior class, but
I need them to take a There's a difference between
like self motivation and then like bringing other people with you,
you know, Like you know, you've got guys that are quiet,
that go about their work. Most of our guys, you know,
and they just you know, head down do their work.
But I need them to take the next step in
that leadership process. And so like we we meet and
(09:07):
talk about that, like what does that look like? You know,
what does leadership and bringing other people raising their level?
Speaker 5 (09:14):
I need I need.
Speaker 4 (09:15):
More guys on Mary Smiley's level, you know, I need
more guys on Brody Jones level, you know, and obviously
the league and you know and Tyler Moore and ty
Hudson and all those guys.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
It's not just about them.
Speaker 4 (09:25):
It's about that sophomore that's gonna be on kick off,
and it's about you know, the words of encouragement, like
I'm most excited about the sideline, like the feel.
Speaker 5 (09:35):
Like are we going to pull for each other?
Speaker 4 (09:37):
So like if I'm a defensive player and I have
to go back out there again over and over and over,
if we struggle on offense or vice versa, like, am
I going to continue to pull for my teammate? You know,
because when you don't have guys playing both ways, sometimes
there's a little us versus them. You know, we compete
all the time at practice, and very seldom we own
the same unit. So like you get a little bit
of that, and we got to be really cautious and
make sure that we're focused and that that we can
(09:59):
cont You need to encourage each other even through the
adverse situations.
Speaker 5 (10:02):
And then my job is to put them in those.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
Spots to where those leaders leaders have to step up,
you know, a practice where practice is really really hard
and adverse and what I'll do is I'll throw a
penalty flag whatever and keep the offense on the field
or whatever. Even if it's a bunch of jomps, you
know that that really didn't happen.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
I'll do it just to.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
Poke at them and see if it bothers them, you know.
And so I'm just excited to see those guys again.
They're doing everything they need to do right now, but
it's different on Friday, and I'm excited to see it.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
This is Opalaika is the longest running team that Benjamin
Russell's played in the history of the program. So coach
Grider says, you know, he's expecting a huge sellout rout
on the home side. I know there's plenty o like
a fans.
Speaker 5 (10:45):
Great scheduling by coach Groder. That was pretty sharp right there.
That was good.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
Get your tickets at go fan the game Friday night.
Speaker 5 (10:52):
Yep, yeah, no doubt. I think.
Speaker 4 (10:54):
You know, those games have always been massive, you know,
like I mentioned before, a lot of times we've been
in the same region. You know, our schools have played
each other for region seating, and so that's gone on
a lot. So over the years, all the coaches that
are there even the new ones and all that kind
of stuff. They've played Ben Russell, you know, one way
share for one, we played them when I was here before.
We've been to that stadium a lot. I feel like
(11:14):
it's and it's always so tough, man. The atmosphere and
environment is so tough to play there. But yeah, I'm
you know, that's gonna be a huge crowd. I know,
Opal like is going to travel. And then back to
your question a couple of minutes ago, you know, I
would love to play at home first.
Speaker 5 (11:28):
But the cool part is next week will feel kind.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
Of the same, the excitement of being back in Bulldog
Stadium week two, not to get ahead, but it will
have that.
Speaker 5 (11:37):
Same field, So that's kind of a cool way to
look at that as well.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
Yeah, So get your tickets a go fan again.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
Kick off seven o'clock from the Sports Plax in Alexander
City radio coverage.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
We'll begin at six o'clock.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
We've got a new Bulldog tailgate show with extended pregame coverage,
so an hour long pregame and then of course we'll
roll into the coaches interview and get you ready for
play by play. In the NFHS Network, does a great
job and of course they'll have the radio audio for
you if you can't make it down Alexander City and
uh ways to watch and ways to listen.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
Coach, appreciate the visit.
Speaker 5 (12:03):
Thanks so much. I appreciate you guys.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Next week we'll be recapping Benjamin Russell hopefully the big
win over the Wildcats, and previewing the Callaway Cavaliers game.
Back here next week on The Brian Moore Show
