Speaker 1 (00:02):
On the Bulldog Sports Network from Learfield. This is the
Bulldog Football Hour, prone to you by Table Mountain Casino.
Welcome to the table. Pepsi, official soft drink of Fresno
State Athletics, Seed Geek, the official ticketing partner of Fresno
State Athletics, EECU Smarter Bankings since nineteen thirty four, and
(00:24):
by but Late, Easy to Drink, Easy to enjoy. Now
live from the Point Pattio Baring Bistro. Here's your host,
the Voice of the Bulldogs, Paul Leffler.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Well, good evening. Here we are at the Point Pattio
Bar and Bistro, and it's a beautiful niight, got little
breeze blowing through. There's nothing falling from the sky just yet.
And even if it does, we're nice and safe and cozy.
And we've got the Yankees and Red Sox and two
Diamond Dogs going toe to toe on one screen, got
the Rams and former Bulldog DeVante Adams on the other screen,
(00:58):
and we get to talk about a team that's won
four straight games. And just want to know in the
Mountain West, who's excited about that? So coach matt Ends
is here in a little bit Sime and Harris Bulldog
Nickelback will join us as well. Saturday night seven thirty,
Nevada's in town the Sierra Showdown Rivalry.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Coach.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
I got to ask you, though, I mean, you didn't
have a game last week. Did you know what to
do with yourself? Did you watch forty two other games?
Speaker 4 (01:25):
I watched a lot of football.
Speaker 5 (01:27):
I actually I got to a game, watched a lot
of games when did a little recruiting. By the time
Sunday morning hit, I was ready to get back to work.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Well, and apparently I had a bye week too, because
I forgot the most important thing. I mean, we're not
supposed to hear your voice till we hear that other
voice say your name. I mean, I forgot to give
you a proper introduction again. So if you come to
Valley Children Stadium Saturday night seven thirty is the kickoff
against Nevada.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
When the Bulldogs are.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Introduced, you might hear something like this, Ladies and gentlemen,
boys and girls, please welcome. The coach has his team
four and one and one in Ohero in the Mountain West,
but every weekend is trying to go one and oh.
Head coach for your Bulldogs ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker 6 (02:09):
Matt ends appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Thank you, thank you. So that's how it's done.
Speaker 2 (02:15):
Thank you, Matt Leaver, the voice of Valley Children's Stadium.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
He didn't follow you around on the bye week, did he?
Speaker 4 (02:21):
I didn't. If he did, he was incognito.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Okay, good.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
And you didn't call it a bye week with your team.
You did something. I've been around a lot of coaches
for a lot of years, and I can't remember another
coach approaching it the way that you did. You came
up with another name for the week to put it
in their brain psychologically where you wanted their focus to be.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Can you elaborate on that a little bit.
Speaker 5 (02:44):
We called it Bulldog Week, and we wanted our energies,
our thought process to just kind of, you know, be
all about us, especially early.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
In the week.
Speaker 5 (02:54):
We dove into the battle last week, of course, but
you know, early in the week, I wanted our coaches
to be throwing some self scout some things, you know,
did We have some tendencies that we needed to take
into account.
Speaker 4 (03:06):
And I thought that if.
Speaker 5 (03:06):
We just called it bulldog Week, it would maybe garner
a little more attention. Sometimes when you hear the word by.
You know, when you have a buy in a tournament,
that means you do you don't have anything. Well, that's
not what.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
We were doing. We were still getting better.
Speaker 5 (03:18):
We were still approaching it as if there were some
incremental gains and continuous improvement that were needed.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
I heard a story from a Bulldog legend. This week,
you know the nineteen eighty five team is going to
be there.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
Yep, I'm gonna get a chance to go meet most
of them.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
Twelve nine outstanding, eleven zero to one. The last undefeated
team that Fresno State has had forty years ago in
nineteen eighty five. And I won't say who the player was,
but one member of that team told me that, you know,
they had to buy on their schedule. And one of
the players came up to coach Jim Sweeney and he said, Coach,
this team we're playing this week, who in the world
is b ye?
Speaker 4 (03:55):
That would make you second guess a couple of things
if you're a coach.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
I haven't verified with the person in question, but maybe
you can tomorrow night. And that's one thing I know, Coach,
that the alumni have really appreciated the genuine way that
you've reached out to them and expressed your interest in
getting connected and having them be a part of the program.
What's it like for you when you're meeting some of
these guys for the first time and they're telling you
(04:21):
stories from ten, twenty, thirty, forty fifty years ago about
this program that now you have the privilege of leading.
Speaker 4 (04:27):
Well, I think it's exciting to hear the stories, you know.
Speaker 5 (04:30):
One of the things that's you know, when you think
of Fresno State football, you think of a program that
has great tradition and history. You know, Coach Sweeney, Coach Hill,
coach Tedford, all had tremendous amount of success, all had
some some of the best college football players soon to
be Hall of Fame type of type of players. And
(04:52):
when you hear the stories, when you see the camaraderie
in the brotherhood, when they all get back together. I mean,
I think this weekend, the last list I was given
for the eighty five team, close to forty former players
are going to.
Speaker 4 (05:04):
Be back here.
Speaker 5 (05:06):
I think it just says a lot about the experience,
and I want to make sure that our kids have
a valued experience while they're here. I want them to
leave here with a degree had opportunity to win championships
and if they, if they're good enough, they'll get to
the NFL.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Yeah, and you mentioned something that I guess we should
circle back on because we haven't had a show in
a couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
You guys had the bye week.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
But since then, the latest list of Hall of Fame
nominees has come out and there are two former Bulldogs
who are going to be voted on this year, Logan
Mankins and Lorenzo O'Neil. There's a guy who played a
little bit before then, in fact, played with a lot
of the guys on that eighty five team a couple
of years earlier, Henry Ellard, who I've long thought belongs
in there as well. Fresno State's never had someone get
(05:48):
that bust in Canton, Ohio. What do you think that
would mean for the program for recruiting when the first
Bulldog goes in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
Well, just notoriety. Anytime you have someone going, if.
Speaker 5 (06:01):
It's a college Hall of Fame, the NFL Hall of Fame,
I think just you know, I know, if either one
of those young gentlemen made it, uh, I think it
says a ton about the development process. That's that's that's
been in place here and that we're continuing to have
and that we're emphasizing right now and bringing you know,
(06:22):
young men from high school level that are only scratching
the surface from a talent standpoint, and and give them
all the tools and all the things necessary to be
great Bulldogs.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
And I was just thinking as you're talking, Uh, you
know the fact that right now the guys nominated are
Logan Mankins and Lorenzo Neal and you probabe yourself on
having a physical football team. I don't know if there
have been two more physical Bulldogs or physical NFL players
that Logan Makins and Lorenzo.
Speaker 5 (06:51):
Now, you're exactly right, and we were we were this
this fall camp. Lorenzo came and spoke to the team
and talked about being a dual athlete, dual sport, you know,
a tremendous wrestler and as long along with a long,
long career in the NFL as a full back ball carrier,
skilled you know, special teams guru. And uh, it was
(07:11):
good for our players to see that. You know, now
he's back in Fresno and in the area. This is
still home to him, And I think that validates too
what we're trying to trying to sell the recruits, what
we're talking about, you know, recruit and retain kids and
develop them while they're here.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
And just taring you mentioned Lorenzo Neil and wrestling and
thinking about your own childhood growing up in Iowa. I mean,
is there a state where wrestling is a bigger deal
than the state of Iowa.
Speaker 5 (07:38):
Probably not, you know, if you know now that you
know high school female girl wrestling is a huge deal.
Most of the colleges in the state of Iowa have
have women's wrestling.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
Yea.
Speaker 5 (07:51):
You know, I think when you're born, a singlets thrown
into your crib somewhere along the way for most kids.
So yeah, if you don't wrestle, everyone does at some point,
you know, growing up.
Speaker 3 (08:00):
So you did a little bit of that, a little bit.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
Yep.
Speaker 5 (08:03):
I got tired of losing all the weight, so I
was wrestled before there was the two hundred and twenty
two hundred and fifteen pound class. So it was either
try to beat the heavyweight or get down to like
one ninety seven, and I was that wasn't me.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
I like food too much.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
Well, and it kind of doesn't match football, right, they're
kind of counter prioritized there. I had a feeling there's
a little wrestling in your background, and.
Speaker 5 (08:28):
My dad wrestled through high school, my grandfather. I had
a cousin that ended up wrestling in college a number
of When I was a junior in high school, our
high school wrestling team was ranked like third in the country.
Like eight of those guys went on in wrestled Division
one University of Iowa, Oklahoma State Army, And so, I
mean it was a big deal. Dan Gable went to
(08:49):
the high school that I attended. So when you walk in,
there's a massive statue with a replica gold medal right there.
So you know, the minute you walk into the building,
you're already thinking about wrestling.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
You beat me to it.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
I was just about to ask you how big a
deal it would be if Dan Gable came to town.
But he's actually from your town.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
He is, yeah, he is, so yep, there's the what
is there?
Speaker 5 (09:10):
There's a wrestling Hall of Fame right there in Waterloo
that has a ton of memorabilia from his Olympic experience,
from his time at Iowa State.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
His time at i was a head wrestling coach.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
A lot of history, and the Bulldogs are trying to
make it five straight wins when they take the field
on Saturday night against Nevada. We're going to talk about
that matchup. But one while we're on this topic of
legends and Hall of Fame and all that, the other
thing that happened between the last time we had a
show and now is it was announced that not at
this home game, but your next home game against San
Diego State, our friend Jeff Tedford will go in Fresno
(09:46):
State's Ring of Honor.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
So you've had coach Tedford out of practice, I know, yeah,
we can get here for that, yep.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
I bet that's going to bring another element too when
you have him in the house watching guys that he recruited,
and your job is go win that game.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
No doubt, no doubt. You know coach Tedford.
Speaker 5 (10:03):
Ted has a great relationship with a number of young
men on our end, coaches on our in our program
right now, and so you know, for him on homecoming
night to be inducted into the Ring of Honor in
Valley Children Stadium will be a special moment for him
and his family, but for a lot of former players
too that had opportunity to either play with him, work
for him, or play for him.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
Yeah, the only bad part for you is you're gonna
be in the locker room talking to your team, you.
Speaker 4 (10:28):
Know, to see you know what, Well, I'll I'll enjoy
the moment.
Speaker 5 (10:32):
It'll be fun to see him because I know he'll
he'll be super excited all week long.
Speaker 2 (10:36):

Being born and raised in a central valley, it's always
been a dream to come back and be able to
work here. My name is doctor Adam Shinkawa. I'm a
general dentist as Shinkawa Dental and this is my FFB
Bank story.
Speaker 6 (11:27):
FFB Bank is great.
Speaker 7 (11:28):
They have a local touch, local feel, but they have
the bandwidth of a national bank. From processing deposits, applying
for loans and getting credit lines, they can do at all.
Something our dad taught us is that dentistry isn't just
about treating teeth, but helping people. And this is exactly
the culture and feeling we get at FFB.
Speaker 8 (11:49):
You hear that, that's the sound of Pepsi zero sugar.

Go Dogs, Welcome back. It's the Bulldog Football Hour.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
We're here at the Point Patiobarnbistro, northwest corner of Willow
and Knees. There may be some drops falling out of
the sky, but we've got shelter. We've got fantastic food.
Boy everything smells good. Jim has pounding the Brussels sprouts
over there. Tom and Doug got the steak salads. Jim
McBee over here had the meatballs and now they're gone.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
And that's something new on the menu here.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
We're one of the fall specials anyway, Spaghetti and meatballs
topped with ricotta and frstgrated parmesan with those little garlic christinies. Man,
I'm getting hungry just talking about it. They've got the
salmon with pumpkin risotto, co chens. Have you ever had
pumpkin risotto?
Speaker 4 (15:05):
I don't think I have. Is risotto kind of like rice?
Speaker 3 (15:07):
It is?
Speaker 2 (15:08):
Yeah, it's kind of like then I'm not having it.
Not a rice guy, Nope. Is that just because you
grew up on corn and you can't stand rice?
Speaker 4 (15:15):
No, I used to eat a lot of rice.
Speaker 5 (15:17):
I mean rice is inexpensive and easy to make in college,
and once I got a real job, I said I
was done eating rice.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
Got it different strokes, different folks.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
And for those who enjoy rice, that pumpkin risotto is
calling your name. I'm also told this new roasted beet
salad is top notch. It's got Chris fried pershudo. Now
I've had that on the peach salad here and that's
really good fried goat cheese. Goat cheese is kind of
hard to fry. They must have a delicate chef who
gets that done. So the roasted beet salad is a
new favorite here. And if you do come for Sunday
(15:50):
brunch at the Point Patio Bar and Bistro, they are
debuting their new Brussels benedict. So if you come this
Sunday for Sunday brunch, Chris fried Brussels sprouts topped with bacon,
a fried egg, and hollandaise sauce. That's how they do
it here at the Point Patti Obar and Bistro. But Coach,
I'm guessing you're going to stick to your consistent order
(16:11):
of the spicy chicken app.
Speaker 5 (16:13):
If they're gonna, if they'll allow me, I've had it
four weeks in a row now, so I'm not changing.
Speaker 2 (16:19):
I think they need to put a picture of you
on it on the menu, right next to it, as
long as the Bulldogs keep winning. Now, I know you
preach consistency to your team. You never want them to
get a big head. You don't want them to be
too confident or not confident enough. But do you feel
some momentum from winning four straight games and the way
you've been able to pull out a couple of close
(16:40):
games on the road.
Speaker 5 (16:42):
To a certain extent, I think more just excited that
we were able to win the way we did. You know,
when you're dealing with eighteen to twenty two year olds,
it's always a raced to maturity, and I think a
couple of those wins have shown a level of maturity.
It's hard to you know, come back in the in
the fourth quarter and beat people, and so that was exciting.
(17:03):
That and situational awareness two minute end of game scenarios.
Speaker 4 (17:08):
We've been really good so far.
Speaker 5 (17:10):
And that's something that we emphasize is you know, we
don't want the moments to be too.
Speaker 4 (17:14):
Big for our players.
Speaker 5 (17:14):
We want them to understand, you know, the moments, and
so we do a lot of that. We try to
incorporate a lot of those moments into practice during the week.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
And you had some real special moments in the Hawaiian game.
I know you're asked a few times about it Monday,
and you had to kind of tap into your memory
banks because you've already moved on emotionally, psychologically, mentally to Nevada,
can we hit on a couple things for that Hawaii game? Sure,
I was impressed and actually both road wins. To me,
(17:43):
the thing that impressed me the most was how your
team handled some bad breaks, because there were some moments
in that game that could have really swung everything right.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
At Oregon State.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
Kve On Thunderbird makes the tremendous play, knocks the ball loose,
there's no flag on the field, but all of us sudden.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
After a replay they say, oh, it's targeting.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
He's out of the game, right, and that I mean
it could have swung the outcome of the game. But
your team didn't let that happen. The Hawaii game, and
there's a pass you believe is forward and incomplete that
gets ruled lateral and a fumble recovery and a touchdown
for Hawaii and it stands on replay and you're down
nine to nothing, and teams that maybe aren't as focused,
(18:25):
united or disciplined could let that snowball and turn into
a loss. What do you think enabled your team in
both of those cases to find a way no matter
what was happening outside of their control.
Speaker 5 (18:36):
Well, I think one of the things that our staff,
myself and even our veterans we talk a lot about
is let's worry about.
Speaker 4 (18:42):
The things we can control.
Speaker 5 (18:43):
And in both those scenarios, both those whatever happened in
those moments, was out of our hands. And so why
are we going to lose any Let's not lose any
sleep over it. Let's move on and regroup and continue
to play. You know, I don't think we've played our
best football. I continue to chant, you know, our group
of you know, players and coaches that there's our best
(19:04):
version of ourselves is still ahead of us. But you know,
let's it's it's about execution and energy and if we
can if we can hone in on those two things
and execute with with great energy on every snap, we're
gonna have an opportunity to win games. We know it's
gonna We got to play the long game every week.
We got to be prepared to go into the fourth quarter,
keep it close, and win it late.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
And you've been able to do that four straight wins.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Looking for number five on Saturday against a one in
three Nevada team that we'll talk a little more about
in the moment. But thinking back on that Hawaii game,
I mean, a I was really impressed with EJ Warner,
his decision making, the timing of some of the decisions
he made. I think one play that really stands out
for me, which also showcased a weapon, maybe more so
than he's been showcased so far as a bulldog in
(19:48):
cam Beacham where EJ just has a split second to
get rid of that football otherwise it's a sack or
a turnover, turns into almost a touchdown and the longest
play of Cam's career and set up a touchdown.
Speaker 5 (19:58):
No doubt that was That was a big time play
at at a moment where we needed, you know, in
explosive play. And I think in that game we won
the explosive play battle and that was part of it.
And you know, it's fun to see both those players.
EJ continuing to elevate his game, understanding game plans, helping
coach Davis go through the game plans and giving his
(20:19):
suggestions and what he likes on on third down, what
he likes on God to have it downs. But then
seeing Cam a young man who didn't know what his
future looked like. When when matt Ens became head football coach,
didn't know anything about what we were going to do offensively,
and all of a sudden heard the that way we're
going to be in twelve thirteen personnel. We're going to
use tight ends. And look at the success he's having. He,
(20:42):
I mean, has a smile on his face every day.
You know, I love it when when guys are seniors
and they're having their best their best days right now.
You know that means that they're they're they're validating all
the hard work and the energy. You know, we don't
want to skip development. We don't skip work at Fresno State.
And Cam's that's really reaping the benefits of that.
Speaker 2 (21:03):
And another play that I thought kind of got overlooked
because obviously all the takeaways were huge for your defense.
Alzillian Hamilton's pick was just as big as kve On's
pick six.
Speaker 3 (21:12):
Broka got the pick, you're.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
Forcing a sack fumble, but the long kickoff return by
speedy Luke that sets up with a short field on
a critical possession.
Speaker 3 (21:23):
Not every team has a speedy Luke.
Speaker 4 (21:25):
No, they don't, Thank goodness, right.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
And I'm just imagining that you and your staff are
trying to cook up more ways to get the ball
in his hands in space.
Speaker 5 (21:34):
But more ways or more ways to use him as
a D eight decoys. Everyone knows where number two is yea,
And so how can we utilize him in motion game?
How can we utilize him on special teams to he's
gonna garner attention wherever he goes. Well, does that mean
we're gonna create one on one coverage somewhere else because
they're gonna tip coverage, They're gonna they're gonna set the
(21:55):
front to speedy because they're concerned about him in the
run game or ball catching balls out of the backfield,
or on special teams. And so you know, that's a
complimentary offense right there, when we all work together, you know,
to make sure we put a good product on the field.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
And situational execution. I mean I saw that offense, defense,
and special teams really during this win streak when guys
understand the stakes and they're coming through in big moments
and it's impressive to watch. I did want to ask
you about I don't think I asked you about this.
You know, Hawaii was very aggressive defensively and neutralized your
run game like no one had since maybe the Kansas game.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
Right, did you guys see that.
Speaker 2 (22:35):
Coming and have to shift to you know, being more
effective in the passing game, or calling some different plays,
looking at it a little differently, or did you anticipate
that Hawaii was going to be that aggressive defense.
Speaker 5 (22:47):
Well, we knew that they were well coached, and they
had shown that they played with great energy, and we
know when you go over to the island, they're going
to play even with greater energy than they will when
they travel. But they did knock Asata kind of some
of the things that we wanted to accomplish in the
run game maybe on our initial game plan. So as coaches,
there was a few moments of scrambling and trying to
(23:09):
you know, recall some things that that maybe we ran
in fall camp that we had not hadn't really necessarily practiced.
But that's that's why you practice in fall camp. That's
why you install everything. So on moments like this you
can recall some things, and you know, we got the
run game going late when we needed to a little bit.
Of course, you know, I think that's been a that's
(23:30):
been a motivating factor right now with our offensive line
this week. We've had a really good week the two
weeks that we've been bulldog week in this week because
you're only as good as your last game, and so
you got you ask guys like rolland Fullwood or Eddie
Spoemer you know, uh, you bring up why uh, and
then and they get they get grumpy real quick.
Speaker 2 (23:52):
I like it, and I also like the fact that
you've built some depth on that offensive line. So when
you're you're freshman left tackle went down to injury, you've
got a veteran like Tory and Penright who can step
right in there and fill the gap. A lot of
people have asked me, how's Braden Walton doing? When might
we expect to see him back? Any injury updates on
him or anybody else?
Speaker 5 (24:13):
You know, We're trying to see where it is, but
it's going to be a game time decision, you know.
Otherwise we're as bout as healthy as we could be.
There's a couple guys that we'll probably get back the
next bye week, you know, after this two game series
we have coming up, you know, which will help us
in some critical spots as well, and continue to create
(24:35):
some depth for us, especially as you get into the
late October and November.
Speaker 4 (24:40):
That healthy teams are usually good teams.
Speaker 2 (24:43):

Speaker 2 (28:43):
But Cam beacham with the longest play of his Bulldog career.
Speaker 4 (28:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (28:50):
I think we were just talking about that play and
I forgot that Pat Hill was coaching up Jake Tarwater
to get that leap block going down on the field.
We're gonna have fun with Hotel Cam Morrell. Our whole
crew will be out there Saturday night, seven thirty kickoff.
Hope you're going to be there, Coach Hetz told me
that the game time temperature for a kickoff on Saturday night.
(29:10):
Are you sure we're not moving that game to San
Diego or something?
Speaker 3 (29:13):
Coach? What did you say the temple was gonna be?
Speaker 4 (29:14):
I thought I saw sixty seven degrees.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
Sixty seven degrees for kickoff Saturday night at Valley Children Stadium.
Speaker 3 (29:20):
You can't beat that. Pleasant's a rivalry.
Speaker 2 (29:22):
It's Fresno State and Nevada what I like to call
the Sierra Showdown. It's been a great rivalry. These two
teams have played each other every year this century. You
haven't been a part of this rivalry yet, coach, but
I'm sure you've heard a thing or two they have.
Speaker 4 (29:35):
You know, when when you have you know, Coach Hill
comes out, he talks.
Speaker 5 (29:38):
You know, he's my resident historian for Bulldog football and
comes out to practice almost two or three times that
week and gives me the gives me the late whatever
information he has on that week's opponent.
Speaker 4 (29:51):
I get it. Yeah, which is awesome, because again, this
is every day's brand new for me. Right now. You know,
today's the what is the second of October, It's the
first second of October. I've been the head coach for
the Bulldogs, and so you know.
Speaker 5 (30:04):
His his knowledge, are you know our staff's knowledge, j
D Williams, those guys, that's critical to give me a
little bit inside on account what to expect.
Speaker 2 (30:14):
And you can expect a tough Nevada team one and
three against a tough schedule. But you know, Jeff Choate
is a guy who he's about his fiery as coach
Hill and about his colorful and unpredictable And I know
that the pass across for coach Choate and you and
some of your assistants in the past.
Speaker 5 (30:30):
Yep, yep, I've played against him when he was head
coach at Montana State. You know, have a ton of
respect for their program. They play extremely hard defensively, Uh,
they have two defensive ends that are as good as
collectively as we've seen on the same team.
Speaker 18 (30:45):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (30:45):
They play really well up front in their front seven. Offensively,
they have a Chubb, a purty brother of Rock Parties
their quarterback. Everything goes through him. They got dig designer quarterback. Run,
move the pocket and he'll take He's athletic enough to
hurt you and scramble mode. If you're playing a bunch
of back to the ball coverage, and so we have
(31:07):
to be We're gonna have to be at the top.
Speaker 4 (31:09):
Of our game. I know they're one in three, but
that means nothing.
Speaker 5 (31:12):
Right now, we're both coming off of bye we're both,
you know, still trying to search for the best version
of ourselves.
Speaker 4 (31:18):
And I know they'll be ready to play.
Speaker 2 (31:20):
Seven thirty on Saturday night at Fresno State against the
University of Nevada. I'm gonna have the Voice of Valley
Children Stadium, Matt Leever come back up because we've got
another special guest to introduce. But as he's walking this way,
you mentioned Chubb a party Brock Parties younger brother against
of course Kurt Warner's son EJ. And for some reason,
they all wear number thirteen. But he is a physical runner.
(31:44):
How do you coach up your defenders to handle that,
because sometimes guys are a little hesitant when it's the
quarterback running the football. They're afraid to get in the flag.
I'm sure you don't want them to play afraid. How
do you coach them to the edge of being effective
without dangerous.
Speaker 5 (31:58):
Well, I think when you're when you're playing a team
that's going to lean on plus one run game, he
becomes a ball carrier, and so he'd loses, you know,
the minute he takes off with he loses some of
that protection he's supposed to that the quarterback has. Yes,
he's supposed to and but so again just it's preparation.
And you know, our scout team quarterbacks got probably knocked
(32:20):
around a little bit this week because you know, normally,
you know, they're in a different color jersey, we don't
touch them. But this is a different element that we're
playing this week. And so if we can, if if
if we can slow him down, we feel like we
have an opportunity to slow them down offensively, you know,
and make them do, make them one dimensional, make them
do what they don't want to do, and that's you know,
(32:41):
sit back and have to you know, five step, you know,
and throw the ball downfield in the vertical passing game.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
Can't wait Saturday night, seven thirty against the University of Nevada.
We've got coach Matt Entz here and we have another
special guest. We'll let the voice of the Valley Children Stadium,
Matt Leever, introduce him. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,
please welcome this nickelback who wears number five looking to
make a big hit on Saturday. Please welcome Simi and Hard.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
That's how it's done.
Speaker 4 (33:15):
That was impressive.
Speaker 2 (33:16):
And as Simeon settles in coach, what have you appreciated
about number five on defense so far in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 5 (33:23):
He's the minute he hit campus, there was a level
of leadership that he provided. I mean, he's played a
lot of football, which I think was valuable. We needed
some experience, you know when we first got here, Guys
that have kind of gone through the offseason, guys that
have gone through the installation in the summer that that
could help the young guys. And then you know, Simeon's
one of those guys that just has contagious energy. He's
(33:47):
got a smile, he's he comes out to practice ready
to go, you know, and guys gravitate to that. And
so you need your best players, need to be your
best leaders, but they also need to come ready to
go every day.
Speaker 4 (33:58):
And that's one things done for us.
Speaker 2 (34:02):
And it was two weeks ago now, but that play
against Hawaii game on the line, two point conversion can
tie it for the Rainbow Warriors. What did you see
from number five on that play?
Speaker 4 (34:12):
Great coverage.
Speaker 5 (34:12):
You know, guy that trusted his eyes, great eye discipline.
When you have great eyes, you have great feet. And
so he leaned on his fundamentals and technique, the things
that we talked about all the time.
Speaker 4 (34:21):
And you know, superior athlete.
Speaker 2 (34:23):
One, superior athlete one. There's a smile from Sidmey and Harris.
I got to ask you, mister Harris, when you're lining
up for a two point conversion, you know, if they
get it, this game could end up in overtime. Who
knows what's gonna happen. What's going through your mind before
they snapped that football?
Speaker 10 (34:42):
And uh, you know, our linebacker JP said, we ain't
going overtime. We had a fourteen play drive. We was tired,
and you know we all just trust our training, trust
our technique and fundamentals. I said, feet said, ready to
go and do what we coached and just make the
play when it comes to you.
Speaker 2 (35:01):
And is that one of those where you don't think
he caught it, but you don't know for sure until
you turn the other way and see the football rolling
in the ntel.
Speaker 10 (35:08):
I ain't realize that. I was like, I punched all
the way through and I looked and I seen the
ball rolling and I didn't realize, like, oh, that was
a two point. Then I got up and celebrated it
should be over, and then I had to go to
on side. So man, it was Greaty, it was fun.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 2 (35:26):
We still had the on sidekick after that, and Ezekiel
Abbott was able to secure that for you guys, And
you mentioned JP. That's Jaden Pearson who's been our guest
here at the Bulldog Football Hour previously, and you go
a little further back with him than most of your teammates.
Is that something you guys talked about during the transfer
process about coming here together or No, we had.
Speaker 10 (35:47):
A FaceTime call about it in the portal and weve
go for an portal and I was like, man, let's
do it, you know, and we're both here. He's my
roommate also, so we're always together. We watched film together
almost every night. You come in Sunday night, watched film
on an opponent Monday night, watched film after practice. So
me and him just try to stay on the same page.
Speaker 8 (36:08):
You know.
Speaker 10 (36:08):
I'm a Nickel, he's a Will and our Mike Becker
in the middle. We all on the same page.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
So we're talking to Simy and Harris Bulldog nickel back
number five, gotta be taking the field against Nevada Saturday night.
Last year he was playing for the Utah State Aggies.
They'll be here at the end of the year as
well at Valley Children Stadium. What was it about coach
And it's in this staff, in this program that told you,
you know what, none of those other schools I'm talking
to are where I want to be.
Speaker 3 (36:32):
I need to be a Bulldog.
Speaker 10 (36:33):
Well, first was the fact that it's Residal State and
I got ties at Fresnel State. I was with my
mom and AUNTSI were cheerleaders here, and uh, you know
that bulldog born spirit. And then coach ch and his staff,
you know, they're very family oriented and they didn't really
talk about football much. They talked about, you know, building
us as young men and after football, you know, putting
(36:56):
school first, faith and all that, and those things stood
out to me is what I wanted to be.
Speaker 2 (37:02):
And coach, you know, you say all those things, but
it's not every day that you get to hear your
players reflecting something that you hope they received their digestives.
What does it do for you when you hear players
talking about the same things that you've been trying to
sew into their lives.
Speaker 4 (37:20):
Well, that tells me that they're listening.
Speaker 5 (37:22):
So being a parent, you always appreciate that because I
know my darn boys, they hear me plenty, but I
don't know if they're listening to me.
Speaker 4 (37:31):
But you know, I mean, it's game day and wins
are unbelievably important. I get it. Yeah, that's what we're
here for, is to win games.
Speaker 5 (37:40):
But at the same time, we're here to impact young
men's lives, give them the tools to be dads, husbands, businessmen,
church members, whatever. They're all going to be professional in something.
Someday Football ends.
Speaker 4 (37:52):
For all of us. It ended for me thirty five
years ago.
Speaker 5 (37:55):
The head football coach I had gave me the tools
to go be successful, and I decided I'm gonna go
pay it for And so hopefully these guys they have
a true valued experience here at Fresno State.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
Sounds like that's in progress for mister Harris here, Simmy
and Harris is here. Coachens is going to eat that
spicy chicken wrap. I guess we'll let you enjoy that
with your wife, Brenda. Coach anything else you want to
say to the Red Wave before we put Simmia into
the hot seat.
Speaker 5 (38:19):
Hey, let's let's fill that stadium. Let's let's get there early.
Let's make a lot of noise early on third down.
Let's make it almost impossible for our opponent to communicate.
And I know, I know our young men are going
to be ready to play. They're excited. You can tell
that it's been two weeks. They're tired of practicing again.
I think I saw a little bit of that maybe today,
like we're doing this again, but you know, we're we're
(38:42):
gonna get it. We're gonna practice until we don't get
it wrong. And I'm excited about this group. We're ready
to get back on the field. And playing at home
is such a such a fun atmosphere, and the Red
Wave does a tremendous job of showing up and showing out.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
Hey, you haven't had a sell out yet. You talking
about first, this is your first October second as the
Bulldog's head coach. You talked about before the Hawaii game,
the importance of the first road game. If you win
the first road game, what that does for you. Now
this is your first conference home game, how special would
that be if you had your first sellout for your
first conference home game.
Speaker 4 (39:15):
That'd be great. You remember what you remember very well.
Speaker 5 (39:19):
If you win all the first you're gonna win a
lot of games during the year, right, So this is
a first conference game at home, you know, against a
good opponent. We need to make sure we walk in
there and play, you know, great execution, great energy. But
it'd be great to see the Red Waves show up
and that Green V section get packed and and we'll
give them plenty of cheer about I.
Speaker 3 (39:39):
Hope sounds like a plan.
Speaker 2 (39:40):
He's coach matt Ents seven thirty Saturday Night, Valley Children Stadium,
and we're gonna still be here at the point for
another twenty minutes talking to Simmey and Harris Bulldog Nickelback.
He's talked about his mom and Anti being cheerleaders at
Fresno State. Maybe we can figure it out the years.
I wonder if that coincided with the team that's going
to be honored Saturday night, the unbeaten Bulldogs of Night
eighteen eighty five. We'll dig a little deeper with Simeon

if you come here Sunday for brunch, you can watch
all that NFL football on the patio, like we're watching

best player in the history of baseball, or the guy
who won the College World Series on the mound for
the Dogs seventeen years ago. Now Justin Wilson who's still
killing it in the big leagues. So that's on TV.
Great food on your plates and another new menu itdem
to tell you about here at the Point. If you're
up for dessert, the pumpkin spice crem brewlat topped with
(44:15):
fresh berries sounds pretty good. Simmy and Harris is here
with the Bulldog secondary nickelback transferred from Utah State talked
about that, he mentioned that his mother and his auntie
were bulldog cheerleaders.
Speaker 3 (44:28):
That was in the early nineteen nineties. Simeon, Yes, yes, yes,
and I'm.
Speaker 2 (44:33):
Sure you've seen a few photos. In fact, I think
i've seen a few photos. Your mom's throwing a few
up on social media. And your mother actually ran track
at Fresno State as well.
Speaker 10 (44:41):
Yeah, her last year here she ran track also.
Speaker 3 (44:44):
So is that where your speed comes from?
Speaker 10 (44:46):
Yeah, I mean, yeah, my daddy don't like that, but yeah, probably.
Speaker 2 (44:54):
How old were you when you started hearing stories about
this place called Fresno State?
Speaker 10 (45:00):
Ever since I started playing full six years old, she's
been talking about the four pall and bulldogs. She got
pins hung up all in my room, so yeah, she's
all about the bulldogs, man.
Speaker 2 (45:11):
So you know what question I have to ask you that?
I mean, was it just a little teenage rebellion or
why weren't you a bulldog from.
Speaker 4 (45:19):
The get go?
Speaker 10 (45:22):
God got a path for everybody, you know, Amen. So
that's just the way I went. I don't regret any
of my decisions, but I'm blessed to be here now, grateful,
just the happiest I ever been. As I'm mature through
my college career from freshman year until now, I'm really
blessed to be here, and then I'm glad I'm here
now you know, it's the winning games and you know,
(45:44):
so thanks sir.
Speaker 3 (45:46):
I think what you said there is very true and
a very.
Speaker 2 (45:49):
Mature perspective, and it sounds like people are pretty glad
to have you at a Bulldog uniform. Let's talk about
the position you play, because it's a little different in
different defenses, and maybe some people don't quite understand what
you do.
Speaker 3 (46:02):
Or they say, are you a corner, are you a safety?
Are you something else?
Speaker 2 (46:06):
How would you explain the mindset and the versatility it
requires to play the position you're playing. Now they maybe
move that microphone just a little up in front of
your mouth.
Speaker 19 (46:16):
There we go.
Speaker 10 (46:17):
Yeah, I'm more of like a hybrid type of player.
Go out in the slot and cover you know, the
little slot speedy guys, and sometimes you get two tight
ends on the field in the box with the linebackers also,
so you know, just the versatility of that position is.
It can be hard at times. You know, some nickels
(46:37):
are bigger, some are smaller, some are faster, but you know,
with me, I pretty much do it all. So that
position is I don't really know how to explain it
is just I think the nickel position the best athlete
on the field. If we're talking, you know, so.
Speaker 3 (46:53):
The equivalent to the shortstop out of baseball table, yes exactly.
Did you play baseball? No basketball?
Speaker 10 (47:00):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (47:01):
So that's what I was thinking, is you were talking.
Speaker 2 (47:03):
You know, sometimes I may have to take a guy
down low, but other times I may want to hang
out on the perimeter. You know, it sounds like you
probably need a little different mentality for covering a guy
in the slot versus throwing your head into the box right.
Speaker 10 (47:19):
You know, when you're on the outside, all you thinking
about is I got to cover this guy as at
passing down. But my mind changes on first second down
with two tight ends in the game, three tight ends maybe,
and I'm right on the hill line of the D line,
like I gotta fit my gap first, you know. So
you know I switched my mind back and forth. Get
the call from the sideline, like co says, rely on
(47:41):
your training, relying your coaching. Get your eyes set and
your feet set, and be ready to go.
Speaker 2 (47:45):
So we're talking to Simeon Harris Bulldog nickelback Dogs looking
for their fifth straight win Saturday night, seven thirty against
the University of Nevada. I haven't gotten back and looked
at Utah State schedule last year. Did you play the
wolf Pack last year?
Speaker 14 (48:00):
No?
Speaker 10 (48:00):
No, no, no, I stayed didn't playing Nevattle last year.
Speaker 3 (48:03):
So yeah, so this will be something new for you too.
Speaker 10 (48:07):
Yeah, and will I played him in twenty twenty three.
They have a quarterback number ten. I believe he's still there.
Played against him. Uh huh twenty twenty three. He won
that game. But uh so this will be new for
me though, playing in Bulldog Stadium.
Speaker 3 (48:22):
Amen.
Speaker 2 (48:24):
And you know you said your mom had been telling
you about her alma mater, Fresno State, from the time
year in kindergarten and pendance on your wall and all
that kind of stuff. Now that you've actually been here
wearing the uniform, hanging out with your fellow Bulldogs here
in the red wave cheer at Valley Children's Stadium, has
it Has it lived up to the expectations or the
(48:46):
rep that it had earned before?
Speaker 10 (48:47):
Yeah, one hundred percent. You know, we did our mock
game and back in the fall, early in the fall
and before the season started. We walked from the locker
room down the rent and I could just feel the
feel the chills at a culture, in a tradition here
at Fresno State, without even any fans in the stands.
In our first home game, I would say like, I
(49:09):
was real nervous, you know, and real got a lot
of chills, and fans are loud. And running down that
rent and seeing teams walk up the remp and we
run and chase them up the rems one of the
best things I ever done. It just it gets me
fired up, ready to go. So I love playing here
in front of the railway.
Speaker 2 (49:27):
You can tell, can't you whether you can see his
smile or you're just hearing his smile on the radio.
Simmy and Harris as our guest, will take one final break,
come back with the rest of the program tonight here
till six thirty. If you want to win a prize,
make sure we have your name. If you've got a
question for Simmy and you can send it on the

So that means we'll have the show here Wednesday night
from seven to eight for those of you who come
each and every week next week seven to eight on
Wednesday night, before that Bulldog game at Colorado State this
week they're home against Nevada seven thirty Saturday night. We've
(53:28):
been talking to Simmey and Harris, the first year Bulldog
about that. Simeon, what are you getting from this great
menu at the point tonight?
Speaker 10 (53:35):
I got the steak bites, medium rear steak bites. See
what them hidden?
Speaker 22 (53:40):
You know?
Speaker 3 (53:41):
Are you a mushroom guy?
Speaker 10 (53:42):
Nah?
Speaker 3 (53:43):
They come with some pretty good mushrooms too.
Speaker 10 (53:45):
I'll try it all those out.
Speaker 3 (53:46):
Yeah, and the sauce is fantastic. You can't go wrong
with the steak bites.
Speaker 10 (53:49):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (53:50):
So the last game was at Hawaii.
Speaker 2 (53:51):
You made the game ceiling play on the two point conversion,
and the day before the whole team visited Pearl Harbor,
and for a lot of guys, including a lot of
your coaches, that was their first time ever there, but
not for you. You want to explain, uh, why that
was the case, why you'd been there before.
Speaker 10 (54:11):
Yeah, my dad was stationed in Hawaii at Pearl Harbor
before and he served in the Marine Corps for about
Florida four to six before eight years. And you know
he still walks around the house singing his Marine Corps songs.
So yeah, so I've been there before. It's really it
touched my heart every time I go. And so it's
(54:32):
a blessing.
Speaker 2 (54:33):
And you were telling me he used to actually have
to have guard duty outside the Arizona Memorial, sir, Yes, sir, wow.
And you said he goes around singing the Marine Corps song.
So do you know all the words to the Marine
Corps hill? You put me on the spy Man uh
from the Halls of Montezuma.
Speaker 10 (54:51):
I don't know that one, okay, all right.
Speaker 3 (54:54):
But you know the tune. I'm sure, yeah, yeah, yeah,
yeah yeah.
Speaker 2 (54:57):
And and I just have to imagine that maybe some
of that Marine Corps discipline was enforced around the house.
Speaker 3 (55:04):
You just said, yes, sir, that tells me all I know.
We're there, right. Let's talk about your team a little bit.
Speaker 2 (55:12):
So when you change teams and you get to know
these new guys, I'm sure it's it's not an immediate gel.
But what have you come to appreciate about your teammates,
especially those guys in the secondary that you spend so
much time with.
Speaker 10 (55:25):
Yeah, one of our captains, Cameron Broka, I came here
in January and he just welcomed me in with open arms.
As we know, he's from Fresno. I was new to
Fresno and we had our like winter workout, summer conditioning.
Me and him went at it every day, you know,
competing every day, trying to make each other better. And
he's always holding me accountable. I'm holding him accountable. So
(55:48):
that's one of my favorite guys that played with in
the back end. And then he got a zillion Hamilton
and Jakari Embury on the outside that corner and stand
on me playing Nigla. I gotta stay on the same
page with the corners and the safety as at all time.
So talking to those guys on the field and off
the field, whether is that getting dinner together or something
like that, you know, just building that chemistry since I
got here in Janguary was really a great thing to do.
Speaker 2 (56:09):
Are you guys still gonna be on the same page
after they heard you say that the best athlete on
the team plays Nickel, I.
Speaker 10 (56:16):
Hope the defensive end might not like that. You know
Corey Forman design Jackson, those guys might not like my response,
but you know it's all love love those guys.
Speaker 2 (56:26):
What about on the other side of the ball, because
you spend a lot of time going up against receivers.
You talked about the versatility of your position requires, so
you may be matched up against the receiver or trying
to shed a block from a tight end. Are there
two or three guys that have really challenged you that
when you get lined up against them, you know it's
going to be a challenge.
Speaker 10 (56:46):
Yeah, I mean talking about the tight end room man
coach ference gets those guys fired up and ready to go.
And I got to bring my a game every time
like Jake Tarwater, Richie Anderson cam Beach and those guys
bring it every day. And then go guys in the slot.
Every time Josiah Freeman comes into slot, my antennas are
up because I know they don't put him in the
(57:06):
slot to run something short. He's going deep. And you
know Jordan Brown and Jelil McClain and then Zeke Abbott
he's played really well and guarding him in the slide.
A couple of times he's giving me some work offs.
So so we just out there iron Sharper's iron, and
we make each other better.
Speaker 2 (57:24):
That's the idea. It's glad to hear it's working that way.
And you mentioned that Cam Beacham, you know his dad
was a career marine as well. You guys ever trade
stories about your Marine Corps dads.
Speaker 10 (57:35):
I never knew that.
Speaker 2 (57:36):
Well, I guess now you guys have something to talk about.
We've seen you do a few things on the football
field already. Is there something we haven't seen you do
in a Bulldog uniform that you're looking forward to the
moment when that thing happens.
Speaker 10 (57:50):
I want to get a sack. That's my goal. I
want to come off the edge and get a sack.
And I don't know what celebration I'm gonna do, but uh,
I'm gonna do something.
Speaker 3 (58:02):
It'll come to you in the moment.
Speaker 10 (58:03):
Huh yeah, it come in a moment. I might I
don't know. I mean, I mean blacking out sometimes.
Speaker 4 (58:08):
You know.
Speaker 2 (58:09):
I'm sure that your mother and your auntie might have
some suggestions for a celebration dance.
Speaker 4 (58:13):
Huh yeah.
Speaker 10 (58:14):
She might want me to do Carl will into a
backflip or something. I don't know if I can do that.
Speaker 3 (58:18):
So it's gonna say have you ever tried that?
Speaker 4 (58:20):
Nah?
Speaker 10 (58:20):
I ain't gonna try that.
Speaker 2 (58:22):
You know, we were talking about Henry Ellard earlier, who
should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but
he used to do backflip after he scored in the NFL. Wow,
just go right into it, boom like nothing. We're just
about out of time, Simmy, thanks so much for hanging out.
I hope those steake bites are terrific. Hope the game
is fantastic on Saturday night. What's the number one thing
you're looking forward to at seven thirty on Saturday night?
Speaker 10 (58:44):
Winning? So all we focus on winning a game.
Speaker 2 (58:49):
Sir boy, I think you're scoring a perfect hundred tonight. Man,
you must be doing well in school too.
Speaker 10 (58:55):
Yeah, I am. I'm trying.
Speaker 2 (58:58):
Simmy and Harris number five. You can cheer on them
Saturday night. You can cheer for them all night and
all season long. Dogs are looking for their fifth straight
win seven thirty on Saturday. Our pregame coverage will begin
at five thirty. Thanks again to coach Ens as well,
