Speaker 1 (00:02):
On the Bulldog Sports Network from Learfield. This is the
Bulldog Football Hour, brought to you by Table Mountain Casino.
Welcome to the Table, Pepsi, official soft drink of Fresno
State Athletics, Seed Geek, the official ticketing partner of Fresno
State Athletics, EECU Smarter Banking since nineteen thirty four, and

(00:24):
by bud Late, Easy to Drink, Easy to Enjoy. Now
live from the Point Patio barring Bistro, here's your host,
the Voice of the Bulldogs, Paul Leffler.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Well, hey, it's beautiful evening, isn't it? Great night out
here on the patio of the Point Patio Bar and Bistro.
They've got college football on TV, NBA Basketball on TV.
Some special gifts on the table courtesy of Red Wave
light Logger, which is now on tap here at the
Point Patio Bar at Pistro. We've got surprises to give
away tonight, some gift cards and maybe of coach ns

(00:59):
and coach Tedford side to sign this football in front
of me, an autographed football. Coach Ed says here, We're
going to talk to Jeff Ted for a little later
in the program. Coach been a couple of weeks since
you had a game. What all has happened in these
two weeks. Maybe that's a lot to cover, but give
us the highlight.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
A lot of a lot of practice. We went four
days last week again trying just to prevent Russ from accumulating.
You know, you love by weeks, but sometimes you wish
they were positioned a little bit differently, especially after our
last game. That was about the last thing you wanted
to have, but we had to take advantage of it.

(01:37):
We got out there, we got our young kids again.
We want to continue to develop our young players. We
sell ourselves as a premier developmental program and so that
was critical. But we also feel like we got healthier too.
There's some people that were back in practice this week,
playing at a high level and just trying to continue
to stay positive and continue to coach the details and

(01:58):
the fundamentals of the game. And so that way we're
ready to go on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Saturday twelve thirty don't sleep in. Twelve thirty is the kickoff,
and if you want a tailgate, you're going to have
to get up a little earlier and get out there.
Blackout day, so we're black to the stadium, try to
create that imposing look. The Bulldogs will wear black. It's homecoming,
and at halftime, Jeff Tedford will join the Ring of Honor.
He's joining us here tonight as well. We'll hear from
him in a little bit. You can come join us

(02:24):
here at the point Patti O'barnbistro, northwest corner of Willow
and Knees. And if you can't make it, you can
still send questions and use the XAP in that hashtag
ask fs. We've got a couple questions coming in already.
You know, I want to take you back, coach after
that Colorado State game. I appreciate it. I'm sure a
lot of fans did the way you handled the situation

(02:45):
and the questions because I've been around a lot of coaches.
Some coaches make zero excuses, some make excuses, and some
make excuses while they're saying they're not make excuses, right,
I mean, we've seen all ends of that spectrum. Sure,
and you didn't bat an eyelid. You said, you know
this is on me and we're going to figure it out.
We're going to get to the bottom of it. We're

(03:05):
going to get better. Is that mentality that approach something
that that you learned early on, or is that something
you had to develop over time.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
I think I think you develop over time. I think
it's probably human nature to, you know, try to point
fingers or you know, try to defend yourself extreme ownership.
And so I'm at the top, and so I need
to take most responsibility. And again it starts with me
and a l nd with me. And I feel like

(03:35):
when you become the head football coach that that's a priority.
And I think if your players see that and then
they know that you're on their side, I think you
send a real bad message if you start pointing fingers
as a as the head football coach or any coach.
You know. I used to always when I was a
position coach, I talked in terms of wee or hours,
like we didn't do this because that way, then I

(03:55):
was associated with it as well. It wasn't just our players,
but it was I was making the mistake too, because
either you're coaching it or you're allowing it to happen.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
And I realized, you know the scope of this next
question could get into strategy, and you don't want to
give anything in a way to San Diego state who's
coming in with a lot of momentum Saturday. The Aztecs
are five and one, two and zero in the Mountain West.
The Bulldog's five and two, two and one in the
Mountain West. Whoever wins this game Saturday will become Bowl
eligible and still be on a path toward a Mountain
West title game. When you said, you know, you're going

(04:26):
to take some time to examine things, are there some
things that cropped up, you know that maybe you hadn't
seen until you looked with a different lens as far
as why there was such an abrupt change in that
game and how we're going to get back on track
on Saturday, Well.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Yeah, you wish it was about as clear as mud, right,
you know, on that Friday night, there was just some
things that were that I saw that I hadn't seen
in the previous five games, and so did we get
away maybe you know, sometimes winning winning can cover up
something as well, and so it was, you know, Sunday's

(05:03):
conversation with the staff was more about, Hey, let's really
let's get it to We've had a plan for the
first seven games, we we've executed it. Now let's really
critique it and what do we need to get back
to what what allowed us to have great success and
get and create this a little bit of a mini
run there. Yeah, well now we need to how can
we get back on track? And I think you know

(05:26):
I said it before, when when you have moments like this,
you need to lean on the things that got you there.
And we got back to some fundamentals. We got back
to a little more tackling, We got back to a
little more fundamentals. We got back to some more good
on good in practice. Hey, maybe one less period, you know,
executing or having our scout team show us what the
opponent was doing. But let's get good versus good, and

(05:47):
let's create some competitive moments.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
You know, I was listening to one of the interviews
with coach Hedford last week and he was talking about
the time his chin got split open because they were
going live in practice on quarterbacks. You know, I taking
it that far?

Speaker 3 (06:00):
You No, we have not. We have We have not
taken it that far. But I know there's defensive guys
that wish we could. Yeah, they're sure are.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
And one thing when it just comes to personnel, I
mean the last two games, you didn't have your original
starting offensive line. You had somebody missing different guys those
two weeks. I think you're going to have that original
line healthy for Saturday afternoon.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
That's that's what we're hoping, you know, as of right now,
we're we're trending that direction again. We've got to get
through tomorrow and make sure people are healthy and in
a good place. But uh no, that's always exciting. But
at the same time, you know, the people we had
in there had had had number of starts under their belts,
so you know that that's that's not the reason why,

(06:46):
you know, poor execution and just not being prepared. Uh
you know, to go on the road and win a game.
You know, when you go on the road, you got
to pack your defense, you got to pack your run game,
and you got to pack your special teams and and
and I think we we forget out to pack a
couple of those things.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Well. And now it's time to look forward to San
Diego State. But in speaking about the offensive line, that
was a question that came in on the x app
using that hashtag ask FS. This is from at FS
Dogfather on the x app. That's pretty good handle. He
wants to know what your philosophy is on recruiting linemen.
Are there any particular attributes that are a necessity in

(07:27):
your eyes?

Speaker 3 (07:28):
There's probably a number of them. I'll try to give
the the quick version of it, but long length is
a must, you know. That's one thing I don't want
to compromise is the ability to have length, because again,
just if you have a bigger, bigger body to work with,

(07:50):
they're going to grow into a bigger version of themselves.
And we got to give We need to give Coach
Ward and his staff as big a canvas as we
can in the weight room, Kelly, our nutritionists and our
nutrition staff, so we can build them athletic. I'd like
I'd love to get you know, multi sport athletes, you know,
lineman guys. I said it when I first got here,

(08:11):
Guys that play basketball, wrestle, track and field. I want
to see him do multiple things because that athleticism we can,
we can maintain that, we can bring that to the
offensive line and then you know, hopefully we see him
in a camp or something where there's a proven level
of physicality and toughness that we can rely on. It's
still a line of scrimmage game, and you have to

(08:34):
be good upfront. If you want to have, in my opinion, sustainability,
it has to start with being really good up front
on the offensive line and in the defensive line as well.

Speaker 2 (08:44):
Now I don't know if this is a fair question,
but in hearing you emphasize those two different things, the
length and the toughness. If you had to choose only one,
would you rather have a guy without length but has
the toughness or a guy with the toughness that doesn't
have the length.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
I take the guy with the toughness that doesn't have
in life.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
You didn't think about that too long?

Speaker 3 (09:02):
No, no, because that's a commodity that it's hard to
find out there. And so yeah, that's why we got
to do a really good job of evaluating kids. We
got to get to know him. We've got to peel
back layers. We need to see him in different competitive
moments to see do they fit what Fresno state and
what the Bulldogs are required, what we require, you know,

(09:24):
from a recruiting standpoint.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
He's coach matt Ends. He's here at the point Patio
Bar and Bistro, northwest corner of Willow and n'es. We're
here till six thirty coach Jeff Tedford is here as well.
His big night is Saturday. We're big afternoon is Saturday
when he joins the Ring of Honor. So come see us,
you might win a prize, you'll eat some great food.
You've got some special prizes on your table from Red
Wave light Logger, and we're going to have a great evening.

(09:46):

Something our dadt taught us is that dentistry isn't just
about treating teeth, but helping people, and this is exactly
the culture and feeling we get at FFP.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
We welcome back through the Bulldog Football Hour. It's a
beautiful evening at the point, I thought it was going
to be dark and cool. Man, it's perfect. I got
a hoodie on it. I don't even need it. I'm
going to roll these sleeps up here. It's too nice
out here at the point. Tim's chomping on some onion
rings over there. Tom's got his wedge slid. What else
you want me to do? Play by play of all
the meals out here? What's coach EN's going with tonight?
Off the point menu? I wonder not sure.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
I'll have to look at I have to reevaluate because.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
You had a five game winning streak going, and that's
not a mini run, by the way, as you said
it earlier. That's a pretty big deal, isn't it? Win
in five straight games? I think we'd be excited if
they pulled that off again. So you had the spicy
chicken wrap for the five game win streak. But it's
but it failed you. Okay, it's out, never again or
just for a while.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
It's gonna twenty six.

Speaker 2 (13:48):
Okay, so you haven't evaluated the options yet, not wait
till okay.

Speaker 3 (13:53):
I didn't have to look at it. I haven't looked
at the menu for you know, for a while now.

Speaker 2 (13:57):
The menu has actually changed since the last time you
looked at the menu. That is too but it's a
great menu here at the point, Patti O'barnbistro, we'd love
to have you join us northwest corner of Willow and
Knees and a little while. Coach Jeff Tedford's going to
jump on with us as well. He'll be honored with
the Ring of Honor Saturday, which hopefully will be the
first sellout of the season. It's already close blackout game.
The new black uniforms. I know that's not the most

(14:18):
important thing, coach, but what do you think of this
old school dog with the sailor hat that's going to
be on the side of these black helmets.

Speaker 3 (14:24):
I was all about it, yeah, I was. I was
a big proponent of going that direction. I thought it
was a good look. I didn't know what would look
as good on the you know, the gray scale on
the black helmet, but I was pleased with how it looked.
I know our players were too.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
You were talking earlier about recruiting o lignemen looking for
length and that toughness. Does the logo look tough enough
for you?

Speaker 3 (14:45):
I think so. I think that's good.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
I'll a little growl to it. Yeah, So the Bulldogs
will bust that out on Saturday twelve thirty, kickoff at
Valley Children Stadium. Our pregame coverage will start at ten thirty.
If you've got a question for the coach, you can
write it on a slip of paper here at the
point in fact, that's how you can edit a win
our prizes as well, or you can come join us.
If you can't come join us, you can send in

(15:08):
your questions on the XAP with that hashtag ask fs.
Let's talk about your opponent, coach, because San Diego State
has had a resurgence this year under coach Lewis, off
to a five and one start. They're perfect in the
Mountain West at two and zero. They still have the
kind of defense that San Diego State has been known
for the last couple decades, but there's some potency to
this offense this year as well.

Speaker 3 (15:28):
No, they're well rounded football team. All three phases. They
do a really good job and it's impressive, you know
what coach Lewis has done there. They've were i think
three and nine, four and eight a year ago and
you know, just getting their system in and then you
just see that they have just continued to do what
they do and improving. So they've they've done a great

(15:49):
job in recruiting and getting the right people to fit
what they're doing. Offensively, Defensively, they're playing at a high level.
They have a tremendously talented quarterback, skilled position kids. Defensively,
they probably have two draft picks, you know, their defensive end,
and then they have a corner on the perimeter that
I think is they're projecting as a third rounder right now.

(16:10):
So they've done a really good job and it's gonna
be very competitive. It's gonna be a battle. We're gonna
have to be ready to play early. We got to
start fast, and it's gonna be a four quarter game.
We're gonna need the fans to be involved.

Speaker 2 (16:22):
And the Bulldogs are undefeated at home so far in
twenty twenty five. Chance to keep it that way Saturday
at twelve thirty against the Aztecs. It's also the first
of three trophy games on your schedule with this one,
Boise State with the milk can, San Jose State with
the v Have you spent much time looking at that
oil can yet?

Speaker 3 (16:40):
We talked about it today a little bit. We talked
about it on Monday. We've kind of addressed it when
we're at practice. So our kids are excited about it.
You hear them, you know, talking about the oil can
and and and then you tie it in with the blackout.
I think they're excited and they're excited to play, you know,
they know San Diego State is receiving some vote top
twenty five type team, and I think they're they're excited

(17:03):
about the challenge and looking forward to getting them at
home here.

Speaker 2 (17:06):
And I've heard the fans, you know, giving their reactions
to a twelve thirty kickoff. What about you? You kind
of like the fact you're not sitting around all day
waiting for something to happen.

Speaker 3 (17:16):
That has been one of the biggest adjustments I've had
to make being here for the most most of my career.
It feels like it's been one thirty, two thirty games
very seldom or if not, eleven o'clock games, and so
very seldom did you have seven thirty games. When you're
walking off the field, it's eleven o'clock already, But I'm
excited about this one. I think it's gonna be It

(17:38):
looks like the weather's going to be seventy to seventy
four degrees. You know, there's really I don't think any
precipitation in the forecast. There's not a reason not to
be there.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
I couldn't say it any better. Not a reason not
to be there, and lots of reasons to be there,
exactly to see the Bulldogs try to stay perfect at home,
to maybe be part of the first sellout of the season,
to be part of the blackout game with uniforms that
I've never been worn before, and to celebrate coach Tedford
at halftime. We're going to talk to him in a
little bit, but let's talk about the guy who is

(18:09):
occupying the position that coach Tedford played quarterback, and he
dealt with it right. His most famous victory was the
great comeback in the Cow Bowl where he turned the
ball over in the first half and they were down
by three touchdowns. They rallied to win twenty nine to
twenty eight. You've heard everything that anyone can say about EJ. Warner.

(18:30):
What's your perspective on how he's doing and what your
team needs from him in this game Saturday against the Astacs.

Speaker 3 (18:36):
Well, I think EJ's done a really good job of
finding the intermediate the checkdowns. You know, there's just been
and he knows it, and we've addressed it, we've talked.
But it's been a handful of just bad decision making
at times. And again that falls onto how can we
practice how do we generate those moments where we don't

(18:57):
go back to bad decision making and we make the
appropriate decision, which is either take off and run with
it and get what you can and get out of bounds,
or throw it out of bounds and let's live to
play another down. It's okay to end every series with
a kick some way, somehow, field goal, a pat or
a punt that can be winning football. We need him
to continue to help us complimentary football. For us to

(19:19):
be the best version of ourselves right now, we have
to be really good on all three phases. And then
that includes him, you know, being able to execute and
operate the offense at a high level.

Speaker 2 (19:29):
And one of the things that might be working in
the right direction for the offense. Is if you compare
here Game eight Saturday against the Aztecs versus Game one,
there are more proven offensive weapons for him to distribute
the ball to. Josiah Freeman's coming off back to back
weeks with two touchdowns. No Bulldog receiver had done that since.
A guy who's in the NFL now Jalen Cropper Jalen

(19:50):
Moreno Cropper as he finished his career as in twenty
twenty two. And the guy who's really impressed me the
last few weeks is Big number eighty eight Richie Anderson.
When when nobody else is open, he seems to be open.

Speaker 3 (20:02):
Richie's a does an awesome job, tremendous Uh, not just
in the run game, but in the past game. Uh.
You know, you can't can't say enough about him, gets
banged up, him him in that whole room you talk
about Richie, Jake cam you know, three guys that that
that really have elevated their value doing multiple things. Jake

(20:28):
tar Waters on every special team as well, you know,
and Brock Liam who got banged up early in the year.
Is A is A is going to be a tremendous
tight end when he gets healthy and gets back. You know,
we really feel like there's some depth in that room
right now, but we got to continue to use somebody.
Going back to what you said, Richie has been really
good for us and we got to continue to utilize him.

(20:48):
He's he's tough to defend.

Speaker 2 (20:50):
He is you were talking about multi sport athletes earlier.
I've seen him post up like a big man on
the basketball court a couple of Times's right, we're here
at the point Pattio Bar and Bistro. It's the Dog
Football Hour. Coach EN's with us. Now, Coach Tedford's going
to join us. For the next segment, we'll have Coach
Tedford talk about coach Nce, coach Ence talk about coach Tedford,
and if you've got questions for either one, send them
our way on the xAPP with that hashtag ask fs Well,

(21:13):
I asked you about the quarterback some of those receiving options.
But let's talk about your run game for a minute,
because it's been different guys at different times. Right, Bryce
and Donaldson has had some moments. Speedy Luke is electric
when he gets the ball in space. Brandon Ramirez helped
to finish that win. Against Nevada ram Man as we're
all calling him now. Any concern that guys aren't getting

(21:38):
enough of a rhythm, if they go in and out
too much, how do you handle the reps that those
guys are getting.

Speaker 3 (21:45):
Well, I'm only anticipating you're asking that question because the
last game we played, we got knocked out of the
run game, and so we didn't really run the ball.
Ver we ran it twenty two times. There was the
design run game. You know, we preferred year around thirty
to thirty five. So I think again, if we play
complimentary football, we we execute better. Those numbers elevate, you know,

(22:08):
we continue to challenge our one we there. We have
standards or or benchmarks that we want to get touches
for each of those guys, because they all possess a
ton of talent, and they all have different skill set
and when you look at the three of them, uh,
they all can do some different things, and they all
do things really well. But you know, I think one
a lot of it depends on how the game is

(22:30):
being played. How are people defending us, who has a
hot hand at the time, and and and and how
well are we playing up front? I mean, there's a.
There's a lot of what ifs that go into that.
But the thing that we continue to stress through our guys,
and it's everybody in the football team. How good a
football player can you be without the ball too? Right?
Are you going to are you willing to make the
big block and pick up protection? Are you on special teams?

Speaker 10 (22:53):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (22:53):
You know, Speedy's had some some really big returns for us.
You know, Bryson's been in there on third down and
been great in protection, same with you know, and all
three of them have had catch us at different times too.
So we need to continue to take advantage of of
a deep running back room. And that's that's our intent,
believe me. You know, we wanted to, you know, be
stubborn in the run game, but again, the last game

(23:15):
we played just didn't allow us to do that.

Speaker 2 (23:19):
And you know, certainly don't want to leave out Elijah Gilliam,
who has more touchdowns in his career than all of them,
or Jonathan Arsenal who's shown some promise. But we'll s
that run game goes Saturday twelve thirty is win. It'll
kick off of Valley Children Stadium the Bulldogs and the Aztecs.
If you're not here yet, hurry on up. Somebody's gonna
win a gift card to the Bulldog Locker. Actually two
of you are, and someone's going to win a football

(23:39):
that might have coach Ens and Coach Tedford's signatures on it.
I think that would be a pretty cool momento. It's
the Ring of Honor. Saturday twelve thirty is when it
kicks off. Halftime is when Jeff Tedford will have his
name added to that elite list and he'll join us
when we come back. Come hang out at the Point

Welcome back to the Point Patiobarn Bistro, home of the
Bulldog Football Hour. We'll be here next Thursday as well,
from five thirty to six thirty. But next Thursday, coach
Jeff Tedford won't be here. He's going to join us
here in a moment. Coach Matt Ensis here. We've been
talking about the matchup with San Diego State and his
five and two Bulldogs who need one win to achieve

(27:41):
Bowl eligibility, and coach we've talked about fair amount of
big picture stuff. But do you have for your players
a visual representation or a defined list of progressive goals
for the season, and where does Bowl eligibility fit into that?

Speaker 3 (27:59):
No, not necessarily, it's more kind of weekly goals, weekly accomplishments,
you know, talk about just trying to take care of
business every weekend and get that win, and and if
we can continue to stack those, then we'll probably start
checking off some other boxes.

Speaker 2 (28:16):
It's all about the focus. So we're gonna have coach
Tedford come join us. I'm sure that's the name that
you heard for a long time in college football circles.

Speaker 3 (28:25):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (28:25):
What was the thing that you saw from a distance
and said, hey, there's something special about that guy and
what he's done.

Speaker 19 (28:31):
Well.

Speaker 3 (28:31):
I have some good friends of mine that have worked
for coach Tedford before, some right here at Fresno State,
and just you know, the detail, the caliber of coaching
that he was able to instill in the players. You know,
you look at the lineage of quarterback play, it speaks
for itself. And then just you know, all things bulldog.

(28:55):
I mean, a player, an assistant coach, a head football
coach that had tremendous success along each and every stop. Uh,
you know, something that you got to really be impressed
with and and and love the fact that he still
wants to be part of it, still wants to be around,
still has a number of relationships with you know, current
members of our of our team, and so when he

(29:15):
comes by, you can see those guys light up just
because he can tell what the impact he had through
the recruiting process and their development.

Speaker 2 (29:22):
And you know one thing that I noticed when you
came in, and this is something I've seen a lot
of coaching transitions, right and a lot of sports, and
I've seen different coaches handle it different ways. When you're
the new guy and you're not from here, there's always
this this testing period, this vetting, this, Hey, we want
to see who you really are. Are you for real?
Do you really want to be here? And those kinds
of things. And you made a concerted effort to make

(29:46):
it clear that alumni were welcome, that you wanted to
actually get to know him. And it seems to me
it did a little studying too, to to kind of
brush up on the history of Bulldog football. Why was
that so important to you?

Speaker 3 (29:56):
Well, I think you have to to create continuity, to
create alignment. You know, you need your alumni. They're the
foundation of your football program, and you know they're they're
a prideful group. They want to know that the person
who's ultimately responsible for the program has a vision and
has an idea and and appreciates, you know, the program

(30:17):
and appreciates the little things about the program that make
it unique. And I felt like that was probably the
best way for me to get a feel of Fresno,
Fresno State University, the football program, all the traditions, just
the things that make it what it is. And so
by diving into our former players and inviting them to practice,
making sure they knew that they were always welcome, I

(30:39):
felt like it was a way to you know, knock
down some of the some of the barriers. Hey, I'm
all in. I want you guys to be all in
right now too.

Speaker 2 (30:49):
Coach Tedford is getting reacquainted with some of the fans
who've come out. He's going to join us here in
a moment. And you know, not to belabor that point,
but a less secure coach, a more insecure coach might
feel threatened by having Pat Hill show up at practice
a few times a week or having coached Hedford wander in.
You seem to really enjoy it when these guys come around.

(31:11):
What does it meant to you to have them there
supporting you in this team?

Speaker 3 (31:16):
Well, I one, it tells you how important this program
is and the experience that they had here must have
been really good, a valued experience, and so that's what
we're trying to provide our players right now. But I
think the other thing is, and maybe this is just
this is a matt Ens thing is you know, veteran
coaches like coach Tedford, like coach you can learn a
lot of things still from those guys. I mean good football,

(31:38):
still good football, and coaches that believe in the fundamentals
the techniques. You know that that solves a lot of problems.
And you know, it's not about memorizing playbooks, but it's
about you know, teaching the basics and being great at
simple things. And I think coach would agree with that.
If if you can't do that, it really doesn't matter
you know, what you do on third down, you know,
if you can't do the basic things really well. And

(32:00):
I think sometimes in this, in this in the game
the way it is now, we lose sight of the fundamentals.
And it's all about, you know, how can we you know,
come up with an elaborate scheme, but we need to
come up with an appropriate one where we can execute
it at a high level.

Speaker 2 (32:15):
Well said he's coach Matt Anson. Now joining US is
coach Jeff Tedford. You just put that headset back on.
You feel like you're coaching a game again.

Speaker 10 (32:22):
Yeah, a little flashbacks pulled up in the parking lot.
I told Don, I'm like, this is flashbacks.

Speaker 2 (32:28):
Ye had.

Speaker 3 (32:29):
Good.

Speaker 10 (32:29):
It's great to be with you because you are the
true professional, and I've always appreciate everything you do, so
it's great to be here with coach Inns. I appreciate
you doing a phenomenal job, and so it's great to
be here.

Speaker 2 (32:41):
Thank you. Well, it's great to have you, and I
know the fans are going to be ready to cheer
for you on Saturday afternoon. It's homecoming too, so a
lot of guys may have thought about coming. I have
a feeling some of them are coming to hang out
with you too. Do you have a feel for how
many of your old teammates or players are going to
be here Saturday?

Speaker 10 (32:59):
You know, I don't know. I know originally quite a few,
but then the twelve thirty kick kind of pillow wrenches
of some of their travel plans. I know Henry Ellerd.
I'm excited to see him, but he doesn't land now
till like eleven o'clock. So but we'll see him after
the game. But I'm just happy he's coming. But you know,

(33:19):
when I think back on it, it's forty four years
ago that I've seen some of these guys. Wow, I'm
really old. I'm really old, and you know, but playing
in the first full year that stadium and then fall
On obviously Fallen football or Bullog football for that many

(33:39):
years has been very exciting. The pride and tradition that
has has withstood the test of time here and the
coach Intz is continuing with We all have a great
deal of pride in that, and so I'm gonna really
enjoy seeing all those guys that we played with, and

(34:00):
I think some of the players that we coach are
going to be back. So it's going to be an
exciting weekend to watch the Bulldogs get a victory vers
San Diego State.

Speaker 2 (34:09):
Yeah, you were a part of some pretty big wins
against San Diego State. We'll talk about that maybe in
a little bit. Coach ants for those who don't know
who don't get to be in the stadium, you know,
a couple hours before kickoff, when you guys go in
there as a team and walk from the north end
zone all the way down to the south end zone.
You want to tell them what you guys say and

(34:30):
chant and repeat marching.

Speaker 3 (34:33):
The whole production is the March to victory.

Speaker 2 (34:36):
Uh huh.

Speaker 3 (34:37):
And there's a number of sayings that are important internally
within the program, things that we've kind of they're up
on the wall even in Grant in Grand re Form
now in the locker room and things like that, And
just I think it's a quick reminder of who we are.
It gets everyone kind of refocused in the morning. I

(34:58):
love it. I'm a coach. Something that you started the
march to victory, yeah yeah. And and something that we
that that was kind of, you know, one of those
things that was a non negotiable when I sat down
with some of the leaders on the football team or
some of the men on the football team, is hey,
we need to continue to do that. And and and I
love the fact that we do it. And so far
we've allowed some of our former players who have been

(35:20):
who are on the staff right now to lead the
March to victory. Uh just because I think it's it's
great that we have a former Bulldogs leading the current
Bulldogs down the field and then and then a couple
of words, and then and then the Lord's prayer and
then we're out of there for a pregame meal. But
tomorrow Saturday, we're gonna do it even earlier than normal. Uh,
just so we stay out of uh we we keep

(35:42):
San Diego stayed out of our business.

Speaker 2 (35:44):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (35:45):
You know, this is a it's a team thing and
it needs to be only the people that are are
helping us win ball games need to be there.

Speaker 2 (35:52):
And one of the things you guys say is the
pride and tradition that Bulldog football cannot be interested to
the timid or the week. You say it with a
little more passion than that.

Speaker 3 (36:02):
Well, there's yeah, one hundreds some guys saying it. So
but it's good, you know. And it's good that those
guys you know, chant and and it's good. It's an
impactful moment. And to see them arm in arm as
they walk down the field is a positive.

Speaker 2 (36:18):
About the first time you heard that.

Speaker 10 (36:19):
That gets me fired up. Just to hear those words
gets me fired up because it's true. It's not just
about this team or last year's team or five years ago.
It's it's the whole Bulldog football program dating back to
a long, long way, right, so we all are representatives

(36:42):
of the people who came before us, who wore the
bulldog helmet, went down that ramp and put on the
line for this program. And so I'm excited that he
has continued to to follow through with that mantra, you know,
because I think it means a lot to the players,
and so that fires me. I didn't even know that

(37:04):
they will continue to do that, but I'm excited to
hear that because it really is it's the prime tradition
of Bulldog football cannot be entrusted at Timid of the
Week was a coach twenty thing, right. It was about toughness,
It was about what we stand for as a program.
And he started it, and you know, I think and

(37:29):
then Pat Hill, you know, kept going with it and
made bulldog football relevant nationally through the toughness of what
we've always had here as a program. And coach chance
is there's no better person than coach chants to continue
that tradition. And so I'm very happy to hear that

(37:49):
they searched that coach.

Speaker 2 (37:51):
And Coachance, Yeah, you clap for that. Before I let
you go take a look at the menu here at
the point that you haven't seen it about a month
and a half and decide what fantastic item you're going
to have. You and I will talk pregame on Saturday
before that twelve thirty kick But is there anything else
you want the fans to know about what this game
means in the big picture and what you're hoping to

(38:13):
see Saturday with that twelve thirty kickoff.

Speaker 3 (38:15):
Well, you know, it's as I told the team this
morning kind of in our team meeting before practice, is
you know, what an opportunity and what an opportunity for
us to come out start fast, and and and and
you know, really get after a good football team. You know,
we need to we need to level up, we need
to refocus, We need to we need to start the

(38:36):
day fast. Our fan base can be a huge piece
of that. I'm sure coach Tedford would agree that. There's
not very many places, you know, like Valley Children's you
know stadium when it's rocking it is. It is a
one of a kind and we need people to be engaged.
We need them, you know, to you know, anytime San
Diego State has the ball, they can you can do

(38:57):
the wave, you can do whatever you want to do.
Let's just interfere with their communication. Let's let's let's make
it tough on our opponent as much as we can, but.

Speaker 2 (39:05):
Don't do the way when the Bulldogs are on offense.

Speaker 3 (39:08):
I didn't say that necessarily, but a lot.

Speaker 10 (39:10):
Of people have go ahead, go ahead, you could say.

Speaker 1 (39:13):
I used to say it, Yeah.

Speaker 10 (39:15):
Be quiet, we'll only have the ball, please, But when
they have the ball first, second, third down, it doesn't matter.
I was getting with Paul last week about first and
second down. You know we're kind of quiet. I always
knew when they're either throwing out free T shirts or
there's a pizza giveaway, because they were loud. Right, we
need to be fired up every single down. We need

(39:38):
to retain and have the oil can that's in our facility.
That's what this thing is all about. There's a tremendous
rivalry here. That oil can is a great, great piece
of significance for what this is all about. And it
would be so awesome, And I know coach Ence will

(40:00):
have them prepared and we want to carry that oil
can off the fields in that game because those players
will remember that for their whole life exactly. So let's
bring it. Let's let's bring it. Let's bring it.

Speaker 2 (40:13):
He's coaching us up right now. Well, coach as thanks
a lot. I hope you find a great menu item
there from the point and we'll see you Saturday with
hopefully the first cell out of the air.

Speaker 3 (40:22):
I love it. Thank you, guys, Coach. I appreciate you.

From coach ants a couple of you cent questions in
for coach answer right as he was segueing off, so
we'll save those for next week. We've got coach Tedford
now because Saturday is his big day joining the Ring
of Honor at Fresno State. That'll happen at halftime, so
don't disappear at halftime. That's going to be an unforgettable moment.
And every time we did it while Coach Tedford was coaching,

(44:09):
he was always in the locker room with his team.
So I don't think he's ever gotten to be unless
I'm forgetting something. Have you ever been there at the
stadium when someone was put into the Ring of Honor?

Speaker 10 (44:17):
I never have. I knew it was going on. Yeah,
But even the year that we brought back our fortieth
anniversary for our team of eighty two I didn't even
get to hang out with them, you know, because I
was coming down the ramp and going back up. So,
you know, always been engaging in the coaching piece. And

(44:40):
so I can't wait for this weekend for the guys
that come back and reminisce about all the special times
and look back forty four years, I'm kind of old.
Not you, my teammates, that's forty four years ago, but
when you take a look at not only that, but

(45:00):
be an assistant football coach here and a head football
coach here, and all the people and all the relationships
that we've been so fortunate to have over our years
as a Bulldog. And when you say pride and tradition,
it spans a long time, a long a long time.
So I can't wait to see a lot of people.

Speaker 2 (45:21):
And you said you're getting old, I just thought it.
You know, if this week's game is October twenty fifth,
and we're gonna be like a week away from your birthday,
aren't we.

Speaker 10 (45:31):
You're amazing. You have like a your mind is a trap. Yeah,
one week later it would be forty four years Yeah,
so I will. My birthday is November.

Speaker 2 (45:43):
Two, And the Dogs had some success on your birthday,
and you mentioned forty years after the eighty two team
that went eleven and one. That year twenty twenty two,
you had a pretty memorable game against this week's opponent,
San Diego State. So here's my question for you, coach.
We've got questions coming in on the X app, but
I think this might be the toughest question to answer.

(46:04):
If you just gauged it by how many people have
told you they were there, which game had more fans?
The Cow Bowl come back in nineteen eighty two or
the San Diego State comeback in twenty twenty two.

Speaker 10 (46:19):
That's a good question. I would have to say the
eighty two come back against Bawling Green because we were
down twenty eight to seven going in the fourth quarter,
and as I remember, I didn't have a chance to
look up very much because I was going to focus
on what was going on between the lines. But it
seemed like the stadium had emptied out. But over the years,

(46:42):
over forty years, I swear there were more people that
said they stayed for the game that we're actually at
the game. Right, But the San Diego State game that
was this date coming.

Speaker 2 (46:59):
Up, but it was that year, right, you said forty
years after eighty two, so it was twenty twenty two. Yeah, really, yeah.

Speaker 10 (47:05):
Yeah, So that was an unreal comeback. I mean, who
would ever imagine that you score fifteen points in thirteen seconds, right?
And the odd thing about it is on Monday, I
had two stints put into my heart. I was back.
I was back on Wednesday. So I wouldn't say that

(47:27):
was the doctor's recommendation for how to come back after
one of those things happening, right, And so it was.
It was unreal, you know. I the execution of the
players and the belief and the players, which is really
no different than the cowboyl When you're down twenty eight
to seven going into the fourth quarter, you have to

(47:49):
rely on belief and trust in one another that you're
gonna pull the game out, just to keep battling. And
that happened in eighty two, and it happened in the
San Diego State game when Jake was a quarterback, and
we scored those fifteen points in thirteen seconds.

Speaker 3 (48:06):
You know.

Speaker 2 (48:07):
And I heard you mention that the other day that
the Monday of that week you had had two stints
put in and of course you know later on there
was used to shared more after that game about what
you've gone through healthwise. But if I had known all that,
I don't think I would have said in the moment
that the Bulldogs actually came back, scored fifteen points in
thirteen seconds and won that game. I think what I

(48:27):
said at the time was the Bulldogs were dead on
the table and they brought out the defibrillator. That would
have been really insensitive for me to say if I
had known everything.

Speaker 10 (48:36):
That was right on point. You know, That's that's how
you are, Paul, that's how excellent you are.

Speaker 2 (48:43):
Well, let's not get carried away. I'm just I'm glad
you're good and the Bulldogs are good. And one of
the questions that came in on the x app was
someone You've been asked over the years so much about
quarterbacks because your reputation in developing quarterbacks and identifying quarterback
talent has been talked about a lot. So this was
the dog Father on the x APP and he said,

(49:05):
what were some things you looked for in a quarterback
recruit and do you have any games or tricks that
you'd use to help them with the cerebral part of
playing that position because we all see the arm strength,
the escapability and all that. But between the years is
a big part of quarterback.

Speaker 10 (49:22):
That's most of it. Between the years. So when in
evaluating a quarterback, there's a lot of things you can't
see because you watch it on film, right, But it's
about mental and physical toughness. It's about intelligence, it's about competitiveness,
it's about escape dimension, and it's about a natural ball

(49:46):
delivery some type of Now, we always thought we could
change a delivery or mechanics of a quarterback, but all
those other things are very internal and you don't really know,
you know. So you try to watch quarterbacks in there
two minute drill in high school. You try to get
to know him the best you can, but you never
really know. It's not exact science, right, But when you

(50:09):
are able to get those guys that have all that,
and I am just blessed over my career to have
those guys, you know, six first round draft picks, other
quarterbacks that weren't first round draft picks, but Billy Volk
was one of them. I mean, I don't think Billy
gets recognized enough for what he did for Bulldog football,

(50:33):
but he was an amazing player for US and went
on had a long career in the NFL. But the
quarterback position, yes, it's all about the mental part of
the game, you know, because you hopefully establish the fundamentals
and the techniques throughout the offseason, the training, all that

(50:54):
kind of stuff. But the quarterback position is so critical
because they're a coach on the field. They have to
manage so many things, the clock, the game situation, whatever
it may be, it's critical, right and so when you
get special guys that can do that, then your team
is so much better. And you know, you take Jay

(51:17):
Cane or you take Marcus mcmayan. You know, the years
that we won the conference championship, those guys were unbelievable
of that, you know, and it wasn't just talent, it
was the mental capacity to run our offense. And their
job is really to put all the other ten players

(51:38):
on the field at the time in a position to
be successful. And that means from the protection to the formation,
the protection, calling the plays clear and confident, and making
sure everybody knows what they're doing, getting the ball off
on time. I think a quarterback position in football, whether
it be college football or NFL, is the hardest position

(52:02):
to play in sports. There's so much going on mentally physically,
and then you got all these people coming at you.

Speaker 2 (52:09):
They want to take your head off.

Speaker 10 (52:10):
I want to take your head off, right, So we
have just been very blessed with really special people who
played that position.

Speaker 2 (52:21):
Amen. I saw another one on the other day. Danny
Robinson came to our basketball scrimmage and one of my
friends gave to the idea. He said, with all these
guys back in town now, Coach Hedford's here, the car
brothers are back, maybe we can get Trent Dilferd back.
Wouldn't it be great to have a photo of all
the Bulldog quarterbacks together.

Speaker 10 (52:38):
It would be great.

Speaker 2 (52:39):
Maybe we can pull that off.

Speaker 10 (52:40):
So it would be great because got a chance to
recruit David and coach him for a year, and Derek
was a little five year old out there throwing his
nerve football around and so and But I don't want
to forget Billy Bullock. I think that's a guy who
went on to have a great career in the NFL

(53:01):
and did really good things for the Bulldog football program.
Very highly, highly competitive. But we've had a tradition, you know.
I've been asked this last week a lot of questions
about which make you reflect on a lot of things, right,
all the way back from when we played in eighty
one to eighty two and all that kind of thing,
And it just makes me reflect on all the people

(53:23):
that are involved with making something like this honor that
they're going to give me so special and they all
played a significant role in it, and all these players
and all the coaches and all the support staff and
all that kind of stuff, right, but all of these
guys to remember the stories about how we brought them

(53:47):
through things and how we learned together and how we
grew and then the success that they had and now
that they're older, how they're still successful in life, which
is our ultimate goal as a coach is to make
sure that it's our successful in.

Speaker 2 (54:03):
Life, and there are a lot of those success stories.
We're almost out of time. We're going to take a
quick break. A couple final thoughts from coach Tedford when
we come back. Be there Saturday to celebrate his legacy
at halftime and to cheer the Bulldogs on too bull eligibility.
Maybe it'll be the first sellout. It's going to be
a blackout game. It kicks off at twelve thirty, right,
back with the rest of the Bulldog Football Hour on

Speaker 2 (57:34):
Just a couple of minutes left here at the Bulldog
Football Hour. We heard from coach ants earlier. We have
coach Tedford with us for a couple of minutes, and
I want to give him a chance to share what's
on his heart. Real quick question. First, coach, you know
he went into the cal Bears Hall of Fame last week.
Fresno State puts you in the Ring of Honor this week.
Have you heard anything from like Warren High School or
Sorito's College lately? Are they doing.

Speaker 10 (57:53):
Anything for you? No, that happened a few years ago, Okay,
But what I want to say is this is I'm
so honored about both of these and duxies. But what
it really does for me is it makes me reflect
on the past. While I was coaching, you don't get
a chance to reflect very often, right, But these things

(58:16):
have given me the opportunity to reflect. And I look
back on the former Bulldogs that are not with us anymore,
that played with us, like Ed Carter and Rocky Costello
and Tom Neville and of course or Otis Tolbert who
perished in the Pentagon on nine to eleven. Right, it

(58:37):
makes you think of all the people that were a
part of your life that you never had a chance
to reflect on before. And so it gives me a
real opportunity to appreciate all the people that were involved
in this. And this doesn't happen without everyone, right, This
is a lot of great people who along the way

(58:59):
have been a huge help and making anything like this
even possible. Teammates, coaches, support staff, the whole group, right,
and so I'm so blessed to be surrounded by all
those people through my career, and obviously my wife Donna,
who was so awesome through my career as I was

(59:19):
committed to the job. She was phenomenal still is phenomenal.
And I mean, we're so happy right now that you
know where we have the chance to finally catch up
and do things together because even when I was there physically,
I was, I was, I didn't do a really good

(59:40):
job of being there or being present mentally, and so
we're having the time of our life right now. I
couldn't be more blessed to have a wife like Donna.

Speaker 2 (59:50):
Hey man, I hope it's a special moment for both
of you and the whole Red Wave on Saturday afternoon,
twelve thirty kickoff halftime is when we get to cheer
for coach Tedford in the ring of honor. Coach, Thanks,
