Speaker 1 (00:02):
On the Bulldogs Sports Network from Learfield. This is the
Bulldog Football Hour, brought to you by Table Mountain Casino.
Welcome to the Table. Pepsi, official soft drink of Fresno
State Athletics. See Geek, the official ticketing partner of Fresno
State Athletics, ECU Smarter Bankings since nineteen thirty four and
(00:24):
by bud Late, Easy to Drink, Easy to Enjoy. Now
live from the Point Patio Baring Bistro. Here's your host,
the Voice of the Bulldogs, Paul Leffler.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
And it's a beautiful evening out here on the patio
at the Point Patio Bar and Bistro. They've got the
fire pits going, They've got the pumpkins. Are those real pumpkins?
I can't. I think they might be real pumpkins. Up
by the fountain. You can hear the fountain behind us.
We're out on the patio, not a cloud in the sky,
so you don't have to worry about getting wet. You
can think about what fantastic food you're going to order
(00:58):
from the Point. They've debuted new menu items and a
new October Halloween themed drink menu as well. We're gonna
have a special guest here in a moment, but I
need to inform you that we've got some great giveaways tonight.
We're giving away three hats that come from the Kennel
Marketplace kentle Marketplace right there at Campus Point. Now, these
(01:18):
hats take you back in time a little bit. They've
got the old school sailor hat bulldog on them and
there's three different versions of that. So if you want
to win one of those, you have to come join
us here at the Point Patti O'barnbistro, northwest corner of
Willow and Knees. We're here till eight o'clock tonight. The
later show on a Wednesday night with a Friday game.
The Bulldogs are going for their sixth win in a
(01:39):
row on Friday night at six o'clock against Colorado State
and Fort Collins. Our pregame coverage will start at four
on Friday afternoon four o'clock our time. Be the first
altitude game of the year for the Bulldogs, their first
trip ever at a canvas stadium which has been there
almost a decade. Hard to believe that, but that's the truth.
Coach matt Ens will be with us shortly, but before
(02:00):
we get to coach ents. We've got a special guest
whose voice you'll recognize, but he needs a proper introduction.
So here's the voice of Valley Children Stadium, the one
and only Matt.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
Lee Ab Ladies, gentlemen, boys and girls. You hear him
in the booth, you hear him on the sidelines, from Chauchilla,
Fresno City, to Fresno State to the Bears, and most important,
a cheer dad fraternity member.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
Ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
Cam woar eld.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Wow Cam. You've been introduced at almost every NFL stadium
and bet you never had an introduction quite like that before.
Speaker 6 (02:38):
That's one of one, right there, one of one.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Do you have a Clovis North cheerdad T shirt?
Speaker 4 (02:46):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
I don't know. I still have my Fresno Christian cheerdad
T shirt somewhere.
Speaker 6 (02:52):
I am a cheer dad that yells quite a bit
when they get when they start hitting, I do get going.
I have lost my voice at cheer competitions multiple time.
So Matt and I run into each other quite a
bit on the on the circuit.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
As we say, Well, if you think a football game
at Valley Children Stadium is loud, go to a high
school cheerleading competition. You haven't heard loud, you haven't seen
glitter or fake eyelashes.
Speaker 6 (03:15):
It's a different environer. It's a different world inside the
gymnasium that day.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
For sure. And I have to disagree with our friend
Brad Bell, the former Bulldog defensive end. He always says
cheerleading is not a sport. Oh and I told Brad
after watching our daughters do it over there at Presno Christian.
I mean they have to be at almost every sporting
event all year, those competitions. It requires incredible teamwork. Yeah,
probably the biggest time commitment of any sport.
Speaker 6 (03:41):
Sure, two and a half minutes of straight chaos is
what cheerleading is.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
That's it.
Speaker 6 (03:46):
Two and a half minutes of go all you can go.
So yeah, if they're not athletes, I'm not sure a
lot of other sports have athletes in it.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Well, we know the Bulldog football team has some athletes.
We're gonna hear from the head coach, Matt Ens in
just a moment. Cam's here. You'll hear him on the
sideline cam. You got it easy. This trip to Fort Collins.
It doesn't look like it's going to be cold. At all,
Like sixty five degrees at game time.
Speaker 6 (04:08):
Sounds beautiful, right, Well, I think we'll have some boise
in November. First will be we'll be a little cold,
So let's get all these early games nice and mild
for everybody before I have to stand on the sideline
in some freezing rain or something like that, which I
know boys is always going to do something to us.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
So this will be nice and mild. It will be
the first altitude game for the Bulldogs. We'll talk to
coachs about that in a moment. We're gonna need the
voice of Valley Children's Stadium, Matt Lee aberback to introduce,
no doubt our next guest. It has arrived. So uh, worm,
if you want to come back over, we'll get you
busy over here. But Cam while you're here, and you
can stick around, and maybe you have a question or
(04:48):
two for coach that I don't have. But I wanted
to have you talk about a guy who you've called
some of his games, because you know, coaches aren't allowed
to talk about players who haven't signed letters of intent yet.
But we know the recruiting season is hot and heavy
and a lot of Bulldog fans I'm sure, they've been
reaching out to you the way they've been reaching out
to me. There's a young man in this community who
(05:08):
had committed for a long time to another school who
changed his mind this week and said he's going to
be a bulldog. And you've actually watched him up close
and personal.
Speaker 6 (05:16):
Yeah, yeah, see Degan Rose a few times in his
high school career. Obviously has a physical skill set that
makes him a highly touted recruit. I don't know how
many offers he has, but it's quite a bit. There's
a lot of big time programs who want him to
come play quarterback for them. I think the thing that
stands out to me when watching him play from afar
(05:39):
from the booth right, I'm not down on the field,
but you could you can tell that he leads the offense.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
When he's on the football field.
Speaker 6 (05:47):
Everybody follows Degan Rose because he's the leader. They know
that if he needs to make a play, he's going
to figure out how to make a play, kind of
like EJ.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
Warner.
Speaker 6 (05:56):
Honestly, when the chips are down, Deagan Rose shows up.
I've seen EJ. Warner this year. When the chips are down, EJ.
Warner is going to show up. So he has the
physical skill set. He can make all the throws. He's athletic,
he's big, he plays physical when he needs to. But
I think the way he's able to bring his teammates
and elevate them to a higher level when they need
(06:18):
to go on a drive to win a football game.
That's what I've seen from Degan Rose. Could not be
more excited. I mean, it's just different. When you grow
up watching Fresno State football your entire life, right, you
grow up in this community, it means just a little
bit more. Right, It's just a little bit different for you.
And when you dream about putting that uniform on, and
(06:39):
you have all of these options and you can go
all these different places, but you realize, like, I want
to play in front of this community. I want to
play in front of Central Valley fans because I love
the atmosphere. I love what Fresno State puts on the
field as a football program. I think it's fantastic. And
(07:00):
it would not surprise me if more people, players, recruits,
decide to be a Bulldog because Degan Rose made that decision.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
Well, let's go back a few more years. I mean,
Jalen Cropper made kind of that same decision, became a bulldog.
Bryce and Donaldson, same thing. And then last year we've
got the coaching change. Harold Duvals committed to Fresno State.
Could have gone all these power schools, and this new
coaching staff says, no, here's why you need to be
a Bulldog. And now we see it continue with a
(07:30):
de commitment from a future conference opponent, a commitment to
Fresno State. Again, coaches can't talk about commitments until their
letters of intent, but I thought Cam could shed some
light on that. And now let's give a proper introduction
here at the point, Patti Obaran bistro to the head
coach of the first place Mountain West, leading two and
(07:50):
oh in conference, five straight win, Fresno State Bulldogs.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, please welcome the head
coach of your bulldogs. They are two and ozer in conference,
but as he says, the destination on Friday is to
be one and oh, please welcome head coach Matt Eds.
Speaker 2 (08:09):
I think you got that right with the one and oh.
I've heard him say that a few times. Hey, Cam,
you can come back and ask a couple of questions
A coach adds too, you're used to doing it on
the sideline. Coach, I know it's a busy week, a
short week, a go go go kind of week, and
maybe let's start there. What's different on a week like this?
Is there anything your staff has had to account for
(08:31):
that you wouldn't on a typical week.
Speaker 4 (08:33):
For the most part, everything that we're going to do
up until through tomorrow will be very similar, and then
we just we don't get our real big walkthrough that
we normally do on Friday, you know, before we would
leave on a traditional game that's on a Saturday, so
we'll have probably an extended walkthrough in the hotel or
somewhere near the hotel on on their grounds on Friday
(08:54):
in Fort Collins instead, there's a.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Lot of room in that hotel parking lot. I've been
there a few times, so thankfully, it's not going to
be icy this time of year. Cam. Did you recognize
that voice or does it sound a little different than
the at the end of the game coach had's voice.
Speaker 6 (09:09):
It's a struggle sometimes I think for coach and I
to have a conversation because my voice is not strong.
But at the end of the game, I mean, he's
he's struggling very badly. It's been sixty minutes of a
battle and he yeah, there's some hoarseness going on in
that voice. I'm curious. It's a short week. Everything's accelerated. Yep,
you're five and one right now. Have you been able
(09:32):
at all to just take a little bit of a
step back and say, we had goals, we had things
that we thought we could accomplish, We thought we had
an idea of where this may go. But right now
we're sitting at five and one with a chance to
go three and zero in conference on the road and
get a bye week six and one with bull eligibility
(09:53):
and seven like, have you had any time to just
kind of take a step back and look at kind
of the big picture of what you've done so far?
Speaker 4 (09:59):
You know, honestly, that's probably not who I am personally now.
Maybe next week or Sunday when we meet us a staff,
we'll we'll have a little more conversation about where we're at,
how we need to improve over you know, the next
by week. But yeah, I'm always looking forward to the
next one, and so this will be a huge challenge
this week. I'm excited about going out there. I think
(10:22):
they're they're a much better football team. I said it
on Monday than what the record indicates, and so we're
gonna have to be ready to go. And you know,
everyone plays a little better at home, and so we
know we're gonna get their best shot.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Six o'clock Friday night is when it kicks off. We're
here at the Point Patiobar and Bistro with coach matt Ens.
He'll be here till eight o'clock tonight. If you've got questions,
you can come join us, or you can send them
in on the x AP with the hashtag ask fs.
We've got three really snazzy new hats that I'd never
seen before, straight from the Kettle Marketplace that we're gonna
be giving away tonight. Cam I'm just thinking about. I mean,
(10:54):
you played two of the better Colorado State teams there
ever were, and probably the most dynamic quarterback Colorado State's
ever had, and Bradley Vanhelt. You had a huge interception
to beat a nationally ranked Colorado State team your senior year.
What's impressed you about these last two games with this
Bulldog secondary. It's not just the secondary getting picks, but
(11:14):
Presno State thinking of the country nine interceptions.
Speaker 6 (11:17):
Yeah, I mean, anytime you face an offense like the
run and shoot out in Hawaii, you know that your
secondary is going to be tested, and to win a
game like that, your secondary has to play really, really well.
And I think I talked to coach after the game
and asked him, like, why is this defense playing so well?
And you said, they're just comfortable now, right, They're not thinking,
They're just reacting. And I think what we've seen is
(11:39):
the combination of the physical skill set that this secondary possesses,
the coaching that has gone on. But now they're just
comfortable and understand what they're doing every snap, So they're
just reacting now, they're not thinking. They're playing at a
little bit of a different speed, and that's when you
start to step in front of passes. That's when you
start to get your hands up and get a tip
(11:59):
and another guy gets a pick. So we knew Azilian
was gonna do his thing. But Jakari Embriy the way
that he has developed, Simeon Harris, the way he's stepped
into that nickel position, Cam Brocker finally healthy, playing really
good football. And then I mean Ryan Wilson stepped in.
Not a lot probably expected out of him at the
beginning of the season, but he's greatly improved and he's
(12:23):
been a big piece of kind of just solidifying that
secondary a little bit, being a stable force, making tackles
in space, playing good coverage. It's it's been it's been
very nice to watch as a secondary, as a former
secondary guy, to watch that secondary just you know, really
make it hard for offenses to move the football, and
they've done a really nice job of that, especially in
the last.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
Couple of weeks they have. I bet it's fun for
you too, as a defensive minded coach to see how
how for the most part, consistent that defense has been.
Speaker 4 (12:51):
It has it's been a it's been a really good,
you know scent They've they've improved. I think you know
Cam that you know, he installed everything in spring and
you know we kind of maybe knew maybe a level
of the defense, and then we did it again in June,
and then we did it again in fall camp, and
(13:12):
now you know, they're starting to they understand that they
know the whys behind behind it, they know the how
we're going to play this, the fundamentals and the technique
and and I think that says a lot about our
coaching staff. We got a really great defensive staff. They're
very thorough in their game planning, but also when just
teaching of the fundamentals of the game, because we all
(13:32):
know at some point during the course of the game,
someone's going to give you something you haven't seen. Well,
your rules and principles of the call better be able
to get you to at least to the next time out,
to the next intermission, to the next you know, opportunity
to get off the field where you can really start
drawing it up, look at it on the iPad, and
and be corrective about it.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
Well, the Bulldogs are on a roll, five straight wins,
going for number six on Friday night in Fort Collins.
Time for our first break. But if we're not here yet,
if you're not here yet, we've got a few seats
left for you. Maybe Doug and Jim and Tomill let's
just see that that open seat on their table there. Yeah,
they're not in their heads. We've got hats to give away,
and you can come meet the coach, congratulate them on
five straight and wish them well on number six. There's
(14:15):
some news about that game by the way, the next
home game against San Diego State, that will share when
we come back. It's the point Patti Obar and Bistro
till eight o'clock the Bulldog Football Hour on the Bulldog
Sports Network from their field.
Speaker 7 (14:26):
Being born and raised in the Central Valley, it's always
been a dream to come back and be able to
work here. My name is doctor Adam Hinkawa. I'm a
general dentist as Shinkawa Dental and this is my FFB
Bank Storry.
Speaker 8 (14:36):
FFB Bank is great.
Speaker 7 (14:37):
They have a local touch, local fuel, but they have
the bandwidth of a national bank. From processing deposits, applying
for loans and getting credit lines, they can do at all.
Something our down taught us is that dentistry isn't just
about treating teeth, but helping people. And this is exactly
the culture and feeling we get at FFB.
Speaker 9 (14:57):
No matter how large or small you're digging product, maybe
always call eight one one before you dig. Eight one
one is the national phone number that notifies your local
utility companies to come out and mark the location of
their buried lines. Damaging buried utility lines can lead to injury,
service outages and expensive repair costs. This free service helps
(15:18):
you to avoid hitting underground lines in your area, so
before you do any digging, make sure you call eight
one one.
Speaker 10 (15:26):
Bulldog fans, it's the old culture. Pat Hill here to
tell you about our friends at Table Mountain two thousand
slot machines, Hi Gal, Blackjack and Mini Bacarac on a
smoke free floor, head to sky the rooftop Tepanyaki restaurant
with unbelievable views, or eagles landing a one of a
kind steakhouse, sing along with headliner entertainment before returning to
(15:49):
one of the luxurious suites. Have your own lucky day
followed by an epic night at Table Mountain Casino Resort.

You hear that that's the sound of Pepsi zero sugar.
The better tasting, more refreshing zero sugar cola. Listen to
that endless, poor pure refreshment. If it sounds this good,
just imagine how it tastes. Oh yeah, so good Pepsi
(16:53):
zero sugar. Let your taste decide.
Speaker 13 (16:58):

Speaker 2 (17:25):
Go Dogs, Bulldogs back up to their own ten yard line.
Speedy Luke, the tailback warner, takes a shotgun snap hands
it to Luke on a little delay. Trying to bounce outside,
splits two defenders.
Speaker 14 (17:36):
There he goes to the twenty five race into the
thirty right sideline. Forty fifty one man to be the
forty five jukes inside and tumbles down to the twenty
three yard line. Speedy Luke goes sixty seven yard.
Speaker 4 (17:50):
That's the play that might just open it up right there.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
Well, the Bulldogs opened up a big lead and then
protected it at the end. Ran out the clock on
Nevada last Saturday to get to five and one and
a perfect two and oh in Mountain West play the
only two and o team in the league. They'll try
to make it three and oh on Friday night in
Fort Collins. We're not in Fort Collins yet. We're here
in beautiful Fresno, and boy is it a lovely evening,
isn't it. We've had those full moons lately that have
(18:16):
been incredible. We're out here on the patio. We've got
the fountain, the fire, the fantastic food, and I'm guessing
coach Enz hasn't tried any more of the menu. Because
you keep winning, you must be getting the same thing
every week.
Speaker 4 (18:27):
The same, the exact same thing. My wife gets the
same thing too. I won't let her change whatever we
got to do, whatever she needs to do to help
us keep winning.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
Brend is a team player all the way. For those
of you who aren't superstitious and want to branch out,
There are a few new menu items here at the point,
especially on Sunday Brunch, you can get the Brussels sprouts
Benedict And if you want to find out what all
goes into that, you've got to come here to the
point where you might win a Bulldog hat tonight with
(18:56):
this sailor dog logo. One of them's black and black,
the color the Bulldogs are going to wear at their
next home game on October twenty fifth, when Jeff Tedford
goes into the Ring of honor, San Diego State will
be the opponent. Have you ever played in blackout uniforms
before in any of your stops?
Speaker 4 (19:13):
Coach, Uh have not spent the first time?
Speaker 2 (19:16):
Well, we've talked a lot about hey first time with
his first time with that. Yeah, And this Friday you
have your first altitude game as Presno State's head coach,
going to be a mile high there in Fort Collins.
I'm thinking back to your North Dakota State days you
had big sky opponents Montana, Montana State some altitude there.
Speaker 4 (19:35):
Yeah, I don't think we haven't made a big deal
out of it. Now our nutritionists has had this drink
that our guys have had every morning concoction that has
supposedly supposed to open up your veins, make the blood
(19:55):
flow a little bit better, carry more oxygen. So if
that were than good for us, now it was way
above my head. So she can do her thing as
long as she doesn't want to talk cover three with
me so.
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Well, and and she might get some cover three by
osmosis as much time as she spends a restaurant, guys,
which might not be too different from the process she's
talking about with the oxygenation of the blood at altitude
and all that. And you heard I heard you say
you're not making a big deal about it, And that's
what I was going to ask you, because some coaches
they don't even want to talk about it. Other guys say, hey,
(20:31):
I want you to be prepared. And the ball does
fly a little different, maybe your kicker's got a little range.
I have seen quarterbacks maybe have it sail on them
a little bit. But ultimately it's the same game, and
both teams are playing the same.
Speaker 4 (20:42):
Game exactly exactly, We're both we both have the same
environmental factors that night. So yeah, it's just one of
those things that I, you know, I thought earlier in
the week I was aware of it, but I just
I don't think it's going to have a huge impact
on what we're doing. Probably a lot. Like you know,
people who come here and they have to talk about
(21:03):
the heat, you know, especially when they're playing us early
in the year, Hey, it's going to be hot in Fresno.
You know, Well, how much do you want to talk
about it? How much do you you know, do you
talk about it to a point where it becomes a concern? Yeah?
Speaker 15 (21:16):
Do?
Speaker 4 (21:16):
You don't want to belittle it. And so I'm just like,
I'm you know, we're gonna it's all about the you know,
our execution. You know, it's all about playing the team
you know from Fort Coulens this week.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
You don't want to give you guys a complex. And
I know a lot of our listeners will be disappointed
if I don't make the obligatory Jerry Tarkanian reference, who
famously said in Laramie, Wyoming that altitude didn't matter in
a basketball game because it's played indoors. Okay, this will
be outdoors at Canvas Stadium, a stadium where Fresno States
never played. And for those who are wondering right now,
(21:48):
which would be about the time halftime will come Friday night.
It's fifty eight degrees in Fort Collins. The high temperature
forecast for Friday sixty eight, So it shouldn't be too
bad at all. And you've said a couple of times
that you don't think this RAMS team is that bad either,
that you see some danger in a squad who at
this point has one win, kind of in the last
(22:10):
minute with a replay decision to beat their rivals from
up the road in Greeley, Northern Colorado. What do you
see from Jay Norvel's team that gives you a little concern.
Speaker 4 (22:20):
Well, I think, you know, they finally kind of settled
in on a quarterback. I do think he's he's talented.
You know, they're they're trying to find their identity offensively.
They've gotten into some air raid concepts in the past game.
I think they have two running backs, number two, Dupre
number twenty five. I think it's Avan. I think they
(22:41):
both run downhill really well. One cut guys have enough
speed to have some impact plays. I think they're a
well coached offensive line. I think they're they're I think
both Fresno and Colorado State are kind of in the
same shoe. The same boat when it comes to receivers.
Young rooms still still growing. They have some talented kids,
(23:01):
you can see it. And then defensively they just from
what they do schematically. There is a lot of moving
parts and if you aren't able to adjust to those
moving parts, I d those moving parts, there's gonna be
some tackles for lost, you're gonna get you off schedule.
They love to play cover one, cover zero, and so
you have you've got to have a plan and for protection,
(23:23):
you gotta have a plan how you're gonna run the
football game. They challenge you, and you got to You
got to stick to your plan because you know those
those runs of three, you know, all of a sudden
you increase one and it's cover zero. There's no one
to knock it down, and just going to be a
chunk play. But you gotta stay consistent.
Speaker 2 (23:41):
And I know you weren't here last year, but you
know a good chunk of your team was, and a
lot of those Rams were and that Rams coaching staff was.
And last year Fresno State took something from Colorado State.
The Rams came here and we're still in the hunt
to make a Mountain West Championship game. Fresno State had
a big win at Valley Children's Stadium over the Rams,
So I'm sure they're going to be revenge minded. And
the other thing that came to mind knowing you and
(24:02):
where you're from, uh, you know the guy from Waterloo,
Iowa going up against a former Iowa Hawk, guy Jay Norvell,
whose mentor was the great Hayden Fry. I bet you
guys probably swapped a few stories about Hayden Fry when
you met each other.
Speaker 4 (24:15):
We we haven't yet, we've talked a little bit, but
you know, I'm I do remember when when coach Norvel
was playing for the Hawkeyes a little bit years ago,
and so you know it, you run into a ton
of great people in the coaching profession. And coach Norvel
has had a ton of success, you know, as a
position coach, as a coordinator, had a ton of success

It's out of the gun this time to hand it
to Ramirez. Right it to the short side of the field.
So it's a B left sideline twenty. He breaks the
tackle at the fifteen and he's down inside the ten.
The ram Man doing some more putting the ram in
Rammirez and it's first in goal Bulldogs at the nine
of Nevada. That'll take us to the two minute timeout. Yeah,
(28:32):
you know what happened. The Bulldogs won the game over Nevada.
They won five straight. They're trying to become Bowl eligible
when they go to Fort Collins Friday night. Six o'clock
will be the kickoff. Our pregame coverage starts at four.
And that nickname Ramman came courtesy of Cammorrel, who joined
us earlier. Coach Ets. You know, we're close to the
same age. I remember all the little action figures when
(28:54):
I was growing up, the the he Man and the
Masters of the Universe. Remember that?
Speaker 4 (28:57):
Yep?
Speaker 2 (28:58):
Is that Ramman reference something? You recall that character who
had hit things with his head.
Speaker 4 (29:03):
I can't picture him, but the name's familiar right now, but.
Speaker 2 (29:08):
I had completely forgotten.
Speaker 4 (29:09):
H Yeah, but that is a that fits Brandon RUNSI
is eight downhill physical back. You got to make a
business decision when you're gonna tackle Brandon.
Speaker 2 (29:19):
Yeah, because you're gonna feel it, and let's talk about that,
because he became the feature back on that possession, game
winning drive eight minutes and forty two seconds. I'm sure
when Jeff Choate punted the ball back to you guys,
he thought he was gonna get at least one more possession.
He got nothing because an offense that had been struggling
to convert third downs converted two huge third downs on
(29:41):
that drive. EJ had the past to Richie Anderson and
he scrambled on third and eleven, moved the chains, and
then it was the Brandon Ramirez show. But we hadn't
seen a whole lot of Brandon as a ball carrier.
And to that point, can you walk us through how
that works when when your staff decides, hey, this is
the personnel that fits this situation best.
Speaker 4 (30:01):
Well, I think you know, some of it comes to
just practice reps. You have X number of practice reps
during the week. You saw earlier in the game unfortunately
got called back because of a penalty. Brandon was in
there in a short yardage situation red zone, scored a touchdown,
and then you know, as the game unfolded, we got
back to some of our short yardage goal line type
(30:21):
package in the four minute mode and he had repped
it more than anyone. And you know, Brandon does a
great job ball security. He's a he's a fall forward,
you know, type of back, you know, and so it
just fit in the moment. And so he does a
good job and we need to continue to elevate his role.
He does a great job on special teams. That night,
(30:42):
he had a big tackle on kickoff. I think that
knocked the ball down at the eighteen yard line. And
so he's showing up multiple places. And those are the
Brandon and guys like him are the ones that you
just love to watch because every day they continue to
get better and they just appreciate their teammates, they appreciate
being part of of the organ of the community that
we've created in Bulldog football.
Speaker 2 (31:03):
And he's another Valley native playing a big role for
the Bulldogs. By the way, former Bulldog Aaron Judge just
drove in a run for the Yankees. But their season
is on the line. They trail five to two, bottom nine.
We're watching that on television and the Dodger game against
the Phillies at the same time. Out here on the
patio of the Point patio bar and Bistro with the
Bulldog Football Hour, And speaking of Brandon Ramirez, what you
(31:25):
just said his role. I was thinking about that after
that possession. Teams are going to see that on film
and when they see him on the field, they'll also
see the touchdown he scored that got called back. Did
you guys ever see afterwards? What what constituted that penalty?
Why the flat came it was? It was an illegal formation.
We we did a we we didn't do a very
good job of getting lined up correctly.
Speaker 4 (31:46):
We had five backs in the backfield and just you know,
and those are the ones, those are the things we
have to control. Those are I call him administrative penalties.
They happened before the snap or after the whistle. We
got to eliminate those because those are my responsibility. Those
are a reflection of us as a football team. If
if one ref hold calls holding one week, odds are
(32:08):
the someone else won't in the next week. Those are subjective,
you know, and that's part of the game. That's a
human element of the game. But we got to do
a good job of eliminating the administrative penalties.
Speaker 2 (32:18):
And with regard to Brandon, maybe this is an overly
simplistic view. But my thought was seeing him featured the
way he was on that game ending drive teams when
they watch film on you're going to see that now.
And when he's on the field saying a two back set,
even if his main purpose is blocking, they have to
be concerned about him as a ball carrier, don't.
Speaker 4 (32:37):
They definitely definitely and and and and he's he's out
there quite a bit when we get into some of
our two back stuff, and we're going to continue to
utilize him because, like you said, he just he his
value has exponentially grown since I arrived on campus back
in the spring, you know. And he he fits a
need and he provides a different set of skills, skills
(32:58):
that our other backs don't have. And that's that's what's
great about the running back room that Coach Pryor's put together,
is we have three or four different backs that we
can use at any different given time that all have
just a little bit different different speed acceleration, different power level,
and it just a change up, you know, all for defenses.
Speaker 2 (33:19):
We're talking to Coach matt Ens. We're here at the
point Patti Obar and Bistro, and unfortunately for former Bulldog
Aaron Judge. His season just came to an end. The
Yankees have been eliminated by the Toronto Blue Jays, But
you can look forward to Aaron hopefully being named American
League MVP for the third time in his career. Should
be number four, But that's my opinion, coach. We had
a question come in here from Robert on the xAPP.
(33:41):
He used that hashtag askfs. He said, Coach, why you
can't talk about commits until they sign? Can you tell
us how much of an impact that playing in the
PAC twelve next year has had on recruiting and getting
a type of player Fresno State might not get before.
Speaker 4 (33:57):
Well, you know, I think it's I think it's opened
some eyes. It's shown uh, you know, a university and
an athletic department that's progressive, that wants to move and
is uh wants to continue to grow and and sees
themselves as something bigger than than what we've been. So
I think a lot of people are noticing that we're
trying to emulate that. Having the ability to become an
(34:20):
Autonomy five league potentially down the road, I think has
people excited and if if you fit into that little
Niche right there, you're gonna have. You know, the conference
champion is gonna have an opportunity to continue to play,
and that's exciting. You know, getting into the college football
playoff is a is a huge deal. I mean, you
(34:42):
can ask one of our peer institutions did it a
year ago, and and I'm sure the benefits, you know
are I'm sure there's a ton of them, and ones
that we wouldn't even see or don't even know of.
But it has it's it has opened up some recruiting
here areas. I think in the state of California, people
appreciate Fresno state for who we are, uh and and
(35:04):
kind of who we've been. But for us going east,
being in the Pac twelve has opened up, you know,
some opportunities. We have three guys from the state of
or from Chicago. We have a defensive lineman, a defensive
two defensive linemens from you know, the Midwest, you know, Minnesota, Wisconsin.
We have two players from Iowa on our football team.
(35:26):
And all of a sudden, to be able to go
pick and choose a little bit, we have We've we've
been in Omaha recruiting as well, you know, because we're
we're as close of a four year institution as anyone
else you know, you know, and so we can get
them here, and we're putting a good product. We're a
premier development program, so kids know that they're not we're
(35:46):
not going to skip the development. We're not going to
skip the work here. And and you've got to be
wired the right way to come here now, and you've
got to be looking for those things. But we'll we'll
find the right ones.
Speaker 2 (35:56):
I want to talk to you a little bit more
about that when we come back time for another We're
here at the Point Patti Obar and Bistro. If you
want to win one of these snazzy new hats, you
can come join us. You've got to enter to win
before we wrap up the show at eight o'clock. And
I mentioned these hats came from the Kennel Marketplace. That's
also where you can go to get your blackout gear
for the next home game. The Dogs will wear black
(36:17):
against San Diego State on October twenty fifth, So the
Kennel Marketplace at Campus Point or on campus and also
the Bulldog Locker right across from the stadium. They've got
lots of blackout gear that I think you'll find pretty
compelling and you might want to be sporting in Valley
Children's Stadium on October twenty fifth for the next home game.
We don't have a time for that game yet, but
(36:38):
it's coming. We know that at Friday night it'll be
a six o'clock kicking Fork Collins. Four o'clock our pregame show.

you've got a question for the coach, send it our

(40:19):
of twenty twenty five. Hopefully not the last. The Bulldogs
invade Fort Collins, first trip ever to Canvas Stadium, which
opened in twenty seventeen. Last time the Dogs played in
Fort Collins was twenty sixteen. We've got coach ENT's here
at the point Patti o'baron Bistro, northwest corner of Willow
and Knees. We're here till eight o'clock and we've got
hats to give away. We're gonna do a little bulldog
(40:41):
trivia for the hats today, So let's see who knows
their bulldog trivia in about twenty minutes. If you've got
a question for the coach, you can send it in
on the x app with that hashtag askfs Coach. Before
the break, we were talking a little bit of recruiting
and how you guys handle that, and you mentioned no
matter where you're fine. I'm getting the right guys. And
(41:02):
there's a couple things that have to me really been
distinct about your squad this year. One is your batting
average on transfer portal guys is really high.
Speaker 4 (41:14):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (41:14):
I mean I'm looking at the defensive side of the ball,
you know, interior D line and defensive end, both linebackers,
especially your nickel. All these guys are guys you identified
in the transfer portal who are playing really consistent football
for you. And then there's another element you and I
have talked before, but let's talk about that when it
comes to transfer portal guys yep, because some coaches look
(41:37):
at that and they say, well, maybe they're radioactive. Why
are they in the portal? There's got to be a
reason they're transferring. Sometimes there are good reasons. Can you
give us a taste of maybe what your guys filter
looked like and identifying, hey, this is somebody who would
fit well in the bulldog program.
Speaker 4 (41:52):
Well, when it comes to transfers, I think there's a
couple of things that just jump out at you. One
you always want to know why, So let's do our
due diligence. We're gonna call a position coach. Usually the
strength coach is the one that has the most accurate
information because he spends more time with them than anybody else,
And so that that's always a mandatory that we get
a hold of a strength coach, athletic trainer. You know,
(42:15):
just what was the vibe, why was this person going in?
If if it works, and then you can find you know,
transfers from a place that you have connections or place
that you trust people, that always helps. If it's a
young man that you recruited previously, that's always a positive
because you already kind of know, you know what his
(42:35):
story is. You've already peeled back to the layers before
in the previous recruiting effort, and now you get a
chance to kind of rekindle a little bit. We are
always looking for players who have actually played in games.
You know, I laugh sometimes I snicker when I hear
people talk about, well, he's a former five star. The
keyword is former. That means that he hasn't lived up
(42:57):
to his potential. If we're talking about former, so like
for me, it's two hundred snaps. That's that's the Mendoza line.
You know, you need to have played in two hundred snaps,
I mean meaningful where I see you compete, I see
you play, I see you have to Maybe you get
knocked off the ball and you have to come back
the next play. How do you respond? And so that
(43:17):
we still got to have guys that have some length
to them, have great knee bend, you know, and guys
that play with high energy. And then and then in
the in the speed dating that goes on with transfer transfers,
because you don't get them here very long, you better
find out quickly at what their football IQ is. And
then on top of that, what's you know, are they
going to fit into your locker room? What's what's the character?
(43:40):
What's the makeup of these individuals? And and and you're right,
we're we hope we can start to wean ourselves from
transfer again. We'll always take, you know, young men that
maybe had an opportunity to go elsewhere and want to
come back home, because that's what had you know, a
guy like Julian McLain was that Louisville to get back
(44:00):
to California. I wanted to get back closer to home.
And there's others on our football team that have done
the same. But you know, we are excited about fifty
percent of our transfers who brought in our starters right now,
and a couple of them are captains, and so it
tells you that they hit the ground running, and then
that we got the right type of people in our
building right now.
Speaker 2 (44:21):
And the other part of that that as people ask me,
what's impressed me the most? Another, you know, the fact
that you guys found so many transfers. A lot of
times there's a swing and a miss on a transfer
here or there, and sometimes all of them. But the
other thing is there's so many guys on this team
that are playing such a much bigger role than they
had before this staff took over. And we've talked before
(44:44):
about the clean slate that you gave everybody. But I'm
looking at Rolling Fullwood at right tackle. I'm looking at
Sonny Zeppra defensive end, Ryan Wilson in the secondary. You
can probably think of a few more guys who probably
had reason to think, I don't know if I'm ever
going to get a shot, And now not only are
they getting a shot, they're having an impact every game.
I mean, Sunny Zeppra might be one of the most
underrated guys on the team. He's in the mix of everything.
(45:08):
Is it kind of the same thing with those guys
in terms of speed dating? When you take over a
program you use that analogy or is there a little
different wrinkle when it comes to guys who've been in
this program but maybe haven't gotten the shot.
Speaker 4 (45:20):
Well? I think no, I do think you treat him
just a little bit differently. But when I came in,
you know, with guys who another one I'm gonna throw
It was Cam Beacham.
Speaker 2 (45:30):
Amen.
Speaker 4 (45:31):
Yeah, Cam actually went in the portal before I became
the head football coach, sat down, had a conversation with him.
I said, Cam, let's let's really have a man demand conversation.
So you want to go somewhere else and figure it
all out, or you could stay here and figure it
out with me, because the academic piece is going to
change everywhere you go. But you know what the academics
(45:52):
are here. You know what it looks like to get
a degree from here, which is gonna get done, you know,
So instead of going the portal, why don't you just
bet on yourself and have success here? And he's having
it and that was kind of the same messaging to
a lot of the guys that you know, hey, give
our staff an opportunity to develop you. We can You've
heard a say Premier development program. We are gonna We're
(46:13):
not not only between the white lines are we developing.
We're gonna do it in the classroom. We're going to
do it in the community. You know, someone thirty years
ago did it for Matt Enston. So I'm paying it
forward to all these young men. And I've that's something
that I think I've told you When I became a dad,
I became a better football coach because it became about
more than just production in the stats. It became about
(46:34):
being transformational, making sure that we have lifelong relationships and
they want to come back and enjoy being a bulldog
when they're old like me.
Speaker 2 (46:43):
And I mean, I guess this maybe this is master
the obvious because it goes for any recruiting situation. But
in order to win over that many young men, because
as Alian Hamilton was in the portal, Josiah Freeman was
in the portal, I mean a lot of your most
talented players or at least proven players we're in the portal,
had to believe that you had a case to make
that they would buy into. So you actually have to
(47:05):
buy in yourself to what you're selling.
Speaker 4 (47:08):
I knew what I was sewing. I was your best
football is way ahead are you? And just give us
a chance, you know, give us an opportunity to work
with you on a day to day basis. Watch how
we're going to change things internally, maybe just on how
we structure things, what we emphasize. You know, we're healthier
than we've been in a long time. And you know,
our athletic trainer says, because we carry more armor than
(47:30):
we had before. You know, we're just bigger and strong, right,
and there's something to be said about that. And our
kids know that. And you know we're playing better on
the line of scrimmage. I know, you know this last
week we got frustrated because we only had one hundred
and sixty yards rushing. You know, our our bad days
used to be our average days, and we're continuing to
grow still. And so but you know, I sold them.
(47:53):
I gave them my message. I gave them my vision
and what it looked like. And I think most of
them are appreciative that of the transparency when I came
in and told them, just matter of fact, if this
is what we're doing, this is how we're doing it
up at this point that what I told them is
how it is.
Speaker 2 (48:12):
I think you said once, when you tell the truth,
you don't have to remember what you told someone.
Speaker 4 (48:15):
That's right.

Speaker 2 (51:30):
First and ten at the twenty five of Nevada, Warner
to throw again taking a shot for the end zone
cot in the corner, second touchdown tonight for Big Josiah Freeman.
Speaker 4 (51:47):
Hi sol fade route.
Speaker 2 (51:51):
You'll hear from Josiah Freeman on Friday night in our
pregame show young man who last time he had scored
was the play he got injured on that to this
season last year. So to have two touchdowns and finish
the game and be playing for bull eligibility Friday night
is pretty special for number five in a Bulldog uniform.
Bulldogs play Colorado State Friday night, six o'clock. Our pregame
(52:14):
coverage will start at four. We've got a few more
minutes here tonight with coach Matt Enttz at the Point
patio bar in bistro where everyone's having a good time.
Did I see some sweet potato fries over there? Yep,
thumbs up for those. The Brussels sprouts are great, The
burgers are great. Short rib tacos or did they put
your name on that spicy chicken rap yet?
Speaker 19 (52:33):
Come?
Speaker 4 (52:33):
I don't think so. I don't think so.
Speaker 2 (52:35):
What are they waiting for? Around here? You can go
to the end zone in the score a touchdown with
the spicy chicken wrap, the point, patio bar and bistro.
So your team's won five straight. You're a big want
to know this week guy, But are there any areas
where you feel the momentum that a five game win
streak can generate?
Speaker 4 (52:55):
You know, I think you see over the course of
the last five games of confidence, I'll tell you what.
We've elevated our standard internally in the program along these
five games. Uh, you know, I think how we practice
has become really important to our kids. And I hear
(53:16):
him talking about standard, and I hear him talking about,
you know, doing the little thing. The details is where
we're gonna win games. I hear him talking about going
one to oh and not not looking ahead because it's easy,
especially with these three by five you know, little boxes
that we all carry around Royce comparing and you know,
looking to head to the few what what's he doing,
what's she doing? And what do they got? You know,
(53:38):
we just need to worry about in the moment that
we're in right now, and that that makes the best
football teams.
Speaker 2 (53:44):
You know, I was struck. I guess that was yesterday
after practice. You know, players are doing interviews and there's
four or five different local media there that are asking
different questions, but sometimes you're all interviewing the same guy
at the same time. And some of the questions I'm
not saying this was the intent, but they came off
as trying to get a defensive player to speak to
(54:08):
the offense and to struggle the offensive had, or trying
to get an offensive player talk about a struggle the
defensive had, just in the way the questions were phrased,
again not saying intent, but in both cases I saw
your players basically say, no, we play as a team.
It's not about offense versus defense. It's about the Bulldogs.
We play situational football, complimentary football. And I'm like, I
(54:31):
think they're hearing what the coaching staff's saying.
Speaker 4 (54:33):
Yep, I think so too. Yeah, to get a room
of one hundred and twenty eighteen to twenty three year
olds to listen, you know, because hearing's one thing you know,
we both know. Yeah, for years I've been told to
put my bath towel away. But you know, I hear it,
(54:54):
but I don't know if I've listened to it very
well over the years, So you know there's a difference.
So you got to get our guys listen.
Speaker 2 (55:02):
Yeah, and and unlike the bath teel, you're not married
to this player. But yeah, I get the analogy for sure.
So let's talk about the improvement you're looking for. We've
got a few minutes left, and you want this team
to steadily improve and be a championship contender. And right
now you're right in the square of that. Is there
an area or two of improvement that you think this
(55:25):
team has a chance to display on Friday night and
Fort Collins that we give you greater confidence of its
championship potential.
Speaker 4 (55:31):
Consistency again, in all areas, I think I think we've
we've we've seen all three phases play at a really
high level, and we've seen all three phases play really average.
The positive thing is we've never seen them all play
average at the same time. And and that's that's the
cop what you were just saying. The complimentary football, you know,
(55:53):
last Saturday night was a great example. You know, you
look at and and I and I challenged our guys
this week. Hey, if you need something to think about,
how about we played like the last twelve minutes period
and you could take that as a how about you
live life like the last twelve minutes because we had
to get us three and out. Yep, we got a
(56:13):
great play on special teams. A lot of people on
the TV or at the game when to realize they
were blocking it up for a fake. But because we
had so many eyes looking back at the punter and
John Baxter does a great job, they had a punt
and then we go on a nine minute, fifteen play drive.
How about we just live like that? And if we
do those things, we're going to be really successful. But
let's not wait till the last nine minutes, all right.
(56:35):
The hearts of all our fans, our coaches can't handle that.
Let's start this thing right away. And they're receptive. They know,
you know, we got to appreciate every win, and we
do because half the country lost on Saturday and we
weren't part of that half. We were the half that won,
and so we need to appreciate them. We need to
continue to get better and we will. Our kids I'm
(56:58):
excited about their willingness to continue to be uncomfortable. You know,
you can either be comfortable or you can be productive.
And they've done a really good job of being productive.
Speaker 2 (57:09):
Five straight wins, looking for number six on Friday night.
And that last comparison takes me back to when you
said becoming a father made you a better football coach,
And that kind of sounded like when you tell your kids,
don't wait till the last minute to get your homework done.
Speaker 4 (57:22):
That's exactly right, that's exactly right. There's probably a lot
of times I sound like a dad to the football chamber.
Speaker 2 (57:27):
So well, we've got maybe a little more than a
minute left. I've been impressed by EJ. Warner's situational performance
when the stakes are the highest on a play. He's
made some big plays. We saw it in Hawaii, sought
at Oregon State, sought this last game. What have you
appreciated the most about number thirteen?
Speaker 4 (57:47):
His preparation uncanny. He's up in the office all the time.
You know, I think him and Coach Davis meet for
a while, then they go play a game of ping pong,
then they go back and meet, and you just he's
he's around and then he then he goes into the
analyst office, and you know Jared Taylor, who's kind of
(58:07):
our assistant quarterback coach, he picks his brain and just
unbelievably thorough. But you know, and then you look back
at the last I think it's three weeks in a
row we've executed a two minute drill to score either
at the end of the half, end of the game,
and you know that doesn't happen. I mean, for three
weeks in a row, we've been able to hit on
(58:27):
those things. It takes the right composure. It takes a
confident young man to do that, but also someone who
can walk in the huddle and lead ten other people
to where we need.
Speaker 2 (58:37):
To get while looking forward to seeing him and the
Bulldogs do it again Friday night at six o'clock against
Colorado State. One last question on that you mentioned the
ping pong with coach Davis. Is there a tally on
the wall or anything.
Speaker 4 (58:47):
I think there is. I think there's actually is one
in coach Coach Davis will play anybody, anywhere, anytime. He
is the most competitive person in the world. He will
gamble on anything, and so you got to be careful
around him. But it's a good ice breaker. It's just
you know, a what's work work work, Hey, let's go
have some fun conversation, you know. And I think that's
(59:09):
how we kind of keep it. I always keep keep
it likable and learnable. Amen, he's coach Matt ds.
Speaker 2 (59:15):
