Speaker 1 (00:02):
On the Bulldog Sports Network from Learfield. This is the
Bulldog Football Hour, brought to you by Table Mountain Casino.
Welcome to the Table, Pepsi, official soft drink of Fresno
State Athletics, set Geek, the official ticketing partner of Fresno
State Athletics, EECU Smarter Banking since nineteen thirty four, and

(00:24):
by bud Late, Easy to Drink, Easy to Enjoy. Now
live from the Point Pattio barring Bistro, here's your host,
the Voice of the Bulldogs, Paul Leffler.

Speaker 2 (00:41):
Well, hey, hey, hey, it's the Bulldog Football Hour, and
we are here at the Point Patio Bar and Bistro,
northwest corner of Willow and Knees. Coach matt Ens is here,
Dylan Lytch, Bulldogs kicker, is going to be here a
little bit later, and right in front of us, we
have the helmet the Bulldog's going to be sporting on
Saturday night for Heroes Night. And there's a wrinkle. I

(01:04):
wonder if everyone who's here on the patio of the
Point Patio Bar and Bistro can figure out what's different
about this helmet, because maybe you've seen the white helmet
before with the red, white and blue bulldog script on
the side. But there's something different about this helmet, and
I'm not gonna say it yet. Well, maybe you want
to come here to the Point and see for yourself.
And by the way, if you do, any veteran, current

(01:25):
member of the military or first responder who comes to
the Point tonight between now and six point thirty the
end of the show will get a free ticket to
the Fresno State Heroes Night football game against Southern on
Saturday night. Right, it's our way of thanking you for
your service. Coach Matt endswers here, and Coach did you
check to make sure the chicken rap was on the menu?
Because you're two for two?

Speaker 3 (01:46):
I'm gonna ask nicely. Nope, dial that up for me again.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
And I do remember that in the postgame. You may
not remember in all the chaos, but you said something
in your postgame interview that I was supposed to have
it tonight too. You have to have whatever you had
last week. Okay, I have to have the same thing.
What did I have last week? Then I have to
remember that. But I did hear that. The Point Patio
Bar and Bistro on the first day of next month,

(02:10):
is going to unveil some new menu items, including the
new cocktail menu. But also, have you ever had the
Brussels sprouts here?

Speaker 3 (02:17):
I'd probably maybe I know my wife loves Brussels sprouts,
so I probably have had maybe one or two of
hers before.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Brenda Brussels sprout that kind of has a nice illiterative
ring to it. But so the Brussels sprouts here are tasty,
but they're going to kick that up a notch. And
word on the patio is that they're going to have
loaded Brussels sprouts.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
I would try that anything with the word loaded.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
So that made me wonder what comes on loaded Brussels sprouts?
What would you put on loaded Brussels sprouts?

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Bacon?

Speaker 2 (02:47):
Uh huh, that bacon is a must. I think there
may even be egg on.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
There now that's going I would not have ever just egg.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
And have you ever had Brussels sprouts with hollandaise sauce?
I don't think, So that's like Brussels benedict.

Speaker 3 (03:03):
Yeah, right, a little bit of kind of an egg
or a breakfast theme there with a Russell sprouts.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
So it's probably going to be even better than it
sounds right now. Right if if they're going to make
it even better than what I'm describing, but that'll be
the loaded Brussels sprout. Soon to come to the menu.
Hear on the point patio bar and bistro, You're gonna
have the spicy chicken wrap, And I'm going to work
hard to remember what it was I got last week,
so I don't mess up your superstition here. Everyone I've
run into coach has said that was one of the

(03:32):
wildest games I've ever seen, that they've never seen another
game like that. So what was that like for you
on the sidelines to navigate the opening kick to the
final seconds coming off the clock.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
Well, you know, probably just trying to stay one step
ahead of a little bit of the chaos. What what
could happen next, you know, and or or what was
there the potential to happen next? But what was really
you know, satisfying, was to see our players and you
know how they rallied around each other, never really panicked.

(04:06):
Was there pressure, of course there was, but I think
we avoided that stress and and uh, you know, all
of a sudden, you know, falling apart. I mean, it
was the you and I talked about the first time
in two years that we were able to win a
game from behind in the fourth quarter, and that was exciting.
And it takes a it takes a team that's focused
and has a level of maturity to do stuff like that.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
That's a great point because you know, that was one
of the things people talked a lot about last year, is, hey,
the Dogs would get off to a good start. Obviously
you weren't here last year, but the Dogs would get
off to a good start and the game will get
away late and and you're right, even going back to
the year before that, it had been a while since
that happened. And you just hit on what you think
was the reason that happened. And I just want to

(04:46):
make sure everyone heard that. It's not that you have
one player who's a superhero or you know, you're the
most genius coach of all time. That's that's there's I'm
not saying or not. I'm just saying, I know that's
not what you're saying. It you're talking about who you
guys can be collectively because of the trust and relationships
that have been built.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yeah, exactly, in the preparation that goes into you know,
how we practice Monday through Friday. You know, we we'd
like to think that we're, if not the best prepared team,
we're one of the best prepared teams in the country.
And our our kids have embraced that. They know that
we're gonna we're gonna cover everything. We're gonna look under
every rock. We're going to make sure that there's nothing

(05:28):
that we're gonna leave the chance or to hope's not
a very good strategy. And uh, you know, so when
we go into games and we have to have a
two minute droll or you know, there's a situation that
arises itself, like a punt that was we're able to
respond to it accurately and and and hey, we've been
in that moment before, through our training and through our preparation.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Well, who enjoyed that game Saturday in core Valles. Huh boy,
that was a doozy. The Bulldogs are two in one.
They'll try to make it three straight wins Saturday, seven
o'clock against the Southern Jaguars. Southern University Baton Rouge, Louisiana,
coming all the way out here. Historically Black College or
University HBCU, as many of you know and famous for

(06:13):
the band have you ever watched any clips of what
their band actually does.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
I the only time I watch, usually during the week,
I watched the television or the TV copies of the games,
and just you know, from what I saw a little
bit on the TV copy of their most recent game
or their game against Alabama State. So I'm not privy
or up to speed probably on how good they are.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
They're athletes, I'll say, of fact, when you see them
do what they do, and you'll see this Saturday night,
not only the incredible Fresno State Bulldog marching band, but
you will see the Human Jukebox, which is what they
call the Southern University band. Made me wonder if there's
ever been a year where there was someone who was
both in the band and on the team, because some
of the moves that the band does require that same

(06:59):
kind of athleticism that maybe a wide out or a
running back.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
Yeah, it'd be tough to be difficult that you would
be burning the candle at both ends if you did
something like that.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
Be a Dion Sanders kind of thing, right. Deon Sanders
started his college coaching career in their conference in the Swack,
but the Southern University Jaguars are here Saturday night seven
o'clock to kick. Our pregame coverage will start at five o'clock.
We're here with coach matt Ends here till six thirty.
Dylan Lynch, the senior kicker, is going to join us
as well. Yeah, you can cheer for Dylan. He's one

(07:30):
of the stars of the week for the lou Grozo Award,
the award at the end of the year given to
the nation's best kicker. They picked three kickers this week
and he was one of them and had another national
recognition this week. We'll talk about Dylan and to Dylan
a little bit, but right now, let's just go after
one of the topics that I know is going to
come back because everybody asked me, I know they ask you.
Everyone always fixates on the quarterback, and when you look

(07:53):
at Saturday's game, there was a higher volume of passing
in the first half in the second half, and people
want to read into that. But what I think you
emphasized on Monday, if I was hearing you correctly, was
that what we should really take the most from or
put the most weight on, was the two minute drill
that you just referenced. When the games on the line,
and EJ. Wonder needed to get your offense and position

(08:14):
for Dylan Lynch to put you in front. He found
a way to do that. He did exactly.

Speaker 3 (08:18):
I mean we went into that two minute period with
three timeouts and we walked out of it with three
timeouts because we never never got in a situation. I
mean it was chunk out of bounds, chunk out of bounds.
Very efficient. You know, he saw what he saw, you know,
And again EJ was what thirteen of eighteen on Saturday,
I think we dropped back to throw the ball twenty two,

(08:39):
twenty three times, no socks giving up again, took off
on one of those and turned it into what a
thirty yard touchdown run. Yeah, and so you know that's
I'm as excited as that because that's a positive play.
If you don't like what's there and teams want to
continue to play us and back to the ball defense,
then you know, take what you can get out of bounds,
score touchdown here or there, and let's live to play

(09:00):
another down.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
Is that something you've seen throughout your career that that position,
more than any other, is the toughest one from which
to please everyone.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
Oh, of course it is. I mean, there's only I mean,
it's the toughest one to play, it's the most competitive one.
I mean, I've had numerous conversations with backup quarterbacks and
talked about you know, there's only I mean, if you
look at the West Coast, there's what maybe a dozen
starting quarterback Division one quarterbacks on the West Coast. I
mean there's sixty or seventy starting alignment on the West Coast,

(09:36):
but only twelve or only twelve quarterbacks. And so you know,
again I get it, you know, the backup quarterbacks everyone's
favorite player. But at the same time, you know, we're
winning ball games, and we have a group of people
on that football team that trust EJ. And he's very workmanlike,
he goes about his business, very mature, and he's going

(09:57):
to continue to get better. I mean, I've I think,
knowing his where he's come from, and and and and
his background, he's throwing a ton of yards, has had
a ton of touchdowns. But I know that this is
the first time he feels like he has a run
game to compliment himself as well, and so I think
that's exciting and and and and he's thrilled to be
behind an offensive line that you know takes pride in

(10:18):
the product that they put out there.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
Boy, is there ever a strong run game for Fresno State?
And we can talk about that when we come back.
But he became part of that strong running game the
other night, I think, And that's part of quarterback decision making.
It is not only you know, pulling the trigger to run,
but having the courage to put your body out there.
And he doesn't seem to lack courage.

Speaker 3 (10:37):
No, he doesn't. He doesn't. He's a team guy. He's
team first all the way. And that's what we need. Uh,
that's what makes the Fresnel State unique and special.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
Just to satisfy everyone who I know, they're going to
throw some more questions our way too. Is there maybe
one thing, as you talked about, he's going to keep
getting better? Is there like a next step that maybe
this game provides the opportunity for him to take in
terms of building more confidence himself and for his teammates
and his play.

Speaker 3 (11:02):
Well, I just think, you know, as a staff, we
need to continue to put him in good situations. You know,
there's nothing wrong with me. He's completing about seventy percent
of his passes right now, and so you know he's
doing that at a high clip. He's taking what teams
are giving him. He's making them pay for playing off coverage.
He'll take access throws, He'll make you know, solid decisions.
Just you know, of course, we got to protect the ball,

(11:23):
and everyone knows that we got to protect the team
because the ball is the team. And so you know,
as we continue to navigate and and wrap up our
non con game and get in the conference, that's always
a that's that's that's one of those things as a
coach you're going to talk about every week, every day,
is that we have to have great ball security from
our skilled players and our quarterback.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
When you've gone two weeks in a row without being sacked,
it would be pretty cool to do that for a
third week and not turn the ball over.

Speaker 3 (11:51):
Making moves almost like a coach's dreams continue to get
better every day. Yeah, you're exactly right.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
He's coach Matt Enz. We're here at the point, Pattiobar
and beast. We're going to be here till six thirty.
Dylan Lynch, Bulldog seen your kicker is on his way.

join us at the Point tonight and you'll get a
free ticket to Saturday Nights Heroes Night game against Southern

(12:18):
Did you guys figure out what's different about the helmet yet?
Anybody figure it out? You might have to come look close.
Maybe we can do that in the commercial break back
right after this from the Point Patti Obarnbistro the Bulldog
Football Hour on the Bulldog Sports Network. From their field.

Speaker 4 (12:31):

Go Dogs, Welcome back to the Bulldogs Football Hour. Got
some guesses on what's different about the helmet for Saturday
Night Bulldogs is in script on the side with the red,
white and blue a couple of people. Steve from the
Quarterback Club was here again tonight. Thanks again for those

(15:51):
Candloup Steve. By the way, I shared a few coach
had Steven got one of his house good stuff people
guessed and Kay mcbe longtime got club a hero over there.
They both guessed that it doesn't have the feathers for
the Native American heritage. That'll be later this year. When
you see that helmet, thanks to our friends at Table
Mountain Casino Resort. But the difference here is is right

(16:13):
there on the back. Have you seen that yet, coach, Yeah,
you had a hand in it. I know about it
really well. See that the green vee there, it looks
from your angle there a smudge. That's not a smudge.
You want to tell everybody what that creature is their.

Speaker 3 (16:24):
Coach, Yeah, that's a griffin. And we partnered with the
pilots from the one hundred and forty fourth. They came
into a fall camp and kind of sat through a day.
They wanted to see how we operated and when our
organization was like and we felt like, you know, because
of the relationship and because for I mean, I've been

(16:44):
here for about fifty practices now and our players have
been here some for a lot more than that. But
every day at about eight thirty, we stop. Everything stops.
Everyone looks up because the fighters are flying over our
practice fields. And so we wanted just to you know,
do something to you know, let those guys know that
we appreciate what they do, what they do on a

(17:06):
daily basis, and so for this week, of course, the
Bulldogs is red, white and blue on the script, but
we put the Griffin logo that represents all the people
out at one hundred and forty fourth over the V.
I thought two great things, that the Green V and
the Griffins. It takes a community and Fresno's an unbelievable one.
And you know, we're we're fortunate to have that group

(17:26):
of people in those pilots here.

Speaker 2 (17:28):
We sure are. And the Green V is protected by
the Griffins right in the air. The one ninety fourth
Fighter Squadron or the one forty fourth Fighter Wing of
the Air National Guard. It is hard not to look
when you hear them, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
I'm fifty plus years old, and every time they fly over,
I'm looking at them like, man, I would to be
cool to ride in one of those. And just you know,
usually when the couple of them will will tilt the
wings when they fly over, and they say they're always
saying hello when they do that, and so we appreciate them.
And we'll have a couple of them lead us out
of the locker room tomorrow as well, some of the pilots.

Speaker 2 (18:02):
I heard about that, and they maybe even running down
the ramp in front of the team.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
They'll be in front of the team leading us out.

Speaker 2 (18:08):
We know they're fast in the air, we'll see what
kind of speed they have on the ground. So that's
something to watch for on Saturday. Heroes Night. Makes me
wonder how many veterans we have out here On the
patio of the Patio Barnbistro, the Point Patio Barnbistro, there's
a veteran right there. There's a couple other pilots sitting
at that table back there who didn't raise their hand,
but I'm ratting them out too. Yeah, those two husband

(18:29):
and wife, Scott and Linda too, retired Air Force officers.
Speaking of the airport where those F fifteens operate, the Griffins.
You were there, bright and early Monday morning, before six o'clock,
shaking hands with a lot of pretty special people. Thank
you for saluting our central Valley on our flight. Veterans,
I know you shared a lot with the vets. Maybe

(18:51):
you can share with the people here at the point
and on the radio why that was so important to you.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
You know, I had a great uncle that served in
World War Two, probably passed away ten twelve years ago.
One of the last things he got to do was
go on on an honor flight himself real quick. I
grew up on Fairfield Farm. We all lived within about
a tenth of a mile, my grandfather, my great uncle,

(19:17):
my dad, and so he was part of me growing
up on the farm, and so when I saw those men,
it took me back and.

Speaker 2 (19:27):
It is right now. I can see it, we can
hear it, and that carries a lot of weight. Those
guys really, I think felt your sincerity and that goes
a long way. And thanks to everyone who came to
the airport last night and welcomed those seventy three veterans home.
Some of those people are on the flight back there,
Peter and Jennifer. I know Alan's been a guardian before
and he was there last night and it was an
awesome homecoming and it's one of the best things our

(19:49):
community does. And Coach, now you're part of the Honor
Flight family. So thanks for that.

Speaker 3 (19:53):
Pet. I loved it.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
And someday I'd love to hear more about your great
uncle and the stories he told you, because I'm sure
he told you a few on Fairfield.

Speaker 3 (19:59):
Farm, there were there were some stories.

Speaker 2 (20:02):
Let's talk some more football, Southern Jaguars. How do you
get a scouting report on a team from Baton Rouge,
Louisiana that plays at a different level but does have
some films so far three games in and already a
change at quarterback.

Speaker 3 (20:14):
Right, Well, you dive into the film. You know what
you see is what you anticipate you're going to get.
But you know you got to you got to just
continue to prepare and you know, prepare for the unexpected too.
And so they are going to have a change at
quarterback and it sounds like that's going to be due
to an injury to their what was their starter in
game one. I think it was a concussion. It's stilling

(20:36):
concussion protocol. But at the same time, you know, I think,
you know, they provide some challenges. They have some really
good players. They have a talented quarterback who has about
two hundred yards rushing three hundred passing. They got a
defensive end that had twenty seven TFLs in twenty twenty
four and is a tremendous player. And so we're gonna
have to be prepared. And we know just because of

(20:57):
their location, they have access to really talented kids. And
so I'm sure having been in an FCS program and
understanding the excitement that playing an FBS school can create,
we had that conversation, you know, multiple times, we need
to be prepared for that. They've circled this game, and
you know, there is a huge, you know, bullseye on

(21:18):
this game. And I get it because I've been I've
been in those shoes before where you know, I've tried
to challenge guys and I told them a story about
you know, when we played Iowa that uh, we created
a fake recruiting profile and every kid on our team
that traveled and then at that night in the in
the in the team meeting, I threw them all in
the garbage. I said, that's what I would did to
yours too, And you know, just me because you're motivating,

(21:40):
You're you're there playing at a higher level. And I
know Brian Farrence kind of looked at me like, oh man, yeah,
but you take any you know, it's a chip on
the shoulder, just the same things that you know, we
want our players to have every week. We know we're
gonna get We're gonna get everyone's best because we're Fresno State.

Speaker 2 (21:58):
I'm just imagining too, there'll be a little bit of
a dynamic for the Jaguars that maybe your team's going
to experience a bit next week. You'll probably have a
lot of players next week it's their first time going
to Hawaii. There are probably a lot of Southern Jaguars.
Most of their roster is from Louisiana. There's never been
to California before. They're probably going to get here and
start looking for the beach probably.

Speaker 3 (22:17):
Probably, and then they're gonna see the mountains. But you know,
you're exactly right, it's a big trip. Anytime you take
a trip of any length, like last weekend was an
hour and fifteen minutes, I mean it was it was easy.
I mean it was It was no different than you know,
driving up you know, to to Modesto. Yeah, but you
know this now, this is going to be a significant
trip for them, and so seven o'clock start. I think

(22:39):
they're usually used to playing day games and this sole
but we got to be ready for their best and
when we need to, we need to start fast. That
that that is the message that we've continually talked about.
It's all about the energy and execution of our of
our team.

Speaker 2 (22:51):
This weekend, well, there are sure were some fun moments
in Corp Vallas and Saturday night it's going to be
a big party. In fact, they call it the biggest
party in the Valley. Have you heard that? At Valley
Children Stadium seven o'clock kick against the Southern Jaguars. Five
o'clock will be our pregame coverage. Again, if you're a veteran,
if you're serving in the armed forces, now, if you're
a first responder, come join us at the point. Eat
some great food like that played of Brussels sprouts. The

(23:13):
gym is pounding over there. It's not loaded yet. You
have to wait till October first for the loaded Brussels
sprouts here at the Point Patio Bar and Bistro. But
you can ask them for the matt En special, which
is a spicy chicken rat.

Speaker 3 (23:24):
That's you're kind of letting the secret out of the
biog right now. Oh, I don't know if it's really
on the menu. They just kind of did it for me.

Speaker 2 (23:32):
Well, then if people want to be like you, they
can ask for what you had, right, And I was
thank you know, we have an engineer, Eric Astlin, who's
here every week and remembers things that I don't. And
he remembered that I had the grilled peach salad with
a slice fresh hal of pano on top. So as
long as the peach salad still on the menu, guys,
I know that seasonal still have peaches. It's still it. Okay,

(23:53):
thank you, we're safe, coach. We're going to take a break.
We'll talk some more football when we come back. Come

that Pat Hill sees things coming before they happened. Pack
called out a touchdown when EJ was on the twenty

he had to run or how smart Pat is. By
the way, speaking of Bulldogs, if you come here to
the Point Patio Bar and Bistro, not only can you
see a little football on TV, you can see the
Yankees game. Aaron Judge is already Homer twice tonight. By
the way, the best baseball player on the player. We've
got coach Matt Enz here talking about Saturday night seven

(28:03):
o'clock Heroes Night. Bulldogs will wear special helmets. They'll have
some pilots from the Griffins of the one ninety fourth
Fighter Squadron run out with them. They're honoring the Griffins
on those helmets with the actual Griffin flying through the
green V on the back. They'd love to see you
veterans are going to be honored throughout the game and
other heroes in our community. There's even a special flag
football game. If you're there early, go to the soccer

(28:24):
field at four o'clock because our local helicopter Universe unit,
the eleven six tasm G. You'll be out there. They're
feeding a thousand veterans and they have a flag football
contest between the flight crews, the rotors and the mechanics
the wrenches. Last year, the quarterbacks were David Carr and
Marcus mcmrion. Got a couple other celebrity quarterbacks lined up
this year. Make sure you show up Saturday to find out.

(28:47):
Coach will get Dylan Lynch to join us here in
a minute. But here's some questions coming in. I don't
know if this is in your baileywick here. Ariana wants
to know. Can I do the hot dog race?

Speaker 17 (28:58):
Please?

Speaker 2 (28:59):
You want to do the hot dog raise?

Speaker 3 (29:00):
That is not in my wheelhouse, but I will advocate
for it.

Speaker 2 (29:05):
Usually the people are in charge of that sit at
that table over there, so keep your eyes on that
table and ask nicely. We'll see what happened. You're welcome
guys over there. All right, here's another question coming and
this is from Ray, who's out here on the patio
at the point patio barromdistro. I mean, who doesn't want
to do the hot dog race and have Pat Hill
announce you winning the hot dog race? But Ray wants
to know two wins in a row. How excited is

(29:27):
the locker room? Are they, you know, feeling extra confident
looking for a third straight or is everyone still focused
and too tuned in? Well that's what you're waiting to
find out.

Speaker 3 (29:38):
Yeah, Well, no, we've emphasized that we need to make
sure that we're locked in and you know, the bulldogs
haven't arrived or we don't got this. We need to
make sure that we're working hard and and you know
I told him, you know, we've talked about it numerous times.
The team that'll beat us first to be the one
our own. If we don't execute, we don't play well.

Speaker 2 (30:01):
Simple as that it is. And I want to have
you talk about Dylan Lynch before we welcome him for
the next segment. But here's a question about special teams
on the x app with the hashtag ask f this.
Ask FS this comes from the dog Father good handle
there on the x app. He says, without giving away

(30:21):
too much, has Coach Baxter shared any special team strategy
with you that you hadn't heard prior to working with him.

Speaker 3 (30:30):
Oh, there is. Everyone has their own way of doing things.
And John does a tremendous job with special teams, and
you know it has had years of years of experience
and years of success, and so I continue to learn things.
And that's what's great. We have a tremendous staff with
the wealth of knowledge, and not only John, but it's
it's it's both coordinators, it's our assistant coaches. They all

(30:52):
bring something to the table. They're all ready to game plan.
They all have tremendous ideas, and I think that's what
makes coming to work every day, you know, enjoyable for me.
And then the young men that we could work with
and we get a we get a you know, prepare
every week. You know they're they're excited to get better
and you see that just in their effort and their
energy that they bring to practice.

Speaker 2 (31:11):
You know, it's been said forever, You've heard it a
million times that you know you want your o linemen
to be anonymous, that the only time that they hear
their name is when they get flagged for something. And
that's kind of how you want your long snapper to be, too, right,
I mean probably right. Maybe he's making tackles every once
in a while, but it sure seemed to me I
could even see a practice. I mean, Wes Brown is
sticking his chest out a little more. I think everybody

(31:32):
on the team appreciated your long snapper. After watching the
game against Oregon State.

Speaker 3 (31:36):
Yeah, that was a that was a unique scenario, not
one that I've ever seen before, you know. And and
what's what what was unique is you know, we we
knew the starter was going to be out, you know, pregame,
But the intel was that oldest young man, he was
the starter in twenty twenty four, and so it wasn't
as if this was his first game or first collegian

(31:56):
experience and had had plenty of snaps. We we want
watch all those things pregame, you'll, how are people snapping?
It's the it's more about time how fast of a
snaper is he than accuracy. And I don't know, you
don't wish that upon anybody. And so but it was
it created for a unique you know game. Put it

(32:18):
that way.

Speaker 2 (32:19):
I think you said it well before. You're just wondering
what's next? What else haven't we seen that could possibly
happen today? We're looking to see a lot of good
things at Valley Children Stadium Saturday night, including the special
Heroes Night helmets. The Bulldogs will be sporting coach answers here,
the helmets here. And if you're a veteran, if you're
in the military now, if you're a first responder, if
you're here, if you come join us here before the

(32:40):
end of the show at six thirty, we'll have a
free ticket to Saturday night's game for you. Here's one
more question before we catch the break. This is from
a red Wave on the x app and he's here tonight,
sitting right over there. He says, what's the role of
academics in the NIL era? Never hear about it anymore?

Speaker 3 (32:58):
Well, I unfortunate that you don't, but it's still it's
an important piece. Weekly I have a meeting with our
academic support personnel, uh and then during the non when
it's off season, our whole staff will meet with them.
But you know, we talk to every single young man
when they come in and we recruit him. We talk about,
you know, creating an unbelievable valued experience, and that means

(33:21):
you're gonna play with great people. You know, people that
are are wired the same way Bulldog wired. People you're
gonna have you know, you're gonna get a degree, and
we're gonna and we're gonna hopefully compete for championships and
then whatever happens after that, we're gonna give you tools
to be successful. So we have tremendous academic support. I
want to think in the spring we had maybe our

(33:41):
highest GPA that we've had as a football team over
the course of the last three or four years, which is
tremendous when you can you know, and again that's the standard. Now,
you know how you do one things, how you do everything,
and it's tough to be great on fourth down when
you're when you're lacking in a classroom, and so it's
easier for me just to cold to everyone do a

(34:01):
high standard all the time. And our kids do that,
and so it's exciting to see they're having success. They're there.
I think we had more Mountain West all academic than
any other any other institution in the league, and so
it's there, you know, we're we're doing a great job. Ashley,
our academic coordinator, does a tremendous job. We'd be lost

(34:22):
without her. And so you know, like I said, she
she drives the ship and and we just try to
facilitate and help her, you know, navigate it.

Speaker 2 (34:31):
That makes sense, all right, we got a good answer.
It's time for a break. When we come back, Coach
Edsel'll stick around. Dylan Lynch will join us. The Bulldogs
senior kicker. I wonder if he picks up his water
glass left handed or right handed. I don't know the answer,
but we'll let him answer when he comes back. The
Bulldog Football Hour here at the point. Pattiobar and Bistro
come join us only halfway there on the Bulldog Sports

Speaker 10 (34:52):

Conference selection Henry, Yeah no, that's Embry. That's the right corner, Embrey,
Jacarrie Emery seals a full lot victory.

Speaker 2 (38:19):
The interception return for a touchdown. I love listening to
Pat Hill. You can hear him Saturday night, seven o'clock
kick Fresno State against Southern. Maybe he'll bring back that
turkey impression. Did you guys hear Pat Hill's wild turkey
last week? It was pretty good. He did it about
one hundred times. It was fun. Have you heard of yet, Coach?

Speaker 3 (38:40):
I have not?

Speaker 2 (38:41):
All right, maybe he'll do it for you. I'm sure
on command. Matt Ens is here and we're joined now,
coach by a veteran that you know. Less than a
year ago you didn't know, and now you've gotten to know,
and you had to rely on him in a key
situation on Saturday. What have you appreciated about your senior
placekicker Dylan Lynch?

Speaker 3 (39:00):
His consistency, you know, his approach, He comes to practice
ready every day and uh, you know I say this
with with you know, a huge compliment Dylan. Dylan isn't
like most specialist. I think he has a little bit more.
Uh he's he's a tough kid and I appreciate that,
you know. You know, I think when you can have
a specialist who still appreciates the football part of it,

(39:23):
you know, he wants I mean I've seen him on
kickoff cover he tries to be one of the first
ones down there and trying to get in on the
pile and stuff. And I still appreciate that stuff. I mean,
you know, toughness wins even when you're a specialist. And
you know, he's done a great job, and I was
I could be more happy for a young man last
week and to see his enthusiasm after hitting that that
game what was the game winner right there? Uh you

(39:46):
know that was big time. That was big time for
him and validated you know, just what we're doing as
a program, and and it only bigger and better things
are coming up.

Speaker 2 (39:54):
For doing well that sounds like the perfect time to
talk to Dylan Lynch number forty. The first time Bulldog
fans really got to know him was that incredible on
side kick against San Diego State. Remember that one of
the most incredible, ridiculous comebacks of all time. Even had
me saying the word defibrillater on the radio for the
first time ever that night. But Dylan, since coach, brought

(40:16):
up this mentality of not just a kicker, what were
you more proud of Saturday and Corvallis the game winning
field goal or that tackle you made on the Bulldog
sideline of their kick returner.

Speaker 17 (40:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 22 (40:28):
Probably the easy answer would obviously be that game winner.
It came down to a lot of things, and you know,
week in and week out, we practiced this, and when
it came down to that situation, you know, I was ready.
I was prepared, and especially with my coaches and teammates
out of my back, I mean, there's no doubt in
my mind I was going to go out and bang it.

Speaker 17 (40:47):
So I was happy with the results.

Speaker 2 (40:50):
I think the Bulldog fans were pretty happy with the
results as well. Mentioned Dylan was one of three kickers
chosen nationally this week as Lou Grozo Awards Stars of
the Week Chris Sailor Kicking, which the Kicking Camp Pickture
is the number one guy in the country this week
as well. And you just described, you know, kind of
that moment. It makes me wonder how much of a

(41:10):
moment like that is mental and how much is physical.

Speaker 22 (41:15):
I would probably sound lean on the sixty forty sixty
being the mental side of everything. When it comes down
to it, it's what you have going on through your
head means how you want to look at it, the
aspects of everything.

Speaker 2 (41:30):
You know.

Speaker 22 (41:30):
When Coach came in, the biggest thing I kind of
took from him was the process oriented mindset of everything.

Speaker 17 (41:36):
And when I looked at stuff like.

Speaker 22 (41:37):
That, I kind of was able to relock in and
kind of understand my own job and what I had
to do on that certain day to execute what I
was doing.

Speaker 2 (41:47):
Well, you got it done. It Just favor moving that
microphone a little close to your mouth just so everyone
can hear you there. And this is this is kind
of a crazy question, but I'm just thinking, I'm trying
to put myself in your shoes and that game Coach
and I were just talking about it. We saw something
none of us had ever seen before, where the other
team just couldn't snap the ball on special teams and
you wouldn't even think about that before the game. But

(42:09):
then once you see the other team doing that, does
that sneak into your head like could that happen to us?

Speaker 22 (42:14):
You know, I don't believe that that could happen to us.
I believe that we're in a great spot and it's
very unfortunate that it did happen to him. You know,
you never wish that upon any team, and because I mean,
you don't want to be in those shoes, that's what
has what's going on with him, and so to see that,
it's very unfortunate and I don't wish that up on anybody.

Speaker 2 (42:35):
Yeah, the coach said something similar. Coach, when you came in,
we talked about this last week and some of the
guys because Roland Fulwood was here and the player who
really benefited from this clean slate that you've talked about
that every player had. And you know, coming in when
you're evaluating all the kickers, what was the first thing
that you saw in Dylan that said, yeah, I know

(42:56):
we can really count on this young man.

Speaker 3 (42:58):
Well, you know, Dylan got a little edge to him,
and I appreciate that. And so you know, when I
had my spring meeting with him, he had a little
bit of an edge. And he's got you know, he's
uber confident. But you know, we we again continue to
challenge him. You know, that needs to that needs to
be success on the field too, and we got to
make those kicks. And and he's done a great job.

(43:20):
I mean, everything we've asked him to do from a
kickoff standpoint, I mean we're we're knocking you know, returners
down inside the twenty yard line consistently. He's hitting his
spots and that's just as important as anything, you know,
all the pats and field goals. But he's doing a
tremendous job in the kickoff and hitting his spots and
giving us a chance to make people have to drive
the long field. So having just all that value I

(43:42):
think is big. And I hopefully he's enjoying his experience
and then we need we're gonna get to count on him,
if you know, another couple of times this year, you know,
but the consistency piece is what we really need. And
and and you get to see that we rapid fire
these guys that practice sometimes and what I that's what
I enjoy is how they're able to just handle Hey,
line up and go, line up and go. You don't
get a chance to think about it. You don't get

(44:03):
a chance to overthink about it sometimes when you're when
you're eighteen to twenty two year old. He gets in
there and just lets it go and then has success.

Speaker 2 (44:12):
And he said he's got that toughness in him. I
think he's got a little Bakersfield in him. Huh is
there right? That's right? I get to sense you. I mean,
it's a big valley and we've had a lot of
great bulldogs from Bakersfield, A couple guys named Carr come
to mind, but even beyond that, some great dogs from
Kerrn County. What does that mean to you? I see
your parents at all the games. What does it mean
to you to represent this green V on the back

(44:34):
of the helmet that now has got that griffin going
through it for Heroes nine?

Speaker 22 (44:37):
Of course, you know, being obviously born and raised in Bakersfield,
it's so I take it personally as a great thing.
You know, a lot of people that grow up in
the valley, they don't take it lately, hard working man,
hardworking with women, and you know he'd don't take that
lightly and be able to especially be born and raised

(44:57):
in Bakersfield and go uh north an hour forty the
Presno would be able to play the game.

Speaker 17 (45:02):
I love.

Speaker 22 (45:03):
I'm gonna ask for any more ease, and so I'm
just thankful to be doing what I'm doing.

Speaker 2 (45:07):
Was there any part of you that that was a
little hard for, because especially in the high school ranks,
I mean, there's pretty good rivalry between Bakersfield and the
Fresnel Clovis schools, And you know, anybody from Presnel Clovis
who has to play a playoff game in Bakersfield thinks
the officials are going to take care of it for him,
and vice versa Bakersfield people coming up here. So did
you have to get over a predisposition against Fresno.

Speaker 22 (45:28):
You know, there's definitely some stuff that's held on in
the locker room. You know a lot of the boys
from Buchanan, you know, we don't really like the Bears
around here.

Speaker 2 (45:36):
But I thought I might hear that. Yeah, but they're.

Speaker 22 (45:40):
Great, man. I love being around them, and you know,
I do get over it. And we're all playing the
game we love. So it's fun.

Speaker 2 (45:48):
Well, we're gonna catch one final break. Come back with
more from Dylan Lynch coach. I'll let you enjoy the
spicy chicken raps if anyone else has the courage to
order it, I'll get my peach salad with the Hall
of Pano anything else you want the Red Wave to
be thinking about before Saturday night, seven o'clock when that
kick comes.

Speaker 3 (46:04):
I just hope that we the Red Wave shows up
and uh, I know our players, we had a solid
day to day. I'm super excited about it. Anytime we
get to play at home, you know, we have a
we have a significant home field advantage and it's because
of the Red Wave, and so I hope they're there early.
I hope they're loud, make it almost impossible for Southern
to operate on third down. And and let's be excited

(46:26):
for these young men. They put a they put a
lot of hard work and energy into it, and like
like Dylan said, they want to represent the Green v
they want to represent that bulldog on the on the
side of the helmet. And so you know, we're gonna
do this together, Red Wave and the team and we're
the Valley's team and we want to represent it the
right way.

Speaker 2 (46:43):
And I thought, I want more question that I want
to ask you before I let you go, because I
meant to ask it earlier. We had to take a
commercial break. You mentioned we're talking about this this new
Green v logo just for this game with the Griffin
logo from the one ninety fourth Fighter Squadron that's right
on the back there, and you're talking about every time
they fly over, you look up and you wonder what
it would feel like. Have you ever had a chance
to go on a fighter Joe.

Speaker 3 (47:04):
I have not. I have not. Would you do it?
I would in a heartbeat. You would have to ask
me twice. I would be running to the to the aircraft.
You've heard what happens to people who do that sometimes.
What's that?

Speaker 2 (47:16):
What it can do to your stomach?

Speaker 3 (47:17):
And I'm not worried. If you're ready, I want to
check that box.

Speaker 2 (47:22):
All right, Well, let's see if we can make that happen.
Who would sign up to watch Coach do the pregame flyover?

Speaker 3 (47:27):
Right?

Speaker 5 (47:28):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (47:29):
Maybe someday we'll get to see him up in the
air with the one ninety fourth Fighter Squadron. Coach thanks
a lot, good luck.

Speaker 3 (47:34):
I appreciate it. Thank you, guys, Dylan, thank you all.

Speaker 2 (47:37):
Right, he's coach matt Ens. We'll put the kicker in
the crosshairs when we come back. If you've got a

Brown Snap is good. Virdugo's hold is down. Dylan Lynch
is good, more than enough leg and it hits those
All State hands right in the pinky. Dylan Lynch just
put Fresno State back on top which twenty nine seconds left. Yeah,
that was the game winning field goal Saturday in Corps
Vallis and the young man who owns that left foot

(51:50):
that booted it. Dylan Lynch is with us. We're here
till six thirty. If you don't have tickets for Saturday
night's game yet, you get a free one. If you're
serving in our armed forces, or if you have have
or if you're a first responder, come join us here
at the point and we'll get you squared away. Dylan,
when did you realize that you were left footed not
right footed?

Speaker 17 (52:11):
Growing up?

Speaker 22 (52:12):
I played soccer used both feet, but they soon realized
my left foot was stronger, and.

Speaker 17 (52:17):
So I stick with it.

Speaker 2 (52:19):
What hand are you write with?

Speaker 3 (52:21):
Right?

Speaker 17 (52:21):
With my right hand?

Speaker 2 (52:22):
So you throw baseball with your right hand to I do,
But the left foot stronger, the left foot strong? Are
you pretty in general ambidextrous? Or is it just this
is the uniqueness that with your foot it's the left,
with everything else is the right.

Speaker 17 (52:37):
Yeah, that's it. I mean I kick left, everything else right.

Speaker 2 (52:41):
How far do you think you could kick one with
your right foot?

Speaker 22 (52:46):
I could probably get back to forty yards? Yeah, and yeah,
I believe in myself to get forty yards.

Speaker 17 (52:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (52:52):
I'm not doubting you know. I'm not questioning you one bit.
Dylan Lynch, Bulldogs seeing your kicker once again, someone who's
on the watch list for the Lookeros Award, which goes
to the nation's best kicker. Have you ever watched film
that name? Everyone knows the name Luke Rosa because he's
the awards named after. Have you ever seen film of
Luke Rosa when he kicked? I'm not actually no, he
was a drop kicker, was he really?

Speaker 3 (53:14):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (53:14):
So like none of this soccer style stuff, straight on
dropped the football boom.

Speaker 17 (53:18):
You ain't seen that in a while.

Speaker 2 (53:19):
No, have you ever tried it?

Speaker 17 (53:21):
No?

Speaker 2 (53:22):
Yeah, don't mess with it. Don't mess with what you're
doing right, you know I mentioned it earlier, the on
side kick and that game back in twenty twenty two,
Bulldogs wouldn't have been Mountain West Championships champions without that
ridiculous comeback against San Diego State. Everyone here on the
patio was there that right night, right until the very
end of the game, because all the Fresno and Clovis

(53:44):
was there. Apparently we had five hundred thousand people there
that night if you listened to everyone who says they
were there. But Dylan was there. And Dylan, you weren't
the starting kicker at the time, but you were better
at that and you had that opportunity to go out
there and produced that on side kick. How many times
since that play happened have you gone back and watched

(54:06):
it or just played it back in your mind and said, Wow,
that really happened.

Speaker 22 (54:09):
You know, that was probably my moment when I first
came into college football, and from that point on, you know,
I've kind of been got a couple of nicknames from
that on side.

Speaker 17 (54:20):
Kick, and I've enjoyed every moment.

Speaker 22 (54:22):
I got a lot of praise for it, coming in
being the freshman and being able to hit that and
advance our team off to what ended up being Mount
West championship.

Speaker 17 (54:29):
So it is, I mean a great feeling.

Speaker 2 (54:31):
Yeah, none of that other stuff would have happened if
you didn't get that. You had one job in that
game exactly in one moment, do or die moment. But
it didn't seem like you were feeling any pressure anything.

Speaker 22 (54:42):
I didn't know what to expect, to be honest with
you know, I went out there and.

Speaker 2 (54:45):
Kicked the ball. And you said you got a couple
nicknames from.

Speaker 17 (54:48):
That, I do. Yeah, do you care to share one?
That's uh.

Speaker 22 (54:54):
The nickname that stuck around was boy Woner and I
was actually coach JD that gave me that nickname.

Speaker 2 (55:00):
Yeah, so they still call you that go shit he does.

Speaker 17 (55:03):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (55:03):
I wonder how old you'll be when he stops calling
you boy wondering.

Speaker 17 (55:07):
Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (55:08):
Yeah, that's yeah. And and you said a couple of them,
was the other one one that you can't share on
the radio.

Speaker 17 (55:13):
Or yeah, we'll keep that one inside.

Speaker 3 (55:16):
All right? Fair enough?

Speaker 2 (55:18):
And and I'm sure there are a lot of inside
jokes and inside knowledge with your fellows specialists, because you
know the way practice works. You guys spend a lot
of time with each other. What's that like? What do
you appreciate about guys like your snapper, Wes Brown, your
punner now Nick Fordugo, Clay Lawrence, who's who's coming back
from injury? What do you appreciate about those guys?

Speaker 3 (55:40):
Oh?

Speaker 17 (55:40):
All of them?

Speaker 22 (55:41):
You know, they're They're a great, great men to have
around in a group. And I cherish every single one
of them. We've great created great bonds with each other,
and I believe that will grow up and still be
best friends and attend each other's weddings and things like that.
So I mean to have Wes Brann out there. He's
a very confident man and he definitely shows it. As well,

(56:06):
and I appreciate him for that, especially Nick Verdugo walking
in and getting the position to be the punter. He's
done extremely well and he's facilitated the coverage, and you know,
we're happy for what he's doing. Especially he is my
holder and I trust everything with him, and it's been
a pleasure to be able to both these men.

Speaker 2 (56:25):
Yeah, you know you mentioned that being the holder, trust
is required, isn't it. How long does that take to develop?
With say, if you had to switch holders next week,
how long would it take before you had absolute trust
and that guy to do that job.

Speaker 22 (56:40):
You know, I believe whoever we put out there, I
believe they're going to get the job done. They understand
the circumstance just as any other player would, and it's
it is a big deal. The ball is in their hands.
And you know, the saying is the ball's team, team
is the ball. And so to have someone out there
I put all my trust in him.

Speaker 2 (57:00):
Ball is the team. Team is the ball and laces out,
laces out? You want to explain to everybody. I think
most people get that, but maybe some people have never
heard about that. Why is it so important to have
the laces away? From your kick when your cleat is
hitting that pigskin.

Speaker 22 (57:16):
Of course, having laces out just allows the foot to
make better contact with the ball. And there's I guess
you call the sweet spot on the ball, which just
allows the ball to have more pop and I guess
you could say go further.

Speaker 17 (57:28):
So it's always pleasure to have the ball with the
lace is out.

Speaker 2 (57:32):
Hey man, we're talking to Dylan Lynch, Bulldogs Seenior place Kicker,
and Dylan, we mentioned you're from Bakersfield. We've got people
listening in Bakersfield right now on nine to seventy Fox
Sports Radio. They know you're hanging out at the Point tonight,
getting the shrimp tacos and gonna have a great time.
But is there a spot or two back home in
Kern County that anytime you go home, ask mom to

(57:52):
do some laundry, or just you know, you miss your folks,
you want to get back for a little bit. Is
there a spot that's a place that feels like home
for you.

Speaker 22 (58:00):
There's there's a couple of good spots that we have
down in Bakersfield. One more recently that's a good little
hangout area that we would typically go to. It's called
Rancho Grande, a little Mexican joint just right up down
the road, and you know we enjoy eating there. You
like the spicy, I'm not a big fan of the spice,
you know, No I can, I can. I can tolerate
a little bit of it.

Speaker 2 (58:21):
A little bit of it, all right, Roncho Grande, yea
in Baker's Field. It's maybe some of these folks are
gonna try that the next time they're cruising down the
ninety nine. I always have to stop in Delano at
the phil bake shop there off Cecillabag. Oh yeah, have
you ever been in there? Have not pretty good stuff.
I'm not as fancy as the Point and what we're
eating tonight and what we're gonna eat next week. Just
a reminder, next week's show is gonna be on Wednesday

(58:43):
night because the Bulldogs aren't gonna be here Thursday night.
They're leaving for Hawaii Thursday. So next week's program will
be at seven o'clock Wednesday night here at the Point
Patio Bar and Bistro. If you all can join us.
Is it different for you now? You're talking about being
in your friend's wedding someday? I guess you could be
like Boy Wonder the best man at that point or something.
But now you're a senior, You're not the freshman Boy

(59:05):
Wonder kicking the on side kick. Do you feel a
different level of responsibility or leadership just being one of
the older guys?

Speaker 22 (59:12):
You know, being a freshman, you definitely are trying to
find your way around things and especially trying to find
the people that you can connect with, and not now
being a senior is I have other responsibilities and I
enjoy them, being able to help others and especially the

(59:35):
people that are coming right after me. It's I enjoy
what I'm doing and it's nice to have it.

Speaker 3 (59:42):
Well.

Speaker 2 (59:42):
I think the Red Wave enjoyed what you did Saturday
in cor Vallas, right, Dylan Lynch, Bulldog Senior Kick or Dylan,
thanks for coming out. Enjoy those shrimp tacos and good
luck Saturday night. Thank you guys, Dylan Lynch, number forty
six in your program, hanging out here at the point tonight.
We'll see you here next week from seven eight The

Stuff You Should Know
Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
