On the Bulldog Sports Network from Learfield.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
This is the Bulldog Football Hour, presented by American pistachio growers,
powering the Valley.

Speaker 3 (00:11):
One nut at a time.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Also brought to you by Table Mountain Casino Resorts, Lucky
Days and Epic Nights, and by Pepsi, official soft drink
of Fresno State Athletics. Now live from the Point Pattio
Bar and Pistro, here's your host, the Voice of the Bulldogs,
Paul Leffler.

Speaker 4 (00:32):
Hey, Hey, it's great to be back out here at
the Point Patio Bar and Bistro. It's great to be
following a Fresno State football team that has three consecutive victories. Right,
Bulldogs winning their conference opener over New Mexico and Albuquerque
over the weekend, and this week they'll be in Las
Vegas an Allegiance Stadium a twelve thirty kickoff.

Speaker 5 (00:53):
And it's funny how things work.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
All of a sudden, the whole country is talking about
this football game for some things that have nothing to
do with what's gone on between the lines. We'll talk
about that with coach Well, you know what, I'm not gonna.

Speaker 5 (01:04):
Say his name.

Speaker 4 (01:04):
I want you to hear his name from the guy
who gets to say all the names at Valley Children's Stadium.
Next home game is October twelfth against an unbeaten right
now Washington State team. So if you don't have your
tickets yet, go Bulldogs dot com. And when you walk
into the stadium on October twelfth, this is the voice
you're gonna hear, Ladies and gentlemen, fresh off a win
in Albuquerque over New Mexico thirty eight to twenty one,

(01:26):
and getting ready to fly to Las Vegas to take
on UNLV.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
Head coach of your.

Speaker 4 (01:30):
Bulldogs, it is the one and only Tim Skipper.

Speaker 5 (01:36):
Hey, that kind of has me warmed up for basketball
season two.

Speaker 4 (01:41):
You'll hear that voice in the Save Mart Center Vance
Wahlberg and his Bulldogs open.

Speaker 5 (01:45):
Up November eighth. Ooh at home.

Speaker 4 (01:51):
That's Matt leeb by the way, the public address voice
of the Bulldogs and coach Skipper. Congratulations on three straight wins.
Thank you appreciate that. It feels good. When are a
conference opener is a big deal, isn't it?

Speaker 6 (02:04):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (02:04):
Big deal?

Speaker 7 (02:05):
Especially when it's on the road.

Speaker 6 (02:06):
I mean you're dealing with a lot of things and
the wind was there also some other nature wasn't trying
to help us either, so felt really good to win.

Speaker 5 (02:16):
When's the last time you played a game with that
much wind?

Speaker 7 (02:20):
Long time?

Speaker 6 (02:21):
It's probably back to my Carorad State days, where you know,
we're at the altitude and stuff all the time, so
you were dealing with wind the whole time.

Speaker 7 (02:30):
But then once I left there, I haven't dealt with
it since.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
When you're at Colorado State with coach mac O win there,
did you ever have a game on one of those
weekends where they actually shut down the interstate because it
was too win?

Speaker 7 (02:42):
Yeah, definitely, definitely.

Speaker 6 (02:44):
Yeah, that's when we have a police escort to the
stadium when it's just us, Like why do we have escort?

Speaker 5 (02:49):
There's big ricks overturned on the side of the because.

Speaker 7 (02:52):
That blew over. Yeah, all that stuff.

Speaker 6 (02:55):
Yeah, and then you're dealing with ice and everything else too,
so yeah.

Speaker 4 (02:59):
And then your punter gets into one and it goes
backwards because the wins went on the.

Speaker 8 (03:02):
Wrong one exactly right, So you just go for it
on four well, and there were some scenarios like that.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
The other night you guys were two for two on
fourth down. That was a big piece of what you
were doing. You went into the game saying you really
wanted to improve on third down, and early on you
guys did I think you were four for your first
six and then you had to tap into that fourth down.
Gusto a little bit. What was your biggest takeaway from
that victory from a team perspective, What do you think

(03:30):
was the most important team centric development in Albuquerque?

Speaker 7 (03:35):
I think we stayed together.

Speaker 6 (03:38):
You know, as I said, we were talking about the win,
and we knew we were against it in the first quarter,
so we needed to get cause turnovers and we needed
to score touchdowns, like we That's what was That was
our imphasis going into it, as we talked coming out
the locker.

Speaker 7 (03:51):
Room, and miraculously that happened.

Speaker 6 (03:53):
You know, we had to punt on offense, but then
we got a turnover on defense and it started to
get things rolling.

Speaker 7 (03:59):
So we went TD field goal TD.

Speaker 6 (04:01):
So that's kind of how we jumped on in the game,
and then we carried it through and then we made
a choice, because we have the ball in the first half,
we made a choice to have the wind with us
the first quarter, which of this first of the second half,
which is the third quarter, and we went ahead and
handled business there too, so we didn't want to lose
the momentum of the game because they scored at the
end of the first half. So I made that decision like, look,

(04:24):
we're gonna take the win and we're gonna eliminate this
game right.

Speaker 7 (04:28):
Now in a third and it worked out.

Speaker 4 (04:29):
I'm glad you brought that up, because we were talking
about that on the broadcast. Some of these folks here
may have been listening, and you know, I think a
lot of people jump to it, and I'll say, our friend,
your old coach, Pat Hill, jumped to this too, that
you want to win, that you're back in the fourth quarter.
I said, well, what if he wants to put it
away before the fourth quarter? And it sounds like that's
what you were thinking, exactly what I was thinking.

Speaker 6 (04:49):
I was in attack mode the whole game, so I
wasn't gonna let myself take me out of that. So
I wanted to stay on attack. That's why we were
going forward on fourth down. We wanted to get points,
we wanted to be aggressive. So I kept that rolling
and it worked.

Speaker 4 (05:00):
Is there ever a time where you're not in attack mode?

Speaker 7 (05:06):
I would say this.

Speaker 6 (05:07):
The Michigan game was a little different than how I
usually am, but we needed to be that way strategically
to get to where we needed to get. So that's
one of the few times that I was a little
different than how I usually am.

Speaker 4 (05:18):
So again, I'm just trying to make sure I understand
what you're saying here, and a follow up question to that,
I think I hear you saying the slower pace that
you had in that ball game was driving you a
little crazy, like you're getting a little Lancey saying, hey,
we need to do more, we need to get after it.

Speaker 6 (05:35):
It was more of I knew we're going to get
to the fourth quarter and we needed to make the
plays when the plays came up, and unfortunately we didn't,
but it put us in position if we do make
those plays.

Speaker 7 (05:45):
Maybe we're a little happier right now.

Speaker 6 (05:46):
So I liked how that game flowed, but you're right,
it's a little different for me. It's like three hours
of slow motion. So it kept it close to everything
and we had a chance. But I like this aggressive
style better.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
Well we'll see how aggressive the Bulldogs are Saturday in
Las Vegas, and a lot of people are talking about
this game, but not for all the reasons we hoped
to mean. We thought, hey, it's a showdown in the
Mountain West, two of the top teams in the league.
Unlb's ranked for the first time in the history of
the program at the FBS level. And then a little
tweet came out last night from the quarterback there in

(06:21):
Vegas and Matthew Slucas said, Hey, I played three games,
I'm out because there's an issue with his nil situation.
And a lot has come out since then, and the
school has one take. He and his family have another take.
But the impactful part for you is now you have
to prepare for a different quarterback. Hajj Malik Williams starter

(06:43):
for the Campbell Camels at the FCS level, pretty prolific numbers.
What can you tell us about him? And what if
it all changes for you guys, preparation wise, with the
revelation that it's going to be a different guy taking
those snaps.

Speaker 6 (06:56):
Yeah, so I'm actually kind of standing up right now,
not sitting down because we had to re watch everything again.
So I've been sitting all day other than when we
were at practice, so I'm kind of like enjoying standing
right now.

Speaker 7 (07:07):
So that was how I will start this conversation.

Speaker 6 (07:12):
But I will say this, they had three quarterbacks that
have played this season, so you know, obviously one of
them decided he doesn't want to play anymore this season,
so we watched the other two guys, and then as
we watched the Utah Tech game was a game that
we could really get a good evaluation. And then we
went back and watched some stuff from this previous school
at Campbell and we feel good that what we have

(07:34):
installed as far as our scheme is gonna still carry over.

Speaker 7 (07:37):
So we just had to confirm.

Speaker 6 (07:39):
That that's type of stuff and then also get ready
for the third quarterback now too, who's more of a thrower,
so we have some things to go to that way.
The beauty of this whole thing, if there is any
beauty to it, is our first three games we had
to deal with we didn't know who the quarterback was
gonna be and they might use both and all that,
so we're kind of used to that type of thing,
so that helps.

Speaker 7 (08:00):
Until the New Mexico game.

Speaker 6 (08:01):
That was the first game last week where we were like,
all right, this is the quarterback and this is what we.

Speaker 7 (08:04):
Got to do. So we're kind of used to it.
Like I said, and uh, we'll'll be ready to play,
no big deal.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
And that third quarterback you mentioned is now the second
Cam Friel. He's a veteran and not only do you
guys have a good scattery report on him, you've actually
seen him against Fresno State. He's played significant you know
time against the Bulldogs in this rivalry.

Speaker 7 (08:23):
Yeah, he was Mount West Restman of the Year. So
really good player. He can sling it.

Speaker 6 (08:27):
He's big, He's six three, big old dudes. So if
he's in there, we're gonna have to change some things
up towards him. So it's, uh, every Saturday or Friday
with every day we play on as a challenge. So
you as a coach, you just get ready for it.
That's why you coach, because you like the challenges. You
like the middle side of things. And we get the
players ready to go, and then we got to show
off and do our thing on the game day.

Speaker 4 (08:48):
So and game day, don't sleep in on Saturday. Our
pregame coverage starts at ten thirty. It's a twelve thirty
kick from Allegiance Stadium in Las Vegas, the Raiders Stadium.
It'll be the Bulldogs and an actionally ranked Rebels squad
as the Dogs look to go to and zero in
Mountain West play and Coach Skipper is here standing on
the beautiful patio of the Point Patio Bar and Bistro.

(09:10):
Those French fries are onion rings. Coach, can you tell
I'm smelling? I'm not looking away? Tots right there? See
you stret bacon on top of the tater toes. Oh
man is Brussels sprouts too, Bacon on the Brussels sprouts?
Bacon on the tater tots. No, I'm not going to
take any I'm just admiring, but boy, it looks good

(09:31):
and it smells good. A lot of great stuff here
at the Point. And Coach Skipper's here. Mac Dealena is
on his way. He's going to be joining us Bulldogs
Senior wide out and tonight. We're not giving away tickets,
but order big out here on the patio the Point,
because one of you is going to get a gift
card to the Point Patio Bar and Bistro tonight and
that may cover your meal depending on how much you get.

(09:53):
And then we also hear, did you see this, coach?
I did not have you ever worn a little cowboy
hat before?

Speaker 7 (10:00):
I have no pictures were taken, but yes I have.

Speaker 5 (10:02):
Are you sure no pictures?

Speaker 7 (10:04):
I'm positive.

Speaker 4 (10:05):
So this is one of the hats that's going to
be given out at the next home game to some

you is going to get yours early tonight so you
can have it before everybody else. So we'll pick some

rooted as the abundant fields that drape our valley. They
link us across generations. They make us who we are.

Speaker 4 (14:15):
We are giving away a point Patti O'barnbistro gift card
and one of the slick hats that fans are going
to pick up on boots and buckles night, October twelfth,
when an unbeaten Washington State team.

Speaker 5 (14:25):
Comes to Valley Children's Stadium.

Speaker 4 (14:27):
Right now, let's get our practice update from the coach,
brought to you by Pepsi, the official drink of Fresno
State Athletics. So, last week you had a few guys
missing some practice time. Malik Sharad was one who missed
a lot of practice time. Last week. You were hoping
he'd be able to go in Albuquerque. It's a game
time decision. He wasn't able to go. How's he doing
now and what are the chances we see number two

(14:48):
out there running the rock against the Rebels.

Speaker 6 (14:51):
Yeah, he's still a game time decision. But he's been practicing.
He just hasn't been able to go the whole entire
time at practice. So we'll see how tomorrow looks. We
have Friday and then we'll see once we get going
on Saturday. That's the only thing bad about having an
early kickoff is Guy's gotta be ready in the morning
to go. So I feel confident he will, but you

(15:11):
don't know until you know, So we'll see how that goes.

Speaker 4 (15:14):
And a lot of these fans were at Valley Children's
Stadium last year when UNLV came in.

Speaker 5 (15:19):
That was a pretty epic game, and if they.

Speaker 4 (15:22):
Were paying close attention, they noticed that that offense for
the Rebels has some uniqueness to it, formations that you're
not going to see from any other teams in this league.
How do you replicate that at practice? How big a
challenge is that to get your scout team trying to
do what the Rebels are going to do for real
at Allegiance Stadium on Saturday.

Speaker 6 (15:39):
Yeah, it's hard, and our scout team has done a
great job. But the offense is so different from the
offense we run here, so they're not familiar with what
they're doing. So the scout teams that run the scout
teams and show the looks of UNLV, they spent a
lot of time watching film and then actually drawing stuff up.

Speaker 7 (15:56):
Then they do walk.

Speaker 6 (15:57):
Through themselves on what the plays are, and by the
time we get to practice, they have a good feel
for what they need to do. And then each day,
each each drill, they get better and better and better.

Speaker 7 (16:07):
And I think we're pretty good right now. We're having
good practices.

Speaker 6 (16:09):
So we'll get one more in tomorrow where we're full
speed with the looks, and then Friday kind of slows down,
and then we get going on Saturday.

Speaker 7 (16:17):
So I'm confident that we practice enough for what we
need to do.

Speaker 4 (16:21):
I've got some questions coming in on the x app
here people using that hashtag ask fs. We'll try to
get all those to the coach, and some of them
may be for Mac Dealena, who's on his way. The
Senior wide Out will be here. We're here at the
Point Patio Bar and Bistro that's the northwest corner of
Willow and Knees. And just a reminder, next week's a
bye week, so we will not be here next Wednesday night.

Speaker 5 (16:40):
You're still welcome to come.

Speaker 4 (16:41):
The menu will still be here, you might see some
fellow Bulldog fans, but we won't have the show next week.
We will be back to following Wednesday night for the
Bulldog Football Hour. Let's get into the trip ahead, brought
to you by Golden Eagle Charter, the preferred motor coach
and executive transportation service to Fresno State Athletics. That's a
trip to Vegas, and you know a lot of coaches

(17:02):
handle trips to Vegas in different ways. You actually worked
at UNLV, spent a couple of years as the defensive coordinator.
You've shared that you bought a home there that you
still have and sometimes you go hide out in Vegas.
Maybe hideout is not the best term, but coaches have
different philosophies for handling the bright lights of that city

(17:22):
and the potential distractions for their team. Is there something
that you're really focused on in emphasizing for the players
to make sure that their focus is where it needs
to be on this quick business trip to Vegas.

Speaker 6 (17:35):
I'm more like, let's keep it consistent. I don't care
which city we're in. We need to have a certain
mindset and locked in type mentality, so this will be
no different for us.

Speaker 7 (17:44):
But we do a lot of stuff.

Speaker 6 (17:45):
In the evening time, Like we don't get done till
like nine o'clock, and then we start. We eat a
snack and then the coaches go up to the rooms
and they go over.

Speaker 7 (17:53):
Their tests and stuff like that.

Speaker 6 (17:54):
So it's about ten o'clock when we get done with everything,
and then betcheck's eleven, and then we're gonna wake up.

Speaker 7 (18:00):
We're gonna go play. So there's not gonna be an issue.

Speaker 6 (18:03):
It's not like we're gonna have curfew at two am
and they get to go out in the town or whatever.
They'll see some lights from the bus and that's about it.
There won't even be in the casino or anything. So
I'm not too worried about that. This trip is no
different than the Michigan trip, no different than the Mexico trip.
We're gonna get our work in, we're gonna go to bed,
we're gonna wake up if we have time to get
a little bit more work in, and then.

Speaker 7 (18:24):
We go to stadium. That's really what it is.

Speaker 5 (18:27):
Sounds like a good plan. We're talking to coach Tim Skipper.

Speaker 4 (18:30):
We're here at the Point Patio Bar and Bistro Mac
Dealena Bulldog Senior receivers here. We'll give him a proper
introduction a little bit later on. Make sure he orders
something from the menu here at the point before we
welcome him on the show. Got some questions coming in
from some of these Bulldog fans. Here's one that Caleb
wants me to ask you and Mac dealena. He says,

(18:51):
as a fan, it's been fun to watch coach McCann,
Pat McCann, your offensive coordinator, grow as a play caller
and the offense grow because of that. How has it
been being a part of that growth from the inside
as a head coach.

Speaker 7 (19:04):
Yeah, that's a good question.

Speaker 6 (19:06):
Definitely want to ask Mac that question too, because he
coaches him as a position coach and as coordinator, so
that's really good.

Speaker 7 (19:12):
But it's awesome to watch him.

Speaker 4 (19:15):
Very smart.

Speaker 6 (19:16):
He's intelligent, innovative, always has little tweaks, always likes to
have trick plays ready. He's gonna try to use motions
and shifts to his advantage. He is with college football
is now you know a little bit of deception. It's
not just line up back in the day like when
I played and run power and hope you overpower everybody.
It is now getting to be a perimeter style game.

(19:37):
You have to use all the fields. So he is
a master of that. It's great to see. Just talking
to him, you can tell he has a lot of confidence.
He's feeling better and better as he keeps calling more
and more, so it's good. I'm glad he's a dog
and looking forward to what he can do Saturday.

Speaker 4 (19:53):
And this last Saturday he busted out a little trickery
there on the double pass play with Raylan Sharp to
Cam beacham, when that play call is going in and
you know it's about to happen in the game, does
your level of butterflies change at all?

Speaker 5 (20:07):
Or is it pretty constant for you?

Speaker 6 (20:09):
I just looked at the defense to see if we
had it, and I knew we had it, so I
felt good.

Speaker 7 (20:13):
If we didn't have the look, then I would have
butterflies or want to call time out or something like that.
And then it was get excited for the first.

Speaker 6 (20:19):
So it was Raylan's first TD pass and then it
was Cam Beach's first TD catch, so it was good
for first right there.

Speaker 5 (20:27):
It was.

Speaker 4 (20:27):
I talked to Cam about that, and he's kind of
hoping that guy that wears the number seventeen like his
jersey but for the team in silver and blacket there
in Vegas might show up to this game. Is that
something where I mean, we know NFL players have responsibilities.
If it's a night game, the day before their game,
they probably have a curfew that they're dealing with. You
think there's any chance that DeVante Adams might make an

(20:48):
appearance or get a chance to say something to you guys.

Speaker 7 (20:51):
I think there's a chance.

Speaker 6 (20:52):
The crazy part of it is most NFL teams they
do their walkthroughs and stuff in the mornings on the Saturday,
so it all depends on what time that is and
if he can get there and all that good stuff.
So he's the man in Vegas, so he can do
whatever he wants.

Speaker 4 (21:05):
To do well. He was quite the man here at
Presno State as well, and certainly is loyal to his
alma mater at every turn.

Speaker 5 (21:15):
I've got a.

Speaker 4 (21:16):
Couple more questions out here for you, but I don't
want to gloss over this UNLV team. Because you coached there.
You knew what some of the challenges in the program
where you were coaching. The defense, the defense that they
showed improvement on last year, the defense that's helped him
get off to a three and zero start and shut
down the Houston Cougars and outlast Kansas a couple of

(21:36):
wins against Power for competition it's been really impressive. What
jumps off the film at you when you watch that
Rebel defense A couple of things.

Speaker 6 (21:45):
First off, they did a great job in the portal.
They hit on some guys. They are mostly transfers, a
lot of seniors, so they played a lot of ball,
a lot experience.

Speaker 7 (21:53):
But they're playing very very well.

Speaker 6 (21:55):
To say they have all these transfers and to be
playing together the way they are, that's a compliment to
their coaching, their coaching staff and the fundamentals they teach them.
And they're getting on the play hard. They can run,
they're very very physical, very sound and coverage. They don't
give up a lot of explosive plays. They tackle well,
so we're gonna have our hands full that way. Very
good team. They rely on their defense, defensive head coach's

(22:17):
defensive minded, so it's.

Speaker 7 (22:19):
Gonna be a battle.

Speaker 6 (22:20):
But I like our guys, I like our plan, and
we'll we'll take our shots and do what we need
to do to do what we have to do to win.

Speaker 4 (22:27):
And when you say a lot of transfers, I mean
they're transfers from places like Texas and Arkansas and Texas
A and m and Ole, miss some pretty high profile programs. Yeah,
you know you mentioned a defensive head coach and Barry
otom he told me something to Mountain West Media Days
that he did in the offseason. They talked him into
actually getting up on a bull to raise money for

(22:50):
the program. Now, I'm looking at this hat here, boots
and buckles night coming up. Somebody's gonna take this at
home tonight. Would you ever get up on an actual,
live rodeo bull for the benefit of your program?

Speaker 6 (23:02):
Love the program? Definitely, love the program. I think about it.
We'll put it that way.

Speaker 5 (23:07):
You got a low center of gravity, I.

Speaker 7 (23:08):
Would think about it. Yeah, but that's a bull.

Speaker 6 (23:10):
It's not not going as people right now.

Speaker 8 (23:14):
I don't know if the bull cares about center or gravity.
I can pretty much guarant to you it does not.

Speaker 7 (23:21):
So it depends how much we're money we're talking about.

Speaker 4 (23:24):
Put it that way. He's coach Tim Skipper. We've got
more with him when we come back. Then Mac Dealena
will join us as well as senior wide out for
the Bulldogs who are playing another team that's unbeaten. Well,
the Bulldogs are unbeaten the conference play. The Rebels haven't
played a conference game yet. It's their conference opener, UNLV
ranked for the first time in school history, but dealing
with a little off the field drama. If you haven't

(23:45):
followed that, you must be hiding out somewhere because it's
on every channel and every social media. It is the
biggest story in college football right now. So maybe that'll
distract the rebels a little bit. I keep trying to
distract Coach Skipper, but he is focused on this game
Saturday twelve thirty against UNLV. You're going to hear that
right here on the Bulldog Sports Network and we'll be
back to the point. Patio Barnbistro. Come hang out with

(24:08):
us Bulldog football hour till seven o'clock on the Bulldog

Speaker 3 (24:12):

Speaker 4 (27:28):

food out there where. Those are the short rip tacos
over there that David got you. Steve's chomping on something
good over there. Oh, chicken wings a popular choice here.
Everything's good at the Point Patio Bar and Bistro. And
we're here on Wednesday nights of game weeks. Remember no
show next week because there's no game next week. There's
a big game this Saturday against nationally ranked UNLV coach Skipper.

(27:53):
You know we can try to send Matt Leever, the
public address announcer around to your recruiting visits if you'd
like a proper introduction when you go on the road.

Speaker 7 (28:00):
Yeah, guaranteed to get commitments.

Speaker 4 (28:04):
Too. Kind Well, we're gonna let Matt tell us who
else from the bulldog world is joining us now out
here on the beautiful patio of the Point Patio Bar
and Bistro. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome San Joaquin Memorial
Own wide receiver kickoff Specialist one and only, Mac Delena. Yeah,

(28:27):
you're gonna hear that voice at every home football game,
the basketball games, even the volleyball game tomorrow night at
the same Mart Center.

Speaker 5 (28:33):
I understand. So man, that.

Speaker 4 (28:35):
Guy's everywhere, his voices in more places than mine. Mac,
Welcome to the Point Patio Bar and Bistro.

Speaker 5 (28:41):
How you doing.

Speaker 16 (28:41):
I'm doing great. Thanks for having me.

Speaker 4 (28:43):
Ah, good to have you. Coach Skip. You've known this
guy for a while. You've seen the impact he's had
on the team. The numbers this year are well beyond
anything we've ever seen from him in the past.

Speaker 5 (28:54):
Where does that come from?

Speaker 4 (28:55):
What have you seen him do that's maybe produced the
results we've seen so far?

Speaker 5 (28:59):
In his senior season.

Speaker 7 (29:00):
Definitely work ethic.

Speaker 6 (29:01):
You come to our practices, you think it was game
day the way he practices, So it definitely carries over
the off season. When nobody's watching, he's just grinding, doing
a great job in the weight room. Speed work. Because
I talked about you a couple of weeks ago. I
think you're faster, and you were fast already, but I
think you're actually faster now because nobody's catching you and stuff,
so you're blowing by the dvs and everything. So that's

(29:21):
a compliment to his work ethic.

Speaker 5 (29:23):
Appreciate that well.

Speaker 4 (29:25):
I guess the follow up question I've got to ask
you is where does that work ethic come from? Can
you trace it back to some things in your childhood
where you learned that lesson that if you put him
some hard work, it's going to pay off.

Speaker 5 (29:37):
Definitely.

Speaker 17 (29:38):
I think just the way I grew up, you know,
being raised kind of on a ranch, doing everything, going
to work and just being out there on the hot
summer days.

Speaker 16 (29:49):
Doing anything I had to do on the farm.

Speaker 17 (29:51):
So I think just doing that and knowing that, you know,
day wasn't over till the job was finished. So I
think at really young ages. I did that, and now
it's just kind of progressed into what I'm doing now.

Speaker 4 (30:03):
And you've got a couple brothers, an older brother who
was on the team for a while, a younger brother
who's on the team with you. Now, did the three
of you have a little competition out there? And who
could work harder in those kind of jobs?

Speaker 17 (30:15):
I think there's always a competition and everything we do,
so I would say it may not have been that
obvious while we were working, but inside, you know, I
better have We did the row better than they we
did the row.

Speaker 7 (30:28):
Say you that.

Speaker 4 (30:29):
Anybody else out here ever been out there weeding a
row in an orchard or a field?

Speaker 5 (30:34):
Yeah, that could be thankless work. Hey.

Speaker 4 (30:37):
Incidentally, we're brought to you tonight by the American Pistachio Growers,
Powering the.

Speaker 5 (30:41):
Valley one nut at a time.

Speaker 4 (30:42):
We thank the American Pistachio Growers for their continued support
of Presno State Athletics and for being the presenting sponsor
of our show. How many pistachio trees do you think?
You've been around Mack A lot, A lot that count.
And I know your brothers had a little fun with
flavoring pistachios in his past. Do you have a favorite

(31:04):
flavored pistachio flavor?

Speaker 5 (31:06):
I can't say I have.

Speaker 16 (31:07):
A favorite one.

Speaker 17 (31:08):
I think we're doing some right now, and my mom
called me the other day said we were just starting
to try some out, so they're coming soon, so I'm excited.

Speaker 4 (31:18):
Well, let me ask Coach Skip on this one, if
you could throw any flavoring on a pistachio, Because you
go to the store now, I mean you can get barbecue,
you can get honey, you can get chili, lemon. I
mean it's all out there. What would be your go
to pistachio flavor?

Speaker 7 (31:33):
I think it would be I'm thinking about these wings.

Speaker 6 (31:35):
I'm want to eat it from here in a minute,
So I would do some kind of barbecue, like a
honey barbecue type thing.

Speaker 7 (31:41):
So saw like my wings. So that's what I would
do with pistashio and see what happens.

Speaker 4 (31:46):
All right, Well, maybe there'll be a few extras from
the Delana's coming your way to see how that works.
We're here at the Point Patio Bar and Bistro. We're
here till seven o'clock. Mac Dealene is going to stick
around to the rest of the hour. We've got coach
skip for a few more minutes, and I want to
get to some of these questions for you Skip that
came in on the x app and get back to
him here. Hashtag ask fs is the way to go.

(32:09):
This is a unique one, and the guy who asked
it is here tonight. He was eating some of those
chicken wings. Beat you to the punch. Steve Malonka, one
of our quarterback club leaders, and he says, regarding television broadcasts,
so a lot of Bulldog fans been watching on TV.
They've enjoyed the True TV broadcast the last couple of weeks.
Before I get to his question, since I mentioned True TV, Mac,

(32:31):
have you practiced your salsa dancing just in case you
end up in one of those postgame interviews like Malik
Sharad or Raylan Sharp.

Speaker 7 (32:37):
I have not.

Speaker 17 (32:38):
I have not so hopefully and I don't uh have
to pull myself out on live camera.

Speaker 4 (32:44):
You saying you have a little salted dancing experience.

Speaker 5 (32:47):
I think so, yes, not much.

Speaker 4 (32:50):
I think your coach is looking forward to seeing that.
Hopefully you give him a reason to do so. That
means we wont Hey man, Well, here's Steve's question, coach,
he says, regarding the TV broad cast, who is the
young man standing behind you on the sidelines with the
three ring binder.

Speaker 7 (33:06):
Oh, my goodness, Steve.

Speaker 6 (33:10):
So that is Mason by Hill, and he is, lack
of better words, he's our general manager, kind of runs
everything on the side, takes care of business, make sure
these guys are all taken care of. But on game
day he does a couple of things specifically for me.
First thing he does he kind of rites the game.

(33:30):
So whatever I say happens, he writes it down. So
I'm gonna say there's a holding penalty on such and such,
or this is a big play. Make sure I remember
this big play, and he'll write everything out. And then
about the second quarter, towards the end the second quarter,
I'll ask him tell me about the game, and he'll
say everything that I told him to write. So it
kind of brings the game back to me. Then when
I talk to the team, I can kind of bring

(33:51):
up some things, or it helps me set the mood
for how halftime's going to be, whatever the case is.
Then the same thing happens in the second half, helps
me at the end of the game with that, and
then when I talk to the press and all that
type of stuff. So he's kind of writing that down.
But the other thing he's doing that book he's holding
is the analytic book, so that's telling us all the
situations throughout the game, some of the fourth downs, and

(34:13):
we go for it.

Speaker 7 (34:14):
I ask him, what's the book say?

Speaker 6 (34:15):
Book says, go, Then I used the human element of
me and Coach Baxter talking and then we make a decision.
So there's a lot going on with that guy that's
right behind me, I'll put it that way.

Speaker 4 (34:27):
And he's in his first year in this new position.
He's been in the program for a while, but he
sure seems to be doing an excellent job. And you
know he really is running the show.

Speaker 6 (34:37):
Yeah, he does a great job. He's right there everywhere
I go. He is, so I'm used to him being
on my side. So he's always by the headphone that's open,
so my open ear if you want to.

Speaker 7 (34:47):
Know exactly where he's going to be. So, yeah, he
does a great job.

Speaker 4 (34:50):
Very smart. Now I've got to ask is a follow up,
because you know the other side is always listening to
these things. Does that mean you have to have like
a a dummy decoy binder in case somebody's, you know,
trying to sneak in and steal your binder.

Speaker 7 (35:06):
It's like the magic button. You can't let it avoid
your eyesight, you know what I'm saying.

Speaker 6 (35:10):
So that book is one book, and there's only one book,
and we're going to have that book on game day,
but you never see it until game days.

Speaker 7 (35:17):
You don't even know. I don't even know where it
is right now, no idea. There's only one guy knows
as Mace, so.

Speaker 4 (35:23):
We need to protect Mason at all costs. That's what
Coach is saying. We're here at the point patio bar
and bistro. Coach, Skipper and Mac Dealena are here. Coach
is going to enjoy some chicken wings in a minute.
Let me throw one more question at you, Coach before
we zero in on mac.

Speaker 5 (35:37):
Hey. See what I did? There're zero in on number zero.

Speaker 4 (35:40):
I wasn't even thinking about that. So this was a
question from a chef boy art on the XF that's
a creative handle using that hashtag ask fes. You and
I touched on this a little earlier. Maybe Max got
something to share too. It says, with all the recent
news about UNLV, how does that affect the game plan
going in of the matchup and any thoughts going into

(36:03):
the game that weren't there before all this drama out
there in unlv Land.

Speaker 7 (36:07):
I'm gonna assume we're talking about the quarterback situation.

Speaker 4 (36:09):
I think that's what he meant, right, it's the biggest
story in college football right now.

Speaker 5 (36:12):
I'm pretty sure that's what he's referring to.

Speaker 6 (36:14):
Yeah, it's kind of like I said, we're used to
playing multiple quarterbacks. Their offense isn't gonna change. They're gonna
run with they run, so it's just a different person.
We spend a lot of time getting ready for this today,
so we just wanted to study people and know who
we're dealing with. But we're not gonna change. We're ready
to go. Practices aren't gonna change. Nothing dramatic is gonna happen.

(36:34):
We didn't throw away our scheme from Monday and change
it up today or anything like that.

Speaker 7 (36:39):
We're gonna go play bulldof football. That's the bottom line.

Speaker 6 (36:41):
And we got to give them something to worry about,
so they need to worry about us more than we're
worry about them.

Speaker 4 (36:47):
Seems to be a popular answer out here on the
patio of the Point Patio bar and bistro for you, Mac.
I'm just guessing obviously that that word spread throughout the
UNLV locker room. They had another running back later who
also decided he's not going to play anymore this year,
and a guy who carried the ball significant amount of
times for Michael Allen. Is that something that started to
spread around you guys in the clubhouse about the situation

(37:09):
at UNLV, where conversations start happening. Could you believe that
or would you do that? How did the team kind
of digest that? Because I know you've got an nil deal.
I've seen your nil T shirts. My brother in law
whose spots for me on game base, he's still trying
to find one of those nil T shirts. We got
to track one down.

Speaker 5 (37:25):
But how did the.

Speaker 4 (37:26):
Team kind of digest that ongoing drama there in Vegas?

Speaker 17 (37:31):
I think it was you know, you saw it, you
talked about it, but didn't really think much of it.
You know, it's it is crazy that some players are
you know, are the way they are. But I think
you know, it wasn't wasn't too much for us. We
talked about it, you know, it was kind of a
crazy thing that happened, but nothing really changes for on
our end.

Speaker 4 (37:52):
I like it, and we're gonna get more with mac
Delano when we come back. You smell that, now, Coach,
what's that garlic? Somebody's got something that smells really good
out here at the point. Might be those steak bites
there that Savannah just put down. They come with a
chimmy cherry sauce and some sauteed mushrooms. Man, this place
is good the point Patti O'barnbistro. We're here till seven o'clock. Coach,

(38:13):
thanks for coming out. Good luck Saturday. Uh, thank you
appreciating He's the one and only coach. Tim Skipper will
continue with wide out mac Delano when we come back.

Speaker 5 (42:30):
That's one of the.

Speaker 4 (42:31):
Things your family grows. You also grow a lot of onions.
Does that mean you get desensitized to.

Speaker 5 (42:38):
The smell of onions?

Speaker 4 (42:39):
Can like, can you not smell an onion because you've
been around him too much? No?

Speaker 17 (42:46):
No, it's on now, Okay, Yeah, I well, I don't know,
because I smell on my whole life. I think it's
I still smell him, and I know I haven't been
around him as often now because you know, college football,
but when I smell him, it's very identifiable and it's
still just as strong, and you know, it's a family

(43:10):
farming operation.

Speaker 4 (43:11):
And I know I've talked to your brother about this
a little bit too. I was just talking about the
Honor Flight and we were honoring veterans at the last
home game on Heroes Night. Your grandfather was a veteran
of the Vietnam War. Have you heard very much about
some of the things that that he did in the military,
And is is that something that you take pride in
his legacy of service?

Speaker 5 (43:33):
Yes, most definitely.

Speaker 16 (43:34):
He's He's told a couple of stories here.

Speaker 17 (43:37):
And there, and I know what he's done, and it's
really awesome to know what he went through and you
know the battles he fought, and you know, just him
explaining it and the way he works now and still works.
He just shows and he's a great role model on
you know, how to work and who to be.

Speaker 4 (43:59):
Yeah, and you know some of the things that he's
had to overcome, even recently. So I guess it's kind
of hard for you to complain about anything. Yeah, definitely, Well,
not a lot to complain about. With his bulldog football
team off to a three and one start, winners of
three in a row, and looking to go too and
zero in Mountain West play Saturday at twelve thirty against UNLV.

(44:19):
When you think of this rivalry with the Rebels, are
there some moments or are some thoughts that come to mind?

Speaker 17 (44:26):
Not specifically, but I do know that this is one
of the one of the biggest games, and now that
we're in mount West play, you know, we treat every
game like the mount West Championship. That's what we're playing for,
so you know this game is just another championship game.

Speaker 4 (44:41):
You were there the last time Fresno State played in Vegas.
That was a great game in twenty twenty two on
a Mountain West championship Fresno State football team, right. Was
that kind of cool to play in the Raiders Stadium? Yeah?

Speaker 17 (44:55):
I mean that was the first NFL stadium and that
I played in and it was just cool scene. And
were we the first No, that was the year before
twenty twenty one, it was the first game played, but yeah, no,
it was a really cool experience just to be in
there and just see the environment.

Speaker 4 (45:13):
The twenty twenty one game, we were still under those
COVID restrictions, right, or that was twenty twenty I guess yeah.
And then you played another game in Vegas out you know,
in the Boonies against New Mexico that year. That was
a weird year, yes, but so twenty twenty two was
the first time it was a real full crowd and
you got all that and you guys won the game.
With Jay Kyner at quarterback. You've had Mikey Keen now

(45:35):
the last couple of years, and it sure seems like
you guys have a pretty special connection.

Speaker 5 (45:40):
Where did that come from?

Speaker 4 (45:41):
I mean, I have a feeling that it's more than
just two guys who show up on Saturday and pitch
and catch. How have you and Mikey gotten closer and
more on the same page, more in sync.

Speaker 17 (45:53):
I think just having them for a whole year, being
able to come to this offseason together, knowing what our
goal is for the for this this year, and just
talking about it with each other. Obviously, you know, it's
the outside of football things, hanging out more all that stuff,
building you know, personal chemistry. But I think knowing our
goals and being able to work in the off season

(46:15):
and fix out the wrinkles because last year was a
little tough. You know, we were still learning, you know,
what each other do and how they do it. So
I think now knowing with a year under our belt,
it just clears everything up.

Speaker 4 (46:28):
We're talking to mac Dealana, seeing your wide receiver from
right here in the valley at San Joaquin Memorial High
School grad and the fastest guy on the team. Has
anybody tried to challenge you? I mean the coaches always
say you're the fastest guy on the team. Have you
had some teammates try to put that to the test.

Speaker 17 (46:44):
Not in a one on one situation? Now, I've never
had someone say, let's go race and see hows faster?
A lot of people say they are, but you know, statistics.

Speaker 4 (46:55):
Tale well, speaking of statistics, you know you're kind of
slacking going into last week's game. Your per catch average
was over twenty five yards of catch. Now it's only
twenty three point nine. What's up with that?

Speaker 16 (47:09):
You got? We got to get back to it this
next week.

Speaker 4 (47:16):
You know, two home games in a row, you catch
an absolute bomb on the first possession.

Speaker 5 (47:21):
One was the first play. The next week it was
the second play.

Speaker 4 (47:24):
How cool of a feeling is that in front of
a big, sold out home crowd.

Speaker 5 (47:29):
To start a game with that kind.

Speaker 4 (47:31):
Of electricity, What does that feel like to make that
kind of play?

Speaker 17 (47:36):
It feels rewarding because all the work you put in
as a team to accomplish that. And I think, you know,
I feel for everybody because you know you put in
all the work. You know this place coming on Thursday
at least, but you run it multiple times throughout the week.
So I think it's just rewarding knowing that we put

(47:57):
it all together and executed it and at the game
like that.

Speaker 4 (48:01):
I think these enjoyed that a little bit too, if
they were in their seats early enough. We've got more
to come with mac Delana. If you've got a question
for him, send it our way on the x app.
Use that hashtag ask FS. It's the Bulldog Football Hour
at the Point Patio Bar and Bistro on the Bulldog
Sports Network from.

Hey, we've got a few minutes left out here at
the Point Patio Bar and Bistro. Great to be back
with this great group of people out here on the
patio with the Bulldog Football Hour. Just a reminder the
show won't be here next week, but the patio will
be and the same great menu will be.

Speaker 5 (51:36):
Just no show next week because it's a bye week.

Speaker 4 (51:38):
That's all.

Speaker 5 (51:39):
Big one for the Bulldogs this week.

Speaker 4 (51:40):
Twelve thirty kicks Saturday at Allegiance Stadium in Las Vegas
against UNLV. If you're a Raider fan, they're home the
next day too. Mac, How cool would it be if
DeVante Adams just happened to show up to say hi
to his alma mater this weekend? I think that would
be a.

Speaker 16 (51:56):
Really special special thing if he came and said, it's up.

Speaker 5 (52:00):
Have you had a chance to meet him before?

Speaker 16 (52:02):
I've never met him.

Speaker 12 (52:02):
No.

Speaker 4 (52:05):
I imagine as a very young Bulldog fan growing up
here in the valley. You probably saw some of his
highlights in twenty twelve, twenty thirteen.

Speaker 16 (52:12):
Yes, most definitely did.

Speaker 4 (52:15):
Yeah, is there a play you can think back on
the Devonte made that you watched it play in the
same position, You're like, man, how did he do that?

Speaker 17 (52:25):
Not a specific play, but every even now, when I
see his highlights, it's just like just especially in college,
you know, the things he was doing was crazy.

Speaker 4 (52:34):
So he was the complete package. And now he's even better,
and he's as great off the field as he is
on the field.

Speaker 5 (52:40):
And he's a.

Speaker 4 (52:41):
Bulldog, so is Mac Dealena and Mac. I was just
looking at the menu here at the point Patio Barbistro
and made me wonder, what are you ordering tonight? What
are you going with here?

Speaker 16 (52:51):
I think I went with the new York. I think
I've had it before and it was really good.

Speaker 17 (52:55):
So you know, how do you do your state? Medium? Medium,
sometimes medium, rare, all right, just depending on how you're
feeling that night. Yeah, well here at the point that
comes with a baked potato and sauted Brockalini garlick gerb
butter and a Cabernet Demiglas.

Speaker 5 (53:10):
Boy, that's making me hungry.

Speaker 4 (53:11):
But in your honor tonight, I'm just gonna go with
this one down here on the small plates.

Speaker 16 (53:18):
Good old mac and cheese, Mac and cheese.

Speaker 4 (53:22):
Maybe if you have a big enough game in Vegas,
we can make that the mac dealena and cheese here
and you can get some more nil going with the point,
Patti Obarr and bistro. There was a question that came
in earlier that I posed a coach skipper that they
wanted to direct to you as well, and it was
about your offensive coordinator, Pat mccannho used to be your
position coach with the wide outs and then he got

(53:44):
promoted to OC after Kirby Moore left for Missouri. That
Caleb was asking about coach mccannon growing as a play caller,
the offense growing as a result of that. Are there
some things you've seen knowing coach McCann as long as
you have, you know, working with him in the wide
receiver room now is EUROC that's kind of been fun
to watch or fires you up a little bit with

(54:05):
where this offense has come and where it's going.

Speaker 17 (54:08):
Yeah, I think throughout the years he's been here, he's
gotten to know his players really well, and he knows
what certain guys are really good at and others aren't,
so he knows where to put you know, the position
to put people in. And I think it's given our
offense a chance to succeed really well. And I think
now that he's been a play color on a second
year now, I think he's grown from last year learned.

(54:31):
He he's still learning a week from week on how
to improve our offense.

Speaker 4 (54:36):
And he's a big Macdalena fan. Yes, he's talked about
you at some of our weekly news conferences. He said
he really wants to see you get an invite to
the NFL Combine because he wants to see what kind
of forty.

Speaker 5 (54:46):
Time you could run there in front of all those people.

Speaker 4 (54:51):
And we can talk about that, but I'm just wondering
what it means to you to have a coach who
has that much confidence in you, because I mean it.
I'm sure not every player always feels that way about
the coaches that they really believe in him, but that
seems to be so clear for you. What does that
do for you when you see him drawing up plays
with you in mind, or seeing the clips on social

(55:12):
media of him talking about you that way.

Speaker 17 (55:14):
Yeah, you know, it definitely gives me confidence knowing that
my coach has that much belief in me, even when
you know you see it when he gives he gives
me that opportunity the first play of the game to
go start the game fast because he has that trust
to me that I could go do that and like
I said, putting people in a position to succeed for
themselves in for the offense just to go win. So

(55:35):
I think having that definitely helps me with the confidence
and just staying positive and trusting him.

Speaker 4 (55:42):
We're talking to Macdalena. We've got just a couple more
minutes here. You know, I know this is cheesy, no
pun intended, but I did order that Mac and cheese
in your honor today, and I'm just wondering if if
you like Mac and cheese.

Speaker 16 (55:55):
I don't like playing mac and cheese.

Speaker 7 (55:56):
I could.

Speaker 16 (55:56):
I like a really good.

Speaker 17 (56:00):
There's like tri tip mac and cheese. There's so many
different types of mac and cheese, but a bad plain
mac and cheese.

Speaker 4 (56:07):
Now, I do like Halapagno's in my mac and cheese.
I forgot to tell him that tonight to order it
with halopanos or green chili and mac and cheese here
though it does come with bacon and has toasted.

Speaker 5 (56:18):
Breadcrumbs on top.

Speaker 4 (56:19):
I could do that, maybe a few pistachios, a little
pistashio crust on top. And that makes me wonder too,
you know, because there's all these great nicknames and sports.
A lot of times you have a big running back
and a faster running back, they call them thunder and lightning,
or you know, you have mister inside mister outside. Fresno
State's had some great white out duos over the years.
Coach Tedford bus throwing to Henry Ellard and Stefan Page

(56:42):
at the same time. So if we were to have
another wide out and you guys were the mac and
cheese duo, who's the cheesiest guy in that wide receiver room?
That we would have to put that label.

Speaker 5 (56:54):
On, I would have to go. I'd have to go
with jam and Moss.

Speaker 17 (57:00):
I mean, he just he's a character, so I'd have
to give him the cheese.

Speaker 5 (57:05):
All right. Maybe we can get another T shirt going
with Mac and cheese.

Speaker 7 (57:07):
Huh.

Speaker 5 (57:08):
And I don't know if I've ever asked.

Speaker 4 (57:11):
You this, and I know I'm giving you some tough
ones today, but you've survived your brother's podcast, right.

Speaker 5 (57:15):
You have been on Bring the Juice.

Speaker 4 (57:17):
Now we have to bring the Juice tailgate stage the
next home game October twelfth, Go check it out. Has
he tried to get you to do that? By the way,
like in uniform, straight.

Speaker 5 (57:26):
From the locker room. What's that to go on the
tailgate show before a game.

Speaker 16 (57:29):
No, he knows better. He's been in the position. He
knows better than not to.

Speaker 4 (57:36):
Is Mac on your birth certificate? Yes, and may see
that's all it says. Have you ever heard the story
of where that came from?

Speaker 16 (57:44):
Yeah?

Speaker 17 (57:46):
So great uncle his name was uncle or it was Amerigo,
which is my middle name.

Speaker 5 (57:54):
Uh huh.

Speaker 17 (57:54):
They called him Uncle Mack. So that's how from the story,
I know, that's that's how I got my first name.

Speaker 4 (58:01):
I like it and I know we're fixating on the
name here, but the men you got me thinking, are
there some nicknames that people have come up with because
your name is Mac that you actually appreciate and don't
mind being called?

Speaker 17 (58:17):
I mean, I don't I know whoever is going to
give me a nickname probably knows me really well. So
I want to say I appreciate and like being called
certain nicknames, but none of them are bad.

Speaker 4 (58:28):
None of them are harsh Mac attacks.

Speaker 5 (58:30):
Okay, yes, all right.

Speaker 4 (58:33):
Number one thing you're looking forward to for this game
that kicks off Saturday at twelve thirty.

Speaker 16 (58:39):
The number one thing is to go win, and so
that's what I'm looking forward to.

Speaker 4 (58:44):
I think they're in agreement. You got a lot of backup.
He's a good sport, he's a good receiver. The Bulldogs
are a good team, maybe a great team, and they
have a chance to prove it Saturday twelve thirty in
Vegas against the Rebels. Don't miss the broadcast with our
pregame starting at ten thirty. You'll even hear Max brother Frank,
who's going to be a here pretty soon. Max's gonna
be an uncle. Maybe we'll talk about that next time.
Thanks for listening. Tonight, he's gonna enjoy a steak. I'm

(59:05):
gonna eat some of that mac deleena and cheese. Well
that doesn't sound quite right. I'll have the mac and
cheese from the Point Patio bar Bistro. Thanks for listening
to the Bulldog Football Hour on the Bulldog Sports Network.
