Speaker 1 (00:01):
On the Bulldog Sports Network from Learfield.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
This is the Bulldog Football Hour, presented by American pistachio growers,
powering the Valley one nut at a time. Also brought
to you by Table Mountain Casino Resorts, Lucky Days and
Epic Nights, and by Pepsi, official soft drink of Fresno
State Athletics. Now live from the Point Pettio Baring Bistro,

(00:28):
here's your host, the Voice of the Bulldogs, Paul Leffler.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Hey, is it a beautiful evening in the San Joaquine
Valley or what notice? I didn't say the Silicon Valley,
the San Joaquine Valley.

Speaker 4 (00:45):
There's only one valley here where we're.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Hanging out tonight and we are on the patio of
the Point Satio Bar and Bistro. The Valley Trophy is
on the line Saturday five o'clock kick for a homecoming
game that has so much going on, we're going to
talk about it all tonight night. Dogs are gonna wear
black uniforms. In fact, we've got a black helmet sitting
on the table here and we're giving away a black

(01:09):
mini helmet tonight. So one of you out here on
the patio is going to take this home, unless it's
someone who's not here yet who decides to come occupy
a couple of the seats that we have left northwest
corner of Willow and Knees, the Point patio bar and bistro,
host of the Bulldog Football Hour every Wednesday night. We'll
be back here next Wednesday night as well. Coach Tim
Skipper is here. We have Steven Schit coming a little

(01:32):
bit later on, and he has family ties to both
sides of this Bulldog Spartan rivalry.

Speaker 5 (01:37):
And it's not just this helmet we're giving away tonight.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
We are giving away well, let me ask this, any
Bulldog basketball fans here tonight. Someone here tonight is going
to win two season tickets for Fresno State men's basketball.
We also have two fifty dollars gift cards to the
Kennel Marketplace if you need to go get your blackout
gear for Saturday night. Because it's a blackout game, the

(02:03):
team's wearing black, you're supposed to wear black. I didn't
wear black tonight, but Matt Leeaber did and he's gonna
introduce our first guest tonight.

Speaker 5 (02:12):
Ladies, gentlemen, boys.

Speaker 6 (02:13):
And girls fresh off a huge road victory up at
Reno and ready to take on San Jose State for
homecoming on Saturday. Head coach of your Bulldogs, the one
and only Tim.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
Skipper, I really think we need to have him do
your ringtone, coach, I'm down.

Speaker 5 (02:37):
What is your ringtone? By the way?

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (02:39):
Whatever is on the phone?

Speaker 5 (02:41):
Uh huh in the same way right? Yeah, nothing fancy.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
It's funny sometimes when someone does have a custom ring tone,
you end up learning a lot more about him than you.

Speaker 5 (02:50):
Thought you ever would.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
Absolutely to all the secrets.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
Well, congratulations, that was a big win Saturday in Reno.

Speaker 4 (02:58):
It wasn't easy, not at all, not at all.

Speaker 7 (03:00):
Four quarter or fist fight. We knew it was going
to be that way. That's how all their games have been.
So we just wanted to have the last punch at
the end of the game, and we did and we
got the win.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
Indeed, they did twenty four to twenty one, shutting out
Nevada in the second half and a second half shutouts
impressive period. But what impressed me the most was the
fact that it came after the loss of one of
your best defensive players. You had the targeting call on
Dean Clark and I think emotionally, I mean, that could
have been a huge drain on your defense, but it

(03:30):
seemed like it was just the opposite. It brought guys together.
The guys who took his place did a phenomenal job. Obviously,
if you shut them out in the second half, how
proud were you of the way your team seemingly kind
of rallied together and became a stronger unit even when
they were a little shorthanded.

Speaker 7 (03:46):
Definitely, I think this is a first game where we
became one heart beat, where the offense, defense, and the
special teams all were clicking for four quarters throughout the game.
Special teams was really the point of difference. Our punt return,
our sharks as we.

Speaker 4 (03:58):
Call it, getting blocks.

Speaker 7 (04:01):
We call them blocks, even though they didn't actually punt it,
but we made them pull the ball down and we
tackled him.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
So we had non traditional blocks on the Sharks team.

Speaker 5 (04:08):
So that was.

Speaker 7 (04:09):
Really the point of the difference because it flipped the
field position and then we scored off of those. And
then also our punt team, which we call the bomb squad,
pinning them down inside the five down there and once
inside of ten, two inside of five, once inside of ten,
so that was huge.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
Then you already hit on the defense.

Speaker 7 (04:25):
Okay, they had three hundred and fifty plus yards rushing
against Oregon State the week before. We held them to
eighty four, so that was huge, huge, And then they
only had fifty five yards in the whole second half.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
So you do stuff like that, you're gonna put yourself
in a better.

Speaker 5 (04:38):
Position to get shut out.

Speaker 4 (04:39):
So it was pretty good.

Speaker 5 (04:40):
It's really good.

Speaker 8 (04:42):
It was.

Speaker 5 (04:42):
It was a great team win.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
And you talk about the special teams, you know, I
was trying to figure out what to call that too,
you know, a blocked punt that never got punted. It
was swallowed, it wasn't kicked. Maybe someone could come up
with a new term that'll kind of become in vogue.
But that was pretty and and I guess you've been
around coach Baxter long enough to know the guy is

(05:06):
a genius when it comes to special teams, and boy,
the way he can find a vulnerability and then exploit it.
And it took Nevada a while to figure that one out.

Speaker 7 (05:16):
Yeah, I don't think they figured it out, to be
honest with you. They even brought their quarterback in and
he punted one, so they didn't have to line up
in their traditional punt formations.

Speaker 4 (05:25):
So it was kind of a checkmate type thing.

Speaker 5 (05:28):
Uh spent.

Speaker 7 (05:29):
He spends a lot of time just watching film. He's
seen it all, so once he finds a flaw, he's
going to attack that flaw. And I give credit to
the guys too, because he put in the game plan,
which we put in on Wednesdays, and they practice it
on Wednesday for five minutes.

Speaker 4 (05:41):
They get another five.

Speaker 7 (05:42):
Minutes Thursday, and then Saturday they got to live it,
and they lived it on Saturday and they or it
was Friday of that week and they took care of business.
So it was awesome to see the guys just execute
it and have fun.

Speaker 4 (05:52):
Like if you look at their.

Speaker 7 (05:53):
Reactions after the plays, that's the that's the beauty, that's
why you coach and see them smiling and have fun.

Speaker 5 (05:59):
Yeah, I was.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
It was one of those games where you could tell
a lot of guys had a lot of fun. You
mentioned the bomb squad covering those punts, and we're starting
to get used to Clay Lawrence being able to put
him down there and have someone fielded inside the ten.
That happened three times the other night, and how about
the game that R. L. Miller had, Because if I
asked everybody out here, this is not an insult, but

(06:21):
a show of hands who knew who RL Miller was
before last week. I don't know how many hands would
go up. Only some guys who have kids on the team.
I mean, that's cheating. But man, did he make a
name for himself, not just on special teams, but on
defense as well.

Speaker 5 (06:34):
And now the rest of the league knows who he is.

Speaker 4 (06:35):
Absolutely, absolutely, he finally got a shot.

Speaker 7 (06:38):
You know, he's a freshman last year, he's grinding through things,
and then he's finally gotten his opportunity. We recruited him
as all right, you're gonna play nickel and you're also
going to play inside backers, so he's kind of been
playing both. Well, he finally got a shot to be
out there as a nickel uses long levers.

Speaker 4 (06:52):
He's a long guy. He's real skinny, but.

Speaker 5 (06:54):
He's very strong.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
He's that long arm strong guy.

Speaker 8 (06:56):
You know what I mean.

Speaker 7 (06:57):
It's not weight room strength, it's just because he's long
and strong. So he took care of business. I'm excited
about him. I think he's gonna get better, better and better.
He's very young. He's just gonna keep on adding weight,
keep on adding muscle, and he's gonna have a very
good career as a bulldog.

Speaker 5 (07:12):
We're talking to Coach Tim Skipper.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
We're here at the Point Patti Obar and Bistro, northwest
corner of Willow and Knees. If you want to win
one of our awesome prizes tonight, you got to come
join us.

Speaker 5 (07:21):
You have to be present to win.

Speaker 3 (07:22):
We're brought to you by the American Pistachio Growers, powering
the Valley one nut at a time. We want to
thank the American Pistachio Growers for their continued supporter Presno
State Athletics and for being the presenting sponsor of our
show out here at the Point. I don't see too
much food on people's tables yet. Are those the Brussels
sprouts you got there? Jim, Yeah, thumbs up for the
Brussels sprouts. A little bacon with them. I know what

(07:44):
Coach Skippers get, and he gets the same thing every
single week.

Speaker 5 (07:47):
You're not shaking it up?

Speaker 4 (07:48):
Are you not shaking up at all?

Speaker 5 (07:50):
I thought we were going to commercial break.

Speaker 4 (07:51):
I'm not shaking it up at all, not at all.
Still gonna have my wings, still gonna have my wedge salad.
It's awesome.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
It's tradition now well, and they've got it down here
at the point Patti Obar and Bistro. You know, I
wanted to ask you another thing about the Nevada game,
and maybe some of you out here have questions for
the coach about the Nevada game or the matchup with
San Jose State. If you're not here and you still
have a question for coach or for Steven Scheitt, who's
coming up later, you can use the hashtag ask fs
on the x app. Another element of the second half shutout,

(08:23):
you know, as you talk about the team coming together,
that complimentary football that coach Tedford would talk about all
the time, A big piece of that was how you
guys were able to run the ball and slow down
the pace a little bit, because Nevada came in leading
the league in time of possession and you said, we're
not going to let you guys play keep away from us.
We're going to keep your offense on the sideline a

(08:44):
little bit, keep our defense fresh.

Speaker 5 (08:46):
How big a factory do you think that?

Speaker 3 (08:47):
Was your guys' ability to sustain drives and hold on
to the football a little longer.

Speaker 5 (08:51):
Definitely.

Speaker 7 (08:52):
We always want to win the trenches. That's number one
rule with us. That's playing bulldog football. That's imposing our wheel,
that's our style of play. We all always want to
do that. Playing against Nevada with their time possession type style,
we had to win first now. We had to get
explosive efficient runs on offense, and we had to shut
them down to two yards of less on first now.
We felt if we could do that, we would control

(09:13):
the game, and that's exactly what happened, and we kept
that going.

Speaker 5 (09:16):
All the way through.

Speaker 7 (09:17):
The offense ended up holding the ball in the last
possession for about three minutes, which got it down to
about seventeen seconds when we actually punted it back to them,
So only had two kind of Hill Mary type plays.
So winning the trenches and establishing our personality was the
key to that game.

Speaker 4 (09:32):
Like I said, as a four quarter fist fight.

Speaker 7 (09:34):
We kept on fight and kept swinging, and we had
the last swing, the last punch.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
And you talk about a heavyweight bout, We're in for
one on homecoming Saturday, five o'clock kick against San Jose State.
The eighty seventh meeting between the Bulldogs and the Spartans.
Coach you talked to last week, it's a Mountain West
playoff the rest of the season, and this is clearly
a playoff game. You guys are two and one in conference.
The Spartans are three and one. There's still some teams

(09:59):
ahead of you with no losses. So for all intents
and purposes, the team that doesn't win Saturday probably isn't
going to make the conference title game.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
Yep, that's how it is.

Speaker 4 (10:08):
We talk as a team. We just want to be
one and oh, that's it.

Speaker 7 (10:11):
Once you start conference playes worry about being one and oh,
let everything else take care of itself. So our mind
is completely on being one and oh for this game
right here, and that's it. And then we'll get to
the next one because this is the biggest game of
the week because it's the next game.

Speaker 5 (10:24):
Of the week.

Speaker 4 (10:26):
I think I heard a guy named Pat he'll say
that one point. Well, yeah, i've heard you've heard it.
You've heard it.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
Well, Coach Skipper played for Pat Hill in this rivalry,
so we'll get some of his memories about San Jose
State when we come back. If you've got a question
for the coach or Steven Schitz Center away on the
x app or Twitter hashtag askfes.

Speaker 5 (10:43):
Or just come hang out at the Point.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
The food's great, they've got whatever you want to drink,
and we've got prizes to give away. Given away a
mini black Bulldog helmet, some gift cards and two season
tickets to Bulldog Men's Basketball, which opens up November eighth
at the Save Mart Center. Come find us at the
Point tonight, northwest corner of Willow and Knees the Bulldog
Football Hour on the Bulldog Sports Network from Deerfield.

Here in the heart of California, traditions are as deeply
rooted as the abundant fields that drape our valley. They
link us across generations. They make us who we are.
So what does it mean when traditions unite? When a
beacon of hope beats a source of pride. When you
combine a place that's full of life with people who
can save a life, we call it a victory for

(12:58):
our Valley, for our kids, for generations to come. Valley

Speaker 3 (14:12):
Welcome back to the Bulldog Football Hour. We're here at
the Point Patio Bar and Bistro. Wouldn't you know it,
We're on the patio, so if you come to the Point,
don't look inside. Although it's nice in there. The patio
is spectacular and that's where we hang out on Wednesday
nights with Coach Skipper and assorted bulldog players.

Speaker 5 (14:29):
This week we have a bulldog.

Speaker 3 (14:30):
Who has a little family history on both sides of
this rivalry, and that's going to be fun to talk
about with Steven Schitt once he rolls up. If you're
not here yet, you still have time to come and
enter to win a Black Bulldog mini helmet or two
season tickets to Bulldog Men's basketball, or we have two

(14:51):
different winners for gift cards to the Kennel Marketplace, which
has a huge array of black Fresno State merchandise. I
like the way you're wearing tonight, Coach. That's the old
all black Yeah, Adidas, the Bulldog scripts and it's got
a little what a couple buttons there. It's not the
old quarters yet it's button up.

Speaker 4 (15:10):
What a collar?

Speaker 5 (15:11):
I liked that.

Speaker 4 (15:12):
I'm not a big collar guy. Oh you look good
at the caller tonight.

Speaker 5 (15:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (15:17):
We don't have callers on this show as in c
A L L e R.

Speaker 5 (15:20):
But we do have.

Speaker 3 (15:21):
Questions that come in on social media. We've got one
here from Alan using that hashtag ask fs and this
ties in with our practice update presented by Pepsi, the
official soft drink of Fresno State Athletics. Alan wants to know,
how is the wide receiver room depth holding up with
some of the injuries your guys have sustained.

Speaker 4 (15:40):
We are deep in the ocean in the depth with
the wide receiver room.

Speaker 7 (15:43):
I put it that way, and we like to use
a lot of guys, so we're gonna continue that, continue
to keep doing that. Lyndon Ravar, he's he's gotten in there.
That Svado made some big plays in the game. Like
we're using tight ends more too, so we are deep
in the ocean, and it is what it is. We're
all bulldogs. Injuries are part of it, so we just

(16:05):
keep on rolling.

Speaker 8 (16:08):
You know.

Speaker 3 (16:08):
You mentioned NADOs Vado and he made a couple of
big plays in that Nevada game, and coach mccannon on
Monday pointed out how he reached out and volunteered to
be in a package just so he could block for
Joshua would Now that is his roommate, so that that
might have been a.

Speaker 5 (16:23):
Little extra incentive.

Speaker 3 (16:25):
But how often does something like that happen where a
guy's banging down your doors they got you know, coach,
I want to do this, which isn't a me thing, right,
It's not to give me the.

Speaker 4 (16:33):
Ball, it's a let me help somebody else get in.

Speaker 7 (16:35):
Yeah, especially that position, never ever will go in there
talking about blocking. They went the ball, so to have
that happen is awesome. He's that type of kid though.
He just wants to help the team. He knows we're
deep in the ocean as far as depth goes, so
he just wanted to get out there and work. And
then he actually got the ball and did some things too,
so we were warded him that way also, and there's
some love there between him and Josh also, so it

(16:57):
was good good to see.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
Yeah, he's got a little electricity with the ball in
his suns, and he's got quite a story.

Speaker 5 (17:04):
We'll hear more of that on the pregame show Saturday.

Speaker 3 (17:06):
I didn't know until talking to him this week of
practice that his mother immigrated from Guatemala as a teenager,
and he sure has a lot of admiration and respect
for her and a few other people with Bulldog Pass
that helped him get here to Fresno State. So we'll
hear more about that Saturday during our pregame show again.
Five o'clock kicks Saturday for homecoming. Three o'clock is when

(17:27):
the pregame show starts with that tailgate show. Bring the
juice tailgate there on Bulldog Boulevard. We'll have some special
guests out there. We've got Coach Skipper here tonight at
the Point Patio Bar and Bistro. And speaking of the
receiver room, there was a name added to the Bolitnikoff
Award watch lists this week. That's the award that goes
to the top wide receiver in all of college football.

(17:49):
You want to tell all these people out here on
the patio whose name got penciled in there on that.

Speaker 7 (17:53):
List And he's been here so that's awesome too. So
everybody that was here that show he was here, got
to meet him and see him is on that list.

Speaker 4 (18:01):
Now, yeah, deservedly so yes, absolutely, big time.

Speaker 7 (18:08):
And he will also be one of our captains for
the game this week, so huge, huge.

Speaker 5 (18:14):
And he became an uncle for the first time a
couple of weeks too.

Speaker 4 (18:16):
We've got a whole lot of becames and first times.
That's good.

Speaker 5 (18:20):
How many nieces and nephews you have? I have two?

Speaker 4 (18:23):
Thirty four?

Speaker 5 (18:24):
I have four?

Speaker 4 (18:25):
Yeah, four.

Speaker 7 (18:26):
The oldest one actually played football at FAU and is
now working in the recruiting office over there. So yeah,
we'll try to get him over here to Fresnel so too.
It sounds like a good idea deal with another skipper.

Speaker 3 (18:39):
I think there's a pretty good track record with that
name here at Presno State. And there's another name that
looms pretty large in Bulldog history, the name Ron Cox.
Do you remember the first time you either saw or
heard the man the myth the legend number fifty four?

Speaker 4 (18:57):
Yeah, I actually do so.

Speaker 7 (18:58):
I was in high school and my dad's coaching the NFL,
and they played against the Bears, and I didn't know
that he was played at President State. I didn't even
know he played with my brother. So that's when the
first time I knew.

Speaker 4 (19:11):
Who he was, and I kind of was like, all right,
cool and new.

Speaker 7 (19:14):
There's no internet and all that, and I wouldn't know
how to work it anyways. So then I get here
to play and I start looking at the records and
stuff in the stats, and then I see he had
fifty sacks for his career in twenty eight and one year.

Speaker 4 (19:26):
It still shocks me to this day.

Speaker 7 (19:28):
And that was nineteen ninety six the first time I
saw it, and here we are twenty twenty four, and
I'm still shocked by it. Nobody's going to get close
to I think coach Franklin actually is second behind it,
but it's a long way to go. I don't know
if people really comprehend and understand how hard it is
to get fifty sacks.

Speaker 4 (19:45):
That would be hard to do in twenty years, be
hard to do in.

Speaker 3 (19:48):
Twenty years and twenty eight in one season. Be honest,
did you think that was a typo the first time
he saw it?

Speaker 4 (19:53):
Absolutely? I still kind of want to ask him.

Speaker 5 (19:55):
About it, but just be careful when you ask. He's
still pretty strong, very strong, very strong.

Speaker 4 (20:02):
And that we have the Cox box by the practice field.
Can't forget that too. To his construction business, so he's
doing all kinds of things.

Speaker 3 (20:09):
And so he will be the first Bulldog in that
ring of honor who played exclusively on the defensive side
of the ball during his Fresno State tenure. Going to
be fine to have Ron back. I'm sure you're gonna
hear from him on the broadcast Saturday. You guys will
be in the locker room when he has his big
moment at halftime down on.

Speaker 5 (20:24):
The field, but you can catch some video of it
later on. We miss all the good stuff.

Speaker 3 (20:28):
But now I got to pick on you a little
bit because you said you didn't know about him when
he was playing with your brothers, so you only watch
the offense back then you're only watching Kelly score touchdowns
and not wrong, get all those sacks.

Speaker 7 (20:38):
I suppose, I suppose just worry about twenty six running
out there.

Speaker 3 (20:43):
Well, he had a pretty stellar career in a Bulldog
uniform as well. We're here at the point Patti Obar

Speaker 4 (26:23):
I can't wait for you to see the special presentation.

Speaker 3 (26:26):
For Saturday's Hero of the game. That's going to be
something you've never seen before. Ron Cox going into the
Ring of honor at halftime, a postgame drone show, the
black uniforms, and what am I forgetting?

Speaker 5 (26:38):
Coach a win for sure? Okay, yeah, there's a game.

Speaker 4 (26:43):
Homecoming, ron Cox, all that stuff.

Speaker 3 (26:46):
Coach Tim Skippers here will be joined in our next
segment by Bulldog senior Steven Scheite. Our program brought to
you tonight by Table Mountain Casino Resort. Have a lucky
day followed by an epic night only a Table Mountain
Casino Resort. You can have a pretty night out here
at the Point I see the chips and salsa are
still up to snuffing.

Speaker 5 (27:03):
Are those of the famous tachos right there?

Speaker 3 (27:05):
The tachos, I don't know if they're on the menu anymore,
but if you ask for them, they'll show up. You know,
this is a great place. They take care of you.
Anybody having the steak bites tonight? I thought I smelled
them somewhere. Oh yeah, Scott's having them back there. Ohj
what are you diving in on over there?

Speaker 4 (27:19):
I can't tell? Is that meatball's meatball?

Speaker 5 (27:21):
See?

Speaker 4 (27:21):
Hey, the red sauce gave it away.

Speaker 3 (27:24):
If you don't have to talk with your mouthful, it's okay.
So coach, we need to talk about this rivalry a
little bit. You played in it. In fact, you had
an unforgettable moment the last time you played against San
Jose State your senior year two thousand. You want to
let everybody know what special moment unfolded there on the

(27:48):
muddy crowned grass field they used to have in San Jose.

Speaker 7 (27:53):
Other than the fact we won the game, I think
you're referring to my interception. Okay, had a nice one
handed interception and it was the only interception of my career.
It was awesome, great feeling, great feeling, especially that happened
against them in their stadium in my last regular season
game of my whole entire career. So I got to

(28:14):
the sideline and then the team tackled me. So that's
what I remember about it.

Speaker 3 (28:18):
It was the last regular season game of your career.
And now I'm just thinking back. If I remember right,
the situation that year was, whoever wins that game is
going to go to this Silicon Valley Football Classic.

Speaker 5 (28:30):
Yep.

Speaker 3 (28:30):
So if you guys didn't win that game, it would
have been the last game of your Bulldog career.

Speaker 4 (28:33):
Absolutely, So we can't not win the game.

Speaker 3 (28:37):
And you finally got that interception in one handed fashion
playing middle linebacker.

Speaker 7 (28:42):
Absolutely, And then we went to Silicon Valley Bowl and
the whole team was talking about seeing Destiny's Child at halftime.

Speaker 4 (28:51):
Whatever happened to those ladies, I don't know.

Speaker 3 (28:53):
I think they're kind of famous now. And of course
we know what an epic game that was against Air Force.
And we'll see the Falcons again here in a couple
of weeks. But this week it is the rivalry the
Valley Trophy on the line. Fresno State San Jose State.
Now some of the same personnel as last year, different
head coach, same defensive coordinator.

Speaker 5 (29:15):
Can you see an imprint already?

Speaker 3 (29:18):
Just seven games in and it's a five and two start,
really close to being six and one.

Speaker 5 (29:22):
They lost a double overtime game to Washington State. Can
you see.

Speaker 3 (29:26):
Ken Neo Montalolo's stamp on the identity of the Spartan
team and how they play already?

Speaker 4 (29:31):
Absolutely? And now he's the winningest coach in Naval Academy history. Well,
I let that soak in.

Speaker 7 (29:36):
So he knows what he's doing, and he has some
athletes that he's using in a very unique way. He's
moving guys around, he's getting people open. In the Naval Academy,
he was running option stuff, you know what I mean,
Triple option and all that. Now he's running, run and
shooting and throwing it all over the yards. So he's
showing his range as a coach. He has the kids

(29:57):
playing his with his personality. I mean, they do it
a lot of cute stuff, but they also they'll get
downhill and.

Speaker 4 (30:02):
Hit you too.

Speaker 7 (30:02):
So their defense is disruptive. I mean they getting a
ton of turnovers. They're blitzing from everywhere. They're changing up
their front, So we're gonna have a challenge. We have
a good plan. I feel confident in the plan, but
definitely gonna be a real challenge.

Speaker 4 (30:16):
They're a good team and we need to be ready
to go.

Speaker 3 (30:19):
Yeah, it is quite a departure offensively from what he
ran in Annapolis.

Speaker 5 (30:23):
And I was.

Speaker 3 (30:24):
Wondering if you guys, like, say, when you go to
Las Vegas from Mountain West football media days, do you
guys always head coaches like sit around and brainstorm, catch
you names that you could throw on an offense or
a defense, because I guess in San Jose they're calling
this the spread and shred offense like that.

Speaker 7 (30:40):
You know, there's all kinds of discussions when you get together,
but you let the opponents give you the nicknames.

Speaker 4 (30:45):
That's the best way to get it.

Speaker 7 (30:46):
So once you get the game over and then you
hear the press conferences, every now and then a coach
will slip up with a nickname that kind of catches sometimes.

Speaker 3 (30:56):
Sorry if I got distracted, I think I smelled some
with those French fries coming out or something.

Speaker 5 (31:00):
Toss something smells really good.

Speaker 3 (31:01):
Here at the point Patiobar and Bistro it's all good
and even better, you might take home a special prize
tonight if you come join us again. If you have
questions for the coach or for senior linebacker Steven Scheitt,
you can send him our way on social media use
that hashtag askfs on Twitter or the xAPP as it's called.

Speaker 5 (31:19):
Now.

Speaker 3 (31:20):
We're brought to you by Bulldog Bread, the official NIL
collective of Fresno State Athletics.

Speaker 5 (31:24):
Just support student athletes.

Speaker 3 (31:25):
Visit Bulldog Bread our ead dot com. You know, Coach,
there was a question earlier this year, I think maybe
our first week, someone wanted to know, Hey, who's that
guy that stands next to Tim Skipper on the sideline
and you talked about Mason and all the stuff he
does for your program, And you've got somebody else here
tonight who's kind of the other half of your brain?

(31:46):
I think, I mean, do you know where you're supposed
to be on a road trip until you get a
text or an email or just a hello from Ali Banducci.

Speaker 4 (31:56):
Give it up for rally here.

Speaker 7 (32:00):
So we saw Ali right over here, sitting over there
next to Savannah, who does a ton for us also,
But Ali is behind the scenes and she's just in
charge of all our operations. So how Paul gets his
seat on the plane, how I get my seat on
the plane. By the way, if you're complaining about being
the middle seat, it's heard of blame for not me.

Speaker 4 (32:17):
I haven't been in the middle all year, So you
can have her to think.

Speaker 7 (32:20):
Yeah, but she handles everything, everything that you see that happens,
how we get to the game, how we're on time
for warm ups, to the kickoff, to whatever it is.
She handles all of that, and more importantly, she deals
with me all the time, which I know is a hassle.

Speaker 4 (32:34):
So just wanted to give you your.

Speaker 7 (32:36):
Recognition because I know you just sit behind the desk
all day and take care of business for us, But
we appreciate.

Speaker 4 (32:41):
You give it up rally.

Speaker 3 (32:44):
You know, there are so many unsung heroes in a
successful college football program, and this has been a successful
program for a long time. Tim Skipper part of that
success as a player, now as a coach. And this rivalry,
how are the players sick of hearing it from you?

Speaker 5 (33:02):
Guys?

Speaker 11 (33:02):
Now?

Speaker 3 (33:02):
I mean because you got you played in this rivalry.
Jad Williams played in this rivalry. Jethro Franklin played in
this rivalry. Coach Coyle, coach Baxter coached in this rivalry.

Speaker 5 (33:11):
Who am I forgetting?

Speaker 3 (33:12):
I mean that there's so much history between Fresno State
and San Jose State.

Speaker 7 (33:16):
Definitely, I hope not, because they gonna hear about it
again tomorrow and the next day and the next day
until we get that trophy back here. So it's a
big robbery. The older you are, the more you appreciate it.
So we're just gonna set some new memories once we
get the Saturday night. We just need to play bulldog football,
have that chrophy with us in our hands, and run
back up that ramp, happy Bulldogs, and.

Speaker 3 (33:41):
You know there's a little history here. You know, even
just you look at the last two years. When you
guys played them two years ago, people forget. I mean,
you guys had had the rough start because Jake Hanner
breaks his ankle, Evan Williams looks like he's out for
the year.

Speaker 5 (33:56):
You're one and four.

Speaker 3 (33:58):
That game against San Jose State was a line in
the sand and David Perals showed up had four sacks.
You won that game seventeen to ten with Logan five
at quarterback, and without that, you guys don't make the
history of being the first one and four team to
win ten games and win that Mountain Wiset Championship. And
then last year you guys were really rolling and then
you got to San Jose and I mean that was

(34:19):
a dominating performance from the Spartans. They took something from
your guys. So did those memories play in you think
to your players' emotions and how geared up they are
for Saturday at five o'clock.

Speaker 4 (34:30):
Most definitely.

Speaker 7 (34:31):
Those are two completely different games right there, and the
home teams won it. When we played them here two
years ago, we were at the bottom of the bottom.
I mean, we looked like a sick football team. Everybody
was in the hospital type thing, and nobody thought we
were gonna win the game. And we came out and
played had some great individual efforts and that kick started
the streak. It kickstarted everything, and we just kept on

(34:53):
rolling throughout the season. So that just shows you how
one game can change your whole season. And then this
last year, the memory don't really like talking about, but
they give them their due. They came out and they
whooped us. I mean from the jump, from the jump
from play one all the way throughout the game. They
got us so and it was at their play. So
we're kind of even. If you just look at the
last three years, you know they won, we won. So

(35:15):
now we're on the third year, third game of the
three years here and we'll see who can break this
thing up a little bit. So our whole jobs to
separate play bulldog football. We didn't do that last year.
We did it two years ago, so we need to
do that again this Saturday.

Speaker 3 (35:30):
Sounds like the people on the patio are ready to
run out onto the field with you on Saturday. I
think you got them pretty fired up out here at
the point, Patty, o us join us before we let
you go. I chomped down on those wings in that
wedge salad. What are you gonna throw some jolopenos on
there for?

Speaker 7 (35:45):
I'm leaving that to you, Okay, the alipeno's messing with
my stomach.

Speaker 5 (35:50):
Pat Hill will appreciate your pronunciation. I'll give you that
for sure.

Speaker 3 (35:54):
So talk to me about the young man that we're
gonna have our public address announcer mattleeya or introduce here
in just a moment. You've got a guy on your
team with a lot of football in his family history,
a lot of football in his career. Number fifty three,
Stephen Schite, what have you appreciated about coaching him as
a position coach last year and now his head coach

(36:15):
this year?

Speaker 5 (36:15):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (36:16):
Awesome.

Speaker 7 (36:17):
I think I'll start like this, so everybody knows him
as Steven Schite, but I call him Thumbshite.

Speaker 4 (36:23):
And the reason I.

Speaker 7 (36:24):
Call him Thumbshite is because I don't know if it's
dislocation or it just bent all the way back or whatever.
His thumb was dislocated and wouldn't go back in. So
he's screaming, hollering in pain and he cannot get his
thumb back in to whatever ligaments whatever he had. So
eventually and I think, if I remember right, you put

(36:44):
it back. I think you put it back, got it
back in on on his own, and was all right
after that, because I'm thinking, all right, he's gonna be
done for the year. We're not even having this year.
So he ends up having surgery. Couldn't lift because he
loves to work out. He couldn't lift all summer, and
then we get to August and he's out there practicing
a raidar role. So he is a tough, tough dude,

(37:07):
tough dude on and off the field. With everything that
he does. He's like the type of guy that it
like wrestle alligators or something. You know, He's like that
type of guy, no fear type dude. So comes from
a coaching family just like I do. So he understands
and knows there's no excuses you get through whatever obstacle
you have in front of you. He plays linebacker, He's
on most of our special teams, makes a lot of plays.

(37:29):
He's a physical tone setting guy. Like when I look
out there and I want to see who's gonna set
the tone for the game, he's that guy I know
opening kickoff, He's a guy I'm looking at. So he's
a bulldog. He grew up here, he loves it here.
He's what the valley's all about. And I'm excited to
watch him go play on Saturday. Outstanding and now we're
excited to hear from him here in the moment. And
I'm looking the people on the radio. Can hear the

(37:51):
fountain behind us? And there's plenty of water here for
a gator to fit in there? Does anybody have an alligator?

Speaker 5 (37:56):
Stephen could?

Speaker 3 (37:57):
Okay, never mind, coach, Thanks for hanging out as always
and putting up with me. Good luck Saturday night. I
think there's going to be a sold out crowd, all
wearing black to back. Yeah, it's gonna be awesome.

Speaker 7 (38:08):
As many times I've been in the stadium, I've never
seen a blackout, so I'm excited about that.

Speaker 4 (38:12):
So we just gotta go play and it's gonna be fun.

Speaker 3 (38:15):
Can't wait Saturday five o'clock to kick off. He's coach
Tim Skipper. When we come back.

Speaker 4 (38:19):
You hear from Bulldogs senior linebacker Steven Scheite.

Speaker 3 (38:21):
If you want to win those prizes, hurry on over
to the point northwest corner of Willow andees the Bulldog
Football Hour on the Bulldog Sports Network from their.

Speaker 11 (38:28):

but number one in your heart. Please welcome Steven Shite.

Speaker 3 (42:25):
Hey, when's the last time you had an introduction like that?

Speaker 8 (42:30):
Uh? Never, I've never had an introduction like that.

Speaker 3 (42:34):
Well, you did have a good one before the break
from your coach, Tim Skipper, and he talked about your thumb.

Speaker 5 (42:39):
Injury last year.

Speaker 3 (42:41):
You must have been really concerned about your golf game
if your thumb was hurting like that.

Speaker 8 (42:44):
Yeah, I was.

Speaker 15 (42:45):
I had a resort to one handed golf. I just
golfed with my left hand the whole time, and it
was a pain, but still had fun playing and still
giving a match with some of my teammates.

Speaker 3 (42:58):
I was gonna say, did that actually improve your golf
game having to play one handed for a while.

Speaker 8 (43:02):
No, it was a challenge.

Speaker 15 (43:03):
It was a challenge, but once I was able to
hit the ball straight, it was a lot of fun.

Speaker 3 (43:08):
Boy, how many of you out here are saying if
I ever learned to hit the ball straight, golf's going
to be a lot of fun. We're talking to Steven Scheite,
senior linebacker for Fresno State, and let's talk about the
game you guys just won. Before we talked about this rivalry,
you know, coach was talking about how the team really
came together. The sideline energy was different. Did it feel
different for you Saturday night?

Speaker 8 (43:29):
Oh?

Speaker 15 (43:30):
It was definitely the most energy we've ever had of
the game, especially this year.

Speaker 8 (43:36):
And we lost a little bit of energy.

Speaker 15 (43:39):
Uh prior and don't know why, but we met Friday
night and that was the biggest key point is we
need to have more juice. And Coach Franklin would always
say we need to be popping and hopping, and so
that was the big thing going into Saturday. And we
were for sure popping and hopping, that's for sure.

Speaker 3 (43:59):
And it was a big dog victory and they're looking
for another one Saturday five o'clock against San Jose State.
And I don't know if there could be a player
on the team Steven, that we could have brought in
that would have more connection to this rivalry than you have.
Are there are guys from the Bay Area, guys who
grew up a few miles from the Spartan Stadium. But
why don't you tell everybody here and everybody listening why

(44:22):
you're so connected to not just Fresno State, but San
Jose State.

Speaker 15 (44:25):
Yeah, so with San Jose State. My grandpa and uncle
played for Santa State. My grandpa was a linebacker, long snapper,
and center, and then my uncle was tied in and
long snapper, I believe. And so yeah, I've heard about
Santa they State for a long time and they've I's

(44:47):
just always been tied with my family Santaday State, just
because of my grandpa and uncle.

Speaker 4 (44:51):
So your mom was the rebel who decided to be
a bulldog.

Speaker 15 (44:54):
Yeah, she was the smart one, she was the wise one, and.

Speaker 3 (44:59):
She became one of the great to softball players in
Fresno State history. And maybe someone that you inherited.

Speaker 4 (45:04):
Some of your golf ability from.

Speaker 15 (45:06):
Possibly, Yeah, some of her athleticism and golf ability definitely
got some from her.

Speaker 3 (45:11):
So that's your mom's side of the family and your granddad,
I believe. I was researching something years ago and I
saw his name pop up in a baseball story from
San Jose State too. I think he played a little
baseball while he was there. In addition to football, course,
he served in World War Two as well. But that's
your mom's side of the family. The football history on
your dad's side is pretty thick as well. You even
have a cousin on this year's Bulldog team because of

(45:33):
that legacy. Give us the snapshot of the shite side
of the family's football history.

Speaker 15 (45:39):
Yeah, so with the shite side, everyone neither played football.
They all played football and then they coached football. So
my dad he played at Mercede JC and then went
to San Francisco State, and same with my uncle. He
did the same thing, went to Mercede JAC and then
San Francisco State. And my dad's currently coaching at Fresno

(46:02):
City and he's been there for longer than I've been alive.

Speaker 8 (46:06):
And then my uncle Rob is at.

Speaker 15 (46:08):
Merced High School and he's been there for a very long,
too long time as well. And then my grandpa on
that side, he played football at Chico State and then
coached until he retired, including coaching your dad and your uncle.
And I'm old enough to have seen your dad and
your uncle play for a school that I know that

(46:29):
guy right over there knows very well, David the Dos
Palace Broncos. I saw your dad and your uncle put
a whopping on my lost Banis Tigers a couple times.

Speaker 3 (46:38):
I mean, that is some incredible football history. But then
you played for your dad at Fresno City College. He's
been the defensive coordinator there for coach Cabilia for a
long time.

Speaker 5 (46:47):
What was that like playing for your dad?

Speaker 15 (46:49):
It was probably my favorite year ever playing football. It
was so much fun and just it was just super cool.
It was a great experience and I learned so much
from him, and it was just definitely.

Speaker 8 (47:02):
A year I will never forget playing football.

Speaker 3 (47:05):
And I don't want to put words in your mouth,
but I think when you left Fresno City you were
really hoping that maybe there was a chance to play
at Fresno State, right.

Speaker 15 (47:14):
Oh, yeah, of course I was wanting to play at
Fresnes State right after, but didn't happen at that time.
So I went on to play at Eastern Michigan and
didn't think I would ever have the chance to play
at Present State, but Lord Willing got the opportunity once
I graduated from there. And coach Tedford gave me the
call and it was one of the best news I've.

Speaker 8 (47:35):
Ever heard, So it was awesome.

Speaker 3 (47:37):
Well, who was more excited when you got that news?
You or your mother? Who we hear cheering from the
stands every time fifty three does something.

Speaker 8 (47:45):
My mother, for sure, she was. I believe she was crying.

Speaker 15 (47:49):
I don't know, but she was a static And yeah,
I was just excited that I found a spot to
keep playing football. But it was special that I got
to come home and finish my last two years here,
especially so she could watch every game.

Speaker 8 (48:03):
And yeah, I know she was definitely more excited than once,
that's for sure.

Speaker 3 (48:07):
And you and I were talking about this last week.
I'm sure everybody here is going to be really shocked
with what line of work you want to get into
once you're done getting your masters here at Fresno State.

Speaker 15 (48:17):
You want to tell them, Yeah, I would like to
become a football coach. Keep it in the bloodline.

Speaker 8 (48:22):
Yeah, I want to.

Speaker 15 (48:23):
I know a lot about the game, and I feel
like it'd be a waste to just let it go
and sit on a TV and yell at the I
mean sill on the couch and yell at the TV.
So yeah, I want to keep just being involved in
football for as long as I can, So yeah, I
would love the coach.

Speaker 3 (48:39):
Anybody out here really good at watching football and yelling
at the TV.

Speaker 5 (48:44):
That's a fun pastime. You can do that on your
off days.

Speaker 3 (48:46):
We're talking to Steven Shiite, Bulldogs senior linebacker time for
our final break, but we'll have more with number fifty
three when we come back. If you've got a question
for him centered away on the x app Twitter, use

Speaker 3 (52:25):
Oh, it's such a beautiful evening out here on the
patio of the Point Patio Bar and Pistro. I wouldn't
mind doing another hour out here. I don't think we're
allowed to do that, but I know you guys wouldn't mind.
Steven Scheitt is with us Bulldog linebacker. We had coach
Skipper earlier and Steven was giving us his family tree,
which is just interwoven with this Fresno State San Jose
State rivalry. So many players, so many football coaches in

(52:48):
his family. It's homecoming for Fresno State Saturday at five.
But I understand there's a little homecoming history in your
family at.

Speaker 5 (52:56):
San Jose State too.

Speaker 8 (52:58):
Yeah, I've forgot to mention.

Speaker 15 (52:59):
Yeah, my grandma was the first ever homecoming queen at
Santas State.

Speaker 3 (53:07):
So if you guys win back this Vver Valley Trophy
on Saturday, it should probably just go to your house
for a while.

Speaker 8 (53:14):
That'd be pretty nice. Yeah, put it up in the
Elvis room home mom.

Speaker 3 (53:19):
Right next to all those golf trophies. So you're serious
about being a good golfer. What's your handicap right now?

Speaker 8 (53:24):
A nine.

Speaker 4 (53:25):
Do you get to play during the football season.

Speaker 8 (53:27):
Yeah.

Speaker 15 (53:28):
I try and play at least once or twice a week,
but mainly just once.

Speaker 8 (53:32):
Usually Tomorrow is usually the day I go.

Speaker 15 (53:34):
Out and try and play and get my mind off
football for a little bit.

Speaker 3 (53:39):
So it's almost like a little escape outlet for you.

Speaker 8 (53:41):
Yeah, and it's nice. It's good for me, that's for sure.

Speaker 3 (53:46):
We're talking to Steven Shiite, Bulldog senior linebacker. And you
know your position coach last year, your first year in
the program was Tim Skipper. Now he's the interim head coach.
What did you appreciate about him last year and what
have you seen changes he's taken on this greater responsibility.

Speaker 15 (54:02):
I mean last year, I mean he was awesome in
the LB room and it's cool because he's still involved
in the elk with the linebackers. And it's just his
knowledge of the game. I mean, he's extremely smart and
just he's I mean, he's like a player's coach. He
gets us, he understands us, and he's just awesome to
have around. He has a lot of energy and but yeah,
the biggest thing is his knowledge of the game. I've

(54:24):
learned so much from him these past two years. It's
been awesome.

Speaker 3 (54:29):
And I know you're not the only Bulldog who would
share those kind of sentiments about coach Skipper. We've got
a few minutes left. You know the black jersey thing. Now,
you played at a program in ipsil Ani where they
have a gray field and sometimes you guys wear gray jerseys.
I've never seen you guys wear green jerseys on your
green field here.

Speaker 5 (54:47):
But you're gonna wear black.

Speaker 3 (54:49):
Ones on Saturday night for you, for your teammates. Does
that mean something?

Speaker 15 (54:53):
Oh, it's awesome. I know when we first saw them,
we were all super excited. I mean, I remember when
I was a little kid going to one of the
blackout games. I think it was when they played Utah State.
I forget what you know?

Speaker 3 (55:06):
That was a Mount West championship in twenty thirteen. Yeah,
they I'm old, Sorry, go ahead.

Speaker 8 (55:10):
When they want.

Speaker 15 (55:11):
When they came out in the blackouts, I was like, dang,
that would be awesome to have that opportunity to wear
blackout uniforms in Bulldog Stadium. And the fact that we're
doing it and it's my final year. It's just a
dream come true, that's for sure.

Speaker 8 (55:26):
It's awesome.

Speaker 3 (55:27):
Fresno State and San Jose State homecoming five o'clock Saturday.
We've got a linebacker here. We had a linebacker head
coach with us. A linebacker. Ron Cox is going to
be honored. You were talking about golf. I may come
back to that if we have time. But you know
another thing that I notice. You're one of the guys
I always see in in chapel the night before a

(55:48):
game on the road, and the guy leading those chapels
is one of your old teammates who gave up his
football career to do that.

Speaker 4 (55:55):
Does that do something for the team dynamic.

Speaker 3 (55:58):
To have that kind of group that has that priority
to do that Friday night before a game.

Speaker 8 (56:04):
Oh, it's it's huge.

Speaker 15 (56:06):
I mean going to chap I look forward to it
every week, and I mean we're just it's nice to
go and get away from football and talk about what's
most important and so and we all get really close
because we have I mean some deep conversations. It's not
just in Chapel with Bible study. That's led by Cam

(56:27):
as well, and we just have all gone real closer
together than we've all especially have gone closer with the Lord.

Speaker 8 (56:34):
So it's been it's awesome. It's awesome, and.

Speaker 3 (56:38):
He's gonna have forty thousand close friends on Saturday night
for a sold out, blackout homecoming game at Valley Children's Stadium.
We have just a couple of minutes left, but I
know you love this game of golf and we could
probably talk about that a little bit more.

Speaker 5 (56:54):
Is there a greatest shot you've ever hit?

Speaker 15 (56:59):
Probably the whole one at Belmont. I had just chunked
my shot. T I hit a four iron, I chunked
it bad, and I was one eighty out and I
hit a seven iron.

Speaker 8 (57:12):
And made it. I was probably the wildest one.

Speaker 4 (57:15):
Did they like put a plaque on the course there
to commemorate that moment?

Speaker 15 (57:20):
No, but my mom actually has a plaque on a
whole one at Belmont for a hole in one on
the par four.

Speaker 5 (57:27):
A hole in one on the par four.

Speaker 3 (57:28):
Do you guys hear that? A hole in one on
the par fours? That's a double eagle on ace? How
long was that hole?

Speaker 8 (57:36):
I want to say it's like two sixty four.

Speaker 5 (57:39):
Yeah, So don't play with Raym.

Speaker 3 (57:41):
You're gonna be in trouble, Steven, Is there anything else
that you want the red wave that's going to be
the black wave Saturday night, to know about your team,
your teammates, and the reason you believe you guys can
still be a Mountain West championship squad in twenty twenty four.

Speaker 15 (57:57):
This is a team that loves the game, loves each other,
loves the valley, and we're gonna have a lot of energy,
lots of juice.

Speaker 8 (58:05):
We're gonna be popping and hopping all.

Speaker 15 (58:07):
The whole game, and we're gonna need the whole whole
stadium popping and hopping in order to get this done.
That's for sure, Well, popping and hopping these folks are
gonna be popping and hopping. I know you're probably ready
to pop something in your mouth. What are you getting
off the awesome menu at the Point here tonight?

Speaker 8 (58:24):
Uh?

Speaker 15 (58:24):
The taco think it was the I already forgot the
short rib tacos. Yeah, short rip tacos, Steve, were those
pretty good?

Speaker 5 (58:32):
Hey?

Speaker 3 (58:32):
Steve and Steve the short rip taco twins, Steven Schite,
Thanks so much man, Good luck Saturday night. Thank you,
Steven Shite, Bulldogs Senior Linebacker. We're out of time, but
come join us next week from six to seven here
on the patio of the Point Patio Bar and Bistro.

Speaker 5 (58:45):
Thanks for listening tonight to.
