Speaker 1 (00:01):
On the Bulldog Sports Network from Learfield. This is the Red,
White and Blue Dogs Honor Flight Welcome Home Show, presented
by American pistachio growers Powering the Valley one nut at
a time.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Also brought to you by Table Mountain Casino Resort, Lucky
Days and Epic Nights, and by Pepsi, official soft drink
of Fresno State Athletics. Live from the Fresno Yosemite International Airport,
here's your host, the Voice of the Bulldogs, Paul Leffler.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Well, good evening, everybody. We're here live at the Presno
Yosemite International Airport, the place to be tonight to welcome
home sixty seven veterans from their Central Valley Honor Flight.
Also the place to come talks in Bulldog football. Every
Wednesday night from six to seven, we have the Bulldog
Football Hour. Usually we're out there at the Point Patio
Bar and Bistro on the northwest corner of Willow and Knees,
(01:00):
and that's where we'll be next Wednesday night from six
to seven. So some of you here at the airport
tonight come join us next Wednesday as well. But one
guy who's always at the Point on Wednesday Nights is
here with us tonight at the airport, and that is
the head coach of your Fresno State Bulldog football team.
All right, Airport, I want to hear you for Coach
Tim Skipper. See we even have the band, and you're
(01:25):
a big fan of the Bulldog Marching band, aren't you.
It's always awesome with the band. We'll get that microphone
working here for you. And the Fresno State Bulldog Marching
Band has been here before for one of our homecomings.
But every single homecoming we have had the incredible Clovist
Community band, and we'll hear them here on the radio
a little bit later. We've been hearing your team dominate,
(01:47):
coach and Saturday night, man forty eight to nothing, you
played defense for the Dogs, the second all time leading
tackler in school history. How proud of you were you
of that defensive effort last Saturday night? Very proud of
those guys.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
I mean we got up big pretty early and the
third quarter were like, hey, we can get some more
guys in there. And then we were all like, look,
we don't want to give up the shutout though, so
we trusted in the guys that go in there. They
played awesome. Played whistle to whistle for four quarters all
the way to the very end. And it's a great
feeling on defense when you look at the scoreboard and
(02:21):
the other team has zero.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah, I was a great feeling. I could tell your
players really relished it too. And I'm not talking about
Pat Hill and the hot dog race when I say that.
And you have been clear about, you know, coaching up
the fans a little bit on how to help your
team win. How'd you think the fans did that last
home game? They were there, thirty nine thousand strong. Did
they cheer it all the right moments? I thought it
was awesome. I thought it was awesome.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
When I looked up right before the kickoff, I saw
a lot more red in the stands, so we got
in there early.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
I thought it was really really good.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
I think as we keep on improving as a team,
that'll keep on improving, and a Bulldog Stadium or Valley
Children Stadium would be a place that's very special and
weren't a special play tonight with a lot of special people.
We're here at the Fresno Yosemite International Airport where the
crowd is starting to build, but it's going to be
a whole lot bigger by the time that plane lands
at eight o'clock.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
If you're just tuning in, Yeah, there was a delay
back east, but they're on their way pretty soon. They'll
be opening those letters from loved ones that a lot
of people here at the airport tonight wrote to them.
Speaking of writing, if you don't have a sign to
welcome your veteran home, you can make them here. Denny's
has a table of signs and markers. You can scribble
out whatever you want for these veterans. Well, keep it
clean for these veterans who are coming home again. Eight
(03:30):
o'clock is when they'll land, probably marching through by eight thirty.
So spread the word, get some more of your friends
out here to the airport, and we're pumped to be
talking some bulldog football here. Coach. First of all, thank
you for I know it's not easy to get to
the airport on Wednesday nights, there's a lot of traffic.
Parkings hard, but thank you for making the extra effort
to be here to support the veterans. We appreciate that definitely. Definitely.
Speaker 4 (03:50):
All the sacrifice those guys do and stuff like that
is easy for me to just drive over here, that's
the easy part.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
Well, let's get our practice update, brought to you by Pepsi,
the official soft drink of Fresno State Athletics. So you
come off that forty eight to nothing win over New
Mexico State. Were the guys a little slow in practice
Tuesday because of the donuts you've gotten for that shutout? No,
I wouldn't say were a slower.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
We did have to install a lot of new stuff
this week because the University of New Mexico is going
to give us some different things, so we had to
install a lot.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
So there's a lot of thinking on Tuesday.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
And then today's practice was ten times better because it
was the second day of hearing the things. So tomorrow
should be closer to clean and perfect, and then Friday
will be fast and then we go Dog Day on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
Sounds like you got this thing pretty much down already
and you've only been coaching for like what four games?
Very organized, and this stadium that you're going to be
playing in Saturday night. The Bulldogs play at New Mexico
Saturday five thirty our time. Our pregame coverage well started
three thirty. This is where you coached the team to
a Bowl victory last year against New Mexico State, dedicated
that when to coach Tedford Or of course, had to
(04:58):
step down right before this season. Some special memories when
you think about going back into that stadium and what
your Bulldogs were able to do there last year, definitely
special memories.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
I think about all the players and the coaches and
the support staff that made that trip, and our backs
were against the wall and everybody counted us out, and
then we got the kickoff time and we were ready
to roll.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
There was a lot of planning and organization and.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
Deep heartfelt speeches to get to that point, and it
felt very, very good. I'll also say this, going into
this game, I feel ten times better. I feel a
lot more ready. I feel a lot more organized, a
lot more comfortable. So I'm excited for it and ready
to roll, you know. And it is Albutquerque.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
That's where the Bulldogs are playing this Saturday, five thirty
our time kick three thirty pre game. As I said,
and again we're here at the airport tonight. We'd love
to have you come join us. We're gonna be giving
away some tickets here in a little while. Where are
all our sailors from the more we want to make
sure they get some tickets to a Bulldog game. Some
of them have never been to a Bulldog game before,
and many of them are from all parts of the country.
(06:03):
Albuquerque is fifty three hundred feet above sea level, Coach,
and when you play a basketball game there, they always
remind you. They have it on the tunnel in the pit.
It says welcome to the pit, a mile high and
louder than and then it has dot dot I guess
you have to fill in the blank yourself. Playing football there,
have you ever noticed any difference because of that altitude?
(06:25):
And are there any things that you're trying to prepare
your team for or you're saying, Hey, don't even think
about it, guys, I don't want to make it bigger
than it is.
Speaker 4 (06:32):
We train all year round, so we're ready for any situation.
It could snow, it could be very windy, it could
be cold, it could be high altitude. Whatever it is,
we're training for it, and we're hydrating for it. The
hydration is the big major part. So as long as
you're in shape and you're hydrated, you're gonna be fine.
We play at elevation in this conference all the time,
So it's not something we talk about a lot. We
(06:54):
talk about it more in the off season. The conditioning
and the training that we're doing, the prepares for these moments.
So when it gets the game week or game time,
you're not even thinking about that. You already know your
bodies where it's supposed to be, and now you're focused
on just playing and doing what you need to do.
We're not too much into the reading the signs and
trying to let them play mind games with us.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
And I'm sure you just love it when people like
me ask you about it. You know you can ask
that question, I get a solid good answer. You always do.
He's coach Tim Skipper of the Fresno State Bulldogs. We're
here at the Fresno Yosemite International Airport because it's Honor
Flight night, the twenty ninth Central Valley Honor Flight. Going
to be landing in less than two hours, going to
be marching through the terminal by eight thirty. So bring
(07:33):
your friends, bring your family. Tell everybody you know, these
veterans deserve our gratitude, and we've got some pretty good
athletes on this fight. By the way, I may tell
you about a little bit later coach. When it comes
to your running game, that was a real encouraging sign
against New Mexico State, the way your team was able
to run the ball. Whether it was Malik Sharad, your
main man who went over one hundred yards for the
first time this year the fifth time in his career,
(07:55):
or big Elijah Gilliam from merced or the youngster from Visalia,
Bryceon Donaldson who showed a few things, or even your
backup quarterback. Now this guy, he's tied for the team
lead and touchdowns, Joshua Wood, your backup QB. He's scored
three times and he's only played fifteen plays. That doesn't
happen every year. You kind of have an embarrassment of
riches there, don't you. I'll start with Josh.
Speaker 4 (08:18):
Josh is kind of strategically getting into the game, and
we kind of game plan his plays, so he always
has a handful of plays that he has and he's
ready and prepared for I will say this, they gave
us a lot of different looks than what they've shown
than what we thought, and Josh kind of improvised and
made some things happen.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
So he's that type of player.
Speaker 4 (08:37):
He's that type of athlete, and that's the reason we're
trying to get him out there on the field as
much as possible. He just has a knack for getting
an the end zone and that's good, that's good for
all of us.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
And he told me his parents are going to be
at this game, and even his godfather lives in New Mexico,
so I guess we should probably expect to see him
a little more. And he also threw his first pass
the other day. Now, most people haven't really seen him throw.
And for over a year you couldn't watch him throw
because he couldn't throw after having the operation. Can you
give people? Maybe I know the other teams may be
(09:06):
listening here, but how good a pastor do you think
he has the potential to be. He's a really good passer,
to the grace of God, he's able to throw. Still.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
There was a time where we were kind of worried
if his shoulder would heal and come back to normal.
And he's actually lowered his shoulder the hurt shoulder on
some people trying to tackle him. So I'm sure he
can throw the ball and I see it every day
at practice. But that's what he is. He's a quarterback.
He's an honest to goodness quarterback. I know he's doing
a lot of running right now, but he's a thrower.
(09:34):
He likes to throw. He has a live arm and
at some point he'll be able to showcase as we
keep going, and.
Speaker 3 (09:40):
We're going to keep going here at the Fresno Yosemite
International Airport, the Central Valley on our flight scheduled to
land by eight o'clock, marching through by eight point thirty.
We'll talk some more bulldog football with the coach when
we come back. We're brought to you tonight by American
pistachio growers And I just learned this. I didn't know
this before. Did you know, Coach, that protein from pistachios
helped improve performance at elevation? Oh, I think we'll be
(10:02):
eating some pistachios, or as we like to call them,
pat stashios for your old coach, Pat Hill. We're brought
powered by the American pistachio growers, powering the valley one
nut at a time. We thank the American pistachio Growers
for their continued support at Fresno State Athletics and for
being the presenting sponsor of our show. Whether we're at
the point like we will be next Wednesday night from
six to seven on the corner of Willow and Knees
(10:22):
or here at the airport where I believe this box
in front of me has some pistachios in it. Anybody
wants some pistachios here today, we might have some to
throw out here at a moment. Come join us at
the airport and keep it here for the Bulldog Football
Hour on the Bulldog Sports Network.
Speaker 5 (10:34):

rooted as the abundant fields that drape our valley. They
link us across generations They make us who we are.
So what does it mean when traditions unite, When a

can save a life, we call it a victory for

our Valley, for our kids, for generations to come. Valley

Speaker 5 (12:36):
Bulldog Fans, just the old culture. Pat Hill here to

by an epic night at Table Mountain Cashino Resort.
Speaker 11 (13:08):
Some days you hit snooze, but not today. Today you
have to go on a run to get burgers for
the tail game. You've got to haul something heavy, a
cooler stocked with bud light, and you've got beer and football.
Nothing that's hard until the other team scores.
Speaker 8 (13:28):
Bud Light easy to drink, easy to.
Speaker 11 (13:31):
Enjoy, Enjoy responsibly twenty one plus copy right twenty twenty
four Endheuser Bush bud Light Beer Saint Louis, Missouri.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
Wide to the right. It's going to be Joshua Wood
taking this shotgun snap with Gillium to his left. Now
they bring Keen in motion right to left and they
fake the handoff to Gilliam. Wood. Ohs right in Joshua
Wood into the checkerboard. Two home games in a row,
the red shirt sophomore has scored a rushing touchdown.
Speaker 12 (14:00):
That's how you answer the bell coming out up thirty
one zero in the second half, get the ball taking
right down in score. Tell you what that josh Wood
Elijah Gilliam set is a very very dangerous short yardage set.
You have to respect Elijah Gilliam and then he lead
blocks for Joshua very difficult to stop on a defense.
Speaker 5 (14:21):
You know you said players got upset when you tell
them at zero zero at halftime. IM going to show
you want nothing. That's good.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Yeah, Pat Hill, We'll hear Mara, Pat Hill and Cammorill
on Saturday night when the Bulldogs battle the Lobos in Albuquerque.
We're here at the airport tonight the Bulldog Football Hour
changing venues so we can honor our veterans. Tonight, sixty
seven Valley veterans from twenty three different hometowns and seven
valley counties on their way home right now from Washington,
d C. Where they visited the World War Two Memorial
(14:50):
and the Korean War Memorial, and the Vietnam Memorial, and
the Air Force Memorial and the Navy Memorial and the
Marine Corps Memorial. This morning they got to be at
the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier. And right now they're on their way home.
So we can't wait to teer them on. And if
you're listening and you're not here yet, you still have time.
That plane got backed up a little bit, won't land
untill eight. They'll be marching at eight thirty, So bring
(15:12):
your family and we'll keep you entertained in the meantime
here at the airport. That's why Coach Skipper is here
talking about his Bulldog football team. Something else coming up
to the airport I'll tell you about in a little
while as well. And I forgot to throw out pistachios
in that commercial break, but I'll have to do that
when we come back. Let's talk about the trip ahead
presented by Golden Eagle Charter that preferred motor Coach and
Executive Transportation Service of Fresno State Athletics. Coach, were just
(15:37):
talking about your memories in University Stadium and Albuquerque from
the Bowl game last year. Some people don't know because
it's been a while, but you used to coach in
the state of New Mexico. Did you get a flavor
of the New Mexican culture? Because they if you go
to a restaurant there, they make it clear, this is
not a Mexican restaurant, it's a New Mexican restaurant. Did
(15:57):
you get a taste of that land of enchantment culture?
I did.
Speaker 4 (16:02):
My first memory. My first thought is green chilies are everywhere.
I mean everywhere, even McDonald's. You get a big Mac
and there's green chili's on it, no matter where you go.
So that was my number one thing that came to
mind when you started talking about food and things like that,
was just green chili. So the food is wonderful, really is,
(16:23):
it's awesome, But my mind's focused on football game.
Speaker 3 (16:26):
So I won't be eating any green chili's this trip.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
None, none, none, wow, ma, locked I eat the same
things all the time, like what, So Friday night, I
will eat three pieces of chicken that come with our
Friday night dinner, and then I'll have like half of
a potato with butter on it.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
And then Saturday.
Speaker 4 (16:47):
Morning, game day morning, I'll eat like some sausage or
some bacons, just like some proteins a little bit. And
then when we get to pregame meal before the game
three and a half hours for the game, I'll eat
some steak and some salad and I'm rolling. It's the
same all the time, so my body always feels the
same creature habit. So it's not a superstitious thing, No,
just I know how my body's gonna feel about eat
(17:08):
the same stuff, So all right, my mind works the
same way.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
Everything's consistent forty eight hour rule. So you don't just
have a scouting report for an opponent. You have a
scouting report for report for every meal. That's what you're saying.
Speaker 4 (17:19):
Most definitely, and okay, kind of I always know the menu,
so I've kinda been particular everywhere I've been to eat
the same stuff.
Speaker 3 (17:27):
Now you got me wondering if I've ever gone to
New Mexico and not eating green chili. Have something for me, Oh,
I will and red chili. I go Christmas on that stiff.
There you go, There you go. We're talking to Tim Skipper.
Bulldog red is his favorite color, and his bulldogs will
be taking on the Lobo Saturday night, five thirty in
Albuquerque tonight though we're at the Fresno Yosemite International Airport
(17:47):
because the honor flight is coming in tonight. We'd love
to have you join us and welcome them home. So
this trip ahead to Albuquerque, that means we need to
talk about the opponent a little bit. And New Mexico
came here last year on a big night for Fresno State.
It was the Knight. Aaron Judge had his number retired,
Mike batesl had his number retired, The house was packed,
(18:08):
the Bulldogs were ahead at halftime, and I think New
Mexico's done to all of us when they got out
of there with a win. And sorry for bringing up
bad memories, but I think it's something that's been on
your players' minds all week. Definitely been on our minds.
Speaker 4 (18:20):
It was also senior night, so they put a damper
in a lot of stuff. This is a very scary,
dangerous team, like they have some really good athletes. The
record says zero and three, but they play like their
three and zero. We're gonna have to be on point.
That's why when I leave here, I'm going back to
the office because we have to keep working all the
way up to kickoff time. They are physical, played very
(18:42):
very hard. Broncom in the Hall has these guys playing.
It's not gonna be easy by any means. We're gonna
have to play bulldof football. Have to bring our a game.
They've been close in a lot of games, and they
played two Power five opponents. It's been close at halftime,
they've taken some leads, and then they've kind of lost
it there in towards the end of the third.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
The fourth quarter.
Speaker 4 (19:00):
So we have to start out fighting from the jump
and then we have to be consistent throughout the four
quarters of the game. So if we do that, we'll
be fine. But there's definitely a bad taste in our mouth.
Just thinking about their logo, saying their logo, saying.
Speaker 3 (19:14):
Their name kind of get you mad a little bit.
So we have to go play though.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
All that is what it is, and it's time to
go see what we're gonna do on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
Can't wait. That's a five thirty kickoff Saturday Night. Three
thirty is when our pregame show will begin. Bulldog's next
home game won't be till October twelfth, when Washington State
comes in. That's gonna be boots and Buckles night. So
if you've got a little cowboy flair in your life,
be ready to be there at the stadium decked out
on October twelfth. October twenty sixth this homecoming. November two,
(19:44):
Hawaii comes in, and we have some tickets maybe for
all of those games that we're gonna give away here
at the airport tonight, so we'd love to see you.
We're gonna be here for a while. The plane's not
gonna land until eight o'clock. When it comes to talent
on this new Mexico squad a lot of roster turnover.
They've got more than forty transfers into the program, but
they also have some familiar faces, including a quarterback who
(20:06):
was a little hard to handle last year against you guys.
Speaker 4 (20:09):
Yeah, he's a phenomenal athlete. He's a guy that has
not been sacked this whole year so far in three games,
and you could see it on the today. It's hard
to even touch them just to get DNA on them.
So to wrap him up and get him to the
grounds a whole nother thing.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
We're gonna have to keep him in the pocket. We
have to contain him.
Speaker 4 (20:26):
He does a great job of just taking plays and
extending them and then he'll find open receiver after he's
been running around for ten seconds.
Speaker 3 (20:34):
It's crazy. They do a good job of it.
Speaker 4 (20:37):
It's designed scramble jewel routes and if they don't catch it,
then they get pis because guys are chasing guys and
running into guys.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
So he's a very good quarterback.
Speaker 4 (20:46):
We found that out last year and we're gonna have
our hands full and we have a plan for him
and hopefully it works.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
Devin Dan Pierre is the New Mexico quarterback. Plenty of
talent at the skill positions too, and a defense that
seems to have a little differnt energy this year under
Bronco menden Hall's leadership. Schematically, are there some pretty significant
differences into how New Mexico tried to attack you last
year on both sides of the ball.
Speaker 4 (21:10):
Definitely on defense, they're gonna make the game very dirty,
so they want to move the front up front with
the D line. They're gonna blitz their linebackers. If they
get you behind schedule, they're gonna keep coming after you.
They take chances. They'll play some Cover zero. Their main
base defense is Cover four. They try to disguise it
a little bit and things like that, but their defense
is very opportunistic. They're gonna try to cause some turnovers
(21:33):
and we're gonna have to play sound football in order
for us to be successful come Saturday.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
Their offense, they do multiple things.
Speaker 4 (21:41):
Like I talked about. The quarterback runs the ship, he
handles everything. He's hard to tackle. Have very good running backs.
They have speed at receiver. They have some big old
tight end bodies that they use. They helping the run game.
Their whole line is huge, very big. So we're gonna
have our hands full. But we're looking forward to the game. Well,
we're really looking forward to it.
Speaker 3 (21:58):
We'll have that broadcast for you Saturday, a five thirty
kick three thirty, the pregame show. Pat Hill will be there.
Cam morel will be there. Who knows, maybe they'll show
up here at the airport tonight. We're waiting for the
twenty ninth Central Valley Honor flight to come home. And
we've got a few more minutes with Coach Skipper before
we bring some other guests on the radio. For the
rest of this hour, you might even hear a little
bit of the Clovist Community Band is here ready to
(22:20):
play those service songs non stop till every veteran marches through.
If you want to come cheer on the vets, you
can stop at the table where Denny's has posters for
you to make yourself. They've got some markers for you
to make those posters with. Everything's covered here at the
Fresno Yosemite International Airport tonight, and you have a chance
to make some very special memories for some very special veterans.
(22:42):
You know, I was talking to your defensive line coach,
Jethro Franklin, who you remember when you were playing as
a Bulldog coach. Did you know he was born on
a military base in France. He's told me that a
million times. He's very proud of that, very proud of that.
Then next time you see him, tell him to start
talking to you in a little French. Has he taught
you any of it?
Speaker 5 (23:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (23:02):
No, he speaks too fast when he goes to that
doesn't want us to know. He really doesn't know it.
Oh the secret is out. Well in a few minutes,
I'm gonna have you maybe give away some bulldog tickets.
I'm looking for the guys in the white uniforms, the
sailors from nas The more it's kind of cool. Every
time we do one of these flights, those sailors show
up and they line the hallway and standard attention to
(23:25):
salute our veterans coming through. And one of the sailors
who's been a ring leader of that and organized all
the nas Lamour sailors every trip for the last few years,
Chief Eric Costelanos, is actually on the plane right now
as a guardian for one of our vets, a fellow sailor.
That's pretty cool. A lot of really incredible storylines among
these sixty seven veterans all the flight. But let's talk
(23:47):
a few more football storylines before we let the coach
go here. You know, you've had three games now with
this group. You open up at Michigan, Man, that was
a game in the fourth quarter, if you score with
four minutes left, it's a six point game, and Michigan
and could feel that. You could tell that. Then you
come home, get a big lead against Sacramento State, they
get within a score before you put them away. And
(24:07):
last week we saw the total domination forty eight nothing.
But my guess is you don't think this team has
quite arrived yet. So I'm wondering a couple things. A.
Is there something you've learned about this group that you
didn't really know until you've had these three games? And
what are the areas improvement that you're kind of on
them about that you're driving hard, pressing and trying to
(24:29):
get them to master.
Speaker 4 (24:31):
I think I learned that these guys will fight. They'll fight,
they'll fight to the end. There's no situation they're not
ready for, you know, adversity. We're built for that, and
when it sets, as a coach, you're like, ah, we're
going to respond to it.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
So it's been.
Speaker 4 (24:44):
Great that we've had some little close kind of games
here and then we had a New Mexico State game
where we kind of got up in the leads. We
had to deal with that also, So we've dealt with
a lot. We always want to be peaking when we're
getting the conference play, and that's where we're at right now.
So hopefully we see some consistent and seeing our play
some championship level conference championship level football, and that's the
(25:06):
challenge for us now, that's what we want to see.
Want to see the consistency and playing like champions playing
Bulldog football, and if we get that would be very
successful season. It starts right now this week, right now
with conference play.
Speaker 3 (25:18):
It is the conference opener. Conference schedule this year is
just seven games because of Washington State and Oregon State
being part of that scheduling arrangement this year. Speaking of
Washington State and Oregon State, coach, it's been a few
days anyway since the big announcement came the Fresno State
in two years will join the PAC twelve. And you
guys are actively recruiting future Bulldogs right now. You've got
(25:41):
a lot of things going on at once. I mean,
here you are at the airport, You're probably going to
get ten texts from recruits by the time you walk
out the door. Is it too early to get a
feel for how that announcement and that future situation for
Fresno State is resonating in the recruiting world. No, it's
not too early at all. PAC twelve is a naw brand.
Speaker 4 (26:00):
It's a traditional brand that student athletes, prospective student athletes,
those guys really really it hits home when you tell
them we're going to the PAC twelve Like it's a
whole different sense of conversation.
Speaker 3 (26:11):
Even the guys that we have committed that were committed before.
Speaker 4 (26:14):
The announcement didn't even though the announcement is going to happen,
they have a bigger smile and they're more energy in
their conversations.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
So it's huge looking forward to it.
Speaker 4 (26:22):
When I think about this move we're making, I think
about coach Sweeney, Coach Hill, and coach Tedford all the
hard work they've done to build the program to get
it to this spot, to this point, because that was
their dreams to keep elevating the program and that we're
finally at that point. So a big thank you to
those guys and proud of them for everything they've done
for us.
Speaker 3 (26:41):
We are really looking forward to it. And one of
those teams, by the way, Washington State is the opponent
for the next home game, which is coming up October twelfth,
We've got a whole other plane full of visitors arriving
at Fresno Yosemite International Airport. Welcome to Fresno. Enjoy the
sequoia trees on your way through the terminal. Say hello
to coach Tim Skipper of your two to one Fresno
State Bulldog football team is going to Albuquerque this weekend,
(27:04):
and after you get your bags from baggage claim, come
back around and cheer for sixty seven veterans who are
coming home from their honor flight to Washington, DC tonight. Coach,
I'm gonna have you saal o to some sailors from
nas Lamore in a moment, and of course hand out
some tickets to some future Bulldog games. But for someone
who hasn't watched your team play yet this year, I
(27:26):
would love for you to give them a taste of
what you see on the sideline, because you've got a
whole lot of things going on at once. You're trying
to bark at referees, You're trying to listen on the
headset as play calls come in on offense, on defense,
on special teams, making sure no one's getting out of
the line. On your sideline. Maybe you're thinking about whether
you really want to eat that green chili even though
(27:46):
you said you're not gonna eat any and Albuquerque. But
for someone who hasn't this team play, how would you
describe it? What it's like to watch this twenty twenty
four Bulldog team play.
Speaker 4 (27:58):
You know a lot of bad words came to as
you were talking because it's so hectic. So I'm gonna
keep it clean, good tough, hard nose, aggressive play with
a lot of energy, love for the game.
Speaker 3 (28:12):
You will see love for the game when you watch us.
Speaker 4 (28:15):
Guys are flying around, playing physical, playing fast, enjoying it
and hopefully you see.
Speaker 3 (28:22):
A lot of winning. That would be the next part.
Speaker 4 (28:24):
You see a group of guys that love to play
with each other and have one common goal, of one
heartbeat of winning the game.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
I think that's what you'll see.
Speaker 4 (28:31):
I think it'd be proud of the product on the field,
and you'll also enjoy that the crowd is all in
red and very loud. So that's how I would symbolize.
Speaker 3 (28:39):
Bulldof football and build off football on a game day,
and we're gonna have a very loud crowd here at
the airport tonight wearing red and a little white and
a little blue. You guys have good colors at Presno
State kind of fits with a lot of things over
there with the red, the white, and the blue. And
you know what else you have is an incredible collection
of alumni. You're hearing the APPLA because some of our
(29:01):
sailors from nas Lamore are coming out. You're going to
meet one of them on the radio here in just
a few minutes. I'm going to make sure Coach Skipper
has a chance to meet him and invite him to
a Bulldog game. Something happened before your game Saturday, and
it was Heroes Night. I know you're focused on everything
between the lines, but while the game wasn't going on,
there was moment after moment where the fans could cheer
on someone in our community who's either serving in the
(29:22):
military or a first responder or in law enforcement. Those
people really risk their lives on a daily basis. And
before the game, I don't know if you had any
recruiters out there scouting, but there was a special flag
football game before your game. Did you hear about that
at all? I think I heard a little bit some
alumni playing. Well, there were I mean really it was
for another group of people. There's a Blackhawk helicopter there
(29:44):
that right now is right over there at the eleven
six tasm G are awesome helicopter unit here with the
Army National Guard. So we had the flight crews from
those helicopters on one team, and we had the mechanics
on another team. The roads versus the wrenches, gotcha. But
Marcus mcmaarrion and David Carr were their quarterbacks. Got it,
got it. So I know you've got three quarterbacks right
(30:06):
now that have all appeared in games, and Mikey Keane
and Joshua Wood and Jaden Mandle. But if you need
to bring your old teammate Dave Carr out of retirement,
just make sure they can't rush the passer.
Speaker 4 (30:16):
He'll be fine. Yes, he was throwing darts all day long.
No rush is his friend, for sure. I saw Dave
on the sideline. Actually, I wish I knew he was
playing in that because I would have messed with him
on the side, maybe tackled him.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
Said there you go.
Speaker 4 (30:31):
But that's two good Bulldog quarterbacks right there. They love
the game and I'm sure they want to play as
long as they can still throw, So that's awesome. Well,
we might make it bigger and better next year. Maybe
we'll bring you in for a little pregame coaching call
one play, I'll do the coaching. I'm not playing, I'll
do the coaching all for it.
Speaker 3 (30:48):
Do you still have any sore spots on your hand
from batting down a David Carr pass?
Speaker 4 (30:52):
And practice absolutely due the ball so hard. I think
the thing people don't realize with Dave, Dave could the
bench like four h five tank like he was one
of the strongest guys on the team.
Speaker 3 (31:02):
It's crazy and still might be actually at age forty five. Well, coach,
I'm gonna let you meet some of the awesome folks
here at the airport, especially our sailors here in a moment,
and give away some tickets. Is there anything else that
you think fans should be watching for Saturday night? Listening
for with Pat and Cam on our radio broadcast when
that Puppy kicks off.
Speaker 4 (31:23):
At five point thirty, I think you just tune in
and get ready for some excitement. I think we're gonna
be ready to play. It's gonna be exciting brand of football.
We be on the road, which is huge. We have
to win on the road, so we get in the
hostile environment and away from your comfort zone and you
have to play good ball.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
So you'll see some guys flying around.
Speaker 4 (31:40):
We're gonna wear all white, I don't even know if
the team knows that, and be white helmets, white uniform everything.
Speaker 3 (31:44):
So we're all white and we're gonna go play some
blulledoff football. Breaking news. Dog's going with the blanco look
Land of Enchantment this weekend. All white, all white, a
little too early to snow in Albuquerque, although it does,
yes it does, so no camouflage. Saturday, Coach, really appreciate
you coming out here to support our veterans. Good luck
Saturday night. Thanks a lot, Thank you appreciate it. How
(32:06):
about a hand for Tim Skipper, coach of your Fresno
State Bulldogs, looking to go three and one as they
battle the Lobos Saturday. When we come back, we'll talk
to one of our sailors from NS Lamore who's here
to welcome home to the vets tonight. Come join us
at the airport eight o'clocks when that plane's going to
touch down. Hey, touchdown sounds good, doesn't it. And then
eight thirty they'll be marching through Keep it here on
the Bulldog Sports Network from Learfield.
Speaker 5 (32:26):

Speaker 8 (34:28):
Here in the heart of California.
Speaker 10 (34:29):
Traditions are as deeply rooted as the abundant fields that
drape our valley. They link us across generations, They make
us who we are.
Speaker 3 (34:38):
So what does it.
Speaker 10 (34:39):
Mean when traditions unite, When a beacon of hope meets
a source of pride, When you combine a place that's
full of life with people who can save a life.
We call it a victory for our valley, for our kids,
for generations to come. Valley Children's official healthcare partner of
the Fresno State Bulldogs.
Speaker 11 (35:00):
Some days you hit snooze, but not today. Today you
have to go on a run to get burgers for
the tail game. You've got to haul something heavy, a
cooler stocked with bud Light, and you've got beer and football.
Speaker 8 (35:15):
Nothing that's hard.
Speaker 1 (35:17):
Until the other team scores.
Speaker 11 (35:19):
Bud Light Easy to drink, easy to enjoy, Enjoy responsibly
twenty one plus copy right twenty twenty four Endheuser, Bush,
bud Light, Beer, Saint Louis, Missouri.
Speaker 3 (35:31):
Now Here comes Keen in motion shotgun.
Speaker 15 (35:33):
Snap Wood runs the option and fakes the Aggies out
of their shoes. Took a step to us right, fake
the pitch, then went straight ahead. Second rushing touchdown tonight
for the sophomore Joshua.
Speaker 3 (35:47):
What would woo? Baby?
Speaker 1 (35:49):
That's a weapon right there. Short yardage weapon, goal line weapon.
Speaker 12 (35:53):
It's so hard to defend a quarterback who doesn't just
move like him, but is built like him.
Speaker 3 (35:59):
He is a big.
Speaker 1 (36:00):
Quarterback who can move really, really well.
Speaker 12 (36:03):
Love this short yardage goal line package that Pat mccannon
has put in a lot tonight.
Speaker 3 (36:10):
That was another high point from Saturday's forty eight nothing
Bulldog victory over New Mexico State. This week, the Bulldogs
go to Albuquerque to battle the New Mexico Lobo. Again
to coach Tim Skipper for coming out to the airport
to do the Bulldog Football Hour tonight. Next week, we'll
be back out at the point on the northwest corner
of Willow and Knees. We're brought to you tonight by
thirty two Below Ice, the official ice provider of Fresno
(36:32):
State Athletics, and by Bulldog Bread, the official nil collective
of Fresno State Athletics. To support student athletes. Visit Bulldog
Bread our ead dot com boy talking about ice and bread.
Getting a little hungry and for those of you are
here at the airport, Starbucks is open you can go
grab something from them. And also, I don't know if
(36:52):
you know this, but at the airport they do have
food trucks that show up a little later on. So
right after the veterans march through, there will be a
food truck out on the curb. Martin's Grill is going
to be here with the Chila chiles and flatas and
cheeseburgers and petas. It's even National Cheeseburger to night tonight.
I understand they have a Sada Fries, so that'll be
(37:13):
open at eight thirty on the curb here at the airport,
So if you're coming to the airport, plan on eating
afterwards right outside, and you might see some more veterans
walking through. One of the cool things every time is
we have a chance not just to salute the sixty
seven veterans who are on this flight, and they range
in age from sixty seven to ninety five. They represent
every branch of our armed forces. We've got Korean War
(37:36):
veterans on that plane, Vietnam veterans, guys who served in
the Cold War. But we have men and women serving
our country today who a lot of times we go
about our daily lives and we have no idea what
they're doing for the rest of us. So now's a
chance for us to find out about that a little bit.
Because every flight we've done, all twenty nine of them,
even the two that took off from Castle Air Force
(37:57):
Base in Merced, we've had sailors from nas More there
to welcome our veterans home. And we've got a young
man with us right now, Yeoman first class Israel Vasques.
How long you've been in the Navy?
Speaker 16 (38:09):
Eleven and a half years, could be twelve years in January.
Speaker 3 (38:13):
So you started when you're like twelve something like that.
We'll say that what was your motivation for joining the Navy?
Speaker 16 (38:20):
Well, my motivation was initially to start a career for
myself from a third generation Navy. My grandfather was in
the Navy. My stepdad was in the Navy, and he
was the one that pushed me to join, and it's
been the best decision that I could have possibly made
in my life.
Speaker 3 (38:34):
Did they tell you any of their stories from their
time in the Navy? Oh?
Speaker 7 (38:37):
Absolutely, yeah.
Speaker 16 (38:38):
My grandfather was a Korean War veteran, so he got
to do a lot of the cool stuff. My stepdad,
he was during the First golf war, so uh huh,
not as cool, but you know he served his time.
He served four years and my grandfather served I believe
eight years outstanding.
Speaker 3 (38:57):
And so you've been in eleven and a half years.
Maybe you do a few things today that you didn't
do when you first started. But can you give us
a taste of what your duties are there at nas Lamore.
Speaker 16 (39:06):
So I'm the administrative supervisor at Base Admin in n
as Lamore. So basically all of the instructions, correspondence, legal matters,
that's what we take care of.
Speaker 3 (39:17):
Their How long you've been stationed here in the valley.
Speaker 16 (39:19):
I just got back here, So this is my second
time coming in to the valley. My daughter is here
in my cellia as well from my previous time here.
But I was stationed in Bahrain for two and a
half years and I just got back here in May.
Speaker 3 (39:33):
Wow, I'm just going to go out on a limb
and say, there are a few things you appreciate about
being back here compared to two and a half years
in Bahrain.
Speaker 16 (39:43):
Yes, yes, two and a half years in Bahrain.
Speaker 3 (39:45):
Can you give us a taste of some of those differences,
because anybody else in the room ever been to Bahrain.
Anybody lived there for two and a half years, he's been.
I see one out there. I saw one hand go up.
There's another one another one of your sailors. What it's
the hottest temperature you got over there, So.
Speaker 16 (40:02):
It's the heat in decks that you have to worry about.
With the humidity, the heat in decks gets up to
one twenty one twenty.
Speaker 3 (40:08):
That's no big deal, not a big.
Speaker 16 (40:09):
Deal for the Central Valley.
Speaker 7 (40:11):
I mean, we're used to it over here.
Speaker 3 (40:12):
But that is one hundred and twenty is pretty hot.
And I'm sure there are other things that you notice
that maybe you figure out things here in America that
you took for granted when you're living over there a
little bit a little bit.
Speaker 16 (40:26):
Life moves so fast over here, and it seems over
there in the Middle East everything's kind of slowed down.
So that's actually one of the things that I took away.
Get a little bit more time to kind of reflect
and wake up and smell the coffee over there a
little bit more.
Speaker 3 (40:42):
How is the coffee over there?
Speaker 16 (40:43):
Arabic coffee is actually really good. There's more caffeine. Internet surprised, huh, yeah,
Arabic coffee is really good. So yeah, Arabic food, I'm
actually kind of missing it. But when I was there,
I missed Mexican food and burritos and a surprise, all
the good stuff.
Speaker 3 (40:58):
Well, I was talking about that food that's going to
be here at the airport tonight, Martin's grill. Not only
do they have the Asada fries, but maybe they can
scratch that Mediterranean itch for you because they do have
chicken peda as well.
Speaker 16 (41:09):
Oh that sounds good soon with garlic sauce. And my
wife's Filipino. I met her there in in Bahrain when
I was stationed there, so she's still over there, so
I'm kind of over here in the Central Valley.
Speaker 3 (41:19):
There's a lot of.
Speaker 16 (41:20):
Filipino food here too, so thankfully a little bit of
a little bit of home.
Speaker 3 (41:24):
I was just talking about that with one of the
veterans who's on this plane right now, John Gago, who
earlier today got to leya wreath at the tomb of
the unknown soldier Wow twice wounded in Vietnam, fortunate to
be alive. But his father came here from the Philippines
in the twenties, then fought in World War Two for America.
That's against Japan. Who was you know, occupying Philippines at
(41:47):
the time. I don't want to get on a tangent
talking Filipino food, but the philip bake Shop and Delano
as my go to. You ever been at that?
Speaker 16 (41:54):
I've never been there.
Speaker 3 (41:54):
I need to go Cecil Avenue exit, west side of
the freeway, right next to the AMP.
Speaker 16 (41:58):
I heard there's a Jolly be there too in Delano?
Speaker 3 (42:01):
Is that right? So wow? All right, Well, let's talk
a little more about the Navy. What's something and again
we're talking to Israel Vasquez, Yeoman first Class here from
nas Lamore to welcome home our veterans tonight. Is there
something that you think most of us civilians misunderstand or
maybe don't quite get about what active duty service in
(42:22):
the Navy is.
Speaker 16 (42:22):
Like, I think a lot of civilians seem that we're
constantly always in combat, that we're always on the front
lines doing something crazy, when a lot of us are
behind the scenes doing all the technical stuff and doing
all the administrative and it things things like that. There's
a lot of jobs out there that require pretty much
(42:43):
the full range in the military to be fully functioning.
Speaker 3 (42:48):
And I mean you just alluded to something. That's another
big difference I think for most of us. You said,
your wife is still in Bahrain?
Speaker 16 (42:53):
Still there?
Speaker 3 (42:54):
How much longer till she gets to come home?
Speaker 16 (42:56):
So she has a visa interview actually next week? Oh
hopefully after that interview a couple more months.
Speaker 3 (43:04):
So are you saying you met your wife on a deployment?
Speaker 16 (43:06):
I met her there when I was in Bahrain the
first month that I was there.
Speaker 3 (43:10):
So because of the Navy, you met your wife. Absolutely,
I mean that's kind of a good headline. Is absolutely,
I love it. Have you been to one of these before?
This is my first time coming, first time? First time?
What have you heard from your fellow sailors about why
it was important to be here tonight?
Speaker 16 (43:26):
I hear it's an emotional experience. I'm a softy and
I know that seeing these veterans come by not getting
that proper send off when they were in war, A
lot of them during Vietnam whar it was very contentious times.
It's going to be an experience. It's going to be
a very humbly experience.
Speaker 3 (43:45):
Well, I can tell you from talking to so many
of these veterans, and come next month we'll cross the
two thousand mark, where the valley has made it possible
for two thousand veterans to go visit their memorials. You
guys are one of the last things they see before
they hit this crowd, and it means so much to
them that you are standing there at attention, saluting them.
So thank you for stepping up for this duty tonight.
(44:06):
Thank you for serving our country. And hope your wife
gets to come home to you.
Speaker 16 (44:10):
So yes, sir, thank you so much. It's a real
honor to be.
Speaker 3 (44:13):
Here while we're honored to have you. How about a
hand for Yeoman first Class Israel Vasquez from nas Lamore
and we'll be back from the Fresno Airport. If you're
not here yet, hurry on up. Eight o'clock is when
the honor fly to land. They'll be marching through at
eight thirty. Got that, Brad? All right? We'll be back
from the airport right after this on the Bulldog Sports
Network from their field.
Speaker 8 (44:33):
Here in the heart of California.
Speaker 10 (44:35):
Traditions are as deeply rooted as the abundant fields that
drape Bar Valley. They link us across generations. They make
us who we are. So what does it mean when
traditions unite. When a beacon of hope beats a source
of pride. When you combine a place that's full of
life with people who can save a life, we call
it a victory for our valley, for our kids, for

Hey, this is coach Pat Hill here on behalf of
my friends at American Fistachio Gors. It is my favorite
time of the year because Bulldog football is back. This
also means that California pistasher goers are working hard to
harvest my favorite healthy and delicious nut. Just like building
a winning team on the football field, American pistaso Goers
has the dedication and commitment to excellence you need to
protect your investment now and into the future. So this
(47:25):
harvest joined me in over eight hundred of my friends

Speaker 3 (47:38):
Welcome back, Welcome back to the Bulldog Football Hour. We're
coming your way from the Fresno Yosemite International Airport tonight
and we're a little more than an hour away from
a plane full of sixty seven Valley veterans touching down
here at the airport. In fact, when I do get
to say touchdown, Central Valley Honor Flight instead of touchdown
(47:59):
bulldo some of you may be able to look out
that window behind the band and see a water cannon salute.
That plane is going to be drenched with water from
a couple fire cannons, one of the special little touches,
a couple other special things. The Clovist Community Band is here.
They've already played a little bit. We'll let you hear
him on the radio after our next commercial break, which
we're running out of time. It's already about ten to seven.
(48:22):
I've got two very special gentlemen who have joined me now.
Though we heard from Tim Skipper, he gave out some
bulldog tickets to the crowd here at the airport. We
just heard from Yeoman first Class Israel Vasquez, who's one
of a couple dozen sailors from anys La Moore who
were here tonight as well. Do I see some marines
over there too? All right? I was waiting for someone
(48:42):
to give me the hourrah there. And I'm joined now
by two of my favorite veterans. One's a few years
older than the other. We have Scott Phillips, who has
been one of our MVPs in our all Volunteer Central
Valley Honor Flight Organization. And Scott, are you as amazed
as I am by the other gentleman sitting here, Vern Schmidt.
Speaker 17 (49:03):
Yes, Vern is just unbelievable when it comes to representing
the veteran community, which I'm a member of. Just every
time I hear him speak, it's just inspirational. It's just
a wonderful gentleman. And he really is a role model
for our kids. I taught high school after I got
(49:24):
out of the military, and I tell you it's wonderful
to have gentlemen like him representing us.
Speaker 3 (49:30):
Hey, Vern, tell us how young you are. I'll be uh, I'll.
Speaker 18 (49:36):
Be ninety nine in January.
Speaker 3 (49:40):
Did you guys all hear that? Ninety nine in January?
Another goofy question for you, where are you going to
be hanging out on Saturday November two? With you at
Valley Children Stadium for Fresno State against WHII. You're at
Fresno State with you. So if you guys come to
(50:01):
a Bulldog football game, the Bulldogs do a lot of
things that make the fans cheer, but the loudest cheer
every game is when the hero of the game is introduced.
So if you come on November two, when the Bulldog's
host Hawaii, you're gonna get to cheer for Verne Schmidt,
who by then will be two months closer to ninety nine.
Vern it's been a decade since you went on the
(50:22):
honor flay.
Speaker 18 (50:23):
Yeah, we went out of Versin at the airbase.
Speaker 3 (50:27):
What was your favorite part of that experience? I'm sorry,
what was your favorite part of the whole honor flight experience?
What made the biggest impression on you? Well?
Speaker 18 (50:37):
I had been to DC a number of times, and
of course there we were again. But you know, I
think the camaraderie on the airplane was a real neat deal.
So don't you know how to wear these things?
Speaker 3 (50:55):
Do I?
Speaker 18 (50:58):
I would say when we got all the plane at
Merced when we came back, the reception we got from
the people up there was on a sight. They just
one guy hollered at me. He's a fellow I used
to call on way on the West Side when I
worked out there, and he was there. It was just
a it was a neial It was different than this one.
(51:23):
I mean, they're both great, but that was kind of
a little more personal because of the size of the crowd, you.
Speaker 3 (51:30):
Know, well, and there there wasn't a terminal to come through,
so you walked right off the plane and they were
on top of you.
Speaker 5 (51:36):
Here.
Speaker 3 (51:36):
We build up the suspense a little bit, as you
know full well, because you're here every time. The veterans
are coming back to salute your fellow veterans. And you're
not the only one here. I see a bunch of
red shirts and red hats over there. I see mister
Trask who served in Korea. We've got a lot of
other vets who are here to welcome home their fellow
veterans here tonight. And I guess that's my other question
(51:58):
for you, Verne, before we take a quick break, because
I know we have to get one more in here.
Why do you come back? Why are you here tonight?
Speaker 18 (52:06):
Why am I here tonight?
Speaker 3 (52:07):
Yeah?
Speaker 18 (52:08):
You know, like I said when I landed there, merce said,
the reception received, we weren't expecting anything but just get
off the plane, get in the car, and go home.
These a lot of these guys coming through that right
there tonight are probably thinking of the very same thing.
I'm gonna find my car and go home, or that
(52:28):
my wife or brother or sister, whoever reception they receive here.
Because of what you guys have put together over the years,
I just feel I like to be a partner just
to watch it.
Speaker 3 (52:41):
Well, it wouldn't be the same without you here. So
thanks for being here again tonight, and we can't wait
to cheer for you on November second. Scott, You're gonna
be there to cheer for vernon on November second. I
wouldn't miss it.
Speaker 17 (52:52):
I have my seats already.
Speaker 3 (52:54):
I thought you did. Hey, we'll come back with just
a few more minutes here from the airport, but you've
got an hour to get here. The flight will touchdown
at eight o'clock. If you're not here yet, come join
us and keep it here on the Bulldog Sports Network.

(56:48):
is the Clovis Community Band here at the Fresno Yosemite
International Airport. They're going to be playing for our veterans
once they land and march through and again that plane
is going to be on the ground about one hour
from now. We'll say touch down Central Valley, Honor Flight
