Speaker 1 (00:01):
On the Bulldog Sports Network from Deerfield. This is the
Bulldog Football Hour, presented by American pistachio growers, powering the
Valley one nut at a time. Also brought to you
by Table Mountain Casino Resorts, Lucky Days and Epic Nights,
and by Pepsi, official soft drink of Fresno State Athletics.

(00:23):
Now live from the Point Pettio barring Pistro, here's your host,
the Voice of the Bulldogs, Paul Leffler.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Hey, Hey, welcome back to the Point Patio Bar and Bistro.
Beautiful evening here on the patio, great crowd. There are
a few seats left if you want to sneak over
here over the next hour. We're gonna be here till
seven o'clock. And today is a very special day, of
course in our country, and we want to start right there.
I want to wish you all a meaningful Patriots Day.

(00:54):
And it was twenty three years ago today that the
world changed in such a powerful way. And we're going
to start there before we get all round. And there
was plenty to be rowdy about Saturday night at Valley
Children's Stadium, wasn't there forty six Bulldog points on the scoreboard,
the first time that Coach Skipper got to coach in
Valley Children Stadium, and so many memories and maybe we'll
hear some of those back tonight as we progress over

(01:15):
the next hour. Coach Skipper's here right now, a young
man who had a special moment on Saturday night, got
his first career interception. Cam Broca is going to join
us before we're done, So if you have any questions
for Coach Skip or for cam Broca, you can send
them our way on the x app. Use that hashtag
ask fs. We've got a lot to talk about the
Sack State game, the game ahead against New Mexico State,

(01:35):
but let's start with September eleventh, two thousand and one,
because we realize the perspective we need to have there
and this is one that is so close to the
Bulldog family. All the years Coach Tedford was here, you know,
I can remember how emotional he would get talking about
his old teammate Otis Tolbert, who was killed in the
Pentagon on September eleventh of two thousand and one. Otis

(01:55):
played defense and offense during his time at Fresno State,
and we'd never want to forget his sacrifice for our country.
And if you've never been before, go over to the
California nine to eleven Memorial in Clovis. Look for his
name on that miniature version of the Pentagon and read
all the other names and take a moment to remember
the lives lost twenty three years ago. Today, and Coach Skip,
I've got to ask you, because everybody remembers that day

(02:18):
and where they were. You had just finished your bulldog
playing career the season before. Where were you on September eleventh,
two thousand and one? You remember?

Speaker 3 (02:27):
So in May of that year, I graduated, walked across
the stage, got my diploma, and then I was going
to help out Coach Hill and not necessarily be a GA,
would be.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
A student assistant.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Then in July I got a call that I could
be a dB coach D two Western New Mexico University.
Asked Coach Hill, asked Coach Brown at the time was
my position coach, and they all said you need to
take that job. So in August I packed up my
vehicle and I drove to New Mexico.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
And then a.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
Month later, nine to eleven happened, And you talk about me,
I was twenty two years old, kind of going into
a new phase of my life, and then that tragic
day happened kind of changed me because it made me
realize not to take things for granted. And I was
a first year coach and I was grinding, I had
to chalk the field, I was the equipment man. I

(03:16):
coached with a Fannie pack, Like my whole life was
different from being a Bulldog football player. And it made
me appreciate where I was at, Appreciate that I had
a job, appreciate just life in general, and just still
appreciative from that day on.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
It's really molded me.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
And shaped me as far as the appreciation side of
me for everything I do and the people that I know.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
So that's the first thing that comes to mind when
I think of nine to eleven. You know, I'm really
appreciative that you shared that perspective, because that's what it's
all about. It just reminds us that every day is
a gift, and there were those that didn't have any
more days gifted to them after that. And not only
was Otis Fencent Tolbert one of our Bulldog football alumps.
So there was a young man who had come to
Fresno State, wanting to play baseball for coach Bennett never

(03:59):
made the team, but that was what brought him to
Fresno State. And of course Todd Beamer, everyone knows his
story and that famous quote of Let's roll twenty three
years ago today on September eleventh, two thousand and one.
The other thing from a football perspective, we remember Coach
Skipp is you're following a bunch of year old teammates
and Fresno State was on top of the world as
followers college football. Before that day, the Dogs had beaten Colorado,

(04:21):
they'd throttled Oregon, stayed at home in front of the
biggest crowd in Bulldog history. They went to Wisconsin and
knocked off the Badgers. They were on the cover of
Sports Illustrated, and then nine to eleven happens. They had
to postpone that next game, and that just changed a
lot of things for a lot of people. And we're
not saying that that football season would have been different
or was more important, but it was the timing of everything.

(04:42):
You go back and you remember and so much our
lives were changed that day. Life hasn't been the same
ever since, but it is a special time to be
around the Bulldog program right now. We just wanted to
take some time to remember September eleventh, two thousand and one.
I'm sure everybody here is thinking about where they were
that day. And this week is going to be a

(05:02):
special night at the stadium. It's Heroes Night on Saturday Night.
So there will be moments throughout the game where you,
as the Red Wave, have chances to stand and cheer
for our men and women in uniform, those who are
in the Armed forces, those who are first responders in
law enforcement. There will be heroes celebrated all night long,
and we want to honor some heroes here tonight. So
here's the deal. If you come to the Point Patio

(05:23):
Bar and Bistro tonight, if you find us out here
on the patio and you have ever served in our
Armed forces or you're a first responder, we've got some
free tickets to Saturday night's game for you. So if
there are any veterans in the house right now, why
don't you raise your hand right now. If you're a veteran,
all right, our guy Tray over there is going to
get your information and you're going to get some free
tickets to Saturday night's game, and I'm holding right here

(05:45):
four red seats and a parking path, some of the
best seats in the house, and one very special winner
is going to take those home tonight. So if you're
out there listening, you're driving around, find your way to
the northwest corner of Willow and Knees. You can eat
something great at the Point. And if you're a first
responder currently in the Armed forces or ever have, we're
gonna have some free tickets for you for that Saturday
night seven point thirty kick against the Aggies of New

(06:06):
Mexico State. And Coach Skip, you said something there, Western
New Mexico. I'm wondering if anybody out here on the
patio the Point Patio Bar and Bistro knows where Western
New Mexico is, because the Bulldogs are playing the Aggies
of New Mexico State from Los Cruises Saturday night. The
next Saturday they're gonna be in Albuquerque playing the Lobos.
Who knows where Western New Mexico is. We might have

(06:27):
some free tickets for you if you can figure it out,
You're gonna tell them.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
Coach Skip, nobody knows it's in Silver City, New Mexico
in a mountain has four true seasons to it.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
You're gonna get snowing, you're gonna get sun, You're gonna
get all of it. So it's in the middle of nowhere.
And that's how you explain it. A special place with
a lot of history. And does anyone know the mascot
of Western New Mexico here tonight? All right? Tell them
skip Mustangs, Glad I remembered. So you got the Mustangs
in Silver City, you got the Aggies in Los Cruses,

(06:59):
the Lobos in Albuquerque, and the Bulldogs aren't playing the
Mustangs this year, but they've got the Aggies and the
Lobos and back to back weeks. And before we talk
about your opponent and a very familiar head coach with
New Mexico State, let's talk about Saturday night, because you know,
we talked about the anticipation and what it was gonna
feel like for you. Did it meet your expectations? Coach?

(07:21):
As far as the game day experience leading the Bulldogs
into battle at Valley Children Stadium, definitely. It all started
pregame warmups.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
We had the band out there and they played a
couple of little songs for us, and they were on
the field, so that brought back some good vibes.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
And then walking down the ramp, you know, going.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
Through the red Mile and then actually getting down the
ramp and knowing it's kickoff for a game. We're not
going to Matt drill practice or some conditioning drills or anything.
It's the real deal. So that that felt awesome. Hear
the crowd watch the team run out there. I told
myself I was gonna run, but I didn't run. I
went straight to the sideline, left that to the kids.
And we started out with a bang too, So it

(07:58):
was it was a great, amorable experience, one I'll never forget.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
You did start out on a bang. And if anybody
was listening to our pregame show the other night, you
heard Pat Hill breaking down the matchup, saying that the
secondary of sack State might have been a liability and
he thought the Bulldogs were gonna go bombs away. And
then the first play bombs away, seventy five yard touchdown
passed from mikey Keen to Macdalena. So is that why
you were telling everybody last week to get in their

(08:23):
seats early because you knew that was coming and you
just couldn't tell us a.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
Little bit a little bit, and Coachill had some inside
information too, so I don't think he didn't.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
But we definitely were going to be on an attack.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
We felt like we could have done a little bit
more in the Michigan game, and so we came out
right away and we were gonna go throw that thing deep,
whether it was complete or incomplete, we were sending a
message and they kind of busted the coverage and it
was wide open and macdalena caught it and we scored.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
And then the.

Speaker 3 (08:51):
Extra special secret was we gotten a little migration on
the extra point and we got the look we wanted
and Manda took the snap and he went right in.
So it was a the eight points and two snaps,
it sure was.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
And I don't think sax State knew what hit him
at that point ten seconds it was eight nothing. And
that was the first time Jayden Mandle got to touch
a football in a Bulldog game. And he ran right
into the end zone and his pops is right over
there toasting of that right now. All right, congrats, so
nice classing. In fact, we saw three Bulldog quarterbacks get
in the game Saturday night. We're gonna talk about that,

(09:24):
But as far as your overall takeaway, coach, I know
you were happy to win. I know you were glad
to see forty six points on the board. Maybe you
could have had a few more points that night. But
I also know you're never satisfied. So what's the biggest thing,
the biggest area where you want to see improvement from
last Saturday night to this coming Saturday. Yeah, just keep consistency.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
We started out fast. I think it was twenty five
to three At a certain point. It was the longest
first half ever. There was eleven possessions in one half,
and then it kind of got a roll. Even the
stadium got quiet, the players asideline got quiet, everything got
quiet because it was like, oh, we're gonna win the game,
and then they started creeping back in there. So the
anything is consistency and then just score as many points

(10:03):
as we can. And then on defense we have to
constantly get stops, which you saw there towards the end.
We had some guys playing that usually don't play amongst
each other, and we blew a couple of little defensive
assignments and they took advantage of it and scored some points.
So good learning experience. But consistency is a magic word
right now. We just need to play consistent four quarters
no matter.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
What the score is, and that's what we'll be looking
for Saturday night against New Mexico State. We'll talk more
about that when we come back. Come join us at
the Point Patio Bar and Bistro. Fantastic food on the menu.
I think I just saw some chips and saucer coming out.
Anybody having the pad tie tonight, that's fantastic. The short
rib tacos, the steak bites. Man, I'm getting hungry talking
about it. Whatever you want to drink too. They'll even

(10:44):
throw a couple of lines in your water if you
ask them like I did.

Speaker 4 (10:46):
So.

Speaker 2 (10:46):
Come join us at the Point Patio Bar and Bistro.
And if you're someone who's ever served in our armed
forces or you're a first responder, we've got free tickets
for you. All you have to do is come say hello,
Come meet the coach and safety Cambroco who's coming up
later here till seven o'clock. The Bulldog Football Hour are

motion play action for mikey Keane with Time taking a
deep shot wide open as Macdalena slows down to catch
it at the thirty five. Now the race is on,
heading for that north end zone touchdown Fresno State bombs away,
indeed seventy five yards on the.

Speaker 9 (14:23):
First play from scrimmage.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
How's that for a way to open the home schedule?

Speaker 12 (14:27):
Pat?

Speaker 2 (14:29):
Yeah? Pat? Where'd you go? Pat? Well, you'll hear more
from Pat Hill Saturday night, seven thirty kick against New
Mexico State. And for the huge crowd we have here
on the patio of the Point Patio Barnbistro, I just
want to show a hands how many of you were
in your seats by the time that touchdown scored? Anybody
miss it because you weren't inside the stadium yet don't
want to admit it. Well, that's why you got to

(14:50):
be in there early. How early do you think they
need to be skip? Just thirty minutes, that's all. Yeah,
thirty minutes before kick, thirty minutes. So Saturday night it's
a seven thirty kicking, it's New Mexico State, So be
in the stadium at seven o'clock and you will not
miss the first Bulldog touchdown. Even if they score on
the opening kick on a Saturday night against New Mexico State,

(15:10):
the Bulldog's one and one and they start conference play
a week from Saturday in Albuquerque. So this is the
last tune up before Mountain West play begins and a
big home game Saturday night, seven thirty. Remember, Fresno State
led the nation last year in attendance outside of the
Power Four conferences, so it's an opportunity to go back
to back in that department. It was a sellout last Saturday,

(15:31):
forty one thousand strong. Still some work to do to
sell it out this Saturday. If you don't have your
tickets yet, go Bulldogs dot com. Thanks to everybody who
donated to provide tickets for heroes in our community. It
is Heroes Night Saturday night, and again, if you're a veteran,
if you're serving now, if you're a first responder and
you're here tonight, if you find your way to the
patio here on the northwest corner of Willow and Knees

(15:51):
at the point Patio Barnbistro, we'll give you free tickets
to Saturday night's game against New Mexico State. If that
fits you and you're here already, grab a little piece
of paper on the table there, write your email down
and we'll send those tickets to you digitally. All right, coach,
let's get a practice update. Presented by Pepsi, the official
soft drink of Fresno State Athletics. Once the season gets going,

(16:12):
some guys are playing banged up, some guys aren't playing yet.
Some guys have to wait a few weeks. And it
was good to see number five in practice this week.
Josiah Freeman a very talented wide out. How would you
explain the health situation right now? On how things are
looking for Saturday night?

Speaker 3 (16:30):
Roster wise, we're about where you'd be after two games
to start a season'd be good to get Josiah back.
He's practiced both days Tuesday and Wednesday today and look good,
so I think as long as he keeps progressing in
a positive way, we'll be fine. And then on the lines,
we got cal McCart and Ezra Christensen. They both went
down in the game, didn't practice today. We'll see how

(16:52):
they look tomorrow and then we'll just keep on looking
at it. But hopefully we get those guys back, because
the positions you don't want to lose are lineman. Lineman
are huge, so hopefully we can get those guys back.
It's hard to replace size.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
Yeah, and you're still waiting on a couple of talented
linemen that we haven't seen yet this year in Jacob
Spoemer and Edward Fonua. And I remember talking to coach
Tedford at Mountain West media days right before you know,
the whole handoff happened, and he was talking about the
O line and saying how excited he was about the
depth on the offensive line this year. And when Campbell
went down, at least you had the luxury of going
to a six year senior and Daniel Tomololo to plug

(17:26):
that gap for a while definitely.

Speaker 3 (17:27):
And he was ready to go. I mean, he went
right in there. So we do have that luxury. We
have a lot of experience. The guys are older guys,
so that's a blessing. But we want all of them
to be healthy and we'll just keep on knocking on
Wood and hoping it happens.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
And speaking of depth, and would actually Joshua Wood is
one of your quarterbacks, so is Jaden Mandal, and you've
got a lot more depth at that position now than
you had a couple of weeks ago, because going into
the season, Mikey Keane was the only one who'd ever
taken a snap in college. And we saw Jaden score
on that two point conversion. Then we saw Joshua would
run in a touchdown with a physical finish to that run.

(18:04):
And Savannah, who's your media relations hancho over here? She
talked to everybody around the country to see how often
does that happen where three quarterbacks account for points for
one team in the same game, And until last weekend
it hadn't happened since twenty seventeen. Really God, but the
same night you did at Stanford did it? They had
three different quarterbacks produced touchdowns. Lucky night, did I guess?

Speaker 12 (18:26):
Huh?

Speaker 2 (18:27):
And in a few years Stafford's coming to Valley Children Stadium.
That's going to be fun when that happens. All kinds
of coincidences. So I want to ask you about that.
With that quarterback situation, you know, you have three guys
that obviously want to play. You have an established starter
at a preseason All Mountain West pick and Mikey Keane.
But already you've given the other two a taste of
the action. Do you and your staff and your coordinator

(18:48):
Pat McCann, your quarterback coach Matt Wade, have like a
feel for how much work you want to get those
guys in for and how you feel out those situations
in a game where hey it's Joshua time, Hey it's
Jaden time. Definitely, it's prescribed.

Speaker 3 (19:04):
We have three good quarterbacks, luxury, blessing, all those words,
and we want to play them all.

Speaker 2 (19:09):
And that was just the start of it.

Speaker 3 (19:11):
We're going to keep on building on it and keep
on building and keep on building, and depending on the
defense we're playing against, we'll decide how we're going to
attack it. But expect to see all three. That's how
I see it. Expect to see all three and we're
going to keep on building on it. And I don't
want to give away too many secrets, but expect to
see all three.

Speaker 2 (19:30):
Well, what's been fun about the plays where Joshua Wood
has gone in at quarterback? And you've been pretty good
about sneaking them in there too. Like a couple of
times I did a double take. I said, wait a second,
what's Number one doing way out wide? Because you're starting
quarterbacks still in the game when Joshua's out there, So
I mean, I'm just thinking that the opposing d has
to be ready for Mikey Keane to be a receiver
and maybe catch a pass at some point.

Speaker 3 (19:51):
Always have to be ready, right, we have to keep
them guessing. So we have some tricks up our sleeve.
You'll see them. It'll it's going to be fun. And
if you go off the Michigan game, mandledn't holding that game.
And then he came out there on the first extra point,
and now teams are gonna be looking to see who
that holder is now.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
So now our extra point stuff can take on a
whole new level. So a lot of good things are happening.
If you are here at the Point Patio Bar and Bistro,
you can see the little twinkle in Coach Skipper's eyes.
I mean, this guy's been around football his whole life.
He's been dreaming up these scenarios. That's what I'm seeing here.
As you're talking to me, You're like, I finally get
to pull out this trick and this trick and keep
them guessing about this. I'm gonna have a linebacker score

(20:28):
a touchdown. I mean, yeah, do you have like a
drawer where you keep all the craziest plays that are
like only if we're really going well, am I gonna
dare to try something like this? The drawers right in
my head?

Speaker 6 (20:42):
You know?

Speaker 3 (20:42):
And we go to staff meetings, We're like, all right,
these guys are ballers. We need to figure out ways
to get them on the field. And with Mellow, was like,
he's a physical blocking dude. So his first play was
gonna be the block. But how the game, how to flow?

Speaker 2 (20:54):
The game went?

Speaker 3 (20:55):
The first play was catch a pass in the flat,
so it worked out to go the opposite way of
what we were thinking, but it.

Speaker 2 (21:00):
Worked, so it was all good. You know what I
love about a situation like that is that it shows
the trust and confidence. Because that was fourth down coach.
Oh yeah, he drops that ball. I mean people are saying,
what in the world are you doing? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (21:15):
Uh, supreme confidence and Mellow to start there, that's a dog.
I mean, he's a valley kid. He loves Fresno State.
He's all about it. He plays with his heart. So
had total confidence with him. Coached him as a linebacker coach,
so there was no setback. Oh, it was his first
play ever on offense and it's fourth down, and all
that never crossed my mind.

Speaker 2 (21:35):
The situation was there. He was ready like he always is.

Speaker 3 (21:38):
He was standing right next to the offense, right there.
The rest of the defense down the other end. He's
right there, and as soon as we called that personnel
group in, he went right in there, put me in, coach,
and caught it easy too.

Speaker 2 (21:49):
He didn't double clutch it.

Speaker 12 (21:51):
No, you're right.

Speaker 2 (21:51):
I mean his uncle was a pretty good tight end
back in the day at Presno State. Duncan reed. Not
a bad long snapper either.

Speaker 3 (21:57):
Absolutely, my teammate, Well, I want to talk to you
more about that play, not necessarily the play itself, but
what happened afterwards.

Speaker 2 (22:04):
We'll do that when we come back. We're with Coach
Tim Skipper here at the Point Patio Bar and Bistro
Cambroncas coming up a little bit later on. We're brought
to you tonight by the American Pistachio Growers, powering the
Valley one nut at a time. We thank the American
Pistachio Growers for their continued support of Fresno State Athletics
and for being the presented sponsor of our show tonight.

Speaker 12 (22:22):
Again.

Speaker 2 (22:22):
If you are a veteran, if you've ever served in
our armed forces, if you're a first responder, come join us.
We'll have some free bulldog tickets for you here till
seven o'clock at the Point Patio Bar and bistro on
the Bulldog Sports Network from their field.

Eight thirty one to go, first quarter eight to three,
Fresno State. The punt away looks returnable, low and over
and kick. Boss backs up to his fifteen, starts to
his right, finds a hole in the middle. Boss out

That was a pretty electric moment last Saturday night at
Valley Children's Stadium, Fresno State victorious Oversacks State forty six
to thirty. Now the Bulldogs hosts New Mexico State Saturday night,
seven thirty kick. If you don't have your tickets yet,

(26:27):
an epic night only at Table Mountain Casino Resort. Let's
get to that trip ahead, a short trip for the Bulldogs.
They just need to walk into the stadium because it's
a home game against New Mexico State. But every week
we bring you that trip ahead, brought to you by
Golden Eagle Charter, the preferred motor coach and executive transportation
service at Fresno State Athletics. By the way, if you're
looking to follow the Bulldogs on the road, they go
to Albuquerque next week. Vegas the week after that Vegas

(26:51):
game will be at Allegiance Stadium, a twelve thirty kick.
Last time the Dogs played there, they had more fans
than the Rebels. So let's see if the Red Wave
can do that again. And if you look for a
group to go with, I understand Tim Schiller has a
few more spots on his bus two two, five, thirty
one sixty four if you want to jump on with
those Bulldog fans. So, coach, let's talk about this matchup
with New Mexico State. Tony Sanchez, their head coach. Now

(27:15):
used to be your boss.

Speaker 3 (27:16):
Yeah, yeah, he is my boss. I've known him for
a long long time. This will be the first time
we've competed against each other like this, other than you know,
as both head coaches. Last year he was there also
for the bowl game, but he was the wide receiver coach.
So now it's face to face, let's go get it.
A very competitive guy. I know what he's preaching to
his team. They're gonna try to win in the trenches

(27:38):
and be tough and physical, the same stuff I'm saying.

Speaker 2 (27:40):
So it'll be fun and I'm excited about it. Really
good friend and New Mexico State is a physical team,
saw that against Liberty last week. They're pretty good at
running the ball so far, their passing game hasn't been
too great competing completing thirty six percent of their passes
and only one hundred and nine yards a game. And
another interesting deal is seeing a couple familiar faces wearing

(28:02):
the Aggie Crimson this week. Matt Lawson was on your
defense for a while and now he's a grad student
playing nose guard for them in the starting lineup. And
their kickers pretty good. Abe Montagno, former Bulldog, three for
three so far this year, including a fifty one yarder.
I guess in this era of the transfer portal, we're
going to be seeing those kind of situations more and more. Yeah,

(28:23):
it's gonna be kind of the norm now.

Speaker 3 (28:26):
Everybody ends up where they end up, and we see
each other say hello and then we move on.

Speaker 2 (28:30):
It's kind of what it is.

Speaker 1 (28:32):
You know.

Speaker 3 (28:33):
It seems like every single game there's been somebody that
was a former Dog or something. You know, So just
a new norm now and we have to accept it
and just keep on getting better throughout it.

Speaker 2 (28:45):
You know, we just heard that highlight of Jalen Moss
and that punt return and I want to come back
to that too, and that Tyler Mellow play because to me,
it's it's underscoring something that's happening with your team. And
this program had something happen before the season that doesn't
happen very often where a coach had to step down,
and coach Tedford obviously one of the most successful coaches
in school history, one of the most popular coaches. A

(29:06):
lot of these guys on this team came here because
Jeff Tedford was the head coach. He steps away, and
for a lot of programs, I think that would send
him into a tailspin, and we haven't seen that here.
We've seen guys band together. A big part of that
is you and your leadership and your relationship with him.
But when I see Jalen Moss returning a punt for
a touchdown just a couple minutes after he muffed a punt,

(29:29):
to me, that says the coaching staff has confidence in
a young man and wants him to get right back
on that horse. Was there any thought in your mind
of throwing another returner out there for the next one
just because it was so fresh for Jalen Nah.

Speaker 3 (29:40):
Not at all, Not at all, if you really look
at that play, we missed the block and so there
was a guy on him really really fast, so he
kind of double clustioning and got hit at the same
time and the ball came out.

Speaker 2 (29:50):
But never thought about that. It was will blocked.

Speaker 3 (29:53):
If he catches that first one, he's going to return
that one also, so we knew we had something there.
And then they kicked the same exact SA. We blocked
the guy and he was off to the races. I
don't really know if anybody even touched him, so it
was well blocked and he did a great job and
he's a great kid. And then the way the team
embraced him on the sidline, cause we all been there
where something happened and you feel a little embarrassed something

(30:14):
bad happened, and then to respond the way he did
was big time and the team showed him love for that.

Speaker 2 (30:18):
And he had a good game. I think he had
one hundred and seventy all.

Speaker 3 (30:21):
Purpose yards if you put it all together for the day,
so it was a good game.

Speaker 2 (30:25):
For him, not a bad day's work. Of course. Macdalanta
had two thirty five receiving on seven catches, could have
had a few more. Maybe you know one that hit
his hands, just keep him hungry. But you just talked
about how the sideline welcome Jalen Moss, and I want
to talk about the way the sideline welcome Tyler Mellow
after that touchdown, because here's a guy who's been in
the program forever, probably would have played more if not

(30:48):
for injuries, has kept working, has stayed focused, local guy
from Hanford High. And like you just described, you throw
him in there his first offensive play ever, fourth down,
he catches the touchdown, and then he comes to the sideline,
and I mean, I don't know how to describe that reception.
It's one of the most enthusiastic sideline receptions I've ever
seen in my life. You could just feel how excited

(31:10):
his teammates were for him, and that has to say
something about the culture you guys have. Definitely, I think
he's a team favorite. I think he's a fan favorite. Also.
He has a ton of family that comes all the games.

Speaker 3 (31:20):
But when you talk about people that work hard, he's
at the top of the list. Like the dudes works
hard in the weight room, all our conditioning, on the
field at practice.

Speaker 2 (31:29):
He knows one speed and that's full speed.

Speaker 3 (31:31):
So to see the excitement the team had for him
because they know how hard he has worked and it
paid off. I think that payoff is so tremendous, such
a gift, such a blessing, such a great feeling, and
when you actually experience it and feel it. I think
the whole team felt it with him, and it was
great to see how they love him and it's a
brotherhood and we're coming together.

Speaker 2 (31:51):
And I just have to ask, because he's a linebacker
who got to sneak in the offensive huddle and scored
a touchdown. In your years as a Bulldog line back,
I mean you were on the field a lot. Did
you ever try to talk the offense into letting you
go on that side of the ball. Never did, Never did.
I don't know if I would have caught that ball.

Speaker 3 (32:11):
I only had one interception in my career, so I
stayed on defense.

Speaker 2 (32:15):
That was against San Jose State.

Speaker 3 (32:16):
Wasn't that Yes, Yes, second to last game of my
career took that long?

Speaker 2 (32:20):
Uh huh. You just made people, you know, he built
some suspense. Spartans will be here next month, by the way,
on homecoming when Ron Cox's number goes up in the
ring of honor another chance for a sellout at Valley
Children's Stadium. We've got one of those chances Saturday night
against New Mexico State. Since we're on that topic, though,
I've just got to ask what was your dream, your
offensive fantasy as a linebacker at Fresno State that if

(32:44):
you ever did get to get in the game on
the offensive side of the ball, how you wanted to
have that look.

Speaker 3 (32:50):
I would have just wanted to hand off, break through
the D line linebackers, make a safety miss, and go
to the house. I think that feeling of running by
yourself would be awesome because most of my career around
all these people I'm getting over out of trash and
making plays and cut blocks and all that. But to
be in the open field and it's just me, I
think would have been a good feeling.

Speaker 2 (33:08):
But it never happened. She just really wanted to give
that safety to little Chimmy and break his ankles and
go past them, like break Cam's ankles and go score.
Speaking of Cam, one of your starting safeties, Cam Brock,
is going to join us in a minute, and before
we hit the commercial here, maybe I'll let you give
him a proper introduction. Why don't you give us a
taste of the first impression he made on you and

(33:31):
how much growth you've seen in him since then.

Speaker 3 (33:36):
So Cam walked on. Everybody was kind of like, who's
this guy. He's a fresleent city kid. And instantly the
first thing that I think hit me and hit his
teammates was that he could run.

Speaker 2 (33:48):
He could really run. He was really fast.

Speaker 3 (33:50):
It showed up when we started doing our matt drills,
and then when we practice, he's one of the fastest
guys out there. He's another one that knows only full speed.
He wouldn't tell you right now, but he's got some
little aches and bruises, but he doesn't want to stop practicing.
So we have to pull him off a little bit
and try to relax him a little bit. And game
day Saturday, not Tuesday, that type of thing. And he'll
hit you too.

Speaker 2 (34:10):
He'll hit you. That's the other thing.

Speaker 3 (34:12):
I don't know how many times you've hit the quarterbacks
from the side and the balls almost come out and
all that good stuff. So he can blitz, he can cover,
he can tackle, he can run, he could do it all.
So I'm very happy for him. I know he had
a long road to get to where he is now.
Deserves it all and you're gonna really love talking to
him and listening to him speak.

Speaker 2 (34:31):
Well, we can't wait to do that. We're gonna do
that with cam Broca in just a few minutes, Coach,
before we let you go hang out with the Red
Wave here at the Point Patti Obar and Bistro and

just gave me. Bring the juice, That's what I'll say.
Bring the juice.

Speaker 3 (34:52):
Just like I said earlier, be thirty minutes, but bring
that intensity, bring that excitement, bring the wave.

Speaker 2 (34:58):
You know what I'm talking about. Half fun.

Speaker 3 (35:00):
The temperature is gonna be a little bit cooler too,
so you're gonna be able to cheer a little bit
louder with el sweating and uh, have fun, enjoy it,

So that you walked by and those shrimp tacos were
just saying Cam, Cam.

Speaker 12 (40:32):
Yeah, definitely, definitely.

Speaker 2 (40:34):
Well, you know, it was kind of fun listening to
Cam Worel interview Cambrocca after the game Saturday night and
parallel pass for those two guys. They both played at
Fresno City, both came to Fresno State, both at one
point in their career. We're walk ons and became leaders
on the team. And Cammorel had to send out one
of his highlights, his big hits this week on a

(40:55):
text message. I think because he felt threatened that you might,
you know, supersede him as the number one cam in
the Bulldog secondary all the time. I want to hear
from you your earliest Bulldog memories because you're playing for
your hometown team in front of your family and friends.
Take us back a few years. What are some of
the earliest Fresno State football memories you have? Yeah, this
has been coming together for quite a while. It's pretty

(41:18):
fun to look at old pictures, for sure. Definitely smiling
ear to ear with the cheerleaders back in the day
on the White Lot, but just playing football with my
siblings in the White Lot and going to games, climbing
up those stairs. Never think I'd get to the top
when I was a little kid, but coming to watch
the Dogs was definitely a lot of fun. But I

(41:38):
grew up being a bulldog, and so now it's just
honor that I get to be out there and play
for him and represent my family. And when you were
coming out of high school, that opportunity wasn't initially there
was that still a dream that you held onto.

Speaker 20 (41:52):
No doubt, coming out of high school, I didn't know
if I wanted to keep playing football, if it was
still calling my name, just with the COVID year and
everything kind of shaking up, really know what it was
going to look like. But I had a lot of
buddies going to city, and so I thought what an
opportunity to be to keep to play with my high
school buddies. You know, that was just some years of
your life that are prime, and so I took that shot.
And it was never really in the picture. Didn't know

(42:14):
what it would look like, but with a lot of
hard work in the Lord's favor, it ended up working
out and we're able to make it happen, and so
it was pretty inspiring. I still remember during my city
day is going to those games and watching a lot
of the guys on the field that I'm now playing
with is pretty cool, and so looking up to those
guys and now sharing the stage with them.

Speaker 12 (42:33):
It's been an honor.

Speaker 2 (42:34):
And last year was your first year at a Bulldog uniform.
You played your way into the lineup. Coach Skipp was
just talking about, you know how, the impression you made
on him and some of the qualities that you have,
and he mentioned the hitting, and I mean that looks
like fun. What I've been impressed with is is guys
don't break your tackles, right. I mean, you don't let
guys go. There are some guys that they might hit you,

(42:55):
but they don't always wrap up. And I've always been
impressed how you've been able to be a sticky tackler.
But last year, nobody really knew your game right. And
Dean Clark came in last year too, you guys were
both new. How much different is it this year working
side by side with Dean in terms of familiarity, confidence,
timing compared to last year when you were both kind

(43:15):
of breaking into the program.

Speaker 20 (43:16):
No doubt we compliment each other pretty well. A lot
of people say whenever you see me, you see him,
and whenever you see Dean, you see Cam and so
it's pretty funny. We spent a lot of time together.
But we've really embraced what Coach Coyle has asked of us,
and he's done a great job training us into that position.
It's just a testament of the coach he is. But
coming in last year, we were fresh, just trying to
figure it out, maybe being a little hesitant, not knowing

(43:39):
exactly all the moving parts. But this year, with going
through the spring and winter and summer and just being
able to now let it loose, I think you're starting
to see that a lot these saturdays, and so we're
excited to continue to showcase that. But he's a heck
of a football player. I've got to spend a lot
of time with him in the offseason, like I said,
and so I've learned a lot from him. It's only

(44:00):
my fourth year. He's an older guy, and so even
though we've been in the program the same length, like
I still got a lot to learn from him. Along
with Cosey and even Jadeen Davis are guys who are
really smart and have been around longer than both of us,
and so I just try to be a sponge every
day to learn from those guys because those guys got
a lot of time around Coach Coyle.

Speaker 2 (44:21):
And those are both local young men too, Jaden Davis
from Bullard High and Cosey Agina from Sanger High. A
lot of valley representation in that Bulldog Secondary and Saturday
night it's New Mexico State, which is the challenge. The
Aggies are a little stronger in the run game than
the pass game. You ever catch yourself preparing for a
team like that and maybe you get too excited about

(44:41):
stopping the run and then you make a mistake and
get beat by a pass game that people didn't think
was a threat.

Speaker 20 (44:46):
Yeah, well, you know, we're just gonna go out there
and do our job.

Speaker 12 (44:49):
Cover guys are gonna cover.

Speaker 20 (44:50):
Run guys are gonna do their thing up front, and
so they're gonna come in with an attitude to definitely
beat us in the run. But we're gonna put the
right foot Ford and stop the run first, and so
that's something we've took him pride in. But they'll probably
throw a few trick plays in there. They got nothing
to lose coming in. They know the environment they're coming into.
It's gonna be hostile, it's gonna be a lot of fun,
and so but we're excited to put on the show.

(45:11):
And just do our job and represent Coach Coyle and
that defense staff.

Speaker 2 (45:16):
You know, you said, people say whenever they see you,
they see Dean and vice versa. I mean, what don't
you guys do together?

Speaker 12 (45:23):
I know, it's it's pretty funny.

Speaker 20 (45:24):
We' it's pretty funny because now our girlfriends are starting
to hang out, so now we're really in trouble. And
so but I tell him, I tell him I took
a lot of stress off his hands by putting my
girlfriend in his girlfriend's life.

Speaker 12 (45:36):
So now he's got a little easier at home.

Speaker 2 (45:39):
You know, Dean's got the curly dark hair and you've
got the blonde look. Next month is Halloween. If you
guys thought about doing the Bow and Luke Duf thing there.

Speaker 20 (45:49):
Maybe it will be in the process. Maybe we'll do
it on the March victory. We'll see what Coach Coyle says.

Speaker 2 (45:53):
I understand you were a pretty convincing Ken from Barbie
and Ken fame, though I.

Speaker 20 (45:58):
Take it as a good compliment, so yeah, I mean,
I don't know, it's kind of weird. I get it
from a lot of guys. I don't know what's that, Sam,
but it's Cam. They must wish they had something I had.
I don't know what it is.

Speaker 2 (46:12):
Well, there's something you have this year that you didn't
have last year, which is the number twenty two.

Speaker 12 (46:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (46:18):
Was that like a big deal to you to change numbers?

Speaker 12 (46:20):
No doubt. I wore it all through high school.

Speaker 20 (46:23):
It's my grandpa's birthday, who's in right here in the front,
and so that's a big reason why for sure. And
so it's just a special for me too for those
reasons and growing up in it, and so it brings
back a lot of memories. My younger brother wears it
as well, and so to get to wear that with
him is pretty cool as well.

Speaker 2 (46:41):
Well, there's some pretty good guys throughout Bulldog history have
won that number as well. And Cam Brock at the
latest in that club. We've got him here at the
point Patti O'bar and Bistro for another fifteen minutes. If
you want to come say hello, or if you want
to send in a question on the question on the xAPP,
use that hashtag ask fs one question. I haven't asked
you yet. We heard the moment at LEAs how it
sounded on the radio, but I haven't asked you what

(47:02):
it felt like because I'm sure you've envisioned getting your
first Fresno State interception a few times.

Speaker 20 (47:08):
Yeah, No, it was it was overdue, definitely. I was itching.
I was itching first Michigan. I thought I was going
to get it that game, and then I felt to
come this past week. We knew they were going to
air it out. They threw it. We were predicting forty times.
I think they did it more than that fifty. Yeah,
so I knew it was coming soon and I was
just waiting for my opportunity. But I was antsy for it,

(47:28):
and then when it happened, it was just all the blur.
It happened so fast, but I just was excited to
get to the sideline celebrate with my buddies. Tried to
hold onto the ball, maybe keep that a secret, but
they ended up getting back unfortunately.

Speaker 2 (47:42):
Oh you mean you tried to steal the ball. Yeah,
I want to say steal, but tried to make sure
it ended up with you after the game.

Speaker 12 (47:49):
In right hands.

Speaker 20 (47:50):
It wanted to be in my hands for a reason,
so I figured I'd take it home.

Speaker 2 (47:53):
Did anyone consider the ball's preference, right? I mean, anyone
asked the ball where it wanted to.

Speaker 12 (47:58):
Be Yeah, I'm sure, Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (48:02):
And you mentioned you couldn't wait to get to the sideline,
and that was so cool. I mean, our vantage point
there from the Bill Woodward radio booth were behind the
Bulldog sidelines, so we saw all these guys. They were
waiting for you to get there so they could smack
the heck out of your helmet and make you crazy.
What did that feel like for you when your teammates
mobbed on that sideline.

Speaker 12 (48:19):
No, it was pretty cool.

Speaker 20 (48:21):
I think I was first embraced by Ryan Wilson, who's
a guy we've worked hard together, coming kind of from
the same path we both walked on, and so he's
a guy we worked hard together in special teams and
even in the safety room, and he does a great job.
And so to see him, he's such a lit up
guy and brings a lot of ener June. So to
have him first, and then to get to the bench

(48:41):
and all the guys swarming, it was pretty awesome.

Speaker 2 (48:44):
And I've got to ask, because you said that first
pick was long overdue, are there a couple plays from
last year that you kind of watched back over the
offseason and said that should have been it? That should
have been my first pick.

Speaker 20 (48:55):
Yeah, there was a few late in the season for sure.
Even Week one, I thought there was a few opportunities.
We got a few plays in that coach Colespond us
in a good spot, and so I've been telling them
we're gonna get one and a few plays. I won't
share them, but you'll see it come soon.

Speaker 12 (49:12):
All right.

Speaker 2 (49:12):
Something to stay tuned for, something to be there early
for on Saturday night, seven thirty kick against New Mexico State.
Our pregame coverage starts at five thirty. And a cool
thing happening Saturday at the game. If you're over by
the soccer field right adjacent to Bulldog Boulevard, there's going
to be a Blackhawk helicopter that lands there from Mar
eleven h six kasm G here at the Fresno Airport.

(49:33):
They protect a big chunk of the West coast with
those helicopter crews, and there'll be two teams of current
servicemen and women playing a flag football game on the
soccer field, a forty five yard flag football course. Pat
and Cam and I are going to go up stand
on top of a military vehicle and provide some camentary
commentary that's now they've got Elijah Gilliam coming in, and

(49:57):
they've got Tyler Mello coming in. Tyler Mello, senior linebacker.
We'll get a lead play here full He's gonna play
a little lead blocker.

Speaker 15 (50:05):
Full one yard to go.

Speaker 6 (50:07):
It's still it's gonna be that or it's gonna be a.

Speaker 17 (50:10):
Play action twenty three personnel, two backs, three tight ends,
and they're throwing it.

Speaker 2 (50:15):
Yeah, Keane for the end Zoe.

Speaker 6 (50:17):
Tyler Mellow.

Speaker 17 (50:19):
Tyler Mellow, the former Hanford bullpep the first offensive snap
of his career. He's not blocking, he's catching touchdown fresh.

Speaker 2 (50:30):
No, stay, you love it.

Speaker 15 (50:32):
You have to be ready for lead right there, ball
inside the one yard line, a linebacker lined up in
full back. There's no way they're gonna throw the ball
to forty two. Excellent play action fake. Tyler Mellow slips
out of the backfield, runs a little flat route wide
open Mikey. Keane just drops it nice and easy to
Tyler Mellow scores his first touchdown as a Bulldog.

Speaker 12 (50:53):
That was awesome.

Speaker 6 (50:54):
What that that takes some waybos right, that's a good call.
That that's completely confuse you to the defense. Tyler Mellow,
that is a great job and a great call by
offensive coordinator.

Speaker 2 (51:08):
That was a special moment of Valley Children Stadium last
Saturday night. And in case you're wondering if you want
Huevos rancheros here at the Point Patio Barnbistro, you better
come to the Sunday brunch. I don't think it's on
the menu here tonight. Trimp tacos are That's what Cam
Brock is gonna enjoy. I see a lot of good
food on these tables out here, and a lot of
great bulldog fans, and we've just got a couple of
minutes left. Cam, I've got to ask you about that
moment though, to see one of your defensive buddies, whose

(51:31):
job is to hit people hard and make them fall,
actually get a chance to catch a ball, score a touchdown,
and then you, guys, I mean, I think you wanted
to run on the field and mob them. You were
at that sideline saying let us add him, let us ad.

Speaker 20 (51:42):
Him, no doubt, that was incredible, especially it kind of
have to a better person talking about Tyler Mellow and
what he stands for.

Speaker 12 (51:50):
As you heard Coach Gift.

Speaker 20 (51:51):
Talk about him, just a guy who holds himself to
such a high standard as a football player, but also
as a man. I respect him a lot off the
field and just who he himself as, and so it
was exciting to see him get his moment. I didn't
even know that was in the game plan, I mean,
and so when I saw him run out, it was
like I didn't even I actually didn't see him run out.
Didn't see him till he's in the I formation, and

(52:13):
I was like, what in the world is Timmelo doing
in there? And uh, you've I bet a lot of
those guys on defense didn't even know he's a linebacker,
Like he's not on the scouting report, and so they
probably had no idea who he was. But you got
to be expecting run there. But coach Jethrow has been
just emphasizing that play flat seven on the goal line,

(52:33):
and it just seems like every day I see it
now that he's mentioned it, And so it was awesome
to see him, to see Tyler get that moment. And
me and a coach Watkins, we have a funny kind
of saying whenever we see something like not so fast
and you would have just thought we'd run lead dive,
right right off the tackle, but no here comes to

(52:54):
Team Melo in the flat somehow catching the ball.

Speaker 12 (52:57):
I was a little worried.

Speaker 20 (52:58):
I couldn't even look, honestly, I just wait to see
if the cheer, the crowd cheered or not. So I
was glad he came down with it.

Speaker 2 (53:06):
They cheered, and the Bulldogs will give them more reasons
to cheer. Saturday Night, seven thirty kick. It's not sold
out yet. Last game was, so get your tickets. Go
Bulldogs dot com. A couple of minutes left here Cam,
and you said something about Tyler mellow there cowboys. Some
of his teammates call him. You've got some nicknames too.
They really do call you Ken. I understand you and
your girlfriend actually dressed as Ken and Barbie on Halloween.
True story possibly, uh huh, don't ask my dad. I

(53:29):
also heard that you once played offensive line earlier in
your career. I don't think people would have guessed that.
And you said something about Tyler. You respect him as
a man, and I've heard a lot of your teammates
say that about you. You're one of the leaders of
FCA on campus and the chapel services. I know you
step up and pray at the start of that that
seems to be a big part of your life and

(53:49):
you're not alone on this team.

Speaker 20 (53:50):
And then yeah, no, it's been awesome to get the
support from Cam and Anthony, our team chapels. They do
an unbelievable job in leading us as men, along with
Coach Skin and just the rest of the staff. You know,
they've done a great job in setting us up. They're
more than about football around here. Like we win, we
win games, we go out and we kick buck but
on Saturday. But when we leave here after four years,

(54:13):
they're making sure the men we leave here are better
than how we showed up and leaving with a degree,
which is the most important thing. We may not appreciate
right now, but they do a great job. They do
a great job there. But going to FCA, it's a
great opportunity for all of us just to embrace the
blessings we have in our life right now. I mean,
this is such a special time, Amen, this is such

(54:35):
a special time for all of us. But it's a
stressful time. Being a student athlete is very hard and
there comes a lot of baggage with that, and so
to be able to have that outlet that the coaching
staff provides us, and that cam and ant provide us
is huge and being able to lead in that area
is pretty cool. And to see what the Lord, how

(54:56):
the Lord's blessed me through that and allowed me to
play on this stage is pretty cool. But to see
the coaching staff also buy into what the team's doing
in the chapel place inspires us too, because it's not
just us players buying into this process, it's them too,
and they're servant leaders that staff, and so for them
to go through the same process as us inspires us.

Speaker 12 (55:16):
So but it's pretty cool. And you know, we just
get to shine the Lord's glory.

Speaker 2 (55:21):
So keep shining, my friend. We're out of time, and
thanks to everybody who came to the point, Patio Bar
and Bi Stow. Remember next week's show will be at
the airport as we welcome home the honor flight. Thanks
for listening to the Bulldog Football Hour on the Bulldog
Sports Network from their field.
