to Dallas four the SEC Media Days. As we are now just fifty nine
days away from kickoff between Texas andColorado State, I'm excited. I can't
imagine how excited y'all are as.Texas looks to begin their first season in
(01:15):
the SEC, coming off of collegefootball playoff berth in a Big Twelve championship
in their final year in the BigTwelve. As always, for this time
without Craig, happy to be joinedby Andrew Zimmel, our man down in
San Antonio, who's been helping meout these last couple weeks. Andrew,
(01:37):

R is going to be much needed. Yeah, especially for you, because
you've been pulling double duty these lastcouple weeks, filling in for hard,
filling in for me, doing everythingfrom San Antonio to Austin, a lot
(01:59):
of dry having back and forth upthe thirty five corridor. What is your
July fourth looking like? Tomorrow? So I have a couple of friends who
invited me over. So we're gonnado a little burgers and brod some fireworks.
I'm excited. We're gonna have togo get some fire extinguishers though,
because I am concerned we're going todo it in the Texas hill country.
I do not want to burn downthe hill country. Good plan, good
(02:23):

of that on demand in live andof course you can use it this upcoming
football season, basketball season, baseballseason, softball season, as Texas will
join the SEC for the first year. A little housekeeping on what is to
(03:07):
come here on today's show. Ofcourse, we have been giving away free
tickets to jelly Roll all week longand we will continue to do that here
on this shortened week, so staytuned throughout the program if you want to
see the country music sensation known asjelly Roll. Of course inconceivable as always
(03:29):
on a Wednesday, and we mighthave to throw in some Florida Man story
since we will not have a typicalFlorida Man Friday this week. Jeff Barker
from CBS Austin will be joining usin a three o'clock hour. Always fun
to have him in studio to talka little sports. He is a California
kid, so I want to gethis thoughts on this Bronnie James situation as
(03:51):
Bronnie James signing a four year dealguaranteed with a fourth year team option,
but almost unprecedented for a second rounddraft pick, especially a fifty fifth round
selection. But of course, rememberhe is the son of Lebron James,
and it does sound like the Lakershave announced that he will be spending most
(04:14):
of his time in South Bay,but guid a feeling he will share the
court with his dad, especially ifhis dad only has one or two years
left in the Professional Football League. Also, some more audio want to get
to from the SEC celebration. SECCommissioner Greg Sanki was out there and he
talked about Texas and Oklahoma joining theleague and what that process was like.
(04:38):
Also Fix Schaeffer Rodney Terry, theTexas women's and men's head basketball coaches,
joined the show, and also somemore audio from Steve Sarkeys that we didn't
get to. He's been making kindof a media tour with various talk shows.
You heard from him on the JoeKlatt Show this past week, went
on the Greg mcclroy Show, andthere was some more audio I wanted to
(05:00):
get to with the Texas defense, especially the defensive line, which might be
an area of concern for Texas footballgoing forward, especially in the trenches the
ed spots. It looks like theywere in fabulous shape, but maybe the
DT's how old Texas replaced Defandre Sweatin Bier Murphy. So we'll get to
all of that here. On today'sshow, Andrew real Quick, I mentioned
(05:20):
the Brinnie James situation. You're nota big Laker fan, but I'm curious,
how are you reacting to this story. It's obviously been huge news.
We've never really had anything like this. The closest comparison I can think of
is is possibly Ken Griffy Senior andjunior. But Ken Griffy Sr. Was
(05:43):
not considered one of the top threebaseball players of all time when his son
came up. So looking at thisstory here that's making, you know,
national headlines. What has been youroverall reaction to the Bronnie James news.
Like I said, Cam as ajust a human on a human level.
The story is super cool to seea guy from Akron, Ohio, single
mother make it to the NBA andthen have a twenty year career be arguably
(06:06):
the best player of all time andthen now get to play with his kid.
It's just an amazing Disney story.Ever, like this is fairytale sports
story. But as like a sportsfan, I'm not exactly thrilled by like
the nepotism angle. I'm not thrilledthat Rich Paul and lebron James kind of
forced this. I'm not thrilled thata guy that averaged less than five points
per game in college got like ai think a guaranteed five million dollar contract.
(06:31):
Those parts made me feel a littlevicky. Yeah, that's a lot
of money guaranteed there for a nineteenyear old who really didn't do anything at
USC. That part of it,I don't love the Disney side of it.
The part that could be it madefor TV, Hallmark movie, I'm
all in for. Yeah. Iwasn't glued to every USC game this season,
(06:51):
but there were times where they wouldbe on, because you know,
they play in the West Coast, they would be on late at night,
and you know, but okay,USC, Oregon, USC Colorado. I'll
turn it on and see not justBronnie but Isaiah Callier of course, who
was a first round draft pick thisseason. Dennis Rodman's son actually played on
(07:12):
the team as well, which Idid not know until watching it. But
when I would watch USC play, you kind of did not know that Bronnie
James was on the court, andfrom eye tests, he just didn't stand
out, not until you know, the announcers would mention it, it's Bronnie
James, and it'd be like, okay. But watching USC play this season,
(07:32):
he seemed to me just like anyother dude playing basketball. On a
course, that's not the case.He is the son of Lebron James and
a big reason why he was draftedby the Lakers the fifty fifth overall pick.
If not for being Bronnie James,he probably goes undrafted. If not
for being Bronnie James, he probablyspends another year in college developing, and
the best thing for him is tojust get that time developing. And you
(07:55):
know, I feel bad for himon the human level as well, because
he's got to go through a lotof pressure that most human beings do not
know how to handle and how totake. Fortunately, his dad, Lebron,
you know, was called the ChosenOne before he even played a second
in the NBA. He can helphis son deal with that, and Bronni's
been a part of the spotlight eversince he was a little kid. He's
(08:15):
been around the NBA, he's beenin locker rooms, he's dealt with the
media before. But you worry aboutthe pressure that's been put on him because
obviously he's in the NBA and ifnot for his dad, he wouldn't be
there. But also there comes anadded pressure to him being Lebron james Son
to being on the Los Angeles Lakerswith him, a team that, by
the way, is trying to wina championship. Yeah, I think that
(08:39):
you are onto something there can becauseif he was playing for the Memphis Grizzlies
or the Orlando Magic, maybe hekind of goes underneath the radar a little
bit more. But he's on thepremier franchise playing with his dad. And
look, we all have mentors whocan kind of help us to get navigate
through stuff. Like we had ateacher who helped us do a college essay,
right, we had a professor whohelped us get our first job.
(09:00):
It's a little different when you're inthe NBA. Because even though Lebron was
able to take all that pressure andnot have it completely break him in half.
That's not to say that Browny won'tyou know, so, I really
hope that the expectations for this guyis just to be a very good second
round pick and not to be thebest player in the league. Yeah,
when you're get in compared to DrewHolliday, who played a fantastic role on
(09:24):
the Boston Celtics, who won anNBA championship with the Milwaukee Bucks as a
number two option, that's really notfair, especially for a kid who was
drafted fifty fifth overall. It's avery interesting conversation. We will continue it
in the second hour when Jeff Barkercomes in, But up next we can
talk a little Texas football as SteveSarkishan had some thoughts about his defense,
(09:46):
especially the secondary and the defensive linethat has to replace tofanre Sweat and Byron
Murphy. How will they do thatin their first season in the SEC.
All that and more here on theCraig Way Show. Glad to have you
with us here on this Wednesday. You are listening on Sports Radio AM thirteen
