Speaker 1 (00:00):
You've heard me describe it the worst commuting day of
the week. Yes, it's Tuesday, but we're glad to be
with you, comfortably ensconced inside the iHeartRadio compound. Good afternoon, everybody,
Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone otherwise known as thirteen hundred The Zone.
We're just the Zone. My name is Craig Wait, glad
(00:21):
to have you with us. We're with you each and
every weekday afternoon, Monday through Friday from two pm to
five pm. US, of course, includes the producer Jay Carmon,
who is feeling much better because of that touchdown pastor
Roma doun say that got him a fantasy football win.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Correct, correct, And Craig. It turns out that Craig Way
Show went to and O last night.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
Well, I said this yesterday. I'll repeat it again that
I understand that the one of the most boring things
that folks can talk about on the radio show is
how their fantasy football teams do. I get it. I
understand that's ed. We had the bizarre situation of me
adding Matt Crater late, no more bizarre than Buffalo actually
having to add him to the roster. Of the weekend
(01:04):
because of the injury to Tyler Bass, and he comes through.
He had a red eye flight over night, didn't know
most of his teammates just kind of went out there
and Bank Bank Bank octoum three field goals and his
extra points and that made the difference. That helped me
because I made the roster move actually while calling the
Texas San Jose State football game on Satday. It was
during a commercial timeout when I made the roster move
off of that and the guy beat. Our good friend Marconique,
(01:30):
the voice of the Lake Travis Cavaliers, actually saw that
and then he texted me and they said, dude, you
made a roster move in the middle of calling the
Texas game. I was like, yeah, I did, but it
was during a TV timeouts. So I still thought it
was gonna lose last night because I was down four points.
I did have Aaron Jones of the Vikings left, but
nobody else, and he had nobody else. And it's well
into the fourth quarter and Aaron Jones had I think
(01:52):
like five total yards from scrimmage or something. It wasn't much,
and so I thought I'm gonna lose this game. After
all of that, and then he catches the touchdown pass
from JJ McCarthy. So I do wind up winning the thing,
I think by total seven points when it's all said
and done. But it's weird and you needed help from
Romadonsay to get your win.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
I did.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
I needed help from replay assist ruling Caleb Williams short
and then Roma Doonsay on that one yard touchdown took
me from a seven point deficit to a one point win.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
There you go. Okay, So we're happy today, but we're
happy for other reasons as well. I got a couple
of good guests looking forward to visiting with here. One
is coming up in just a few minutes. We'll visit
with John Titcher, who's been the voice of the UTEP
Miners for forty five years. Good dude, and I've gotten
to know him over the years as Texas has played UTEP,
(02:44):
and John'll be with us to talk about the UTEP Miners.
They're one in one, just as Texas is one in one.
Miners coming into Austin with one of the top highly
recruited quarterbacks a couple of years ago in the nation
at Malachi Now started off at USC and matriculated ultimately
(03:05):
to you tip and has his season off to a
good start. So we'll visit with him coming up to
the two o'clock hour. We also have Inconceivable in this
two o'clock hour, and there's a sports related thing, a
college football related note in Inconceivable, as well as in
our fast food junk food update, a breakfast cereal update.
(03:27):
Where do you stand? Havn't ash is? Where do you
stand with breakfast cereals?
Speaker 3 (03:30):
I eat it almost every day?
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Do you really?
Speaker 3 (03:32):
But none of those junk food cereals.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
See that's why this won't apply to you. Then what
do you eat? The healthy ones? What do you eat?
Speaker 3 (03:40):
I try to stay on the healthier side.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Something with a little oat or protein punched to it,
little oatmeal square.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
No cocoa crispies for you.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
Oh no, that's why in my childhood guilty pleasures, Captain
Crunch and Lucky Charms.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Well, then you're going to be interested in this thing
that we're going to have coming up in Inconceivable. By
the way, and I'll toss that there. We do this
about once a year anyway, the breakfast cereal question. So
since I have a piece of information that fits into Inconceivable,
I'll toss it out there for you and you can
(04:17):
text us certainly on the text line. All you have
to do is text the word Texas follow by your
question or comment to eight one, five three zero. So
the text question today is you can have only one
breakfast cereal the rest of your life? What is it?
You can only have one one? So what would yours
be if you could only have one? I know you
(04:39):
said you try to sample a variety of ones that
are good for you, but you can only have one
for the rest of your life. Any other brands, any
other varieties? What would it be?
Speaker 2 (04:49):
I think the frosted Miniwheat's going to take the cake.
That's going to be right in the middle of my
axis of junk food cereal and healthy cereal.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
Yeah yeah, who else loves frosted many weeds?
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Who is that?
Speaker 1 (05:03):
My miniature schnauzer, Oh dog, Sophie.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
She likes she can handle the frosting.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Well, we give her one every now and then. We
don't overload her with much of that.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
You know what she would like?
Speaker 2 (05:13):
The the I forget if it's the Walmart brand or
a GV brand of many weeds where you get the
package but it's just.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
One large, big sack of it. Right, she would eat anything,
so it doesn't really matter. But yes, all right, so yeah,
if you if you have a ride or diye cereal,
what is it for me? It would be it would
be Cocoa Crispies. If it was for me, See, it's
my all time favorite breakfast aereals Cocoa Crispies. Whenever we
(05:40):
go on vacation to the beach and run a house
at the beach. When we go to the go to
the grocery store in North Carolina, it's food Lion, or
we go to the grocery store there where the rental
where we runt a beach house h during every summer,
there's always a box of Cocoa Crispies that makes it
there into the pantry.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
To me, that's a great vac cereal because on vacation,
I don't care if I'm hungry two hours after breakfast.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Right in the real world, different stories. I guess stay
full until lunch.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Yeah, and I don't need it that much at home.
But if I was only to go with one, it
would be it would be Coco Crispy's delicious and yours
would be frosted mini weeds. Well, yeah, okay, all right,
So for those of you that want to participate in that,
that's okay. There it is. All you have to do
is tell us what you want. If you can only
(06:29):
have one breakfast hero, that's the only one you can have,
can't eat any other, and it'll be people said, I
don't even eat breakfast here, and that's cool. But if
you are a cereal guy or a girl, what would
it be? Three o'clock hour. Greg Tepper, editor in chief
Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, joins us for our weekly
conversation on college hand high school football in the lone
(06:51):
Star State, so he'll be with us. We'll also here
in the three o'clock hour from Arche, so that'll be
in the three o'clock hour, and Brian Schottenheimer to come
in the four o'clock hour, so we'll have that as well.
So all of that is on deck this afternoon, and again,
(07:12):
if you just want to text us on other topics, again,
the text line is open. You text the word Texas
and then add your question or comment to eight one
five three zero. Standard messaging and data rates may apply
up next. John Tycher, the play by play voice of
the UTEP Miners here on thirteen under the Zone speaking
to Kings. A guy who's certainly certainly dean of the
(07:34):
play by play voices in this state, joins us now
on the Hotline. Now in his forty fifth season as
the play by play voice of the UTEP Miners is
John tycher Or It joins us now, John, I really
appreciate the time. How are you today, good, Craig.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
Great to be with you and looking forward to heading
to Austin and being a DKR on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
Does it seem like you've been at it for forty
five years?
Speaker 4 (07:59):
No, absolutely not, And I guess if it did, Craig,
I wouldn't be doing this anymore. I'd find something else
to do. But it's every bit as exciting and interesting
and enjoyable as it was when I first started this
back in nineteen eighty one a UTEP and still look
forward to to each and every day preparing for what
(08:20):
transpires on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
I would imagine both of us. In fact, most play
by play guys are certain creatures of habit on certain things,
and that includes, you know, the people that work around
and with you. So I am kind of curious you know,
it's not often that you know that we see, you know,
a change in the booth with the analyst, but you've
(08:43):
got something unique in the booth this year in a
former UTEP coach and Aaron Price. How's that gone so far?
Speaker 4 (08:50):
Yeah? He Actually Aaron's first game with me was last week, Craig.
But you know, I've known and worked with Aaron as
broadcaster and coach for over twenty years, so it's not
like we were starting from that relationship from scratch. So
we had a good time last Saturday, and in order
to continue at DKR this Saturday.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
Let me get your thoughts on the second season for
Scottie Walden because I want to. I mentioned this once
on the air on my show, and I'm going to
mention it again that every summer at the Texas High
School Coaches Association's annual Coaching School, I have the pleasure
of moderating a panel discussion with all now thirteen Division
(09:36):
one FBS coaches and they're all up on the stage
and my charge is to make sure that every one
of them gets to speak a couple of times at
least within an hour's time frame, which is a little
bit of a challenge. But I have to say that
one of the more delightful guys to come across and
a visit with one of the more engaging people was
Coach Walden, and we had a great conversation both before
(09:59):
and ring the panel and then afterwards as well. And
I know there's a great deal of excitement and optimism
surrounding him. He kind of just exudes optimism, doesn't he.
Speaker 4 (10:10):
Yeah, no question about it. And he was the perfect
high at the perfect place at the perfect time, Craig.
Last year, he was the second youngest Division one or
FBS head coach in the country. And just his energy
and his enthusiasm I think is a template for G
five programs and certainly the UTEP program moving forward. But
(10:34):
he's infused so much energy and enthusiasm and belief in
this particular program. You know, I listen to him talk
and I can't believe the wisdom that he has at
the tender young age of thirty five. But he's been
a head coach for what seven eight years now at
various levels, so you know, he's I think he's certainly
(10:58):
learned his lessons well.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
Well, one of the things, uh, even in that panel discussion,
was asked that was put before the coaches is how
to build a program? What what what are the things
that you do? Because you know, we were in a
room with like nine hundred high school coaches and they're
all taking copious notes about how you start and build
and improve and establish a program. And and I was
(11:21):
I was impressed with his answers about it because what
what he talked about is and it was similar to
what I remember coach Sarkisian talking about when first got here,
about getting getting bigger, faster, stronger. Everybody endeavors to do that,
but you have to make sure to do that. And
he said, we we had a mission to do that
(11:41):
at Austin p and and that's what he did and
uh and nine and three in his final season there.
And I would imagine that's probably a keynote for him,
is to build up not only build up the talent base,
but to really build it up in its skill and
size level.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
No question about it. And I think it very obvious
to those that watched the program that the Miners are
much bigger, faster, and stronger in twenty twenty five than
they were in twenty twenty four. One of the things
that Scotty has done. You know, he's a Texas native
and he and his staff Craig have absolutely blanketed the
(12:19):
lone star state. In fact, no program has signed more
Texas high school kids over the last two years than
Scottie Walden and his staff have, so that has been
a big, big priority for him.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
I want to ask you about Sean Wilson, Hassan Wilson,
who had that ninety four yard touchdown run the other
night against you T Martin and rushed for over one
hundred and seventeen yards. Son'll folks a little bit about
the makeup of this guy and the caliber running back
he is.
Speaker 4 (12:48):
Yeah, you know kid that played at Charlotte for a
couple of years and was the forty nine ers leading
rusher last season average better than six yards catch, had
a couple of one hundred yard games. He's a bigger, physical,
more physical back and miners having the rest of the
(13:11):
rest of their stable and kind of had to wait
behind camp Thomas the first week of the year. In fact,
didn't get but a pass reception in that opening game
against Utah State. With Cam Thomas un available last week,
a song got his opportunity and actually produced and this
is the one undred and eighth year of UTEP football competition,
(13:32):
the longest play from scrimmage last week in the history
of the program, a ninety four yard touchdown run, and
UTEP's home opener. So he's been. He's been a welcome edition.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
No doubt about it. Okay, John, everybody's going to zero
went on Malachi Nelson, and I guess that kind of
figures given his high profile in his recruiting. In fact,
arch Manning was asked in the news conference yesterday how
acquainted he was since was around that same time, and
he said, yeah, we know each other. I've texted him
couple of times. Nice guy. Wishing the best of luck
(14:07):
the rest of the season, obviously after this week. But this,
I know some folks should say, how did this guy
wind up here? Because he started off at USC, but
it looks like he's really found the home there and
he'll pass it.
Speaker 4 (14:20):
Well. It's an opportunity, is what it is. Craig. He
didn't play at USC, he didn't play at Boise State.
He needed an opportunity to get out on the field.
So he may not be making the kind of cash
that others in his situation are making, But what he
does get here at UTEP, and what he has received
(14:41):
is an opportunity. And I think that's one of the
great aspects of Saturday's matchup is you've got two of
the most highly recruited players in the class of twenty
twenty three at clashing at quarterback with Malachi Nelson and
Arch Manning on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
Visiting with John Tys, who the play by play voice
of the UTEP miners here on thirteen hunder the Zone,
Let's talk about this Orange warm defense. I've been meaning
to ask about them. Ten sacks recorded in the first
two games that ties for number one in the country
in FBS and tied for second on the five and
a half sacks per game average. What's been the big
(15:18):
thing that you've noticed about this group that has made
them as aggressive and as effective as they've been early.
Speaker 4 (15:25):
Well, one of the things so that Walden and his
staff did this offseason, Craig, is they went into the
transfer portal, and you know, they took some FBS kids,
but they took a lot of kids from the FCS level,
from the Division two level, and from the nai A level,
and they were all producers, very productive at their respective levels. So,
(15:49):
for instance, They brought in a kid named Mishad Hall
who was an HBCU All American, had eleven sacks and
fourteen tackles for loss last year at South Carolina State,
kid named Udoka Zani, who has been all over the
place the first two UTEP games, didn't really get an
opportunity last year at Boise State. Has gotten that opportunity
(16:13):
at UTEP in twenty twenty five and thus far has
been very productive. They've got a kid on the corner
and Neil Campbell who was a two time INNAIA All
American at Indiana Wesleyan, a three time team captain, a
three time first team All League player, sixteen career interceptions
in forty nine career games at Indiana Wesleyan. So highly
(16:35):
productive players and several of them that Walden and his
staff have gone out and brought into this UTEP program well.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
And I would imagine also this is going to be
one of the keys that coach Walden be's stressing with
his teammate, with his team going into the Saturday's game
and really brings home a real major point, I think
in this game. And it's third down, because here come
the Miners first and conference to US a tenth in
FBS in opponent third down conversions, the Miners have only
(17:08):
allowed six third downs to be converted in twenty nine attempts.
That's an average of under twenty one percent. Meanwhile, the
long Horn offense at times looking really really good, but
they've also sputtered on third downs, only converted to in
twelve attempts last Saturday. And I would imagine that's going
to be one of the crucial things that's stressed to
the minor defenses to keep on keeping on with regard
(17:30):
to this third down stuff.
Speaker 4 (17:32):
Yeah, I think down in distance will be key Craig
for you, Teb, both offensively and defensively. Obviously, offensively you
can't get behind the chains, and probably the miners are
going to need to put the long Horns in some
uncomfortable situations offensively as well in terms of down and distance.
So it's going to be interesting to see how that goes.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
Let me get back go back to this thing that
point you may just a moment ago, and get you
to expand on the little bit. Because Sark was asked
about this as well, and about guys who transfer, and
he said it is fascinating. He said, when you go
up against guys who played for you at another program,
and he said, it's fascinating that, but also just fascinating
to watch growth of guys. And he said, you know,
(18:17):
some guys elect the state of program and it winds
up serving them well, and other ones it winds up
not serving them well. He brought up Michael chaff the
Long Wrorns veteran safety as a guy who came in
as a walk on and kind of persevered and he said,
but you know what, that path isn't for everybody. And
then he talked about, you know, the transfers that they've
gotten in and he said, it's always interesting to watch
(18:39):
guys who you may have recruited at the time, and
because he was also asked about Malachi but since Texas
had recruited him at the time that he landed at
USC to see him progress, and I guess on a
larger scale it speaks to what you were talking about,
with what coach Walden and his staff were looking at,
being unafraid to dip into the FCAES or D two
(19:01):
or as you said, even the NAI pool to find
guys who and correct me if you differ with me
on this have to be the right fit for the program,
and it looks like coach Walden has that well.
Speaker 4 (19:12):
And what they call it, Craig is okags are kind
of guys. Yeah, UTEP under Scotty Walden has become very predicted,
very particular in terms of the type of kids that
they want to coach and want to be a part
of this program. So not only producers at levels below
(19:36):
the FBS level, but kids that are okags are kind
of guys, and that those are the type of kids
that Walden and his staff are bringing in here at UTIP.
Speaker 1 (19:46):
Here's the other thing I wanted to ask you about,
and this is in the ever changing landscape of college football.
I look at UTIP in Conference USA, and I'll look
at those teams in Conference US, and you have road
trips obviously playing Sam Houston down in Houston in their
(20:07):
temporary home as well. But you go to Kennesaw, Georgia,
you got to New Art, Delaware, You've got to Springfield, Missouri.
So it's kind of far flung, and I know there's
bigger things on the horizon for the miners, but it
makes it unusual, doesn't it in this day and age
of college football?
Speaker 4 (20:25):
Yeah, I think we're I think we're going to four
places I believe it or not this year, Craig that
I've never done a game before in football, so that
that does make it a little bit different. But again,
as you said, on the horizon, this comes to an
end in twenty twenty five and twenty twenty six, miners
are going back with several of their longtime rivals from
(20:46):
the Western Athletic Conference days at the Mountain West Conference,
so things will get a little more sane in twenty
twenty six moving forward for UTEP Athletics.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
Okay, hey John, it's a great pleasure as always look
forward to. And I will tell you this because you've
been to DKR a few times, so you know what
it's like, the visiting radio boots in the same spot.
But just to let you know, because there's ongoing construction,
what they did is they what's directly in front of you,
and what has been directly in front of you and
(21:17):
still is the photo deck area. The lower part has
been raised up so in order to give you sight line,
they've built like a riser platform in your booth. There's
one in our booth as well. You'll still be able
to see over the top. But it's a slightly different
look for you.
Speaker 4 (21:33):
It'll be just fine, Craig.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
You know when you've done it.
Speaker 4 (21:35):
As long as I have.
Speaker 1 (21:36):
As you well.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
Know, Craig, you see a little bit of everything in
your travels, don't you.
Speaker 1 (21:41):
No doubt about it? Absolutely? Hey, John, I appreciate it.
Travel safely. Look forward to seeing you this weekend here
in Austin.
Speaker 4 (21:48):
Me too, Craig, Thanks, all right, you bet.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
That's John Teicher, play by play voice of the UTEP Miners.
I first met John. Gosh. This goes back to December
of nineteen ninety four. Texas was playing in the Sun
Bowl game against a North Carolina team coach by Mac Brown,
but also the Long Worn basketball team was playing and
I believe it was called the Sun Carnival Holiday Basketball Tournament,
(22:13):
and that's where our first met John back then. So
this would have been December of nineteen ninety four, and
it was this great anticipation because you know, the legendary
Don Haskins was coaching UTEP at the time, of course,
had won the first national championship for a school in
the state of Texas and NCAA basketball with that groundbreaking
(22:35):
starting five back in nineteen sixty six, the first All
Blacks starting five and they beat Kentucky to win the
NCAA Championship at colefield House in College Park, Maryland, and
coach Haskins the Bear was still the head coach there,
and it was this great anticipation of Texas and UTEP
meeting in the tournament final. Was really looking forward to it,
and UTIP got upset in the semi final the first game,
(23:01):
I believe it was by Washington State, and or maybe
it was even Pan am Texas Pan American and the
Lo Orange wounded up playing them, I guess, in the
tournament final after they had played Washington State the night before,
So unfortunately I didn't get to play them there. But
that's where I met John at that tournament there, and
then of course Texas played in that Sunball game. I
(23:23):
always enjoyed going ll Pass So it's a nice town.
All right. Up next, we'll bring you Inconceivable, which does
have a college football note to it, not that it's
that inconceivable that there can be bad officiating in certain leagues.
(23:44):
This particular call is just downright weird. We'll get to that,
and also we'll get to more of your tex questions,
Like I said, if you had a go to breakfast cereal,
you can only have one, one flavor, one variety for
the rest of your life. What would it be? And
(24:05):
there's some people responding on that. We'll get to that
because the reason why I say that is because we
have a breakfast cereal item in our junk food Fast
Food to update here for Inconceivable. That's up next when
we continue right here on sports Radio AM thirteen under
the Zone and where you always find us for free
on the Iart Radio app. Second hour of the program
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone, Craigay
(24:27):
with you alongside the producer Jay Carmon. Glad to have
you with us. As always, we avail ourselves to you
and offer you the text line if you'd like to
comment or have a question for us I'll get to
do is text the word Texas. That can be with
a capital T and little EXAs or all caps however
you want to do it. But text the word Texas
(24:50):
follow by your question or comment to eight one five
three zero. So that's the way to go on that.
We offered up a question to you because we had
the Inconceivable story this morning or this afternoon, of all twelve.
I didn't know there were twelve different varieties of Captain Crunch.
I did not know that, and some of its seasonal.
(25:11):
But there's a total of twelve. And so it got
me to think, and you know, I really like you
like Captain Crunch.
Speaker 5 (25:18):
I do.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
Yeah, yeah, I do too.
Speaker 3 (25:20):
But do there need to be twelve?
Speaker 1 (25:22):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (25:22):
I still don't know.
Speaker 1 (25:23):
Yeah, right exactly. So it ranked them from one to twelve.
Number one all time was the Captain of the original
Captain Crunch with crunch berries. I was number one.
Speaker 2 (25:31):
I'm surprised we've had no love for cinnamon toast crunch
this afternoon.
Speaker 6 (25:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:35):
So I did offer up the question to you if
you had one, you can only have one specific brand, type,
whatever of cereal to eat the rest of your life.
In other words, and I'm not saying you eat cereal
every day for your life. I'm just saying that if
you wanted to eat cereal, you could only choose one
(25:56):
particular breakfast cereal. What would it be? And for you,
you said it would be frosted many weeds.
Speaker 2 (26:02):
Yes, especially if you can bring back the old maple
brown sugar.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
You don't see those on the shelves anymore.
Speaker 1 (26:08):
Yeah, that's true. That's true. For me, it's cocoa crispies
and but but I like lots. I like apple jacks
and pops and smacks and reeses and the peanut butter
crunch and all all that kind of junkie stuff. Yeah,
I like it. But I but I've got a big
old box of cornflakes sitting in my pantry, just regular
(26:30):
old Kellogg's corn flakes. Maybe it might even be the
ch B flavor, the HB brand of corn flakes, because
not only do I like, my dog likes him, and
I will sprinkle a few corn flakes and her kibble. Sometimes.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
You like a Quaker Life cereal? Yes, Cinnamon Life yes?
Speaker 1 (26:48):
Yeah, yeah, not bad? No, No, I remember the old
Life cereal commercial. Mikey Let give it a Mikey. Let
Mikey try. He hates everything, you know, with the thing
dropping on him, and he likes it, you know, the
Mikey Life cereal things. So anyway, we said, you know
what would be if you could only have one cereal
(27:11):
in your life? What would it be like? Chuck and
Houston said it would either be Lucky charms or fruit loops.
When I think of fruit loops, I always think of
Mickey Tettleton, the former Major leaguer used to eat them
before games, kind of like how weight Bogs would heat
chicken before.
Speaker 3 (27:27):
E Marshawn Lynch and his skittles.
Speaker 1 (27:29):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. Mickey Tettleton, who I knew because he
happened to share the same birthday as me, the exact
same day, the exact same year, next Tuesday, we both
turned the same age. But he he liked fruit loops.
He would eat fruit loops all the time. He liked those.
We've had, you know, Captain crunch Crunchberry's offered, you know,
(27:50):
like we said, so if you have a you have
a specific cereal that you like. For my wife, I
think it would be lucky charms. But like I said,
she said, it's like cracks. She has to be careful about.
We don't keeping you know, a lucky charm that When
Chris Beard was the basketball coach here, that's what he
ate for breakfast. Like we'd be on the road and
you know, there'd be an omelet station, you know, for
(28:11):
the players, or there would be you know whatever the
buffet set up scrambled eggs and bacon and sausage and
the hash Browns, and there'd be here. He'd sit over
there and eat two bowls a Lucky Charm every time,
every morning. Two bowls of Lucky Charms. That was his deals.
Speaker 3 (28:28):
That's hilarious.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
Yeah, that's what he That's what he did. I won't
even ask Greg Tepper because he's he strikes me as
a serial guy. You know what he would, what he would,
what he would go for as well. All Right, so
you stayed up and watched all of Vikings Bears last.
Speaker 3 (28:44):
Night, right, yes, I did.
Speaker 2 (28:46):
It was really two different games in one huh.
Speaker 1 (28:49):
It does. Yeah, And because the first half looked like
it was completely completely dominated and controlled by the Bears,
especially with the six to start in the second half,
and I started really watching more of the Dodgers Rockies
games a Dodger fan than I was watching the football game.
Then I saw Minnesota come back and I saw him
(29:10):
get the one touchdown. And then, like I said, I
had a passing interest because of fantasy football. And so
when Aaron Jones caught the touchdown pass, it may be
happy because I knew had won my fantasy game. But
to see JJ McCarthy turn around in his first NFL
start turn it around from what he had done in
(29:34):
the first half and the pick six early second half,
It's pretty impressive to see him turn around and stay
composed and lead them back to two touchdowns to win
the game.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
I couldn't agree more. I can't remember a harsher turnaround.
I mean, in the first half, genuinely could not string
two good plays together, and he had the issues getting
to play calls in none of the timing was working out.
But then, you know, I had to remind myself Greg
he hadn't played football in over you know, two years,
(30:05):
pretty much almost two years because of how quickly into
the preseason he suffered his knee injury a year ago,
so you know it took him some time in a
hostile environment on the road. But I'm thinking, man, Kevin
O'Connell's system is perfect, perfect for a rookie quarterback. So
if things are going wrong and it looks like it's
on the quarterback, it's probably on the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
Good thing he turned it around. Yeah there you go.
Speaker 1 (30:27):
Oh, by the way, we have a couple more suggestions
showing the cerea the first ball. Some made on the
text line said neutral grain almond raisin. Why are you
even eating cereal that just defeats the purpose. Cereal is
supposed to be fun and I'm supposed to take care
of yourself by eating cereal.
Speaker 2 (30:47):
Right, what about what about like a raisin brand with
extra protein?
Speaker 4 (30:50):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (30:50):
Yeah, I like raisin bran crunch.
Speaker 3 (30:54):
At the clusters in there.
Speaker 1 (30:55):
Yeah it's a little crunchy. They have raisin bran crunch.
I like that, But just neutra grain and almond raisin.
Just it doesn't sound like much fun. You know, it's
serious here. We're supposed to be fun. Here's a perfect example.
Speaker 3 (31:09):
That's the salad of cereals.
Speaker 1 (31:10):
Yeah, it is, it really is. Here's here. Here's a
perfect example. The World's Strongest Man, Mark Henry, co host
of The Morning Kickoff with My Cardball Harch Monday through Friday,
seven am to nine am here on the Zone. You
know what his favorite cereals are Golden grams and cinnamon
toast crunch, because are pretty much almost the same. He said,
(31:33):
no healthy cereal for him. See, I love that man.
Is He's great.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
Put those cereals on the hype train.
Speaker 1 (31:40):
Those are great. I love golden grams and cinnamon Toa's crunch.
I do love both of those absolutely, you know, but
I'm I'm a junkie cereal guy. I like those like
like I said, apple Jack's or you know, are lucky Charms.
He's like, what was the one that used to like
the alphabets, which was just like lucky Charms, except without
(32:01):
the marshmallow pieces. It was just the sugar oat cereal?
You know, like that can form a word in your spoon. Yes, absolutely,
rarely did. Yeah, if you really dug around, you might
be able to get like cat or something like that
or dog out of your yes. Yeah, So that all right.
(32:22):
Coming up next, we're going to well, I'll tell you
what I did say. I was going to do this.
Let me do this right now before we get to
the break, because I did, you know, as they say
in the business, pay off the teas going into the
top of the hour, I said. The SEC announced the
conference baseball schedule for next year. So the Longhorns conference
(32:48):
schedule is out now and they they will begin their
thirty game conference schedule with weekend series against ole Miss
at UFCU diush Foulkfield March thirteenth through the fifteenth. Now,
I'm just going to run down through these and tell
them to you. March thirteenth through the fifteenth, Ole Miss
(33:09):
at Texas, March twentieth through twenty second, Texas at Auburn
March twenty seventh through twenty ninth, Oklahoma at Texas April
second through the fourth. That's a Thursday, Friday Saturday. It's
Easter weekend. Texas at South Carolina. The following weekend April
tenth through the twelve, Friday Centers at Texas at Texas,
(33:30):
A and M Market on your schedule, they are the
return of Jim Slastanglo College Station. Yeah, I know, it's
highly anticipated. What weekend is that April tenth through the twelfth. Okay,
all right, that's what March madness second weekend, No, April
tenth through twelve, it'll be over. Oh that's right, it'll
be over. It'll be on. We'll just be on the baseball,
even with the new schedule. That's right, even with the
new schedule. It's the weekend after the final four skid
(33:51):
that it finishes. Okay, good placement, then, yeah, April seventeenth
through the nineteenth. Alabama at Texas April twenty fourth through
twenty sixth, Texas at Vanderbilt May first through third, Mississippi
State at Texas, May eight through tenth, Texas at Tennessee,
and May fourteen through sixteen Missouri at Texas. Now here's
what's noteworthy about this. They play some of the teams
(34:16):
they played last year in conference play, but not all
of them, like, for example, they opened conference play Atssissippi
State last year. They have Mississippi State at home. They
have A and M in Oklahoma. That's the two permanent opponents.
Noticeably not on this schedule Arkansas, LSU and Florida. They
(34:38):
played Florida at home last year they played at Arkansas,
so they're not playing Arkansas, they're not playing LSU, and
they're not playing Florida. Out of that, but the replacing
with the likes of Tennessee and Vanderbilt, so it's still
a very competitive schedule. I have Alabama at home. They
go to South Carolina, who they didn't play last year.
They did play Auburn at home last year. They go
to Auburn. They don't play Georgia this year, who they
(35:00):
played in twenty twenty six, who they played in twenty
twenty five. So some of the teams they played last
year they don't play. Some they do, and some they
didn't play last year they do this year, like Ole
miss and Alabama. Those are on the Missouri they played
on the road last year and they get them at home.
So there's the UT Conference schedule. I'm next, I'll talk
(35:22):
some football. Greg Tepper of Dave Campbells Texas Football Magazine
here on thirteen hunderd the Zone the iconic ninety two
year old Willie Nelson, a former Abbot Panther. I might
going out as well, which brings us to our weekly
conversation with the editor in chief of Dave Campbells Texas
Football Magazine, Greg Temper, joins us on the line. Now,
(35:45):
tep before we get into the football conversation, there's other
serious business. We tossed this out because I had a
story today about the twelve and I didn't know there
were twelve twelve flavors of Captain Crunch, from worst to best,
from twelfth to number one. Number one of all time,
by the way, was just the Captain Crunch with crunch
(36:07):
berries was the all time number one. My favorite one
of those is the peanut butter, which I think they
had ranked number three. But so it got me to thinking,
and I offered it out as a question there on
our text line of folks, if you only had one
breakfast cereal, you can only have one the rest of
your life. Now I'm not saying you have to eat
it every day the rest of your life, but anytime
that you want cereal, you can only have one particular one.
(36:29):
And we got and we had, we had, you know,
answers ranging from lucky Charms, fruit lube, somebody, uh, somebody
said neutral grain, almond, raisin. I said, where's the fun
in that? Our man CB said, I love raisin brand,
but up here in the Pacific Northwest, my go to
cereals honting out cheerios, frosted flakes, he said, I eat
(36:50):
cereal at night, not for breakfast. And then somebody else,
but a very good point, said, you can't really love
any cereal unless you eat a bowl them with no
milk and no problemly having a bowl of dry fruit
loops for dessert in the evening. So I put it
to you, if you only had one, and now you've
got two young boys who probably liked cereal, what's what's
the go to in the temper house.
Speaker 6 (37:13):
Yeah, So, so this is a complicated question, because I
do love cereal. Growing up, my parents were hardly like
strict about like food, but like one of the red
lines they drew was like, well, we're not going to
have like the fruity pebbles or the cocoa puffs or
(37:33):
like the super sugary cereals in there the closest we
ever got. And this is probably gonna end up being
my pick. I think from a a because it's excellent
and beek. From a nostalgia perspective, I'm a cinnamon toasts
crunch guy. Cinemas Toast crunch is very strong. It can
be breakfast, it can also be a dessert, so it's
got some some versatility there.
Speaker 4 (37:55):
The other thing about.
Speaker 6 (37:56):
It is that, you know, I think you have to
judge Cereal in some ways by how good the milk
that's left behind is. And you want to talk about
an elite uh, you know, cereal milk is is cinnamon
Tro's crunch milk that might be mine. Our boys they
are into cheerios at the moment, honeynut cheerios. I'm trying
(38:20):
to get them into two other things, but but right
now that's that's kind of their Their go to is
is honey, not cheerios. We have not crossed the cinemon.
I have not introduced them the cinnamon toast crunch yet.
That might be something I have to take care of
even this weekend now that I'm just taking parenting advice
on the air.
Speaker 1 (38:37):
Yeah yeah, well, well you know to your to your
milk left in the bowl thing. That's a big reason
why my all time favorite is cocoa crispies because you
get a bowl of chocolate milk.
Speaker 3 (38:46):
Oh yeah, good wow.
Speaker 6 (38:48):
And and I'll tell you, you know, my my folks
would not let me have it.
Speaker 4 (38:52):
But then like what I know, whenever I would go
to Grandma and Grandpa's.
Speaker 6 (38:55):
House, they'd have the goods, right, they would have the
they would eat their oat or something.
Speaker 4 (39:00):
But when but when.
Speaker 6 (39:01):
The grandkids, the grandsons were coming over, they would go
and they'd buy that like multi pack of the mini boxes.
Speaker 4 (39:08):
And you want to.
Speaker 6 (39:08):
Talk about you want to talk about haymakers being thrown
among the temper boys, uh, fighting over the free pebbles
or the or the cocoa puffs or or those types
of things. The the lucky charms. That was That was
warfare is what that was. That was as nasty as
me and my two brothers got.
Speaker 1 (39:27):
By the way, I know this will please you because
you're a wrestling guy. Your your answer matches that of
our morning show co host, the World's Strongest Band, Mark Henry.
Love some cinnamon toast crunch for him.
Speaker 4 (39:39):
I like to think of me and and mister Henry
is kindred spirits in a lot of ways.
Speaker 6 (39:44):
Both both you know, talk for a living, both extremely strong. Yeah,
a lot of a lot of similarities between me and
Mark Hendricky.
Speaker 1 (39:53):
Sure there are all Right, let's talk a little bit
of football. I want to start with college You mentioned
what what an important game the Baylor SMU game was
going to be. Yes, important for SMU, but you said
here was a chance for Baylor to make a statement
and long and behold through the craziness of everything that
happened in that game, they made a statement.
Speaker 4 (40:13):
Yeah, oh oh, I think so.
Speaker 6 (40:15):
I think when you're talking about some of the big
winners in Week two of college football, you have to
look at what Baylor was able to do in what
I thought was a really inspired performance, especially offensively. You know,
Sawyer Robertson, that's the best game and he's certainly he's
had in a Baylor uniform four to four yards and
four touchdowns. He spread the ball around, you know, you know,
(40:37):
he hits. I think he completed past seven different receivers.
Astion Hawkins he hit ten times. Josh Cameron was his
favorite target as well. The offense in full bloom. And
more importantly, that was a team that continued to take
punches and continue to punch back because I think against
against Auburn they took some punches and they didn't always
(41:00):
have that counter. I think that this was for Baylor
really important for them to find that answer.
Speaker 4 (41:05):
Now.
Speaker 6 (41:06):
I think that there are some pretty severe concerns about
their defense, but this this could be the kind of
team that can outscore their problems and defensively, and I
think they did that. You know, for SMU to lose
at home, I think, is it hurts. They have a
get right game this week against against Missouri State on
(41:27):
the road actually at Missouri State before you know, look
they go and they're going to take on the TCU
and and for them that now becomes in a lot
of ways, I would say a must win game for them.
They got to win the skillet. You gotta go, You
gotta at least split against your Big twelve posts in
non conference because otherwise, you.
Speaker 4 (41:47):
Know, the the ACC.
Speaker 6 (41:50):
I don't know how strong, even with Florida State on
the come up, I don't know how strong that's going
to be that a two lost team, especially to teams
that I think are going to finish let's say middle
of the pack in the Big twelve TC maybe better
than that. But you've got to make sure you go
out there and take care of business about that so
(42:11):
that you can at least give yourself a fighting chance
to get back to the College Football Playoff without having
to in an at.
Speaker 4 (42:17):
Large capacity without winning the conference.
Speaker 6 (42:20):
So it's this really in a lot of ways for
Rescue removed a lot of the safety net for they
have for a return to college football playoff.
Speaker 1 (42:30):
Let me ask you about the other one, the other
Intrust State game, big in Trust State game inside, and
that was Texas State beating UTSA. Is it safe to
say that now Texas State is the G five program
in the state of Texas.
Speaker 4 (42:48):
I think it has to be right.
Speaker 6 (42:50):
I mean, this was a really impressive performance from from
the Bobcats because of the way that they did it
in a special the offensive firepower that they really unleashed here.
You know, Brad Jackson I thought played particularly well in
this ball game. Three total touchdowns, took care of the
football for the most part. They got enough from the
(43:12):
running game. You know, they're going to have some they
have their own issues defensively, But I think that what
you saw from Texas State was a moment of arrival
and an opportunity to knock off a rival like that,
know utsay, and to go out there and say that, yeah,
we are the team to be as far as G
five is concerned in the state of Texas. I think
(43:34):
that was awfully, awfully impressive from G. J.
Speaker 4 (43:38):
Kinney squad.
Speaker 6 (43:39):
And you know, now you take a look at what
they're what they're going to be up against within the
Sun Belt. I don't know, you know, the only other
undefeated team in the Sun Belt right now is app State,
and app State was having a whale the time. Whether
I believe an SCS opponent is all last week. So
I think if you're Texas State, the everything is right
in front of you, and I think that this is
(44:01):
you want to talk about a confidence builder, going on
the road to a really hostile environment there at the
Alamodome and pulling off and win over UCSA.
Speaker 4 (44:08):
That is a signature win I think for GJ.
Speaker 6 (44:11):
Kinney and company and proof that they really have arrived
in a lot of ways.
Speaker 1 (44:15):
Well and no time to rest for the weary, right,
I mean, they turn around and they go to Tempee.
They play Arizona State, who they had a real shot
to beat in San Marcos last year on that Thursday night.
If not for Cam Scataboo's heroics in that one that
were just this side of what he did in that
Peach Bowl game against Texas, Texas State might have won
that game. So I hang that out there, tip, because
(44:40):
I would agree with you that right now they're the
G five top of the heap in the state. That said,
they go to Tempee, nor Texas has Washington State at
home this week, and then they go to Army and
if they can they sweep those two games, and then
Texas State should falter in Tempe, then we're maybe looking
at the mean green the better of the G five
(45:02):
programs in the state.
Speaker 6 (45:04):
Yeah, don't don't overlook what North Texas was able to
do going on the road long road trip to Michigan
to take on Western Michigan and and come away with
a really gutty overtime win, you know, and I think
that you know, there's gonna be a lot of talk
about Drew Mestamaker, a guy who I think became a
bit of a folk hero in the Bowl Game last
(45:25):
year where he was kind of thrust into you know,
duty and performed really admirably in there. And now he's
the starting quarterback there. But I think the realm, I
think the emergence of Mackenzie McGill as their running back
I think has been so important for them, and I
think it's really set them apart. So you're right, you know,
it's all out right in front of their for North Texas,
(45:46):
you know, Washington State this week. You know, they look
they get him at home. I think it's a winnable game.
I think they can, they can, you know, if they
can come out there swinging, I think they've got an
opportunity to win that game. Who knows what you're getting
from Army. Army is the most, uh perhaps in the
entire nation, the single most unpredictable team because they have
(46:07):
a loss at home to Tarleton State and then they
go on the road and beat Into State.
Speaker 4 (46:13):
So you figure that one out. Yeah, so if you're
if you're if you're North Texas, you know, especially in
what feels like.
Speaker 6 (46:20):
A winnable American Yeah, why not? Why not in North Texas?
So yeah, I think that it's it has been those
two programs, North Texas and Texas State that have kind
of risen above the others as far as uh G
five programs in the state of Texas are concerned.
Speaker 1 (46:34):
The the other thing, uh that I was going to mention, obviously,
since we're talking about intro state, Uh, you have Texas
against you tap down here on Saturday, and while Texas
will be expected to get the win, I think it's
admirable what Scottie Walden is doing with that program. And
and I know that that their their goal is to
try to make it to a Bowl this year.
Speaker 4 (46:55):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (46:55):
Let me tell you so Texas fans who may not
have been paying a ton of attention and to UTEP,
I get it. I understand. It's it's you know, they
they're a little bit off the being path. You know,
you don't deal a whole lot with what's going on
in Conference USA. And yes they are owing to but
or one on one rather at their win over over
Eth Martin.
Speaker 4 (47:14):
This past week. Two things about them.
Speaker 6 (47:16):
One, I think you're really going to enjoy Malachi Nelson,
their quarterback, a guy who's a former five star quarterback
who's bounced around, he's landed in an ol passo U
and he seems like he is starting to blossom there.
I think you're going to enjoy, you know, getting a
chance to see him, because I think he's a talented
young man. The other thing is that if you are
(47:36):
unfamiliar with Scottie Walden and you are not listened to
his press conferences or you've never heard him talk, you
want to talk about a guy who will get you
on his side real quickly, one of the most dynamic,
one of the most exciting, one of the most inspiring
young coaches. I think in all of college football, it
is easy to be a Scottie Walden fan. This guy
(47:58):
is a firecracker. In a lot of ways. He'll remind folks.
I think a lot of Joey McGuire in that he
is all energy, all the time, all positivity, and he
is all and he's trying to build this thing, uh
in a way of uh, you know, embracing that underdog
role and saying, yeah, we can do this, this is
what we Let's not talk about what we've done in
the past. Let's talk about what's possible in the future. Uh.
(48:19):
He is a he is a lot of fun one
here exactly right. Texas is almost is probably gonna have
their way with the with the miners. They're just way
more talented of a roster. But but I will tell
you that for Texas fans, if you want to see
a guy who I think has an opportunity to be
a future star in college football, Scottie Walden there at
UTEP is a name to know.
Speaker 5 (48:39):
He is.
Speaker 4 (48:39):
He is a lot, a lot of fun to watch.
Speaker 1 (48:42):
Coach UH visiting with Greg Tepper, the editor in chief
Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. Want to go to UH,
I want I want to go to high school football,
and I want to talk about the piece at carter
YH wrote UH for the Texas Football site. UH and
that and that is about oh to two teams, which
I think a lot of folks would be ready just
(49:03):
to toss him on the on the trash pile after
starting zero and two. But these are the ones that
are mentioned. Liberty Christian outstanding private School in Argyle, East
Bernard Katie, Midland Legacy, and DeSoto all oh and two.
And the the caution that's being thrown up by Carter
and your guys there is don't give up on them
(49:24):
just yet.
Speaker 6 (49:26):
Yeah, And I think for different reasons, you know, for
some of them, I think you've got a team. For example,
let's take a team like Argall Liberty Christian. Argat Liberty
Christian has played two very difficult games. They played Anna
and they have played Taxas High.
Speaker 4 (49:42):
They played two tough games.
Speaker 6 (49:43):
I think the same thing can be said about Midland Legacy.
Midland Legacy, I think, is a team that we started
the year as a favorite to win a little Southwest conference.
They have gone they have been road warriors that they
have gone on the road, you know, and they have
played Allen, they have played Ules Trinity, They're playing Lake
Travis this week, and they have been on the road.
(50:05):
That's no stranger to them. But those are also really
good teams. And so Midland Legacy could be staring own
three in the face and I wouldn't. I will say
that everything for them is still out in front of them.
The other team, there are a couple of teams there
that I think that there may be some reason for concern.
One of them is Katie eighties zero two. For the
first time in quite some time, they actually lost last
(50:26):
week to a task. To see that, we had this
note from the guy who calls our games on taxan
line for Katie, Michael Silvers, who said that it's the
first time that Katie has lost to a team three
years and lost the same team three years in a
row since nineteen ninety five when they lost to Climb
three years in a row, so that it just doesn't
(50:46):
happen there. They have been banged up, especially defensively, but
I also think that they are a team that needs
to find their identity in a running game. That's one
thing that I'm keeping an eye on, and in Brigsoto look.
Part of it is a difficult schedule. They went and
they got Molly Watts by a team in Georgia in
week one, and then they follow it up with a
kind of fits and starts, kind of incomplete performance, I
(51:09):
would say against a good obviously a good.
Speaker 4 (51:10):
North Crowley team.
Speaker 6 (51:13):
I worry a little bit about them finding consistency offensively,
which is something I didn't know that we were going
to be.
Speaker 4 (51:19):
Able to say. It's still up all out there in
front of them.
Speaker 6 (51:22):
But I would say that considering what we've seen the
first two weeks and then what we saw last week
for the opener against Duncanville for Duncanville and they played
South Oak Cliff, I would say those are teams that
is a team to keep an eye on, a team
that could be a prop a team that you know.
Speaker 4 (51:39):
Matt step brought up point that it would not be.
Speaker 6 (51:41):
Outside the realm of possibility to see to Soto miss
the playoffs in District eleven six A, and when you
think about it, Duncanville probably get into the playoffs, right
walks Ahatchie has been very good.
Speaker 4 (51:51):
You take a look at Cedar Hill, they've been excellent.
That that only leads.
Speaker 6 (51:54):
One spot and there are a lot of good teams
there in the Little Southwest Conference like Lancaster who could.
Speaker 4 (51:59):
Grab that spot as well.
Speaker 6 (52:00):
So for DeSoto, they've got to figure out their offensive
what was pretty quickly, or else I think could snowball
on them.
Speaker 1 (52:05):
Yeah, no doubt about. Okay, before I give you the
do the meanest thing we do and give you three
games and ask you to pick one, tell me about
what your recollection is of and what you learned over
time about Ga Moore because my first ever live play
(52:25):
by play game nineteen eighty two, a bye historic playoff
game Pilot Point and White Wright and Ga Moore was
the coach. And I did several games, including during that
four years in a row state championship run at Salina
that involved him. And he was always a gentleman and
a lot of fun and had a good wit about him.
But he could. He was He was a hard driver
(52:46):
as a head coach as well, and I guess that's
how you win eight state titles. And of course he
passed away last Friday.
Speaker 6 (52:53):
Yeah, when he retired back in twenty eleven, he was
the winningest coach in Texas high school football history. He
broke what many people thought was going to be an
unbreakable record when he passed Gordon Wood for the most
wins in Texas high school football history. And and a
guy who built a program in the If you want
(53:14):
to call this the modern age, I would call this
the pre modern age as far as building a program
built around culture and building a program built around an identity,
because you always knew what you were going to get
from Solina. You were always going to get an exceptional
run game. You were always going to get a ferocious defense,
and you were always going to get a team that
(53:37):
played to the echo of the whistle. I mean they
they would they you did not want to play Solina.
And it's remarkable when you take a look, you can
you can list out all of the accolades. Right, you know,
he's retired as a winning his coach. He's got the
eighth state championships, he's got you know he was he
was the architect behind the longest winning streak in Texas
high school football history. I mean, this guy, you know,
(53:59):
the four peg every it goes on and on. Uh
in the end, he was just kind of a country
guy who who who liked coach and ball. He was
a rancher. He was a guy who who who you know,
enjoyed away from football. He enjoyed the quiet life.
Speaker 4 (54:15):
I know.
Speaker 6 (54:15):
He gave an all timer speech where the Texas High
School Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which was just
full of the kind of wit and wisdom you'd expect
from a from from an old coach. He was a
you're exactly right. He was a very gracious man. But
also when it was football time.
Speaker 4 (54:32):
It was it was this time.
Speaker 6 (54:33):
And that's one thing I think is really is really
remarkable about him. And and look we're gonna there's always
conversation who's the greatest high school football coach in Texas
high school football history?
Speaker 4 (54:43):
And it's an open conversation.
Speaker 6 (54:45):
All I can say is this is that the conversation
absolutely includes ga More. He has to be considered, uh
in that conversation as the greatest coach in Texas high
school football history. It's completely because of the accolades and
especially the way that he did it. To go about
and build that program with the culture and the standards
(55:05):
that he did. I think that it was a real
loss for the Taxa high school football comunity when he
passed away last week.
Speaker 1 (55:10):
Yeah. I think what might be the most amazing thing
is he did two stints at pilot Point and two
stints at Salina, won state championships at both. His ranch
was on far in the market four fifty five, about
a halfway between Pilot Point and Salona, so he could
swing back and forth basically, which is what he did.
It is amazing. He was simply amazing. Okay, here we go.
(55:32):
Most difficult thing we do to each other. I give
you three games you transport to one, you tell me
which one it would be. One of those would be
Westlake against a task A SEDA, one would be South
Oak Cliff Longview, and one would be Salina and Gunner.
(55:53):
Which of those three are you showing up at?
Speaker 4 (55:57):
The answer is going to be Westlake in a task
to Seeda.
Speaker 6 (56:00):
That's some due respect to a matchup of state champions
Gunner and Solina, But I think that the size literally
both the physical size and also the depth.
Speaker 4 (56:09):
Size difference here plant a.
Speaker 6 (56:11):
Four A Division one, which is almost certainly going to
five next year, taking on three A Division two and Gunner.
It feels like Solana is going to be a pretty
clear favorite in that one. Topocals, you know, a non
distorgauntlet continues with long View, there will be a really
raucous crowd, uh there, and with long View taken on.
Speaker 4 (56:27):
Southolk, but that'll be a fun matchup. But the ANSWER's
got to be Westlake and Attashasda.
Speaker 1 (56:32):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (56:32):
West Lake U got back on the good foot last week,
going down in the Valley and drubbing an overmatched San
Benito team. I think that that defense is starting to
come along with the young defense but we know that,
uh you know, we know that the coach Tony Salazar
is going to get his guys up to speed as
the season goes on. This is a real gut check
for them because they're taking on one of the hottest
(56:55):
teams in Texas high school football and perhaps through two
weeks being mister Texas Football player of the Year in
Carde Max the running back or the quarterback rather for
a task Caasda. This guy has been outrageous through two games,
including one game against Katie. He has eight hundred and
eighty total yards and twelve touchdowns. He has been on
(57:17):
another planet and so it is up to this attask
of this Westlake defense Matti Splinton company to find a
way to slow him down, which has been tough sledding
for every defense he's face so far. It's a whale
of a ball game and it'll be another interesting test
for Wesley. Do you want to talk about travel, I
mean going down to play a team from the valley
(57:38):
and now they guy draveled to Houston. They are They're
getting those miles on that bus.
Speaker 1 (57:43):
No doubt about him. He's Greg Temper, Editor in chief
Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. You can catch his show.
I've been day losed as you have been by so
many people. Hey, aren't you guys doing that scoreboard show anymore?
In the answer is no, because FanDuel's not doing it anymore.
So I'm doing this game on Victory Plus a game
of the week, which, by the way is South o'cliff
(58:04):
long view this week and then and then also available
on Victory Plus as well as obviously for free at
Texas Football dot com. Is your show? You and Ashley
Pickle and And I won't say that I was actually
watching it while driving home, but I had it all.
(58:24):
I had it all.
Speaker 6 (58:25):
We actually get that.
Speaker 4 (58:26):
We actually get that a lot.
Speaker 6 (58:27):
I think we get a lot of like it's all
viewership to us, we can't go when you're looking at
your screen, but like I would bet that we have
I know we have a number of people who just
like pop it on their phone and then put the
phone's faith down in the passenger seat.
Speaker 4 (58:40):
There you go, and then listen to it. So Texas Football.
Speaker 6 (58:43):
Tonight, ten thirty pm Friday night wherever you stream.
Speaker 1 (58:46):
Absolutely, Hey, thanks TEP, appreciate it all right, talking guys,
All right, that's great teppor I head it on. I did.
I head it on in the in the truck driving back,
and as I went through the drive through to get
something to eat in Hillsboro on the drive back, but
I was watching the road. I just want to let
you know I had I had, I had the app
(59:07):
pulled up so I could hear what was going on.
I just lot of people don't know that.
Speaker 3 (59:12):
A lot of folks doing the same thing with us
right now.
Speaker 1 (59:14):
Yeah, yeah, exactly, be careful after all, right, more coming
up on thirteen under the Zone.
Speaker 4 (59:20):
It is nine six pm, two and two the Harvey
Gane one strike away, Sandy into his wind up. Here's
the bitch swink.
Speaker 1 (59:32):
I invested the perfect game. Amazing night that was. It
was sixty years ago. Today we welcome you back here
for the third and final hour of the program. Here
on thirteen under the Zone, Craig Way alongside the producer
Jay Carman. That call, of course, it was the iconic
(59:52):
voice of Vin Scully, who passed away last year. And then,
of course, the longest serving play by play broad caster
or of any team in any sports sixty seven years
is the voice of the Dodgers, and sixty years ago
today in nineteen sixty five. September ninth, nineteen sixty five,
(01:00:15):
Sandykofax against the Chicago Cubs and the Dodgers beat the
Cubs one another thing. The Dodgers themselves only had one
hit that was a double, and they scored a run
without the benefit of a hit in the game. Bob Henley,
a young pitcher for the Cubs, they're a one hitter,
(01:00:37):
but the Dodgers won one nothing of the Sandy Cofax's
fourth career no hitter and a perfect game there on
September nine, nineteen sixty five. The start comparisons are back
then the Dodgers, who were in a real fight with
the Giants for the pennant, were really struggling to hit
(01:00:58):
the baseball, and like I said, they won one nothing
on them. Sixty years later, the Dodgers are in first
place but are struggling to hit the baseball. And last
night Tyler Glasnow carried a no hitter through seven innings
(01:01:19):
and the Dodgers were actually down one nothing. He had
a no hitter going, but the the Rocky scored a
run without a hit in the third inning, a lead
off walk, steal, a stolen base, and back to back
fly ball out sacrifice fly scored a run. They were
up one nothing. Dodgers finally managed to break through in
(01:01:42):
the bottom of the seventh, the score three runs, and
then they had to hold on and the no hitter
went into the ninth. Would have been a combined no hitter,
but for a double in the ninth off Lake trying
to and the Dodgers got to win. It's also interesting
to note, I don't know if it might have been
lost with everything that happened over the weekend in football,
(01:02:02):
both college football and pro football, that the Yoshinobu Yamamoto
carried a no hitter into the ninth in Baltimore with
the Dodgers up three to nothing, got one out of way,
got two strikes away, gave up a home run to
Jackson Holiday, so he lost a no hitter. Manager Dave
(01:02:23):
Roberts pulls him from the game. He was at like
one hundred and four, one hundred and twelve pitches, pulls
him from the game and goes to the bullpen, and
the bullpen completely collapses, and it was Blake Trinon who
had come out of the pen. He allowed walk a hit,
a hit, batter walked in a run, they pulled him out.
Tanner Scott comes in and gives up a bloop single,
(01:02:45):
two run score in the Earth. It was a disaster
on Saturday, and it was Tanner Scott, by the way,
allowed the double in the night, but he ended up
getting to save the Dodgers got to win last night. So,
but it's almost to the day of Sandy Cofax's fourth
career no hitter, a perfect game nineteen sixty five, sixty
years ago. Today, fast forward sixty years and we're talking
(01:03:06):
college football and arch Manning. Of course, he's Archie's grandson.
Archie wasn't even playing college football yet at Ole Miss
in nineteen sixty five. He didn't get there till nineteen
sixty eight or sixty seven. But arch playing college football
now and coming off the performance on Saturday, meeting with
the media yesterday, and one of the things he was
(01:03:30):
asked asked was two weeks in the books now, a
better performance obviously in game two than game one, But
what was his evaluation, especially on the areas where he
felt he needed improvement.
Speaker 5 (01:03:43):
Yeah, just starting faster, be consistent throughout the game, and
you know, getting the ball of my playmakers.
Speaker 1 (01:03:50):
Right, that's one thing. He does say that having older
teammates certainly helps.
Speaker 5 (01:03:55):
It's weird because we have a young team and then
you got these special teams guys that are seem like
they're forty years old. So it's I guess it's pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (01:04:04):
Yeah. Those older teammates include the specialists, the deep snapper
Lancet Lewis, the punter Jack Bowmeister who's twenty six, and
the kicker Mason Shipley transferred in from Texas State. They're
all married and so they've all got some age on him.
He was asked about Shipley, and you know, Shipley hit
(01:04:25):
a forty seven yard field goal, He's hit a sixty before.
But he was asked about Mason Shipley's contribution.
Speaker 4 (01:04:30):
So sweet.
Speaker 1 (01:04:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:04:31):
Yeah, he's a baller, he's a gamer for sure. That
was good to have points on the board and I'm
glad to have him on our team.
Speaker 1 (01:04:36):
All right, So that worked out, But now it's about
them improving themselves.
Speaker 5 (01:04:40):
Yeah, we just got to play better, play our brand football.
This week's about us and executing all three phases.
Speaker 1 (01:04:46):
You know, one thing that folks are really fascinated by
is his roommate chemistry and his roommate is Parker Livingston
who he hit with the eighty three yard touchdown pass
and a three yard touchdown. So is some of the
special roommate chemistry happening here?
Speaker 5 (01:05:02):
Yeah, I think that definitely helps. Just I can tell
him extra stuff, he can tell me what he thinks.
We don't always have to be at the facility to
have those discussions. Whenever on board throw him a few balls,
So it's definitely a definitely a plus. We didn't have
any room for Jack. We already have six guys. Yeah,
I think we would have. We would have had him,
but we didn't have any room for Jack.
Speaker 3 (01:05:24):
Injuries to be in there, no couch space.
Speaker 1 (01:05:27):
Yeah, just wasn't going to work right there. Malachi Nelson
is the quarterback for UTEP. You heard, if you missed it,
the first hour of the program we visited with John
Tyscher to play by playvoice of the UTEP miners. You
can hear it on our podcast page. Nelson, of course,
uh top rated recruit right there with large banding. When
they were both coming in and Nelson started at US,
he didn't play there, then went to Boys, he didn't
(01:05:49):
play there, transferred in to UTEP, and he's asked for
his thoughts in his contact with Malachi Nelson.
Speaker 5 (01:05:57):
No, not much. I think I've texted him a few times.
But he's a really good player, a lot of arm talent.
So excited to see what he can do and wish
him best of luck rest of the way.
Speaker 1 (01:06:07):
Arch is also excited about the growth and the chemistry
of the offensive line.
Speaker 5 (01:06:11):
Yeah, we got a lot of moving parts, a lot
of people have played. Just got to continue to grow
and get better. I though they've looked pretty good so far.
Just got to continue to get better each week.
Speaker 1 (01:06:19):
One thing that quarterbacks are always asked about is the
rate of checkdowns going to a second or a third
option as opposed to the leading target. And Arch was
asked about that sort of thing, the balance of pushing
the ball down the field versus the checkdowns.
Speaker 5 (01:06:36):
Yeah, I think we're gonna have shots, and you just
got to be mature and take them when they're there,
and be mature to take the checkdown. You know, Arts
continued to grow in that area of my game.
Speaker 1 (01:06:46):
Arch talks quite a bit about growth and learning. So
what were the things he was able to learn from
that San Jose State game?
Speaker 5 (01:06:53):
Yeah, you know, each week it's a new scheme, new stuff,
and I think San Jose they played really hard and
had a bunch of different pressure and I credit their
coaching and their players.
Speaker 1 (01:07:02):
So if he had a part of his game that
he felt was most improved, what would it be.
Speaker 5 (01:07:08):
I thought it a little bit better job just playing ball,
making players having fun out there. I'm just got to
continue to do that and be efficient.
Speaker 1 (01:07:15):
Back to that roommate thing, you know, Parker Livingston showed
some wheels out there, some speed. Was he aware of
just how fast Parker was? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (01:07:27):
I hope he keeps catching touchdowns. He's a really good player.
Good dude, love his family, so I'm excited for him.
Speaker 1 (01:07:35):
Arch talks about watching a lot of film. That whole
family is big on film Steady, So when does what
does he see and when does he get to watch it?
Speaker 5 (01:07:43):
I would see like some of the highlights that people
showed me, but I didn't watch anything till the next day.
Watch other games, but nothing that day. I kind of
enjoyed it. He only get so many eleven o'clock games,
so I enjoyed it with the family and friends.
Speaker 1 (01:07:55):
Yeah, we asked him on the post game, what are
you gonna do with an open Saturday night, he said,
did or with the fam hang out with the family
a little bit because it's an eleven am game. Kickoff
will actually be I think at three twenty will be
the exact foot to ball kickoff time for the game
this Saturday against you Tap. And of course our coverage
(01:08:15):
will begin at noon here on thirteen under the Zone
with long Orange game day from the hook them hangout
there Bevo Boulevard. They're at the winship circle with Cameron Parker,
Mike Cardball, Harge and Mark Henry and then of course
the network pregame at two, the kickoff closer to about
three twenty. More from March banding the you know the
(01:08:39):
old thing about explosive plays. It used to be twelve
yard runs, sixteen yard pass. It might have been pushed
back a little bit too. I think fourteen yard runs
and eighteen yard about whatever it might be. But he's
asked about trying to come up with more explosive plays downfield.
Speaker 5 (01:08:57):
Yeah, I think we were twenty percent on I supposed
to plays, which is what we want to be, or higher.
But uh, I think there's opportunities to have more. We
got some called back, so he just got to keep
continuing in to create explosive plays.
Speaker 1 (01:09:08):
All right, So is there anything new that he's been
able to find out through two weeks.
Speaker 5 (01:09:12):
Yeah, I realize that we have a lot of talent
and a lot of potential, but we got to continue
to get better and be more disciplined. But you know,
it's a long season. We're gonna keep improving.
Speaker 4 (01:09:21):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:09:22):
One of the elements that's talked about, or one of
the themes, seems to be the sluggish start right now
for Ryan Wingo, of who much has been projected and
is expected. Arch however, is not really worried about what
Ryan Wingo is trying to He says, Ryan's gonna be
just fine.
Speaker 5 (01:09:40):
Yeah, Ryan's a really good player and he's gonna make
a lot of plays for us the season. I'm not
worried about a drop. He's good on player. I tell him, Look,
I don't care, no one cares. Let's keep going and
he's going to do just that. Just that's the type
of player he is.
Speaker 1 (01:09:53):
And for offensive success, there's a lot of trust that
has to go into it.
Speaker 5 (01:09:57):
Yeah, I think we got to own and trust the
game plan and trust everyone needs to do their one
and eleventh and Obviously that falls on me to eliminate
the priestyle penalties and the procedural stuff. But just continue
to grow and trust game plan and then once you're
out there, just playball.
Speaker 1 (01:10:12):
You know what else? Arch can put on his shoulders
or rather below the waist his feet using his legs,
like on that touchdown run.
Speaker 5 (01:10:21):
Yeah, I mean, I feel like that's part of my game.
I want to continue to grow out is just making plays.
That's what I've done my whole life is when stuff's
not there, run around and make plays where it's throwing
or running.
Speaker 1 (01:10:32):
So I'm not going to stop doing that, and he's
not going to stop enjoying it. Especially after victories.
Speaker 5 (01:10:38):
I felt good. I felt good, son, I felt way
better than last week. So I guess it's better when
you win too.
Speaker 1 (01:10:44):
Yeah. Sure is now about that twenty yard touchdown run.
Folks asked him if they evoked images of it, Not
his dad, not his uncles, but his grandfather. Because Archie
Manning could use his functional mobility to move around in
the pocket, didn't take off and run.
Speaker 5 (01:11:01):
Series a hell of a job blocking, so I just
figured still get six. Yeah, he had some good runs
like that. He ran all over the place he did.
Speaker 2 (01:11:12):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:11:13):
Then came a question that I asked him because remember
this was yesterday, and you know, the first Manning cast
of the season with his uncles Peyton and Eli was
up last night for that Vikings Bears games. It's highly
entertaining television, and so I was just kind of curious
as to whether he planned to watch it. They're on tonight.
Speaker 5 (01:11:36):
Huh, yeah, I'll probably watch for a little bit. Yeah,
Payton was out the game. I talked to him after
he was fired up. No, no invite. I don't think
I'm gonna stay away from that r now. Yeah, I
know Marshall's Marsh's getting all the screen time. He's gonna
be a good player, opportunity. Yeah, less screen time, less
(01:11:58):
media is always best.
Speaker 1 (01:12:00):
Yeah, you could rather stay away from that. But he
was asked, hey, have you been asked to be on
the show yet?
Speaker 6 (01:12:05):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:12:05):
No, And Marshall his cousin, of course, is Peyton's son,
who is a budding football play right now and getting
better by the day. And find me one other thing
from Arch Banning talking about the leadership that happens within
the offensive line and what they need to do to
help eliminate the false starts and the pre staff penalties.
Speaker 5 (01:12:25):
Yeah, no, I think I need a step up. I
did at the end of the game kind of my
last drive in, but I think I need to continue
that because I think when players coaching players it always
works better because you get a lot from the coaches.
So whenever players step up in leadership roles, it helps out.
Speaker 1 (01:12:41):
Yeah, all right, So there you go. Thoughts and comments
from Arch banning up next, Thoughts and comments from the
head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Ryan Schottenheimer again will
offer up to you our text line. This was something
we talked about very early in the program. I had
an item in Inconceivable about the twelve. I didn't know
(01:13:06):
there were twelve. There were twelve varieties of Captain Crunch
cereal that were ranked from number twelve, the worst one
all the way down to number one. Number one wound
up being Captain Crunch with crunch Berries. But I said,
if you had one cereal, to pick only one that
you could have whenever, you would have cereal for the
(01:13:27):
rest of your days. What would it be. For the
producer Jay Herman, it was frosted miniweeds. For myself, my
personal favorite cocoa crispies. We heard from the world's strongest man,
Mark Henry. He liked cinnamon Toa's crunch and Golden Grams.
I think I like both. They're very similar to the two.
Like both of those. So if you want to do that,
(01:13:48):
you can text us. You know that we've had Lucky Charms,
fruit loops, neutral grain, almond rays, Okay, raisin brand our NCB,
like honeynut cheerios and frosted flakes. And if somebody so
I think, very astutely put it, you can't really love
(01:14:11):
and he put love and big capital letters any cereal
unless you to eat a bowl with no milk and
sometimes actually prefer it. No problem having a bowl of
dry fruit loops for dessert in the evening.
Speaker 3 (01:14:22):
You don't know what you have in your quarterback, so
you need a fourth quarter touchdown.
Speaker 1 (01:14:25):
Yeah, well you know. And my wife, like I said,
she stays away from them, but if it was it
would be like he Charms, which she would prefer to eat,
as she said, out of the box and not in
a bowl with milk. She said. That's when you know
you got to stay away from it. So just buy
and large for that. I like cocoa Christis's gonna got
(01:14:47):
a bowl of cholate milk when you get done with
it at the end of it. All right, coming up next,
we're here from Brian Schottenheimer. Here on this Tuesday afternoon,
I'm thirteen under the zone. You and I can just
sit here and listen to that entire song. That's my
favorite George strait So of all time.
Speaker 3 (01:15:01):
Oh, that's awesome.
Speaker 1 (01:15:02):
And Marilla by morning.
Speaker 3 (01:15:04):
Got to see him once. Lucky me.
Speaker 1 (01:15:06):
Yeah, I've seen him twice. Enjoyed it both times very much.
And the King, you know, just about the life of
a nomadic cowboy that's had about every bone in his
body broken and all these God has his clothes on
his back and his saddle, and he's lost a wife
and a girlfriend along the way, but the rodeo continues
to call him. Yeah. I know some people who had
(01:15:30):
been through similar types of things, not in rodeo, but
in other lines of work in their lives and stuff
like that, including broadcasting as well. It's why I count
myself lucky with what I have. We continue here on
thirteen hundred the Zone. A couple of NFL notes. One
they thought this was going to happen, and it's happened
(01:15:50):
more than they thought. There has been a dramatic increase
in kickoff returns right through one week of the NFL.
You know, it's the first slate of regular season games
since the touchback was moved to the thirty five yard line.
Bring it out, so kickers have gotten better about hitting
the target zone. Getting it in the target area. Teams
(01:16:14):
have returned one hundred and eighteen of one hundred and
fifty six kickoffs. That's a seventy six percent return rate.
The last time they had a higher return rate for
a single week was the final week of the twenty
ten season, and the last time they had a higher
return rate than fifty percent in the first week also
was twenty ten.
Speaker 2 (01:16:35):
And a big return last night for Ty Chandler of
the Vikings had to bring it out to get the
clock to the two minute warning, which turned out to
be a big play in that ball game.
Speaker 1 (01:16:44):
Okay, let me ask you something. Because you were watching
the regular standard at ESPN telecast with Joe Buck and
Troy Aikman, who I think to do a fine job.
You were watching that right, yep. I was watching the
Manning cast, hey, because they're entertaining and all that and
Linda really likes watching that as well. So we were
watching that. The Manning boys were all over that before
(01:17:09):
it happened, saying they got to In fact, Peyton was saying,
if I'm the Bears, I kick it out of bounds.
And Peyton said, and then Eli said, well maybe that's
what they were trying to do. I kick it out
of the back of the end zone. He said, I
would kick it out of bounds. Just kick it out
of bounce. What you don't want is a return that
takes an inside of the two minute warnings, so you
(01:17:29):
lose that stop. And so we're buckan Aikman on that
as well.
Speaker 2 (01:17:32):
They were, Yeah, you want no chance of missing it
one yard short, nine yards deep in the end zone, right, Yeah,
what matters are the forty five seconds that you lose.
Speaker 1 (01:17:42):
Absolutely so. And then the smarts by Kevin O'Connell, the
Vikings coach, waving bring it out, bring it out, bring
it out. And how about the look on the face,
who is it to get returned to? Ty Chandler? Yeah,
tych Chandler looking to the sideline. You want me to
bring it, bring it out, bringing out? So he did,
(01:18:02):
he brought it out, so that's coaching, and that was
that was smart to bring it out because it left
at the Bears with only one time out, and the
Vikings ended up winning that ballgame and come from behind
fashion twenty seven to twenty four. All right, with regard
to the Cowboys, a couple of things. One just didn't
(01:18:25):
have anything to do with the Cowboys except in ancillary reference.
Michael Parsons now with the Packers. He played twenty nine
snaps and coach Matt Lafleur said that was more than
he anticipated, and he said, how to investigate that? But
Parsons said he eventually talked his way in to a
bigger role in that game. He was still on the
(01:18:48):
field late in the fourth quarter when he got his
first sack as a Packer. He had three quarterback pressures,
one of which led to an interception. So he wanted more.
He wanted more, and he might get He's going to
continue to get more. It's gonna be interesting to watch
as the Packers give him more and feed more into him.
And then finally, one other thing before we get on
(01:19:10):
to hearing from Ryan Schottenheimer, we know the Cowboys season
opener ended in defeed a very competitive game they lost
twenty four to twenty to the Eagles, And it was
noteworthy also for Jalen Carter being ejected before the game
even kicked off for spitting on Dak Prescott. And so
the thing that came out he was immediately ejected, and
(01:19:30):
it was, Oh, he's going to get suspended, He's gonna
get fined. It's gonna be this because that NFL announced
today that since he was ejected from the game without
participating in a single play, the league will consider that
as having served a one game suspension.
Speaker 2 (01:19:47):
Do you think the context of Dak spitting on the
ground in front of Jalen Carter may have contributed to
that decision?
Speaker 5 (01:19:55):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (01:19:55):
Maybe maybe. Yeah, So it's a pretty important distinction about
the NFL. So they're establishing a precedent and sending a
message that's spitting on an opponent's going to bring about
a one game suspension. But since the game that not
kicked off, there's your one game. You do it during
a game, you're going to sit out the next game
(01:20:17):
in all probability like targeting, yeah, yeah, second half targeting, anyway,
that kind of thing. He's going to forfeit a game
one a week, one game check fifty seven twenty two dollars.
Speaker 3 (01:20:29):
Is that game check, by the way, I've been making
a lot more in a few years.
Speaker 1 (01:20:33):
Yeah, but he is going to be able to play
this week when he goes play. The Chiefs Players Association
said Carter waved his right to appeal the punishment so
that he said he was already what's done is done.
He's already been thrown out, So you appeal, it doesn't
mean just getting the money die. You're gonna let him
play an extra game? Yeah, yeah, right, I think it'd
be just appealing so he could get his game check back.
(01:20:55):
But he considered it a closed subject as as the NFL,
So everybody moves on from there. Cowboys are moving on
to get ready for the New York Giants, and Marian
Schottenneimer was asked at his news conference, and they had
a little extra time off since they played on Thursday night,
So about the process of getting ready for the matchup
(01:21:17):
with the Giants. Guys are in to day. We watched
the review of the Eagles game.
Speaker 7 (01:21:22):
You know, it's it's always a little harder to do
it three days after because you'd rather do it the
day after when it's fresh but just pointed out the
good things we did well, things we need to do better,
and then how we're gonna do that, and then take
a little lunch break, which we're on now, and then
do the Giants intro.
Speaker 1 (01:21:38):
So yeah, we never changed. Our process always stays the same.
This was this was yesterday the press conference. They already
talked about it and they had that and he had
the lunch break. You said, we're gonna have a little
lunch and remind me of the Rex Ryan Let's go
eat a bleep bleep snap when he said that when
when Hard Knocks was on there. So yeah, that's their process.
(01:22:04):
It almost sounds a little bit like what Sartin does
with the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Said, you
showed him some good things and some things we need
to work on. It's kind of like that good, the Bad,
and the Ugly video session that Sark has every Monday
with the team.
Speaker 4 (01:22:17):
Sure.
Speaker 3 (01:22:17):
I feel like for Dallas last week it was a
lot of in between.
Speaker 1 (01:22:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:22:21):
Yeah, there was some good and some good, not a
lot of great and not a lot of terrible.
Speaker 1 (01:22:26):
He was also asked about this, this gets kind of apocryphal,
and I'm talking about that twenty four hour rule. Players
talk about it, coaches talk about it, no matter the sport.
I've heard coaches in basketball talk about it, baseball about
you have twenty four hours to process it, to get
it out of your system. Well, Shatner Schottenheimer has a
(01:22:47):
slightly different take on it, based on his family coaching
tree history. Well, the rule I abide by is the
midnight rule.
Speaker 7 (01:22:56):
That's I'm already shot Nhmer rule midnight, and we didn't
get done to playing until I think after midnight.
Speaker 1 (01:23:02):
So, but his thing was always how you play the game.
Speaker 7 (01:23:05):
You have till midnight to feel sorry for yourself or
be excited, and then once midnight hits at twelve oh one,
you move on to the next opponent because there's another
great team coming in, you know, sitting around watching football yesterday,
you know, Calvin, I mean, the league is exactly where
they want to be, you know, very good football teams,
very close games, and the parody is real.
Speaker 1 (01:23:27):
So I really do believe that's important. This one carries
over a little.
Speaker 7 (01:23:31):
Bit just because of the fact that, again the league
mandates you give the guys a couple of days off,
so you had to touch on today we don't shy
away from having hard conversations or celebrating big wins.
Speaker 1 (01:23:42):
You Like I said, the process is always the same, yeah,
Marty Schottenheimer. Of course, Pops was the one who had
that midnight rule thing in his days of coaching the
Browns and the Chargers. He was a player in the
air AFL Hall of Famer, So good sage advice there.
How about his thoughts on his offensive line matching up
(01:24:03):
with the Giants impressive defensive front. This is an incredible
front coming in here.
Speaker 7 (01:24:09):
They've obviously added you know, Abdul Carter, high draft pick,
good player, but with you know Dexter inside and Burns
and Thibodeau and you know big Bobby Okarek fan. I
think he's a hell of a football player. But I
was proud of the guys. Last game again, wasn't perfect,
you know, but we played physical. That was a big
(01:24:31):
thing that jumped off the film even watching again with
the players this morning, was how physical this football team played.
And I think if we play as physical as we
did the other night, we played with the discipline that
we had the other night, then I think we'll feel
good going into most weeks that we'll find a.
Speaker 1 (01:24:46):
Way to get a victory. Okay, all right, So now
it's about getting ready for the Giants on the offensive
side as well. Russell Wilson was the quarterback last week.
At his press conference yesterday, Brian Dable, the head coach,
said Russ is still the guy. However, word leaked out
(01:25:06):
later that Dave Ball was having conversations with Giants management
about putting Jackson Dart, the rookie from Ole Miss in there.
So Schott Enneimers asked, what is he think? Do he
prepare for two quarterbacks? Do you how do you go
about getting prep ready on this deal?
Speaker 7 (01:25:24):
Obviously I know Russ very well, won a lot of
games together in Seattle.
Speaker 1 (01:25:29):
Can't wait to see him.
Speaker 7 (01:25:30):
And then of course there's a video of Jackson from
college in the preseason.
Speaker 1 (01:25:35):
Supposed he played great in the preseason. I didn't.
Speaker 7 (01:25:37):
I didn't see that. So we'll be ready for both
of them. But again we're just starting our prep and
again we'll see how they how they play.
Speaker 1 (01:25:47):
Supposedly they're going to have a package for Jackson. Yesterday. Anyways,
all right, in getting prepared for that Giants defense, the
passing game for the Cowboys showed I think it was
something like thirteen targets for CD Lamb and four for
George Pickens in the game. Those of us who have
(01:26:09):
Pickens on their fantasy teams, which there had been more.
Speaker 2 (01:26:13):
But Pickens Pickens fantasy managers are no strangers to all
the PI yards he gets, which are great for your
real life football team.
Speaker 3 (01:26:22):
Yeah, don't do anything nothing.
Speaker 1 (01:26:24):
It doesn't help me have one bit on the fantasy
But anyway, shot He was asked about Lamb and Pickens
and the discrepancy in the game plan, and he said, well,
it's not like it's planned that way. Well, it's funny,
and I didn't have it with George.
Speaker 7 (01:26:40):
I should have probably had it with George, but I
showed CD before the game all of his targets. So
on the back of your call sheet, you've got to
get the ball to certain people, and like it was
like this in case CD, you look at all your
targets and.
Speaker 1 (01:26:53):
Then literally George's was right below him. I was like, Okay,
then look at all the George's targets.
Speaker 7 (01:26:57):
So it's like, obviously, the way we're designing the game
plan is to feature your playmakers. And it's uh, it's
very evident that those two guys are elite players. I
think that's why Vic and those guys played us the
way they did. That's why I think the running game
is so important, because I think we're going to see
quite a bit of split safety or shell coverage because
they're going to respect our guys on the outside because
(01:27:20):
if you play them one on one, you know the
defense is at a disadvantage. So again, it's more of
them just knowing, Hey, we see you, we know you're
a great player. We're gonna try to get to the
ball as much as possible. But like I've always said,
there's only one ball to go around, and a lot
of it is. Again, the two of them have such
a great relationship that George was happy for CD with
his production, and guess what this week, when it flips,
(01:27:42):
CD will be happy.
Speaker 1 (01:27:43):
For for George and vice versa. Hey, I hope it flips.
Speaker 3 (01:27:49):
Maybe pickens big, maybe you'll trade him in the middle
of the game this week.
Speaker 1 (01:27:52):
Yeah, I'm actually gonna play for team defense and gonna
play the Cowboys defense too, because my other team defense
is the Eagles and they're playing the.
Speaker 3 (01:28:00):
You're going up against Dart that you hope to see
Dart or Wilson.
Speaker 1 (01:28:04):
I hope to see not much offensive production out of
the Giants fair enough by whatever means. And then finally
speaking of the quarterbacks, he was asked for more detail
analysis of Russell Wilson, and the reason why is you
heard Shottenheimer make reference to the fact that the two
were together in Seattle, so he knows him very, very
very well from his time there. He was asked for
(01:28:26):
his analysis of Russell Wilson.
Speaker 7 (01:28:28):
One of the greatest deep ball throwers I've ever been around.
This guy's ability to just drop the ball in the
bucket and put the perfect amount of air to the
receiver that it was intended to.
Speaker 1 (01:28:38):
What do I mean by that?
Speaker 7 (01:28:39):
Like Tyler Lockett was a four to two five guy,
probably still runs pretty damn fast, so he would put
a little bit more air up underneath it and let
Tyler go track it where's dk He would throw it
a little bit flatter, but it didn't matter who he
was throwing it to. He just was probably one of
the best deep ball throwers I've ever been around. The
ability to extend plays when I was with him was incredible.
Speaker 4 (01:29:04):
You know.
Speaker 7 (01:29:05):
He just was a great improviser, And that's that's what
our games become. I mean, our game is, you know,
sitting around, you know, watching the games last night, watching
Lamar and Josh play man.
Speaker 1 (01:29:14):
It's like, if you can't move around and.
Speaker 7 (01:29:16):
Make plays in this league, you know, it's uh, it's
it's your your outgunned a little bit.
Speaker 1 (01:29:21):
So those are the first two things that pop out.
Speaker 7 (01:29:25):
Excited to see Russ, I'm actually mad. I got to
reach out to him because Tad over here, my man, Tad,
he's got on. More So, Russ has a shoe brand
called good Man. It's a clothing line, and Tad's got
like nine pair. Show him off, Ted. So Russ, if
you see this, I'm losing to Tad, So please send
some good Man shoes. I'm happy to pay, but it'd
(01:29:47):
be great to see him.
Speaker 1 (01:29:48):
Yeah, okay, who knew shoes?
Speaker 4 (01:29:51):
Right?
Speaker 1 (01:29:51):
All right? We have more coming up here on thirteen
under the Zone.
