Speaker 1 (00:00):
Football Friday on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
I am Andrew Zimmel, filling in for the legendary Craig Way.
Craig is in Brooklyn, New York as the Texas Longhorns
get ready to take on St. Joseph's Saint Joe's tonight
eight thirty tip off eight pm. Pregame right here on

(00:24):
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone and on Cavid FM,
as well as well as on the Longhorn Radio Network.
Later in the show final hour of The Craigway Show,
we hear from Sark and Mark Stoops as we get
you ready for Kentucky and Texas two thirty pm kick
You don't want to miss Longhorn game day though. Eleven
thirty AM. It's Cameron Parker, Mike Harball, Harge and the

(00:48):
world's strongest man Mark Henry. That is right as they
get you ready for Longhorns football. That's tomorrow's Sports Radio
AM thirteen hundred Zone and the free radio app is
your place for that. As well as Dan Mullen, former
coach of the Florida Gators. He gives a very interesting
take on the Big ten and can we knock off

(01:11):
two teams this weekend. We'll see if that happens. But
we got to talk about one. Aaron Judge. So the
New York Yankees have had a storied, storied history. And
I'm doing this because it's it is The Craig Way Show,
and it wouldn't feel right if I didn't give Aaron
Judge and Sho Heo Tani the love that they deserve.

(01:31):
Because Shoeotani is on the team that just won the
World Series, it's also happens to be the team that
Craig Way roots for. I don't know how he has
time to watch as many baseball games as he does,
but he calls Texas Longhorn baseball as well as just
everything else that he does. But he finds time to
have a favorite baseball team as well. My favorite team

(01:55):
is the New York Yankees. So when I saw the
Aaron Judge and Showhy both win the MVP, I wasn't surprised,
but I was. I felt like we were kindred spirits.
I was telling Ronald earlier when Craig was on the
show in the last segment. If you missed it, you
can go back and listen to the podcast version of it.
Craig cames on the show. He's always great. I love

(02:18):
filling in for Craig way any chance I get to
fill in for him, I am over the moon. But
there's a generational divide between Craig and Mark Henry and
Mike Carge and myself. We agree on a ton between
the four of us, but I feel like there's sometimes
where we're almost lined up exactly and then there's a

(02:38):
zag or a zig and I just happened to be
the zim and all that we were so close on
agreeing on the college football playoffs. We're so close. But anyway,
so Shoho Tani. He's the UNIANIYMSS MVP. After winning the
sweepstakes to get him, the LA Dodgers got one of
the best seasons in the history of baseball, a fifty

(02:59):
four home run season with fifty nine stolen bases, something
has never been done before. Otani becomes the twelfth player
to win three MVPs, and the second to do it
with in seven seasons. He joins one stan Usual. He
also joins one other player to win an MVP in
the National League and the American League. It's one of

(03:21):
the greatest hitters of all time. Frank Robinson. But I
thought that the Aaron Judge winning of the MVP really
solidified him in a very special class. Now this is
Aaron Judge. After winning his MVP award yesterday, he did
an interview with Sports Center at six. Do you have

(03:43):
it the cut here, Khalil, It's number twelve?

Speaker 2 (03:46):
An incredible honor. You know, I definitely wouldn't wouldn't be
here without my family, my wife. You know, God forgive
me this opportunity. My teammates throughout the whole season, you know,
pushing me, motivating me, being there. For me, it's just
a lot of emotions and just pretty excited.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
So how do you sort of compare your production compared
to twenty twenty two?

Speaker 2 (04:06):
For me, the game is all about scoring runs. You know,
you drive more runs and you give up, you're gonna
win a lot of ball games. So, you know, for me,
it's always about RBI's, you know, that's how you win
ball games. And you know, getting a chance to hit
behind Juan Soto, you know, Glaber tours there at the
end of the year, those guys around base constantly.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
I like that he kind of slipped in there. The
Juant Sodo part of it because the Yankees are still
very much trying to bring Sodo back. It's between them,
the Mets and the Dodgers at this point. I would
think that that shout out maybe helps Aaron Judge, maybe
Tex Soda on the side. Hey, you see that shouty
on my MVP speech. Judge led the majors and home
runs with fifty eight, RBIs with one forty four, and

(04:44):
on base percentage with one one five nine, which is
absolutely incredible, and his wins over replacement eleven point two
was outstanding. He joins only Babe Ruth and Barry Bonds
to have fifty home runs and adjusted ops two hundred
to more. All that cool nerves stuff is fine. Here's
what you care about. He's only the seventh Yankee to

(05:06):
win multiple MVPs. We did this earlier in the morning.
Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Alex Rodriguez, Roger Marris.
Only two of those guys are not Hall of famers.
It's a Rod because of the Royds. It's Roger Marris
because for whatever reason, people aren't giving him the credit
that he deserves. Before Judge Mantle, his nineteen fifty six

(05:28):
season was the only one in Yankee history to yield
a unanimous MVP vote. He also joins Luke Errig and
Thurman Munson as the only two Yankee captains to win
the MVP while being the captain of said Yankees. By far,
the only thing missing from his resume is that elusive

(05:53):
World Series ring. And at the end of the day,
we were arguing this morning about it. At the end
of the day, all those guys have their numbers retired
in some way or another. When you talk about bearra
and when we talk about Mantle and you talk about DiMaggio,
all those guys are cemented in pinstripe in Yankee lore.

(06:14):
Those are the guys we talk about the pride of
the Yankees. Aaron Judge is this close, this close to
joining that group. In fact, if you take away the
entire season, if you stripped it down, this is the
when he needed after the World Series that he had

(06:36):
because that World Series performance was a stinker for the Ages.
In fact, that fifth Inning era error. I know, we
talked about it after the World Series, and you know,
Craig was like, well, you know, it's just not one play.
I understand that I can get behind that. It's not
just one play. But Yankees fans don't get behind that. Okay,

(06:57):
I can't because I'm a rational individual and enough time
has passed in the moment I was like that cost
us the World Series and winning the MVP is great,
and it's a win that he deserves because he had
the type of season that he had. But don't get
it fooled. This only adds pressure to Aaron Judge in

(07:19):
the New York Yankees because now he is the most
accomplished Yankee without a World Series ring. Now he joins
a group of guys who are the group you never
want to be in with. He joins the Charles Barclays
and the Karl Malones and the Barry Bonds of the

(07:41):
world who don't have that championship ring, who don't have
that elusive World Series title. And it's weird because, you know,
baseball never really was the sport that we looked at
when we compared home run numbers and RBIs and all
the other statistical numbers. We didn't really care that much
about the rings until very recently. But you have to

(08:03):
go with what you're being judged on, and winning the
World Series is the end all be all. Currently and
if Aaron, the Yankees are still gonna be very good.
You hope that they bring Sodo back if you're a
Yankee fan, But they're a very good team. Aaron Judge
needs to be so great that he makes them a
great team, and the unanimous MVP, you kind of expect

(08:26):
him to do that, showing Otani completely the other story.
His team wins the World Series, he doesn't even pitch
this year, and he wins the MVP unanimously. He is
at the precipice of being the greatest player of all time.
He is the only Japanese American player to win an MVP.
He becomes the first DH in both leagues to win

(08:47):
to win value over Replacement and joins Tai Kava is
the only player to finish within the top two in
the majors in both homers and steals. Yeah, Otani is
a special breed. When we come back, we will continue
the Craig Way Show here from Steve Starkeisian and Mark
Stoops as we get ready for Texas Longhorn football this
summer or Saturday two thirty kickoff one thirty Network pregame

(09:12):
right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone and
Andrews and will filling in for Craigway next. On Sports
