Speaker 1 (00:02):
We're back.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
and voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
Well, here's hoping your Monday afternoon is going all right.
I know for many that means the start of a
new work week, and I hope that that's going okay
for you. For those of you who are already in
the car headed out, good glad that And for those
of you listening in the workplace, glad you're alongside as well.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Glad to have you with us as well.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
The Olympics may be over, but the conversation isn't, and
not just because of the controversy surrounding the bronze medal
awarded in the women's floor exercise, which we'll get to
in a moment if you needed any further. And I
know most of the people who listen to this program

(00:59):
are pretty astute when it comes to the sport landscape.
And what I mean by that is there are many
of you who listen to this program and or listen
to long run football games and or basketball games or
baseball games whenever, who may watch the Cowboys or the

(01:23):
rest of the NFL, who understand fully that if you're
watching highlights on Sports Center, which is the main reason
that I watch Sports Center when I do, is I'm
looking for highlights of games and the stories that go

(01:46):
on what I'm really not interested in.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
But I know there are those who are. There's enough
of them who are.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
I'm not interested in understanding or at least knowing, who
are the best favorites according to ESPN bet. And they
made it a big part of Sports Center. And it's
understandable because a lot of people are into the wagering.
I would be naive if I were to think otherwise.
I know that, But I also know that a lot

(02:15):
of people who don't do a lot of sports betting,
you know, are watching mainly for the stories and stuff
like that. And I can't remember if I've even asked you.
You're not much of a sports wagerer, are you?

Speaker 1 (02:30):
No? No? You know who surprised me? Who is Eddie Orn? No?

Speaker 3 (02:37):
No, And I don't think he's allowed to by his profession,
I don't think. But you know who surprised me? Cold Dixon? Oh,
really cold Dixon? Who sits in that chair where Cameron sits.
Because I asked a similar question of last week and
he just kind of smiles, like look at you.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
He's like, so he's he's a.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
Little bit of one of those who goes beyond the
FEPO for interparent entertainment purposes. Only the reason why I
bring all this up is, and my goodness, if there
are those of you who actually bet on preseason NFL football,
god love you.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
I mean that's a that's high risk thing.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
Given who plays and more importantly, who does not play
in the NFL preseason. Uh several Longhorns did play game
seat Sam Ellinger had pretty good showing when he was
out there. Uh Saul to Andandre Sweat got a sack
we mentioned. Uh de marve On over shown got that
big drag down from Bond and he did he did

(03:39):
well when he in his time on the field. Iron
Murphy had had a big few plays when he was
going for the Seahawks. Uh So there were several ady
Mitchell called his first pass. So yeah, there were there
were several different Loghorns who stood out as well. But hey, listen,

(03:59):
good luck to you if you're betting on preseason football.
But I did notice today that ESPN bet was doing
updated changed odds, and according to ESPN Bet, the trend
they said with their two betting dudes was to bet

(04:21):
the under on Texas winning ten and a half games,
to go under that they would win ten or fewer games,
and said that early on it was like a good bet,
but now it's not so much good. And you have
to understand that they're doing that based on the action
that's coming in on both sides of the line, because
that's all the as Brent Musberger would say, friends in

(04:43):
the desert are interested in, is action on both sides
because they're going to win when they've got plenty of
action on both sides of the line, because only one
side can win unless you have a push on that
which brings us to this story. The United States was
a heavy betting favorite to win the most gold medals
at the Olympics, and it came down to the final

(05:07):
event and ended the tie. The US entered the Olympics
with minus six hundred odds to win more gold medals
than any other country at ESPN bet. China had the
second best odds at plus three fifty. The US women's
basketball team held off France by that one point. As
we talked about it, gave the Americans their fortieth gold medal,
and it tied them with China for the most of

(05:30):
the games. The US garnered approximately sixty four percent of
the money wagered on the gold medal market at ESPN Bet.
That's just ESPN Bet, That's not all the other wagering services.
Sportsbooks took various approaches to settling bets on the gold
medal market. ESPN Bet, DraftKings, and Fan Duel each settled

(05:54):
gold medal bets with what they called a dead heat rule,
generally meaning half the amount of the bet is paid
out at the odds offered. Bet MGM included a tiebreaker
in its gold medal betting rules and Dean the US
the winner due to winning more silver medals in China,
but sports books Prime Sports and South Point in Las

(06:15):
Vegas elected to pay bets on both the US and China,
although South Point sports book director Chris andrews acknowledge on
social media the amount bet on the market was relatively small.
Basketball the most popular event with betters at sports books
as well. The top five most heavily bet Olympic bets
were all basketball at Draft Kings and Caesar sports books,

(06:37):
with the US men's winever Serbia attracting more money wager
than any other bet, So there's there were some other
things there on that all right now.

Speaker 1 (06:48):
Of course, the.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
Other big thing discussed in the Olympics is what happened
with the bronze medal for the floor exercise, and you'll
remember what what happened initially on that where Jordan Chiles
was initially scored a thirteen point sixty sixty six on
her floor routine.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
That's a score that put.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
Her in fifth, just behind Romania's Anna Barbosu and Sabrina Vuyne,
who had a thirteen point seven. However, chiles coaches then
challenged the American gymnast difficulty score, and the challenge was granted.
The zero point one boost boosted her passed the other two.

(07:34):
In the third Barbosu, who had been celebrating her medal
with stun, Chiles got on the podium behind Rebecca's Brazil's
Rebecca Andrage who won the gold, and Simone Biles of
the US who took the silver. Then, in case you
didn't hear this over the weekend, on Saturday, the Court

(07:54):
of Arbitration for Sport ruled that the scoring inquiry was
submitted four seconds after the one minute deadline. To request
an inquiry had expired and therefore the requestion i'd have
been accepted. The Federation of International Gymnastics then changed the standings.

(08:15):
They put Barboso in third and the IOC then in
turn said it would contact the US Olympic Committee to
arrange for the medal's return and the reallocation to the Romanians.

Speaker 1 (08:26):
But the story is not done.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
USA Gymnastics came back late Saturday afternoon, went to social
media after saying it was devastated on what happened and
said that was wrong. Then they posted a message in
favor of Chiles, so.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
Then that happened.

Speaker 3 (08:47):
And then following that, the US came back yesterday and
said they have video evidence that shows that coach Cecil
Landy requested inside of the one minute video, they said
the time stamped video evidence. This was tweeted out by

(09:08):
USA Gymnastics. The time stamped video evidence submitted on Sunday
evening shows Landy first stated her request to file an
inquiry at the inquiry table forty seven seconds after the
score was posted, followed by a second statement fifty five
seconds after the score was originally posted. The video footage

(09:29):
was not available to USA Gymnastics prior to the tribun
Tribunal's decision, and thus USA Gymnastics did not have the
opportunity to previously submit it. So now they say they've
got full video evidence. So that has gone back to
the IOC and supposedly to the Court of Arbitration to

(09:52):
for further consideration to say you do not strip this
metal this bronze medal from Jordan Chiles. Jordan Chiles came
out this morning and said she's going off social media
for the betterment of her mental health.

Speaker 1 (10:08):
Same thing.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
Ati Barbrosu of Romania said she and the other Romanian
gymnasts also have been through the ringer on all this.
I don't know about you, Cameron. The general response, ranging
from things like my daughter, my wife, to our program
director Terry Fox to other people, was that everybody just

(10:31):
should just throw up their hands and say give them
both bronze battles.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
Are you in agree with them that? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (10:37):
I guess.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
So.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
The thing is like with gymnastics, I just don't understand
the sport enough to feel like I have a really
informed opinion, So I'll follow with the people who know
about this say, and that they're all saying give her
a metal back then, yeah, you know, go for it.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
Well, here's the thing.

Speaker 2 (10:53):
Which I know is the lame take. But I'm not
going to get up here in a soapbox and say, ah,
she she shouldn't deserve it.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
Whatever.

Speaker 3 (10:59):
Okay, all right, fair enough. Here's the other part of
the USA's perspective. It's not Jordan Chiles's fault or that
of Team USA's fault. That the judges screwed up the
judging thing by miscalculating the points that should have been

(11:21):
awarded due to the difficulty of the routines and in
a couple of the disciplines that we're inside of, it
should have been awarded and were not.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
In the moment.

Speaker 3 (11:30):
That was a mistake made on the part of the judges,
not on the part of the gymnast. So that's a
correctable error. And aside from Romania says, whether it was
a correctable error or not, it's kind of like instant
replay in football or baseball. If you don't throw the

(11:51):
red flag before the next play is snapped in football
or in baseball, you got thirty seconds and if the
time goes out, you don't get to ape it. Romania's
perspective is that's what happened. But the US has, It's
got video evans it shows that they appealed forty seven
seconds into it.

Speaker 1 (12:10):
So that's what they have to sort out.

Speaker 3 (12:14):
And I think part of the reason now why people
think they should just give them both bronze medals is
that that they've both been kind of jerked around by
all of this. Jordan Childs certainly has, and I think
Romania as as well. So why not just call them
co bronze medalists? It was point oh one of the difference. Anyway,
just give it, give them both the bronze and call

(12:35):
it a day. And by the way, give them a
bronze medal where the bronze doesn't flake off like it
did on the like the American bronze medal, whether that
we did the other day where it was falling off.
All right, Uh, we go to other topics that we'll
