Speaker 1 (00:00):
Filling in for Craig. If you want to follow me
on social media, it's at Andrew Underscore Zimmel on Twitter.
That's at Andrew Underscore Zimmele on Twitter. NBA Free Agency
continuing to roll along, and to the Indiana Pacers who
just played in a Game seven of the NBA Finals.
Did their window close already? We'll talk about that as
(00:23):
a Miles Turner decides to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks.
What does that mean for the Pacers? What I mean
for the Bucks going forward? Also, new documentary out are
coming out. I should say America's Team, The Gambler and
his Cowboys, focusing on Jerry Jones, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith,
Michael Irvin. Obviously it's coming out in August. They put
(00:46):
out the first teaser trailer. We'll play some of that
for you next or, like you say, later in the hour.
All coming up. It's going to be great. But I
want to start with college football because two big things happen. One,
Paul Finebaum was on Get Up this Morning. We'll hear
a little bit of him first, or we'll hear a
little bit from Paul Feinbaum later in the segment. But
I want to start here because my text Day Podcasts
(01:10):
and we had on the show last week when it
was still conjecture and rumor that the Bobcasts we're going
to join the PAC twelve. They officially made the join yesterday,
made the jump yesterday to the PAC twelve. They're going
to join Boise State, Colorado State, Washington, and Oregon State
in twenty twenty six. So this is the final season
of sun Beat Sunbelt football in San Marcus. And I
(01:33):
cannot tell you how excited I am. I wanted to
get that on the record here. Yesterday was a world
win obviously in San Marcus. The amount of media that
the president of the university and the athletic director had
to do was crazy. What we did a little bit
on the podcast Squaring Around you want to listen to it.
There we had a chance to talk to him. But
(01:54):
it is truly a new day in San Marcus. I
feel like I would be remiss not to mention that
that they finally joined the big boys. The Texas State
Bobcats are finally at the table with the rest of
college football. And now it's ironic because the PAC twelve
is no longer the PAC twelve. That we once knew
and cared about. It's not the Pac twelve that the
Long Ones were rumored at one point to be joining.
(02:16):
It's not the same PAC twelve. It's not the same
conference with champions. But I have to give them a
little bit of credit that they joined a conference that matters.
They join a conference that people in Middle America know.
And I had people yesterday texted me I haven't spoken
to since freshman orientation. Who are saying, Zimmel, I know
you're the sports guy. What does this mean for the university?
(02:37):
What does this meaning for Texas State? So I wanted
to give my Bobcats a little bit of credit there
that they are pulled up to the table, They've sat down,
the plates in front of them. Now all of it's
set up for him to have success. What will they do?
They have to have success this year. They went seven
to five last year in the regular season, won their
bowl game against unt Can they continue to do that?
Can they win the Sun Belt this year and join
(02:59):
the Pac twelve and make some noise against teams like
Boise State who played in the College Football Playoffs last year,
Oregon State, Washington State, who have very deep pockets. Can
they compete with Gonzaka, who's a basketball school, who's in
the conference. When it comes to men's and women's basketball.
Can they compete with Oregon State on the baseball diamond.
All of that has to be decided at some point,
(03:21):
but not today, not this week. This week they're celebrating
in San Marcus. All right. So Paul Feinbauma was on
Get Up this morning, and he set it up very
interestingly when asked about this ceiling for arch Manning this season,
the absolute roof.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
I think there's a reasonably good chance that arch Manning
will be sitting on the front row in New York
at the Heisman ceremony. That's assuming that his team does
what it's supposed to do and compete for not only
the SEC, but for the national championship, and I really
believe they will. I think Steve Sarkisian, who's one of
the most amazing play callers I've ever seen, made a
critical late in the year. He was way too loyal
(04:02):
to Quinn Yours, who was banged up and was really ineffective.
Had arch Manning been instituted in the second half of
that game, like Nick Saban did a couple of years
ago with a tongue of I loa, I think there's
a reasonably good chance that Texas would have beaten Ohio
State and won the national championship. They're very capable of
doing it again this year. I believe also that Arch
(04:25):
Manning is the best college football quarterback we have seen
since Tim Tebow entered the scene in two thousand and six.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
So there's a lot to dissect there. The big thing,
and this is again maybe nitpicking a little bit, so
Tim Tebow is the bar of the standard for Paul
Finebaum in college football, which I tend to agree with.
I still think that if you give me and everybody's career,
I would probably take Tim Tebow's career the last twenty
five years than anybody else's career to be the face
(04:55):
of college football, to be the guy who won a
Heisman Trophy, who was a runner up another year, and
who won national championships. I tend to think that would
be my dream scenario as a college football player. However,
it should be noted that there are people who are
pointing out that Cameron Newton at Auburn had maybe a
better season in twenty eleven that Johnny Manzel had more
(05:18):
electric season that Joe Burrow might have had a better
season in twenty nineteen. Cole, who is running the ones
and two, is making a sound pretty today in Austin, Texas. Cole,
I got to ask you, when you say he is
the best quarterback since Tim Tebow, does that mean that
Arch could be better than Joe, than Cam than Johnny.
Is that what Paul five Monum is saying. Do you
(05:39):
think or do you think it's a different take.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
I think he's saying that, and he's setting the expectations
up high, but we just got to wait and see.
But also, has he forgotten about Vince Young? Has he
forgotten about Matt Liinhard or Baker Mayfield or I mean,
Joe Burrow was no slouch either, So to say it
it's a little premature, I get it. But also just
take the name away, take the last name away, and
(06:03):
look at just who the quarterback is. I don't think
we've seen a quarterback in a long time coming out
of you know, high school and then now to sitting
behind Quinn or any you know starter in this fact,
have so much pressure put on them going into the season,
and I think we have to make a sign. Hey,
I'll even make it says in stark we trust, we
(06:25):
got to trust them, trust the process.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
Yeah, no, I would say I would agree with that.
I would think to myself that there have not has
not been the type of pressure on a guy. Quinn
had a lot of pressure last year. University texts had
a ton of pressure last year in year one in
the SEC, after hearing for better part of a decade that, oh,
the SEC, the SEC, it's the best conference, it's the
hardest conference. The only team that could beat Texas consistently
(06:50):
last year was Georgia who won the SEC, and the
only other team that beat them was Ohio State who
won the national championship. So that's not that company to
necessary be right, If there's only two teams that beat you,
and one of them wins the conference the other one
wins the national championship, you are a half step away
from getting where you want to be. But I do
think about some of those quarterbacks who have had a
(07:12):
ton of pressure, the guys that have had a lot
of pressure coming into a season, and Arch would be
on my list of the highest pressure situations. Other guys,
I imagine Tua had a little bit of pressure after
replacing Jalen Hurts, and Hurts leaving for Oklahoma. That's not
exactly the easiest position to be in. Kyler Murray another
one leaving Texas A and M and to go to
(07:33):
Oklahoma to play in a quarterback system under Lincoln Riley.
And then of course Caleb Williams in his final season
at USC, after winning the Heisman Trophy, the expectation was
that they should win a national championship at USC. It
didn't happen. A lot of pressure. The question then turns
into how did those guys or why did those guys
(07:56):
struggle in those spots? And how can arch learn from that?
And I think all of those guys unique situations. Obviously,
Caleb Williams the last guy to have that type of
national championship or bust pressure for real, and to be
compared to his Heisman Trophy. It's okay, hey, you won
the Heisman Trophy. How do you take a step up
from there?
Speaker 3 (08:16):
Right?
Speaker 1 (08:16):
Kid? How do you figure that out? I think Archie
is in a position with Sarkesian unlike Caleb Williams at USC,
where Lincoln Riley he's a very good coach, he's a
very good offensive coach, but I don't think he's the
type of philosopher coach. And again, maybe we're giving too
much credit here, but I would give him the credit
of being a mentor to these guys, being able to
(08:37):
mentor a quarterback and make sure that all that outside noise,
if you have a bad game, doesn't affect you. We
saw it affect Caleb Williams. We saw it affect him
on the field. We saw it affect him off the field.
We saw it affect him last year and his rookie
year in the NFL. He's a guy who the outside
noise can get to him. How do I insulate my
college quarterback to make sure that all of the outside
(08:59):
noise stay there, stays on the outside. And so far,
Sarkejian has had a very good track record at the
University of Texas of not letting that outside noise creep
into the locker room. That to me, will be a
big marker on how successful this season is, because I've
been saying I've been pounded the drum. There will not
(09:20):
be more pressure on a team than the Texas Longhorns
in twenty twenty five and twenty twenty six season. There
will not be that type of pressure on anybody else.
Ohio Sate won the national championship last year. They come
into this season I think with a less pressure from
the outside, from the national media and everybody else than
the University of Texas. Texas is the spot this season
(09:41):
after losing the SEC championship last year and losing in
the semi final for the second straight year. That they
come into a season this year with Manning on the
back of the jersey and Texas on the front of it,
that it's going to be incomparable to anybody else in
college football. And for that, if you're a Longhorn fan,
you gotta love it. The spotlight is directly on Austin, Texas,
(10:04):
and for that, you gotta love it if you're a
fan of the sport. Okay, when we come back NBA Playoffs,
I'm sorry NBA free agency. The Pacers lose in Game
seven of the finals, and I think the window is
already closed on them. We'll tell you what I mean
next and more of the NBA free agency news and
notes coming your way on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
