Speaker 1 (00:00):
Kirk Cousins, former Vikings quarterback, former Washington quarterback, and potentially
now the former quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
He was not happy with the way things.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
Went down in Atlanta. Now, the funny thing about this
whole situation is we knew it at the time that
things weren't going well for kirk Cousins. He signed a
massive deal with the Falcons, and then almost immediately, the
Falcons decided to double back and draft a quarterback, Michael

(00:32):
Pennix junior out of Washington with the eighth overall pick
the very next month. Essentially, kirk Cousins was shocked. I
think a lot of fans were shocked, and he spoke
about it. As Netflix's series The Quarterback is on Netflix
now streaming. Kirk Cousins spoke on the show about how

(00:52):
this all ended up.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
I was asked by the broadcasting crew for the game,
what about Atlanta made you want to leave Minnesota? And
I said, that question is is the wrong question. I
didn't want to leave Minnesota. There was nothing about anywhere
that maybe want to leave Minnesota. We wanted to be
in Minnesota, but it became clear that we were going
to be there year to year, and that's what we

(01:16):
didn't want. And at that point we said, all right,
we need to look elsewhere. If that's our only option,
then we'll be back. And when we said, well, we
looked around and we found there's an opportunity that would
be a longer commitment. Would you be interested in giving
us that longer commitment, they said, nope, We're good with
our offer. And I said, okay, you made my decision
really easy, you know, and up signing with Atlanta and

(01:38):
was pretty excited about the chance to get down there
and start fresh. And then, you know, was pretty surprised
when the NFL drafts. HAP wasn't expecting us to take
a quarterback so high. At the time, it felt like
I had been a little bit misled, or certainly if
I had the information around free agency, it certainly would
have affected my decision. I had no reason to leave
Minnesota with how much we loved it there, if both

(02:02):
teams are going to be drafting a quarterback high. But
I've also learned in twelve years in this league that
you're not entitled anything. It's all about being able to
earn your spot and improve yourself.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Yeah. No, so that's a tough spot to be in
if you're anybody, but let alone Kirk Cousins, who I
don't think a lot of people will shed any tears
for him after signing that guaranteed contract with the Falcons
one hundred million dollars guaranteed just a few weeks earlier.
Nobody's going to shed any tiers for Cousins. But I
do feel for him because the guy played twelve years

(02:36):
in the league. He was one of the best quarterbacks
in the NFL. He just couldn't find a way to
win the big one. He obviously struggles under the hottest lights.
There's some guys who you give them the spotlight and
they're going to succeed, They're.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Going to perform. He is not one of those guys.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Monday night football, Sunday night football, playoff football. Kirk Cousins
is not your guy. So for the Falcons in a
weak NFC South, it made sense to go get a
guy like that. Hey, we're not competing for anything right now.
I mean to be honest, let's think about it. Baker
Mayfield is the best quarterback in that division. I like Baker,
but come on, what are we doing here. Kirk Cousins
obviously was an upgrade from whatever they were going to

(03:16):
do at that position going into the twenty twenty four season.
But this is where things get kind of shaky for me. Right,
he signs the big contract, the long term deal with Atlanta,
not knowing that they're going to draft Michael Pennix. And
then he's not told by the owner of a team,
the guy that he negotiated the contract with. He's not

(03:38):
told by his head coach that they're going to draft
a quarterback. He gets a phone call from Zach Robinson,
the offensive coordinator, while the Falcons are on the clock.
So you're watching the NFL Draft, you're excited to see
what your team's going to do in a.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Top ten pick.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
To add on to that, you're thinking, hey, maybe they're
going to give me a weapon, maybe they're going to
trade this pick and get me another veteran piece. But
instead you see your replacement walk across the stage and
shake the commissioner's hand. That's got to be a gut punch.
And not only that, but if you've watched the Netflix documentary,
if you know anyone, no, I don't, I don't like

(04:15):
that for Kirk Cousins.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
If you've watched documenter.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
If you've seen Kirk Cousins or heard him speak, he's
a family focused guy. This is a dude who very
much cares not only about the locker room and try
to build camaraderie with his guys, but off the field,
he is the epitome of the family man. We're talking
Cole's cash dressing. We're talking, you know, take your kids
to church on Sunday type of guy, press shirts type

(04:40):
of guy. So to move your entire family from a
place you played for multiple seasons in Minnesota to Atlanta,
that's not an easy task either.

Speaker 2 (04:48):
That's something that you have to consider.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
And I just feel bad for him in that way
that I understand. It's the NFL, and I get that
you're going to have your replacement drafted, but to have
it drafted a couple weeks after you sign your deal
and then you think to yourself, Hey, if this doesn't happen,
if you don't draft Michael Pennix in the first round,

(05:11):
do you think that Kirk Cousins might have played a
little bit better In the last four straight losses, Cousin
threw eight interceptions and no touchdown passes, his worst liney
of games in his thirteen year career, the Falcons bench Cousins.
In Week sixteen, Pennix took over, played solidly and the
Falcons went one and to miss the playoffs. But this

(05:34):
entire situation just shows to me mismanagement on the Falcons part.
I think that they did mislead kirk Cousins. I think
that if he was in the position to re sign
with the Vikings and teach JJ McCarthy, he would have
done it. But if you're the Vikings, you're watching this
on Netflix, you're Kevin O'Connell, you're the GM of the Vikings.
You're sitting back and you're watching thinking to yourself, Man,

(05:55):
we made the right decision, Like we decided to do
short term, year over year deals with Sam Bradford, I'm sorry,
Sam Darnald, trade for Daniel Jones and let JJ McCarthy
rehab that knee injury. And when Sam Donald's contract came up,
when his number got called and it was hey, do
you want him here long term? Well, the Vikings did

(06:17):
exactly what they did at kirk Cousins. They said, we're
going year to year. We have what we think is
our guy for the future. We feel very comfortable going
all in on JJ McCarthy, giving him the keys to
the organization. If you want to be around it and compete,
that's fine, but that is our long term idea. So
at least for Cousins, it's not like they sign another

(06:39):
guy and immediately turned it over and changed their tone.
I wonder how the Falcons do this year. I don't
expect them to be the team to beat in the
NFC South. I don't expect them to be a playoff
team this year. What I do wonder is what this
season looks like now that you've seen Pennox under center,
now that you've heard these Kirk Cousins complaints about the organization.

(07:03):
It's too close to the NFL season to really try
to make any moves to move off of Cousins. But
I do wonder how far this team can go during
the regular season, and if it is the Buccaneers season
to win that division once again. The Saints don't have
a quarterback, the Falcons seem to have a malcontent quarterback,
and funny enough, the Buccaneers, an organization that I always

(07:26):
thought was kind of a laughing stock pre Tom Brady
getting there, have suddenly turned into the model organization in
the NFC South, which is something to be said. Cole,
what did you think when you saw this story?

Speaker 4 (07:39):
So I was gonna ask, I know it just came
out last night, but have you watched any of the episodes?
By chance?

Speaker 2 (07:44):
I did. I was watching them today at work.

Speaker 4 (07:47):
Okay, so I watched I think maybe two or three episodes.
I forget, but it seems like with everything going on,
Kurt really he fit in like he was driving with
the team and they liked him and and everything. And
for Kirk Cousins, they did, uh, what was it else?
He I think it was like HBO, but you got

(08:07):
to see behind the scenes with Kirk Cousins.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
Oh no, it's quarterback.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
But you got to see who Kirk Cousins really is
as a family man and you know, a godly man,
and he's just a good dude, Like he's just a
solid guy I would want to hang out with. But
they did him dirty and it was just kind of
a head scratcher. I almost forgot they did that during
the draft and getting Michael Pennix, but it seemed like
he was getting along pretty well with teammates there in

(08:32):
Atlanta and they did they did well, but one thing
I really admired about him too. I don't know if
you saw this spoiler alert it's on the show, but
whenever he's playing bad, he sends out voice memos. He
got that from Peyton Manning. I don't know if he
saw that part yet. And he's completely open of he's
going to, hey, you know, I'm playing like trash. You know,
can you look and see what's going on? Like So

(08:53):
he's open to coaching and open to new ideas. I
just wish they were a little bit more transparent with
him when it came to drafting.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
Yeah, you gotta be open and honest with your quarterback
going forward. Speaking of open and honest, Dak Prescott says
he's fully healthy is as healthy as he can be
going into his free camp in South Lake, Texas on Tuesday. Quote,
I'll be a full go for camp. I'm healthy. I
think soon I'll probably get the official sign off from Doc.
I feel healthy, which is a good sign for Cowboys fans.

(09:26):
They feel very good about their quarterback coming off of
his injuries last year. I always like it at this
point of the season, everybody's one hundred percent. Nobody's banged
up yet now you're going to see in OTA's You're
going to see in training camp how these guys mesh together.
You gotta remember, the Cowboys added another receiver to that room.
They got George Pickens from the Steelers. The Cowboys love

(09:48):
a little controversy, George Pickens, a little bit of a headcase,
a little bit of the wide receiver diva vibes. When
it comes to Pickens, how is he going to fit
in with Ceedee Lamb and that wide receiver room. Time
will tell, But Dak says he's healthy, which is a
good sign for Cowboys fans. All right, when we come
back Inconceivable and Cole has a couple of stories for us,
I'm excited for this. Next to The Craig Way Show
