Speaker 1 (00:00):
Nothing is off limits. Everybody has a take on something,
whether it be a guy's forty times, the way a
guy throws a ball, or in Patrick Mahomes' case, the
way that he is enjoying his off season. So a
couple of weeks ago, there was photos of Mahomes on
a boat and what appeared like some dad bod. Now Cole,
(00:22):
my question is this is it over the line to
poke fun at Patrick Mahomes dad bod.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
No, he's bringing the dad bods back, which I appreciate
for myself, but I mean, look, it's off season. He's
on a yacht man. Like, just let him have fun, Like,
just it's Kevin's Kyle's mind. Yeah, go ahead, okay, listen.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Kansas City based podcast or radio host Kevin Kaisman, who
has been a Kansas City Chiefs fan. He's covered the team,
he's covered the NFL for a long time. He had issues.
He was on his podcast, Kevin Kaisman Has Issues on Monday.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
He said this, you said Patrick Mahomes is fat. Well,
Patrick Mahomes is the one who's made fun of the
way he eats.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
He's the one.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
No, he doesn't make fun of it. He's bragged about
the way he eats, he has made fun of himself
and referred to it as dad bod, and all the
way along, he's been the greatest quarterback on the planet.
These are completely separate issues. At this point in his career.
Patrick Mahomes is the quarterback of his generation. He has
three Super Bowls. He dipped things on the football field
we've never seen before. He has redefined the position of quarterback.
(01:32):
He is the epitome of greatness. It will not last
until he's forty five, going the way he's going. If
you're trying to look at his pictures and say he
doesn't have fat around his gut, you're dishonest. If you're
saying the fat is around his gut and that's by
design and that's good for him, then you don't know
what you're talking about. You just don't. There's nothing good
(01:53):
about it. There never has been in sports who said
John Daly was a better golfer because he had better
belly fat.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Big So, okay, and this is where I have some issue. Right,
So he goes on to say, you're a five hundred
million dollars quarterback, you have these comments in the offseason,
you're taking it serious on the field. We got our
butts kicked in the Super Bowl. We're coming back with vengeance.
This is what he says. Quote, dude, you're fat. Your
belly would be fat at my pool hangout with us
(02:20):
sixty year old. Now I have a little bit of
issue with that, obviously. Now, when you looked at Tom
Brady's physique when he went in the sixth round, he
was not a chiseled Adonis, Okay, But by the age
of thirty two, thirty three, thirty four, he was on
the cover of GQ, he was dating a supermodel, and
he took his health super seriously. It's a guy doing piometrics.
(02:44):
This is a guy who doesn't eat strawberries coal. He
wouldn't put strawberries on his pasta, let alone in his body.
He's not eating strawberries, okay, so he's even the avocado
ice cream. He took care of his body. Tom Brady
took care of his body. Mahomes is twenty nine. He's
gonna be thirty this season. He might be the best
quarterback that we've ever seen. He's the MVP of the league.
(03:05):
He's a six time Pro bowler. And when guys come
out in the media, especially radio hosts. I'll speak for
myself here and cousins come out of the media and
poke fun at little Pillsbury dope boy action in the
middle of the section of a quarterback. I think that's
a little low blow, man, I don't think you should
be able to say that about Mahomes. But then our
god Kevin Kleisman goes on and talk about how we
(03:27):
don't like John Daily, that John Daly was fat? Did
that make him a better call for? And it made
me think I think we like larger individuals in these
professional sports. I think we like Bartow Cologne, the pitcher
for the Mets for a number of years, because he
was a little hefty and you got to think the
(03:48):
best baseball player maybe ever, maybe Ruth. He had a
little pudget around the waist. All I'm saying is this,
Does it make you a better athlete?
Speaker 3 (03:57):
No?
Speaker 1 (03:58):
Does it make you a more likable act?
Speaker 2 (04:00):
I think so.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
I think we like larger athletes. Cole, what do you think?
Speaker 2 (04:06):
I'm not opposed to it, man, I you know, as
a thicker guy myself, I'm all for it. But also
if it's affecting Patrick's play, like down the season or
anything like that, if he's showing up to training camp
out of shape and all these things, then okay, I
get it now. But he's having fun in the off season.
(04:26):
If the Mahomes want to put on a couple lecture pounds,
that's fine. I'm not opposed to it. Let him, let
him live his summer. He just came off a Super
Bowl loss. So again, I'm I'm with it. You know,
I would rather at least for me, because I'm like,
you know, I'm a thicker dude. I kind of relate
(04:49):
to it a little bit more. I'm like, oh, yeah, hey,
you know he's got some skill over there.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
Look at that.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Yeah, Okay, he's not, you know, a six or five goddess,
you know, like Tom Tom Brady.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
But if Mahomes was playing like JaMarcus Russell, then I
could understand it. If he was playing like JaMarcus Russell,
missing reads, not watching film, and was just a slob,
I would understand that. I would get that side of it.
But he's not those things. He's the MVP of the league.
He's a super Bowl champion quarterback. Like he has been
(05:21):
everything that we wanted Aaron Rodgers to be, everything we
wanted Drew Brees to be everything we wanted Tom Brady
to be. He is the most exciting quarterback. He's the
best quarterback his off year last year, he's better than
some guy's best season. Right Like, if Athy Richardson had
a season like Mahomes had last season, we would think
that Richardson was on his right on the right step.
(05:44):
Caleb Williams and his rookie year had a season like
Mahomes had in his previous season, we think he was
on the right steps. But because Mahomes has re established
what it means to be great in this league, when
his QBR is below a guy like Russell Wilson, we
start worrying. We start worry about where he's gonna go
and if he turns into the next would have been,
(06:04):
could have been, should have been? And when you're getting
compared to guys like Tom Brady, it's unfair, right, You're
Brady had the greatest coach of all time in Bill Belichick.
He had one of the best defenses of all time
with the way that those guys were playing, and all
he had to do was take control of the ball
and make sure that he didn't turn it over. And
even in those situations, think back to the NFC Championship
(06:26):
game where we had the fumble gate, where we had
the tuck rule, right, Like, even in that situation, Brady's
already won a championship and we still are like, hey,
he's not doing his job. He almost turned the ball over.
When Mahomes came into the league, after he sat behind
Alex Smith for a season, the goal, of course, was, hey,
we're trying to go win some games. They won a
super Bowl, Okay, like in his first year, So I
(06:50):
can't really or I should say his second year. He
lost in the NFC Championship, his first year as a
full time starter. But what I'm point being is that
he has been so successful, so early in his career
that even when he struggles a little bit at age
twenty eight, we wonder, oh, is this a problem. I
don't think it's a problem. And I will say this,
fifteen and two last season. Chiefs were fifteen and two
(07:13):
last season and Mahomes the best years, yes, and went
to the Super Bowl. Granted they got blown out in
the Super Bowl, But is that more of a Patrick
Mahomes problem or is that a problem that the Philadelphia
Eagles were chock full of talent that they were. Obviously,
when the game started playing out, you noticed, Oh, their
wide receiver room is better, their running back room is better,
(07:35):
their defensive line and linebackers and secondaries better. They had
every one of all of the twenty two positions on
the field. The only position that the Chiefs were better
at in the Super Bowl was quarterback. That was the
only position. So I think it's a low blow to
go after Mahomes's weight, especially after one season. He goes
(07:56):
on Kevin Kleisman goes on and says, stop at the fast, dude,
do a sit up, do something. There's no training to
this man. I don't understand it. He's not a kid anymore.
You can't just run through the NFL career eating taco
bell all the time. It's time, dude, it's time. And
again I say low blow. I think we like bigger athletes.
(08:17):
I think if Mahomes blew up to three hundred pounds, yeah,
we like a big boy. If Mahomes blew up to
three hundred pounds and was still throwing forty five touchdown
passes a season, I think we like him even more.
We'd say, look what he's doing, even carrying the extra
weight around the mid section. And I will say this
last part. I think having a quarterback that isn't completely ripped,
(08:41):
having a little bit of cushion. Now, Kleisman says that
that's not the case that you shouldn't have any extra weight.
You shouldn't be carrying the extra weight. It's a problem
for you. I don't necessarily think that's the case. I
think in a sport like football, Yeah, being NFL ready
and being you know, muscle bound, is important. Sure, you
want to have the muscle, but finition part, I don't
(09:01):
think that that's really the case. I think that you
can get away with carrying a little bit of extra
weight if it means that you're able to take a
hit every once in a while. And Mahomes has been
able to do that. The offensive line the last couple
years has not been good. Every year his offensive line
has struggled. The team has struggled. Not necessarily, he has struggled.
We should make that a note as well. All right,
when we come back Big twelve Media Day, what did
(09:23):
the commissioner say this time? All coming up next? Craig
wait Show rolls on on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
The Zone
