Are the Grateful Dead overrated?

Cameron says the Grateful Dead are overrated...a listener asked why.

about the Grateful Dead because they heardyou say this when we had done the
music survey back in the other place, and you said you stopped just short
of saying they were overrated, right, didn't you? What's the exact question

Yeah? Okay? So and forme it was Guns and Roses. Yeah,
and mainly that's just because I couldn'tget an Axel Roses voice. Yeah,
it was mainly because of that.But but for them to you know,
be that celebrated and all that,I thought, I thought they were

a little overrated. Yeah. Sosimilar for for the Grateful Dead, they're
considered one of the greatest bands fulltime, right, A lot of people
think they are. I think RollingStone magazine puts them in that category for
their longevity and you know, allthe things that they did. Yeah.
And I know people who are myage who are dead heads love the music.
Yeah. Yeah, I know they'reprobably you know, more old souls.

But when I hear their music,and I've tried to listen to their
albums, I just I can't getinto their style, because would you say,
I'm not a music fiend, Idon't. I don't know enough about
music to really get into all allthe notes and stuff. But it seems
like they're the way that they playmusic is a little bit unorthodox as compared

to other bands. Is that?Am I correct in saying that Craig there
was a lot about the Grateful Deadthat was unorthodox when compared to other bands.
Yes, but they were very talentedand creative, and Jerry Garcia and
the whole group they were They weregood, and there's some I like a
lot of their offerings. But Iwouldn't say for me, if you ask
me to name my personal I'm notsaying some be all into all the top

ten buns of all time. I'mnot saying that saying for me personally,
if you ask me to name tenbands or artists a top ten of all
time, would the Grateful Dead makethe list? My answer would be no.
But that's me. There's a lotof other people say absolutely a long

personal taste thing. I've said thison this program before. I'm not I
was never really a big fan ofled Zeppelin. I like some of it,
some of the catalog. If notmy favorite band, one of your
tops of all time, now,I would probably put them in a top
ten maybe, but not one ofmy favorites. You know, they'd be

down right right around the bottom ofthe top ten of I was going to
do that. But for me,you know, I like a little bit
different style of music. Part ofthat, I think is because when I
grew up, I had an oldersister and two older brothers. A sister
was the oldest, and two olderbrothers, and they were very much in

the led Zeppelin. I'd hear itplaying on my parents hy Fi stereo.
You know, you're still away tohaving rocking along or whatever. And they
also had a propensity to play itvery loud, which bothered a kid like
me. I didn't. I thoughtthis, it really had to be that
loud. And then, you know, so I had those old man thoughts
even when I was a kid,because if we walk into an arena these

days, or even in the ballparkthese days to watch Texas Player or anything
else, and then music's just crushingyou. When I went to Game four
the NBA Finals, Mavericks itself isjust blowing your doors off the club,
isn't it. Yeah? Yeah,So the old man in me goes,
is it really have to be thatloud? I'm okay with the music selection.

Does it have to be that loud? Couldn't be just a little bit
down a little bit? That guysturned out just a little sittle a little
bit. But anyway, I getit, and I understand the contributions that
both The Grateful Dead and led Zeppelinhave made to the history of rock and
roll. I totally get it andagree with it. But in terms of

my personal flavor, yeah, Iprobably wouldn't have it. I don't know
there's an exact reason why I don'tlike them and why I think they're overrated,
But when I listen to the music, I just don't gel with it,
and that's why that's my opinion onit. Of course, I'll be
respectful if everyone's been, because musicis it's all about your persistions, a

very personal thing, a personal tasting. Somebody said, agreed the Dead overrated
somewhat. Yeah so, and againthat's a personal opinion thing. Somebody else
