Speaker 1 (00:00):
We begin the second hour of the program talking about
some football and also baseball as well. Astros dropped a
ten inning contest to the Phillies yesterday, three to two
in ten innings. However, the Astros had a pickup today.

(00:20):
Did you happen to see who the Astros happened to
add to their roster.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
I'm full into football right now. Greg, I've the Rangers there,
They're done.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
Don't be low sad where you don't do you don't even.

Speaker 4 (00:34):
I mean, I'm excited.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
You know it was a great run lest this past season.
I know the gram is pitching for our round Rock
Express tonight.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
That's right.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
But we're on to as a.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Bell Belichick once said, we'ren the Cincinnati, We're on the
twenty twenty five.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
You're on to not paying any attention to the Cowboys, right,
You're onto that?

Speaker 4 (00:54):
Yes, Texas football and then my fantasy teams. I got you.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
Well, Nevertheless, I will tell you the Astros have added
the just released from the Dodgers, Jason Hayward. Yeah, fifteen
year veteran. He was DFA designated for assignment last week
by the Dodgers because they had a lot of guys
coming off the injury list.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
He is.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
I think it was his last at bat or definitely
in his last game for them. He hit a tie
breaking home run to help the Dodgers sweep the Mariners
before they let him go. He was a good man
in the clubhouse. All of those kinds of things is
as well. Okay, So the Astros start play tonight in

(01:41):
the American League West. That lead, which was five and
a half is now three and a half. It's the
Mariners have kind of after their manager after firing their manager,
at least for the time being. Playing a little bit
better now, and they also need some reinforcements in the outfield.
Mauricio Dubon missed yesterday's game when he collided with the

(02:03):
outfield wall in the winner of the Orioles on Sunday.
Kyle Tucker has been out since June third with that
shin injury. They're hoping to get him back next month.
Hayward turned thirty five this month. He was batting two
eight six homers, twenty eight RBIs in sixty three games
for the Dodgers. He's a career to fifty seven hitter,

(02:23):
one hundred eighty homers, seven hundred nine RBIs He's played
in seventeen hundred and sixty six games with the Braves,
the Cardinals, the Cubs, and the Dodgers got a World
Series ring with the Cubs did that as well, and
he's played in forty three postseason games as well. So
Astro is trying to add something to the outfield and

(02:44):
that's a good addition, I think for them, and.

Speaker 3 (02:49):
Jason Hayward is a guy who can give them a.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
Good clubhouse presence and also an occasional good bat and
can play the field as well. So they've made that edition.
The Astros play late this afternoon against Philadelphia. If you're
not one of those people who has what do they
call it now, Space City Home Network I think is
the name of the Astros television Regional Sports network. If

(03:16):
you don't have that, then you can watch it on
TBS tonight. So it's a Tuesday, Tuesday night game on
TBS for Astros Philly. So that's a good matchup for
some Tuesday night baseball watching because we're not to Tuesday
football yet. There's no match and no match, no maction
yet or Sun Belt Texas State is a Tuesday game

(03:37):
this year, and.

Speaker 4 (03:38):
We're getting close.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
NFL is gonna have games, Craig on Thursday, Yeah, Friday, Yeah, Saturday's,
Tuday on Monday.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
And then you mentioned college football, and there's gonna be
nights where there we'll be football on Wednesday. So there's
gonna be weeks where we're going to have seven full
days of football.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
That's true. That's true, and absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
And your television bill will also reflect that, depending on
what you have. If you want to watch every single
NFL game and you live out of market from your
favorite team, boy, may the Lord be with you and
your telephone bill.

Speaker 4 (04:12):
Yeah, cable bill, that your streaming bill.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
That could be a you know, a real problem because
for you now you were once a dedicated red zone
or now or excuse me, a Sunday ticket was.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
Twenty three years. I had it, no one thing. It was.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Let's see twenty two. I had it for twenty four years.
I got it in ninety eight and had it through
twenty twenty two because it was it was it was
too easy, I mean it was. I actually got a break.
I got it for free the first season for free
because Direct TV was running a deal you signed up.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
I signed up with that.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
They were running a deal with their sports package, I think,
and I was going to need the sports package anyway.
We were moving into my house in Cedar Park, moving
down from the Dallas Fort Worth area from Irving, and
we were moving into Cedar Park, and I had lived
in an apartment for ten months out at Riatta.

Speaker 3 (05:10):
Oh by Darry Jones. By the way, I.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
Was down there while my late wife at the time, Laurie,
and the kids were back up because the opportunity to
move down here came pretty suddenly, and my two older
kids were already in school, and so the school year
had started. It was September, and by the way, the

(05:35):
first I'd been on the Long Worn Network obviously since
eighty eight, and I'd been in the broadcast boots since
ninety two, but in the first five seasons that I
was in the booth ninety two through ninety six, I
commuted for all the game. So ninety seven, the opportunity
to move down here and beyond what was then called
the a I'm thirteen hundred with Bill Schoening and I
hosting a talk show happened two weeks into the college

(05:59):
football season ninety seven, So it was offered the job
right after they won their season opening game over Rutgers
accepted the job. The first game that happened after I
accepted the job to move down here was the Route.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
Sixty six game.

Speaker 1 (06:17):
It was sixty six to three loss to UCLA.

Speaker 4 (06:20):
Uh was there any like? Uh? Oh, what did I
just put myself in?

Speaker 1 (06:25):
Well, it's funny you mentioned that, because what happened that
year was long worn football team at four and seven,
fired the coach. Men's basketball went I believe it was
ten and eighteen, eleven and eighteen, Tom Penders resigned. Women's
basketball went twelve and sixteen, and baseball I think was

(06:47):
twenty six and thirty six. I mean, all four major
sports had losing records, and I thought, and I moved
down here for this it was that kind of thing void.
Did it all change, however for the good the next
But when we moved down, we were ready to sell
the house in Irving and buy the one and Cedar Park.
We did, and I had figured I was probably going

(07:10):
to get direct TV, And then they had this big,
big offer going on and if you signed up for
it and got the sports package you'd get, you would
you would get Sunday.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
Ticket for free.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
And I was planning to probably get it anyway, because
I knew about it and I knew I could watch
the Rams by doing that. So I got it for
free the first year, but I had it for twenty
four years and then it was too much of a
hassle on a problem and I'd have to pay a
lot more for its the same programming I was already getting.

(07:43):
And I said, no, not going to do it. I'll
do Red Zone. I'd still have Red Zone on my package.
Drives Linda crazy. She has trouble watching Red Zone because
it just shoots around so much.

Speaker 4 (07:54):
That's what me and my dad have and that's what
we love.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
Yeah, I know, I like it. She tried to get
a little little bit used.

Speaker 4 (08:00):
To it, but it wasn't say it was difficult.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
The thing with the YouTube TV also is and who
knows what will happen with ballet Sports. You know, we
just saw Amazon pull away their one hundred and fifty
million dollars offer the by Ballet Sports and the Diamond
Sports Group. There is no Bally on YouTube, so like
if you wanted to, so we have to pay a separate,
separate price to be able to watch the Rangers or
the Mavericks.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
Or the Spurs and want not to worry about that
much longer.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
Mavericks and Stars both gone from BALI, Spurs will be
on Rangers will see after this high school football.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
It's Friday Night.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
I'm doing Lovejoy against love A Cooper, the return of
Todd Dodge.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
To the sideline.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
So I calling the high school football game Friday night
and then doing that high school Scoreboard live show again.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
I've been doing it now twenty forgot how many years.

Speaker 4 (08:50):
Anyway, that's the season.

Speaker 1 (08:52):
Yeah, it started in ninety six, as we started, so anyway,
all right, coming up next, speaking of high school football,
we'll talk some of that with Greg Tapper managing it
of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine when we continue on
Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
