Speaker 1 (00:00):
The iconic ninety two year old Willie Nelson, a former
Abbot Panther, I might point out as well, which brings
us to our weekly conversation with the editor in chief
of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, Greg Temper, joins us.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
On the line.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Now, tip before we get into the football conversation, there's
other serious business. We toss this out because I had
a story today about the twelve and I didn't know
there were twelve twelve flavors of Captain Crunch ranked from
worst to best, from twelve to number one. Number one
of all time, by the way, was just the Captain

(00:38):
Crunch with Crunchberry's was the all time number one. My
favorite one of those is the peanut Butter, which I
think they had ranked number three. But so it got
me to thinking, and I offered it out as a
question there on our text line of folks, if you
only had one breakfast cereal, you can only have one
the rest of your life. Now I'm not saying you
have to eat it every day the rest of your life,
but anytime that you want cereal, you can only have

(01:00):
one particular one. And we had and we had we had,
you know, answers ranging from lucky Charms, fruit loube, somebody, uh,
somebody said neutral grain, almond, raisin.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
I said, where's the fun in that?

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Our man CB said, I love raisin brand, but up
here in the Pacific Northwest, my go to cereals honey out,
Cheerio's frosted flakes.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
He said, I eat cereal at night, not for breakfast.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
And then somebody else had a very good point, said,
you can't really love any cereal unless you eat a
bowl them with no milk and no problem having a
bowl of dry fruit loops for dessert in the evening.
So I put it to you, if you only had
one and now you've got two young boys who probably
liked cereal, what's what's the go to in the temper house.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
Yeah, so so this is a complicated question because I
do love cereal. Growing up, my parents were hardly like
strict about like food, but like one of the red
lines they drew who was like, well, we're not going
to have like the fruity pebbles or the cocoa puffs,

(02:05):
or like the super sugary cereals in there the closest
we ever got, and this is probably gonna end up
being my pick. I think from a a because it's
excellent and beek. From a nostalgia perspective, I'm a cinnamon
toast crunch guy. Cinemas toast crunch is very strong. It
can be breakfast, it can also be a dessert, so
it's got some some versatility there. The other thing about

(02:28):
it is that, you know, I think you have to
judge uh Cereal in some ways by how good the
milk that's left behind is. And you want to talk
about an elite uh you know, uh Cereal milk is
is cinnamon trost crunch milk that might be mine. Our boys, Uh,
they are into cheerios at the moment, honeynut cheerios. I'm

(02:52):
trying to get them into two other things. But but
right now that's that's kind of their Their go to
is is honeynot cheerios. We have not crossed the cinemon.
I have not introduced in the cinnamon toast crunch yet.
That might be something I have to take care of
even this weekend now that I'm just taking parenting advice
on the air.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
Yeah yeah, well, well you know to your to your
milk left in the bowl thing, that's a big reason
why my all time favorite is cocoa crispies because you
get a bowl of chocolate milk.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Oh yeah, it's good. Well, and I'll tell you, you know,
my my folks would not let me have it. But then,
like I know, whenever I would go to grandma and
Grandpa's house, they'd have the goods, right, they would have
the they would eat their oat brand or something. But
when but when the grandkids, the grandsons were coming over,
they would go and they'd buy that like multi pack
of the mini boxes. And you want to talk about

(03:41):
you want to talk about haymakers being thrown among the
tepper boys fighting over the fruity pebbles or the or
the cocoa puffs or or those types of things. The
love lucky charms. That was. That was warfare is.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
What that was.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
That was as nasty as me and my two brothers got.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
By the way, I know this please you because you're
a wrestling guy. Your answer matches that of our morning
show co host, the World's Strongest Band, Mark Henry Weesome
cinnamon toast crunch for him.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
I like to think of me and mister Henry is
kindred spirits in a lot of ways. Both both, you know,
talk for a living, both extremely strong. Yeah, a lot
of a lot of similarities between me and Mark Hennerby.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
Sure there are all Right, let's talk a little bit
of football. I want to start with college. You mentioned
what an important game the Baylor SMU game was going
to be. Yes, important for SMU, but you said here
was a chance for Baylor to make a statement and
lo and behold through the craziness of everything that happened
in that game, they made a statement.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Yeah, Oh oh, I think so. I think when you're
talking about some of the big winners in Week two
of college football, you have to look at what Baylor
was able to do in what I thought was a
really inspired performance, especially offensive. You know, Sawyer Robertson. That's
the best game he's certainly he's had in a Baylor uniform.
Four to four yards and four touchdowns. They spread the

(05:07):
ball around, you know, you know he had I think
he can play past seven different receivers. Astion Hawkins he
hit ten times. Josh Cameron was his favorite target as well.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
The offense in full bloom, and more importantly, that was
a team that continued to take punches and continue to
punch back because I think against against Auburn they took
some punches and they didn't always have that counter. I
think that this was for Baylor really important for them
to find that answer. Now. I think that there are
some pretty severe concerns about their defense, but this this

(05:44):
could be the kind of team that can outscore their problems,
uh and defensively, and I think they did that. You know,
for SMU to lose at home, I think is it
hurts they They have a get right game this week
against against Missouri State on the red actually at Missouri
State before you know, look they go and they're gonna

(06:04):
take on the TCU and and for them, that now
becomes in a lot of ways, I would say a
must win game for them. They got to win the skillet.
You've got to go. You gotta at least split against
your Big twelve posts in non conference because otherwise, you know,
the the ACC, I don't know how strong, even with

(06:25):
Florida State on the come up, I don't know how
strong that's going to be. That a two lost team,
especially to teams that I think are going to finish
let's say middle of the pack in the Big twelve
tc maybe better than that. But You've got to make
sure you go out there and take care of business
about that so that you can at least give yourself
a fighting chance to get back to the College Football

(06:46):
Playoff without having to win in an at large capacity,
without winning the conference. So it's this. This really in
a lot of ways, Rescue removes a lot of the
the safety net for they have. For a I returned
to college football playoff.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
Let me ask you about the other one, the other
Intrust State game, big in Trust State game inside, and
that was Texas State beating UTSA. Is it safe to
say that now Texas State is the G five program
in the state of Texas.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
I think it has to be right. I mean, this
was a really impressive performance from from the Bobcats because
of the way that they did it and especially the
offensive firepower that they really unleashed here. You know, Brad Jackson,
I thought played particularly well in this ball game. Three
total touchdowns, took care of the football for the most part.

(07:43):
They got enough from the running game. You know, they're
going to have some they have their own issues defensively,
but I think that what you saw from Texas State
was a moment of a rival and an opportunity to
knock off a rival like that on UCSA and to
go out there and say that, yeah, we are the
team to beat as far as G five is concerned

(08:04):
in the state of Texas. I think that was awfully broke,
awfully impressive from GJ. Kinney squad. And you know, now
you take a look at what they're what they're going
to be up against within the Sun Belt. I don't know,
you know, the only other undefeated team in the Sun
Belt right now is app State, and app State was
having a whale of the time, whether I believe an

(08:25):
SCS opponent is all last week. So I think if
you're a Texas State, the everything is right in front
of you, and I think that this is you want
to talk about a confidence builder, going on the road
to a really hostile environment there at the Alamodome and
pulling off when over ucsday. That is a signature win
I think for Gjknney and company and proof that they
really have arrived in a lot of ways well.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
And no time to rest for the weary, right, I mean,
they turn around and they go to Tempe, they play
Arizona State, who they who they had a real shot
to beat. In San Marcus last year on that Thursday night,
if not for Cam Scout Booze heroics in that one
that were just this side of what he did in
that Peach Bowl game against Texas, Texas State might have
won that game. So I hang that out there, tip,

(09:09):
because I would agree with you that right now they're
the G five top of the heap in the state.
That said, they go to Tempee, North Texas has Washington
State at home this week, and then they go to
Army and if they can they sweep those two games,
and then Texas State should falter in Tempe, then then

(09:30):
we're maybe looking at the mean and green As being
the better of the G five programs in the state.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
Yeah, don't don't overlook what North Texas was able to
do going on the road long road trip to Michigan
to take on Western Michigan and come away with a
really gutty overtime win. You know. And I think, you know,
there's gonna be a lot of talk about Drew Massamaker,
a guy who I think became a bit of a
full hero in the ball game last year where he

(09:57):
was kind of thrust into you know, duty and performed
really admirably in there, and now he's the starting quarterback there.
But I think the realm, I think the immersions of
Mackenzie McGill as they're running back, I think has been
so important for them, and I think it's really set
them apart. So you're right, you know, it's all out
right in front of their for North Texas, you know,

(10:19):
Washington State this week. You know, they look they get
him at home. I think it's a winnable game. I
think they can, they can, you know, if they can
come out there swinging, I think they've got an opportunity
to win that game. Who knows what you're getting from Army.
Army is the most perhaps in the entire nation, the
single most unpredictable team because they have a a a

(10:40):
loss at home to Tarleton State and then they go
on the road and beat Into State. So you figure
that one out. So if you're if you're if you're
North Texas, you know, especially in what feels like a
winnable American Yeah, why not? Why not in North Texas?
So yeah, I think that it's it has been those
two programs North Texas and Tech the State that have

(11:01):
kind of risen above the others. As far as G
five programs in the state of Texas are concerned.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
The The other thing, uh that I was going to mention, obviously,
since we're talking about intro state, you have Texas against
you tap down here on Saturday, and while Texas will
be expected to get the win, I think it's admirable
what Scottie Walden is doing with that program.

Speaker 2 (11:23):
And and I.

Speaker 1 (11:24):
Know that that their their goal is to try to
make it to a Bowl this year.

Speaker 3 (11:27):
Let me tell you so, Texas fans who may not
have been paying a ton of attention to UTEP, I
get it. I understand. It's it's you know, they they're
a little bit off the beaten path. You know, you
don't deal a whole lot of what's going on in
Conference USA. And yes they are owing to but or
one on one or other at their win over over
Easy Martin this past week. Two things about them. One,

(11:49):
I think you're really going to enjoy Malachai Nelson, their quarterback,
a guy who's a former five star quarterback who has
bounced around, he's landed in an ol passo, uh, and
he's seems like he is starting to blossom there. I
think you're going to enjoy, you know, getting a chance
to see him, because I think he's a talented young man.
The other thing is that if you are unfamiliar with

(12:09):
Scotty Walden and you are not listened to his press
conferences or you've never heard him talk, you want to
talk about a guy who will get you on his
side real quickly. One of the most dynamic, one of
the most exciting, one of the most inspiring young coaches.
I think in all of college football. It is easy
to be a Scotty Walden fan. This guy is a

(12:31):
firecracker in a lot of ways. He'll remind folks I
think a lot of Joey maguire in that he is
all energy, all the time, all positivity, and he is
all and he's trying to build this thing in a
way of you know, embracing that underdog role and saying, yeah,
we can do this. This is what we Let's not
talk about what we've gone in the past. Let's talk
about what's possible in the future. He is a he's

(12:52):
a lot of fun one. You're exactly right. Texas is
almost is probably gonna have their way with the with
the miners. They're just way more talented of a roster.
But but I will tell you that protectas fans, if
you want to see a guy who I think has
an opportunity to be a future star in college football,
Scottie Walden there at UTEP is a name to know
he is. He is a lot, a lot of fun

(13:13):
to watch.

Speaker 1 (13:14):
Coach UH visiting with Greg Tepper, the editor in chief
Dave of Campbell's Texas Football magazine.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
I want to go to UH.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
I want to go to high school football, and I
want to talk about the piece at carter YH wrote
UH for the Texas Football Site.

Speaker 2 (13:29):
UH.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
And that and that is about oh and two teams
which I think a lot of folks would be ready
just to toss him on the on the trash pile
after starting oh and two Uh. But these are the
ones that are mentioned Liberty Christian Outstanding private School in Argyle,
East Bernard, Katie, Midland Legacy and DeSoto all oh and two.

(13:50):
And the the caution that's being thrown up by Carter
and your guys there is don't give up on them
just yet.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
Yeah. And I think for different reasons, you know, for
some of them, I think you've got a team. For example,
let's take a team like are Got Liberty, Christian are
got Liberty. Christian has play two very difficult games. They
played Anna and they have played Taxes High. They played
two tough games. I think the same thing can be
said about Midland Legacy. Midland Legacy, I think, is a

(14:20):
team that we started the year as the favorite to
win a little Southwest conference. They have gone they have
been road warriors that they have gone on the road,
you know, and they have played Allen, they have played
Yuleis Trinity, They're playing Lake Travis this week. And say
they have been on the road. That's no stranger to them.
But those are also really good teams. And so Midland

(14:41):
Legacy could be staring own three in the face and
I wouldn't. I will say that everything for them is
still out in front of them. The other team, there
are a couple of teams there that I think that
there may be some reason for concern. One of them
is Katie eighties zero and two. For the first time
in quite some time, they actually lost last week to
a task To see that, we had this note from
the guy who calls our games on Texan Line for Katie,

(15:03):
Michael Silvers, who said that it's the first time that
Katie has lost to a team three years and lost
the same team three years in a row since nineteen
ninety five when they lost to Climb three years in
a row, so that it just doesn't happen there. They
have been banged up, especially defensively, But I also think

(15:23):
that they are a team that needs to find their
identity in a running game. That's one thing that I'm
keeping an eye on. And in Bridisoto. Look, part of
it is a difficult schedule. They went and they got
molly wapped by a team in Georgia in week one,
and then they follow it up with a kind of
fits and starts, kind of incomplete performance. I would say
against a good obviously a good North Crowley team, I

(15:45):
worry a little bit about them finding consistency offensively, which
is something I didn't know that we were going to
be able to say. It's still up all out there
in front of them. But I would say that considering
what we've seen the first two weeks and then what
we saw last week for the open against Duncanville for
Duncanville when they played South Oak Cliff, I would say
those are team that is a team to keep an

(16:07):
eye on a team that could be a prop team
that you know. Matt Stepp brought up a point that
it would not be outside the realm of possibility to
see to Soto missed the playoffs in District eleven and
six A, and when you think about it, Duncanville probably
get into the playoffs, right walks Ahatchie has been very good.
You take a look at Cedar Hill, they've been excellent.
That only leads one spot and there are a lot
of good teams there in the Little Southwest Conference like

(16:30):
Lancaster who could grabbed that spot as well. So for
to Soto, they've got to figure out their offensive what
was pretty quickly or else just think could snowball on them?

Speaker 2 (16:37):
Yeah, no doubt about.

Speaker 1 (16:38):
Okay, Before before I give you the do the meanest
thing we do and give you three games and ask
you to pick one, tell me about what your recollection
is of and what you learned over time about Ga
Moore Because I my first ever lie play by play
game nineteen eighty two, a by the historic playoff game

(17:01):
Pilot Point and White Wright and Ga Moore was the coach,
and I did several games including during that four years
in a row state championship run at Salina that involved him.
And he was always a gentleman and a lot of
fun and had a good wit about him.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
But he could. He was He was a hard driver
as a head.

Speaker 1 (17:19):
Coach as well, and I guess that's how you win
eight state titles.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
And of course he passed away last Friday.

Speaker 3 (17:25):
Yeah, when he retired back in twenty eleven, he was
the winningest coach in Texas high school football history. He
broke what many people thought was going to be an
unbreakable record when he passed Gordon Wood for the most
wins in Texas high school football history. And a guy
who built a program in the If you want to

(17:46):
call this the modern age, I would call this the
pre modern age as far as building a program built
around culture and building a program built around an identity,
because you always knew what you were going to get
from Solina. You were always going to get an exceptional
run game, you were always going to get a ferocious defense,
and you were always going to get a team that

(18:09):
played to the echo.

Speaker 2 (18:10):
Of the whistle.

Speaker 3 (18:10):
I mean they, they would they You did not want
to play Solina, And it's remarkable when you take a look,
you can you can list out all of the accolades, right.
You know, he's retired as a winning his coach. He's
got the eighth state championships, he's got you know, he
was he was the architect behind the longest winning streak
in Texas high school football history. I mean, this guy,
you know, the four peaed every it goes on and on.

(18:33):
Uh in the end, he was just kind of a
country guy who who who liked coach and ball. He
was a rancher. He was a guy who who who
you know, enjoyed away from football. He enjoyed the quiet life.
I know. He gave an all timer speech where the
Texas High School Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which
was just full of the kind of wit and wisdom

(18:55):
you'd expect from a from from an old coach. He
was a you're exactly. He was a very gracious man.
But also when it was football time, it was business time.
And that's one thing I think is really is really
remarkable about him. And look, we're gonna there's always conversation
who's the greatest high school football coach in Texan high
school football history? And it's an open conversation. All I

(19:17):
can say is this is that the conversation absolutely includes
ga More. He has to be considered in that conversation
as the greatest coach in Texas high school football history.
It's simpletely because of the accolades and especially the way
that he did it, to go about and build that
program with the culture and the standards that he did.

(19:38):
I think that it was a real loss for the
Texa high school football community when he passed away last week.

Speaker 2 (19:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (19:42):
I think what might be the most amazing thing is
he did two stints at pilot Point and two stints
at Salina, won state championships of both. His ranch was
on far in the market four fifty five, about a
halfway between Pilot Point and Salona, so we could swing
back and forth basically, which is what he did.

Speaker 3 (19:59):
He was.

Speaker 2 (20:00):
This is amazing. He was.

Speaker 1 (20:01):
He was simply amazing. Okay, here we go. Most difficult
thing we do teach other. I give you three games
you transport to one. You tell me which one it
would be. One of those would be Westlake against the
Taska Sida, one would be South Oak Cliff Longview, and

(20:22):
one would be Salina and Gunner.

Speaker 2 (20:25):
Which of those three are you showing up?

Speaker 3 (20:27):
At the answer is going to be Westlake in a TASKAA.
Now that's due respect to a magic of state champions
Gunner and Solina, but I think that the size literally
both the physical size and also the depth size difference.
Here Planet four A Division one, which is almost certainly
going to five A next year. Taking last three A
Division two and Gunner, it feels like Selanna is going

(20:50):
to be a pretty clear favorite in that one topical.
You know, a non district gauntly continues with long View,
there will be a really raucous crowd, uh there with
long View take on south of but that'll be a
fun matchup. But the ANSWER's got to be Westlake and
attash Asda. While Westlake got back on the good foot
last week, going down in the Valley and drubbing an

(21:10):
overmatched Sanbando team, I think that that defense is starting
to come along with a young defense. But we know that,
you know, we know that the coach Tony Salazar is
going to get his guys up to speed as the
season goes on. This is a real gut check for
them because they are taking on one of the hottest
teams in Texas high school football and perhaps through two

(21:31):
weeks being mister Texas Football Player of the Year in
carde Max the running back or the quarterback rather for
a task caasda. This guy has been outrageous through two games,
including one game against Katie. He has eight hundred and
eighty total yards and twelve touchdowns. He had been on
another planet. And so it is up to this this

(21:53):
Westlake defense Matti Splinton company to find a way to
slow him down, which has been a tough sled for
every defense he've face of art. It's a whale of
a ball game and it'll be another interesting test for
west Like do you want to talk about travel? I
mean going down to play a team from the valley
and now they got trial to Houston. They are they're
getting those those miles on that on that bus.

Speaker 2 (22:15):
No doubt about him.

Speaker 1 (22:16):
Uh he's Greg Temper, editor in chief Dave Campbell's Texas
Football Magazine. You can catch his show. I've been day
losed as you have been by so many people. Hey,
aren't you guys doing that scoreboard show anymore? In the
answer is no, because FanDuel's not doing it anymore. Uh
So I'm doing this game on victory plus a Game
of the Week which by the way.

Speaker 2 (22:35):
Is South Olcliff long View this week and then and
then also available.

Speaker 1 (22:39):
On Victory Plus as well as obviously for free at
Texas Football dot Com. Is your show, you and Ashley
Pickle And And I won't say that I was actually
watching it while driving home, but I had it all.

Speaker 2 (22:56):
I had it all.

Speaker 3 (22:57):
We actually get that. We actually get that a lot.
I think we get a lot of like it's all
viewership to us, we can't tell when you're looking at
your screen, but like I would bet that we have
I know we have a number of people who just
like pop it on their phone and then put the
phone's face down in the passenger seat and then listen
to it. So texting football tonight ten thirty pm Friday

(23:17):
night wherever you stream.

Speaker 1 (23:18):
Absolutely, Hey, thanks TEP, appreciate it all right, talking guys,
all right, that's.

Speaker 2 (23:23):
Great, Tepper. I had it on. I did.

Speaker 1 (23:26):
I head it on in the in the truck driving back,
and as I went through the drive through to get
something to eat in Hillsboro on the drive back, but
I was watching the road. I just want to let
you know I had I had I had the app
pulled up so I could hear what was going on,
Just I just.

Speaker 2 (23:43):
Hang a lot of people know that, a lot of
folks doing the same thing with us right now.

Speaker 1 (23:46):
Yeah, yeah, exactly. Be careful out there, all right. More
