Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good afternoon, everybody.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
under the Zone.
Speaker 1 (00:04):
My name is Craig Away. Thanks so much for joining us.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
We're with you each and every weekday afternoon, Monday through Friday,
from two to five, helping you navigate the afternoon, whether
it's in the office or at home, or in the ultimobile,
whatever it might be, or hope it's going all right
for you. Us, of course, includes the producer of the program.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
That would be Cameron D. Parker.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas, as
in being named for his dad's favorite pro football team,
and it was at least at times his He's kind
of hit and miss on it right now, but he
is kind of fired up because we get to hear
some more from Brian Schottenheimer today.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Right, you're up for some shotty.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Sound today, love shoddy sound, A good afternoon, Craig did
might stand for Dunnaway, meaning Chuck Dunaway. We just commented,
let's go on our YouTube live stream, of course. Love
to have you guys listening wherever you are, especially in
the free IR Radio app but also streaming for free
on YouTube. Is that our Chuck in Houston in Facebook,
I don't know, is it Chuck from Houston. It might be,
It might be well, because you know the text line
(01:06):
Chuck from Houston usually refers to, of course the text line.
But Chuck comlinning from his YouTube profile, he said, yes, sir,
it is okay, good Chuck from Houston. You can either
have Chuck from Houston or Chuck Dunaway listening in on
today's program.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
Chuck glad to have you listen to that and everybody
else who's tuned in, and Chuck has already learned how
to communicate with us via the text line. We offer
that option to you. You certainly have the option to
do that, and it's a really simple elementary process. All
you do is by texting is the first word of
(01:41):
your text needs to be texas. That's our coding system
of they at work. So you text the word texas
and then your question or comment to eight one five
three zero. So text the word texas follow by your
question or comment to eight one five three zero. Stand
messaging in data rxpanply. Here's here's an example of this morning.
(02:03):
I'm looking at the text grid from this morning for
the morning Kickoff, which a year you know Monday through
Friday with you know, Mike cardboll Harge in the world
strongest Man.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Mark Henry Mark's in England, isn't he.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
He's in Scotland, djaying an event in Ireland.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
I think if I'm known he was a full on DJ,
I think I would have hired him the DJ my
wedding three years ago.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
I think I would have done that.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
I don't think you would have played air supply. I
guarantee you that I appreciate that.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
For example, though, somebody texted the Morning Kickoff and said, uh,
that's crazy wow for coach read Clearly, what this text
is referring to is that story that came out that
somebody shot through window and Andy Reid's office.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Did that come out in that Kingdom Dinament? I think
it was separate, and I'm guessing I could be wrong,
but I'm guessing. Imagine if you, you know, you do
this documentary and then that story comes out after you
you wrap up filming and producing.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Yeah, so maybe somebody didn't like how they were portrayed
in the documentary. I don't know anyway, nobody was injured
or anything like that, but someone had texted in about
that's crazy wow for coach Read. But they started off
the text with the word Texas. Like we said, it
says Texas, then it says that's crazy wow for coach Red.
(03:21):
So when you text the program, text the word Texas.
It can be all caps, it can be regular capital
T can be the lowercase.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
It doesn't matter.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Just type in the word Texas followed by your question
or comment. You text it to eight one, five, three zero.
I will keep you updated on what's going on. Did
Bobby what Junior just hit an inside the park home run?
I wouldn't be surprised. He is playing against the Texas Rangers. Yeah, yeah,
I think he just and no, no, no, no, no,
(03:50):
I don't It might have been earlier.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
Anyway, he's standing on second base right now, so maybe
he did earlier in the game. It's a one to
one ball game of the Rangers and Royals in the
bottom of the third in Kansas City.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
So that's going on. We'll keep you out, baby.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Also, Cam is keeping track of the Tour Championship, which
is underway in Atlanta at East Lake.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Got an early.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
Leaderboard for US, Justin Thomas leading the way so far
at six under. I didn't realize Craig, which tells you
how locked in I am to the Tour Championship. But
they got rid of the staggered scoring format it used
to be the last couple of years. You know, if
Scotty Scheffer was first in the standings heading into the
Tour Championship, he would start at ten under, and if
Roy was second, he'd be eight under, and then if
(04:30):
you were like third, fourth and fifth, seven under, et.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Cetera, et cetera.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
Yeah, every year level starts level and you know, Scotty
Scheffer's birdy two of the first three holes, but Justin
Thomas six under as he makes the turn. So far,
Colin Morrikyle of five under through fourteen holes, and then
Ludwig Oberg, the former Texas Tech Red Raider at four under,
with Tommy Fleetwood and Nick Taylor and Sam Burns all
at four unders. So the guys look very hot and
(04:57):
sweaty because it's.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
Georgia in August.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
It's August, and that means it's probably ninety six percent humidity.
Once again, another reason why they should probably move this
tournament away from Hot Lanta.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
They call it Hot Lanta for a reason. This is
this is why they moved the PGA out of August.
It's the number one.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
There were other reasons, but that's the number one reason
that they moved the PGA out of August. Too many
complaints about hot and oppressive for a major championship, and
so they moved it out and moved it back into May,
where it was for many, many years until well into
the seventies. I'd say mid seventies is when they moved
(05:36):
it to August, and then it just got you know,
beastly hot in someplace. That's like I said, I pointed
out it was actually in August, like in sixty eight
at Pecan Valley in San Antonio, but then it.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
Moved back into May because Jack won it.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
In seventy one and I did that I think at
Durrow and that was like in May. So then so
so they it kind of fluctuated back and forth. You know,
when people point out about that nobody's ever won the
modern Grand Slam of Golf, because the only really acknowledged
Grand Slam with Bobby Jones US Open, US Amateur, British Open,
(06:14):
British Amter, because that was kind of because it was
before the Masters, which of course Bobby Jones founded and
the PGA wasn't on its own footing, but once it
was and then it was established. The person who's come
closest to winning it was Ben Hogan in nineteen fifty three,
and the reason he didn't, well, certainly one of the reasons,
(06:35):
if not the number one reason that he didn't win
it is because the PGA and the Open Championship are
on the same week or staggered only by a few
days or something, and so.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
He couldn't play both.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
And that year he elected to play the Open and
he won it, and it's the only time that he
won it because the rest of the time he was
committed to the PGA. And then they finally separated the events,
but by then, you know, it was just too hard
for guys to win it. The Tiger Slam different issue,
the back end of one set of majors, in the front.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
End the first two of the next year. Was that
year that he.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Did that, like oh four or something, when the Tiger
did the Tiger Slam.
Speaker 1 (07:16):
When he won that, he won.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
I think it was it stretched from four to five,
because I believe so, No.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
Four.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
I think the first major championship was the PGA, but
It began with him winning the Masters, the US Open,
the Open Championship, and then he I believe he won
the PJ and O five.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
Let me let me double check look at that that
was the Tiger, because I don't think he won it
on this I.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Was thinking it was the Open and the PG eight.
And then he won the Masters in the US Open
the next year. It was four in a row, but
it was not four in the same calendar year that
he did it. And and that's the other as close
as anyone has come uh to doing that. It's it's
very difficult, but there's like we said, there's a that's
(07:59):
the main reason that the PGA was moved from August
back in the spring in May.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
I'm sorry. So it was two thousand. He won the
US Open, the Open Championship, and PGA, and then he
won the Masters in one so he held all four
major championships at that time.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
That's it.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
Yes, he never technically has won all four majors in
the same calendar year.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
Nobody has. Nobody has, but he won three in the
same calendar year. Ben Hogan won three in the same
calendar year. That's as close as anybody's come to that.
This guy is capable of doing it, but so was
Tiger and others through the year, Jack Nicholas, Tom Watson
certainly capable of it. The one he Tom Watson never
won was the PGA. The one Arnold Palmer never won
(08:45):
was the PGA. The one Sam Steen never won was
the US Open. The one Phil Mickelson has never won
has been the US Open. So there aren't too many
what is it now six who have the career Slam
after Rory did it, And even Scheffler's not there yet
because he only has the masters in the PGA and
the Open, so he still has one more.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
He's got to get a.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
US Open and he has a shot at Shinnacock Hills
next June, which has been pointed out that the final
round of next year's US Open will fall on his
thirtieth birthday, so we'll see if all the stars alive
and all that kind of stuff. But you said he's
often a good start, even though Justin Thomas has the lead.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
Yes, okay, And that text came in and said, I
recently saw some footage of JT playing as an amateur.
Didn't know that was him walking or if he was
riding a chicken. If you've seen, if you've seen what
JT looked like as an amateur. I think JT describes
himself as like he was fifty pounds soaking wet because
(09:44):
he was a very.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
Skinny little dude. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
And actually, you know the first event he ever played
in Craig in your hometown at Seigsfield. Yeah, I think
he was fourteen years old and he looks like he
might be eleven playing and I think he the first round.
Speaker 1 (10:00):
He was like one over par or two over. He
was playing pretty well for an amateur.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
So hey, the one time I played set Field that
was like sixteen, a friend of mine's family were members,
and he said.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
You want to go play?
Speaker 2 (10:12):
I was like, really, yeah, okay, I'll shoot one hundred,
but I'll play enjoy it.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Yeah, that's exactly right.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
So anyway, somebody else that they enjoyed My comments on
the dct F show earlier with Tepper and Pickle gonna
be a great showing highlighting Texas high school football.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Todd, thank you that you know.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
Greg Tepper, of course, is the editor in chief of
David Campbell Texas Football Magazine, and he's on this program
every Tuesday and we talk about, you know, all the
preseason stuff in the magazine, but when we get into
the regular season, we talk college at high school football
as we do now, but it's on a week by
week basis and the top ten polls because his staff
compiles the top ten polls. That used to be an
(10:55):
AP panel of twenty five of us from across the state.
I was on that as well, but then AP he
didn't want to mess with it anymore, and the crew
at Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine said we can compile it,
and it was like cool, and TEP will occasionally you'll
text me or call me on a Sunday and say, hey,
we got the battle come out of the more.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
What do you think about, you know whatever? Rerafeio?
Speaker 2 (11:18):
Should it be number one in two A Division one
or something like that, and we'll chat and so occasionally
he'll ask me to have a little input on that deal,
which I don't mind, but we have input on each
other's show. So he comes on here every Tuesday, and
then on Thursdays they do a daily show. He had
Ashley Pickle do a show d CT of Today Texas
Football Today online at Texas Football dot Com for Dave
(11:42):
Campbell's Texas Football magazine, and they like to refer to
it as Thursdays because I go on with him on
he used to be Tuesdays, and then they then they
decided they want to do it on Thursday. So every Thursday, Yeah,
around twelve forty five in the afternoon, I'm on with
them and we were talking.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
He asked he was as astounded as many people.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Were in the luncheon that we were a part of
on campus yesterday cam when it was revealed by Drew Martin,
the Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Services, because he
said he was stunned to hear about it that it
was the first time ever that the University of Texas
(12:26):
had been ranked number one in the preseason poll. I've
run across more people who have just been absolutely just
thunderstruck by that just couldn't believe that they'd never been
a preseason number one, never been Lots of programs had
been a preseason number one until this year. Not Texas
had never been a preseason number one. And so Tepper,
(12:50):
having me on the show, said he was also surprised
by that. I said, all of us were, really I said,
the one year I pointed to more than any other
that I thought they could have been a preseason number
one was nineteen seventy because they were just coming off
winning the national championship. In sixty nine, they had the
vast majority of their team back. They didn't have James
Streep back, but they had Eddie Phillips a quarterback. I
still had Steve Worcester in the backfield, still had a
(13:12):
great defense, offensive line, all that, so they were largely back,
but they were not the preseason number one as in
the prior year Ohio State, which had won the national
title in sixty eight when Rex Kern was an outstanding sophomore.
They had the sensational sophomore group from Ohio State and
they won the national championship in sixty eight, so they
were definitely going to be the preseason number one in
(13:33):
sixty nine, and they were, and they stayed number one
all the way until they were upset by Michigan bo
Scham Beckler's first year, and they got upset in sixty nine,
and that enabled Texas to jump to number one. In
Arkansas at number two, and it led to the big
shootout in Fayetteville December sixth, nineteen sixty nine, which Texas
won fifteen to fourteen, then beat Notre Name of the
Cotton boll Texas finished unanimous number one. So I thought
(13:56):
maybe the next year seventy Texas would start the year
number one. They did not again Ohio State with now
senior quarterback Rex Current and all those other buck Eyes.
They were number one, but they got beat in the
Rose Bowl by Jim Blunkett and Stanford. Texas meanwhile rolled
through the rest of the regular season, destroyed Arkansas forty
(14:16):
two to seven in the regular season finale, ascended to
number one. They were crowned national champions in the coaches
poll by United Press International put it out instead of
ESPN now is United UPI. They were number one in
the coaches poll, and in those days, the coaches took
their final poll and crowned their national champion at the
(14:41):
end of the regular season, because the coaches back then
considered the Bulls as more of a reward and not
part of the totality of the season. So they were
number one and they do have a share of that title. However,
it was they banged up Texas that lost to Notre
Dame in the rematch from the prior year in the
Cotton Bowl Notre Dame one that game, and that plus
(15:02):
the Ohio State loss in the Rose Bowl allowed at
that point allowed Nebraska, who beat LSU and the Orange
Bowl to go number one. So Texas and Nebraska shared
the title nineteen seventy, but they were not a preseason
number one, so it's the first time for that. So anyway,
if you have something you want to get to us
(15:22):
on the text line, that's how you do it. You
text the word Texas followed by your question comment to
eight one, five to three zero. Standard messaging and data
rates may apply.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
All right.
Speaker 2 (15:33):
Up next, we're going to hear from Ryan schottenhebber Well
update what's going on on the baseball scoreboard as well.
Speaker 1 (15:39):
When we continue on thirteen under.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
The zone, it's the Craig Way Show with the voice
of the Texas Longhorns in Hall of Fame Broadcasting.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
Craig Way updating the small scoreboard for you.
Speaker 1 (16:01):
They gone to the bottom of the fourth in Kansas City.
The Royals lead the Rangers.
Speaker 2 (16:05):
Two to one in that contest, and again the Rangers,
given another opportunity, could have made up ground yesterday with
the Tigers finishing off the Astros couldn't do it.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
Fell by the wayside again. Unfortunately.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
You know we were talking about amazing heart difficult to believe
stats like the fact that long warn football had never
been a preseason number one ranked team. I'll give you
another stat. Do you know that going into today's game?
Today's game in Denver, the Los Angeles Dodgers since the
(16:38):
All Star breaking won fourteen games and the Colorado Rockies
have won fifteen games. Wow, that tells you the slump
the Dodger and they lost last night. They are out
with two nothing leading the bottom of the first Freddie
Freeman a two run homer in Clayton Kershaw's pitching for
LA in that one. And they've got another huge series
with the Padres. They swept them last weekend in LA.
You have to go two San Diego. Padre's only one back.
(17:00):
They had the one game lead going into LA last
week and the Dodger swept all three, got up two.
Now the lead for LA down to one. That's a big,
big weekend series starting tomorrow night in San Diego. But
they both finished four game series today. Can I ask
you a first take question? Sure, what is your concern
level with the Dodgers now I would do it in
(17:21):
more of a steven A voice, but I can't.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
What would your concerned level? I want to yell, Or
you're a Dodger fan, what is your confer not be concerned?
Speaker 2 (17:32):
On a level of one to ten, seven, maybe eighty.
Every time they start the game, someone in and somebody
gets hurt, and then the rest of the team just
goes south in a slump. And that's what's happening right now.
And then Otani got a hit by a line drive line.
It looks like he's all right. They were planning to
give him the day off today anyway, and he's off
today and they think he'll be okay for the series
(17:56):
in San Diego. But he hasn't pitched well of Lady either.
He took the loss last night and since Max months
he went back on the injured list. They're not hitting.
There's just a nighting Mooie. Betts is not hitting. And
he had a little spurt where he came out of
it for a little bit, especially against Santigo. Now he's
gone kind of back into the slump. Will Smith was
leading the Nashley getting hitty has been kind of south
so as a team, and not only that, and this
(18:19):
was the thing that was really bothering me, and nobody
was saying it was kind of like the Emperor's New Close.
Nobody was really saying anything about it. Teoscar Hernandez is
a defensive liability. His the war number when he's in
right field is like minus night.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
It's not good.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
And he's really struggling to play the outfield.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
And this was a weird thing. Jim Bowden does a.
Speaker 2 (18:46):
Baseball podcast show, I think on Serious Exam or whatever.
He said the Dodgers were lying about a meeting that
happened after their Monday night loss to the Rockies, where
Dave Roberts and Andrew Friedman, the general manager, were seen
down below the stands or whatever underneath near the clubhouse
and talking to Mookie bats And Robert Slater said, and
(19:07):
they said, well, you know what that's about. It's about
Tao te Oscar and anders is a is a defensive liability.
They want Mookie to move back to right field, and
blah blah blah and so on and so forth. And
Robert said, that's not true. He said, we were talking
about hitting and trying to get him more consistent again,
and Jim Boonden just basically called him out and said
they're lying. He said, they're not being truthful about this.
(19:30):
They have a right to keep it quiet, but the
general managers's not down there to find that out, you know,
so on and so forth. So he's basically calling him
out for that. I would say this, it'd be difficult
for Mooki to move back to right field right now
because they're short in the infield Max Mnths. He's injured,
Tommy Edmund's injured, They've got another players hay Saw Kim
(19:50):
is injured, They've got three infielders out injured. It'd be
difficult to make that move right now. But anyway, they're
struggling and the podres. Other than getting swept by the
Dodgers last weekend, which was a big other they went
from being up one game to down two. But they've
hung close and like Oral Hersheiser said last night, they're
not going away. So other than that, they've been really
(20:12):
good of late and that's going to be a crucial
series this weekend.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
Well talk about that, all.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
Right, Let's talk about the Cowboys and Brian Schottenheimer, the
head coach, and we'll get his thoughts on where the
team is uh and uh, you know, also you know
the adjustments that they'll make this weekend. And yes, yeah,
the the again the elephant in the room, a situation
about Mikah Parsons.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
So here's some sound from shotting Calvin.
Speaker 5 (20:40):
Watson's Dallas Morning News. So did you get a lot?
Asked some practice yesterday?
Speaker 1 (20:46):
They get a lot? What you love butt kicking in practice?
I love bke kicking. I don't know.
Speaker 6 (20:53):
I thought when you're the head coach, you always win.
That's kind of the that's kind of the cool thing.
But uh, that was good. It was good work. I
thought the guys did a much better job of staying up.
I was pleased with that. We wanted to have a
physical practice. I thought we did it. And some really
good clips today to show the guys to teach off
of today's.
Speaker 5 (21:12):
Practice and Friday night can help some guys who are
on the bubble, of guys who are on a depth
truck trying.
Speaker 7 (21:17):
To move up.
Speaker 1 (21:18):
Yeah, it's huge.
Speaker 6 (21:18):
I mean constant evaluation. As you know, I mean there's
always there's position battles. There's guys posturing up for just
making the team, but for starting jobs or backup jobs.
Reserves things like that. I think the Special Team is
always going to be something fun to watch. That's where
guys kind of, you know, push themselves over the edge
if you will. But last night was very physical. I
think tonight will be very physical. I think we are
(21:40):
definitely we feed off the energy of the fans. It
was great last night to have the fans there and
our guys definitely enjoyed being out there and having the
noise and the support and all that stuff.
Speaker 7 (21:52):
Clarence Hill d LLS Cowboys.
Speaker 8 (21:54):
You talked the other day about if he had good prices,
some guys may not play ninety to see them if
you come to a conclusion of who you may not
play on Friday night.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
Yeah, it's still working through it.
Speaker 6 (22:04):
But again, if we practice again like we do, or
like we did last night tonight, there might be a
few less guys to play.
Speaker 7 (22:11):
Jayden Blue had played the first two priets of game.
Will he play? Do you need to see him out there? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (22:17):
He looked good yesterday. He was on a little bit
of a rep count yesterday. But again I think right
now we're looking at it with limited limitations, and you
should see him get some action and we're excited to
watch him play.
Speaker 9 (22:28):
Todd Ar's were with the ESPN after practice to see
as a rocker, with Leo Collins and Tyler Smith as booker,
I assume, well, you're starting.
Speaker 7 (22:36):
To smile over this.
Speaker 1 (22:37):
What uh?
Speaker 7 (22:38):
When do you see that after practice? You see the
guys working together.
Speaker 9 (22:41):
What does that make you think?
Speaker 6 (22:44):
Brotherhood, respect, understanding that it's going to take all of us,
you know, and that you know, I love when the
young guys. I'm gonna talk about Tyler Smith who was
a young guy, still kind of a young guy, but
now he's leaning into rookie and Lyle has been amazing.
(23:04):
You know, he's putting his wisdom into guys. And what
I love about that Again, you guys know me, I'm
a little bit smoltye when it comes to this stuff.
But like, we got the legends back today, you know,
and I think there's something like thirty five legends going
to be here today, some Hall of famers. I hope
those guys are leaning into some of our players, and.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
It gets you excited, It warms your heart.
Speaker 6 (23:25):
But again, there is an understanding from the team that
you know, it's gonna take everybody, and so to see
those guys, take time and invest in those other players
to make them better, which coincidentally makes the team better,
I think is what you want as a head coach.
Speaker 7 (23:39):
What's your philosophy with captains? Do you have season long
guys week to week? How do you go?
Speaker 6 (23:43):
Yeah, the way we're going to do it, Todd, We're
gonna finalize it probably after final cuts. Is I'm more
of a you have seasonal guys and then every game
there'll be a captain as well, someone that's deserving that's
been you know, being a great teammate, performing well. But
I do believe that you need to have captains throughout
the season. Why that, I just think that again, that's
the core of your leadership of your team. It's going
(24:03):
to be voted on by the players. It's not going
to be voted on by the coaches. They know who
they want, you know, speaking and representing them. And there's
a lot of different ways to do it. And that's
just where I feel it means something to me to
have the CE on your chest if you've been voted
that you by your teammates, you know, it's a I
think it's pretty cool to be recognized to say, hey,
(24:24):
I was a captain in twenty twenty five of the
Dallas Cowboys. And that's pretty cool.
Speaker 10 (24:28):
Yeah, I'm sure the athletic a younger player came up
to you and ask you, coach, what do I need
to do in a preseason game? What are you looking
for in the preseason games? For me, I have a
chance to make to see what would you tell them?
Speaker 6 (24:40):
Well, it depends on the position, John, I mean, you know,
very very different. The big thing you hear me say
all the time is consistency. You know, can you take
the things that we're doing in the media room to
the practice field and then from the practice field to
the game field. I think that's really really important. The
other thing I would say, and they all attempt to
do it. And you guys have been talking about cut
(25:01):
downs for about four weeks, so I don't think you
guys help. But don't read the numbers, man, Like why
would you read the numbers? Like this is a physical game,
and you know, don't don't get caught up in that. Well, hey,
they might only keep five or six receivers and I'm
the seventh guy right now, Like, why would you do that? Like,
we haven't made any decisions yet. We haven't named any starters,
and so just go play. Go play the game that
(25:22):
you love to play. And if you play well and
you do things consistently and you make plays and you
show up on film, I think that you've done everything
you can do to make this football team.
Speaker 11 (25:33):
Thank Erris four star Tolder. Any injury updates when you're
two tight ends, premis fans four when he saw Schoomaker
come up this year.
Speaker 6 (25:39):
Yeah, Brev's doing better a getting no timetable for his return.
He's doing great, working the butt off. And Scooney got
danged a little bit, got a little concussion. I don't
think it's anything significant, but he's in the protocol.
Speaker 11 (25:50):
Back in twenty twenty three, Mike McCarthy have mentioned that
Hunter Lky's last preseason game put him on the roster.
Is there any other guys you can think of hearing
your time here that live done that?
Speaker 12 (26:05):
No?
Speaker 6 (26:05):
I mean we you know, we have an idea. You know,
going into the season finale, guys were were excited to
see Nick. It's not okay, this guy can do it.
Some guys they do jump off the film and you're like, okay,
if you play the way Hunter did in that last
preseason game.
Speaker 1 (26:20):
You're like, yeah, he's earned the right.
Speaker 6 (26:22):
Again, the bottom line is you want to earn a right, like,
none of these spots are going to be given. We're
not given a spot to a player because of this
or that. They have to be earned. And I believe
that that's the way it should be. And if you're
going to follow your mantra and the central theme of
your program, which is compete every day, then again it's
not going to be just one preseason game. Hunter Lepke
at the time was doing very very well. I'm sure
(26:45):
in that last game, I don't remember being being you know,
quite honest with you. I don't remember what he did,
but he was trending that way, to say the least,
and it certainly obviously put him over the edge.
Speaker 2 (27:00):
Okay, so there's some sound from Bryan Schottenheimer, the head coach.
You a heard him talking about what they're gonna do
with Jayden Blue some limited work, but excited to see
him go. He had a really good practice yesterday, so
we'll see. Of course, the Cowboys finish the preseason tomorrow night.
(27:21):
They played the Atlanta Falcons. To warnick, will you be
watching any of that, Cameron, I don't think so. No,
I don't think so.
Speaker 11 (27:28):
Now.
Speaker 3 (27:28):
I think at this point you kind of know what
this team is. I'm disappointed in Joe Milton. I think
I think Patriots fans got to be pretty pissed, right
because think about it, New England won their final regular
season game of the year last year and they dropped
from they lost it would have been the second pick
in the draft, and they fell to what four or five? Yeah,
(27:49):
because Joe Milton played an incredible game and it was
a good enough game to where Jerry Jones and Stephen
Jones and Will McClay decided to go after him.
Speaker 1 (27:57):
And now both sides are unhappy.
Speaker 3 (27:59):
The Patriot could have Abdull Carter or Travis Hunter, and
I think they'll be very happy with Will Campbell from Alabama.
But you know, both sides. But I think Milton's is
definitely an upgrade over Trey Lance. At the same time,
I don't think the Cowboys have a I'm not Dak
goes down, and you know we have now a large
(28:19):
enough sample size to where he's probably going to miss
a game or two this season, maybe more. Yeah, I
don't feel great about Joe Milton stepping in, but Hey,
maybe maybe he plays great tomorrow against the third and
four stringers of Let me ask you this, and I
have a specific reason practice. Did you watch any of
the game against Baltimore.
Speaker 1 (28:38):
Just clips highlights? Did you see Cooper Rush? Yeah, tough, right,
I don't. I don't think that's an upgrade. I mean,
I don't. I don't think it's a downgrade, is what
I'm saying. I don't think so either. Yeah, You're right.
Speaker 3 (28:50):
I think a lot of that too, is probably because
Cooper Rush was in Kellen Moore's system for what like
five years, and I think Kellen Moore no that we
went for and hours the starter, right, I think Cooper
Rush was a quarterback who he wasn't going to make
the plays that were going to hurt you. Right, He's
a very safe bad at quarterback. And he also I
(29:13):
mean Kelly exactly, and Kellen Moore probably knew what his
limitations were. And so you know, maybe for Schottenheimer, he's
got to figure out Joe Milton's limitations, what he's good at,
what he's not good at. You know, That's why it's
so important for a quarterback to have a good quarterback
coach or offensive courtner to understand, Hey, what am I
asking him?
Speaker 1 (29:32):
This guy?
Speaker 3 (29:33):
Am I asking too much? Am I asking not enough?
So you know, obviously, Dak Prescott's Dak Prescott. So hopefully
Cowboys will not have to turn to Joe Milton. But
it's a very long season acts on the wrong side
of thirty. He's at his injury issues his entire careers,
coming off an injury the past season. There's a good
chance that Joe Milton will see some mattion this year. Okay, hey,
(29:54):
if you're out there driving, be careful out there. I
mean here just southwest of the Tenny Backer Bridge and
hard by the by Lake Austin.
Speaker 2 (30:04):
We can tell you it is pouring rain. It's coming
down here in buckets and sheets and torrential torrential elements.
So be careful out there, no matter where you are.
If you've hitting that heavy duty rain up next inconceivable
some might think that it's inconceivable. We get that my
train in August, but it's it's pouring down right now.
Inconceivable is next year on thirteen under the Zone. Second
hour of the program. Here on thirteen under the Zone,
(30:26):
Craig Way alongside of the producer Cameron Parker, glad to
have you with us on a Thursday afternoon, was gets
caught up on a couple of things. As I mentioned,
Rangers wrapping up the series with the Royals. Kansas City
is still leading five to four, Texas batting with two
outs from the top of the sixth inning there at Kaufman's.
Speaker 1 (30:42):
Do you ever see a ball game there? I have not.
Have you gone up when when Gino was working the Royals?
Speaker 2 (30:50):
Yes, I did go one time when when he was
with the Royals. I was up there for then this
takes back a few years Big twelve Football Media Days.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
Oh and went out for a game against the White Hawks.
Speaker 2 (31:02):
And and I'll tell you that Ballpark two have been
built and opened in nineteen seventy three, the remodeling that
they did on it when they went from artificial turf
to natural grass, and just in what they did with
the fences while leaving the fountains intact and all this.
So it's really nice. It's very to be a redone
(31:23):
re mastered big league ballpark. It's very nice. It's a
nice ballpark.
Speaker 3 (31:28):
We live in this you know, day and Age Craig,
where it feels like every six years the city is
getting a brand new, you know, sports stadium Kansas City.
It's done a good job both with Kaufman and Arrowhead.
Instead of just like, hey, we're gonna tear it down
and build a new one, they just add to it,
you know, and the right across the park and one
another similar with DKR, Like I don't think De Carr
will ever be torn down and build a new one.
(31:48):
They're just going to keep adding to it, right And
there's also a lack of real real estate space in Austin,
Texas and Kansasy is a fantastic city, but we're something
to be said about Kansas City able to you know,
renovate their stadiums versus just demanding a brand new stadium
every twenty years.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
Right now, these stadiums are fifty years old now there.
I know there were discussions about a downtown ballpark. They're
near the power and light district, near where the arena is,
where the T Mobile Center is, and that's all nice
down there, but they said it would cause all kinds
of issues and problems if they did that down there.
So we'll see how it ultimately turns out there. But
(32:26):
it's five to four in that contest and that's with
two outs and six Los Angeles leading at Colorado five
to one. That is in the bottom of the third
inning there at coors Field Tour Championship leader Board update.
Speaker 3 (32:42):
Justin Thomas seven hundred and through fourteen. Your clubhouse leader
right now is Colin Moricawa. He's tried a sixty four,
had a chance to equalize JT's seven underscore on the
par five eighteenth, didn't go his way. Bad drive off
the tea with a fair metal. But JT at seven
(33:02):
under Moricawa big shot, Bob McIntyre at six under par
than Scotty Scheffler at three under he's just making the turn,
and then Roy mccroy also at three under when eagle birdie,
I think at the three under, so Scotty and Roy
number one and number two in the FedEx Cup standings
currently four back at Justin Thomas, who is on the
(33:22):
difficult par three the famous fifteenth toll Craig over two
hundred yards just straight over water, kind of similar to
I do want to say the island green, Well, I
guess the island green the seventeenth at TBC saw grass
a little bit, but there's.
Speaker 1 (33:37):
Real estate behind the green on this one a little
bit more real estate.
Speaker 3 (33:40):
It's also way longer, but the green is a lot
bigger than the island greens.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
It's a very tough shot.
Speaker 2 (33:49):
We talked about this yesterday and it's worth repeating. I
think is the deal we actually it was on Tuesday.
We were discussing this the business of of Scotty's place
this season, Scheffler's place at the end of the year,
regardless of what happens in Atlanta this weekend. Now, Scheffler
(34:11):
was asked yesterday and press conference about all this, how
you feel about not having the staggered start where you
have the lead, and of course you know he won
won the Tour championship last year despite not playing the
best over the four days because he had the staggered leaked.
And his line yesterday was something like, ah, I guess
(34:35):
I can't go sandbagging, you know that sort of thing.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
He talked about that and handled it pretty well.
Speaker 2 (34:42):
He actually said he said he actually likes this better
that they start on level footing on all this kind
of thing, and.
Speaker 1 (34:50):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (34:52):
I would just say my problem is with the way
some have labeled this that if they win this the
FedEx Cup champion, which supposedly means the the best golfer
in the world.
Speaker 1 (35:06):
That's ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (35:08):
It should be treated as an elevated championship.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
Just this this.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
Spot shy of a major, kind of like the Players
Championship something like that.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
I'm okay with that, but it's not.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
It shouldn't be the be all end all to the deal.
I mean, we know the number one golfer in the
world is he's won five tournaments, including two majors. You're
going to tell me that if Justin Thomas has a
big weekend this weekend and wins it, he's the best
golfer in the world.
Speaker 1 (35:36):
No, he's not. He's won one event this year, Andy
jt one thing.
Speaker 2 (35:40):
Yes, yeah, he's won one, you know, and I like him,
you know, and if and if he wins it, that's fine.
Rory's had a good year, He's won a major, he
finally completed the Career Slam, but his year wasn't as
good as Scheffler's. So he shouldn't be lauded as the
best golfer in the world. If you win the FedEx Cup,
that's all I'm saying.
Speaker 3 (36:01):
Let me ask you your input on this. So Jamie Kennedy,
I think is what Sky Sports had an idea for,
you know, reimagining Tour Championship. The golf tournament used to
be played here in Austin, Texas. The WGC Dell Technologies
match play no longer exists. There is no longer the
WGC event is also no longer a match play event.
(36:23):
But you can't play it here in August, no matter,
even if it's it's true. But first of all, the
second round would be wiped out today the raining. Now,
I wouldn't say play it here in Austin, Texas unfortunately.
But what if the final event of the season, Craig,
you do? And this this is Jamie Kennedy's idea. Twenty
four golfers. Okay, the top eight golfers get a first
(36:44):
round by and it's all match play format all the
way through the championship.
Speaker 1 (36:49):
I would like that better than this, I think so too.
Speaker 3 (36:52):
Now, of course, again, you could see Scotty Scheffer, he
could lose, you know, in this first the first round
to you know throw in.
Speaker 1 (36:59):
Let's say pack can't lee.
Speaker 3 (37:00):
But the same time, Patrick Cantley could go out and
still win this week, so it won't be a perfect fix.
But I do think because there is no match play
left in the PGA Tours. There's match play of course
in the Ryder Cup, but that's all we really have
in terms of match play, why not bring it back
and use it for the final tour event, just see
how it goes.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
I wouldn't I wouldn't have a problem with this. Here.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
Here's here's where I stand on this, as long as
professional golf, and I'm not talking about Live Oh by
the way, cam Uh, you know, I did want to.
Speaker 1 (37:33):
Let you know that story. You're still getting the press releases.
Speaker 2 (37:35):
I'm getting the press releases. So just want to let
you know. You know where Live Golf is this week.
Speaker 1 (37:42):
Chicago.
Speaker 2 (37:43):
They've been there. Miami, No, but it's closer to Chicago.
They're in Michigan. Okay, So yeah, they're in They're in
Michigan this week for Live Golf.
Speaker 1 (37:55):
I just wanted to let you know that. And Live
Michigan sounds like a pr campaign by the state. Yeah. Well,
let's see.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
They're at a course called the Cardinal at Saint John's.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
In Plymouth, Michigan. Okay, So there.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
It is all right anyway, as long as you are
deciding major championships for the tour during the season, which
makes all the sense. Yeah, Masters in April, gn May, US,
(38:33):
Open in June, Open Championship July. As long as you're
doing that, you cannot have it be a like an
NFL or Major League Baseball or NBA or NHL style
playoff format because you're already deciding your major champions during
(38:54):
the year, because then it would devalue or would attempt
to devalue those major champions Go, those are all great,
those are major champions But this is the deal where
you're the champion golf for the year. No, it's not
not if you've played your major championships earlier in the year.
So what you either pick this event as a standalone event.
Speaker 1 (39:16):
You can call it the.
Speaker 2 (39:17):
Tour championship if you want, just like I have the
Players Championship, but it's not as big as a major.
Speaker 1 (39:22):
Shouldn't have it like that.
Speaker 2 (39:23):
And and I like, if you are going to mess
with it that much that the idea that you talked
about there made more sense to have it as match play,
have a buy have those who have posted what you've
done during the year has to stand for something. Yeah,
now I know there are people who gripe about baseball
(39:44):
playoffs and say it's watering down.
Speaker 1 (39:47):
It's right. No, no, it's not. The teams that win.
Speaker 2 (39:49):
The division still get buys the top two seeds. They
still have a chance. Sometimes it's a detriment we have
those buys. It's it is banged up. Some teams that
got buys, like the Dodgers or the Astros.
Speaker 13 (40:06):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (40:06):
Some teams that have gotten the Phillies. Teams that have
gotten first round bys have have wound up, you know,
on the short end of things afterwards. But again, if
your team ready to play at that point, it's on
the ball club. So you can't have a playoff style
format if you've already decided your major.
Speaker 1 (40:25):
Champions or in a year. That's my take. That's just
how I feel about it.
Speaker 2 (40:29):
On the text line, we had somebody about the about
the our man Bevo Lance Jason to talk about the
change of Cracker Barrel. Like we said, it's a really
plain just playing. All it says is cracker Barrel still
in whatever black and yellow and there's no artist design
(40:52):
or anything like that. He said, I don't care about
the logo change. I'm more upset about the menu change.
Sometimes their warm ambiance could be crossing in the category
of dusty and dirty. You know what, My wife says
the same thing. She said, he used to be kitchy
and really cool. Now you're going there, it's just kind
of a little shabby and run down looking, he said.
Why is the change? Who else compared to down home
(41:15):
comfort food cooking. It's a great, great point about the
story about the Delta and United Airlines being sued for
selling window seats without windows. Somebody said, window seats without windows,
that must be breezy as hell. And then somebody else
in the cracker barrel. Last time I went to cracker Barrel,
after a forty five minute wait, I'm gold to practice
(41:37):
slap shots in the back alley with the biscuits. So
there you are, and we're gonna hear more from Brian
Schottenheimer coming up here momentarily. But Chuck in Houston says, hey,
Joe Milton is not good at all. He's echoing what
you were saying, Cammy, he said. And by the way,
if Dak goes down, it's all over. But the crime anyway,
as has been proven over the past few years, I.
Speaker 3 (42:00):
Mean whether NFL teams outside of the Philadelphia Eagles in
twenty whatever, sixteen seventy eighteen can go and win the
Super Bowl. Wh they're a number one quarterback goes down. Yeah,
it's very few, and it does not happen often. It
doesn't have It does not happen often.
Speaker 2 (42:16):
But the Hey put it this way, as a Rams fan,
if Matthew Stafford is unable to play due to this
back thing, and they act like it's not big deal,
they're downplaying it. The more they protest loudly, the more
concerned I get.
Speaker 1 (42:28):
But if he's unable to play, you think I'm putting
my faith in Jimmy g.
Speaker 2 (42:34):
Stetson Bennett, I'd probably feel better about He's looked pretty
good in the preseason, actually, Jimmy g really.
Speaker 1 (42:41):
All right, So we'll see kind of think for Arch.
Speaker 2 (42:44):
For Arch and then which gets into the whole deal
about whether Arch is gonna come back after this Sopho
war you or not. He's like, I'm not even thinking
about that stuff, which is good.
Speaker 1 (42:56):
All right.
Speaker 2 (42:57):
Up next, we'll hear more from Brian Shott Shoddy sound
coming up when we continue on thirteen Under the Zone.
Speaker 4 (43:07):
Welcome back to The Craig Way Show and the Voice
of the Longhorns, Craig What follow Craig on social media
at Horn Boys.
Speaker 2 (43:21):
Here's the story for you on a Thursday afternoon, correct
me if I brong, Cameron. Have we been hearing for
some time that ESPN was done with baseball but they
weren't that they were done at the end of this year.
Speaker 3 (43:35):
They were done, and then the MLB was like, actually,
we want you back, right, Wasn't that kind of how
it went?
Speaker 2 (43:41):
Yeah, here's what's happened and this It was announced today
that that Major League Baseball and also ESPN have a
framework agreement and and first one, let me start with
the simple part. ESPN will continue to broadcast around thirty
(44:04):
regular season games, but not Sunday night baseball. I think
that's a standalone thing that MLB really values because they
get good ratings from that. They would move to a
different night during the week, and the games on the
network would remain exclusively what TBS doing a Tuesday night game.
(44:26):
The games on the network would remain exclusive, meaning viewers
would only able to be able to watch these matchups
through ESPN. The agreement would begin next season. Okay, that's
the first part of the known part. Now listen to this.
Here's the carrit for ESPN and why they're back in.
They have a framework agreement with MLB that would give
(44:50):
ESPN exclusive rights to wait for it, sell all out
of market regular season games digitally and in market games
for five clubs over the next three years. So so
the way this would work is, and the deal is
(45:12):
not yet signed and the full completion not expected until September.
The exact amount of ESPN will pay is not known,
but it is substantial. They say, so yeah, So it's
the expected agreement arrives after ESPN did, as we were
(45:33):
pointing out, opt out of the final three years of
their deal with MLB, where they were paying an average
of five hundred and fifty million a year for Sunday
Night Baseball, eight to twelve first round playoff games in
the home run Derby, all of that was five hundred
and fift They said, we're not get our money's worth
for that, even with good ratings on Sunday nights.
Speaker 1 (45:50):
That's why they said we're out in MLB's who blahlahlah,
let's talk streaming. So they did, and.
Speaker 2 (46:02):
So he you know, Rob Manfred back in February said
ESPN was a shrinking platform as part of an explanation
of the owners, but Manfred and ESPN chairman Jimmy Patarro
have moved past their differences and with cable diminishing, ESPN
debuted its direct to consumer product today that cost twenty
(46:24):
nine ninety nine a month, does not require cable, satellite,
or YouTube type TV subscriptions thirty bucks a month to
get it. The added features of the new app are
available to most, but not all, customers who subscribe. Traditionally,
Netflix has emerged as a heavy favorite to land the
home run derby Netflix, NBC, and Apple are considered the
(46:47):
top landing spots for Sunday Night Baseball and first round
playoff games. So it's gonna be real interesting if Apple
winds up with that in terms of first round playf
and I see.
Speaker 3 (46:57):
Yeah, no, you know, kidding Craig, because you know, Apple TV,
which is who the MLS signed their contract with, has
not worked out.
Speaker 1 (47:08):
Viewership has not been. There a lot of issues with
the streaming.
Speaker 3 (47:12):
So I think a lot of a lot of organizations
have been weird because I think Apple was willing to
pay a lot of money to the NFL, and the
NFL just looked at the MLS all those issues and thought, no,
you know, we're gonna stay with what we have here
with our partners and stuff. So really interesting to see,
if you know, if Apple decides, hey, we're willing to
pay this amount of money and they'll probably outspend maybe
(47:33):
ESPN or TNT, will the MLB take a chance on
Apple TV and take this agreement.
Speaker 2 (47:41):
I don't know, especially we're postseason goes on now we
say all that, and Prime Video has had an NFL
playoff game, so Peacock at Peacock, it's you know, it's
headed headed in that direction. So anyway that, I just think,
I think it's going to be interesting to see if
it works out. I will tell you this, uh, And
(48:03):
I've started to have these conversations with my wife. If
all of this continues to travel down the path, it's
going to make me reevaluate my own thing.
Speaker 1 (48:13):
I've kind of held out.
Speaker 2 (48:13):
Along and stayed with Direct TV mainly just because of
convenience and I can get all the other packages I
need off that other than NFL Sundy ticket, and I've
been comfortable moving away from all of that. But now, yeah,
I'm starting to reevaluate what am I paying for them,
what can I get.
Speaker 1 (48:28):
For a lot less? You know? Anyway, I know a
lot of people get through that same thing.
Speaker 2 (48:32):
All right, let's let's get back to the Cowboys and
hear more from the Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer.
Speaker 13 (48:44):
Tommy urstofsh Cowboys not com you said before he left
Fox start and throwing into those last four practices that
you would wanted you guys focused, And with today being
the last actual last training camp practice, you feel like
they're still pre elected in.
Speaker 7 (48:57):
Even though they know that the end is kind of mirror.
Speaker 6 (49:01):
Gosh, I hope so, Tommy, I mean, I think, you know,
go out there and perform in front of you know,
a couple thousand fans and you know, their families. I
think they if they can't get excited for that, then
we need to be looking into our selection process of
the type of competitors they are. Again, there's a long
way between now and final cuts. There's a lot of
discussions that are going to be had, and to me,
(49:23):
you get distracted if you focus on other things other
than just playing football. So sorry the athletic Brian.
Speaker 11 (49:33):
Back in your Seattle days, you talked about the rule
of fifty three I'm curious what the rush attempts at
pass completions.
Speaker 7 (49:40):
Do you still refer.
Speaker 13 (49:41):
To that philosophy or how has it evolved over time,
because it.
Speaker 7 (49:44):
Adds it all.
Speaker 6 (49:45):
Yeah, for those that don't know what it means, basically,
it's just an arbitrary number that kind of over time.
The number you're trying to get is the number of
rushing attempts and completions to add up to We've moved it.
Sometimes it was fifty three, sometimes it was fifty five.
Speaker 1 (50:00):
Just think that again.
Speaker 6 (50:01):
Sometimes you're gonna go into a game and you're gonna
have to throw it more than you wanted to because
the run defense is either really good or they're committed
to taking away the run.
Speaker 1 (50:09):
But usually when you come out of a game.
Speaker 6 (50:10):
And you've hit that suite number somewhere in that fifty
five range, I'll say it usually means that you're having
a balanced attack and you're you're moving the football, you're
scoring points, you're probably owning the time of possession, and
when you come under that it usually is not good.
It's one of the top determining factors of winning and
losing offensively after turnovers. So yeah, I do I think
(50:34):
you know, anytime you're a play caller or you're a quarterback,
you need to understand that the power of a completion,
because when you throw a completion, there's not any guarantee
that the guys are gonna get the guy on the ground.
You know, we've all seen CD do amazing CD things
when he's caught little slant routes and things like that.
But if you throw an incompletion, then you're pretty sure
that you're not gonna have any positive yards.
Speaker 12 (50:55):
Does that number change week to week for you or
over course?
Speaker 1 (50:58):
Not really.
Speaker 6 (50:58):
I mean we you know, we kind of keep it
the same for whatever the year is how we're looking
at it. I know with Sanchez the number was a
little bit higher, and again as Mark got older, you know,
we bounced it out a little bit more, you know,
I mean later in his rookie season, we even you know,
going into the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (51:16):
You know, we were a ground and pound Rex's term.
Speaker 6 (51:18):
We were a ground and bound team early on, and
then in the playoffs he played great and he he
learned you know that if I throw completions, I get
to stay out here and it's kind of fun being
out here, and I like having playing quarterback when we
play like this, so not really the number.
Speaker 1 (51:32):
Usually it's usually it's over time.
Speaker 6 (51:34):
It's a pretty historical number, and I'm sure we're not
the only team that does it.
Speaker 12 (51:38):
John Jona WFA Bryan on Monday Night Trade and said
the produccast that the Cowboys, well that Michael Parsons has
leverage in this dispute because the Cowboys can't do it
with that. I won't ask you to with three or
disagree with that, but to what degree does that statement
(51:58):
have some truth?
Speaker 1 (52:00):
Well, to me, this is a team game, you know.
Speaker 6 (52:02):
I mean, like, I'm not gonna sit here and say
that any player is more important than any other player.
I just started out the press conference. Stand it, It's
going to take all fifty three guys. And that's why
Tyler Smith spending time with Tyler Booker. And again, everybody
has their thoughts and opinions and on the Mica situation.
But you know, to me, you know what's gonna make
(52:22):
us special and what's going to allow us to win
a super Bowl would be when we're all performing and
we all get that it takes fifty three plus in
this league because you have elevations and things that you
can do on game day with your practice squad guys
and stuff like that. But again, I think that the
ultimate team game. That's the way I've always looked at it.
And I don't see this situation a different.
Speaker 12 (52:45):
By having an answer questions about my job.
Speaker 6 (52:47):
But the past five six months and it's been ongoing.
Still No, honestly, I mean, I know you guys have
to ask the questions, and I respect that and understand that.
I think my tone hasn't changed, my answer had hasn't
really changed. I'm focused on the field, I'm focused on
the guys that are working and the business side of
it's going to take care of itself. And but no,
(53:08):
I mean I could answer those questions all day long.
Speaker 12 (53:11):
It doesn't make it harder to scheme a game plan
those a head coach without one of your top players.
Speaker 6 (53:16):
No, because I think at the end of the day,
we feel like Mike is going to be out there
when we can line up against Philadelphia here in fifteen
days or whatever it is. And you know, so, no answers.
I feel good about that.
Speaker 8 (53:26):
Yeah, without a contract.
Speaker 6 (53:29):
Extension, I feel good that Mike is going to be
out there against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Speaker 14 (53:34):
You're Garrett, what else you be a sports brian first
year in the coaches chairs and now you've got game management.
What are your thoughts on the new overtime rules and
that kind of like the postseason, both teams are going
to get a possessing no matter what.
Speaker 6 (53:48):
Yeah, I think it's going to be different. You know,
I think it's balanced the playing field. It makes it
where you actually have a decision. I think you have
to be mindful of Number one. You'll go in with
a plan. We'll go in with a plan of what
our plan would be if it goes into for time,
whether you know, if you win the toss, what do
you want to do?
Speaker 1 (54:02):
Take the ball or defer?
Speaker 6 (54:05):
And I think it's going to be something that you're
also watching during the course of the game. You know,
how's your defense playing, how you doing offensively? I do
think you know, I'm big into believing about momentum and
things like that. So let's just say, Garrett, we go
down the field and we score a touchdown to tie
the game. If you win the coin toss, maybe you
do take the ball, but there's an advantage when you
(54:27):
get to have the last look and you're now in
four down territory and things like that. So it will
be a weekly thing based on the opponent, where we're playing,
what the what the conditions are, all that.
Speaker 1 (54:38):
But it's definitely good for football.
Speaker 6 (54:42):
Having as with the else sort of news, I was
asked about Andrew and how he's looking and how he's.
Speaker 7 (54:49):
Progressed over those series.
Speaker 6 (54:50):
Yeah, I had a great game last game, played really
really well. I think when you watch him early on
in the game he was he was playing given pretty
good cushion and then he was kind of getting his
field for things. But the interception was incredible. He's a
guy that was playing great in the beginning of training camp.
He got nicked up a little bit and missed some
time and so I think it took him a couple
(55:12):
of days to get back. But I think you saw
the guy that we think we're getting, and that's a
very very talented, you know, second round pick that you know,
getting a chance to come here. He's done everything we've
asked him to do and working with David Overstreet Andre
Curtis has been great for him.
Speaker 1 (55:28):
All right.
Speaker 2 (55:29):
So there it is more from Ryan Choannenheimer, and there
you heard him say it. He's expecting Michael Parsons to
be there for the season opener. He's expecting, he said,
he expects to see him all on the field when
they play the Eagles on that Now, is he being
the company man echoing a company line, of course, but
he might also believe it as well. Also, here's something
(55:51):
else that it would probably at least give you a
little bit of pause anyway, It will make you think
that maybe he's just expector or maybe he even knows
from having had conversations with Jerry.
Speaker 1 (56:02):
I doubt that part of it, but you never know that.
Speaker 2 (56:07):
Uh, maybe it's going to be a situation where he's
fully expecting it to go right up to the start
of the regular seasons, just like he did with Dak,
Just like he's like he did with Ceedee Lamb, same
type deal that he's going to walk it right up
to the deadline, take a financial hit when he could
have got it done or earlier, and then and then
(56:27):
go ahead and sign the track.
Speaker 1 (56:29):
I think you're right, Craig. I think he knows that.
Speaker 3 (56:32):
And it's funny, you know, all this Terry McLaurin talk
with the trade of requests, I feel like we've actually
heard a lot more from from that side of it
versus the Cowboys Micah Parsons. As of late, I feel
like it's almost gotten quieter since the trade request, especially
from Micah Parson's side, which tells me that it was
(56:55):
just a negotiation tactic that Micah wants to stay in Dallas,
because if not, I feel like Craig we would have
his agent, his PR team would be putting on a
lot more information, a lot more so about about the
trade for demand and the trade request. But since then
it's kind of been crickets, which tells me I think
it's all negotiation tactic from Mikasai, which I understand why,
(57:16):
and even kind of Jerry on the Cowboys side have
been very quiet about it, but I agree. We're what
three weeks, two weeks away from from two weeks from tonight.
I think they opened the weeks from to night in Philly.
Micah Parsons will have a new contract by September third.
I think Jerry and his team are going to strategize
(57:40):
because it is it a Thursday night game or something
Thursday night, Jerry's gonna want to make it a big deal.
I think it's it's gonna come the day or the
day of the Thursday night game is it's gonna be ridiculous,
but it's going to dominate first take all day.
Speaker 1 (57:54):
And that's exactly what Jerry wants, no doubt about it.
Speaker 2 (57:57):
All Right, we're gonna shift back to college football with
some more notes on continue on thirteen under the Zone.
Speaker 1 (58:04):
We're back.
Speaker 4 (58:05):
It's the craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
in voice of the Texas Longhearts. Craig Way.
Speaker 2 (58:20):
Updated the baseball scoreboard. Rangers still troil the Royals five
to four. Rangers trying to get out of a tough
spot in the bottom of the seven of the Royals
at the basis loaded, made a pitching change, had a
collision on a fly ball in left, but the catch
was made. So there's Langford almost just went right underneath
(58:41):
Corey Seeker, but he made the catch. So now trying
to get out of it with Columba pitching for the
Rangers and trying to get out of the inning. There
it's in the bottom half of the seventh inning. The
Brewers who dropped a doublehead. They have the best record
baseball and they dropped a doubleheader yesterday to the Cubs
(59:05):
at Wrigley Field. After winning the opener of that four
game series on Monday, and then they got rained out
that they had the doubleheader the Cubs that the Brewers
lead for one that's in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Uh and in Denver the Dodgers are up eight to two,
bottom of the fifth at Colorado.
Speaker 1 (59:25):
Okay. I enjoy reading.
Speaker 2 (59:30):
Both on ESPN's website and on The Athletic and a
couple of other ones as well, the takes of those
who cover college football very very closely.
Speaker 1 (59:41):
One of those, and he's been doing it for years
and years.
Speaker 2 (59:43):
I guess he was a sports illustrator, while Stuart Mandel
he's with the Athletic now. Now I don't often agree
with him. I think he's kind of out there and
maybe that take is it about it, what it strikes
you about him?
Speaker 3 (59:58):
So this piece, it might be the piece that came
out last week, and it was a mailbag style and
it was like, out of the top ten teams, who
could you see? I don't know, it was like having
a losing record, but it was basically, which of the
TEP top ten teams do you think most is actually
going to suck this year? And his pick was Texas
and so obviously Texas was one of the final four
(01:00:20):
teams and so, but his reasoning, I mean, I thought
Florida State at the time was such an obvious choice
for that answer, and they ended up winning what one
game last year.
Speaker 1 (01:00:29):
So I don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:00:30):
I have not gotten over that take from Stu Mandel.
I'm sure he's a great guy. I think he's great
when it comes to terms of what's happening in college
football and il in the college for a playoff, But
in terms of the actual football takes, I think he
leaves something to be desired.
Speaker 2 (01:00:43):
Well, he's I will agree with you on one thing.
I don't College football writers aren't really supposed to be
fans of any specific program anyway, and shouldn't be, and
real fans of college football should understand that. I would
say he looks more disfavorable lea upon Texas than he
does some other programs as a writer.
Speaker 1 (01:01:03):
Yeah, okay. I handful of guys like.
Speaker 2 (01:01:06):
That, Yes, yeah, yeah, And that's okay. It's what the
is the perspective they come from, and that's okay. His
mail bag this week largely dealt with Michigan and the
NCAA thing because he and I thought he was very
straightforward about this. For example, somebody said, the question was,
(01:01:27):
with Michigan's light tap on the wrisk penalty, why don't
more major programs just cheat? And theare the NCAA to
do anything about it? This is an example of someone
who and there are many many fans programs all across
the college football landscape who are like this, who feel
(01:01:47):
that there's an inexhaustible amount of money within a college.
Speaker 1 (01:01:51):
Football program and that's not the case.
Speaker 2 (01:01:54):
And his answer was, call me crazy, but I don't
consider a thirty million dollar plus fine to be a
tap on the wrist. In fact, if you gave Michigan
ad ward manual truth serum, he'd probably tell you he'd
rather be banned from the Citrus Bowl this year than
add that considerable expense to an athletic department already projecting
a fifteen million dollar deficit in the first year of
(01:02:15):
revenue sharing. That's and he's right, he said, he said,
but I get it. If you're someone who wanted blood
over the Sigin stealing scandal, you've been conditioned for decades
to expect postseason bands and vacated wins when a school
gets in trouble. Personally, I'm glad the membership has finally
realized that the people most affected by postseason bands are
(01:02:37):
athletes who weren't even on the team at that time.
It had nothing to do with the infractions some of
the players on the twenty ten and twenty eleven USC
teams who got banned over Reggie Bush's extra benefits. We're
in junior high when Bush played there, which is why
USC fans and Ohio State fans and Miami fans and
any other fan base that suffered through a postseason band
maybe furious that Michigan didn't get one. However, even though
(01:03:00):
I think an eight figure fine is plenty punitive, it's
not exactly a deterrent that money is not coming out
of Jim Harball's, Sharon Moore's, or Connor Stallion's pockets. And
generally speaking, it's not programs that cheat, it's individuals.
Speaker 1 (01:03:16):
He said.
Speaker 2 (01:03:17):
I wonder how differently this would all feel if Harball
wasn't already long gone to the NFL. The guy is
effectively banned from college coaching for fourteen years. That's unheard of,
But in this case it doesn't matter because the guy
wasn't coming back to coach college regardless. But if this
were a college only guy Dabosweeney, Kalen de Bor, Josh Iipel,
or someone still early in their career Dan Lanning, Marcus Freeman,
(01:03:38):
Kenny Dillingham, it would be devastating for them. As for
Stallions himself, if you read that report, he's the clumsiest
saboteur since the home alone Burglars. I can't say his
eight year show cause will be a deterrent to fellow
gas and analysms as much as it will be comical
reading material around their offices.
Speaker 1 (01:03:56):
Yeah, it was kind of stupid, they said.
Speaker 2 (01:03:58):
So Anyway, there was a lot of Michigan oriented questions,
but here's another one that was I thought it was
pretty good. Several prominent coaches have the can't win the
Big Game level label, like James Franklin at Penn State. However,
it would seem that if you keep getting closed consistently,
you eventually break through, like Ryan Day did last year.
(01:04:19):
Tom Osborne couldn't win the Big Game until he did.
Now we only remember the dominance and the titles. Are
there any coaches who have consistently had winning top ten
programs yet never broken through that's the question. And by
the way, mac Brown was in that category until they won.
And I completely agree with Stewart Mandela's first guy that
comes to mind and covering the sport in my time
(01:04:40):
Mark Rick at Georgia for most of his fifteen seasons
from twenty one through fifteen, you could count on the
Dogs to feel the top ten team and compete for
SEC titles. However, they never climbed that last rung to
the national title game and suffered some pretty bad luck
along the way. The twenty two team went thirteen and one.
So happened Miami in Ohio State were undefeated in two
(01:05:03):
thousand and seven. They were number four heading into championship Saturday.
Number one and number two both lost, but they got
passed by LSU when the Tigers won the SEC title game,
and in the twenty twelve SEC Championship game, they were
four yards and six seconds short against Alabama from advancing
to the BCS title game and playing overmatch to Notre Dame.
Most of all, his bad luck was that only two
(01:05:24):
teams reached the so called playoff back then. He said,
you can trast that with a successor. Kirby Smart, who
began his tenure where they can't win the big one run,
specifically with Nick sated in Alabama. There was a second
and twenty sixth in the twenty seventeen national title game,
the infamous Justin Fields fake punt in the next year's
SEC title game, a blowout loss in twenty twenty, and
(01:05:44):
the inexplicable twenty twenty one.
Speaker 1 (01:05:46):
SEC title game meltdown.
Speaker 2 (01:05:48):
Then the Dogs won the rematch, and all anyone mentions
about smart now is the back to back championships and
lots and lots of player arrests. He said, I do
believe the getting close consistent theory is correct. James Franklin
is a particularly extreme case, though, is his big game
record is truly atrocious. One in fifteen against top five teams,
(01:06:11):
and even with five top ten finishes and eleven seasons
after reaching the CFP semifinals last year, it doesn't feel
like he's.
Speaker 1 (01:06:18):
Come close to the top yet. The nitty Lyons have
been consistent but not dominant.
Speaker 2 (01:06:22):
However, in most of all of those top ten losses,
he did not have the better team, simple as that
this year he may well have the best team in
the country. So there's some thoughts there from Stuart Mandel
on some stuff, an interesting takes. He's got some other
things that he gets to as well. We'll be back
to wrap up hour number two. I'm thirteen under the zone.
Cameron has been keeping tabs on the Tour Championship. What's
(01:06:46):
going on right now? Is it still well? You said
Justin Thomas gave some shots.
Speaker 3 (01:06:52):
Back to par Yeah, he was your solo leader at
seven under and then had a little bit of trouble
on the sixteenth. All the par four ended up making bogie.
So went from a one shot leader to behind by one.
But Russell Henley, the former Georgia Bulldog, and we'll be
on the US Ryder Cup team has berdie the sixteenth
(01:07:12):
and the seventeenth to take a two shot lead to
the final hole in this opening day is too clear
of j T, which is Bertie. The eighteenth hole the
par five, so JT in with the sixty four alongside
Colin Morricawa and Patrick Cantley. But those three guys behind
Russell Henley by two shots, and the eighteenth is a
par five, so Henley could at least have a three
(01:07:34):
shot lead for the moment. Meanwhile, Scotty Scheffler lurking at
four under par leave Roy McElroy at three hundred part
So yeah, I think Scotty will get least one more
one more birdie here. But he's lurking. We don't have
a good, good nickname for Scotty Scheffler. You know, I
don't know the lurker A lurker.
Speaker 1 (01:07:54):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:07:54):
I don't think you would like that. You would not
like people like that. He would like that at all.
He has in the lurking. But yes, you're right. A
couple other notes are pretty interesting. I don't know if
you saw this. You and I got to see it
firsthand in the NCAA Women's Sweet sixteen when Texas played Tennessee.
(01:08:16):
They beat the Lady Balls in that Sweet sixteen game,
and that got Texas to the Elite eight, where they
knocked off TCU to get back to the Final four.
Ruby Whitehorn is someone who has been very much contributor,
(01:08:37):
fourth on the team in scoring at twelve points per game.
She started twenty eight to thirty four games last season
four rebounds. Began her career at Clemson, where she started
sixty two of sixty six games, so she helped Tennessee
go twenty four and ten and coach Kim Colwell's debut season.
But she has been suspended indefinitely following an unrest on
felony charges of domestic assault and agriv burglary. Now, her attorney,
(01:09:04):
Gregory p Isaacs, said she will plead not guilty at
their preliminary hearing on September fifth. An Athletic department spokesman
said she suspended in definitely not participating in team activities.
She's at six' eighth post and she was arrested after
The Knox County Sheriff's office responded to a call back
(01:09:25):
On august eighth at four fifteen in the. Afternoon, now
according to, reports police said The whitehorn got into an
altercation outside a woman's residence and kicked in a front
door and a bedroom, door and this had to do
with apparently a dispute on the fact Where whitehorn said
(01:09:46):
she was trying to get a property, back said the
woman that was in the apartment took her phone and
her passport and then locked the, door so she kicked
the door open and then went after to do. That
her attorneys at Our firm's investigation has also revealed that
the factual allegations contained in the warrants are not accurate
(01:10:09):
and are contradicted by eye witness. Accounts Ruby whitehorn looks
forward to having this matter resolved in the very near.
Future so that's an interesting. Case but we'll, see we'll
see how it comes. Out And i'm one of those
people who by the, way so she was, arrested she's
been suspended if this turns out to not be the
(01:10:32):
case and she's cleared of, charges but you will hear
me say, that it's you, Know i'm sensitive to the
deal where people report on someone's arrest and then if
the arrest that the charges are dropped or not filed or,
whatever then it gets swept under the. Rug every person
deserves their day in, court every person deserves their chance
(01:10:55):
to speak for. Themselves just as it's you, know nothing
wrong with recording the news of the, day and this
was a news.
Speaker 1 (01:11:02):
Report but if.
Speaker 2 (01:11:05):
She's, exonerated as her attorney says she will, be then
we'll mention that as. Well, OKAY i wanted to get
to another, story AND i mentioned this going in toward
the top of the. Hour there's been there are always
a lot of debates in college football size of the
(01:11:27):
college football playoff conference realignment in il transfer portal, coach
moving the, house, settlement all of those things IN sec.
Country in THE, sec no, subject seemingly with regard to
(01:11:51):
the football to, football no subject seems to draw more
attention than whether the SE sec should play an eight
game conference schedule or nine game conference. Schedule, texas of,
course was playing a nine game schedule over the past
few years in The big, twelve but when they moved
into THE, sec they had to add a non conference
came to get it to, eight so they would just
(01:12:13):
have an eight game conference. Schedule if you had asked
me AT sec media days when we were there In,
Atlanta cameron or some murder, it what did what was
my feeling on whether THE sec would go to a
nine game conference schedule or stay with. EIGHT i would
(01:12:35):
have said, overwhelmingly overwhelmingly.
Speaker 1 (01:12:39):
THAT i expected him to stay.
Speaker 2 (01:12:40):
Eight it just seemed to be the sentiment because that's
pretty much what coaches. Wanted that you know that THE
sec schedule itself was grueling to the point where they
needed to stay they did not go to, nine and
the criticism of that that was, Okay, well then so
(01:13:01):
many of you play cupcakes cupcake, weekend a lot OF fcs,
opponents and and and so there was there was always
that debate.
Speaker 1 (01:13:14):
One, debate AND i thought this was a pretty healthy.
Speaker 2 (01:13:16):
Debate texas fans are quick to point, out and rightly,
so The texas has not played AN fcs opponent since
two thousand and. Six it Was Sam, houston and that
was only Because minnesota dropped off the, schedule and that
was the year the schedules went to twelve games off.
Eleven so Mac brown had to scramble and they Got Sam,
houston and they came in And texas you, know drove
(01:13:39):
them into the turf and then went on about its. Business,
this by the, way will be the first Time Sam
houston's come back To austin since then this year when
they Come and so so there's this this debate about
all of, this and the uh part of the debate
was if you're PLAYING fcs, opponents it's a lesser brand of,
(01:14:04):
football it's a.
Speaker 1 (01:14:05):
Cupcake you shouldn't be doing.
Speaker 2 (01:14:06):
That our Friend Billy lucci with Tex aggs comes back,
with don't try to pull that passed on, me because
the teams That texas, plays while NOT, fcs are hardly
better than them any point to a utap or something like. That,
now my counter to that is to, say if there
(01:14:30):
is a difference when you're talking about a difference in twenty,
scholarships because it's eighty five FOR, fbs it's sixty five FOR.
Fcs you don't get eighty five. Scholarships so there is
a difference in the quality and the depth on. That
but people going to have that discussion in that. Debate
it doesn't matter. Really teams that are going to PLAY
(01:14:52):
fcs opponents are going to PLAY fcs.
Speaker 1 (01:14:53):
Opponents it's just going to.
Speaker 2 (01:14:55):
Happen and whether THE sec goes to eight games or nine,
Games let's say they go to.
Speaker 1 (01:15:02):
Nine if they.
Speaker 2 (01:15:02):
Go to, nine one of those three non conference opponents
is going to be AN fcs.
Speaker 1 (01:15:07):
Opponent it just is for THE. Sec that's how it
happens a lot in The big twelve as.
Speaker 2 (01:15:10):
Well texas might not do, that but other PROGRAMS i
think would continue to do that. Well report today on
the athletic From Seth emerson is that following the conference
the meeting of The Conferences Athletic directors this week In,
birmingham THE sec is moving closer to adopting the nine
(01:15:32):
game conference. Schedule, now the conference's presidents have to give final.
Approval but if we're being real, here almost all of
the time the presidents are going to follow the lead
of the athletic directors and that sort of, Stuff and
nothing happens in a vacuum At texas, anyway you, know
(01:15:53):
the chairman of The boarders Of, Regents Kevin, eltivee and
the university president AND sar AND, cdc they're, all you,
know pretty much in concert with a lot of the
decisions it would have to go with. Football while the
conference presidents would still need to give final, approval it
is the closest the conference has been to moving forward
(01:16:17):
with a nine game, schedule a decision it has been
debating for. Years the nine game schedule would go into
effect next year twenty twenty. Six of, course THE sec
currently plays eight conference. Games Big, Ten big twelve plays.
NINE acc also plays, eight and that's part of what this,
larger broader debate has been with regard to size of
(01:16:40):
the college football. Playoff by the, way when you were In,
mexico did you read the story about The Big ten
floating that twenty eight team playoff?
Speaker 1 (01:16:50):
Possibility? Oh, yeah, yeah it was a.
Speaker 2 (01:16:54):
Mess, look you know, Me i've been a mores more
guy for, years BUT i think sixteen would be the right,
number just like sixty eight is fine for THE nc basketball.
Term they don't need to go to seventy. Two they
don't need to go to seventy, six you know that
sort of. Thing they they don't need to go to.
That i'm fine with the first four of the play
(01:17:15):
ins stuff like. That you want to make it sixty
eight sixty, eight, fine you can do it that, way
but it doesn't need to expand beyond. That AND i
don't think they college football needs to have more than
sixteen in a college football. Playoff The Big ten was
out there touting the possibility of twenty eighteen.
Speaker 1 (01:17:31):
Plays. Crazy i'll dig it back up and look at
it a little.
Speaker 2 (01:17:34):
Bit but, anyway here's the other. KEY espn has indicated
a willingness to increase its payment to THE sec if
the conference has a ninth league. Game so, anyway so
that's why it's all circled around the college football playoff
and all that other kind of. Stuff so it'd be
(01:17:55):
interesting to see if it goes to nine. Games put
it this, way if it goes to nine. Games you
would not hear any more carping from fans by you,
Know TEXAS a AND m has never Been, athens or
in the first ten years they haven't been at they
haven't played them in all all this kind of. Stuff
there would be more spreading of matchups because if they
(01:18:20):
play nine games in conference play nine game conference, schedule
then it would be easier to draw up three permanent
opponents and six rotating.
Speaker 1 (01:18:31):
Opponents the math would work out better as.
Speaker 2 (01:18:33):
Well i'm always a math guy about that kind of,
stuff even though math was not my strong suit high
school or in. College all, right coming, up we're gonna
hear more From Brian shotenneimber.
Speaker 1 (01:18:42):
When we continue on thirteen under The.
Speaker 4 (01:18:44):
Zone back to The Craig Way. Show connect With craig
through the text line by text Team zone to eight
one five three, zero followed by your. Message standard message
and data rates may.
Speaker 2 (01:18:57):
APPLY a couple other notes about, this the possibility of
a nine game conference. Schedule you, KNOW i mentioned that
part of the big debate between THE sec and The
Big ten was they differed on the formats of the
playoff because of the differences in the number of league.
(01:19:19):
Games and this news also comes after one day after
the College Football playoff anounced, yesterday they are going to
tweak the schedule strength formula that it gives members of
the selection. Committee greg sank THE Sec, commissioner and others
in THE sec have been pushing for the conference's schedule
(01:19:41):
strength to get more. Respect sankie put out an eight
page booklyn on the last day of the spring meetings In,
may where he argued that it showed there is a
rigor here that is. Unique so in this nine game,
SCHEDULES i pointed out EVERY sec team would have three
annual opponents and six new opponents each. Season And sankie
(01:20:04):
had said at media days that the three annual opponents
would not be. Permanent they would operate on a four year,
cycle allowing for look ins to revisit the three annual.
Rivalries in other, Words texas wouldn't Play, ARKANSAS, a AND
m In, oklahoma all three of those teams every. Year
they wouldn't do.
Speaker 3 (01:20:24):
It do you think there would be a special provision
For texas bill to play at LEAST a AND m In?
Speaker 1 (01:20:28):
Oklahoma it might be, that and then rotate the.
Speaker 2 (01:20:31):
Thurn AND i think those are things they would have
to work out to get to, that but it would
have to fall into the rhythm of what else they were.
Doing like Beaver, Lance jason, SAID i still like the
four pods of four teams for THE. Sec you play
the three teams in your pot annually plus two from
the other three, pods that would be nine conference.
Speaker 1 (01:20:48):
Games seems like the logical. Scheduling it does.
Speaker 2 (01:20:50):
For, texas but for a lot of other schools it
doesn't make sense to have three particular permanent. Opponents AND
i think they did move away from the pod idea
when they moved away from the division. Idea they just
wanted it all to be one. Lopsode that does not, mean,
however that they wouldn't still play nine conference, games or
(01:21:15):
that there wouldn't still be, three you, know six newbies
and then three opponents in a two year. Cycle AND
i think that's the important thing to keep in mind
if we're talking about cycles, here a two year cycle
of playing let's, say in the case Of, Texas, Arkansas,
Oklahoma TEXAS a AND, m and the next cycle would
Be Oklahoma TEXAS a AND m AND lsu and the next.
Speaker 1 (01:21:39):
ONE i.
Speaker 2 (01:21:42):
Like most, FOLKS i find it difficult to imagine a
scenario where they would not Play oklahoma every. YEAR i,
mean and they just got through living without Playing, TEXAS
a AND m for thirteen, Years so do they want
to go back to something like that? Again kind of,
Doubted but that's there's gonna have to be some elasticity
(01:22:06):
with a with a schedule that rotates conference regular opponents
and new. Opponents if everybody else is gonna be, listen
they can say the same thing About. Auburn Is auburn canna, Say,
okay we've got to Play george every. Year it's the
oldest rivalry in THE. Sec we've got to Play, alabama
got to play The Iron bowl every? Year and so
(01:22:27):
are they going to Play? Florida they're gonna PAY. Lsu
you know what what's gonna happen with? That IS lsu
going to Play, Alabama, auburn AND a AND m Or.
Speaker 1 (01:22:39):
Arkansas you.
Speaker 2 (01:22:41):
Know so there's there's a lot and we've been talking
about this for months and months and months and months
and how this would all shake, down but IT'S i
would say, this it's easier to make happen that you
wind up playing a greater amount of those schools if
you're playing a nine game. Schedule it just might not
be every single year that you might not play some
of the other or for one of a better term
(01:23:01):
outliers on your. Schedule all, right let's let's hear more
a little bit more now from The cowboys head Coach
Brian chottmatter Got skyderix.
Speaker 3 (01:23:10):
With pap what's your philosophy through the.
Speaker 12 (01:23:13):
Year has been on PLAYING qb one in the preseason
and how about philosophy sort of in fact what you
decided to do this.
Speaker 1 (01:23:19):
Year for a fear of that.
Speaker 6 (01:23:20):
Too, YEAH i think it's very. DIFFERENT i think you,
know each each situation is. DIFFERENT i think you, know
WHEN i look back in my early, career when you,
know we had A Sam bradford or we had a you,
Know Drew, brees guys like, that a lot of times
those guys were battling for. POSITIONS i Remember breeze was
going up Against, fluty so they had to. Play Sam
bradford was a guy that we wanted to play a
(01:23:41):
little bit just because we wanted to get them a
little bit of. EXPERIENCE i think it's based on who
the quarterback, is and So i've made it very. CLEAR
i think you, Know Dak prescott knows how to play.
Quarterback and he gets great reps every day against our,
defense going back To OTA's and going into training camp
and scrimmaging against The, rams and that's why more and
more teams are doing. That AND i think at the
(01:24:02):
end of the, day the philosophy is is That dak
knows how to play. Quarterback the most important thing for
us is the timing and the rhythm and things that
we're trying to do with our passing, game which you
can get that done in practice without. Playing and the
bigger Thing i'd say is when you play your, quarterback
it affects. Everybody like if you play your, quarterback you're
playing everybody because you're going to play your left, tackle
(01:24:22):
you're gonna play your left, guard you're gonna play your starting.
Speaker 1 (01:24:24):
Receivers so it impacts a lot of.
Speaker 6 (01:24:27):
People and AGAIN i share to you guys the story
About LaDainian thomlinson a couple weeks. Ago you, know like
he was gonna, play but he was going to run
a swinger oute towards the boundary and he was just
going to keep on. Going so to, me that's one
way to do it that my dad. Did but we
look at a little.
Speaker 7 (01:24:43):
Different one more question on the micro.
Speaker 8 (01:24:49):
Situation since you feel good about him playing when you
need him on the practice, field is there like a
deadline when he needs to be back practicing with the
team to. Matter that's that feeling good about?
Speaker 6 (01:25:01):
Playing, yeah, Again mike is another. Guy, again he takes
great care of his. Body, again you'd like it sooner
rather than, Later But mike is going to be.
Speaker 1 (01:25:08):
Prepared.
Speaker 6 (01:25:08):
AGAIN i go back to the thing with you, know
each situation is, different And mike knows his body as
well as. Anybody and the best thing of him being,
here which you certainly, Know, clarence is that he has
been able to do some of the. Walkthroughs he has
been able to be in the. Meetings he's he understands
some of the calls and the different packages and stuff
that we're going to, use and.
Speaker 1 (01:25:28):
That's a huge.
Speaker 6 (01:25:28):
Advantage and then obviously the physical side of. It usually
the players are the experts with where their bodies.
Speaker 8 (01:25:34):
Are he's not doing the football, things run up and
down the field with his. Teammates that lends himself to
soft tissue injuries when you haven't done, that and so
you confident comfortable to he's doing enough outside of.
Speaker 7 (01:25:49):
Practice that that's not gonna be an.
Speaker 1 (01:25:50):
Issue.
Speaker 6 (01:25:51):
YEAH i mean the end of the, day you got
to do change, Direction you have to do. Things it's
not just you, know getting on a. Treadmill we don't do.
That you, know there has to be change of direction
and things like. That but, uh, yeah certainly injuries are
a part of the. Game and AGAIN i have complete
faith and our strength, staff our trainers and all that
stuff that they're doing the things that they need to
do for him to go out and perform. Well and you,
(01:26:12):
Know mike is obviously a pretty good football, player so
one thing he has not lost the ability to do
is rush the passer and make.
Speaker 11 (01:26:17):
Plays how many different starting corner combinations would you say
you have.
Speaker 6 (01:26:23):
On the, Table, Pleaece, well, really we don't have that
many right now because we have to trim the. Roster
but LIKE i keep, saying you, KNOW i do think
that the evaluation process has been, Great, Nick but you,
KNOW i do think we have some help on the.
Speaker 1 (01:26:36):
Way and, again is that week. ONE i don't.
Speaker 6 (01:26:39):
Know i'm not going to put those timetables out there,
yet BUT i do feel, like you, know we've got
plenty there to do what we have to do to
win a football, game and that's all you're trying to.
Do your focus after you Play atlanta and you make
these final roster cuts is everything is all About philadelphia
and getting ready to play them and whoever we have out.
THERE i feel like we'll be able to put together
a hell of a defensive Plan flucent his staff to
(01:27:01):
slow down a really really good offense and the damn
good football team In.
Speaker 9 (01:27:04):
Philadelphia Does mike a situation impact how you put your
fifty three? Together in terms of, it you can feel
confident it's kind of, Play but do you need to
go heavy at pass rusher early?
Speaker 13 (01:27:15):
Year?
Speaker 6 (01:27:15):
YEAH i mean all those things will play into. THINGS i,
mean the health of the team plays a factor in.
That you, know you, know what are you doing at?
Quarterback all those different things that you, know there's so
many moving, parts as you guys. Know that's WHY i
really you, know once we Play atlanta and we get
through the, game then those those days become long because
you're not only evaluating your roster and the decisions you
(01:27:37):
want to, Make you're evaluating thirty one other teams and
their roster because there's going to be some, really really
good football players that are out there on the. Street
AND i think that's the message to the guys that
on our squad that don't make it is just because
you don't make it, here it doesn't mean you don't
have a bright future in this. League and SO i
think that you, know it becomes long hours and long
(01:27:59):
nights and long, discussions but, uh you love, it and
you love it because you have a chance to improve your.
Team you have a chance to if you make the right,
decisions set yourself up for. Success if you make the wrong,
decisions you put yourself behind the eight ball a little.
Bit SO i love this time of, year not for
the pain and the stress that it puts on some
of the, players but just for the competitive part of.
(01:28:22):
It so you mentioned momentum.
Speaker 2 (01:28:27):
Before how how do you address that concept with the
team in terms, of you, know when when things are
going for you.
Speaker 11 (01:28:32):
And you're writing, it how to keep that, going or
when it's.
Speaker 13 (01:28:35):
Going against, you how do you how do.
Speaker 7 (01:28:37):
You try to snap out of it and get it.
Speaker 1 (01:28:39):
Going the other.
Speaker 6 (01:28:40):
Way, WELL i think you need to understand that it
is an important part of the game to capitalize a.
Speaker 1 (01:28:44):
Momentum we didn't do a very good job of.
Speaker 6 (01:28:45):
It last game Against, baltimore we had a couple of
sudden changes that the defense created and we didn't do
much with. Them SO i think we talk about it
all the, time the importance of taking. That we have
a operation that we do and the way we set
it up, is you, know the defense goes with flues
and on, offense the offense goes gets around L, dub
the quarterback comes with me and we just talk through
(01:29:06):
what the plan of attack.
Speaker 1 (01:29:07):
Is it's a.
Speaker 6 (01:29:08):
Mindset but there's also huge ebbs and flows in this.
Game and so whether you come out, greater you come
out slow at some point this. Game it's The National Football.
League it's going to balance. UP i, mean it's what
the league. Wants it wants close, games it wants you,
know these things coming down to the last couple of
minutes of the fourth, quarter and you, know so you
(01:29:29):
have to maintain the ability to stay, calm whether it's
good times bad. Times but there's definitely something THAT i
do believe that you can capture momentum and have big,
swings whether it's we call it doubling up, right you
take the two minute drive at the end of the first,
half you go, down you score a, touchdown and then
you come out in the second, half you get the,
ball you can come out go get another. TOUCHDOWN i,
mean those are huge swings that impact. Games special, teams block,
(01:29:52):
punts kick. Returns you, know obviously we're blessed to have
a guy Like. Turp you, know those are things that
you need To when you have those things definitely gives
you a boost of energy and.
Speaker 8 (01:30:02):
Momentum, CHERRY i said this a couple of weeks, ago
and now you have repeated it that you got some
guys coming.
Speaker 5 (01:30:08):
Back is Mister diggs somebody that is progressing where you
might see him In?
Speaker 6 (01:30:14):
September, YEAH i, think you, know, again he's one of
those guys that's doing a really good.
Speaker 1 (01:30:18):
Job BUT i hope and believe that it won't just Be.
Speaker 6 (01:30:22):
Trayvon but, Yeah trayvon is doing a great job and
hopefully he's one of those.
Speaker 1 (01:30:28):
Guys good, Good thank you.
Speaker 2 (01:30:31):
Guys all right there it is with with The cowboys
head Coach brian.
Speaker 1 (01:30:37):
Schottenhebber, okay we.
Speaker 2 (01:30:39):
Just got to all that stuff we were talking about
on THE sec and the possibility of going to anine
game conference.
Speaker 1 (01:30:46):
Schedule it's going to.
Speaker 2 (01:30:47):
Happen we'll give you the details coming up on thirteen
under The zone.
Speaker 1 (01:30:54):
And we're back to The Craigway.
Speaker 4 (01:30:55):
Show have a message For, Craig share it by using
the talk back feature on The IHEARTSRADIO.
Speaker 1 (01:31:01):
Wapp we were just.
Speaker 2 (01:31:07):
Skimming through what Seth emmerson's story was about the, possibility
and his lead was THE sec is moving closer to
adopting a nine game conference. Schedule they've gone beyond moving.
Closer it's. Happened in, fact it was announced by the
(01:31:27):
commissioner himself just a few minutes ago In. Atlanta and
here is the. Announcement it, says The Southeastern conference today
announced it will implement a nine game football schedule beginning
in twenty twenty, six reinforcing the SEC's position as the
nation's leader in competitive excellence of fan excitement, Anyway the,
(01:31:50):
decision approved by the SEC's presidents and chancellors following a
recommendation by the league's athletic, directors was announced By Commissioner Greg.
Sanki now this is the quote from the commissioner From,
sankie adding a NINTH sec game underscores our university's commitment
to delivering the most competitive football schedule in the. Nation
(01:32:11):
this format protects, rivalries increases competitive, balance and paired with
our requirement to play an additional power, opponent, INSURERS sec
teams are well prepared to compete and succeed in The
College Football. Playoff Now here here is the breakdown on
the format for. It first of, all THE sec will
(01:32:35):
continue with a single standings non divisional. Structure in other,
words the reference THAT i was making to our man
Bev Lance, jason there was no pods anything like, that
either through scheduling or through.
Speaker 1 (01:32:47):
Standings no.
Speaker 2 (01:32:48):
Pods but they will still go with just their single
standing non divisional, structure which obviously means the top two
teams would advance to THE sec championship.
Speaker 1 (01:32:57):
Game then it.
Speaker 2 (01:32:58):
Says each school will three annual opponents focused on maintaining
many traditional. Rivalries and say all said, many it did
say each team's remaining six games will rotate among the
(01:33:18):
remaining conference, schools and each team will face every OTHER
sec program at least once every two, years and every
opponent home and away in four. Years, now that last
part is important to keep in mind because what it
can mean is you could lock in when it's his
(01:33:40):
three annual, opponents you can lock in Say, OKLAHOMA a
AND m And arkansas For texas as they're three, annuals
while keeping the other six rotating home and. Home and
that was the key to this whole thing was mentioning
that they would play all of their remaining those six
games that rotate home and. Home so that let's, say for,
(01:34:04):
EXAMPLE Lsu texas didn't get to PLAY lsu in twenty,
twenty as we know because of the pandemic on that
would have been that return game In Baton. Rouge but
in this, case even IF lsu is not listed as
one of the quote unquote traditional, opponents then they could
still be on the rotating of the six where they
would play them at least once at home and once
(01:34:26):
in the road every four, years and they would face
every OTHER sec program at least once every two. YEARS
i love. It i'm all about. It everybody has that
equal balance on.
Speaker 1 (01:34:38):
That further, furthermore.
Speaker 2 (01:34:43):
This is from THE sec. RELEASE sec teams are required
to schedule at least one additional high quality non conference
opponent from The Atlantic, Coast Big ten Or big twelve
conferences Or Notre dame each. Season THE sec will continue
evaluate its policies to ensure the continued scheduling of high
(01:35:05):
quality non conference. Opponents so you, know they've been playing
eight conference games in nineteen ninety, two they played seven
from eighty eight to ninety, one and six from seventy
four to eighty. Seven prior to seventy, four there was
no uniform. Requirement so now it's locked. In it's going
to happen starting next. YEAR i think it's. GREAT i
think it's even it locks everybody, in because that's one
(01:35:29):
of been one of the other arguments for folks who,
SAY i don't know that it helps or not if
you're not going to wind up playing everybody and you're
not going to get a chance to play everybody at.
Home under this, formula you see every team in the
league at least every two, years and you get to
play a home game against every team in the league
(01:35:53):
within every four.
Speaker 1 (01:35:53):
Years SO i think it's a good.
Speaker 2 (01:35:56):
FORMAT i think it'll and, furthermore making sure they play
a power for. Opponent now folks can can howl about,
whatever cupcakes and fcs and all that kind of. Stuff
AND i did say this last segment before this became,
official if if they went to nine, games you'll probably
still see some of those.
Speaker 1 (01:36:15):
Teams play a.
Speaker 2 (01:36:16):
Cupcake but it's a lot easier to swallow a cupcake
when you got your vegetables going down.
Speaker 1 (01:36:22):
Too and that's, that and that that's what's going to happen.
Speaker 2 (01:36:26):
Here with this playing a ninth conference opponent and you're
required to play a power for.
Speaker 1 (01:36:32):
And most of THE sec SCHOOLS i think play A p.
Speaker 2 (01:36:35):
FOUR i think they all they all did last, year
AND i think they will and they have to.
Speaker 1 (01:36:39):
Now off of.
Speaker 2 (01:36:41):
That, texas by the, way has at least one power
for opponent on its non conference schedule the rest of this.
Decade they've got Obviously Ohio state this. Year Ohio state
comes back here next, Year michigan comes here the return
game from a year. Ago they come here the following.
Year THEN i think they've got a home and home
Of Arizona state and Also Notre, dame right And Notre.
(01:37:01):
Dame so so they're they're. Set, yeah they're. Set they're locked.
In the others will have to. Adjust would you Say
Mississippi state will have to dump a non Con.
Speaker 3 (01:37:10):
They're the only ONLY sec team with four non conference
schemes already scheduled for twenty twenty.
Speaker 2 (01:37:15):
Six, yeah somebody's gonna get dumped off that. List take
a close look at that fourth non conference. Opponent how
many of them do you think are power? FOR i
think one's gonna be power.
Speaker 1 (01:37:23):
For that's. It that's my. GUESS i go put it this.
Speaker 2 (01:37:26):
Way if the if that fourth one is not a power,
for that's the one that draws the black.
Speaker 3 (01:37:31):
Bean i'm just saying a short straw. One, Yep Tennessee.
Tech that's that's the. One none is that the fourth?
Speaker 1 (01:37:40):
Game?
Speaker 3 (01:37:40):
Yep It's Louisiana monroe Bat minnesota. Yep home For troy.
Yep and Then Tennessee. Tech see, You Golden, eagles that's
the ONLY. Fc, yes they'll be off of that even
though they're playing UH A p four In. Minnesota they've got.
That but, yeah that that's gonna have to replace the
(01:38:01):
to lock in the other conference upon.
Speaker 2 (01:38:03):
Him all, right up, next we'll be ready to wrap
it up with WHAT i, considered perhaps if THE sec
going to nine conference games is the most important news
of the, day What i'm about to tell you is
the second. Most when we wrap it up on, thirteen
under the zone
