Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to a Friday afternoon edition of the program here
on AM thirteen hundred. The zone by name is Craig Wait.
Glad to have you with us, and certainly also happy
to have the producer alongside. I say alongside. I happy
to be at UFCU Dish park Field to prepare to
call tonight's SEC Series opener between the Texas long Ones
(00:24):
and the Florida Gators. But nur iHeart Compound is the
one and only Cameron D.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Parker.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas as
in the team he was named for his favorite pro
football team that he refuses to acknowledge or except right now,
except maybe if they get good and make the playoffs,
then maybe he might watch them again.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
It could mean any number of other things. How you
doing today, Kim.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
I'm doing good, Craig. One last home series for Texas Baseball.
Hopefully they'll be back in what three weeks for the regions,
and they don't have games that come down to the
wire like Texas Softball did yesterday with a walk off.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
That was amazing. We'll hear Andrew Haynes's call on that
walk off.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
There.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
What a game where Texas seemingly had everything under control
until they gave up a five run fifth to tie it,
and Ole Miss had the go ahead run ninety feet
away and had the bases loaded before Texas could get
out of it with sidhale Alei Goudieras. And then Texas
got the walk on and that was set up by
an error that kept it inning alive to put runners
(01:32):
at first and second, and then Meskuy with a big
hits blast to center field and went off the wall
for a double into the ball game, and Texas got
the wins, and the log Worns are through to the
semifinal round of the SEC tournament, probably if they hadn't already,
probably locked down a top eight national seed with that victory,
(01:53):
and they'll play the number two seat Texas. A and
M who was in a fight for a while with
South Carolina but run ended up run.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Ruling the game. Cocks.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
That game is at five forty And how's the.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Best way they find that?
Speaker 4 (02:09):
Cam?
Speaker 5 (02:11):
What's that?
Speaker 1 (02:12):
How's the best way that long WRN fans will find
Andrew Haynes's call Today?
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Download the free iHeartRadio app and in search Retro Austin.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
That's it. I was trying to remember. I want to
make sure.
Speaker 1 (02:23):
Yeah, Retro Austin, That's what I wanted to I was
trying to remember there and then that's where you can
hear it. I think he's taking here, what at five
to twenty in the first pitch at five forty, I
believe our time this afternoon in the semifinals of the
SEC Tournament. The winner of that game will get the
winner of the Oklahoma Arkansas game, being tomorrow's SEC Softball
(02:43):
Tournament championship. Long Worn baseball team is trying to lock
down the number one seed by becoming the SEC regular
season champion. They've got work to do with the Florida
Gators coming in a Gators team that's been hot of late,
even though they're only eleven and thirteen in the conference.
They come off winning three in a row and they
have been on a roll of late, and so Texas
(03:07):
will play Florida and the Gators are even though they
did lose on Tuesday night non conference game the South Florida,
they won Fourida prior to that, including the last game
of the Arkansas series that was in Gainesville, and then
swept the series.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Out South Carolina.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
Speaking of South Carolina, by the way, they've been in
a free fall.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
They're not going to catch.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Maybe they got a slight chance mathematically to fall all
the way to last place, but Missouri has yet to
win a conference game, so they're owing twenty four in
the league. And South Carolina lost last night to Auburn
in their series opener twenty four to two and seven innings,
and they're playing a double header today because they're expecting
(03:54):
in clement weather down on the planes in southern Alabama
later certainly tomorrow on Sunday, So they're playing a doubleheader today.
And right now, Auburn's up seven to two, and that's
just in the thirty inning, so who knows, Maybe it
could be headed for another run rule I don't know,
But the long Wornes are trying to lock down the
(04:17):
SEC regular season title. Is it possible, mathematically possible that
they could win it this weekend? It is mathematically possible,
but unlikely. It would take something along the lines of
sweeping Florida and Arkansas losing two out of three LSU.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
I think that would be the easiest way for that
to happen.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
So it's not done yet, but they are still in
control of their own destiny. They are up to games
on Arkansas with six to play, so the opportunity is
there for Texas, but they will have to play well
down the stretch to do it.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
And UH.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
It begins tonight, and it begins with Ruger Riojas going
to the mouth and Ruger, in his shortest outing in
most runs given up this season when he took the
loss last Thursday night in Fayetteville, got an extra day arrest,
and so for this Friday night season open, he will
take an eight and two record in a four to
one nine earn run average and UH. For the Florida
(05:25):
Gators tonight, it'll be a left handed red shirt junior
in Pierce Cupola who will start for them. It's spelled
like Copelez and Francis Ford, but pronounced that you know,
the director pronounced Capola. And Capola is only making his
fifth start of the season. He's been used, you know, sparingly.
(05:47):
He had come back from injury. He's two and zero
with a one three two ERA and four starts, but
he's only worked a total thirteen and two thirds innings.
The Lee Bell cows for them. Liam Peterson, who had
been their Friday starter, who's going to start tomorrow and
Aiden King will start the game on Sunday. So those
are the games, those are the other pitchers for Florida.
(06:10):
So and it's also interesting the Longhorns have played Florida
four times in the past. All four meetings have come
in Omaha, all of them two thousand and five, of course. Well,
the most recent was twenty eighteen, first time that David
(06:30):
Pierce got the Longhorns to Omaha in his second season,
and they lost to the Gators in twenty eighteen that year,
and that was an elimination game, and then there was
an elimination game or a series opening game for them
(06:51):
in twenty eleven that they lost to Florida.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
The other two times.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
And both of those were what was then, I guess
it was I'll call td Ameritray Park at the time
in Omaha, and it is now known as Charles Schwab Field,
the ballpark downtown. The one other time, of course, was
twenty years ago. It was two thousand and five. They
met in the National Championship Series. Texas won both games,
(07:16):
Game one four to one and then Game two six
to four, and won the most recent National championship, the
sixth national title. On that Interestingly enough, the two thousand
and five National championship team from twenty years ago will
be honored here tomorrow at UFCU Dish falk Field in
(07:39):
the final edition of their tradition series tradition with the
DSCH in the middle of tradition there to market being
at UFCU dishwalk Field, but they're going to honor that
two thousand and five team, and during the game broadcast tomorrow,
(07:59):
Keith Moreland and I will be planning to visit with
Adrian Allenies who of course was outstanding retrot freshman pitcher
on that five team through a no hitter against Oklahoma,
won a stay alive game in the regional against Myva Ohio,
won a stay alive game in the Super Regional against
(08:22):
Ole Miss, won Game one of the College World Series
against Baylor, and then won Game one of that National
Championship series against Florida So and then of course Adrian
Allenes has made his mark as an outstanding high school
coach in the state of Texas. He coaches Sinton, who
won the state title three years ago in Class four
(08:44):
A with a senior catcher named Rylan Galvan.
Speaker 6 (08:49):
So.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
Ryland was on that and also Jique Stewart, Longhorns Reserve
DH was a junior on that team and they won
the state championship in twenty twenty two. In fact, I
think Senton went to three straight state tournaments twenty twenty one,
two and twenty twenty three.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
And I said, our plan is to visit with Adrian.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
And the reason why I say plan is the Pirates
are in the playoffs right now, but if things go
the way they wanted to go today, they will have
wrapped up their second round series against Theapata and then
Adrien and will be here tomorrow because he's the head
coach at Sinton. They were up, I believe in reading
(09:32):
his social media postings, they were up five to nothing
in the fourth inning.
Speaker 7 (09:39):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
And of course they play seven innings in baseball in
high school and they were up five to nothing in
the fourth inning and had to stop due to rain.
And they're playing in San Diego, Texas, which is between Zapata,
which is down by the you know, the border, and
of course is over by Corpus Christi. So they're picking
that series up in the fourth inning this afternoon and
(10:02):
then they're playing game two. It's the best of three series.
They're playing game two immediately after. If Sinton goes on
and they, like I said, they're up five to nothing
in game one. If they wind up winning both of
those games, they're done. Adrian and I text about this
the other night, and he said is his plan is
definitely to be here on Saturday with the team being honored.
(10:25):
If Zapota wins either game one or Game two, they
have to play a third game tomorrow and that would
get in the way of that. But I think Sentence
a pretty sizable favorite to handle its business to do that.
They're one of the best teams y're in year out,
so anyway that'll be the That'll be the case there,
all right. Speaking of long Horn Baseball, we'll hear from
(10:46):
a couple of long Horns this afternoon, and we may
also hear from Jim Schlasnego. In fact, we will hear
from coach Sloss at some point this afternoon, but we're
gonna hear from a couple of players as well. In
the next hour, we'll visit with Kimball Shchuschler or we'll
hear from his media availability.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
We'll hear from Kimball Schuchler.
Speaker 1 (11:07):
And coming up next the media availability with the sixth
year senior getting ready to be a part of his
final Senior Day at the University of Texas. Andre de
Plantier Dre will be taking part in the Senior Day
as a sixty year senior this weekend, and we'll hear
(11:30):
from him coming up, so we'll make sure to do that.
It is a Friday, we do have inconceivable, Cameron, you
do know what Friday with Inconceivable recognizes and means.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
It's not just Florida Man because the Florida Gators are
in town. It's a Florida Man Friday because of Inconceivable.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
That's right, that's right. The Florida Men are here to
play for the Gators. But Florida Man Friday is part
of Inconceivable. And we have some for one of a
better term, classic Florida Man offerings to give to you
coming up this afternoon. And then in the four o'clock hour,
our good friend and colleague Ty Harrington, our weekly conversation
(12:13):
on college baseball, and Ty will join us in the
four o'clock hour here at the ballpark. Ty is actually
working the ESPN Plus telecast of this series tomorrow and
Sunday Tonight. The game is being nationally televised on ESPNU,
and Keith Morland will be calling the game with Chris Burke.
(12:35):
That'll be on ESPNU tonight. Roger Wallace will join me
for the call of tonight's game here and then tomorrow
Keith will be with me, and then I will make
an exit relatively late in the game, around six or
seventh inningor something like that, in order to make sure
that I get to Waco in time to mc the
(12:57):
annual Texas High School Football Hall of Fame banquet, which
counts among its inductees this year, Patrick Mahomes.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
He'll be there.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
He's going to in Waco on Saturday, and so Roger
will be with us throughout the weekend. Obviously, Roger will
be with me tonight and then Roger will close it
out with Keith tomorrow, and then of course we have
the game on Sunday and Keith will join me for
that one. So that's kind of the calendar for the weekend.
Up next, we'll hear from Andre to Planchet. When we
continue from Ufcudish falk Field, I'm thirteen under the zone.
(13:29):
I want to hear Andrew Haynes with a call of
the walk off yesterday evening for the Longhorn softball team
against Ole Miss.
Speaker 8 (13:37):
Three two pitch, Scott drives up to center that goes
Duke gets over her head, one hops the wall. Maloney
scores and the Longhorns.
Speaker 5 (13:45):
Walk it off.
Speaker 8 (13:47):
Mia Scott comes through and keeps Texas alive in the
SEC tournament, a walk off double for the senior seven
to six win for the Longhorns. They are now nine
on the season and.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
It's onto the semifinal round. That was the game that
was heard right here on a thirteen hundred zone yesterday evening,
as Texas build a six to one lead on Ole Miss.
Ole Miss comes back to tie at six and had
the go ahead runs on base, including ninety feet away,
But the long Words managed to get out of that
fifth inning, and then Sibeli Goody Eras retired of being
(14:24):
an order in the sixth and the seventh, and then
in the bottom of the seventh inning, with a runner
on in one out, was a ground ball hit sharply
the second fielded really cleanly. They might have had a
shot at an inning ending double place certainly could have
gotten the lead runner, Ash Maloney at second base, but
second baseman bobbled the ball. I ended up not having
(14:46):
a play in the put runners at first and second,
and that set the stage for what you just heard me.
A sky will to walk off double to the wall
in dead center and the Long Horns win. So forty six,
and now the Horns will take on Texas A and
M and I do think that win if they hadn't
already in hearing it. And of course we had Mike White,
(15:06):
the head coach, on earlier this week, and in his
pregame interview with Andrew Hanges yesterday, he said pretty much.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
The same thing.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
By the way, it's fighter jets going overhead here at
the ballpark. That's what that noise is all about. And
Andrew asked them the same question I did. Do you
think that the team is in good shape to be
a top eight national seed regardless of the outcome of
this game, or do you need this win? And he
(15:40):
said it's pretty close. He said, I feel pretty good
about it what we've done, but I think a win
would certainly lock it in if it hadn't already. Well,
they have the win now, they're in the semifinals of
the tournament, so I'd say there's a real good chance
they're going to be a top eight national seed when
the bids are announced on Sunday. As we mentioned, long
Horn Baseball hoping to be that, hoping to be the
(16:01):
overall number one seed, which winning the Southeastern Conference regular
season title might well accomplish. In order to get that,
they need some wins in their final six games. They
do not need to stagger to the finish line. Probably
winning both series would do it. It would probably win
the SEC title and lockdown the number one seed. If
(16:22):
they were to win even say two games here this
weekend and two and Norman next weekend, or three and one,
or however however it goes down, the long Worns would
have a good shot to do that. As we mentioned,
they honor their seniors on the final weekend of the
regular season, and that includes the sixth year senior. Andre
de Plantier first came here in twenty nineteen pre pandemic.
(16:47):
Came here as a combo pitcher and third baseman, so
he fields his position well. This has been his most
consistent season on the mound in the long Worn uniform,
and he had an opportunity yesterday visiting with the media
discussing his time at UT.
Speaker 9 (17:03):
Cut off sleeves that a part of the crew will look. Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 6 (17:08):
As the nickname for that.
Speaker 9 (17:10):
But I think is that just in this season has
been kind.
Speaker 10 (17:12):
That was the season Once once the guy's found out
I've been here six years, they said, oh wow, your
uncle and it's stuck ever since.
Speaker 11 (17:20):
Are you ready to retire that nickname or do you
kind of you kind.
Speaker 4 (17:22):
Of like him? I like it.
Speaker 10 (17:24):
I like it walking in every day. Ruger is the
first person who's always like, hi, Uncle Andre. He like
really emphasizes Uncle Andre every day to just remind me,
you know, I'm a six year at.
Speaker 9 (17:35):
Ut Okay, does that come with a lot of responsibility
in your mind? Well?
Speaker 10 (17:41):
Yeah, I think being an older player always looking out
for players who are younger than you and setting a
good example, helping them out through whatever happens in the game.
Speaker 5 (17:51):
The six years is a long time to play college baseball.
Speaker 9 (17:54):
What is this ride been like? Uh?
Speaker 6 (17:56):
This ride has given me more than I could have
imagine walking.
Speaker 10 (18:01):
In here in twenty nineteen summer to sitting here right now.
I am only grateful for everything it's given me. I
just couldn't have imagined what the Longhorned brand and being
a part of this gave me.
Speaker 6 (18:17):
What will the emotions be like this weekend?
Speaker 3 (18:18):
Is you know, take the field for your last regular.
Speaker 10 (18:20):
Season home game, I'll be sure to take it all in.
I'm not sure how that's gonna be, but you can
bat walking in. I'll be very grateful to throw on
the jersey and be in front of these fans, be
with this team for another another opening day.
Speaker 12 (18:37):
You already know Doubt, you know Doubt will be in
the league. So is there a particular player that you
would love to catch a kidst or kitch to start downs?
Speaker 6 (18:48):
No, I don't.
Speaker 10 (18:48):
I don't have one that comes to mind off off
the top. I I don't have an answer for that one.
Speaker 9 (18:54):
Who are your closest friends in nineteen? When are they
all fathers now?
Speaker 6 (18:58):
Or they might have mortgages and two kids and all
that stuff.
Speaker 10 (19:04):
But I was roommates with Trey about TEENI we were
were always talked to him yesterday. He's been a close
friend of mine for a long time.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (19:13):
Have you thought about when you came in your first
year closing your playing some third and you you started
some relief some kind of thought of this, about the
your injury, the ups and down two Jersey members year,
six years here.
Speaker 6 (19:27):
Yeah, it's just it's been everything.
Speaker 10 (19:33):
I'm grateful to have played a game, a third here,
pitched at this time of the game, pitched at the
beginning of the game. All of it was to help
the Longhorns and kind of beating a dead horse. I
just could have imagined that I've been able to do
all that and still be here today.
Speaker 13 (19:51):
It truly is a family affair. You get to come
out here every single day and be with your brother.
He doesn't call you. Yeah, so what has that been like?
And and how cool is that for your family every
single week to come out here. And there's been some
times where y'all looked at each other off with him
playing second and you pitch it and been like, man,
we're here in Texas.
Speaker 6 (20:12):
Yeah, it just it just adds on to everything.
Speaker 10 (20:14):
It's like, Wow, I get to be a Longhorn while
I getting a a new experience with my new coaches.
I have all these new teammates, great players, and then
bang on top of that, my my brother. I get
to be in the same locker room with him and
go through the ups and downs with him.
Speaker 6 (20:32):
It's it's a blessing.
Speaker 10 (20:34):
It's I'm able to take that same approach with all
my teammates, like we're all brothers in here, and I
think it's been very helpful for all of us. It's
the number one Big Way, number one highlight for six years,
the first SEC win.
Speaker 6 (20:56):
Yeah, we really enjoyed that as a squad. That was
pretty special.
Speaker 10 (21:00):
We've been kind of talking about that all all fall,
getting prepared for it and to go on the road
and handle business.
Speaker 6 (21:09):
We enjoyed that about the individual in all life.
Speaker 10 (21:14):
MM probably most most recent time pitching at home versus
the Aggies helping the team win.
Speaker 6 (21:25):
Uh. I'll hold on to that one for some time.
That was fun. How have you seen this program change over.
Speaker 9 (21:31):
These past six years?
Speaker 10 (21:35):
It's changed s with from the time I walked in
until now. We're one unit more than ever. The love
that's in the team room is is unmatched all time high.
(21:55):
As far as the culture we have, we have standards,
we have you know, mission statements and things like that,
and I think everyone just has a clear understanding of
which direction we're all trying to go as a unit.
And that's that's the biggest change I've been able to experience.
Speaker 6 (22:12):
Did the dudes in your day after these last year
did not last year, but planning on it this year?
Speaker 11 (22:20):
Is there is there a reason why you decided to
stay at one school for at this school for the situation.
Speaker 10 (22:27):
Well, I came for a visit like a decade ago.
Speaker 6 (22:32):
I really liked I really liked the Longhorns. Being able
to be here. I love UT.
Speaker 10 (22:40):
I've met mentors, lots of people that just being here,
I was able to get those opportunities from being here,
and so I never wanted to leave. And got to
talk to coach Slash last summer and I was all
in for my first converse.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
We were just talking to Kimball and he was saying,
this weekend, they're looking, you know at this.
Speaker 14 (23:05):
Week as a positive.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
What did you guys learn from your first series loss?
Speaker 10 (23:12):
This That is a difficult conference, Like there's other good teams.
Speaker 6 (23:17):
And they can play ball two.
Speaker 10 (23:19):
And we decided as a group just to get together,
recommit and continue on. We we addressed what we needed
to talk about and keep moving forward.
Speaker 2 (23:29):
Oh have you seen the team?
Speaker 10 (23:30):
Recommit started with a meeting and then it's just the attitude,
Like walking through the building, everyone's just got that got
that look in their eyes.
Speaker 6 (23:41):
They're they're working to compete and help the.
Speaker 10 (23:43):
Team win in the next game, and we're letting what's
already happened be where it was.
Speaker 12 (23:48):
So you said, coach, talk to you in the springtime.
What exactly did you save you?
Speaker 10 (23:53):
What I was talking about was at the end of
last season. Uh, I was unsure what my future was.
Like here is a longhorn, and I was just asking
him if he saw if I could fit, how I
can help. I wanted to do it, and we both
agreed and I was like, okay, I'll I'll be back tomorrow.
Speaker 6 (24:11):
He kept working.
Speaker 4 (24:13):
Do you have like free degrees or anything?
Speaker 6 (24:16):
Just just to Uh.
Speaker 10 (24:17):
I did corporate communications and then in my fifth year,
I got a.
Speaker 6 (24:21):
Real estate license. Put some plan next play Florida.
Speaker 15 (24:29):
I don't have I don't have that far you know.
Yeah I'm here. Yeah, no, I'm here as long as
I can be anything else for.
Speaker 6 (24:43):
No.
Speaker 16 (24:44):
That was?
Speaker 2 (24:44):
That was okay?
Speaker 6 (24:45):
That was?
Speaker 9 (24:47):
And where else did you visit?
Speaker 5 (24:49):
Those just here?
Speaker 6 (24:52):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (24:53):
Yeah, I came here for a camp and uh they
liked me at the camp and that's all as for me.
Speaker 12 (25:01):
You want to keep playing baseball?
Speaker 1 (25:02):
Yes, of course, what a great what a great guy,
and funny. I loved his answer when asked about what's
next play Florida. Yeah, that's the next thing on the schedule.
That's Andre de Plantier, and I'm sure we'll see him
this weekend. Up next, we bring you a Friday edition
(25:24):
of Inconceivable Year on thirteen under the Zone. My name
is Greig Waite. Thanks for joining us. The producer of
this program is Cameron Parker. He is in our studios
at the iHeart Compound and we bring you the program
from the ballpark today because of the impending matchup tonight
between the top rank Texas Long Warrens and the twenty
(25:44):
second ranked Florida Gators. And Texas trying to close in
on an SEC championship, Florida trying to close in a
locking their spot in and even a better seed going
intense regional play in three weeks, they're still time for
There were several things to be settled and improved upon.
I'll give you an example. Auburn has been playing well
(26:06):
of late. They come off taking two out of three
from Tennessee. The Tigers were a fourteen or thirteen and
eleven going into the weekend. They had a Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
series against South Carolina, who is five and nineteen going
into the weekend. Last night, Auburn wiped out the game
(26:29):
Cocks twenty four to two in seven innings, so they
run ruled them because in SEC play every game is
subject in conference plays subject to the ten run rule,
the mercy rule. There In most I think non conference
games for teams in this league, the two sides agree
to it, not always, but in most cases they're not
(26:49):
required to. But in conference play they do adhere to
the ten run mercy rule. If you're up by ten
or more after seven innings or any point after that
after the seventh, the ballgame is over. So they win
last night twenty four to two. South Carolina drops to
five and twenty. They're in a free fall, right, Things
going horribly wrong for Paul Menary's ball club. So they
(27:09):
play game two this afternoon because they're playing a double
header because of the threat of impending bad weather. So
they're going to get their series finished by tonight and
Auburn out of the gate solid again and they jump
to a seven to two lead. Looks like it could
be wind up being maybe another run rule or a blowout. Well,
(27:31):
as is the case in the Southeastern Conference, that is
not always the case. And South Carolina not only has
come back, they've scored six unanswered runs and now in
the fifth inning they have taken an eight to seven
lead at Auburn. Such is the way of the Southeastern Conference.
(27:51):
So things can happen, the unexpected can happen, and we'll
see how it goes for the Long Warns tonight as
they take on the floor the Gators now, and we'll
get to that coming up, because we'll hear from Kimball Schusler.
We'll also hear from Longrton's head coach Jim Shlasnegel coming up,
(28:12):
and in the four o'clock hour, Ty Harrington will join
us to talk from college baseball. So there's a lot
on the table to set the table for this. Texas
softball is in the semifinal round of the SEC term.
By the way, that South Carolina Auburn game is now
on the top of the sixth with the game Cocks
up eight to seven. It's a team that's twenty six
(28:33):
and twenty four South Carolinas and they've just bunned for
BASI fully got all stops in that one. So they're
in the top of the six of that one. Texas
Softball is in the semifinal round of the SEC Tournament.
It's tournament week in Athens, Georgia, and the Longhorn's got
(28:54):
that dramatic walk off whenever ole Miss in the quarterfinals
yesterday seven to six, after having a six to one
lead evaporate when ole Miss scored five runs off teakm
Caban to tie the score at six. Sidalli Goudieas came
out of the Texas pen and she got the final
(29:14):
out of that inning and then two more scoreless frames
in the sixth and seventh, and in the bottom of
the seventh inning an error opened the door to have
runners at first and second and me it's got doubled
to dead center and that did it and Texas one
to seven six. So now the long runs are in
the semi final round against the number two seed Texas.
The three seed they play the two seed Texas A
and M.
Speaker 2 (29:35):
That is a five.
Speaker 1 (29:36):
Forty five to forty first pitch on that So it's
five twenty pre game start time and you can listen
to that on the iHeartRadio app. Connect to it through
the iHeartRadio app with if you don't have already have
a downloaded downloaded for free. It's easy, and then you
just you do the search for Retro Austin and you
(29:58):
pull it up from there and you heard Andrew Hayes
with a call here. Of course, we have the game
for you coming up this evening. It's a six to
fifteen pregame start time. It's a six point thirty first
pitch for this baseball series between Texas and Florida, and
you can connect to that through the iHeartRadio app. If
you don't have it downloaded, it's free and easy to
do it. We'll also tell you later this hour how
(30:19):
you can win tickets to see Alice Cooper and Judas
Priest in concert. We'll have that coming up for you
a little bit later on this hour, so you can
listen to the game connect to it through the iHeartRadio
app there. It is also available on the Texas Long
Orangs app and also on the LHN app as well.
(30:41):
Texas against Florida against six to fifteen pre game start time,
six thirty first pitch. Roger Willaso joined me for tonight's game.
Keith Moreland is working the telecast with Chris Burke on ESPN.
You and then Keith will join me for tomorrow's game
and Sunday's game in the series finale.
Speaker 2 (30:59):
All right to the NBA CAM.
Speaker 1 (31:03):
No surprise at all to see what Minnesota did the
Golden State last night, especially given the fact that the
Warriors had to had to do and we don't know
for how long, but are without Steph Curry and the
t Wolves took it to him.
Speaker 3 (31:15):
No surprise at all. The Warriors without Steph Curry just
a complete shell of himself and kind of thought, you know,
maybe in Game one the t Wolves would be able
to mount a comeback and win that game. After Steph
exit in the second quarter with the hamstring injury, Golden
Stay able to hold them off, but I felt like
a full four quarter game with no Steph, Golden State
(31:37):
just does not have the scoring options to stay afloat
with Minnesota unless the t Wolves just shot astronomically bad
like they did in Game one, and t Wolves shot
fifty percent from the floor forty three percent overall. Anthony
Edwards had a fine game, even though we did leave
with another injury concern, but the rest of his teammates
picked up the slack Nikile Alexander Walker at twenty points
(32:00):
off the bench, McDaniels with sixteen. Julius Randall continues his
strong play at twenty four points. I just don't think,
Craig that Golden State has enough firepower to stay in
this series without Steph Curry. And you know now it
sounds like Curry may not return until Game six and
series tied up at one to one, they're going back
to Golden State. But I mean, Minnesota might be able
(32:21):
to win this in five games before before Curry comes back.
Speaker 5 (32:25):
So it's gonna take.
Speaker 3 (32:26):
You're gonna need Jimmy Butler to play like Jimmy Butler
did in the NBA Finals runs He's had the two
previous times with the Miami Heat where he basically just
put the team on his shoulders and carried them to
the final. Golden State needs that Jimmy Butler if they
want to stay in the mix in this series, because
by the time cray may come back, it might be
(32:47):
too little, too late.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
Do The Warriors also need Draymond Green to play, as
he said others have self described him as an angry
black man.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
You know that he said that those comments last night,
and someone compiled on Twitter a ten minute video compilation
of just this postseason, not his career, of the twenty
twenty five postseason, of Draymond lashing out, yelling at players,
at referees, getting into scuffles, getting technicals.
Speaker 5 (33:17):
So you know he has a track record here.
Speaker 3 (33:20):
I mean he punched his teammate, like he punched his
teammate in a practice, So it's not like he doesn't
have a past.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
History of this, Craig, and he was very upset. He
says there's an agenda to portray him as an angry
black man. This came from the fact nas Reed foalt him.
He definitely fouled him while holding the ball there in
the second quarter. But after being fouled, Green kind of
(33:49):
flailed his left arm.
Speaker 2 (33:51):
Around at Reed's head, knocked him to the floor.
Speaker 1 (33:54):
Reid was called for the personal foul, but Green was
assessed the dead ball technical foul after the review. So
now he has five technical fouls, right, he's too short
of receiving an automatic one game suspension. He can also
draw a one game suspension if he receives two more
(34:14):
flagrant foul points. One would be you know, a flagrant one,
and he would get two assessed against him, two points
if it's a Flagrant two, but he gave a quick
statement to reporters saying that he believes there's an agenda
against him. This is what he said to reporters. The
lack of quote looked like the angry black man. I'm
(34:36):
not an angry black man. I'm a very successful, educated
black man with a great family, and I'm great at
basketball and great at what I do. The agenda to
keep making me look like an angry black man is crazy.
I'm sick of it. It's ridiculous. So anyway, and let's
be also fair on this. There was a fan ejected
(34:59):
from game for directing a racial slur at Draymond Green.
He was on a stationary bike in the tunnel in
the fourth quarter and he had a back and forth
with a fan. Authorities escorted the fan out of the arena.
The Timberwolves released a statement saying one fan was ejected
for violating the NBA Fan Code of Conduct, and then
(35:21):
a second fan was identified by surrounding patrons as quote
making racially charged comments toward Green end quote, But the
Timberwolves said that the individual left on his own before
security could confirm his identity. Now, they did say they're
investigating in that additional action may be taken off of that.
(35:42):
So it just it continues to get deeper and deeper
on a lot of this stuff and agenda notwithstanding, like
you said, the track records not helping Draymond Green out
of all of this, and.
Speaker 3 (35:54):
A lot of it too, Craig is this is the
image he has constructed. He has always wanted to play
the villain role, right, and that's you know, kind of
like he says, he plays his best when he's fired up,
when he's getting other players on the opposite team, you know,
get ruffling their feathers, right, an instigator at times. Now,
don't take away from the fact that he's one of
(36:14):
the best defensive players probably of all time, and what
he's done with Golden State. I mean, there is no
there's seth Curry does not have his what three rings
four rings without Draymond Green's role for Golden State. But
part of that is what he does on the court
in his theatrics. Remember the three to one lead the
Golden State had over Cleveland, right, the incredible comeback Lebron's
(36:36):
first chip in Cleveland. A big catalyst in Cleveland's comeback
was Draymond getting technical, getting that whatever it was seventh
eight technical where he was end up being suspended and
he missed I think it was Game five or Game six,
and then Cleveland's able to win that and then force
a game seven.
Speaker 5 (36:54):
You know, that's part of the Draymond Green experience.
Speaker 3 (36:56):
I mean that playoff Ronnie kicked Steven Adams in the nuts. Now,
of course, was it on accident, was it on purpose?
Speaker 4 (37:04):
You know?
Speaker 5 (37:04):
Who knows.
Speaker 3 (37:05):
But this is part of his identity and it's who
he wants to be. It's who he has belt Greg.
It's not what ESPN or Fox or fans have given
to him, it's what he has belt himself.
Speaker 1 (37:21):
The Draymond Green experience is any Is that anything like
the new wave band of the early eighties, the QTE
Beaumont experience that took its name for the Ward Cleaver
dad On leave it to Beaver, Hugh Beaumont.
Speaker 3 (37:33):
I just you know, it's like was that Jason Bonham
he had a led Zeppelin's experience.
Speaker 5 (37:38):
It's kind of it's Straymond Green's experience.
Speaker 1 (37:40):
Okay, all right, I'm glad you clarified that. Okay, all right,
coming up, we're gonna hear from Kimball. Schusler, but we've
got some other things to get to as well. Also,
we'll hear from Long Horns head coach Jim Slasnakel as
we continue on this Friday afternoon Longhorns getting some early
work in in the cage and getting ready to have
(38:01):
their full on batting practice on the field before they
take on the Florida Gators. It is a Friday afternoon
a series opening Friday at UFCU diish Fogg Field on
thirteen under the zone as Long Runs get ready to
take on the Florida Gators tonight. The in SEC baseball
still going on right now. South Carolina up eight seven
(38:21):
on Auburn with the Tigers batting in the bottom of
the sixth inning with runners on the corners and nobody else,
so they're threatening to tie end or take the lead. Now,
Texas Softball plays in the SEC Tournament summifinals against Texas
A and M.
Speaker 2 (38:36):
And that semifinal.
Speaker 1 (38:40):
Will be played at five forty our time this afternoon.
Again you can listen to it connect through the iHeartRadio
app beginning at five twenty and.
Speaker 2 (38:50):
Texas against Texas A and M.
Speaker 1 (38:52):
That's the three seed against the two seed, the one
seed is, of course, the regular season champion, the defending
national Championians from Oklahoma, who we're playing Arkansas in the
other semifinal. Arkansas has been having this charm life with
grand slams late. They got to walk off grand Slam
in their first round game and then in the quarterfinally
got another Grand Slam yesterday and beating Tennessee. Well, they
(39:15):
don't have a Grand Slam, but they do hold a
two to nothing lead on the Sooners. And Oklahoma's batting
in the bottom of the first inning at the SEC
Tournament they're in Athens. We'll keep you a post on
that all right, Back to the NBA for a moment.
There are two more series games tonight. Both of them
are game threes in this because all four series now
(39:38):
have had the first two games in the book two
of the series. They're both in the East, where the
road team holds a two game to none lead. In
the West, the series is even at one one. Tonight.
Cleveland is at Indiana. Indiana is up two games to none.
Cam is this thing next to done? Or will the
Cavaliers play like the one see they are and get
(40:01):
in the win column for the first time in the series.
Speaker 3 (40:03):
Well, it's it's got to be a must win for
for Cleveland obviously. I think we're still waiting to see
the injury report for Cleveland. I remember they played Game
two without Darius Garland, DeAndre Hunter, and who I'm missing
one other player, but three of their starters were out
in game two.
Speaker 5 (40:20):
Game three, even even on the road.
Speaker 3 (40:22):
Now, you know you're almost in a possible situation for
for Cleveland to come back from three zero, right, I mean,
how many teams have done that in the history of
the NBA playoffs?
Speaker 5 (40:32):
I think zero?
Speaker 3 (40:33):
If I know, it's happened in hockey for some reason,
happened hockey a couple of times, but it doesn't happen
in the NBA playoffs and for good reason. So for
for Cleveland waiting to see if they're going to get
their guys back.
Speaker 5 (40:45):
Evan Molby was the third player that did not play.
But shoot, Craig.
Speaker 3 (40:48):
I mean, if you know you're down three to nothing,
all of a sudden, the number one seed in the
Eastern Conference could be gone.
Speaker 2 (40:55):
Yeah, I think it's checkmate.
Speaker 1 (40:56):
History tells us so in any way, I think it
has happened only two times in NBA history that a
team down three nothing, forced a game said. One of
them was Portland against the Mavericks I remember one year.
Speaker 2 (41:15):
And Dallas managed to win game seven.
Speaker 1 (41:16):
The other was I think the nineteen fifty one NBA
Finals Rochester Royals, which are now known as the Sacramento Kings,
because first they were the Rochester Royals, then they were
the Cincinnati Royals for years, and then they were the
Kansas City Omaha Kings, and then they were just the
Kansas City Kings, and then the Sacramento Kings. I think
they had a three to nothing lead on the Knicks
(41:37):
and New York came back to tiet and forced it. Well, no,
Boston Miami a couple of years ago, right in the
Boston Miami Series, wasn't it Miami up three nothing, Boston
forced a game seven, and Miami won it.
Speaker 2 (41:53):
I believe.
Speaker 4 (41:56):
So.
Speaker 1 (41:56):
I think it's happened I guess three times there. But
history teaches is that if you fall behind three games
to none, it's pretty much a death sentence.
Speaker 2 (42:06):
At that point.
Speaker 1 (42:07):
You can prolong, prolong it, but it usually means you're
merely prolonging the inevitable. And so Cleveland it has that
situation staring them in the face playing on the road.
Same story for the Boston Celtics. Now they don't play
until tomorrow against the Knicks, but they have to go
to a rabid Madison Square Garden, where we were talking
(42:29):
about yesterday, the highest ticket price ever listed on the
secondary ticket market for a New York Knicks game at
Madison Square Garden, highest ticket price ever one of them
is like seven hundred and twenty six dollars. I think
that's just to get in the building. That's to be
(42:49):
in what's called the blue seats, the one way up
at the top of the arena up there. And so
Nick fans, we be going crazy is they get ready
to place the Celtics who are down two games, and
then after dropping the first two at home, that's tomorrow afternoon.
Speaker 2 (43:05):
Is that contest?
Speaker 1 (43:07):
But Cleveland and Indiana are tonight and Cleveland staring history
at the face if they can't win tonight to go
from there. In the West, both of those series are
one to one, and one of those continues tonight. Cam
your Oklahoma City Thunder playing in Denver, it's one to one.
(43:29):
But are the Thunder back on firm ground now after
turning it around and blasting the Nuggets in Game.
Speaker 5 (43:39):
Two, I hope.
Speaker 3 (43:40):
So I mean thinking back to Game two where they
absolutely just decimated Denver from the tip and you know,
even even myself was thinking, man, it should be two nothing.
But you know what, maybe game two does not happen
if not for okay See completely collapsing down there in
the fourth quarter. And you know, okay See of course
has the largest point differential in NBA. His in so
(44:01):
many games this season, Craig, they would just be blowing
teams out in the third chord and you get to
the fourth quarter and you know it's not playing your starters,
you know, and ultimately overall, okay See did not play
in too many close games this season because you know,
they're blowing out most of the teams they played in.
And looking back to the first round against Memphis, I mean,
the won game one against the Grizzlies by by fifty
(44:23):
one points. Uh, Game two they win by thirty points.
Game three was the really well. Games three and four
a little bit tight, but game three they had to
come from behind and win. In Game four, you know,
there's no John Morant, so it's a little bit different.
So you know, sometimes I do think like a game
like that could actually benefit Okay See going forward. Now,
of course they lose the series and you know it
(44:43):
won't matter anyway, but I'm hopeful that Game one's collapse
is going to help Okay seeing benefit them in this
series going forward. I mean, they are the better team
than Denver. The question is Ken Jokic, you know, is
he going to be Superman tonight? But we'll see me.
I mean, there's only been a day off in between
(45:03):
each game, so I'm curious if just to wear and
tear is going to continue to catch up to Denver
like I think it did in Game two because they
just did not look interested in playing in that basketball
game now, you know, Okay see, he was a little
bit more aggressive. Maybe that was it, Maybe not so
much just being tired, but hey, you know, you are
playing in a higher elevation, so there will be an
adjustment for Oka see. But you know, they definitely have
(45:26):
the fresher legs as opposed to Denver.
Speaker 2 (45:28):
Yeah, no doubt about all right.
Speaker 1 (45:30):
And then, of course, the other one we talked about
is Minnesota and Golden State, and they will play tomorrow
night as the series shifts to San Francisco with a
series tied at a game of peace. Speaking of tide,
Auburn coming back first to tie South Carolina and now
to reclaim the lead on the game Cocks.
Speaker 2 (45:50):
They were up seven to two.
Speaker 1 (45:51):
South Carolina had six on the answer to go up,
and now Auburn is just at a home run. Lucas
Steele with a home run to put Auburn back up
ten to eight. And that contest is in the bottom
of the sixth inning. As I mentioned sec he saw
Paul Tournament going on right now and Oklahoma trailing Arkansas
by a score of two to nothing in that one.
(46:11):
All right, up next, Cameron's gonna get you set up
for the media availability. You hear the words from Longhorns,
another one of those long in the two veterans, the
fifth year senior Kimball Shchuschler.
Speaker 2 (46:23):
You'll hear from him.
Speaker 1 (46:25):
Also, I'm gonna go down and visit with Jim Slasnaig
when we'll come back in the a little bit after that,
we're gonna hear from coach Sloss. And then Ty Harrington's
gonna join us in the four o'clock hour as well.
All that and more when we continue from UFCU, Dishfark field.
Speaker 2 (46:40):
I'm thirteen under the zone.
Speaker 3 (46:41):
A big part of their success this season has been
Kimball Schuesler. He's been the transition over from ketcher to
first base, and Kimball has been an absolute menace at
the plate all season long, batting above three hundred and
three to eight batting average and second on the team
in hits in fifty seven hits so far this season.
Kim Will talked to the media yesterday about Senior Day,
(47:03):
as the sixth year senior will play his final regular
season games this weekend and possibly his final games at
the Dish in two or three weeks when NCAA Baseball
Regional rolls around. But Kimball talked about his six years
at Texas, the transition from A and M to Austin
and is what is it meant for him.
Speaker 5 (47:25):
To be a Texas Longhorn.
Speaker 6 (47:27):
Yeah, looking forward to the big weekend.
Speaker 9 (47:32):
Did you learn about your team after last week?
Speaker 17 (47:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 18 (47:35):
I mean, obviously we didn't get the results that we wanted,
and it's really never a bad thing to get punched
in the mouth. I think we've been really successful up
to that weekend, and I think it was good for
us to just look back and reflect and we obviously
didn't play to our standards.
Speaker 9 (47:51):
And the scoreboard reflected that.
Speaker 18 (47:54):
But it's it's just another opportunity for us to recommit
and play some great ball here at home.
Speaker 6 (48:01):
You see what you wanted for your team on two seventy.
Speaker 18 (48:04):
Yeah, I think our offense got off to kind of
a slow start, but uh, we turned it around later
in the game, and I think they were gonna ride
that momentum this weekend.
Speaker 10 (48:15):
Come what you might have already said this, but just
emotions about set your day this weekend.
Speaker 18 (48:19):
Yeah, I mean it's definitely gonna be an emotional day,
as is my fourth year here. And I can't thank
the previous staff, Coach Pierce, Coach Miller, all those guys
too low that enough that they gave me the opportunity
to come here, because they've really they've really changed my life,
and I'm really thankful for all the opportunities that I've
had here, and obviously coach Loss coming in here and
(48:40):
giving me the opportunity to stay and come back for
another year has been amazing.
Speaker 9 (48:43):
So there's just too many people here that I need
to think.
Speaker 19 (48:47):
Yeah, obviously getting smoked is never ideal, but during a
season you know you are gonna go through ups and downs.
Speaker 20 (48:52):
What do you guys feel like maybe you've learned from
that hard patch.
Speaker 18 (48:56):
Yeah, I mean, you don't really know who you are
until you get back into the corner and have to respond. So,
I mean, I think it's a great thing for our team.
We've had a ton of success, but you know, there
were obviously you know, we're gonna we were gonna lose
a series eventually, so I mean, just the way we
responded on Tuesday and then the work we've put in
after that Arkansas series has definitely been right. So I
(49:18):
think we're we're gonna be prepared for this weekend.
Speaker 13 (49:21):
But initially you were an age. Now you're finishing your
career as a Texas long er. What has it meant
to you to be a Texas longer?
Speaker 18 (49:29):
Yeah, I mean it's it's been everything that I've ever
dreamed of coming here, you know, coming here for the
first time, I was kind of skeptical, didn't really know
what to expect. But just the winning tradition and the
people that I've met here, the coaching staff, this this
what this baseball program has done for me has been incredible.
And you know, whether I go play in the big
(49:49):
leagues for twenty years or after.
Speaker 9 (49:51):
Go get a job.
Speaker 18 (49:52):
I know that my time here is gonna help me
be a successful person after baseball, and I think that's
really matters.
Speaker 13 (49:58):
And you've also been a foundation a type of player.
What is it that you want to leave for those
guys that come after you as what it's like to
be a texta player.
Speaker 18 (50:08):
Yeah, I think the I just want to leave my
legacy here that I was a player that really had
to earn everything that they had.
Speaker 9 (50:14):
He had, you know, he wasn't really given much.
Speaker 18 (50:16):
He had to spend hours and hours here and that
he's finally seeing some of that work show up on
the field. So just just kind of guys like younger
guys in a program like Chamberlain A. Rod, some of
those position players, just being able to mentor them and
tutor them every day has been has been great. And
I hope you know in a couple of years when
(50:37):
they're sitting here, they're they're saying the same thing, like,
you know, shoots Will really helped me, and I wanted
to continue that legacy on because I think that's what
great programs were built off of.
Speaker 12 (50:46):
Kimbell. So imagine as a little kid, you dreamt of
being in this situation. You're playing at this level. How
has your dreams changed? You dream about being at the
play in the big leagues, playing in the World Series.
Speaker 20 (50:58):
What is there some of your dreams.
Speaker 18 (51:00):
Yeah, I think just coming into my last year of college,
obviously it's my fifth year, my only dream was I
just wanted to win a national championship and I wanted
to come to this field and prepare with my teammates
every day like we're going out and winning the national championship.
So I mean just putting myself in those moments at practice,
you know, in the games we're playing now, that's gonna
(51:21):
prepare us for you know when that time comes.
Speaker 19 (51:24):
Coming off of last weekend, who have some of the
loudest voices in the locker room?
Speaker 6 (51:29):
Who's that been.
Speaker 9 (51:31):
I wouldn't say it's anyone different. I mean.
Speaker 18 (51:34):
I would say, just like infield wise, me and Jalen
and Ryland have just had to be very vocal. And
I'll go back to this. I don't think it's a
bad thing we lost. I think it was just a
good time just for us to recommit. So that's been
the message this week. Is just recommit to our core
values and what we do and we know when we
do that, we'll be in a good spot.
Speaker 4 (51:54):
You know, you've been around for a while. You're not
the oldest guy on this team.
Speaker 6 (51:57):
What is a Drey's presence that for this program?
Speaker 18 (52:01):
Yeah, Dre is awesome. I mean there's not a bigger
Longhorned fan like through and throughout than Dre on this team.
And he's seen a lot. He's seen this program kind
of at the bottom and now now it's trending upwards.
So it's just cool to learn from that guy because
he's seen so much. I think he's like top ten
in appearances and and pitching it all the time here.
Speaker 9 (52:22):
So just just being around him and getting to learn
from his experiences have been really.
Speaker 6 (52:26):
Cool for me.
Speaker 12 (52:27):
Kim, who whose idea was a shirt.
Speaker 18 (52:31):
It, Coach Loss actually send us uh something like this
in our team group chat and we we kind of
just adopted it and then he got.
Speaker 6 (52:40):
Us see shirts.
Speaker 5 (52:40):
What does it mean to the group, Just.
Speaker 18 (52:43):
Like we're just a gritty team and we're gonna we're
gonna win anyway. We're gonna find a find a way
to beat you. And I think that's that's our mentality.
Speaker 7 (52:50):
Now, did the Arkansas we punctury any air of indibstability?
Speaker 12 (52:57):
Do you guys seem to field up or.
Speaker 6 (53:00):
No, not at all.
Speaker 18 (53:00):
I think we kind of viewed as a good thing.
You know, it's never a bad thing. When you get
punched in the mouth, It just reveals your real character
and how a team really is. So again, we're just
going back to recommitting to our core values and our
mission statement for the program.
Speaker 9 (53:14):
And we know that's going to post in a great
spot this weekend.
Speaker 3 (53:18):
Despite the reaction on social media, the season is not
over with for Texas baseball. They saw a two game
lead over Arkansas and head into this weekend, the but
ultimate weekend and conference play with a chance to win
the conference regular season championship outright Florida this week and
then the end of season against Oklahoma up in Norman.
(53:38):
And well, you guys might have seen it on Twitter yesterday,
Max Plue actually was taking live pitches and Jim Slowsningle
did say in his media availability yesterday that there is
a chance, if all things go well for Max Palou,
he could return to the baseball field next week in Norman.
(53:59):
We do know that we would love to have Max
Blue back at all, especially in the postseason. Texas and
Florida Game one of the three game weekend series tonight.
You can hear Game one on one O three one FM,
Austin's eighty station as Craig Way and Roger Wallace will
have the call of tip off or rather tip off sorry,
first pitch six thirty pm. Airtime at six fifteen pm,
(54:22):
and you can listen to it for free on the
iHeart Radio app. We'll be back to wrap up hour
two on the Craigway Show after this.
Speaker 1 (54:30):
Craig Way with you from UFCU, Dish falk Field, Cameron
Park of course from the studio, and Cameron took you
through the back half of that three o'clock hour when
I was down visiting with log Orangs head coach Jim Schlosnegger.
You're going to hear that conversation coming up here momentarily,
so stand by for that second segment. Ty Harrington joins
us as he does each week, with our look at
(54:51):
college baseball, the Longhorns, the SEC and the national scene
as well. That's coming up in the second segment of
the program in just a few minutes. We'll hear from
Long Orange Head coach Jim Slastingle Now Texas of course
plays Florida tonight and it's a six fifteen pre game
start time at the six thirty first pitch. You can
(55:13):
hear that on one oh three point one FM, that's
Austin's eight station. If you want to listen on the app,
you go to the iHeartRadio app and if you haven't
already downloaded, you can do it, and then then you
would want to search Retro Austin. Retro Austin is where
you'll find that game there. It's also available in the
(55:33):
Texas Long Orange app and the LHN app as well.
And Roger Wallerso joined me for the call of tonight's game.
It is a six to fifteen pregame start time and
a six thirty first pitch. Tomorrow and Sunday, both games
are at one o'clock Tomorrow afternoon and Sunday afternoon, both
games are at one o'clock tomorrow. It would be a
(55:55):
great day to be here at the ballpark as well,
twentieth anniversary of the two Talents and five National Championship
and the lanner that two thousand and five National Championship team,
so there'll be several guys from that national championship team
they're planning to visit during the game broadcast war with
Adrian Allenes, who of course was a key part of
that through a no hitter as a red shirt freshman
(56:18):
that year against Oklahoma, and then won an elimination game
against Baiame of Ohio in the regional here, then won
another elimination game or win or go home game against
Ole Miss in Game two of that Super Regional series,
then won Game one in Omaha over Baylor, and then
won Game one of the National Championship series against Florida.
(56:41):
Adrian had a fabulous red shirt freshman a freshman All
American season, and of course he's now the head baseball
coach at Sinton High School, one of the top teams
in the state. And four A, they're in a playoff
series with the PATA. They're playing that over in San Diego,
not California, San Diego, and they the game had gotten
(57:03):
stopped due to weather last night when.
Speaker 2 (57:07):
Sent was up five to nothing in the fourth inning.
Speaker 1 (57:09):
So they're completing that first game this afternoon and then
playing game two with.
Speaker 2 (57:12):
That best of three series tonight.
Speaker 1 (57:14):
If they win both those ball games, then they'll win
that series, and Adrian will be here with his teammates
tomorrow afternoon. All right, Like I said, coming up in
a few minutes, we'll talk college baseball of the Texas variety,
the SEC variety in the national scene with Ty Harrington.
But just a few minutes ago downstairs and visiting with
long Worn's.
Speaker 2 (57:32):
Head coach Jim Slosnagel.
Speaker 1 (57:34):
Let me start with something yesterday rasted your media availability,
because I know fans are wanting updates how the walking
wounded her coming along, most notably of course Max Blue,
and how his progress continues to get him closer to
the target you were kind of thinking about a few
weeks back.
Speaker 17 (57:53):
Yeah, I mean, he's definitely chumping at a bit to play.
He's made, you know, I think, pretty significant progress in
the last week to the point there was a time
about ten days ago where it hurt to even hold
a bat, and now he's swinging at pretty much full
speed on what we would call underhand flips. And then
he's swinging full speed against what we call light flight ball,
(58:17):
so just super soft baseballs, super soft ball that gets
shot out of a machine at a high velocity. So
he's getting the bat speed training going, but as soon
as you put a normal baseball in there, or have
like two low throwing VP then the right Now. I
haven't seen him today, but the impact of the bat
of the ball to the bat at that.
Speaker 5 (58:40):
Degree still bothers him. So it's better, you know.
Speaker 17 (58:44):
I think when he hopped in there the first couple
of days and started swinging and felt fine on the
front flip on the flips, and felt fine on the
velocity softer balls, he was like, man, I think he
felt like he was going to transition pretty easily, but
it just hasn't happened yet. So we'll keep going. And
he stands in on every bullpen that there is. He
stands in against the machines and tries to, you know,
(59:06):
simulate the game as best we can. Today, when he
does get back, he's capable of stepping.
Speaker 4 (59:10):
Right in there.
Speaker 1 (59:11):
You also have had to deal with a flu bug
sweeping through your ball club. Is pretty much everybody cleared
the hurdles on that.
Speaker 17 (59:17):
I think, so Coach Kine had it yesterday. You know,
Winfield and Mendoza had a Tuesday night. I think I
think we had six or seven guys in Arkansas that
had I don't think they knew it was the flu,
but they just weren't feeling great or they thought it
was allergies, different things, and then it kind of turned
on them when we got back. So we've been pumping
tama flu in everybody, including myself to try and avoid
(59:40):
all that stuff, so hopefully, and then we did a
big deep cleaning of this place, I think on Tuesday
night or Wednesday night, So maybe that helped a little bit.
Speaker 1 (59:47):
Okay, I know you're you're looking for a big deep
cleaning from last weekend against Arkansas, and he got on
the road back toward that with the win against Lamar.
I thought it was kind of interesting in that your
team did a really good job being selected, but I
heard you on the post game telling Keith that it
had its frustrating moments because you had some opportunities and
couldn't get the big hits until late.
Speaker 2 (01:00:09):
In the eighth.
Speaker 17 (01:00:10):
Yeah, I mean, you know, most of our most of
those situations, I think we only had two where we
had a runner at third base in less than two outs,
and that was Rodriguez taking a strike three and Jalen
hitting a queuing the ball at the end of the
bat that didn't score a run. The rest of them were,
you know, Jonah had I don't know if I've ever
seen three at bats with the bases loaded much at bat,
much less three at bats with the bases loaded in
(01:00:31):
two outs. So those are obviously super frustrating because you're,
you know, you know, a big hit or even just
a walk, we'll we'll break the game open a little bit.
But that's that's you know, if you play baseball long enough,
those things were going to happen. I thought we pitched
The highlight of that night was, you know, the ability
for the guys who don't pitch a ton for us
or are starting to pitch more. I mean, Howard's starting
(01:00:51):
to pitch more, Hamilton's doing really well, Ethan Walker's been
a great find. I thought those guys did a nice
job against the team that's you know, got thirty seven
thirty eight wins.
Speaker 1 (01:01:00):
Speak at a pitching Let me get your thoughts on
the conversations and how the week has gone for Ruger
leading up to this.
Speaker 17 (01:01:08):
You have to ask Max, I mean, you know that
we had a conversation with I mean I had a
conversation with the entire team about just kind of recommitting
to who we are, you know, offensively and on the mound.
And then I know Max had a big powwow with
the pitchers and kind of reminding them and even giving
them raw data about when we throw the ball in
(01:01:28):
the strike zone, what happens, and the batting average is
less than one hundred when you throw them, but just
throw the ball in the strike zone, and then they
when you throw the ball middle middle, you know, we
can quantify with the track man when the ball is
literally in the middle of the plate, it's a little
bit over one hundred. So just reminding guys that you
got to fill up the strike zone give us the
(01:01:50):
best chance. And this weekend, you know, we're gonna play
in a bigger ballpark and looks like the north winds
here for three days, so.
Speaker 2 (01:01:58):
Shame on you for not doing strikings well.
Speaker 1 (01:01:59):
And the final thing, since we're talking about meetings, I
know Tula wanted to get the hitters together the other night.
So at this time of year, there's the recommitment that
you talked about, but there's also a redefining of things
as you draw closer towards the time that matters most.
Speaker 17 (01:02:14):
Yeah, I mean, I think you know I wasn't in
that meeting, but I know it was about two hours long,
and it wasn't so much a meeting as it was
a conversation as asking guys, hey, what do you think
in this situation? You know, like for instance, Shuster had basically,
you know, Kimball, why are you swinging at that one
tozero pitch that's running in on your hands, like the
pressures on the pitcher, Like you can make the guy
center of the baseball.
Speaker 5 (01:02:34):
Otherwise take your walk.
Speaker 2 (01:02:35):
So some of those conversations.
Speaker 17 (01:02:37):
But I think what happens in the season is guys
you ride the ebbs and flows of slumps and different things,
and different things get in people's minds. Right, is it
my swing? And it's normally it's not your swing. It's
the pitches you're swinging at. Right, Your swing for the
most part, stays the same. The timing could be different, right,
you know, We've seen plenty of guys that with below
average swings, but they're on time and they can hit.
(01:02:57):
And we've seen a lot of guys with beautiful swing
they can't get on time, that can't hit. So I
think it's just a recommitment, you know, and just and
then also going around Troy does a great job of
each individual player and finding what they do best and
and just being encouraging to them that you know you're capable.
Speaker 1 (01:03:14):
Yeah, there's there's this constant reinforcement that goes on. Like
I said, you know in setting aside the second segment
for a ty Herrington always infringe him and more on
this time since he's since he's here now, So I
want I wanted to get your perspective it you heard
heard it there were Slass was talking about, uh, just
(01:03:35):
getting guys to understand and and at this time of year,
because as I mentioned, there was a Hitters meeting that
Tulow call the other night, Max was visiting with the pictures.
There's just there's there's an ongoing reinforcement of the good
and being able to make sure the guys understand the
difference between the good and the not good.
Speaker 2 (01:03:53):
Isn't there at this time of year.
Speaker 21 (01:03:55):
Well, I think there's a huge impact on that knowledge
because it's no different than any other sport. But let's
just take for example, the game of golf. All right,
these guys, those pros go out there and they hit
balls after ball after ball, but they each have a
putting coache. They each have a shortened coad swen coach. Right, Okay,
(01:04:15):
so everything's rocking and rolling and everything's fine. Just like
what's been going on here. They've been playing game after
game after game after game, travel, travel, game, travel, all
those things, and so you don't get that personal time
that you probably need to. Always give them the data,
always give them information, and usually what brings it out
(01:04:35):
is what failure, something that doesn't go right.
Speaker 4 (01:04:38):
Golf's no different.
Speaker 21 (01:04:39):
Baseball is exact same, being baseball more so than any
other sport because it's based off of failure. Truthfully, when
you get right down to it, you've all been you
know the difference in that. But I think them to
being able to coordinate the data, coordinate what's going on
and then communicate it is so huge.
Speaker 4 (01:04:57):
And now I think that you.
Speaker 21 (01:04:59):
Know what little knowledge I know inside the doors in
the Texas locker room.
Speaker 4 (01:05:03):
I know how much they.
Speaker 21 (01:05:06):
Influence will reflect data, and I know how much it means.
Speaker 4 (01:05:10):
Max Sweener talks about it all the time.
Speaker 21 (01:05:12):
Jim Stosnengle talks about as much as any coach I've
ever been around. But it's not just he's not just
throwing a number at you. There's a depth to his
reason why he throws something out there at you, and
and I just think they got to the point where
that was win play, win play practice, win play, travel, travel,
and then all of a sudden you run into a
bumping the road in Arkansas. Who some people think, and
(01:05:35):
it's been discussing. I think it's real. Not taking anything
away from anybody on paper, I think Arkansas is a
legitimate thought about playing in Omaha for you.
Speaker 4 (01:05:46):
Know, championships. I think anybody, yes, I think so. I
think that's fair.
Speaker 21 (01:05:50):
I mean, look, I didn't deep dive into their stuff
until the Thursday before.
Speaker 4 (01:05:57):
Y'all went up there that morning.
Speaker 21 (01:05:58):
You know, I'm sorry Wednesday night did before you all
played on Thursday, right, and I was going digging through
the numbers.
Speaker 4 (01:06:03):
I was like, oh my god.
Speaker 2 (01:06:04):
You went Butch Cassidy and said, who are these guys?
Speaker 4 (01:06:07):
I was like, what is it calling? Why haven't these guys?
Why aren't they undefeated? Kind of thing?
Speaker 8 (01:06:10):
Right?
Speaker 21 (01:06:11):
But it's the SEC, right, and they've lost three series
in a row or something like that.
Speaker 4 (01:06:15):
But their power, you know, is unreal. But point being,
then then you run end up umping the road and.
Speaker 21 (01:06:21):
The great news for Texas fans. And if I'm a
player at Texas and I've had a rough week or
two or something, I.
Speaker 4 (01:06:28):
Know that I've got the data. I know that I've
got the.
Speaker 21 (01:06:30):
Personal and coaching to be able to help me through
that and give it to me.
Speaker 1 (01:06:35):
We're gonna talk more about Texas, obviously, we're going to
talk about the SEC in the national scene as well.
By the way, just so you'll know, updating SEC Softball
Tournament semifinals. The one seed, the defending national champion, Oklahoma
down six to one to Arkansas in the bottom of
the third inning. Arkansas had a real charmed life in
(01:06:55):
this tournament. They got to walk off grand slam in
the first round or they'd gotten a single by so
it'd be the second round of the tournament. They did that,
and that was to win on Wednesday, and then or
let's see, was it Wednesday, Yeah, and then got a
(01:07:15):
grand slam yesterday to win to get to the semifinals,
and now they're in the semifinals. They had a two
run homer, not a grand slam, but they're up six
to one on Oklahoma right now. Of course, the winner
of that is going to play the winner of the
game that's scheduled to go at five forty Texas and
Texas A and M, and the other conference tournament semifinals.
As I mentioned earlier, I do believe that the win
(01:07:36):
that come from behind walk off wouldn't come from behind.
Speaker 2 (01:07:39):
It was almost lose from ahead. They were up six
to one.
Speaker 1 (01:07:42):
Ole Miss came back to tie it at six, but
Mia Scott's double brought in the.
Speaker 2 (01:07:50):
Game winning run and they won it in walk off fashion.
Speaker 1 (01:07:55):
And probably that walk off victory yesterday has locked in
Texas as a top eight national seed. Mike White, visiting
with US earlier in the week, said he thought that
was going to be the case.
Speaker 2 (01:08:08):
One win might do it, but wasn't for sure.
Speaker 1 (01:08:12):
He said, we could lose and still be a top eight,
but I'd like to be able to remove all that doubt. Well,
a win probably did that yesterday. By the way, Oklahoma
just got a one out homer in the bottom of
the third of Arkansas still up six to two on
the Sooners in that game Texas and Texas. He and
him to follow at five point forty, ty Harrington rejoins me,
(01:08:33):
we've got more to get to when we continue on
thirteen under the zone.
Speaker 16 (01:08:36):
Excess Softball is hea cash. Every pitch I'm.

Ty Harrington with us on this Yeah, and we've talked
about your your musical tastes and your.
Speaker 2 (01:14:50):
Background on this set. Were you Tom Petty fan?
Speaker 4 (01:14:53):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:14:53):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:14:54):
Absolutely? Where do you stand with Tom Jones?
Speaker 4 (01:14:57):
I'm okay.
Speaker 1 (01:14:58):
I went to the concert the other night, did you, Linda?
I went, Yeah, we had a great time. He's he's
he's kind of I'm not gonna say he's read to
find himself, but but but he's he's going to be
eighty five next month, and he can still belt out
of tune.
Speaker 2 (01:15:13):
He's got great vocal quality.
Speaker 1 (01:15:15):
I am as big as you know, a beatlemaniac and
a Paul McCartney fan as anybody. But you can tell
over time Paul's voice is kind of thinned out a bit,
as you would imagine when you get a New Year eighties.
Now with Tom Jones, he can still belt it out.
He did, uh, he did watch New pussy cad and
he did.
Speaker 2 (01:15:32):
He did.
Speaker 1 (01:15:32):
It's not unusual now they it's a little bit different.
They did it in a Boston Nova style because it
didn't have a big brassy horn section type thing. And
as I told Cameron, nobody was up there dancing the
Carlton to it, you know when it.
Speaker 4 (01:15:44):
Was going on.
Speaker 2 (01:15:46):
But he did.
Speaker 1 (01:15:47):
He did songs from Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, uh, Willie Nelson, Uh,
Dusty Springfield and Prince in addition.
Speaker 2 (01:16:00):
To his catalog. A lot is kind of go it.
Speaker 4 (01:16:02):
So it was.
Speaker 2 (01:16:03):
It was a lot of fun. It was that. But
I know you have a great appreciation for.
Speaker 21 (01:16:07):
Usually love any I love it any and all. Yeah,
you know, more of some more than others, like anybody else. Sure, sure,
really good stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:16:14):
Okay, the uh so your thirty thousand foot view since
you were down here more than thirty thousand feet away
from Favle Arkansas. But I think one thing the vibe
I got this week is that long Horn fans were
looking for reassurance that it was, as you mentioned, a
(01:16:37):
bump in the road, or maybe it was a brick
wall that they ran into. A highly motivated Arkansas team
that had lost three consecutive series and playing a rival
he absolutely hated. You only had to be in that
ballpark to get that vibe, and and Gym slaw Snagle
never made excuses for it and said we didn't play
very well. But I got a hint of it that
(01:16:58):
maybe he was saying that a conversation, that maybe maybe
they were already feeling a little bit of the effects
of the flu bug. He thought, he said, a lot
of his guys thought it was maybe like allergy or something.
But whatever it was, pitching, hitting, it all lound up.
When you give them thirty one free bases on twenty
two walks and nine hit batters, it makes it difference.
So when all of a sudden done and you clear
(01:17:18):
that and they come back and they beat a good
Lamar team at home, but didn't get you know, they
had one infield single from Joonah Williams, They had one
blop from Tommy Farmer, and it had a bump base
hit from will Gasprino. Those were the only hits they
It had four runs because of the wildness of Lamar's pitching,
but they had a four to three lead with only
(01:17:39):
those three hits on the board going to the bottom
of the eighth when they busted it open and they
scored five runs on five hits, including homers and a
couple of doubles, and that sort of thing.
Speaker 4 (01:17:48):
I mean, the reassurance part.
Speaker 21 (01:17:50):
I mean, look, it's this league is so challenging, and
look at it's all all of ours first.
Speaker 4 (01:17:58):
Time through this.
Speaker 21 (01:17:58):
Mine included yours, include that, the fans. But you're not
going through this unscathed. You're just more than likely, right,
I don't you know?
Speaker 4 (01:18:09):
So? All right?
Speaker 1 (01:18:10):
So best record of all time was Vanderbilt went twenty
six and three with one rain.
Speaker 2 (01:18:16):
Now in the thirty game catalog.
Speaker 1 (01:18:18):
In the thirty game format in twenty thirteen, Vanderbilt went
twenty six and three. That's the best mark ever. So
even they did not go unscathed on that.
Speaker 21 (01:18:27):
Yeah, And I just I think what everybody probably is
curious is what does it look like this weekend for
Texas and what does it look like getting back to
where they're throwing the ball in the strikes on which
has been really good for them.
Speaker 4 (01:18:41):
Their mo this year on that has been unreal.
Speaker 21 (01:18:44):
I want everybody understand what I'm about to say and
take it the right way, because this one, it's my
opinion of mine that I've seen so far. I think
these guys have played at such a high level. They're
so opportunistic if the other team made a mistake. These
guys have been so good meeting Texas have been so
good it taking advantage of it, and they have won
(01:19:08):
more close games and come out on top. And then
when you go in there and you look at them
going into last weekend hitting two eighty two as a
team somewhere in that area playing against a team hitting
three twenty five, that is a forty point somewhere thirty
whatever the math is on it, right, And then you
(01:19:28):
go in the eras Texas was leading it.
Speaker 4 (01:19:31):
Or lower however you want to say in the era,
but it wasn't.
Speaker 21 (01:19:34):
It wasn't by huge margin like it wasn't, you know, ginormous.
And then you take away and I do think this
is the part I hope everybody hears me on this
is the right way. It's so hard and challenging to
lose your number one picture and your Friday Night got
and it not sometime have an effect on your staff
(01:19:55):
and on your win loss abilities. I just look, and
I'm not saying Texas can't when they can can they
overcome you know, losing, Yes, they surely can. And if
anybody can this bunch of personality, surely can.
Speaker 4 (01:20:07):
I truly believe that part.
Speaker 1 (01:20:09):
But it might have gotten glossed over in some folks
mind simply because Rugario hospits so well against Texas A
and him in the.
Speaker 4 (01:20:15):
First game he did.
Speaker 21 (01:20:15):
But correct me if I'm wrong with this, and you
would know this, but they he went a day short two.
Speaker 4 (01:20:21):
Weeks in a row, right, Okay.
Speaker 21 (01:20:23):
So I know people don't don't know that what that
can mean, but it takes you out of your routine
because he went to you know, three even though it
was a three inning stint. I think that the week
before the A and M game or a series and
then they short resting, not short, he was a day
short rest and then they come at and then it
was a Thursday game too, right last week, and so
(01:20:44):
it was another day and so that can have an
effect on his routine and how he really feels at
this juncture of the season. And so I think that
can have something to do with it. The answer to
you know, why they didn't throw the ball into hit
guys at you know, in ninety six home runs, I
think and end of the series.
Speaker 4 (01:21:00):
I don't know how many they came out with Arkansas
that is, and.
Speaker 21 (01:21:03):
Sometimes that can get that kind of have an effect
on what You're just trying to make so many perfect
pitches over and over and over, and you know, then
you don't, then you get behind, and you had all
those kinds of things might have come into play. I
think everybody's curious house text is gonna come out this
weekend and how well are they going to play? And
everybody has every reason to expect, just like you know
I do and you do. Everybody else is a fan
(01:21:24):
as well that they're gonna come out and play as
hard as they can because they've done it so they
to me, have played at such it was almost they
were due a time when you hate to say this
as it goes down, this is a part I want
everybody the second part of yours a coaching once a way,
you know, there's gonna be a little bit of a
low because they have played so stinking hard and and
(01:21:45):
and every moment has been so huge, like we've you know,
so many big moments, so many different people, and they've
done it without Max Blue and right and they are
now they're having to do this, you know, with Mendoza
not being able to play a position that takes a
bat out of your order that you could put in
there from a DH position, right, and maybe with Bluu
coming back around who knows, hopefully soon. And then it's
(01:22:07):
so to me, they just have done it at such
a high level. I'm not gonna say they would do
a bad weekend, but the possibility of a tough weekend
coming their way was and then they ran up on
a team on paper that is really good.
Speaker 2 (01:22:18):
Yeah, that's it's a good way to describe it, all right.
Speaker 1 (01:22:21):
When we come back, I want to talk also a
little more about the macro the national scene in state
as well.
Speaker 2 (01:22:28):
I want to get to that.
Speaker 1 (01:22:29):
By the way, Arkansas is still up on Oklahoma in
the SEC Softball Tournament semifinals six to two Razorbacks. That
game is going to the bottom of the fourth inning.
South Carolina and Auburn are ten to ten in the
bottom of the ninth right now. Auburn does have the
walk off game winning run in scoring position at second
base with one outs, and they're playing the double header today,
(01:22:54):
so they've they've got another game to go, just like
Texas State is in the second game of a doubleheader
after dropping the opener to Georgia Southern, they're playing the
second one there right now.
Speaker 2 (01:23:01):
We'll get you caught up on.
Speaker 1 (01:23:03):
All of that and more as we continue from UFCU
Dishbar Field here on this Friday afternoon, Texas to take
on Florida, game one of this three game weekend series
six fifteen pregame start time in a six thirty first
pitch and you can hear that on one of three
point one FM. And we'll continue with this program on
thirteen hundred the Zone log. Warren's going through batting practice
(01:23:24):
on the field right there. As a coach, when you're
watching your guys, you see your guys every day, you
see them hit every day, you see them field every day,
all that kind of stuff. What are you looking for
in a batting practice? I mean, are there certain specifics
you just want to see if they're just you know,
following everything they're.
Speaker 21 (01:23:40):
Supposed to follow correctly. I mean, what are you watching there? Focus?
First one's focus? What are you you know? You're here,
this is game day. You're in here, you know well
your practice uniform to get ready for the game.
Speaker 4 (01:23:52):
What does your focus officially start?
Speaker 21 (01:23:54):
To look like if there's a mechanic that you spent
time working with, or and or like we were talking about earlier,
the data part of Okay, i'm swinging, I'm pulling too
many all those whatever that might be. Then I'm looking
at Okay, did he go in there and take what
we told him in our meeting yesterday or our meeting
two days ago, as you mentioned with Toulou whoever that
(01:24:15):
might be on the on the hitting side as well,
and how do they execute that and the BP side
of it. A lot of it is you you said
so many times, you recognize when they're locked in and
when they're and when their minds somewhere different.
Speaker 4 (01:24:30):
I look at it's just part of the deal.
Speaker 21 (01:24:32):
I mean, you see them, you know their personalities, you
know what they're like, their swings, their body language. It'll
tell you how focused that they are. You know, going
into the game doesn't mean they can't get five hits,
doesn't mean they're going to go over five with you know,
five strikeouts if they're focused. But it helps you as
a coach recognize that you know that it is.
Speaker 1 (01:24:48):
I want to ask you about something else. This is
purely hypothetical. For long worn fans, But I know the
questions come up to me, folks. And by the way,
Oklahoma's fighting back against Arkansas and that soft semipon it's
now six to four of that ballgame. In the fourth inning,
Sooners with a home run back within two now at
six' four And arkansas make it a pitching, Chain so
that thing is far from. Done in that first semifinal
(01:25:11):
left the hypotheticals about, how and you've been, there how
a head coach handles his pitching staff going into a
conference tournament followed by a regional and the balance that
you have to. Strike you want to the old rest
Versus russ, thing but if a pitching staff is, tired
(01:25:34):
what you're trying to go through. There i'm just interested
to get your thoughts on. That AND i know you
had to approach it sometimes from a different. Perspective if
you were in that three, seed you had to get that.
Win you're throwing your number one guy first game in a,
regional but even pulling it, back pulling it. Forward so
to speak to the conference, tournament how you set it
up for the, Postseason.
Speaker 21 (01:25:52):
My answer is going to be based on not doing
a handful of things right in my own.
Speaker 4 (01:25:57):
Opinion, right you asked me.
Speaker 21 (01:25:58):
QUESTION i, mean if people are going to ask me,
something be full disclosure with.
Speaker 4 (01:26:01):
PEOPLE a lot of it for.
Speaker 21 (01:26:02):
Me we, we as you, mentioned we had to get
deep into the conference tournament and or win it to
ensure that we were getting to a Regional AND i
made the mistake in two thousand and TEN i think
it was, ten and we we wanted to win the
(01:26:23):
regular season championship and we brought our starter back On, Sunday.
Saturday i'm sorry because if you move up a day
to close out an, inning and which screwed everything. Up
we went to the, tournament lost the First we went
to THE uh and lost the first game to the.
Tournament had to work our way all the way, back
got to the championship, game but and then he wasn't
(01:26:44):
ready for regional.
Speaker 4 (01:26:45):
PLAY i mean he was yeah, no.
Speaker 21 (01:26:49):
No yeah, no but but it was one inning and
then four days five days later he pitched him again
in the tournament and then and then and he was,
exhausted and that was that was.
Speaker 4 (01:26:59):
ALL i, mean it was my fault AND, uh but
it had.
Speaker 21 (01:27:02):
Worked for us similar something similar had worked for us
in two thousand and nine and because we we we
didn't have the ability to wrest too many, people and
we didn't have the foresight because, we LIKE i, said.
Speaker 4 (01:27:16):
We had to get deep in the.
Speaker 21 (01:27:17):
Tournament we had to almost try to win the tournament
to ensure that we were going to get. In like
every game for us in the conference tournament was, like
we're when we're win closer to making sure we're in
that large, team, Right and so we were just stressing our,
staff stressing, them and then we got you, know in twenty,
eleven same. Thing we got down, There we got the championship,
game got, beat didn't get, in got left out because
(01:27:38):
of what you know.
Speaker 4 (01:27:38):
Whatever i'm not evenna into, that but part.
Speaker 21 (01:27:40):
Of it was our staff was exhausted trying to win
every game and we Were that was the one time
we were set up THAT i didn't put my number
one guy back out there in the late the. Tournament
we were set up BECAUSE i thought we were going
to get. In and you, know regional, play they Took
New mexico because it was out in forwards And texas
didn't have a regional didn't have there was only one
(01:28:01):
regional all In texas that, year and So i'm sure
it Became West, coast so you know who's getting in who's.
Not and but that was the first, time the one
TIME i looked forward and said and That number one
wasn't gonna do anything but leave in game five right
early than the championship. Game and it was set up
BECAUSE i thought he'll be ready for.
Speaker 4 (01:28:19):
The first game in the.
Speaker 21 (01:28:19):
Region and now we got a chance to go win
a regional, game and they go win a regional.
Speaker 4 (01:28:25):
Not just you, know and it didn't work. Out so
there's a lot that goes into.
Speaker 21 (01:28:28):
That if you feel, like you, know like if You're
texas and you know that you're dialed in and you
feel like there's not these next six games are going
to dictate some of. That and the next six games
they go four and. Two they're number ONE c in my,
Opinion i'm not.
Speaker 1 (01:28:42):
Only for THE sec. Term you're saying the overall. Runs,
YEAH i think. SO i agree with.
Speaker 2 (01:28:48):
YOU i think.
Speaker 21 (01:28:48):
So and because somebody's going to lose In ARKANSAS lsu
and Then.
Speaker 2 (01:28:53):
Arkansas has to Play.
Speaker 21 (01:28:53):
Tennessee, yeah SO i think there's that's fluid to, me,
Right but so If texas goes forward TO i THINK i.
DO i think the number, one does they, say, okay
what's the worst case scenario of their number?
Speaker 4 (01:29:03):
Two?
Speaker 16 (01:29:04):
Right?
Speaker 21 (01:29:04):
Right, okay so we're splitting hairs. Now but point then
then they've got to. Start in my, mind they start
to decide in the conference, tournament since it's single eliminations
not double, elimination, Right so single, elimination you start to, go,
okay how do we look at?
Speaker 1 (01:29:19):
It and if you're the one seed for folks who
don't know, this for THE sec, tournament of course you
get a double. Bye so the first, day the nine
seed plays the, sixteen the ten plays the, fifteen the
eleven plays the, fourteen and the twelve plays the.
Speaker 2 (01:29:33):
Thirteen that's the first. Day second, day.
Speaker 1 (01:29:36):
The winner of the nine versus sixteen plays the eighth,
seed who gets a single. Buye then the winner of
the ten versus the fifteen plays the seventh, seed who
gets a. Buye the winner of the eleven versus fourteen
plays the sixth, seed and the winner of the twelve
versus the thirteen.
Speaker 2 (01:29:54):
Plays the five.
Speaker 1 (01:29:55):
Seed they get the single buys the winners then of
those games advance to the, quarterfinals just like with, softball
gotta double. Buy and then they were playing the eleven
Seed Old miss who surprised the sixth Seed. Florida but
you do, that, then so the one seed for THE
Sec baseball tournament plays On thursday. Afternoon if they, win
(01:30:16):
you Get friday off and then you would Play saturday
in the.
Speaker 2 (01:30:20):
Semifinals so how might that?
Speaker 4 (01:30:23):
Affect, okay, sorry Let's i'll tell you right. Now let's.
Speaker 21 (01:30:26):
Go let's go back to what we were talking, about
the short. Rest so this Is friday, Night, okay you
play Next thursday right In.
Speaker 4 (01:30:34):
Normandy In, norman so It's thursday. Skip so we're short
a day, already.
Speaker 21 (01:30:37):
Yep, Okay so depending on how far and how those weekend,
goes how far do you go With riojas next? Week
let's say you need to win and then and so
he's going to be on that sixth, day that'll be
the third time in this month and a month period
month frame that he's gonna be possible one day, short,
Right so then you start trying to make those.
Speaker 4 (01:30:59):
Decisions or if.
Speaker 21 (01:31:00):
You have a good, weekend do you you, know put
somebody else Into thursday and then he goes To friday
and then he's probably, well then he.
Speaker 2 (01:31:10):
Done he Pitched friday because you Get friday off if you,
Win so.
Speaker 4 (01:31:14):
Put him back To.
Speaker 21 (01:31:14):
Saturday, okay and correct me If i'm. Wrong the regionals
either start On, friday most of them Are. Friday they're
all On. Friday, okay they're all On. Friday so that
puts him on his seven. DAY i wouldn't be surprised
if that was the case that you go three. Innings
if you get to That friday, game you go three.
Innings he gets his work, in he stays.
Speaker 1 (01:31:35):
Sharp and let's be, honest if they're the number one national,
seed he's probably not pitching that game against the four
seed in the regional.
Speaker 4 (01:31:43):
Here probably probably not if you're number.
Speaker 21 (01:31:46):
One that's a great. Point oh that's a great. Point,
yeah you're probably that's. Right you're gonna get a conference tournament,
winner you. Know, yeah a handful of come, yeah and
and now the only but then, yeah as, long, yeah
as long as he doesn't have like one. Year my
first year At Southwest, texas we Had Blake, williams who
(01:32:07):
was a first, rounder a late first, rounder and we
got you, know we won game one in the regional
Against baylor and they were number one in the. Country
we had a first rounder and he was unreal that
to a, shutout not any. Shutout so, yeah so that
would maybe depend on who that might be as you,
start but you're one hundred percent right. ON i JUST i, think,
(01:32:30):
well one THING i know one hundred percent About Jim,
flaschnegel he probably played out this next three weeks in
his mind so many, times based on so many different,
scenarios that he will be one thousand percent ready for.
Speaker 4 (01:32:48):
It there's no question in, mink.
Speaker 1 (01:32:50):
Whatever situation pops, up he's got a, plane no doubt
in my.
Speaker 21 (01:32:52):
Mind AND i feel that same way About Max weener
and helping him make those choices about who they're gonna.
Speaker 4 (01:32:58):
Throw since we are talking about the side of it, all, right.
Speaker 1 (01:33:01):
Let me let me ask you another part is as
we come out OF, uh come out of THE sec
and out Of, texas from a MOMENT i WANT i
want to get your thoughts on. Something the the The
Southern conference regular season ends this, weekend AND uh the
winner of the conference regular season championship is Ut Rio Grand.
(01:33:25):
Valley it's it's it's a great thing FOR u T R.
Gv for your old Friend derek Matt. Locke that was.
Great they've won The southland regular. Season their conference tournament
is different because the one seed plays the, eight and
the four plays the five and one, bracket and then
the two plays the seven and the three plays the,
six and then what the two winners out of that
(01:33:48):
double elimination bracket advanced to a best of three to
five R.
Speaker 21 (01:33:52):
Yeah it's what it's like right in different, fields, right
that's right, there, Right and then they, have like for
For derek and, image huge advantage because they're averaging like
six thousand fans a night down.
Speaker 4 (01:34:03):
There that place is.
Speaker 21 (01:34:04):
ON i, mean he's done such a unreal job and
it's you, know it's the only game in town and
it's been unbelievable to. Watch so they're. Done so SO
i don't know Like texas. Has everybody else has next
weekend conference so half week done tournament. Tournament but, yeah
so this is the last weekend of regular season for
(01:34:25):
the for The. Southland next weekend they start their tournament
where everybody else starts two weeks from.
Speaker 4 (01:34:29):
Now so that was something they chose to.
Speaker 21 (01:34:32):
Do they went really cut it tight for them to
be able to get fifty three games in most teams
got in fifty, two fifty one fifty two. Games, NO
i don't think anybody got fifty six regular season games
in because you cut yourself out a. Week so it
was a new concept for, them and, uh, Well i'm
anxious to see how it works. Out you, know there
was discussion when you te YOUR gv was here even
(01:34:53):
we're probably With lamar, HERE i wasn't here that, night
that there's two teams in that league that are in
that you, know third high, thirty you, know low forties
r P i wise do they get you, know two
teams in bid wise there was always a challenge in
The southland and.
Speaker 1 (01:35:08):
From the Southeastern louisiana northwestern.
Speaker 2 (01:35:12):
State.
Speaker 1 (01:35:12):
Yeah, uh you know had had thirty had thirty two,
WINS i think going in the going into the.
Speaker 4 (01:35:18):
Week.
Speaker 21 (01:35:18):
Yeah but now it also sometimes when you're in those tournament,
plays you don't gain any r you don't GAIN rpi
points in other, Words i'm not you're playing a team
that's one hundred and even if you beat, them you go,
down you go back the other, way, Right and so
it'll be anxious to see what what just looks like
(01:35:39):
in this formula of how they've done the format with
the new, tournament you, know the two double eliminations here
and then the just two out of, three because, again
if you draw the right, team then in the two
best teams in YOUR rpi.
Speaker 4 (01:35:51):
