Speaker 1 (00:00):
I've been everywhere, Man, I've been everywhere, Man, Boston, deserts Man,
I read the mountain there. Man, we're back. It's The
Craigway Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster and voice of
the Texas Longhearts Craig Way. Winslow Alama Tababanama madaw Bloma
(00:22):
banga blamore avad.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Well, he hasn't quite been everywhere, but he must be
getting pretty darn close. Craig Way, voice of the Longhorns
and the host of this program, on the line with
us here on this Friday afternoon. And Craig, I understand
you've already had to uh to call an audible today
on your way to Mississippi.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Maybe it was from learning hard lessons from the first
trip of the year when we went to Columbus Jake,
and of course folks may remember what happened to that
are we were supposed to go up through Chicago then
connect to flying the Columbus, and the original flight of
Chicago ended up getting canceled. We were and so and
(01:06):
there were no because of all the fans traveling in
there would be no way we could get the Columbus.
We were able to get and by we I mean
Roger Wallis and Will Matthews, my broadcast partners. We were
able to get as far as a hare in Chicago
and then drive seven hours. Well, it was looking like
we might have a similar situation because our flight from
Austin up to DFW and then connecting there to go
(01:28):
to Tupelo. But the flight from Austin the DFW was delayed.
When I first went through security, the flight was scheduled
for two eighteen and it said had been bumped to
two twenty five. I didn't really think much about that
by the time I got through TSAA security and started
to walk back toward the gate. I looked up and
(01:49):
it said three o'clock and I thought that doesn't sound good.
And then I saw there was a flight leaving an
hour earlier, like at one eighteen. So went up to
the gate agent said hey, and I go stand and see. Look.
So yeah, we got we got a seat where so
immediately texted Roger and Will and said, if you guys
are in the terminal, get the gate twenty six and
(02:09):
see if you stand by. Well, Roger was one gate down,
so it was no problem. He got right in, but
the lady told him the gate agent that, well, you
get the last seat. So he texted us that and
will goes that's the last seat, and I said, will
go to the gate. Anyway, there may be a no show.
So he went to the gate and he got the
(02:31):
last seat. And the reason why I know this and
it was a no show is because they put him
up near the front of the plane where a note
back back. But he got on and we're here and
we're on time for the moment, and of course we'll
see all the connecting flight sets up to go to
Tuplo on a commuter airline. And by the way, with
(02:54):
all all due reverence to the late twenty cash, I
haven't been every and that includes two. It'll be thet
I've been through it. I've driven around it or something,
but I've never stayed in it, which is where the
team will be headquartered tonight.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Well, now that you're going to be on the way
to two below shoot, I don't know how much sight
seeing you're going to do with the big World Series
game on tonight. We previewed it in the last segment,
what's your plan to watch Game one?
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Just like I did last Friday night elected from the hotel,
I mean land enough time to where we can get
to the hotel and you know whatever, and maybe i'll
door dash it or something I don't know from the hotel.
That's what I did last week, so I'm I'll plan
(03:44):
on doing it again tonight.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
So Craig, I know obviously that your boards are already laminated,
ready to go, your spotting boards of course, to call
the game. So with all the prep work kind of done,
how do you like to spend a flight on the
way to a long ward football game like this?
Speaker 1 (04:00):
I think it depends on how the week has gone.
This week hasn't been too bad. It's been a little
bit busy, and of course we had the women's basketball
game last night, the exhibition game, so I feel a
little tired, but not too bad. I'll probably extooz a
little bit. But I'm a big reader and I've got
a book in my backpack and I'll read on the plane. Sometimes,
(04:22):
depending on the flight and where you're coming from, I
will watch something like last week when I came back
from Lexington, we had to go through Charlotte and then
I was obviously watching the game from London. I was
watching the Rams and the Jaguars on the flight back,
so I'll do that too. It just depends on what's
(04:42):
going on the degree of fatigue I might be feeling
during the week. Feel pretty very fresh right now, not
too bad, I mean, snooze a little bit on the plane. Also,
it depends on the plane, Jake. You know, if it's
a comfortable jet, it's probably a little bit easier to sleep.
This is going to be one of those pencil thin
(05:03):
puddle jumpers, so you know, we'll see how it behaves
as we go, if we get some turbulents or anything
like that. But that's what the book's for. I can
always read and in those kind of environments.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Pencil thin puddle jumpers. I think that might be the
band playing at the local Starfield bar out there tonight.
I don't know if you have time to go check
them out, but as you get ready for this game
for Texas, right it's the offense, Craig. That's on a
lot of the fans minds. I brought it up with
Cameron earlier. Some of the stats from last week definitely
aren't pretty. If we see some adjustments from Sark this week,
(05:38):
like he's hinted at in his media availabilities, what might
those look like and what kind of keys do you
have for Texas on that side of the ball.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
Well, I definitely want to do a better job of
running a football of the NS secret everybody knows that,
and getting CJ. Baxter in the lineup and back on
the field helps for sure. You know the old thing
about run to set up the pass, and Sark has
been pretty plain spoken about. He said they can't just
wind up and just start letting it rip, you know,
(06:07):
and just throwing it all over the field. The teams
won't respect to run that way, and it'll be even
more difficult for arch Manning to do the things that
he needs to move the team forward. So run the ball,
and they've got to get better. If they're able to
do that, then then I think it doesn't set up
the pass game and make it that much more dangerous.
(06:30):
So I think there's going to be much more of
a concerted effort to run the ball and to be
more physical upfront with the offensive line as well as
what they do with the defensive in trying to contain
Mississippi State's game, which is also to run the football,
even though they'll spread the field out and use some
wider offensive splits and throw out of that. But their
(06:52):
design is still to run first and pass second.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yeah, and back to that note on the running game
with CJ. Baxter likely to be back into the fold
in some sort of capacity this week. Might he open
up things in the passing game with his receiving skills.
He had five catches in that season opener at Ohio State.
Speaker 1 (07:12):
Yeah, he can catch the ball on the back field.
Of course. You know what they really missing and what
they have been missing by not having CJ. Is that
really good running between the tackles, you know, Quin Travian
Weisner can do it. Trey does run between the tackles sometimes,
but he is really good in the passing game and
flexing him out of the backfield. So yeah, they could
(07:33):
use that there. I think they want to have a
concerted effort to run the ball better between the tackles
with Baxter and then open it up the screen game,
either to Baxter or the Wisner as those two guys
will alternate and there will be some I think we'll
see some formations where they're both out there instead of
a two tight end set. We may only see you
may see twelve personnel or excuse me, twenty one personnel
(07:55):
with just two backs and one tight end. So I
think there's a decent chance we may see some of
that as well.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
Now you mentioned Mississippi State's offensive approaches. They want to
establish the run to set up the pass, but they're
not afraid to spread you out and take some vertical
shots either. And for a Texas defense, that's down Michael Taff.
How big of a concern is that against a true
spread system like this?
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Well, and this offense, as Sark has described, really and
truly is almost the pure derivative of the Art Briles
offensive concept, which is to have big, wide splits along
the offensive front. You spread your receivers out, you have
the screen game, you have the slant game, but you
run the football. It's a power spread. It truly is
(08:44):
a power spread. And I think that's what Mississippi State
likes to do. And the reason why I say the
Art Briles offense obviously the guy who's the head coach
of Mississippi State is Art sun Law, Jeff Levy and
Jeff so West Texas kid. I knew his dad when
his dad was coaching it Andrew's high Way out in
West Texas back in the day and they were more
(09:05):
committed to running the football. And Jeff himself as a
former offensive lineman, he was a he was a good
offensive lineman in Oklahoma until he had a knee injury.
So you know, they they want to run to definitely
set up the pass, but they can spread out and
if you do try to clog the gaps too much,
they hit you with clinton quick slants and in the
slant and quick game and that's where they can dash
(09:26):
you a defense. And to your part about not having
Michael Tapp, it's true. He's he'll travel with the team
and they'll be there because he is a source of guidance, leadership,
and inspiration. Fortunately, the guys who are having a step
in and play more snaps are guys who were veterans
who played a lot of snaps. Derek Williams was a
starter at safety last year until a knee injury. And
Vanderbilt and they you know, they had they have several
(09:49):
other guys that they can roll in and rotate out
as safeties and it's a chance for Julini McDonald really
to step up his game in the secondary. Grayson Littleton,
the fre Jordan Johnson Rebell JJR as they call them.
They've got several different guys that they can plug into
that safety slash star position. Whether they're talking about the
(10:10):
safety or the starback. They've got bodies. It's just, you know,
Tasts leadership on the field is something that'll be missed,
but he'll be with them in the leadership in the
in the in the locker room, and at the team
hotel and around the group. That part will still be there.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
The second straight week, Craig that Texas faces an opponent
looking for its first SEC victory. But you know, you
look a little closer at this Mississippi State schedule. You
had the overtime loss to Tennessee they led in the
fourth quarter, then a game at Kyle Field that was
close until their defense got hung out to dry late,
and then the Florida game where they're perhaps one late
(10:47):
interception away from victory. Am I right in saying what
I think a lot of Texas fans are thinking that
Mississippi State's much much better than that zero to three
sec mark.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
Yeah, I think there are a couple of plays away
from being six and one and being two in one
in the SEC instead of being going three. I think
there's just a couple of snaps away from that, but
the mistakes had hurt them. You're right about the Texas
A and M game. That's a ninety seven game in
the third quarter before the Aggies just started to wear
them out after that. But the Tennessee game was an
(11:19):
overtime game. They had an opportunity and that was at home,
and then of course at Florida they had a chance
to win, but for the late interception. Now, the one
thing we know is Jeff Levy said it in his
news conference this week. Yeah, the interception is what everybody
remembers clearly because that was the final straw. But he
looked back to three earlier possessions where they had the
ball in Florida territory and came away with nothing and
(11:42):
then a field goal and then nothing. I think, and
he said, and those are the ones that you look
back on after the game and think, boy, if we
could have just done something different there, we could have won.
I think Texas looks at it similarly with some of
the games they've had about possessions where had they done
A then B, you know, the result is a little
bit different. So you're right, they're better than what four
(12:02):
and three would be they own a win over Arizona State,
who just of course knocked off Texas Tech. So yeah,
this is a tough team to play and going into
another difficult road environment. And of course this is the
end of the traveling month of October where every game
has been played away from DKR Texas Memorial Stadium. Yeah,
(12:23):
I know.
Speaker 2 (12:23):
Coach Sark was asked if he's had a stretch in
his career like this, playing this many games in a
row away from home. He compared it to a three
game stretch he had with the Atlanta Falcons back when
he was serving as their OC What about you, Craig,
as a broadcaster, have you had a stretch like this?
Speaker 1 (12:39):
No, not four in a row. They have been free,
including the Texas OU game a couple of times, but
it's the first time for an entire months I think
that I can remember in the thirty eight years have
been on the network, the thirty four years in the
broadcast booth, that every single game for an entire month
(13:03):
was away from home. I understand the mass and the
way the guidance works on the scheduling there. Because Texas
was the designated home team against Oklahoma, so technically it
counts as a home game, but we all know that.
Obviously they play Dallas on the air grounds and it's
a completely different environment with the stadium split in half,
(13:23):
so it's not a home game. It's a half and
half game. But they were the designated home team, that's
why it's set up like that. But this is indeed
a first time for four consecutive weeks to be on
the road.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
Well, Craig, I know you're currently at an airport and
before they call your boarding group, I've got one more
question for you. We've talked a lot about the cow
bells this week. I of course have reminded our listeners
they can submit their cow bell contest songs via the
talkback feature. And with all this talk about Texas being
prepared for the cow bells, as a broadcaster.
Speaker 1 (13:55):
Do you have to think about that? Are you prepared
for the cow bells? Well, I'm talking and Neil Price,
and of course we had him on the show this week,
but in visit m'neil he said, it's you know, it's
omni president. Obviously you hear it, but it's not it's
not so obtrusive that you can't do your job. You
know and and uh, that's that's the thing is does
it get in the way of performing the duties that
(14:18):
that you're you know, assigned to perform, and that's calling
the play? And he said, it's not that oppressive in
terms of drafting you out, so you can't even hear yourself.
Plus we have an outstanding engineer in Greg Clinton Smith
who can fil throughout different themes and you know, stuff
like that. So I think I think it'll be all right.
I'm looking forward to the environment. Sark says it's a
(14:39):
great environment. He was there with Alabama when he was
on Nick State Saban staff. Uh. He says, it's one
of those fun environments on the road in college football,
and he wants his team to embrace the moment as well.
So who am I to.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Argue, well, Craig, well we'll hear that conversation you had
with start coming up. But I want to let you
get in line, grab your snacks and get comfortable on
what'd you call it, that pencil fit puddle hopper of
a plane and you're about to board.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
That's it. It's a thirty seat regional Chit is what
it is. But the nice thing about it is it'll
fly right in the two flow where the team hotel is,
which is about an hour north of Stargill. We ran
into our good friends Kirk Bowles, Cedric Golden, and Danny Davis.
Kirk of course now with the Houston Chronicles, said, and
(15:26):
Danny with the Austin American States, and they were on
the same flight with us from Austin up to the
DFW the air flying to Jackson, and so they were
on a different connecting flight going to Jackson. Then they
have about a two and a half hour drive after that,
so at least we're close once we land, you know,
and swing by see Elvis's birthplace and then get the
hotel watchball game tonight.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
How about that. Hopefully no heartbreak at the hotel later on. Craig,
appreciate you joining us. Have a safe flight. Tell the
rest of the crew, I said, travel safely and hello.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
Thanks for stepping in today, Jake, appreciate it. And by
the way, we will announce that winner of that cow
Bell contest all Monday, and we were back through and
choose the winner of the weekend, and we will announce
that winner on Monday afternoons show where we award the
two tickets to next Saturday, Texas Vanderbilt Kame and Craig.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
Your show starts with the pregame at two. Of course,
our show on thirteen hundred Zone starts earlier than that,
with Third and Longhorn at eleven, Longhorn Game Day at noon.
Travel Save Craig, Thank you, Jake all Right, appreciate Craig
Way taking the time out of his travel schedule to
join us. Up next, we'll hear his conversation with Coach
(16:33):
Sark from Longhorn Weekly last night right here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone
