Glad to have you with us here on The Creig

(00:21):
joins me at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta,
Georgia for the SEC Media Days. We'll be out there
alongside Mike Harge. We'll be broadcasting live as well Monday
through Wednesday, and we are pumped for that and pump
for today's show. So glad to have you with us
here on today's program. Of course, you can listen on
(00:42):

You can go ahead and add thirteen hundred the Zone

show on the match if you missed the segment, you
missed an interview, want to go back and re listen
to something using that preset option is a great way
to listen to our podcast on demand, and best of all,
it is free.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
So glad to have you with us.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Of course, I'll be in in and out throughout this week,
going to rotate with Andrew Zimmel our six Men who
will be in tomorrow and Thursday show. I'll be hosting today,
Wednesday and Friday, and then Friday actually Zimmo will join
me for his music survey. I did not do it
this last week with the July fourth holiday. He will
be doing it with me on Friday and we continue
(01:30):
that music survey series. Craig will be back next week actually,
so I'm sure on Friday he has somebody locked in
as well to go ahead and do that. So looking
forward to that, looking forward the Quig returning in, looking
forward to today's program, of course. You know, I'd like
to begin my thoughts and prayers to those who have
(01:50):
been affected by the Central Texas flooding. Twelve have lost
their life in the Austin area, seven his County, two
in Williamson, and then three in Burnett County. Sixteen people
are still missing. Of course, you know, we've seen the
videos of the San Gabriel up in Georgetown that has
you know, caused quite a bit of flooding, and of
(02:13):
course what has happened in central Texas, especially in Kirk County,
where the Associated Press has reported that at least eighty
people have lost their lives in the flash floods over
the weekend. Eighty two people over this past holiday, with
many still missing, including girls attending summer camp in Kerrville.
A lot of devastation along the Guadalupe River just outside
(02:35):
of San Antonio. A massive search effort is underway, and
the floodscrew to the worst at the midpoint of this
long holiday weekend, when many people were asleep. A lot
of this hit early Friday morning, about four five am
is when it really hit Kerk County in the Texas
whole country, the central part of the state that has
(02:56):
naturally just prone to flash flooding due to the soil level.
It's more it's let's rain skid by and let's instead
of soaking it up. And on Friday morning, you know,
that first bad storm dropped about twelve inches of rain
in the dark early mornings of the hour. There was
a floodwatch midday Thursday issued by the National Weather Service
(03:19):
Office issued one again at about four am. By by
about five twenty am in the Curville City area, see
water levels were getting alarmingly high in the massive rain
flowing down the Guadalupe River caused it to ride, caused
it to rise twenty six feet in just forty five minutes.
Texas Governor Greg Abbot said on Sunday that there were
(03:40):
forty one people confirmed to be unaccounted for across the
state and more could be missing. And of course we
know about the many youth camps in Kirk County in
the Texas Hill Country, where searchers have found at least
sixty eight people, including sadly twenty eight children, that were
reported Sunday afternoon. Currently, fatalities in nearby counties brought up
(04:02):
the seventy nine of the Sunday evening that has been
updated to eighty two as of today. Per the Associated Press,
ten girls and a camp counselor are still unaccounted for
at Camp Mystic, the Christian summer camp along the river.
Just a very very sad turn of events this past weekend.
Kerville City Manager Dalton Rice said on Saturday that they
(04:22):
don't even want to begin to estimate the time the
number of total unaccounted people for across the campgrounds. That
number has not been released yet. Fairy officials have referred
to this as a one hundred year flood, meaning the
water levels were highly unlikely based on the historical record
over this past weekend. So we'll continue to update all
(04:45):
of that throughout the week. And of course iHeart would
like to help you guys in those who do want
to help, as of course, these floods have impacted countless residents.
You know, many people have lost their homes, communities and
lives have been shattered. Of course, children are still seeing
so there is a lot of urgent need right now.
So the Community Foundation of the Texas while Country has
(05:06):
launched the Kerr County Flutterly Fund to support response, relief,
and long term recovery efforts. All donations will go directly
to trust to organizations to provide food, shelter, and healthcare
and hope. So if you're interested in joining the Kerr
County Flood Relief Fund, you can do so at Community
Foundation dot net. So those funds are being directed to
(05:27):
organizations involved in rescue, relief and recovery efforts, Flood Assistant
programs for this placed family and individuals and rebuilding efforts
in the hardest hit areas along the Guadalupe River. So
this has just been a terrible event against thoughts and
prayers with the families who have undergone through this.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
I know, the flooding just even up in round Rock.
We had our entire driveway washed away.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
Construction you know currently up in round Rock and we
had our driveway being worked on a lot of interest
in Exodus alongside of the roads and round Rock just
wiped away this awful flooding Lano Marble Falls. I knew
I had a lot of friends in family that could
not get out of their houses over this past week,
and that were you know, we're trapped insider, We're being
told that their house was flooding. I had to go
(06:15):
back home and you know estimate the damage. So very
tough weekend. So please keep your thoughts in prayers in
mind for all of those And of course there's a
lot more information on our social media pages as well
for those who do want to be able to help.
Just check us out thirteen hundred the Zone dot com
for more information as well, and we will continue to
update that throughout today's show and also throughout the morning
(06:37):
kickoff show as well and across across our Fox Sports
family here in Austin, Texas. So we'll continue to do
that throughout today's program. A sneak peek of what's to
come here on today's show, Eric Henry from Horns two
four seven and two four seven sports dot Com, we'll
stop buy in the four o'clock hour. He had a
(07:00):
couple of articles that he posted. He's been doing a
series online and believe he's been calling it the expanded
Production series. And one player of note on the defensive
side is someone that I think could end up being
a utility night for Steve Sarkisian in PK's defense. He
also listed the confidence level in each Texas Football positional group.
(07:25):
I think CJ. Fogo from on Texas Football did this
with me like two weeks ago. We talked about it,
and Eric Henry went ahead and posted an article as well,
similar but different rankings as well. You know, your number
four from Eric surprised me a little bit. His number
seven through ten may surprise you. So we'll talk about
that in fact later on here in today's program. With
(07:47):
that as well, of course, we will have inconceivable for
you a record breaking NBA trade. We'll talk about that
in the Inconceivable edition here on Monday, we'll get to
some more Texas football recruiting notes. If you guys calm
down after the Felix Ojo commitment to Texas Tech, well
I'll tell you why that perceived loss maybe a win
(08:12):
for Texas football Today's show, and we're I'm gonna use
some sound from Steve Sarkisian to explain why going forward
and why you should not go ahead and be upset
with Felix Ojo. He's just a young man living his life.
So we'll talk about that as well. Some upcoming commitments
that could be in favor of Texas here as a
month of July will be very busy on the recruiting front.
(08:34):
Of course, the past couple of weekends have been huge,
but some big names will be committing throughout this month.
It's be a closer and closer to kickoff. And some
NBA notes as well. There was another three team trade
that caught my eye for a reason that you may
not expect, So looking forward to that here on today's program.
Just getting started. On the Monday edition here of the
(08:56):
Craig Way Show, we will be giving away free tickets
throughout today's program. And also big news coming out of
Norman as Joe constick Leone has retired from his full
time role as the Schools at leg director in Oklahoma
will be searching for a new ad throughout the season.
(09:17):
This will end the longest tenured run for a current
ad in major college sports. Of course, pastick Leone and
Crystal Conte, you know, work together to bring Texas and
Oklahoma from the Big Twelve to the SEC. It's a
big move. We've seen what Oklahoma has been able to
do in the last you know, twenty six, twenty eight
years under costick Leone. Football powerhouse in the early two
(09:40):
thousands dominated the Big Twelve from Bob Stoops to Lincoln Riley.
Of course, softball program has had so much success, but
last couple of years have been a little bit tougher
in their bigger sports. Obviously softball with so much success,
and although Texas did win this past season, you know,
Oklahoma won what like forty in a row it felt like,
but football has been struggling since Lincoln Riley's departure from
(10:04):
Norman to Southern California. And of course men's basketball under
Portomoser you know, missed the tournament for a couple of
years in a row. There a return this last season.
The two major revenue driving sports for Oklahoma have been
struggling the last couple of years, so curious maybe if
Pat made an impact. But on the business side, costickli
One was in a fantastic job at Oklahoma and of
(10:26):
course what him in Texas and CDC have been able
to accomplish together bringing those two schools out of the
Big Twelfth to the SEC has been huge. As of course,
you know, college sports has completely changed in the last
twenty eight years from when he accepted the job in
Norman and plus constically owned has you know, worked on
the college football playoff committee, baseball, men's basketball. So twenty
(10:48):
eight years of Oklahoma in this reportedly will be his
last according to ESPN. So we'll spend more time talking
about this story throughout today's program. We are just getting
started here. But up next, Cam Newton defending Arch Manning.
You got to hear with the former Heisman winning trophy
quarterback had to say about arch Manning. It might surprise you.
(11:10):
Up next on The Creigway Show's.
Speaker 2 (11:29):
Getting started here.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
On a Monday edition of the Craig Ways Show, Cameron
Parker with you, glad do you have you here on
today's program as we're just getting started here as the
sun starting the poll out just a little bit, hopefully
it'll stay a little bit dry after all the rain
we have had this past weekend here in the central
(11:50):
Texas area. Okay, Cam Newton, first thought that comes to mind,
go for me now some of you saying, you know, stealing.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Laptops and throwing them out the apartment dorm window.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
Always think about Cam not jumping on the fumble in
Super Bowl fifty Panthers Broncos. Some may think, of course,
of his Superman celebration or just his ability as a
college quarterback. You know, a lot of people will put
him as one of the most impressive college athletes of
(12:26):
all time. And I agree. Anytime you watch highlights of
Auburn in Cam's year, it's like a man amongst boys, right.
I mean, he just took out with his six foot five,
six foot six frame so much bigger, quicker, faster, stronger
than a lot of guys on the football field, and
(12:46):
of course led Auburn to national championship victory over Oregon. Well,
Kim Newton on his show Fourth and One with Cam Newton,
which is fun just to watch just to see what
Newton is wearing. I mean, I would love to see
what his closet looks like. It's got to compare the PJ.
Tucker's shoe closet and in terms of all the stuff
(13:10):
he has in there. But Cam Newton spoke out about
Arch Manning and Arch's decisions to the stay at Texas
instead of transferring in Well, his answer may surprise you.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
They went into the University of Texas with the understanding
that they're trying to put Arch Manning in the best situation.
Speaker 4 (13:28):
To be developed over time. It's not about.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
Playing that's going to come, but who's going to develop
this specific talent to be the best talent by the
time he's eligible to go to the next level. A
lot of these parents and a lot of these players
get so jaded off of the fact that hey.
Speaker 4 (13:44):
I'm trying to play early.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
No no no, no, no no, no, no, scratch that
go somewhere that after three years you could put yourself
in a position to go to the league. That doesn't
mean that I'm going somewhere where I could play early
or start just because.
Speaker 4 (13:59):
You're starting doesn't mean you're getting developed.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
I've always felt like I was more talented than Tim Tebow,
but I needed Tim Tebow to show me what I lacked.
Speaker 4 (14:07):
Ten Tbow is an unbelievable leader, verbally and by actions.
Speaker 3 (14:12):
Arch would be a fool if he has not learned
anything from Quinn Ewers, how he prepared, how he lead
his team, and just how he handled and managed the
expectations for being a quarterback at a university like Texas,
the synonym for Heisman is hype. The player who has
the most hype typically wins the Heisman. I don't think
another quarterback has had this much hype at the University
(14:35):
of Texas since the great Vince Young. You are a
freaking fool if you don't think Cooper Manning, Archie Manning,
Eli Manning, and Peyton Manning has any type of involvement
with the decision making of their nephew, their grandson, or
their son. Because with a name like Manning, it holds
a lot of weight in this football world.
Speaker 1 (14:55):
Did you have Kim Newton defending Arch Manning on your
bingo card this year? I did not, but I think
most Texas fans will agree with what Cam Newton had
to say there. I thought it was really interesting his
point about how he needed to learn from Tim Teble
even though he thought he was more talented than Tim Tebole.
And of course we know how it turned out with
(15:16):
Cam Newton at Florida, you know, before getting kicked off
a football team. If Urban Meyer kicks you off a
football team, man, that says a lot. But of course
Cam did you know, return after spending some time on
the JUCO level and got to Auburn and the rest
is history. Number one overall draft pick, Heisman winner, MVP
in the NFL level. But I found it very interesting,
(15:39):
you know, Cam talking about Arch, And of course last
week throughout the show, you know, we shared whether it
was Arch's interviews at the Cooper Manning Passing Academy or
the Manning Passing Academy at the Cooper Manning Manning Passing Academy,
and then Bruce Feldman's piece in The Athletic, you know,
talking about Arch's upbringing, the way he was raised. And
we all know that if Arch wanted to go to
(16:04):
a school where he was gonna get paid the most
amount of money or start from day one, it would
not have been the University of Texas, and it was
always surprising, you know, when you know he tweeted out
his commitment to Texas is like, yeah, he won't be
there in the year. Yeah, it's Queen Yours coming. He
won't be there in two years. That that was That's
(16:25):
never been in the in the plans for Arch Manning
and the way this family is operated. I mean, Eli
played five years at Ole, Miss Peyton played four.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
You know, they want Arch to get.
Speaker 1 (16:38):
His full development because they want him to have a
great NFL career. And we see the you know, the
juxtaposition with Arch in a commitment like Felix Ojo and
nothing against Felix Ojo. I do not know him personally,
do not know his family. But it's it's two it's
it's two different things, right, And I think it's we
(16:59):
get confused because we have guys like Arch Manning who
are willing to sit out in you know decline, you
know early playing in decline, you know, a fat pay
check in order to develop. And then we have other
players who don't do that and we wonder why and
we want to curse them. Well we shouldn't, because you know,
we don't know the upbringing we don't know the financial
(17:20):
you know the factors. For Felix, Hey, we do know
the arch manning will make enough off of nil that
he'll be fine for a long time.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
You know, his family is okay.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
But for other athletes who come in and now the
opportunity to play football for a career path, and you
get offered, like Fluksojo, five million dollars over three years, guaranteed, guaranteed,
you are going to take that. You are going to
any eighteen year old in their right mind is going
to take that. Now, if your goal is, hey, I
(17:51):
want to be a NFL Hall of Fame quarterback. I
want to be drafted and be in the right place,
you know, maturity wise, developmental wise, learn from the best
coaches and play around the right players and compete for
national championship. That's a different decision than what some kids
are coming out and making. They are playing football not
(18:14):
because they want to be in Canton or being Mount
Rushmore or be All Pro, or win Super Bowls or
win national championships. They are playing football because it's their career.
They want to be able to make money to provide
for their family. So for guys like Felix, and other
players who are offered this amount of money. It does
(18:34):
make sense, just like it makes sense for arch Manning
to decide to go to Texas and set out two years.
Both things are similar but not the same, and it's okay.
What Felix Ojo decided to do is okay. What arch
Manning side to do is okay. It's two different decision
making processes and hopefully it works out for both guys.
You know, for Felix Ojo, I know it's Texas Tech,
(18:56):
and you know, we you know, in Austin not a
big fan of those out in Luvebock in terms of
you know, college football, but hey, you get off for
five million dollars over three million over three years, and
it's guaranteed.
Speaker 2 (19:10):
It's hard to turn that down. And you know, if
you have the.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
Talent, if you have the ability, you can go out
and hey, Darren Steel, you know, starting right tack for
the Dallas Cowboys, what the tech he was undrafted? It
worked out for him. The way he got there was
a little bit different than say it might be for Felix.
If you decided to come to an Ohio State or
Texas and you develop and you get a first round
draft pick. He Felix may end up being a first
(19:33):
round draft pick anyway, you know, get his five million
dollars and it'll work out and he'll have a great
NFL career.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
Maybe it doesn't.
Speaker 1 (19:39):
But for arch Manny and his family and from Cam
Newton's point, you know, they realized, hey, the best thing,
especially for a quarterback, because there's so much between the
ears in that part of the game and that position.
It makes so much sense for him to come in
and take a couple of years and sit back and
learn and develop because I you know, if Archs had
(20:01):
come in and started immediately for Texas, you know how
would have played out, right, He probably would not have
been ready. You know, we've seen some great moments and
we have seen some moments that have not been so great. Right,
you would think back to his game against Georgia. No
No one played good that game offensively for Texas. So
you know, he gets his two years and now he's
(20:23):
ready hopefully for Ohio State Week one. But to Kim
Newton's point, he needed that time at Florida under Tim
Tebolt to learn some things. And you know, I think
you would ask him, he would tell you he probably
made some bad decisions that led him to being kicked
off the football team. But by the time, you know,
he got his second chance, took advantage of it. He
won a Heisman Trophy, he won a national champions have
(20:44):
been for Arch Manning. Fortunately, you know, he's had his
two years to learn learn behind Quinn yours, and I
think what we have seen under Quinn we obviously the
arch hype is a little bit different, but the Quinn
hype was there.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
He was the number one rated quarterback.
Speaker 1 (20:59):
Prospect to commit the Texas Ever commits ends up going
to Ohio State. He comes back to Texas under Steve
starkejian It Starks. Second year, Alabama's coming to town week two,
there was a lot of hype for Quinn yours. There
was a lot of hype, and unfortunately for Quinn, I
(21:20):
don't know if he ever lived up to his hype
based on maybe just unrealistic expectations.
Speaker 2 (21:26):
And I'm curious about.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
With Arts Manning because what will it take for Texas
fans for Arts to live up to their expectations for him?
Right It's a Heisman trophy because I think for a
lot of Texas fans it was a Heisman Trophy, first
round draft pick, and national championship. And for Quinn, he
didn't win a Heisman, but what he did do was
(21:49):
he beat Oklahoma twice. He took Texas the Colashtball Playoff twice,
the semi final twice, and you know, we're a couple
of plays away from possibly being in the national championship
and who knows. Of course, you know, you can't go
back and change history. But I think if you took
away Quinn being you know, that number one prospect, five star,
(22:10):
I think a lot of Texas fans would have been
very content with Quinn, you were's career. And so I'm
curious what will it take for arch Manu to do that?
And I think arch is gonna have a fantastic career
at Texas in terms of Heisman's and national championships.
Speaker 2 (22:23):
We don't know.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
The season now is what eighteen weeks long? Nineteen weeks long,
a little bit longer than that, actually, probably a little
bit longer that. And when you throw in you know,
fall camp and the time off in between, you know,
the end of the regular season, in the beginning of
the playoffs, it's a long season. Injuries happened, you know,
Texas two fumbles away against Washington from possibly winning that game.
(22:46):
Ohio State, you know you're down the one yard line.
A lot could have changed in that game, and who
knows what the last two years to look like. But uh,
for Arch in his family, it's it's obvious, and it's
it's obvious that his family has treated his development so
much different than anybody else. In back to Philip, Sojoe
(23:09):
and I understand why Texas fans are upset, and there's
some things there that you know, we I've right on
inside Texas or Horns two for seven or on Texas
football in terms of what his family had told the
Texas coaching staff in the Ohio State coaching staff that
it's between them two and he ends up going to
Texas Tech a little bit different. You know, you want
to keep your word, you don't. The worst thing you
(23:31):
could do in that situation is a lie. And from
what I from what I can just guess is that
Texas Tech gave him the offer a five million dollars
for three years and said we'll give you this guaranteed,
but you have to sign now, and you can't tell
Texas or House State because we do not want them
to be able to maybe match that offer or up
(23:54):
their offer. It's either you take this or you don't.
And I'm assuming assuming, and that's a big word here
that Ojo was all right, we'll do this, we'll do
this contract, and we won't announce it until you know, Friday.
And of course, you know, there was reports coming out
from you know, Rivals and on three, you know, changing
their RPMs and crystal balls from Texas to Texas Tech,
(24:18):
even though the family was allegedly telling the coaching staffs
at Texas and wyl State that it's still between them two.
And I believe the frame or the wording that Steve
Sarkesian his staff told the Ojo family was, Hey, either
you commit to us today and if you don't, that's it.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
We're done with this recruitment. The recruitment ends on Friday.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
And you might be wondering what he's a he's a
five star prospect, why why would you go ahead.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
And turn him down?
Speaker 1 (24:48):
Well, here's the quote from from Steve Sarkisian the Third
and Longhorn podcast, and I played it about week or
two ago, and he talked about, you know why kids
want to play here at Texas and I'm going to
play it again for you. And there's a couple of
points in here that Sark makes that makes me believe.
It makes me think that, you know what, this looseness
(25:09):
recruitment is really not a big.
Speaker 2 (25:10):
Deal at all.
Speaker 5 (25:11):
Like, I honestly think this is the best place in
the country to come play football at. I firmly believe that,
And I think we have the stats, the nuances, the
information to back that up. Okay, and I'm gonna start
with football, then I'm gonna I'm.
Speaker 6 (25:26):
Gonna sweep it if I know nothing.
Speaker 5 (25:28):
Who's the one school that's gone to back to back
college football Playoffs, back to back semi finals Orange. Who's
the one school their first.
Speaker 6 (25:34):
Year in the SEC went to the SEC Championship Game.
Speaker 5 (25:37):
Who has the most draft picks in the NFL Draft
the last two years?
Speaker 1 (25:41):
Six?
Speaker 5 (25:42):
Who's had six d linemen drafted in the last three years?
Five running backs drafted in the last in the last
three years. Who's had a receiver taken in the first
round the last two years? Who has the last year
signed the number one class in the country. The year
before that a top three class in the country, the
year before that, a top five recruiting class in the country.
All the while that's occurring at a top five public
(26:04):
institution in the United States, all the while being part
of an athletic department that's won four to the five
of the last Athletic Director's Cups. So when you talk
about like minded individuals pushing each other the new heights
and whether it's track and field national championships, rowing, golf, softball, volleyball,
(26:24):
women's basketball final four, okay, but all the while you're
doing it in the city of Austin, which, oh, by
the way, is the largest city in the US with
no pro sports, So no NFL, no Major League Baseball,
no NBA, So who are getting those nil deals? Who
is the pro sports team?
Speaker 6 (26:43):
Right?
Speaker 5 (26:43):
It's the fastest growing economy in the US, Austin, Texas.
So when you start thinking about it big picture and
just get out of how much does the contract say,
and you start thinking about long term and where's my
life gonna go? All right, it gonna look like when
they can get there, well, maybe we get a guy
(27:05):
for a little bit less than another school's offerer. Especially
in this day and age, that's got to happen because
every power for school's got at minimum that same amount
of money. Okay, And so if we're trying to assemble
a group of talented people, well, every talented people are
going to require some money. Well, if I don't have
(27:26):
as many talented people, I'm gonna have more money to
offer Johnny.
Speaker 6 (27:30):
Well, Johnny has to see.
Speaker 5 (27:31):
The force through the trees a little bit and say,
you know, this is short term money.
Speaker 6 (27:36):
I want to look at more of the long term money.
Speaker 5 (27:38):
And Texas is going to provide me an opportunity to
create more opportunities, whether it's on the field, off the field,
degree nil, brand building, player development, opportunity in the NFL.
Speaker 6 (27:51):
What does that look like for me?
Speaker 5 (27:52):
I've got a lot more lanes right to go achieve
that than just this spot over here that's got one avenue.
We've got a lot of avenues to go come here
and be really successful.
Speaker 6 (28:02):
So there's a lot to it.
Speaker 5 (28:04):
But like I said, I think we have the best
product in the US. I don't think there's another school
that can say that. And oh, by the way, Forbes
magazine last year wrote the new IVY.
Speaker 4 (28:15):
League, Who so, who name.
Speaker 5 (28:19):
Another school who's getting compared to Harvard, Yale and Princeton.
But on the state on the flip side, is getting
compared to Georgia, Ohiose State and Alabama on the football field.
Speaker 2 (28:29):
Yeah, we're just gonna so you see that.
Speaker 1 (28:30):
You know, maybe Johnny in this example is Felix Ojo that, Hey,
we're gonna offering a little bit more, a little bit
less money, but here's all the opportunities that could be
in front of you. In Texas, tex said, hey, here's
five million opportunities. You know again, it's okay, eighteen year
old kid, five million dollars. If you want to go
ahead and take that, that's fine, there's nothing wrong with that.
But the player is that, you know, Steve Starkegan in
(28:53):
Texas looking at they're in a position where if you
missed out on a five star guy because he just
wants to make more money. I think they're okay because
this program is in great shape based off the culture
that Sarcus belt for Texas Tech in football. Are they
knocking on the door of clash football playoffs?
Speaker 2 (29:12):
I don't know. I don't think so.
Speaker 1 (29:14):
But hey, they go out and sign all these five
star guys and him in the portal, you know, maybe
they believe they can't they can go ahead and get
to that by going out and offering these godfather grandfather
type deals. But for Texas, they're in a good spot where, hey,
you're gonna miss out on some five star guys, it's
(29:34):
going to happen. It's Ojo will not be the last
guy they missed out because they get offered more money.
But Texas is in a spot right now with their
culture that they can miss out on guys and still
go out and grab four stars that they can develop
or grab guys for the portal. So it'll work out
for Texas Football. We'll work out for Felixsojo. Who knows,
(29:55):
but hey, he's got five million dollars guaranteed. Up next,
we got Incan seabol here on Monday's edition of The
Greig Way Show. The second hour of today's program Here
on The Craigway Show, Undroway, Cameron Parker Way too glad

podcast on the free iHeart Radio app. Talked a little
arch Manning as we're going to be doing a lot
for the next couple of years. Cam Newton actually had
some very interesting comments. Did not expect to talk about
Cam Newton talking about Tim Tebow talking about arch Manning
on today's show, But Cam with some good insight on
(31:24):
his podcast, his show Believe Fourth and one with Cam Newton?
Speaker 2 (31:31):
What place? What's the fourth and one? Play? Is that Auburn?
The fourth and one play. Is that that name it
for something? Or is that Carolina? Not sure?
Speaker 1 (31:39):
If you do know, text the word Texas eight one
to five three zero followed by your message. Of course,
our thoughts in prayers are with those who have been
affected by the catastrophic flooding here in central Texas. The
count up to eighty two people that have lost their
lives over this weekend, sixteen in the Austin area, sorry,
(32:03):
thirteen in the Austin area, fifteen still missing, seven in
Travis County, two and Williamson in three in Burnett. Of course,
you know, I'm sure we've all seen the videos of
whether it's the Lano River flooding or the San Gabriel
up in Georgetown, and of course what we've seen in Currville.
So again, our thoughts and prayers are with those in
Kirr County, in Williamson County, Travis County, Burnett County, those
(32:25):
who have been affected, and of course those have been
hurt by the loss of twenty seven campers and counselors
in camp missed it. Just very sad at the Old
Girls Camp was washed away in Curveville, Texas. Just very sad,
of course, I believe ten are still missing, but so
far eighty two people have lost their lives this weeken
(32:47):
over with the catastrophic flooding. Fat friends who have been affected.
It's Marvel Falls, Logo, Fista area, even up in just
round Rock. I've seen a lot of driveways and has
been completely wiped away. And of course what we see
out in Currveville just just very sad. And those who
are looking to help out in some way. If you
(33:10):
want to be able to donate, here's how through iHeartRadio
who have partnered.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
This weekend with the Community Foundation. Here and I'll go
ahead and just give you the website if you would
like to reach out Communityfoundation dot net donate to the
Kerk County Flood Relief Fund. These funds are being directed
to local organizations and rescue, relief and recovery efforts, flood
(33:39):
assistant programs for this placed families and individuals, and rebuilding
efforts in the hardest hit areas including Hunt, Texas, Ingram, Kerrville,
Center Point, and Comfort all along the Guadalupe River. The
Foundation has established a Kirk County Flood Relief Fund. Again,
it's the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country. So
(34:00):
please any questions, you can reach out to us here
at iHeartRadio. But this is to help those who have
been hurt by this just incredible, just weather event that
we have seen this past weekend. And again, you know,
you can always check out our social media pages as
well that have links and listen to today's program in
(34:20):
the morning kickoff as well as other programs here on
Fox Sports Network. So again, thoughts and prayers for that,
and you know, we'll continue to update any more breaking
news that have come out. The depth toll now up
to ninety actually for the Associated Press as of three
o'clock this afternoon. So just very very very sad turn
(34:42):
of events this past weekend. Switching back over the sports
here as is sometimes hard to do after this past weekend,
But there was a three team trade in the NBA,
the Clippers the Jazz, and he was not seven teams,
only three teams this time, and it seems pretty low key,
(35:03):
but I think there might be deeper meaning to this.
So the trade sends Norman Powell from the Clippers the
Miami Heat, John Collins from the Utah Jazz to the
Los Angeles Clippers, and Kevin Love and Kylin Henderson in
a twenty seven second round pick to Utah. Now I
know your first thought is Kevin loves still playing basketball.
(35:26):
Technically he is now the centerpiece in this trade, you
might say, is Norman Powell, Thirty two years old, coming
off a career best twenty one point eight points per
game this past season in LA All Star candidate started
sixty games, first time in his career. By the way,
he's a great shooter forty two percent from me on
(35:47):
the three point arc, great defender, six foot foot guard,
considered to be, you know, an ideal fit for Miami's
heat culture quote unquote, and his extension eligible and entering
the final year of his deal at twenty point four
million dollars this season.
Speaker 1 (36:05):
For John Collins, he's kind of like Malics Turner. He's been,
you know, in trade rumors ever since he was drafted,
twenty seven years old, athletic big I believe he's also
entering the last year of his deal twenty six and
a half million dollars this season, you know, kind of
played sparingly for the Jazz, you know, kind of a
tanking team. Neither Collins or Powell's or Powell were expected
(36:29):
to sign an extension with either team. According to Shams
in ESPN, Powell was one of the league's best six man,
one of the league's best six men in his first
two seasons in LA before becoming a start of this
past season. Of course, with all the injuries to Kwhi
and Harden and everyone there, Clippers, looking for a little
bit more cap flexibility, probably would not be able to
(36:49):
afford to give Powell the long term extension that he
would want, So going out and grabbing John Collins something
that they could possibly extend. Uh, the Clippers only starting
center right now is Brook Lopez. Okay, luck with that,
although I believe they have Subotch Till Suebatch fantastic defender.
(37:10):
So Sue Botch, Collins, Lopez not a bad not a bad. Uh.
The front court there for the Jazz side of it,
you know, you know, a team that's kind of in
between tanking and now pushing the throw down to get
Kevin Love Anderson. But here's here's where I have landed
on this. Sometimes, and I could be completely wrong on this.
(37:35):
You'll have kind of these weird pre trades before the
bigger trade. But you see the trade and you're thinking, okay, whatever,
Powell to Miami. You know, are the Miami Heat now
all of a sudden contenders in the Eastern Conference by
adding Norman Powell? No? I mean, sure, yeah, he's he's
a great player. But how much better is the Miami
(37:55):
Heat now because they add Norman Powell? I mean they're
starting five. I've what Rozier who may get suspended, may not,
who knows where Powell Hero Wiggins out of bio Okay,
six seed?
Speaker 2 (38:12):
Five seed?
Speaker 1 (38:14):
Is Eric Spolstra and Pat Rilly really talking themselves into
contending in the Eastern Conference just because Tatum and Halliburton
are out for the year, Uh, you know, gonna be rehabbing.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (38:28):
I could see this being a precursor to a bigger
trade with Utah Jazz. You know, we we've kind of
heard rumblings about Walker Kessler or Lori markin In. I
think there's something bigger looming out there. I don't know,
but I wouldn't say it's gonna involve Lebron James. I
think he's gonna stick in Los Angeles. But if all
(38:50):
of a sudden, you know, we see Golden State maybe
make a make some make a big trade here the
Utah for market in or Kessler.
Speaker 2 (38:56):
I wouldn't be surprised, that's all. That's all. So we'll see.
Speaker 1 (39:00):
Maybe this move ends up being nothing here, But I
don't see how Norman Powell to Miami Heat changes a
lot of things. Maybe this could be a bigger move
for the Heat as well. NBA's Summer League about to
begin in a couple of long Horns in action in
Las Vegas. Some quick notes on that. Five former Longhorns,
including Max Saysmis, Trey Johnson, Arthur Kalooma, Sergeabari Rice, and
(39:24):
Cayden Schedrick. So A SMIs who's with the Utah Jazz
is past season, will play for the Utah Jazz in
the NBA Summer League here in Las Vegas in twenty
and twenty five. Last season, played for the Salt Lake
City Stars in the NBA G League. Average thirteen point
eight points per game, four four point eight assists, played
(39:47):
twenty six minutes per contest, drained thirty seven percent of
his three pointers during the season. Of course, you know,
Akesmiths came from Oral Roberts. He was so much fun
to watch, great teammate, great guy. I had some really
good moments in Salt Lake City this past season, so
he'll be playing the Summer League this year. Trey Johnson,
a course number six overall pick in the twenty five
(40:08):
NBA Draft by the Wizards, the tenth lottery pick in
the NBA draft and UT program history, and first since
Jackson Hayes in twenty nineteen. Trey Johnson he'll be playing
with the Washington Wizards, who have been making some moves
this offseason. Arthur Klumba one year starter at Texas after
spending two years at Creighton and one year at k State.
(40:29):
Kalumba will be playing for the Los Angeles Lakers in
the Summer League. Four years playing college basketball, sixteen hundred points,
eight one hundred rebounds, reachable figures ninety three times, topping
the twenty point mark twelve times, and surpassed the thirty
point mark once in his career. I like Columba's game.
(40:52):
He can score from anywhere on the floor. Good defender.
I hope it works out for Kluma. I'll be playing
for the Lakers. Serve to Brie Rice also with the
Los Angeles Lakers as well, so a couple of Texas teammates.
Rice who spent this last season playing for the South
Bay Lakers. Played in forty games in the tip Off
Tournament and the regular season for the South Bay Lakers,
(41:13):
average thirteen and a half points per game, three point
one assists in twenty one minutes, shot over fifty percent
from the floor, in forty one percent from beyond three
point range.
Speaker 2 (41:23):
Of course, he was.
Speaker 1 (41:24):
Drafted by the Spurs, was in Austin for a season
that went to Swuo Falls, and then this past year
in between two falls in South Bay and Cayden. Shedrick
a two year player at Texas, one year starter at
Textuallyder spending three seasons at Virginia, played over one hundred
and forty three curric colgic collegiate games and recorded over
(41:45):
one thousand points, over six hundred rebounds, over two hundred
block Schedrick will be playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers in
the NBA two K twenty six Summer League, which begins
July tenth, on the twentieth in Las Vegas, And actually
I will be out there in Vegas the same time
(42:07):
for the Rundroack Express, so hopefully I can maybe do
a little double dip and do some NBA coverage from
the summer League.
Speaker 2 (42:12):
We'll see about that, so we'll continue.
Speaker 1 (42:14):
Here our two of today's program here on The Craigway Show.
You're listening on the free iHeartRadio app. Continuing here our
(42:42):
two of The Craigway Show. Cameron Parker filling in for
Craigway on this Monday edition here on thirteen hundred the Zone.
Glad to have you with us when they're listening in
your car, on your radio dial or on the free
iHeart Radio app. Eric Henry from two four seven will
be joining us next hour, and I want to touch
(43:02):
on his piece he put on a confidence level in
each Texas football position group. Before that, some bit of
breaking news here as we have just learned that Texas
target four star linebacker Braden Rowse has announced that he
will move his commitment date up to Tomorrow, July eighth,
(43:22):
six pm Central Time on his top four consisting of Texas, Alabama, Michigan,
and Tennessee. This has been reported by Jordan Scruggs from
Horns two four seven. Rows by the way from Marietta, Georgia,
six foot two to twenty, number six to eight, overall
(43:44):
number four linebacker in the nation, number eight and state
of Georgia. According to two four seven Sports despite being
from Georgia. His top two believes to be Tennessee in Texas,
with optimism pointing towards Texas. In the last couple of
weeks two four sevens, Hanks South reported through a source
(44:07):
the recruitment was going to be quote a coin flip
between Tennessee and Texas. On Monday, July first, a week ago,
and then the next day South follow up with some
more buzz on the Texas side. He wrote that it
sounds like this could be breaking more towards Texas as
we draw closer to the decision. As we continue digging.
He did not have a decision date set at the time,
(44:29):
but is mulling over the pros and cons. The last
couple of weeks, Texas was pressing to get Rouse on board.
We're told that some ait Texas few routes as highly
as any linebacker target the staff has this cycle. Due
to his fersatility, Texas was pushing hard. That was about
a week ago. Since then, there's been a more positive
chatter and in the two four sevens this sampede. The
(44:52):
recruiting piece that came out this morning deeper the uh
expected or the thoughts of Texas that Len Rouse was
so the staff over half the staff believing that Rowse
would commit to Texas and then that was before finding
out that he had moved the decision date up to tomorrow. Rowse,
(45:13):
according to this report from Jordan Scruggs, Rouse has yet
to inform the Texas staff what his decision will be,
but we will find out, of course tomorrow at six
o'clock Central time. On the scanning report on rows As,
he's a rangey second level defender who can flow downhill,
can strike ball carriers as well as he can drop
in the coverage and operate in space. He is played linebacker,
(45:36):
defensive edge, safety, receiver and tight end in high school.
An immense three phase production at the for a level,
it's been a noticeable leap on the defensive side of
the ball. As a junior, of course, he's part of
the twenty twenty six class here he plays styland sideline,
can evade blockers in space with these exceptional defender to
(45:57):
the point where he could offer flexibility as a potential
overhang on Saturdays and we'll routinely make highlight snacks at
the catch point on both sides of the ball, and
has shown serious yards after catchability for a player of
his side, so he is a linebacker target. Of course,
Texas just picked up a linebacker earlier in the past week.
(46:20):
We mentioned, of course John Turntime, the four star offensive lineman,
but Texas also earned the pledge of Koziak Paula, the
three star linebacker from May Creek down in Houston, Texas.
So Texas trying to add another linebacker, perhaps through their class.
But he will be announcing tomorrow evening at six pm.
(46:42):
But this is between Texas and Tennessee, and it sounds
like things are trending in the direction of the long corn,
so we'll talk about that. I'll keep an eye on
that here throughout the week as we get closer and
closer to Week one the clashotball season. But this June
July month, you know, it's really become a huge part
of the high school football recruiting as a lot of
(47:03):
these schools now kind of want to have their class
wrapped up for the most part heading into the college
football season. That's why we're seeing so many kids aside
to you know, end up committing in June and July,
and even guys in like twenty twenty seven, you know,
by the way La Damien Geiten, who is the number
(47:24):
one overall recruit of a leave in the twenty twenty
seven class five star Defensive Edge RPMs now projecting that
he's going to go to Texas Tech. So who knows,
maybe he'll be getting five percent of their revenue sharing
going forward. But you know, Tech making some making some moves.
They are emptying their pockets in this new al portal. Okay,
(47:48):
real quick, we might split this up in this segment
next segment here, but Eric Henry from Orange two four
to seven ranked his confidence level in each this group.
And Eric listening, you know, sorry, might might argue a
little bit here, but I'd love to hear from y'all
on this as well. Text word texts to eight one
to five, three zero, followed by your message okay ten
(48:11):
groupings you know on both sides of the ball, not
including not including special teams here, But if you're thinking
okay one through ten where you know, how would you
rank them in terms of number one being most confident?
It's number ten being least confident. I think for me,
(48:31):
the most confident I'm in I have three groups. You
could split the secondary up between safeties in cornerbacks. But
if you if you were to just put safeties in there,
they might be number one linebacker defensive line right now,
(48:54):
if you're splitting up defensive line between edges and tackles,
you might have Egine number one one. I think for me,
the number one, number one spot in this team that
I'm most confident in is probably linebacker Anthony Hill Leonge
Laval and that four two five based defense. That's the
best linebacking coordination. That's what Eric Henry writes as well. Plus,
(49:16):
you know, you bring in Brad Spence, who had a
couple of handful of sacks at Arkansas this past year.
And then I'm really high on to Anthony Smith sophomore.
I thought he had some fantastic moments this past year.
We heard Sark kind of talk about him. You know,
he did a couple of interviews so far. He talked
about to Anthony Smith. And as someone who's had a
(49:39):
good spring in summer, you know, sophomore from from Jasper.
He played in sixteen games last season as a true freshman,
sixteen tackles, interception, one a half TfL's half a sack.
I'm very bullish onto Anthony Smith Anthony Hill. Is he
the best linebacker in the country? An argument there, So
(50:01):
I output linebacker at two at won number two output
the edge. That's because of Colin Simmons. I want to
hear what Eric has to say, but I think Colin
Simmons he he will be an All American this next season, preseason, postseason.
(50:22):
Give him all the accolades, All SEC Player of the week.
What's the record for most sacks in the season. Colin
Simmons will be in that conversation. We saw his potential
at Duncanville. I saw him play a couple times in
high school and just thought, Okay, this kid's playing a
different game. He was a massive get for sark in PK.
(50:45):
But this past season in his freshman season, just as
a true freshman, sixteen games, nine sacks as a true freshman,
nine sacks, and he wasn't even playing every snap. Remember
a lot of times Colin Simmons would only come down
come out in the field on third downs. Nine sacks,
by the way, third most in a single season by
(51:06):
a Texas defensive freshman, fourteen DFL, second most from the
team in third most by a fresh offensive player in
a single season, and Remember he was doing this by
not playing every snap on the field. We heard Sart
talk about it on Always College Football with Greg mccroy.
He wants Simmons on the field that pretty much every play.
And of course there's something that being, you know, having
(51:28):
depth and not you know, tiring your guys out, you know,
rotating guys in and out. We talked about Colin Simmons here.
You know, if you're if you're a coordinator, off it's
a coordinator. You're like, all right, where where's number? And
he's number?
Speaker 4 (51:42):
Is he nine now?
Speaker 1 (51:43):
And he's one? He's one? Yeah, because he is number one?
You're planning on. Okay, how do we stop Colin Simmons. Hey,
guess who's on the other side of the football field.
Tray More, who I thought was slept on this past season,
uh transferred the taxes from UTSA right as a junior
(52:05):
sixteen starts at ten and a half TFLs, six and
a half more sacks. He is one of three Texas
players to do that. His six and a half sacks
with third most on the team. He had multiple fumble recoveries,
multiple force fumbles. He had, you know, two sacks against
Arizona State, had four games at least one sack.
Speaker 2 (52:25):
And again you have.
Speaker 1 (52:27):
Colin Simmons out there on the other side of the field.
That's gonna draw a lot of attention. Now you have
to worry about Trey Moore good luck, and then guys
behind them like Ethan Burke. You know, I think we
still have not seen the true ceiling of Ethan Burke,
the former Westlake product. I think, you know, he'd spent
some time nicked up this past season. But with Burke
(52:50):
out there, I'm super bullish on him, and then his
you know, former teammate, Colton Faustik. And then there's one
guy we're talked about, the freshman aspect of Colin Simmons.
Have you guys seen Lance Jackson. He came and visited Texas,
you know, for an ov during a football game, and
I saw him walking We were walking back to you know,
(53:11):
the postgame interview with Sark and you know, Lance Jackson
was their an official visit or unofficial I don't know.
But all of a sudden, I see this dude who's
I don't know. He looks like an NFL football player,
and I'm like, wait a second, who is this a
former Texas player? But he had the recruit badge on.
You know, you can kind of tell when recruit he
is visiting six five, two fifty seven. He he looks
(53:34):
like a football player and everything I've heard from him
from from people with the team and those who understand
football at a high level than I do, have been
talking about this dude. Number two edge recruit in the
on three classes past season, number three by two four
seven rivals, five star, number six overall recruit in Texas.
(53:54):
Lance Jackson's going to be the guy in a couple
of year. He's gonna have a He's gonna have a
game this season. He might have two sacks in the game.
It might come against Sam Houston State or UTEP, whoever.
Lance Jackson is next, after Colin Simmons, after Trey Moore,
after Colton Fassek. Tra Lance Jackson is that guy. So
that's a position group I would have at number two,
(54:16):
number three in terms of you know, most confident, I
would put the secondary, including safety and cornerback in there.
You're bringing back Michael taff He'll be all SEC. And
now you're losing some guys like Shandy Baron, you know,
of course, losing Andrew mccouba. But you able to bring
back in Michael Taff, who you know, played so many
(54:39):
different spots on the defense this past season. You bring
back his maturity, his leadership at at safety. Now you
have the opportunity who's going to be alongside him And
we'll talk to Eric Henry about this guy. But Jolana McDonald,
whether it's Starr, it's safety. What about Derek Williams Remember
(54:59):
Derek Walla? Yeah, you know he was banged up last
He's missed over half the year with a season. Any injury,
he's back, he'll be starting. You put him out there.
All of a sudden, you feel really good about your
secondary with Michael Taff, Derek Williams McDonald. You bring back
you know, the five star Xavior if Osami his second season.
(55:23):
He had some flashes this past year, Warren Robertson. You know,
he a lot of people were high on him. He
played cornerback. And speaking of cornerbacks, you know Manny Muhammad,
I know, didn't have the end of the year that
I think a lot of Texas fans were hoping for.
Speaker 2 (55:37):
But you bring him back from the season.
Speaker 1 (55:39):
Jalen Gilbert, by the way, the senior he might be
at Nickel, he may be a corner. I've been high
on Gilbert and then Kobe Black, the sophomore. Was it
from Waco Connolly, I think, yeah, wake O Connolly. You
know Texas the staff really high on Kobe Black. So
that's that's the unit there that I'm I have the
(56:00):
third most confidence since so linebacker, defensive edge in secondary one, two,
and three. Now we haven't got to I haven't got
to offensive side of the ball yet. And for me,
I would put wide receiver here. And this is a
lot different than Eric Henry's list because he has wide
(56:21):
receiver actually at number nine.
Speaker 2 (56:24):
But for me, I know we're losing.
Speaker 1 (56:26):
I know Texas losing the number three returners, but I
think everybody in this unit is an absolute dog. You
bring back Ryan Wingo and DeAndre Moore. I love DeAndre Moore.
I think he's He's a fantastic wide receiver. He kind
of reminds me a little bit of Jordan Winnington in
terms of his ability to block, to hustle. Love him,
(56:48):
Love Wingo. I think you know Wingo, you don't think
both guys well, Wingo had Lasik eye surgery over the
past year. You know, more at some injuries. But then
the receiver class to bring in. You get bring Emitt
Mosey from Stanford, who was that veteran, you know, leadership guy.
You know, he's played a lot of football games, been
there before. But then you got guys like Click Lockett,
you know, Michael Terry Parker Livingston, Jimmie Frinch, Jylan mccutche,
(57:10):
and Aaron Butler. A lot of dudes in that room,
a lot of hungry dudes. I think a lot of
and again I'm gonna say this is probably way too
many times the next couple of years, but I always
think of the Alabama picture of Waddle and Judy and
Smith and Ruggs. I think this Texas receiver room we're
gonna look at in three four years, we're gonna see,
(57:32):
you know, more and wing Go and Lockett in French,
Terry McCutcheon all in the NFL. I'm like, man, yeah,
that receiver room. That was nasty. And I think Art's
Manning is the guy to get the ball across them.
So that's that's my top four. Well, we'll come back
and look at the five groups that I'm a little
bit more worried about heading into twenty twenty five. Then
(57:53):
we're gonna get Eric Henry's thoughts on it as well,
because after all, this is his article here, so our
two of today's program can after this. Okay, quickly here,
(58:32):
I'm gonna make a little in this Outletmit early so
we can spend some more time with Eric Henry in
the next hour talking about groups that on the texaside
of football things you know, most confident and least confident.
I put out you know, my top couple ones linebacker, secondary,
defensive line, or edge spots really receivers number four, number five,
(58:58):
I would put quarterbacks in that spot and you might say, okay,
you know, there's the arch manning hype.
Speaker 2 (59:05):
Here's the thing.
Speaker 1 (59:06):
Last time we've had a season where the Texas starting
quarterback did not get injured was wait, okay, I'll keep
waiting because the answer it's been a long time. We've
not had a quarterback play throughout the entire year since
like Sam Ellinger, who by the way, probably had about
forty different injuries and just played through everything because Texas
and Tom Herman had no other choice but to play
(59:27):
him if arts goes down and hopefully he can stay healthy.
But it's such a long and grueling season at this
point that these guys' bodies they just don't hold up
that well. Because you're playing freaking Ohio State in week one.
Then you go to the SEC with all these four
stars and five stars. You gotta get banged up, right,
You're one under start Hudson, car Casey Thompson went back
(59:47):
and forth.
Speaker 2 (59:48):
Year two. Of course, you know Quinn, you wer is
getting injured.
Speaker 1 (59:50):
And of course last season, you know, whether it was
Malik Murphy coming in two years ago for Quinn. This
past season, of course, arch Manning coming in for Quinn
happened to start games. There a chance to arch man
at some point, you know, does get injured. Now, fortunately
it does seem like arch has had has held up
pretty well health wise.
Speaker 4 (01:00:08):
Right.
Speaker 2 (01:00:08):
We knew about.
Speaker 1 (01:00:09):
Quinn's kind of injuries in high school. You know, he
missed a large chunk of time with an oblique injury.
It sound like Carol didn't play his senior year of
high school, was injured at Ohio State. So you know,
maybe Quinn is just one of those guys that's just
always going to be injured, and you know, maybe arch
just plays three years and is healthy. It seems like
Peyton and Eli did a great job of protecting themselves
(01:00:31):
and staying healthy. But arch is a little bit more
of a runner than Eli and Peyton were, So I
would have them at number five, you know, just because
the chance that he can get nicked up early and
all of a sudden, you know, I love the ceiling
of Trey Owens and kJ Lacey and you bringing the
Troy quarterback, But all of a sudden, you know, your
(01:00:52):
outlook on the team looks a little bit different than
it does with arch Man at quarterback. We'll look at
the entire list from Eric Henry Horns two four seven
the next hour, as we'll be back to wrap up
our two up today's program here on thirteen hundred The Zone.
All Right, final hour of today's program here July seventh
on The Craigway Show. Cameron Parker filling in for Craig
(01:01:13):
Way last week without mister Way, as we will be
live from Atlanta, Georgia, beginning next Monday through next Wednesday,
and Craig will be joining me from the College Football
Hall of Fame for the SEC Media Day, So super
excited for that and that opportunity as well. Texas will
(01:01:33):
take the stage. We'll speak on Tuesday where Steve Saracashan
will do his media press conference, and then he'll do
some hits on TV and radio, including an exclusive sit
down with Craig Way himself, and of course usually they
bring a couple of players, so that has not been
announced yet, but we will do our best to bring
you some exclusive content and visiting with some players, including
(01:01:53):
hopefully mister arch Manning our first sit down with Archie Manny.
So a lot of fun content will come from next week,
So make sure if you don't already have the free
iHeart app, go ahead and download it. Add thirteen hundred
the Zone to your presets page. Along with the morning
kickoff in the Craigway Show, because we'll be there as well.

(01:02:15):
I believe Mark Henry and Marcus Spears will be joining
him back from the studio here in Austin, Texas. But
Harte will be broadcasting live on site as well. And
you know Harg he knows everybody, as does Craig, so
they will bring in a lot of real fun guests
as well castable insiders former players. Get you some great content,
and we'll bring you content as well from other coaches
who will be speaking at the SEC media Day, so
(01:02:37):
of course Kirby Smart in Georgia. In fact, you know,
real quick, I'll run down the schedule for you guys here.
Monday lsu Ole, miss South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Tuesday, Texas along
with Georgia, Tennessee and auburns So tit. Tuesday will be
a huge day with Georgia and Texas and then also
with Tennessee with Josh Hipel. You know, with all this
(01:02:59):
other happened with Nico I am Ali Ava and the
NFL and the portal hype may be pretty fired up.
It's gonna be a big year for Tennessee, especially after losing,
you know, first off, after making the Calas Football Playoff,
but now losing their star quarterback. Wednesday Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma,
and Mississippi State, and then Thursday Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri and
A and M. We will not be there live on Thursday,
(01:03:20):
but we still will be able to bring you the
live press conferences and all that good stuff, So looking
forward to that come next week. This week, just give
you guys a heads up of the schedule. We're gonna
rotate in and out with Andrew Zimmel. He'll be here
Tuesday and Thursday and then Friday. Actually we'll be conducting
the music survey with mister Andrew Simmel, so looking forward
(01:03:42):
to that. That'll be three o'clock on Friday. He'll be
joining me live in studio for that, so that should
be or live on over the computer, so that should
be a lot of fun too. As we continue our
music survey series that Craig Way will pick up next Friday,
so looking forward to that this week as well of course,
and kickoff seven to nine am every day, and of
course the Round Rock Express continuing their surge, and next
(01:04:07):
week will be the MLB All Star breaks, so no
games the first couple of days of the week, and
then actually out in Las Vegas. We're all be on
the call for link in for Ryland Kobri, so you're
looking for some Express baseball. I'll be out there in
Las Vegas next week, so that'll be a lot of
fun as well. You know, we continue to monitor and
keep our thoughts in prayers with those who have been
affected by the flash flooding here in Central Texas and
(01:04:30):
We talked about it to begin the show, and we'll
continue to discuss it as well.
Speaker 2 (01:04:35):
Here.
Speaker 1 (01:04:35):
In Austin, the death toll has risen to twelve people
at least sixteen still missing. According to the Austin American Statesman,
seven have been confirmed dead in Travis County, two in
Williamson County. In Burnett County, the count remains three with
sixteen people still missing. Of course, more than eighty have
lost their life this past weekend. Many others are still missing,
(01:04:58):
including girl who are attending a summer camp in Curveville, Texas.
The devastation along the Guadalupe River has been catastrophic just
outside of San Antonio. Massive search efforts are underway and
a lot of this hit unfortunately Friday morning. Early Friday
morning in the Texas Hill Country. That area of the
state is prone to flash flooding due to the dry,
(01:05:20):
dirt packed areas where the soil let's rain skid along
the surface of the landscape instead of soaking it up,
and Friday's flash flood started with a spadstorm that dropped
about twelve inches of rain early in the morning about
four AM. That's when the National Weather Service Office issued
in urgent warning that raised the potential of a catastrophic
(01:05:41):
damage in severe threat to human life by at least
five twenty am. Some in the Curveville City area say
water levels we're getting alarmingly high. The massive rain flowing
down the hill set rushing water into the Guadalupe River,
causing it to arrive twenty six feet in just forty
five minutes. Texas Governor Greg It said Sunday that there
were forty one people confirmed to be accounted for across
(01:06:03):
the state and more could be missing, and of course,
in Kirk County, home to many youth camps in the
Texas Hill Country, searchers have found the bodies up sixty
eight people, including twenty eight children, according the Sheriff, Larry Litha.
On Sunday afternoon, fatalities in nearby counties brought the total
number of deaths to seventy nine as of Sunday evening.
Ten girls and a camp counselor was still unaccounted for
(01:06:26):
at Camp Mystic, the Christian summer camp along the Guadalupe River.
Beyond the Camp Misstic, campers unaccounted for the number of
missing from others nearby campgrounds and across the region have
not been released. Crivill City Manager Dalton Rice said on
Saturday that they don't even want to begin the estimate
at this time. So our thoughts and prayers again, not
(01:06:48):
just with everyone in Curveville, but also across the Texas
who have suffered a lot of damage and have lost
some loved ones due to this central flooding. I know
some people afflicted out in Marble Falls and and Cedar Park,
even in Round Rock just off of my road. We
had our driveway to our apartment complex washed away just
from the flooding. So our thoughts and pressure with them.
(01:07:11):
And if you're wondering how you can get involved with iHeartRadio,
this is how you guys can do so as the
Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country wanted the passes
along as the Foundation has established the Kerr County Flood
Relief Funds specifically aimed at helping those affected in communities
such as Hunt, Texas, Ingram, Kerrville, Center Point, and Comfort
(01:07:33):
All along the Guadalupe River. These relief funds are being
directed to local organizations involved in rescue, relief and recovery efforts,
flood assistance programs for displaced families and individuals, and rebuilding
efforts in the hardest hit areas. To donate to the
Central Texas Flood Really Fund, you can go to Communityfoundation
(01:07:54):
dot net, which will direct you to organizations at iHeartRadio
is working with with the Community Foundation of the Texas
Hill Country to help those who have been affected by
the catastrophic flooding here in Central Texas. So again, our
thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected.
Just a very very sad weekend for many people. To
(01:08:18):
continue here on our three of today's program. Up next,
we're going to visit with Eric Henry from Horns two
four seven and two four seven sports dot com. We're
going to talk a little Texas recruiting. What transpired over
the weekend sent some shock waves across the landscape of
college football after Felix Ojo, the five starfensive lineman for
(01:08:39):
Mansfield who was believed to be committing the Texas ends
up committing the Texas Tech after receiving a grandfather offer
from the Red Raiders five million dollars over three years guaranteed.
So he will be heading to Lubbock, spurning Texas and
Ohio State, which, if you're on any message board sites,
boy there was a meltdown for sure, but tax has
(01:09:02):
picked up the editions of John Turntime and a few
others as well over the weekend. So we'll talk with
Eric Henry about that, and also a couple of his
pieces from the website, including Eric's ranking of the ten
Texas football positional groups, ranking them from ten to one,
the confidence level in each group going from ten to one.
(01:09:22):
We'll get his thoughts on that, and a defensive back
that Eric Henry has his eyes on in twenty twenty five.
So I have all that and more here on The
Craigway Show, a Monday edition. And you're listening on the
free iHeartRadio app. It's The Craigway Show with the voice
(01:09:46):
of the Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame Broadcasting Craig Way.
Back here on Monday's edition of The Craigway Show. Glad
to have you with us. Hope you are staying dry
and now joining us. My good friend who's taken the
time even though he's in Florida right now, hot and
humid Florida, which you might confuse with Texas the last
(01:10:08):
couple of weeks, is my guy, Eric c Henry from
Horns two four seven and two four seven sports dot com.
Who joins us live from Florida. Man, I really appreciate
you doing taking some time even though technically are con
like a.
Speaker 2 (01:10:20):
Little bit of a work vacation. How you doing, Eric?
Speaker 7 (01:10:23):
First off, cam my guy, what is going on? Appreciate
the invite as always appreciate you including the seeds. The
titled in name right is always get included. And on
a serious notes, as you mentioned, I am away from Florida,
thoughts and persons everybody who's been affected in Central Texas.
I've seen the news of that weep in away, so
just want to make sure to echo that sound.
Speaker 2 (01:10:42):
Yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 1 (01:10:43):
Well, let's begin with Texas football recruiting news from over
the weekend. It was a good and I don't know,
maybe I don't know if bad's the right word, but
up and down weekend for Texas football recruiting. Obviously, you
add in some great pieces our Paula the four star,
John Turntime the four star, and then kind of the
shocking news perhaps is Felix Ojo ends up committing to
(01:11:03):
Texas Tech when the day before it felt like it
was going to be Texas where ile state ends up
at Texas Tech five million dollars over three years. Let's
begin with the good news. How does the commitments of
Turntime and Okpala effective recruiting class for Texas here in
twenty twenty six before we get into the guys who
didn't go the way of Texas.
Speaker 7 (01:11:23):
Yeah, you know, I'll start with John Turntime, hid out
of North Crowley and the area certainly that has treated
Texas well.
Speaker 8 (01:11:29):
Fort Worth, Texas. This has been my big take, Kim.
Speaker 7 (01:11:32):
When it comes to offensive line with the Longhorns under
Steve starkes in position coach Kyle Flood, excuse me, it's
really imperative that Texas continue the pipeline of recruiting talent
up front. The Longhorns have been a program that have
not hit the transfer portal when it comes to offensive linemen.
And it's interesting because we've seen him hit the portal
(01:11:53):
darn near every other position. Right.
Speaker 8 (01:11:55):
We've seen them bring a quarterback this cycle.
Speaker 7 (01:11:57):
We've seen them, you know, bring in receivers, tight ends,
defensive lineman Edge Trey More, linebacker Brad Spence. Really across
the board, you know, kicker, a punter, a special specialists.
They've been hesitant to recruit offensive line or to hit
recruit offensive line to the portal. I think it's twofold
one because of the thing that I feel very strongly about.
Offensive line is such a technique position, such a mental position.
(01:12:19):
When you have two three four position coaches in your
collegiate career alone, that'll mess you up, right, So I think,
and Steve is kind of hinted at this. He's never
outright said it, but he's kind of hinted at it.
We like the way that we develop our guys, right,
So let's spend that forward and I'll bring into the
John Turntow in a second. You take a look at
the offensive line over the last few years, saw home grown, right,
(01:12:40):
and now you lose four starters. You are bringing guys
who are a little bit inexperienced, necessarily young, but inexperienced
Cole Hudson, Nato and Missoulu and others. But because Texas
isn't hitting the portal, it's crucial that they have that
backlog can because look at it this way, right, you're
not going to hit on all of them. A kid
like Lie Gogbo, for example, super talented, was in the
heavy package a few years he now moves on to
(01:13:02):
West Virginia.
Speaker 8 (01:13:03):
You lose a couple other guys. I'm forgetting the kid's name.
Speaker 7 (01:13:06):
From Florida off top of my Peyton Kirkland right from
a few years ago. So you're not gonna hit on
all of them. So you need to have a deep
backlog if you're going to depend on recruiting.
Speaker 8 (01:13:14):
Can talk about John Turnton again, uh.
Speaker 7 (01:13:16):
A four star kid, someone who's upside seems to be
really high. I love getting those guys that tackle that
I think you can kind of swing into guard if
they get a little bit bigger. Right, Remember Cam Williams
seem not Cam Williams. DJ Campbell was initially you know,
someone who could could play tackle, right, assume it's side
inside the guard. So definitely like that pickup. And then
you go on the defensive side of the football. Get
(01:13:38):
Cosey Akpala from Houston. He kind of reminds me, and
you know, I hope this isn't you know, just being
lazy of the comparison David Benda type, right.
Speaker 8 (01:13:47):
Someone who I think has while Benda maybe you.
Speaker 7 (01:13:49):
Say his upside wasn't quite as high as I think
you have here with Akpala, Uh, someone who you knows
a downhill linebacker going to make plays with the line
of scrimmage and just has that frame to be roll
into a six two sixty three two hundred and forty
five pound two and fifty pounds linebacker.
Speaker 8 (01:14:05):
He was already six two two thirty.
Speaker 7 (01:14:07):
Now, all right, so you think, and even even maybe
a different scenario camp, maybe he's an edge. Maybe he's
a six two sixty three two sixty edge at some
point in his career. So I'll love the upside there.
Speaker 1 (01:14:16):
The two guys that did not go in the way
of Texas Felix Ojo, the five star offensive lineman who
a couple days before the commitment date from July fourth,
it was trending towards Texas, Ohio state, and then all
of a sudden we see reports of Texas Tech coming
in out of nowhere. And the reason why, well, a
five million dollar contract over three years using some of
Texas Tech's revenue sharing, which I believe is about five
(01:14:39):
six percent of their yearly revenue devoted to Ojo.
Speaker 2 (01:14:44):
Texas Tech. You got to give it to him.
Speaker 1 (01:14:45):
They're getting very creative in ways and landing players and
in Kiton Finley, the Alito wide receiver going notre Dame.
Texas has never been able to recruit a Leedo for
some reason. And Finley kind of following Sup in the
way of Jaydon Greathouse to Austin Westlake product. How will
those two guys not committing the Texas impact this class?
Speaker 7 (01:15:01):
Yeah, you know, I'll start with Finley and I'll i'll,
you know, kind of pair him with Jayden Greathhouse. Give
a shout out to our guy, Jordan Scruggs is a
great job or a recruiting guy over at Horns twenty
four to seven dot com, you know, and speaking with Jordan,
I don't want to speak for him, but in speaking
with him, uh, you know, and work chats and whatnot,
it kind of seemed as if this could be.
Speaker 8 (01:15:18):
A possibility with both of those players going elsewhere.
Speaker 7 (01:15:21):
Right, for a myriad of reasons, I still think Texas again,
talk about that backlog.
Speaker 8 (01:15:26):
They're deep at receiver, Okay, all right, can't.
Speaker 7 (01:15:28):
Forget you bringing Jamie French, Kalie Lockett, Dyalen McCutcheon. You
have Parker Livingstone, others, right, Aaron Butler, the list goes on.
Speaker 8 (01:15:35):
They're deep at receiver. I They'll say this.
Speaker 7 (01:15:38):
As long as Steve Sarkigen is the head coach in Austin,
I don't think they're gonna have an issue recruiting receiver.
And then also, and I've made this point with You've
made this point on the morning kickoff at Harj and
Mark Henry Texas being able to recruit the way they
have at quarterback, right getting an arch man who's willing
to sit for a few years, getting a df bels
who comes from that athletic you know mentality of course,
(01:15:59):
being the son of Raja Bell. If you can get
a quarterback cam who at least will sit for two
years and not hit the portal, then you've got quarterback covered.
So worst case scenario, if Texas needs to dip into
the portal, they can at receiver.
Speaker 8 (01:16:12):
In terms of Felix Ojo.
Speaker 7 (01:16:13):
You know, this might not be the answer that's going to,
you know, appease most Texas fans, but I look at
it is and I'm not accusing Texas fans painting. It's
just my perspective from the broader college football landscape. Don't
hate the player, hate the game, right because that's what
the game is right now. When it comes to Texas
Tech they are taking advantage of the rules or should
I say lack there of rules, because there is still
(01:16:34):
not a true structure or true framework around this. I
know the House settlement dropped him that you know, gave
us revenue sharing, but we still don't have the guard
rails and kind of the framework that I think, whether
it be Steve Sarkasian or you know, many collegetball fans
would want around a compensation of players. So you are
going to have situations like you said, Cam where Felix
Ojo looked like it was down between Texas and Oklahoma
(01:16:55):
even though he canceled the Zoe You visit. Then Texas
Tech swoops in at the last minute, and God bless
the kid forgetting all guaranteed. This is not going to
be a Jaden rush outa type deal where the money
is promised and all of a sudden it's the campus
and it's not there. Right, But I guess to spend
that four for Texas again, it just makes the the
you know, verbal commitment of turn time and and you
know texts will need to continue recruiting office line in
(01:17:17):
from the high school ranks that much more crucial because
you missed out on a big time talent like Ojoe.
Speaker 1 (01:17:21):
Yeah, and I think with Ojo's commitment, I think you know,
fan bases had this idea of Okay, like you want
to come to texascause you want to win a national championship.
Speaker 2 (01:17:29):
Rak what does a fan want? A fan wants to
win a national championship.
Speaker 1 (01:17:32):
For a sixteen to eighteen year old kid, you're thinking about, Okay,
I want to win, but also I want to do
it's best for my career, and I want to make
sure I can make money, right, because all it takes
is one snap and all of a sudden you go
from having a twenty year NFL career two My career
ended in college, right, and so I'll never get upset
with an eighteen year old when you're offered five million
(01:17:52):
dollars for three years guaranteed.
Speaker 2 (01:17:55):
As you pointed out, who is saying no.
Speaker 1 (01:17:57):
If I got offered five million dollars right now, they'll
love to do a radio show for three years. Eric,
you best believe I would have my butt out there
immediately because that's money that is life changing.
Speaker 2 (01:18:05):
Right. Felix is set up for the rest of his life.
Speaker 5 (01:18:07):
Now.
Speaker 1 (01:18:07):
If you want to talk about well, you know is
he gonna have the best coaching and the best development
that's going to set them up for the league. Different argument,
but I'll never get upset with a kid doing what's
best for his career because playing football is his career.
It's not always about you know, ring legacy that's so
discussed so much in sports talk, TV and radio, and
(01:18:28):
that's just you know, we saw, whether it's Najorie Kennedy
or other players, this is just a new way of
how college football works in college sports.
Speaker 8 (01:18:39):
In college sports.
Speaker 7 (01:18:39):
And it's funny you gave the example of you and
a radio show because that's what I like to do
when people say, oh man, how could you take the money?
Is it all about the money? I like to use
real life working examples. We all lead jobs every day
for pay raises. I left my previous position covering Group
of five football to cover Texas in part because my
stllar is being doubles. Let's just call it is paid, right. So,
(01:19:02):
and you know, I guess to kind of give a
more substantive, you know, college sports answer. You know, you're
going to have to look at this in a way
like professional sports. And what I mean by that is
this your favorite player may leave the Dallas Cowboys, right,
and they may sign with Well, maybe the Cowboys isn't
the best example, because I mean they've been winning challenged, right,
But let's say you know, insert franchise at Kansas City Chiefs.
(01:19:24):
They may leave the Kansas City Chiefs and sign with,
you know, the Las Vegas Raiders. Not because it's the
best chance to win, but because finances played a part, right,
and you have some free agents who are motivated by finances.
Speaker 8 (01:19:37):
Are motivated by winning.
Speaker 7 (01:19:38):
You're going to have to adopt that mentality here in
college sports because guess what, sixteen through eighteen year olds,
they're even less evolved than the twenty five, twenty six,
twenty seven year old.
Speaker 8 (01:19:46):
We're talking about making those grown decisions. So you got
to kind of view in that sense.
Speaker 6 (01:19:49):
In my opinion.
Speaker 1 (01:19:49):
Yeah, I mean, Miles Turner, former long worn basketball player,
took more money to leave an Indiana Pacer franchise that
was a game away from winning an NBA championship to
go to Milwaukee Bucks because as the Milwaukee Bucks, we're
willing to pay him a lot more money. Yeah, I mean,
I think it's tough to do because the way that
college sports works in the pageantry and the love of
(01:20:10):
the game because you know, at one point you know
you like college football, but more possibly because players weren't
getting played a supposed to the NFL that's gone now.
Like as a fan, you have to understand that the
difference between NFL in college is very neglible now because
of the way the House Settlement has worked in revenue
sharing in the conferences. So I think it all comes
back to just not hating the player, just hate the game.
(01:20:33):
And unfortunately the game gets paid a lot of money
by ESPN and Fox to have these games aired in
the Collegeball Playoff and all this stuff. It's not changing
any time too. It never will be changed, can' I.
Speaker 7 (01:20:45):
Mean, listen, I could belabor you with examples, but you
get to nail on the head and the big thing
for me, I think when you just take a look
at this structure as a whole, right and you talked
about it is just becoming. I don't think your love
or fans love for college sports it needs to evaporate
because it is becoming more and more professional.
Speaker 8 (01:21:02):
I think the love just has to evolve. I think
the lens with which we view it has to evolve.
Speaker 7 (01:21:05):
I never forget Steve Starkesian a spring presser talking about, Hey,
you know, he didn't want to entertain hypotheticals. If you've
ever you know, interviewed Steve, you know he's not a
big hypothetical guy. But the fact of the matter is
it was coming down the line the House settlement and
him saying he doesn't believe that student athletes want to
be employees and coaches don't want inst really coach employees.
And I agree with him. I think his hard is
(01:21:26):
in the right place. But you can't ignore the fact.
And again this brings it full circle of the conversation
we're talking about. You can't ignore the fact that, guess what, Cam,
There's gonna be a point in time which Texas signs
a receiver that makes more than Chris Jackson. Yeah, and
that's going to be a conversation when that receiver says, no,
I don't feel like or if that receivershian say len,
But if that receiver says, I don't feel like doing
X thing, I'm making more of my position, coach, or
(01:21:47):
there could be a quarterback who's making more than Steve's
Sarkasian And those are the types of conversations. I think
every college coach. I'm just using Steve because I cover
him and he said it in a presser, but every
college coach is facing this. We saw, you know in
college basketball, guys like Jay Wright.
Speaker 8 (01:22:01):
And others say things, but no things. That's just where
we're at.
Speaker 1 (01:22:05):
And you know, it kind of goes to Sark's point.
On the third and Long Courting podcast with Nick Shuley
and those guys, you know, he was talked about, you know,
not paying a certain amount of players to that number
that they want because they want to you know, still
have that culture.
Speaker 2 (01:22:20):
Right.
Speaker 1 (01:22:21):
Texas really wanted to sign Felix Ojo. You know, they
could have got creative. You know, any school could be like, hey,
we'll give you five six percent of our revenue. I mean,
Texas is making how much money from the se SEC
revenue TV deal.
Speaker 2 (01:22:33):
It's there, But to your point, does it become a distraction?
Speaker 1 (01:22:36):
And that's what Unfortunately for Sark and Texas where they're
at right now in this program, they don't have to
make sacrifices like that. Okay, I think it's enough nil
talk for for today. We can table that and come
back next week. Eric Henry from horns two four seven.
You have two pieces up, and let's start with the
confidence level in each Texas football position group. And this
is a really good piece here.
Speaker 8 (01:22:57):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:22:58):
I think now as we get closer and closer for
the foot ball season, I've been thinking more about, Okay,
what what groups do I feel confident in?
Speaker 2 (01:23:04):
What groups do I have questions in?
Speaker 1 (01:23:06):
And we can start from from ten to one and
begin with your with your group, Eric, but what is
the position group that you have the least amount of
confidence going in?
Speaker 8 (01:23:17):
To be clear, Yeah, to.
Speaker 7 (01:23:19):
Be clear, when I say the least amount of confidence,
it's not that I think this group is going to
be a liability, that they're horrible. It's just relative to
the rest of the.
Speaker 8 (01:23:26):
Positions on the on the football team.
Speaker 7 (01:23:30):
Number ten, I'm going with offensive line, right, and I'll
just kind of you know, we won't have time to
go through all of them, so I kind of lump
ten through seven because in my mind camp ten through
seven could have been flipped in any different order you want. Right,
we have offensive line, defensive line, receiver, and then tight
end ten through seven. But with offensive line, it's just
a matter of the relative and experience again, not youths,
(01:23:50):
Steve Sarkingen said, but an experience for new starters in
the offensive line, how is that going to come together?
Let's not forget, let's not take for granted the level
of continuity, level of cohesion that Texas offensive line had
the last two years. But like I said, really quick,
I can kind of lump all these together here defensive tackle.
Despite the defensive tackle hall that Texa scott in the
portal camp, you only have one player and that's Mrod
(01:24:11):
Watson from Syracuse of the group of the five who
they acquired who have played starter level snaps, and for
point of reference, starter level snaps are north of four
hundred and fifty If you take a look the last
two years, Devandre Sweat, Byron Murphy, Vernon Brod and Alfred
Collins have all played four hundred and seventy five snaps
are higher. Murad Watson's the only one of the five
who's played starter level snaps. So how will these guys
(01:24:32):
who they've acquired Phil fair and increased roles and then
with receiver again still taking a bit of a wait
and see approach with some of the youth behind guys
like you know.
Speaker 8 (01:24:41):
Mm Mosley and Ryan Wingo and others.
Speaker 7 (01:24:43):
And I'm really high in Ryan Wingo and I've said
that before and then with tight End the same thing.
Speaker 8 (01:24:46):
Jack injuries.
Speaker 7 (01:24:47):
I think he's going to be an All Conference player
quite frankly, but behind him you do have some inexperience.
And I'll throw number six in real quickcause this was
the one camp not that you're steal in your thunder
that got you know, people riled up on our message boards.
Speaker 8 (01:24:59):
Quarterback. I have quarterback a number six.
Speaker 7 (01:25:01):
The reason for that again some people say, Eric, you're
gonna look this sound real foolish.
Speaker 8 (01:25:06):
When Arch Manning is you know, heightened candidate.
Speaker 7 (01:25:08):
It's not number six as it doesn't have much to
do with Arch, although again he is a first time starter.
Speaker 8 (01:25:14):
It's the position room as a whole.
Speaker 7 (01:25:16):
You have kJ Lacey possibly again more than likely won't
be the QB two, but he could be, uh, you
know if something were to happen, hasn't played Trey Owens
still in experience. I think Trey has all the talent
in the world, hasn't played a ton And then of
course getting Matthew Holwell from Troy, who was a you know,
middle of the pack starter.
Speaker 8 (01:25:33):
In the Sun Belt with no respect to the Sun Belt.
Speaker 7 (01:25:34):
I covered group of five, but that wasn't This wasn't
a peak Banner year for some Belt quarterback.
Speaker 8 (01:25:39):
So that's why quarterback is at number six.
Speaker 1 (01:25:42):
Yeah, to your quarterback point, and I think I understand
like why people could get worked up over you know
where you have wide receiver offensive lineman, but it's the
you know, returning production. Texas is losing their three leading
receivers from last season, including gunnerh Helm offensive line. You're
replacing four starters quarterback outside of Arts Manning. You don't
really have anyone that's had you know, power for reps
(01:26:05):
at this level and you're playing in the SEC.
Speaker 2 (01:26:07):
I mean Owens.
Speaker 1 (01:26:08):
Yeah, sure, the talent and the ceiling for Tray Owens
and kJ Lacey is through the roof. But you know,
we've seen a lot, especially the quarterback position, where we
haven't had a season where the number one quarterback going
in the Week one for Steve Sarakjian has made it
through the year without getting injured. And that's why sark
went out and targeted De Troy quarterback and he talked
about it leave the Houston Touchdown Club and during his
spring media availabilities is that, Hey, the season is so
(01:26:30):
long and it's so grueling that there's likely at some
point Art is going to get nicked up. That's just
the way college football works. No one gets through the
entire season staying one hundred percent healthy. You know, as
just asked Quen you Weres that asked Hudson Carter Casey Thompson,
that that's just part and especially when you're playing in
an SEC conference. I mean, Week one's a while state,
that's going to be a very physical game, real quick.
(01:26:52):
From tight end, receiver, defensive tackle, and offensive line. Which
group do you think will move up this list the
most from the seas by the end of the year.
Speaker 7 (01:27:02):
Yeah, from those four and again I'll redo this midway
through camp and the right before the season starts. I
would go either wide receiver, offensive line. I think Trevor
Goosby the ceiling is really high.
Speaker 8 (01:27:15):
I think with.
Speaker 7 (01:27:15):
Wide receiver again, I think I'm just willing to see
how some of those young guys fill in. But Ryan Wingo,
I've been on the record, I'm saying this, Ryan Wingo
saws many targets as Ryan Williams of Jeremiah Smith. He
would be in that conversation right as far as stuff
freshman going into their sophomore year, so I said, one
of those.
Speaker 1 (01:27:30):
Two, there's that picture of the Alabama receivers, whereas what
Jaylen Waddle, Defonte Smith.
Speaker 2 (01:27:36):
Judy and and Harry Ruggs.
Speaker 1 (01:27:40):
I think we're gonna look back at this receiver class
in a couple of years eric in compare it to it,
especially with Wingo and DeAndre Moore, who I think are
fantastic receivers, just weren't on hundred percent healthy last season.
And in the class that Stark brought in with Lockett, French,
Livingstone and McCutcheon, I'm super excited. I think that'll be
the group that by the end of the year will
be like holy cow. They impressed, and Sark talked about it.
(01:28:02):
I think on Greg ncroy's show Always College Football, he
said the position group that's not getting allowed to talk
this season Ala hype has been the receiver group. And
Sark seems very confident. And we have you mentioned Emitt
Mosley the Stanford transfer.
Speaker 8 (01:28:14):
Correct.
Speaker 1 (01:28:15):
Okay, now your top four spots and number four did
surprise me here because for some people I've seen similar lists,
number four has been their number ten.
Speaker 7 (01:28:24):
It's interesting. Yeah, you talk about number four the running
back spot. I mean, look, all right, CJ. Baxter. We've
talked about him at Nauseum, Nation's former nations number one
overall recruit at the running back position. Everything we've heard
is that CJ's hitting the ground running. And here's the thing.
If the expectation was for him to be the running
back one, maybe I would have.
Speaker 8 (01:28:43):
The group down a little bit lower. But they're not
asking CJ. Baxter come in and carry a low Contriverion Wisner.
It's going to be the start at running back. But CJ.
Speaker 7 (01:28:51):
Baxter coming off of again a very serious knee injury.
But him at number two is the RB two. I'm
very comfortable with that. Quite frankly, I think that gives
him time to find his footing, to become a guy
gets you know, six to nine carries to maybe you know,
nine to twelve, nine to fourteen carries, and then you
take a look at the guy Jarrett Gibson and James
Simon wearing great things about those guys as well.
Speaker 8 (01:29:10):
So that's why I have number four there.
Speaker 7 (01:29:12):
And again the reason I said that the position rankings
relative relative to the rest of the team I think
one through three you have not just you know, great
on the team, but arguably tops in the conference or
tops in the nation. I would take Texas linebacker duo
in a two linebacker base of Anthony Hill and the
angela foul over any linebacking duo in the nation. When
you go three linebackers and you possibly have a Trey
(01:29:33):
More or a Brad Spence or a ty Anthony Smith,
I would be still as a static about that edge.
I think Colin Simmons is going to wreck college football
quite frankly, Cam I think when you talk about guys
in recent history, and I'm not one who engages in,
you know, being hyperbolic, I think you're talking about Genevian Clowney.
I think you're talking about Terrell Suggs. I think you're
(01:29:54):
talking about Julius Peppers. As far as guys in the
last twenty five years of college football who can wreck
the game, my Colin Simmons Ken and then of course
we have Trey Moore and Ethan Burke and others on
the edge there, and then safety Michael taff someone who
hasn't got enough love throughout his career. Jelani McDonald will
see whether he's gonna be a star or safety. But
you have Xavier Phils and me, Jordan Johnson, Rubell and
(01:30:15):
others very high on that safety room.
Speaker 1 (01:30:17):
Yeah, with running back list, I think my only concern
is just the health of it. You know, we've heard
talk about c J. Baxter. You know they're not gonna
They're not gonna put him out there until he's ready
to go. So he may not be out there in Columbus,
but all it takes is one injury. And I love
Jared Gibson, baby Rhinald, but the question is, you know
Candy hold on to the football. So if Gibson can
take that next step up and you tell me that
(01:30:38):
Clark and Baxter will be healthy, then I feel good
about this running back room. But for me, a lot
of question marks going in in your number one through
three spots. I think you can you can rotate linebacker, safety, edge,
all all three of those could be number one. And
I think by the end of the season, I mean
Anthony Hill, Colin Simmons, Michael taff I think will be
all sec possibly all Americans, and then the same thing for
(01:31:01):
Trey More.
Speaker 2 (01:31:02):
I think Ethan Burke can have a standout year, and.
Speaker 1 (01:31:04):
There's a lot of just unproven, but a lot of
guys that I don't think a lot of maybe casual
fans know about. You mentioned Aliona McDonald will get to
in a second, but Jill and Gilbo, who has been
injured so much through his career. Now, I think playing
cornerback will Simmy, you know he was was he? I
think he's a five star coming out of high school.
Was a five star. Yeah, so there's the talent there.
And then ty Anthony Smith. We've heard Sark talk about
a couple of times he made some big plays last
(01:31:26):
season because there was just so much depth there. So
looking forward to seeing these guys out there, looking forward
to seeing how your list changes throughout the season. Okay,
last thing year, Real Quick your football expanded production series
on Horns two four seven and two four seven sports
dot Com. You mentioned Eliona McDonald. This is the guy
that I think can kind of be the utility Knight
for Steve Sarkisian in PK's defense in twenty twenty five.
Speaker 7 (01:31:49):
Yeah, so I did this expanded production series because of
course with Texas having graduated and set, you know, double
digit guys in the NFL. The last two years. Again,
a lot of guys who haven't played starter level snaps.
Donald played in just over four hundred snaps last ers
mean just under four into snaps last year you saw
flashes of it. So basically just trying to project what
that player could look like if they play Star War
(01:32:11):
level snaps, whether that is at the Star or at safety.
Speaker 8 (01:32:13):
As you said, Cam kind.
Speaker 7 (01:32:14):
Of a Swiss Army knife and I think he can
be moved around. I think he is a guy as
a dime linebacker excellent. I mean he could have a
and again I'm not trying to, you know, be hyperpolic
a Jatte Baron like season in terms of being at
the Star. Someone who can make eight nine tackles for
loss just due to his physicality is tackling ability at
the line of scrimmage while also being a playmaker in
(01:32:35):
the secondary. Point two, want to look right with each
of these guys we profile. There's one game where you
get a little glimpse into that sample size. Go watch
the Vandy game. That was the game that Andrew mccooba
couldn't go. Julia McDonald the step in and get his
first career start, recorded a career high seven tackles, one
tackle for a loss was in on a myriad of plays.
Also another guy we're gonna spot like Kobe Black, also
(01:32:56):
got some crucial playing time in that game as well
some else we can't talk about in the secondary. So
Julian and McDonald just trying to do a little projection.
He also at arch and said we I also projected
arch Manning. We expanded his production as well. So go
check it out.
Speaker 8 (01:33:08):
Take a look. Got Jeli McDonald arch Manning up there.
Speaker 7 (01:33:10):
We'll do Kobe Black, Trevor Gouspian, probably one more before
Faull Campbell, and.
Speaker 1 (01:33:14):
I believe McDonald he played a lot of linebacker in
his high school career too, Am I wrong on that?
Speaker 7 (01:33:18):
Who's a jack of all trades, a little bit of linebacker,
played some corner play corner as well.
Speaker 8 (01:33:22):
So yeah, a guy who was moved around a lot.
Speaker 1 (01:33:24):
And we didn't even mention Derek Williams junior, who's coming
off that season corrending injury I think right for the
Oklahoma game. So this is a Texas defense. You think
it's going to be top five in the country this season,
top three, top three.
Speaker 8 (01:33:37):
That's the top top five is low balling into my
mind top three of us.
Speaker 2 (01:33:41):
Okay, last thing here.
Speaker 1 (01:33:43):
I think next time i'll see you will be next
week in Atlanta, the SEC Media Days. What are you
looking forward to? What storylines are you going to be
watching for next weekend? Besides of course Arch Manning walking
through those hallways at the College Football Hall of Fame, I'm.
Speaker 7 (01:33:56):
Super interested to see where the rest of the pack
come in. Right of course, we got to see how
Georgia reloads cause or to beat the man, you gotta
beat the man. You know, the Bulldogs beat Texas twice
last year. When I say the rest of the pack,
oh you Brent Venables. They're betting on a lot of things,
was notably John Mattier and Ben Arbuckle coming over to
trying to revamp that offense. I want to see what's
going on with the Sooners Auburn, they're trying to revamp
(01:34:18):
things with Jackson Arld. Want to see what's going on
there Florida, DJ Lagway, some of the what ifs in
terms of quarterback. Definitely want to see what's going on there.
And then away from SEC Media Days, you know, just
going to find some wings. As I typically am going
to try to avoid if you know the story, you
know how will again win trouble avoid the seafood case
of do you stick with the wings?
Speaker 8 (01:34:36):
That is my food recommendation for Atlanta.
Speaker 1 (01:34:39):
He is Eric c Henry. I always take up way
too much of his time. I appreciate your time, brother,
looking forward to seeing you in Atlanta. And check him
out on Twitter at Eric c Henry Underscore and follow
his work at Horns two four seven in two four
seven sports dot com. Hey enjoy Florida and I'll see
you in Hotlanta next week.
Speaker 2 (01:34:55):
Brother Wench, you appreciate my man. Take care of camp
all right.
Speaker 1 (01:34:58):
We'll be back to continue out three of the day's
program here on the free iHeartRadio app.
