Speaker 3 (00:19):
Back here on this long orange Monday, here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen nundreds, and we were hearing from coach sart.
I want to hear a little more from him this hour,
then we'll hear some more next hour. It was just
about the physicality of his team, and uh, does he
feel as though his team has become much more physical
on both sides of the line of scrimmage since the
(00:41):
Georgia game.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Really and truly over the last month.
Speaker 4 (00:43):
I think it's gone upward. I think from an upward
from a consistency standpoint. I think we've had moments or
we've been a very physical football team. But you guys
can recall early in the season me talking about we're
giving up too many leaky yards in the run game,
you know.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
And we talked about on on.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
Defense, and we talked about on offense, you know, our
ability to run the ball consistently, especially when our opponent
knows we're going to run the ball. You haven't heard
those things out of my mouth here for about the
last month.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
You know, we haven't.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
I've been talking about leaky yards in the run game
and letting running backs fall forward. I haven't been talking
about our inability to run it when our opponents know
we're going to run it. So I think there's been
a level of consistency in our physicality that that has grown,
and I think that stems from practice. Our practice habits
have improved as the season's gone on. We're practicing better
(01:32):
defensively than we have all year. I touched on a
couple weeks about ago about how physical practice has been
and even the chippiness at practice, which I think again
is a great sign that we have the energy to
do that. But I think all those are byproducts of
why we're seeing a level of physicality for four quarters
from our guys, not just kind of in spots where
(01:52):
maybe we were early in the year. I think it's
there's a level of consistency now that's better than it's
been all season long.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Okay, there's He was also asked as well about managing that.
Here's another one of those portal questions. Managing the portal
a little more strenuously because the season is ongoing.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
How you deal with that.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
And also as for an update on Kelvin Banks who
had the ankle injury.
Speaker 4 (02:24):
That is a challenging component. You know, there's it's like
I used to say that I use this term, you know,
it's kind of like crying from a yacht. Some people
use champagne problems. We're we're a competing for an SEC championship,
We're more than likely going to be in the college
(02:45):
football playoff.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
And yes, is.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
It a little bit of a disadvantage when it comes
to dealing with the portal, Sure, but I'd much rather
be I'd much rather this be my problem than a
team that isn't competing for a conference championship, maybe isn't
going to a bowl game or going to a lesser
bowl and saying, hey, I got all the time in
the world to recruit all these portal guys, you know,
so I'll take the situation we're in compared to to
(03:10):
the to the ladder.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Knowingly that we don't make a living in the portal.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
You know, we try to recruit high school kids because
we develop relationships with them over time. We understand there
is some advantage to the portal from a free agency
standpoint to stop gap some of the depth issues we
might have on our roster. But we probably don't spend
as much time on the portal as a lot of
other schools do because of our commitment to the high
(03:36):
school recruiting. But again, again, I'd much rather have this
problem right now than than the ladder.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
So we'll take the situation that we're in. You know,
Kelvin really is in a situation that I guess kind
of similar to Quinn.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
It's gonna it's gonna kind.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Of be a process throughout the week to see what
he can look like as we get closer to game day.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
But it was a good start to the week for him,
all right.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
So I didn't asked about might they continue to open
up the playbook even more? Have they opened it completely up?
And does that include more perhaps of seeing a little
more of arge banding.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
We might. I don't know.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
I don't I I would say no, we haven't fully
opened our playbook because you know, as a staff, we
sit around and we think about our roster, and we
think about our team, and we think about what we're
good at, and we think about where we can improve,
and we're going to run stuff Saturday that we haven't
ran all year because of who we are as a
(04:38):
team now and finding new ways to try to move
the football and create issues for our opponents.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
And so you know, there's always things that we're going
to do that are new.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
And I think that that the beauty of these guys
offensively is that they really accept that stuff and like, Okay,
here's why we're doing it, So let's make sure we
get this this aspect right.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
And so.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
I don't know, you know, I mean, we did wildcat
there for about three years, and that was a big
part of what we did with Roshan, and that we
threw arch in here on a couple opportunities here in
the high red to get into some quarterback run stuff
and we've gotten into twenty one personnel and utilize blue
and Tray together, and so we're constantly trying to evolve
that stuff. We did some tackle over things in this
(05:20):
game that we hadn't shown much of throughout the year.
So you're always trying to find little tweaks and things
to find some advantages along the way. So I'm sure
there'll be a few new wrinkles this Saturday as well.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
All right, And then he was asked about the Long
Runs playing well in hostile environments in all. In all,
the Long Runs now have one eleven consecutive road games,
eleven straight road games.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
So how has that men?
Speaker 3 (05:49):
How have they been so good on the road, and
how have they been so good in hostile environments?
Speaker 1 (05:53):
I really think so.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
You know, our guys love I think they kind of
embrace it.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
You know, they embrace being together.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
They embrace knowing, hey, they're not running out of DKR
and there's one hundred and five thousand burn Orange fans
screaming and yelling for them.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
They kind of embrace and get fueled by the booze
and and the crowd noise. On the road.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
When you're on offense, you have to really focus, and
sometimes that helps us focus even better. You know, I've
looked at all of our numbers. I feel like we
have more false starts at home than we do them
we're actually on the road, because it forces our focus,
it forces the communication. But I do think our guys
embrace it and enjoy it. It's been a journey to
get to that point, but we've gone into some tough
(06:35):
environments and played pretty good football. I would argue some
of our best football over the last two years has
been played on the road, and so it does give
me a lot of confidence knowing, hey, you know, essentially
going on the road, what it's going to take to
try to come out on top.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
Okay, well we'll hear a little more from Start coming
up next hour as well the Tech since men's and
women's basketball teams go back on the road this week
and both with challenges. The Long Worn men went on
Friday night against Delaware State and now have won six
(07:13):
in a row after dropping their season opener. So they're
six and one heading into the SEC. Well, I guess
they should say the ACC SEC challenges. ACC is at home.
They're going to play a North Carolina State team that
is five and two. Remember NC State reached the Final
four a year ago. Now they graduated some players off
of that, but they still have some good players like
(07:35):
Ben Middlebrooks, Marcus Hill, Jayden Taylor's their leading scorer, a
guy who transferred in from Butler, Dontrest Styles transferred in
from Georgetown, Brandon Huntley Hatfield transferred in from Louisville. Middlebrooks
transferred income from Clemson. So they've got some transfers they've
really helped to Michael O'Connell, the grad student guard started
(07:58):
off at Stanford. So there's those guys. They average seventy
six points a game and they give up sixty five
a game the Long Wars. Right now, we're averaging eighty
three and allowing sixty two. This will be the first
time Texas has played North Carolina State. Here's that number
again in thirteen years. In fact, the last time that
Texas played nca State was three days before Texas played
(08:22):
Texas A and M in that climactic football game where
they won on the Justin.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Tucker Field goal.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
They played in East Rutherford, New Jersey in the Ticket
City Legends Classic and lost the NC State that night,
seventy seven to seventy fourth. Series overalls tied to two
between Texas and NCAA State. And then the Texas women
will play at Notre Dame. That is also sec ACC
SEC Challenge since Notre Dame it plays basketball in the ACC.
(08:51):
Notre Dane was unbeaten and then stumbled after knocking off
South Carolin lost a couple of games in the Islands.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
They have not played Notre Dame since the last year.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Before I started doing the play by play, it was
to ninety six ninety seven season. March seventeen, nineteen ninety seven.
It was in a second round in see A tournament
game at the Irwin Center, Notre Dame in Texas. You
know what the wrinkle on that was Cam. The play
by play voice for Texas women's basketball that year was
none other than our good friend, the late immortal Bill Little,
(09:29):
And the color analyst for that game was John mckovic.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Texas was was coming off.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
The high of winning the Big twelfth title over Nebraska,
and so Macovick had nothing going on, and Bill and
vided to be on, and he was on.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
He did color for the game.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
That's the last time Texas played Notre Dame in women's basketball.
We'll be back to wrap a bower Number two on
