Speaker 1 (00:00):
Mark Vandermere, played by play voice of the Houston Texans
for joining us there, and he said he loved ambrosia,
so we throw back with a roll back here with
a little more ambrosia here with you're the only woman there.
So yeah, So going to that tomorrow night, so we'll
see that. Somebody mentioned on the text line he said
(00:20):
Journey nineteen eighty three. Brian Adams was the opening act.
I still left the T shirt. It's a little snug
these days. I sold those T shirts that went on
the on the road with Journey. We did City Park
Stadium in New Orleans because they couldn't come to an
agreement with the Superdome, so it was outdoor venue on
the fourth of July pouring rain. But we did that Albuquerque,
(00:43):
New Mexico, Dallas, Houston, Norman, Oklahoma, which a daw Kansas,
Vegas for three nights at the Aladdin Theater, Let's see,
and then up into the Pacific northwest to Poka Tella, Idaho,
(01:04):
and Boise, Idaho. When we were in Pocatello, Brian Adams
Uh was the lead act and he was a real
he was just getting started and he was a real
down to earth guy. This is how down to earth
Brian Adams was. When we flew from New Orleans to Dallas,
Me and the the other three guys that I worked
with on my particular crew with this with the T
(01:25):
shirt vending thing working for the band. Uh, Brian Adams
flew with us on Southwest Airlines. This is you know,
he became a mega rock star, but he was just
starting out then. That was when his first album and
cuts like an Ikea and all that. And he was
sitting on the sitting on the plane with us and
just regular guy chatting with us. By the time we
(01:46):
got to Pokatella, Idaho, Uh, he had seen a few
things and and uh was pretty pretty loose with his
conversation to the extent that he got up on stage
opening up for Journey and what was then called the
Mini Dome's It's one of those old fashioned older dome stadiums.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
It was concrete.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
It looks like an airplane hangar seats like fifteen thousand,
and they would hang the goal post for the football
team Idaho State plays at home football games there. They'd
hang up from cables from the season the ceiling. There
was no bottom bar that went up to the crossbar
and it would just hang from the ceiling like that.
We saw that at both ends. I always remember that.
(02:29):
And it was called the Mini Dome back then. It's
got a corporate name on it now. But he was
up there and he gets on stage. He goes, Poka,
tell Idah, how about you spud Butts? Hey, spud Butt
And people were kind of like, kind of like is
he kidding or what? But yeah, Brian Adams was the
opening act. So there you go. So anyway, that was
(02:56):
some memories there, and like I said, we're going to
see and let's hear some more from long words. Basketball
coach Rodney Terry, who's asked about a couple of guys,
including Jason Kent, is another guy that they're pretty excited
about in his development.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Yes, Ed, I'll tell you what you know. Jason Kent.
You know we've known his dad a long time. Dad
was a.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Was was a coach here at Houston Jellison at one time.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Mom worked on our campus at one.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Time as well, so very familiar with with the forty acres.
He himself, going on, played a couple of years at Bradley,
played the last two years in Indiana State. But he's
one of those guys again that can make an open shot.
He's an elite cutter, you know, we pride ourselves to
being a really good cutting team. He's a space that
got floor guy, really good offensive rebounder, you know, has
(03:49):
a body to play physical and get up and down
the floor, you know, and stuff. So I think he
brings that along with obviously a lot of experience as well,
you know, and and hopefully the guy that wants to
continue to try to play with the chip on the shoulder.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Now, one thing that coaches always stress and they talk
about quite a bit is rebounding. The the art, the science,
the effort, everything about rebounding. And Kirk bowls from the
Austin American instead way it used to be the Austin
American Station now the Houston Chronicle. Kirk asked Roddy about rebounding.
Does he want to see more out of his guys
in terms of, you know, crashing the boards and getting
(04:24):
to the glass and getting rebounds this season.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
I think every team in the country goes into the
year worrying about rebounding. Because what makes you a great team,
makes you a great team, you got to be a
team that takes care of the basketball. You don't beat yourselves, right,
So value and taking care of the basketball. Physical mindset
that allows you to play physical, all five guys blocking out,
rebounding down, you know. You know, we want to try
(04:48):
to play fast as well, where every time down we
want to want to get a shot. But and then
you know, obviously having a really good defense, you know,
and a big part of having a really good defense
and finishing possessions.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Is being able to block out. So you know, we
work at it.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
We've got a great strength coach that's really done a
great job with our guys body over the course of
the summer to hope they give them a mindset to
come out and have application on the floor to play physical.
You know, when that shot goes up, you look to
hit somebody. If you don't get the rebound, your man
doesn't get.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
It, you know, and stuff.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
So a lot of times it's not the biggest team
we could roll out. You know, three or four or
five seven footers does no good for us, right, It's
what's in your chest in terms of if you want
to do it. Can't you want to play physical? It
doesn't matter what size you are, you know what I mean?
We got good size, you know and stuff. But I
do think that, you know, on the perimeter, we've got
good size. I think our guards are rebound down really
(05:41):
well for us, and that'll be a plus for us
because we'll be able to get up and down the
floor and play fast the way we want to.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
All right, And then there were a couple of questions
about this new world that the log Worts are going into,
into the Southeastern Conference. One of the questions asked point
blank was did he feel that the Big twelve is
a better basketball league than the SEC? Because the Big
twelve is, you know, it's got some good basketball programs
(06:09):
in it, and it's made some runs. And so it
was asked thing that the SEC is behind the Big
twelve conference in terms of basketball and Rodney was saying,
absolutely not.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
I think the SEC, you know, obviously has great leadership
with Greg thank He's done a great job came really
building up the profile of the SEC from top to bottom,
and no Knights. All great coaches, really good venues to
play in, and really good players in the SEC. So
(06:38):
they put eight teams in the tournament the last two
years in the Big Twelve, you know, we had eight
teams in the tournament this past year. We had seven
the year before, So you know, there's no drop off
in the SEC. Man, We're right at the top and
one of the.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
Best leagues in the country on basketball.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Stam one okay, and then one other thing about the
SEC and just kind of diving into what the sky
els of play and Rodnie was asked, if do you
notice anything appreciably different about how the SEC goes about
its business and playing as opposed to the Big twelve?
Speaker 3 (07:09):
Well, they think again, if you if you really get
down to it now, you're talking about you know what.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Translates in the NCAA tournament.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
You know, is the Big twelve more physical than the SEC?
You know who files the most right when you when
you get to the NCAA tournament.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
You know, I think you start looking at those kind
of things.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
But I think there are teams in the SEC that
play extremely physical. I mean, we played Tennessee the last
three years and been easily probably the most physical team
we've played on our schedule, you.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Know, and everything.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
So you know, I think there's you know, on any
given night, you're gonna have to deal with some physicality.
You have to deal with teams that could you know,
push the ball really fast in transition the teams that
can really score the ball.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
Yeah, And as a result of that, they played Tennessee again.
Now in conference play, Tennessee will come to Austin for
one game after they have played them in some price
years and that Hey, I want to do something before
we get to the break here. Last week, all week long,
we gave away opportunities, opportunities to win a pair of
(08:12):
