Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the program here on Sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
My name is Craig Way. Thank you very much for
joining us.

Speaker 1 (00:08):
I always say this, you know, hey, look, you know,
depending on what day of the week you're working, when
your work week starts. If you're a Monday to Friday person,
you know you got Thursday this afternoon and then Friday,
and hey, you got a weekend coming up, and good.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
For you and good on you.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
If that's not the case, hopefully we can help guide
you through the remaining portions of your work week before
you do get to your quote unquote weekend or whatever
your day's off may be. Us and we also refers
to the producer now, Cameron Parker, Cameron D.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Parker. The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas
as in honor.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Of his dad's favorite pro football team and Cameron's, even
though he's disavowing them right now, that Dallas Cowboys, and
there was some ambiguity in a recent family gathering in
North Carolina last week about why, indeed was Dallas chosen
as his middle name. There seems to be some murkiness
around all that, but for the moment. Anyway, since it's

(01:04):
officially on his birth certificate, we go by Dallas. Having
said all that, Cameron's not here today. You see I
mentioned the family stuff. He's got some big Mondo family reunion.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Thing on it.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
That's not true. He has some family in town this week.
He was in North Carolina last week for some family business.
He has family in town this weekend. So he's out
today and tomorrow. But we're very pleased to have Cole Dixon,
the pride of the Bay Area, joining us here behind

(01:36):
the microphone.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
I've asked you this question before.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
In your time that you've spent here in the Greater Austin,
Central Texes area, having grown up in the Bay Area,
how long did it take you to get really comfortably
a justice adjusted to what life in Texas is a
and in a Texas summertime.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
It wasn't super It didn't take long because I was
in Dallas before this, and I have family in Houston,
so it didn't take long. And I enjoy the hot weather.
I just don't like to be cold, okay, but it's
it's preferable for me for it to be hot. That way,
you can go to the river, go to the Lake, Sure,
out doors, I prefer the hot.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Uh So, you've lived in both Dallas and Houston. Yeah,
I was in Dallas for about a year, and Houston.
I would go there a couple of times to see
my uncle.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Oh got it.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Dallas, Houston, Austin. You don't have to say it just
because you live here now. But which of the three
did you wind up preferring.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
I've always said I won't live in Houston, but there
is something.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
Especially like a native Texan from from anywhere in the
lone Star State other than Houston.

Speaker 3 (02:40):
Yeah, I can see myself eventually going to Dallas. But
I do enjoy the Austin Okay, Yeah, for sure, especially
South Austin where I'm at. There's always something to do
and whatnot. But I haven't been to Dallas in a while,
but I do want to go back. But you know,
it's one of those if I have a reason to go,
i'll go.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Yeah. Nothing, they stay here maybe, Okay, all right, very good,
very good?

Speaker 1 (03:03):
Uh So Cole Dick's and our producer this afternoon, let
me tell you what we have coming up. A recap
of what a bizarre ending the last night's College World
Series game, and some thoughts about blame assessment. Uh, well,
we'll get to that coming up. We have Inconceivable later
this hour, which includes a fast food junk food update

(03:25):
and just a restaurant update on something some some stuff
you need to do. So that's that's that's coming up
in Inconceivable then three o'clock hour. We normally do this
on Friday in the summertime. We brought back the music
survey this year. And for those of you haven't heard
or don't even know what the music survey is all about,

(03:46):
it was something that we did three years ago when
we were across town at the Yellow Place, and I
got it from my friends George Dunhaman and Craig Miller,
who do the morning show the Musers on the Ticket
in Dallas, and I first heard them doing it three
years ago. And it's a series of questions that that
we rotate around our staff and they give us the

(04:09):
answers to them, and almost all the questions begin with
band or artist. I uh so you do that. And
and then also we have some people who are not
in the building as regular staff members or whatever, like

(04:29):
Roger Wallace took the survey last week. We'll have some
other people who don't work here, but people in these
parts who listen to radio or watch television or whatever
enjoy having them. So they will, they will, they'll join
us as well. So today, keeping it in house and

(04:52):
in staff, three o'clock hour, Mike Hardball, Harge takes the
music survey. Now, Harje did it with us three years
ago across town. But it's good you have a different take.
I think Cameron did it three years ago. Then when
he did it two weeks ago, he had a refreshed,
updated view of the music survey and how it affected

(05:15):
and affects him, and I think Harge is in the
same boat.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
He'll join us on three o'clock hour.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
Normally we do it on Friday, but Harge is headed
up for a basketball tournament with his son this weekend
and he's headed up tomorrow. So Mike Hardball, Harge takes
the music survey, and that is coming up in the
three o'clock hour.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
So we look forward to bring you that.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
As always, we invite your questions, your comment, your thoughts
on our text line. You text the word Texas followed
by your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
So you text the word Texas follow by your question
or comment to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging
and data rates may apply. All right, I wanted to
begin with the College World Series because it is down

(06:00):
to the National Championship matchup. Now the pairing is complete,
and it'll begin on Saturday night, and incidentally, tomorrow on
the program, our college Baseball analysten broadcast partner, Ty Harrington,
the coach, will be on with us in the four
o'clock hour with a preview of this National Championship series.

(06:23):
He knows both of these teams very very well, and
so I I will join us tomorrow to talk about that.
Also tomorrow we'll talk Major League Baseball with Jeene Watson
from the Chicago White Sox front office.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
So that is all coming up tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (06:37):
But with regard to this National Championship matchup, if you
did not hear about how the Arkansas LSU game wound up,
you may have only heard that LSU won the game.
You may have even heard they wanted on a walk off.
And so the National Championship pairing is now set. It'll
be the number six overall seed LSU against the number

(07:00):
thirteen overall seed Coastal Carolina. Coastal qualified yesterday or yeah,
yesterday as well as they eliminated Louisville, and both Coastal
and LSU have gone unscathed throughout their time in Omaha.

(07:21):
So that's why they get two days off today and tomorrow.
And I would imagine that both teams, even though they
get a day off today, I would imagine both teams
are probably they have an off site practice. The twelve
times that I've been there, I remember Texas going to

(07:42):
high school field on the south side of Omaha and
working out there. I've seen LSU do that already. I've
seen practice footage and things like that, so I imagine
they're doing that today. They'll each have I believe, a
workout on the field tomorrow at Charles Schwab Field the

(08:03):
schwab As I like to call it. So I think
they'll they'll have that tomorrow. But anyway, how do they
get there?

Speaker 2 (08:08):
Well?

Speaker 1 (08:09):
As I mentioned, Coastal Carolina has been pretty impressive and
in winning its three game to beat Arizona, they beat
Oregon State and then they beat Louisville to get there.
LSU defeated Arkansas last Saturday, came back and then defeated
UCLA in a Winter's bracket game that got continued from

(08:31):
Monday night to Tuesday morning, and then yesterday or last
night took on Arkansas again, which fought its way through
the elimination bracket and had eliminated first Murray.

Speaker 2 (08:46):
State and then UCLA. So the game.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
Started off with Arkansas jumping out to a one nothing lead.

Speaker 2 (08:59):
They they got a home run to jump up one nothing.

Speaker 1 (09:04):
Then it was tied at one, and then LSU took
a two.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
To one lead in the game.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
And then Arkansas came up in the bottom of or
the top of the eight I guess it was the
top of the eighth inning. LSU had grabbed a three
to two lead. Arkansas comes up in the top of

(09:37):
the ninth Justin Thomas had a tie breaking single and
and so Arkansas ended up scoring three runs in the inning.
They wound up going up five to three in the game.
So they were up five to three going to the
bottom half of the ninth inning. And so LSU comes

(10:01):
to bat in the bottom half of the ninth inning,
and it started off with a ground ball that was
booted or an error made by the first baseman for Arkansas,
so it put a runner on first. Then I believe
there was a walk afterwards, and you had runners at

(10:25):
first and second, and then there was an out recording,
so the runners at first and second, one out, bottom
of the ninth, Arkansas's leading five to three. Then there
was a ground ball from Steven Mylem that went to
short the EVA Alloy Outstanding Player, the short stop for

(10:51):
Arkansas almost certainly is going to be a first round
draft pick, and in some draft analyses may even be
a top ten pick. Certainly a first round pick SEC
Player of the Year Outstanding player, and he'd had a
really good college World Series up to this moment. Ground

(11:12):
balls hit to Theheva Aloi. It looks for all the
world as though it is a tailor made six' four
to three double play that's gonna end the. Ballgame arkansas
is gonna, win and then they're gonna have to the
two teams going to play one more time today to
decide who's gonna go. There but for whatever, Reason alloi

(11:35):
did not throw the second to start a six four
to three double. Play he decided to go to third
to get the lead runner, out so that meant out number.
Two but everybody analyst than the booth, Afterwards scott van

(11:56):
Pelt on ON espn On Sports. Center those of us
watching people, go why in the world did he not
go to second to start a six four to three double.
Play he clearly had plenty of, time and it almost
certainly went because when you think about, it the runner
at third really means. Nothing it was a two run
lead For. Arkansas so even if he only gets one

(12:17):
out at second and then don't get the relay to,
first you've got runners on the corners with two, outs
there's still one out of, way and the runner of
third again means. Nothing it's that guy at first that
makes all the difference in the. World so now you
have runners at first and second with two. Down da
Van horn said in the press, conference he's The arkansas head.
Coach that QUOTE i talked to him About Veava, lloyd

(12:37):
by the, way was not made available.

Speaker 2 (12:38):
For the postgame news.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
Conference make of that way you, will But da Van
horn SAID i talked to him about. It he felt
he moved too far to his right to turn. It
but as a couple of an analyst, said his body was.
Turned it would have even been an easier throwed a
second than the, third but because he was closer to the.
Bag he turns and he throws to third in time

(13:00):
get the lead runner. There so you have runners at
first and. Second there are now two, down so there's
still one out away from winning. It and at that
Point Louis hernandez comes to the plate and sends a
sinking liner to. Left Charles davilon is the left, fielder
and he comes, in looks like he's got a beat on,
it and he slipped right as he was breaking in

(13:22):
toward the ball and it kind of hit the glove
and went off his right. Shoulder At Ricochete dablon had
to chase the ball, down But Ethan fry And Stephen
mylein bow scored and the game was. Tied Van horne
said it was hit, hard obviously and was hooking and.
Sinking it looked Like charles slip taking off for. Him
when he took, off he lost sight of. It then

(13:44):
comes the other inexplicable. Decision at that, point the leading,
slugger the leading hitter Is Jared Jones Bear there is
a lot of them call. Him Jared jones comes to the.
Plate he had been four for eight with five RBIs
and two home runs going into that. Bat into that,

(14:06):
bat now, remember because the ball went Off davlon's, glove
he uh The at that, Point hernandez is standing at second.
Base first base is, open and again they're one that
went out a. Way so here is the leading hitter
and for whatever, Reason Da Van horne decided not to
intentionally walk. It it would have mattered about him being

(14:28):
at first. Base in, fact it would have set up
a forced play at second if they would have needed,
it because it's only the runner at second that matters
at that point since it's a tie ball. Game but
they elected to pitch to, him and when they, did
he ripped a line shot off of the glove of

(14:50):
the second baseman for the winning. Run AND lsu gets
a walk off six to. Five so it was amazing
that it went that way AND lsu. Wins, now a
couple of thoughts before we take the. Break couple of
thoughts here in examining social media both after the game

(15:12):
last night again this, morning depending on what your affiliation,
is if you're you, know Anti arkansas or pro l
S u or Pro, tennessee they were weighing in on.
FANS i didn't really see Any texas fans weighing in on.

Speaker 2 (15:27):
This maybe one or.

Speaker 1 (15:27):
Two but the avalanche of social social media responses came
from Either arkansas fans OR lsu, Fans and you, know
there's a lot of blaming going. On certainly at the
top of the list Is, alloy THE Sec player of The,
YEAR a for not doing the common sense thing and

(15:49):
starting the six four to three double play that would
have ended the.

Speaker 2 (15:52):
Ballgame AND.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
B he also got a lot of criticism for not
being in the press conference to own it after the.
Game let me let me tell you that that was
probably a decision made By arkansas to their media relations
not to bring him in on, that and your opinion
on that can. Differ there's a lot of folks that,

(16:15):
said you, know he should have manned up and been
there for, It arkansas shouldn't have media relations should not
have shielded him from all. That but you, know depending to,
me that's neither here nor there at this, point because
what would have happened if he'd gone into the news
conference would would be because Everything i've heard about this
guy is he's he's really a stand up.

Speaker 2 (16:36):
Guy he probably would have said it's on. ME i
made a.

Speaker 1 (16:41):
MISTAKE i THOUGHT i needed to get the runner at
THIRD i have to own it. Now it probably been
something really simple by that and people would have moved.
On but he wasn't, there all, Right so there was, that,
uh and then and then and and a lot of
the blame comes back and, forth you, know and BETWEEN

(17:02):
lsu fans And arkansas, fans and Then tennessee fans were
chiming in and. Chirping and in the middle of all
of this is the reminder That arkansas has never won
a national championship in, baseball and they've had two. Chances
when they were in The National Championship series in nineteen seventy,
nine they lost to a Cal State fuller ten team

(17:24):
coach By Augie garrido in seventy, nine and then who
can forget seven years, ago twenty, eighteen they're one out
away from winning. It they'd won game won Against Oregon.
State they drop a pop up and foul ground with
two outs in the, night would have won the. Game
given a second. Life Oregon state ties the, game they
win an extra, innings and then they win the final

(17:45):
game to win the whole. Thing so there's this undercurrent
also Of arkansas's. Cursed there's all this other. Stuff hoggy
gonna hoggy all that other kind of stuff that comes
down about. That you feel, bad certainly for the. Players
davilon was in console will after the game and just
the left, fielder but he just slipped the ball came.
In physical errors do, happen and it's a shame off

(18:10):
of that for. Them but it's good FOR lsu and
so NOW lsu will Play Coastal carolina for The National.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
Championship it was an, amazing.

Speaker 1 (18:19):
You, know almost incomprehensible ending to the, game but that
but that's how it did end last. Night and baseball
is going to do that. Sometimes it'll have that crazy
effect to, it including in The College World series and
again Tomorrow Ty harrington will join us and we'll talk
more about. It all, Right we've GOT nba notes to get,
to after. All tonight Is game six of THE Nba.
Finals will The Oklahoma City thunder win its first ever

(18:42):
world title or will The Indiana pacers force A game.
Seven we'll talk about that coming. Up i'm thirteen under The.
