Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Andrews im Will
filling in for the legendary Craig Way on the access line.
Right now is our friend Craig Way and Cameron Dee
Parker from the City that Never sleeps, right, guys is
Las Vegas, Nevada. How you guys doing out there?
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Well, I got my sleep last night. Oh good.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
I don't know about the I don't know about Cam
here he said he saw Eddie Warren in the high
limit room.
Speaker 4 (00:24):
You know, they were vacuuming underneath his feet when I
saw him.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
So so you know, we got our sleep.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Team got in late yesterday afternoon, Andrew and had a
practice here last night. We were here for that, and
then there was a team dinner after that, and then
it was there was a film session.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
A team was going through.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Some things and kind of the ball from the ballroom,
walked through stuff, the academic side of it. And right
now as we they're on the floor right now running
through their shoot around, running through some stuff. This is
I was in this arena four years ago when Texas
played here. The men and women were in it, involved
(01:11):
in a double header and Texas beat Stanford and the
women beat San Diego. The two most notable things and
were about that particular UH doubleheader four years ago UH
one uh. Not long after the plane landed on Friday,
Eddie Orrin felt poorly got tested on Saturday YEP tested
(01:32):
positive for COVID.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
I was flying in Sunday morning after calling state high
school football championships Saturday night in Arlington and Jerry World.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
So I flew in Sunday morning.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Eddie was already gone, and of course you know this
was uh, you know, nine months into it, I guess
you would say. And he obviously was not going to
be able to fly home with the team on the charter,
and he couldn't get a plane ticket. He had to
rent a car and drive home home feeling awful COVID pos.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
That took him two days to get home, but he did.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
And then the other noteworthy thing is is that both
the Texas men and women's teams were to have played Stanford.
It was a big twelve PAC twelve showdown series, and
the Stanford women had to bail out on contact tracing issues,
and Vic Schaefer and his staff just scrambled and scoured
(02:26):
to come up with an opponent on about twelve hours
notice or fourteen hours note.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
They got San Diego and the San Diego women came
in and.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Actually played Texas pretty tough in that, but both the
men and women won here. But this is a nice building.
It's Cameron Parker's first time in this building.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
You like this, You liked this building.
Speaker 4 (02:41):
It's nice and as you mentioned to me yesterday, it's
eerily similar to the Team Mobile Arena in Kansas City,
where Texas men's and women's basketball team played last year
in the Big Twelve. Actually technically it was this year
in mo was of March of the Big Twelve Conference tournament.
It's a beautiful facility. It's where the lot Vegas Golden
Knights play their hockey games.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
They won a Stanley Cuppen here Andrew the Vegas Golden
Knights did so. Yes, this is Temobile Arena T Mobile
Center in Kansas City.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
They're almost identical. They're very very similar.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
A lot of you know, T Mobile pink all over
the lace as well as they and the black.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
But the team's going through practice right now.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
Well, first off, I'm glad that we're not dealing with
contact tracing and COVID as much anymore. That's the first
big thing. The second thing I have to say is, Guys,
this Texas men's basketball team this year is like a
breadth of fresh air. Feels like this is like a
new meats, old type of thing. What can you tell
me about just the newness of this you know, newness
(03:39):
of the season, newness of this team.
Speaker 3 (03:42):
I think new is the operative phrase here, Andrew, because yes,
it is a breath of fresh air. And by the
same token, you could say it's a bit of a
box of chocolates. They've they've got so many new faces, betweenty.
I think it's what is it cam six returneys, six six.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
Portal guys and four freshmen.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
I believe it is uh so they've got They've got
a lot of new guys. He have two transfers UH
from Indiana State in Julian Larry and Uh also Jason
Kent Uh. They have Tremon Mark who's transferring in from Arkansas.
You have Arthur Kluoma Gosh who played against Texas when
(04:21):
he was playing for Creighton UH three years ago and
and now UH and then on to Kansas State, played
against Texas for k State last year and now was
suited up as a Longhorn and Malik Presley transferred in
from Vanderbilt. He's originally out of San Marcus High UH,
and so you have those guys, and then you've got
(04:43):
you gotta UH and Jordan Pope, who is pretty much
gonna be the point guard at least a lot of
the time, you know, from UH transfer from Oregon State.
So there's a lot of that, but UH, Andrew's a
lot of excitement obviously about the freshman Tray Johnson from
Garland and UH started off at Lake Highlands in the
Dalla fourth area as high school.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Career, finished at Link Academy in Missouri, and.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
There's there's a there's a palpable buzz around what Trey
Johnson has shown so far.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
And they're two scrimmages against TCU and Colorado.
Speaker 4 (05:12):
And the fun thing about Trey Johnson is Craig is
he we hear Rodny Terry compare him a lot to
Kevin Durant and hey, that's a big comparison. It's like
when kids coming out and they're saying it reminds me
of Aaron Donald, reminds me of Lebron James.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Let's calm down there. But his ability to shoot so far.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
I mean, we've seen it in the two practices and
it appears, you know, RT under Rick Barnes, Rick Barnes
kid Kevin Durant that green light, Craig as you well known,
and it seems like RT is going to give Trey
Johnson that same green light.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Yeah, And he showed some of that in the two scrimmages.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
You know, he went through what freshmen.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
Do, some some hot, some cold, some nice stuff, and
some slump stuff. So we'll see with regarding to him.
But but you're right, Andrew, there is it is kind
of a breath of fresh air and there's a lot
of excitements around in this team.
Speaker 1 (06:01):
Well, we talked about it on Friday a little bit.
We were playing a little of Rodney Terry's preseason last
media availability talking about the green light. Well, you guys
have seen the practices. Do you see the green light?
Do you see the guys who are already knocking it
down from twenty thirty feet down?
Speaker 3 (06:17):
I do, But let me tell you, you know, it
is correct. It's absolutely correct what Cameron said about Rick
Barnes giving Kevin Durant the green light, But that came
within the context of him wanting him to play defense.
You know, Rick Barnes tells this story is a great story.
When Aj Abrams played for Texas and in the mid
(06:40):
two thousands left as the all time three point shooter
and was outstanding shooter. Rick used to tell Aj at first,
because you were the worst defender I have ever seen.
You're a terrible defender. He told him that Aj was
a junior. I think when Kevin Durant came in and
(07:02):
Rick stop practiced relatively early in the practice and said, Aj,
you remember when I told you you were the worst
defender I had ever seen in AJ said, yet, he goes, well,
I apologize he is, and he pointed to Durant and
uh so, you know, Trey Johnson is a better defender
coming in and has the want to The two scrimmages
(07:23):
demonstrated that sometimes the aggression can get you into trouble.
He got into foul trouble in both of those games,
both of those full on scrimmages. So that's one area
they're trying to get in and be aggressive, but understand
your limits, don't you know. Don't get too aggressive and
get yourself in the foul difficulty because they do need
him on the floor.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
So uh. And then you know, in terms of some
of the other guys, Arthur Kaluma.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Could always shoot the three, uh if you know when
he was, you know, out there on the floor. And
then Jordan Pope can shoot the three. Kenda Weaver has
worked on his shot, so he's gotten better in that respect.
But we know of him as a defensive stopper and
a guy who can run the floor. And I think
Tremont Mark can can fire up a three. Now he's
been a bit hobbled of late. We'll see how well
(08:06):
he does. But you know, there's the green light exists
if you're running it correctly within the offense. And that's
one thing that Rodney wants to see. He wants to
see the guys run the offense. That doesn't mean slow
it down to a half court drag and do fourteen passes.
Run the offense, and he wants them to be an
elevated tempo, but he wants them to play under control.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
Yeah, and this year's team, Craig, compared to last year,
there's so many different guys who can score, who can shoot,
who can create with the ball in their hands.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
It's going to take some time.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
I think for them to be able to get comfortable
with sharing the ball and how the offense matches. So
I think for the first couple of games, first couple
of months, we're going to see how this offense works together.
Because you know, you mentioned all the newcomers, Craig. They
come from schools where a lot of the times they
were the number one or number two option.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Now they've got to come in.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
They got developed that chemistry and learn how to play
with each other. But hey, that's the problem we're seeing
not just but Texas, but every other school. Hiose State,
the team they're playing the night, has nine newcomers on
this roster.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
Yeah, it's a Andrew.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
This will be a quite a unique looking Ohio State team.
They do return their outstanding point guard, Bruce Thornton, but
they've got other guys who did excel at other places,
like Michie Johnson at South Carolina and my comparish at
San Diego State, and Shaun Stewart at Duke and Aaron
Bradshaw Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
I could go on and on.
Speaker 3 (09:25):
If I'm a halfe from Penn State, there's several different
guys who did it, but that was within a completely
different you know, role and a completely different group.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
So they have to learn to play together.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
And not only that, in Jake Diebler, you got a
guy who was an interim head coach who took over
last year and coached the final eleven games last year
and coached the Buckeyes to an eight and three mark
over those final eleven games. So they're getting to know
each other pretty well. It's it's it's the typical things
you see, Andrew for a first game of a brand
(10:00):
new college basketball season, a lot of new and unknown
on the floor.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
I was gonna say, Buck, guys were one of the
streakiest teams in the Big Ten last year, finished twenty
two and fourteen with three ni T teams or games.
All Right, guys, I'm excited for this one. And do
you have any predictions? I know that Craig, you're not
going to put anything out there, but Cam, what do
you think of this game?
Speaker 2 (10:22):
It's up in the air.
Speaker 4 (10:23):
I mean, like we said, we don't really know what
these two teams will look like on the floor. I mean,
we know what they have, but I think both teams
are going to learn a lot from what they see
tonight and as they get deeper and deeper into the season.
So I would tell Texas fans this, don't get caught
up too much in the win or last night, no
matter what happens, because again, it's going to take a
(10:44):
few months for this team to kind of figure themselves out,
find who their identity is, and hopefully make it deep
run later in the season.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Andrew, I will tell you this, they feel pretty good
about but what they've seen so far with the coaches
will also tell you that, you know, the home openers
Friday night against Houston Christian, they Steve McClain was telling
Eddie Orn and me yesterday a long.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Warts you know, Associate head coach Steve is telling us.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
He goes, Yeah, it's one of those deals where you
wish the Houston Christian game was first, in the Ohio
State game second.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
He goes, but that's not the way it is.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
So, you know, you hope that that they've picked up
well from the two scrimmage They looked good in the
two scrimmages against Botisu and Colorado. We'll see how much
of that translates into the game tonight against Ohio State.
Speaker 1 (11:32):
That pre game begins here at eight thirty, tip off
nine pm on Cavett and ninety eight to one FM
Keevet as well. Guys, I want to talk about a
little college football. Do you get to see any of
the games over the weekend?
Speaker 2 (11:44):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (11:44):
Yeah, I mean Saturday was the first Saturday I've you know,
had off while there was the first buy but I
was kind of driving back and forth to Dallas and
stuff like that, so absolutely, I I kind of parked
myself in the chair and watched the early games and
then obviously watch Texas A and M and South Carolina
and SMU PID and you know, so yeah, I got
(12:05):
I got a chance to watch quite a.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
Bit of a how about you, Kim.
Speaker 4 (12:08):
Yeah, likewise, I was glued to my TV on Saturdays,
some great football. That A and M South Carolina game
was so much fun. I've been able to go to
William Bryce Stadium before. It's a fantastic environment. And the
big thing from it, Craig, I think, is now we
kind of have a clearer picture of what the SEC
Championship could look like. And I believe, from what I understand,
(12:29):
the only way Texas can make it to Atlanta is
if they went out and Georgia and LSU loses one game,
either one can lose. But with LSU having that one
loss in SEC play, Georgia having that win loss and
SEC play they do not play each other, but LSU
does play Alabama. Georgia still has ole miss in Tennessee
(12:50):
on the schedule, so a lot can still happen.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
You know, they're with this.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
The three thousand teams in the SEC, there's a good
chance there are four or five or six teams will
be tied with two losses or more, and that can
kind of create a headache.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
I mean, Sark talked about it. He was asked about
the SEC.
Speaker 4 (13:07):
Tiebreaker a few weeks ago and he said, I gave
up after reading the first couple of things because I
couldn't wrap my head around it.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
Yeah, I would say this for the moment here on
November fourth. What Cam just said is correct about the
tie break. However, it could change even if Georgia and
LSU and Texas all went out. And here's how it
could change. The next tiebreaker will go into the common
opponent's strength of schedule. Okay, whatever common opponents they have,
(13:37):
and they go to the strength of schedule, Well, that
could change based on how those opponents do down the.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Stretch of their SEC schedules.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
So while it would certainly be most advantageous to Texas
if either LSU or Georgia were to lose a game,
if either of those schools were to lose.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
One, then.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
It would and Texas went out and that would definitely
get them in. Even if that doesn't happen, it doesn't
necessarily mathematically keep them out of the SEC Championship. And
by the way, let me just say one other thing,
because I know there's been a lot of talk about this.
I've been seeing this on the television programs and in
social media.
Speaker 2 (14:23):
There's this growing let's just say, there's this.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
Growing feeling among a lot of people that you might
be better off not making the SEC Championship and still
winding up getting into the playoff because in their work,
in their words, if you get into the SEC Championship
and then you lose the game, there's a data point loss,
(14:48):
and then the team sitting back at home that didn't play,
that finished in third.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
Might have a better angle to get in.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
Well. Rich Clark, the executive director of the College Football Playoff.
Like I said, I was in on that webin last Wednesday.
Then we had him on the show Thursday, and he echoed,
he echoed what he said in the webinar, and he said,
teams will not will not be unduly punished for losing
in a conference championship game. All things get merited and waited.
(15:19):
But just because you get to the conference championship, say
lose your second game of the year, doesn't mean you're
going to be completely knocked out. When a team that
has one loss but didn't make the conference championship did
not play in that game and therefore did not have
a loss, he said, that's not a slam dunk by
any stretch, and it's not even a sure thing.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
It depends on the teams.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
That depends on their strength to schedule, depends on several things.
So for folks are saying, well, they're better off not
making the SEC Championship, you're start today in the press
that you were down there for that. We heard live
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
He said, not us.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
When somebody asked him about that, he goes, we're talking
about go one winning the SEC championship.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
No, that that has to be goal number one.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
Craig Way Cameron D.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
Parker from Las Vegas tip off tonight nine pm right
here on AM thirteen hunder of the Zone and on
Cavet FM ninety eight one. Gentlemen, have a safe and
great call tonight.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
You know when you say d as in Cameron d
Park at the D stands for Dallas, Dak got whack.
So he's out now with a hamstring and so yeah,
that's just one other thing. Not that that makes Dak,
not that that makes Cameron that unhappy.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
He doesn't. You're not that down on Dak, right.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
No, No, The D also may stand yes, Eddie or
in the D stands for double down, because that's what
he was doing.
Speaker 1 (16:34):
Yeah, yeah, all right, thanks Andrew, Thanks guys. We'll be
back with more in a moment right here on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. It's a Monday, it
is an inconceivable Monday. We'll go over some of the
biggest headlines from the weekend next on the Craigway Show
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone
