Speaker 1 (00:00):
To have you with us here on this Long Horns Monday,
which is turning into a crazy final day also of
the Major League Baseball regular season with the Atlanta Braves
in New York Mets playing those two makeup games. These
were the ones that were rained out last Wednesday and Thursday,

(00:20):
and when the Wednesday rain out came, Major League Baseball
automatically stepped in and said, no, we're gonna say both
are called off and they would only be played if
they became necessary based on what the Diamondbacks did of
the weekend at home against San Diego. Well, they became

(00:40):
necessary because not only did the Diamondbacks minute manage to
win one game. Not only that, but the Diamondbacks managed
to win one game, but also the Mets and Braves
did not sweep their series. The Mets on the road
won only one against the Brewers and the Braves won

(01:04):
two out of three, so going into today, which made
these this doubleheader necessary. The way that it worked was
the Braves could get in with one win, the Mets
could get in with one win. Both would if they
both win a game in this doubleheader, then it eliminates Arizona.

(01:24):
If one team sweeps the other in the doubleheader. Then
Arizona gets in as the six seeds. So that's that's
where that is right now. And again they're going to
the bottom of the nine tenning with the Mets back
in front eight to seven, and again it was a
situation where Atlanta was in great shape to win. Here's
the other thing. It's funny camera, you've heard me mention

(01:46):
this before. I think one of the silliest, most ridiculous
things that.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
That's on ESPN is the win probability. Oh my goodness,
thank you for saying that, Craig.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
I've said it is just I think it's absolutely useless.
I think there's no reason at all to have the
win probability begin. And he said, well, what's the big
deal with It's not a big deal. It's just that
it wildly just fluctuates back and forth. When the Mets
were down six to three and the eight tenny, the

(02:19):
Braves were a ninety two percent win probability, ninety two percent.
So then the Mets come back and score six runs
in the top of the eighth, they go to the
bomb of the eight, the Mets are up ninety four percent.
It goes from the Mets having an eight percent chance
of winning to ninety four percent. Then when the Braves

(02:41):
come back and then go up by scoring four runs
in the bottom of the eight to go up seven
to six, it wildly swings back and Atlanta has a
ninety four percent chance to win. And then the Mets
get the two run homer and right now, and it
just jumped ten percent because an outwurst register in the

(03:01):
top of line from seventy seven percent to eighty seven percent.
In other words, this is the thing. This is a
number that really serves no credible purpose. That's that's the point.
It just wildly fluctuates. You can't you can't figure out
any trend with it or anything like that. You'd be
making mistake if you went with that, because it just
it just wildly fluctuates based on an out in an

(03:23):
inning or a run scored in an inning or something
like that. And I know a lot of people say
that it's just for fun, okay, all right, but I
do think it's one of the silliest, most useless pieces
of television sports entertainment that's available out now. That's it.
And it's all by the way, A lot of this
is designed by the producers and executive and coordinating producers

(03:45):
who do this. And I know this from working in television.
I always say some of the most uh you might say,
dangerous people to the quality of a good sports telecast
of the producers because they get an idea in their
head about what they want to do with something, and
then this is something that comes from a higher up
level to do these win probabilities. Okay, so there was

(04:05):
a little seeing ice single for the Braves, So we'll
see what the wind probability just did, because it was
eighty seven percent for the Mets and thirteen percent for
Atlanta prior to the and they're not showing it yet
right now, but the time run is on at the
bottom of the ninth with one out with Mets leading

(04:26):
Atlanta eight to seven and eighty they must be calculating
the wind probability now now that the little dink single
has put the tying run on base with one out
in the bottom half of the ninth inning, and there's
a meeting on the mound to do this. Ranger season
ended yesterday, finished sixth below five hundred and seventy eight
and eighty four. By the way, the wind probability dropped

(04:50):
it dropped from eighty seven percent to seventy eight percent.
Now for the Mets Atlanta with a twenty two percent
win probability with the time run at first it went out.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
You know why I hate the win probability stat is
because last week in Fantasy going in the Monday night,
I had a ninety five percent chance of winning, and
then Joe Burrow Burrow and Jamar Chase said otherwise ended
up losing my one point. If not for that stupid probability,
I wouldn't have gotten my hopes up in thinking, Okay,
this is washed, I'm gonna win this week, so instead

(05:20):
I lose. So, yeah, win probability, you mentioned it. It's
just for fun. It's fun to say after the game that, hey,
you know, this team had a ninety nine percent chance
of winning and ended up losing. It's good for that,
but it has no impact of the game because look
at Texas in Mississippi State on Saturday. I'm sure Texas
had a eighty five percent chance of winning that game,

(05:41):
yet it was at one point a one possession game
for a large portion of that game in the first half.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
So win probability, you suck well. And then not only that,
a stolen base has put the tying run in scoring
position when probability is going up, Craig, I'm going to
see see what it says here. I think they're reconfiguring.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
The models are running right now, Deucers in the back.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Where's that win probability? Let's mean to update it right
now now that the time runs at second with one out?
What is what is the win? Probably even though the
hitter at the plate has an O two count Loreano
who is three for four with the homer today, but
uh showing yeah, it's a it's an O two. They
I think they're still trying to figure it out. I
think it's all still being fed in to their computer

(06:26):
and then and then it has to be enteredy into
graphics for the people in the truck or the fewsers
is making it up here or she's.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
Yeah right.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
They may not update until after this it bat is over,
which is oh and two now it's a one ball,
two strike council. They may not. They may not do
that until then. The uh as I mentioned, the Rangers
finished sixth blow five hundred, had a lot of Andrews
at a lot of excitement for the future that Wyatt
Langford finished with some really really exciting numbers.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Kumar Rocker showed some signs of laugh towards the end
the core. There's a lot of revolves around how healthy
can Max Serzer be this next season, and he's getting
up there in age. A lot of pitches have been
thrown the Grom coming back. So I think what we
need to see, however, is just maybe revamped the lineup.
Because the Rangers kind of rolled back out the same
lineup as last season, of course without one or two

(07:18):
few pieces, thought maybe okay, they can produce the same
they did in twenty twenty two to twenty three. Sus
me did not offense, was not great at the play,
and there was some injuries of course well, with a
lot of guys that just could not stay healthy throughout
the entire season. Evan Carter of course one of those guys.
Seeger Garcia is not the same player. But I think

(07:39):
it's time we see the Rangers offensive. Our front office
just kind of focusing on maybe revamping the lineup and
get some new bats in.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
Yeah, we'll see you they work that. By the way,
Loreano struck out The win probability is fourteen percent for
the race. So it only went up one even though
the runner got in a scoring position. I'd like to
see him updated with every pitch it's one ball, one song.
Oh it's fifteen percent. No, it's downs twelve percent, twenty,
you know, with every pitch. Now it's a ball and
two strikes, and see if the win probability dumps to
like eight percent or something. They're not going to do that.

(08:08):
But so game one nearing its completion. Again, the stake's
pretty high because if the Mets get one more strike
and they haven't gotten it yet, it's a two ball,
two strike count with Diaz the closure of the met
if they if they do get the win, they're in
and then Atlanta has to win game two to get in.
If they don't win game two, then Arizona will get

(08:30):
the number six seed and the Mets would be the
five seed. If Atlanta, let's just say that, Travis darnauld
it's a walk off to run Homer and the Bradys win,
they get in. They're the five. But even if they
lose this game and win the second game, they're still
the five. Atlanta will either get in as the five
seed or not at all. And darnaulde has just hit

(08:51):
the ball on the ground and Game one is over.
The Mets win eight to seven, so they've taken game
one of the double header. The New York Mets will
be in the playoffs as a wild card, either as
the five or the six, depending on the outcome of
Game two.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
So if you're the Mets, you just clinch the playoff spot,
can you forfeit this next game? I mean you want
to prevent injury? Right, Yeah, that's because they're playing tomorrow
or they will they play the tomorrow?

Speaker 1 (09:20):
Would they play the winner of this goes straight to
San Diego or to Milwaukee. If if the Braves win
Game two, Atlanta will be the five seed and we'll
go straight to San Diego and the Mets is the
sixth seed, will go to Milwaukee. You know, you make
a good point. Cam, I'm the Mets. I'd almost almost
rather not win Game two. I the Padres are playing

(09:43):
better baseball than the Brewers right now, so it might Now,
it just depends on what you want to do after that.
Even if you're fortunate to win that, would you rather
go to La or Philly? They're both about even as
as both there, Gene Watson said, they're both the heavyweights
out of there, and Jean will join us tomorrow. By
the way, you know preview of the Wildcard series which
begin tomorrow during the day. The Astros are playing I

(10:05):
think at one thirty tomorrow afternoon, so we'll keep people
updated on that. But again, Game one in the books
of the must play season ending doubleheader in Atlanta, the
Mets come from behind twice, down three to nothing. In
the eight they score six runs down by a score

(10:25):
of seven to six. In the ninth, they get a
two run homer from Francisco Lindor. They win Game one
eight to seven, so the Mets will be in the playoffs.
The other wildcard spot will either go to the Braves
of the Diamondbacks, and Atlanta now has to pitch Chris Sale.
Got to now, remember I said, we don't know if
you're the Diamondbacks, how you feel about this. I can

(10:45):
tell you this. I'll tell you who's happy about this,
the San Diego Padres, because they're looking at this going okay,
if Atlanta had won Game one, they weren't gonna pitch
Sale in game two now because they were gonna be
the five seed regardless. Now they have to win to
get in, so they're going to pitch Sail in Game two,
so the Padres know that they'll be able to dodge

(11:08):
Sail if Atlanta wins, because they're definitely the five seed.
If they win, the Mets will be the five seed
if they win game two, and Arizona would be the
six Arizona can only get in as the sixth seed,
so that's where it is right now. First game in
the books, Mets win eight to seven, they're in the playoffs.
Atlanta must win game two to get in. If they don't,
the Mets would be the five seed in Arizona would

(11:30):
be the sixth. Coming up, we'll hear more from long
Wren's head coach, Steve Sarkisia. Will continue on Sports Radio
