Speaker 1 (00:00):
We welcome you to our final day of coverage from Atlanta,
Georgia of the SEC Football Media is I know, I
know it's a four day deal, but our final day
from being on site is today here in Atlanta, and
we welcome you to the program this afternoon here on
thirteen hundred the Zone. My name is Craig Waye. Thanks
(00:23):
to you for being with us. Of course, the producer
here on site is Cameron D.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Parker.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas being
named for his favorite but yet not really followed that
closely pro football team because of the D standing for
disgust with the program right now with the Cowboys franchise,
the D in Atlanta here, what could he What could
(00:51):
it apply to you here?
Speaker 2 (00:54):
What would it be here? From Derby?
Speaker 3 (00:57):
You said the Derby as in the home run Derby
that Isnday, Monday night.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
I don't know who won, but I do remember cal
Raley's nickname is big Dumper. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Um, he was the one who wanted he did win it. Okay, yeah, yeah,
he wanted.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
Good for call.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Yeah decason for that. I don't know, I mean, I
have to think about it. I would say maybe Diaz
in Dominant dominate as in Texas really has dominated the
coverage this week because yesterday, obviously Texas was in Atlanta.
Steve Sarkisian spoke arch Manning the biggest commodity in Atlanta.
(01:37):
I mean we saw the media scrum that was building
up while Steve Sarkisian was doing his live press conference.
He does live press conference into his left maybe about
five yards or so. Media members are already lining up
for the media scrum for the breakout session with arch Manning.
And then recruiting wise, Texas picked up two huge can
(02:00):
It's Uh Atkinson and James Johnson, who was committed to Georgia.
So uh, two five stars coming in that a.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Big defensive player Atkinson number one linebacker in out of Lawrenceville, Georgia,
which is a hopskin going to jump away from where
we are now.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
And then I believe Johnson, James Johnson is from the
Miami Florida or the Florida region, and that has put
Texas now in the top ten of their class. So
I would say maybe dominant dominate.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Do you know where? Do you know what Lawrenceville, Georgia
is close.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
To the cater Gwynneck the THO was thinking it was out.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
I was thinking it was out.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Lawrenceville is where No, Dawsonville is where Bill Elliott's from,
but Lawrenceville.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Lawrenceville minutes away. Yeah, and I think it's east of Atlanta.
It's at northeast. Yeah, yeah, it's it's not far from
six Flags, Okay, six Flags over Georgia.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
That is.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Uh So.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Anyway, two big recruiting pickups yesterday for Long Worn Football.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
Speaking of Orange banding.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
That that media scrum to which Cameron referred, we're gonna
let you hear that right out of the gate in
the four o'clock hour.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
We're gonna let you hear that.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
But just in case you missed it this morning, and
even if you didn't miss it and and are interested
in hearing it again.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
Yesterday. And the way this.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
Works here at media days is there's a main head
coach press conference, and we brought you Steve Sarkesian's news
conference live here yesterday on the Zone. Then there are
breakout interviews with the head coach, and we didn't bring
(04:02):
that to you yesterday because we also had my sit
down one on one with sark which we brought to yesterday.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
But we are going to bring to you today.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
The the the breakout interview with Sark. But also, like
I said, in case you missed it, this morning, Mike
Hardball Harge did get a one on one a few
minutes with Arch Banning. Now that was and I had
(04:33):
had a group interview with Arch and Michael Taff and
Anthony Hill, the three long worn players are here. There's
also breakout interview sessions with those three guys. You're going
to get to hear that as well. In other words,
everything that they did publicly and on this station, you
get a chance to hear here in completion of it
(04:57):
this afternoon, so you'll get to hear that. And coming
up in just a moment here you're gonna hear Mike
Harg's conversation with Arch Manning. So that's coming up. So
that's why we wanted to let you know that. Here's
when else is coming up. Peter Burns of ESPN Radio,
you'll get a chance to hear from you. But also
(05:18):
the first of those breakouts, you're gonna hear from Anthony
Hill this hour, then Peter Burns from ESPN Radio, So
you're gonna get hear from those that's here in this
two o'clock hour. In the three o'clock hour, will bring
you the start breakout interview, all you know, sixteen minutes
of it when he was visiting with the reporters after
(05:38):
the news conference. Then a conversation with Laura Rutledge, the
outstanding reporter and host there on the SEC network, and
she's also the host there on NFL Live. So we'll
have that conversation with Laura, and then in the four
o'clock hour, we'll let you hear the Arch Manning breakout interview,
(06:05):
a conversation with lifetime Longhorn Sam Acho and talking to
Sam about his work at ESPN and he's got a
great foundation and a great initiative going on.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Right now, you'll.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Also hear from the breakout session with Michael Tapp. So
all of that is in line for today's program. But
right now, without further ado, let's bring you the conversation
Mike Hardball hard had and managed to have that yesterday
afternoon with Longhorns quarterback Arch Banning.
Speaker 5 (06:43):
Well, we've been waiting for this moment. A lot of
folks have been waiting on this. We get our chance
to sit down with Arch Manning. Arch this is your
first SEC day how's it been so far.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
It's been good, keptain light so far. Thanks for having me.
Speaker 4 (06:59):
Yeah, it's not gonna be that light.
Speaker 5 (07:01):
I can tell you that much right now, because obviously
there's gonna be a scrum when you get your chance
to go and meet with everybody and have that opportunity.
But what are some of the things that you and
the team have been working on this offseason going into
the football season.
Speaker 6 (07:16):
Yeah, for me, just getting to be around these guys
and be a leader, vothal a leader, and that's what
I'm working on. Our team's been good. We got a
close team, young group. We're really motivated, so we're fired
up for the year.
Speaker 4 (07:26):
And talk about the manning camp.
Speaker 5 (07:28):
Obviously that's very special to you with your family and everybody.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
That was there. But you got a chance to get.
Speaker 5 (07:34):
Some work with some of the guys that are here
at the SEC media days and you got to spend
some time with some different people. How cool was that?
Speaker 4 (07:42):
Yeah, it's cool for me.
Speaker 6 (07:42):
It's like a family reunion, but also just spending time
around other guys in the same position with me around
the country. I saw a gunner stock in there and said,
all these guys, it was fun getting kind of picked
their marine.
Speaker 5 (07:55):
Yep, we're talking to Arch Manning and Arch. You know,
a lot of expectations are coming in to this season. Obviously,
we don't want to go too deep into that because
that's what it is, it's expectations. But what are you
doing to keep yourself grounded besides just your family, but
also with your teammates.
Speaker 6 (08:12):
Yeah, I think just taking a day by day working hard,
and you know, I think sitting two years, I realized
that can't take anything for granted, being in this role.
I'm not gonna take him for grant and continue to
work hard to take care of my body, my nutrition,
eat a lot of pineapples, fruits, and stay ahead of
my game.
Speaker 5 (08:29):
Well, as you're eating these pineapples and these fruits, I
know mentally you're trying to get more engaged. And you
mentioned a bunch of times during your previous media availabilities
you talked about what it was like sitting behind Quinn,
learning from Quinn and not only just learning from him,
but also from coach Sarkasian.
Speaker 2 (08:49):
Yeah, I learned both so much from both those guys.
Speaker 6 (08:52):
Quinn, Yeah, he worked like a pro, whether it was
taking care of his body, film study or handling the media.
It was cool to watch him do his thing, and
he's he's.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Been so good in me.
Speaker 6 (09:02):
I know a lot of time it's not fun having
me as a backup, but yeah, he hammeled it like
pro and I can still reach out to him whenever
I want. So it's been fun learn from him and
then Coach Starks a genius. So anytime you get to
spend two years around those guys, you learn a lot.
Speaker 5 (09:17):
Yeah, and talking about your new offensive line, a lot
of people are talking about that as well. Uh, Trevor
Gooseby has been unbelievable. Every time I watch him on film,
he seems to get better and better. And I know
you can dunk a basketball. Are you you dunking with
him at all?
Speaker 7 (09:32):
Ah?
Speaker 6 (09:33):
I can't get up there like him, but I can do.
But no, juse, we played a little in the offseason.
He's he's a real deal, like shooting threes and everything.
And he's got a little brother who's who wanted some
of the tests too. He's a big time recruit basketball.
Speaker 5 (09:45):
Yeah, I've seen Austin playing quite a few times. Yeah,
he's pretty solid as well. Really, Yeah, let me ask
you about the wide receiving core, cause a lot of
people have been talking about the wide receivers. You know,
obviously you lost some guys that went to the NFL.
They've done some great things, but now this through with
you now has the expectations of doing some special things.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
Yeah, we got a good group.
Speaker 6 (10:05):
We got a bunch of young receivers that I spent
some time with in the spring, and then having Demo
and Wing go back the edition of Parker livingson Mit Mosley.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
It's gonna be a fun year.
Speaker 4 (10:14):
I gotta I gotta get them the ball, let them
go to work.
Speaker 5 (10:16):
Yeah, and you brought a new tight end and as well, Jake,
uh jack excuse me and uh.
Speaker 4 (10:21):
I heard that he has been really lighting it up.
Speaker 5 (10:23):
I got a chance to talk to Michael Taff earlier
and he was talking about how well he was playing.
Speaker 6 (10:27):
Yeah, Jackson hard worker. We've kind of got to see that.
In the first few weeks he's been here. He's always
asking him to do extra and so whenever you have
a guy like that as as motivated as you as
quarterback to get the extra work in, it's gonna be
a It's gonna be fun.
Speaker 5 (10:40):
Now that we're at the the point of SEC media days.
That means that football season is just around the corner.
Speaker 4 (10:47):
What are you gonna do.
Speaker 5 (10:47):
For the last couple of days where you can relax
a little bit before you get back on that grind.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
Yeah, I mean we don't really relax much.
Speaker 8 (10:54):
We going back to We got a a tough workout.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
It's Thursday Fridays. I think it's gonna be the toast
of the year.
Speaker 4 (11:00):
So get through that, hydrate up.
Speaker 6 (11:02):
But I'll take a few days to kind of get
away from football, hang with the family, and then and
get back to work.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
There is ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker 5 (11:09):
Arch Manning quarterback one at the University of Texas.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Thanks for taking the time, Thanks for having appreciate it.
Speaker 4 (11:15):
Appreciate you.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
So. Arch Manning is a you know, a relatively settled guy.
You know, the impression you mentioned yesterday, the impression you
got yesterday was he's big.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
He's huge. He's huge.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
He he doesn't seem like this was his first, you know,
ordeal with the media. He seems very relaxed, composed. He's
he's a nice guy. I mean, he finished our interview
with Harge and he was going to do an SEC
video shoot. He comes out and he's all right, let's go,
let's go, you know, hyping himself up. I think he's
ready for this season.
Speaker 4 (11:50):
I think he'll be just all right.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
Yeah, it's interesting.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
In the conversation I had with him as well as
with Anthony Hill and Michael yesterday, when I asked them
what they were looking forward to the coming season, he
talked about taking reps with the ones on a regular basis.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
And that's certainly a good thing if that's that's going on.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
All right, So there is Mike Hardball Hard's conversation with with.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Arch Manning coming up.
Speaker 1 (12:22):
We'll bring you that media breakout session with Anthony Hill. Now, Aunt,
as we know, is a pretty entertaining guy, so we'll
see how see how.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
He does in all of that.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
But he's he's a veteran and really the leader of
that linebacking corps and that's why he's here. And he's
a preseason All Conference in the preseason All American as well.
So that's on deck next and a little bit later
on this hour will visit with Peter Burns from ESPN.
So we'll continue here from the College Football Hall of
Fame side of this year's SEC Football Media Days right here.
(13:03):
I'm thirteen under the zone.
Speaker 4 (13:13):
We're back.
Speaker 9 (13:14):
It's the Craigway Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster and
voice of the Texas Longheards Craig Way.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
Continuing from SEC Football Media Days here in Atlanta, Georgia
at the College Football Hall of Fame came.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Have you walked around the hall much and looked at
the exhibits and things not?
Speaker 3 (13:34):
This week I was here. Gosh, I would probably say
sophomore freshman year of high school. Oh, really a long
time ago. Yeah, But I have not done too much.
I mean, it's been so busy since we got here.
I having a lot of time to just be able
to sit around and kind of take in the College
Football Hall of Fame.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
Well, it's kind of hard.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
To do too, because you have goofballs like us and
all these other radio show and online shows and podcasts
and everything going on. And so there's tables set up,
and there's microphones everywhere, There's cables and chords.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
And tape is down there.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
Some of the exhibits are kind of partially obscured.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
By all of that.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
I have a feeling I'd have to come back another
time and take it all in at another time, but
that's not why we're here. We're here, obviously to hear
from the student athletes and from the coaches, and we
heard Mike Hardball Hard's conversation with Arch Manning. We mentioned
(14:33):
there were three breakout sessions for the players, in one
for Long wrn's head coach Steve Sarkisian media breakout that
different than my interviews with those guys, and the actual
news conference with sark media breakout session. So, as we
promised before coming here, we were going to bring you
everything that was made available that has that is connected
(14:56):
to the University of Texas, and that includes the press
conference from Sark, my one on one with him, the
group interview I did yesterday. You can go to the
podcast page at AM thirteen under the Zone dot com
if you want to hear the group interview I did
with Michael Taff and Arch Manning and Anthony Hill. There's that,
(15:19):
but there's also the media breakout sessions because sometimes some
interesting things come out of that as well. So the
first of these that we're going to bring to you
this hour is with the Long Orange preseason All American linebacker.
Here is the media breakout session with Anthony Hill.
Speaker 10 (15:35):
Anthony good afternoon, Anthony, apstead of a AP as we
see it, Anthony, what is the most complicated offense you've
played against? Not the best skilled players, but the most
complicated offense.
Speaker 11 (15:47):
Like in the SEC or just by far my timing,
I feel like the most complicated offense I played was
Kansas my freshman year. They have ran a lot of
like the Tripleopers stuff and it is pretty difficult. Then
other than that, I would have to say the let
me think about this, I would have to say that
Georgia offense. They did a good mix of running and
(16:08):
passing the ball with complex concepts and it was a
it was a really fun game to play and I'm
looking forward to playing them next year.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
Right side just second row.
Speaker 12 (16:16):
Alex Binton on three, Anthony, Uh, what makes Colin Simmons
so unique?
Speaker 4 (16:22):
Special? And when did you?
Speaker 12 (16:25):
Was there a moment you kind of knew he was
a guy that could make an impact early.
Speaker 11 (16:29):
Yeah, from from the first day of the spring ball
when he came in and I've seen I knew something
was gonna be different about him, just the way he
can get off the football and do different stuff, the
way he can be in and all that. I knew
he was going to be be special from one of
the first couple of practices, So it's.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
The honor to play with him and he's gonna have
a great year this year.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
We're going to the left side, third row. Anthony Taylor
Shaw with kBT X and Culch Station. What do you
remember from the Texas A and M game last year
and how much you're looking forward to that rivalry at
home in Austin?
Speaker 11 (16:56):
Now, I remember mostly I remember it is a crowd
like the crowd was of crazy. It was a fun
game to play for the for the crowd and the media.
And then I remember the quarterback making some elite elite
runs and stepping up in the pocket and making a
couple of good throws. So that's definitely something I know
he's going to improve on going into another year. So
I'm looking forward to seeing them and Ruben Ohen's out there, man,
(17:16):
I can't wait to compete against him this year.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
It's gonna be a fun game.
Speaker 13 (17:21):
Well, Neil out here in the middle, yeah, Anthony Alex
Miller with the briankled station Eagle Tyler kind of stole
my question, But looking back on the A and M
Texas game, how is that rivalry different than the ou
Texas rivalry as you've been able to play in Boast.
Speaker 11 (17:34):
Now it's a little different since we're not playing at
a neutral side, of course, but it's really fun like
just playing against that team, and we have a lot
of familiar faces. I know a lot of them guys
on this team. I was committed with some of them,
so it's really fun playing against some of them, and
I can't wait to play them again this year.
Speaker 14 (17:50):
We go on the back on the right, Anthony Carsonfield
Sooners on that side. It kind of comes with the
name Manning having such high expectations placed on you. But
just from pcticing against him, what have you seen that
makes you think that he's going to be a.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
Star player at the college trouble.
Speaker 11 (18:06):
Just the way he reads the defense, he reads it
really well. He's also has the ability to take off
and run and change the play calls.
Speaker 2 (18:13):
He's done that a lot of time against us.
Speaker 11 (18:14):
So I feel like he's going to have a really
good season and he deserves to have the season that
that he rightfully deserves him.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
Left side row.
Speaker 1 (18:21):
Three, you said you had, you know you're looking forward
to you know, Georgia again, yeah, you know, playing them twice,
you know that they got the better of you both times.
Just what you learn from each of those games, and
then how much are you again looking forward to playing
them and then the possibility of, you know, another SEC
title game.
Speaker 2 (18:40):
I mean it's fun.
Speaker 11 (18:40):
I feel like they have a really good football team,
and we want to play against the best teams in
the world, So going against them is a great test
for us throughout the season, and playing them in a
regular season is going to be a.
Speaker 2 (18:50):
Really good game. And we know we have to play them.
Speaker 11 (18:52):
At their house, so we're looking forward for that test,
and I know it's going to be a really tough
game for us, so but we're ready.
Speaker 15 (18:58):
Thattle fourth row, Anthony. There's a lot of hype, of
course around arch Manning this week. How do you what
do you kind of make of the outside expectations and
how do you think he does handling those expectations.
Speaker 11 (19:10):
I feel like he does a really good job kind
of handling some of the hype around him. He doesn't
really have a social media or do any of that stuff,
so I know he's going to be ready to play.
I've been practicing against him for the last three to
four years, So I know he's going to be ready
to go and ready to play when the when the
moments and the lights are on right side, second row Sark.
Speaker 12 (19:27):
Earlier this offseason, Sarks has been on TV and discussed.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
How active a role Arts took in.
Speaker 4 (19:34):
The leadership kind of.
Speaker 12 (19:35):
So obviously, as a backup, there's only so much you
can do. But what's the difference you've seen from him
this offseason in that regard versus maybe obviously his first
two offseasons.
Speaker 11 (19:45):
You can see his competitive nature pop out a little
bit more in the workouts and some of that. So
he's coming in with a with a with an energy
to lead and be a leader, and he's calling the
plays like he's been back there leading the show for
the last three years. So you can tell he took
the right steps towards being the leader and learning from
Quinn throughout this time of him being a backup, and
(20:06):
in some workouts we were kind of kind of struggling
with doing our long wrun shuttles. He kind of brought
the group up and gave us some motivation, pumped us up,
and we went out there and kind of finished the
job executed.
Speaker 10 (20:17):
Left side third row Anthony had a defense that helped
the team reach the playoffs last year. So if you
can complete this sentence, the Texas defense will help the
help reach the college football playoffs.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
If say that the Texas.
Speaker 10 (20:35):
Defense will reach the college football playoffs this year, if
if we.
Speaker 11 (20:39):
Got there and communicate execute like the level we've been
doing and even exceeded a little bit more. I feel
like we have to communicate better than we did throughout
the years, and we have to execute in some of
the big moments like we haven't last year.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
We'll stay on the left side, third row.
Speaker 1 (20:55):
You can just talk about kind of expectations surrounding this team.
Obviously a lot of noise on the outside, but you know, internally,
what do you guys kind of focused on in this
point knowing you want to get back to where you
were and better.
Speaker 11 (21:07):
Yeah, we kind of just focused on just keeping every
everything day by day. We're going through the song workouts
right now, so we're just going to focus on that.
When we get to fall KMP, we're going to focus
on that. Then when we get the season print, we're
gonna kind of focus on that. So we want to
just take everything day by day and figure out things
as they go, but we want to execute and do our.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
Job to go in the middle on the third row.
Speaker 13 (21:28):
I know you're on the defense, but when Arch came
in in some of those situational moments, like when he
scored the touchdown against A and M, how did him
having success in those moments maybe prepare him to step
into this starting role.
Speaker 11 (21:39):
Now, get in a little bit of action, of course,
kind of gets you ready for the game, but it's
nothing like being back there for every every single, every
single play. So I feel like some of them games
where Quinn was kind of hurting, he played every single moment,
kind of got him ready, got him a little taste
for some playing some of the bigger games.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Does the SEC feel like home or is it still
kind of a new home for Ta.
Speaker 3 (22:01):
Xec.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
I wouldn't say it feels like home.
Speaker 11 (22:03):
Is just our second season, but we're gonna go out
there and just play our best and execute. We know
we have some tough away games and home games this year,
so we're just gonna go out there and kind of
just try.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
To execute do our job right. So second row obviously
give him this.
Speaker 12 (22:17):
Last name and the notoriety of being the number one
recruit and all that what's something about Arts that most
people probably don't know. That's kind of something that only
really his teammates, coaches, maybe his family understands a boy him.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
I feel like a lot of people don't know how
fast he is.
Speaker 11 (22:34):
Like he when he gets out the pocket, a lot
of people aren't gonna catch him.
Speaker 2 (22:38):
He really can run. He really could go. We'll go
in here in the middle in the fourth row.
Speaker 15 (22:47):
As a player, how do you sort of view momentum
game to game week tweak? You know, last season ended
how it did, but how do you kind of carry
over the positive momentum that you guys had at points
last season into.
Speaker 4 (22:56):
A new year.
Speaker 11 (22:57):
Yeah, Like it's our job as leaders to kind of
carry the momentum and kind of push some of the
younger guys and make sure they have the confidence to
go out there and go go play when they have
to go step up in the moment. So we kind
of just want to take them, take the young guys,
get them in the film room to make sure they
have the momentum and the confidence to be able to
go play.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
We have any final questions, we to go here on
the right.
Speaker 16 (23:18):
Side, Travis tend to ESPN Austin, Anthony, can you tell
me your feelings and the team's feelings on being able
to face Ohio State after just playing them through the
last game.
Speaker 11 (23:32):
I mean, it was a tough loss, but that was
the last season. We have a whole new team, so
we just want to go out there and be one
to know next year, and that's all We're gonna focus on,
just being one to know and then we're gonna handle
everything else when the time comes.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
Just regular bumper music with the rejoinder, and then I'm
gonna pitch it to the Peter Burns interview. They are
the thoughts of Anthony Hill, the long Worns linebacker, and
he no doubt will be one of the leaders of
this Texas long worn defense this season. And he's always
(24:06):
interesting to talk to him, and no matter how large
the media group is, he's he's very much at ease.
He's very much relaxed, even though you know, in my
conversation with him yesterday, he said, well, you know, I
hadn't done that much of this. He's done a little
more than than a lot of players have, so he
has done some.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
So it was good to hear from him. All right,
coming up next.
Speaker 1 (24:30):
We shift years and we'll do We've done that throughout
the course of our three days here, mixing in interviews
with players, coaches, press conference stuff, and also with national
media members, and we're gonna do that. Coming up, we're
gonna visit with Peter Burns of ESPN Radio. That's up
next when we continue from here in Atlanta at SEC
(24:53):
Football Media Days, I'm thirteen under the Zone.
Speaker 4 (25:01):
Back to the Craig Way Show.
Speaker 9 (25:03):
Connect with Craig through the text line by texting Texas
to age one five three zero followed by your message.
Standard message and data rates may apply.
Speaker 1 (25:14):
And this is a going a little bit different direction,
but that's one of the things you have the opportunity
to do when you are at a big event like
this when MEETI Days, you visit with so many different
people and get so many different perspectives and that's what
we do like to have obviously on this program and overall.
So with that in mind, Mike, Hardball, Harge and I
(25:38):
had the opportunity to visit with Peter Burns, big San
Antonio connection in his time in San Antonio. And now
I know you know Cam well acquainted with his work
on the ESPN Radio.
Speaker 3 (25:51):
Yeah, He's a fantastic broadcaster, a real nice guy. Gotten
used to seeing his face a lot because you know,
of course, with Texas being in the Southeastern con I
spent a lot more time watching SEC network than I
did I don't know, three to ten years ago since
the to the the debut of the network, and Peter
Burns was one of the first broadcasters to be a
(26:12):
part of that launch, as you'll hear them talk about
in this interview.
Speaker 1 (26:15):
All Right, so here's the conversation that we had with
Peter Burns.
Speaker 2 (26:21):
Of ESPN Radio.
Speaker 1 (26:23):
We continue from SEC Media days, always a.
Speaker 2 (26:27):
Fun convocation and conclave of.
Speaker 1 (26:30):
Some of the best, biggest and brightest minds and my
cards too. But also also in addition to that, we're
very pleased to be joined by one of the foremost
voices on network radio when it comes to college football,
and that's Peter Burns of ESPN.
Speaker 2 (26:47):
It's great to see appreciate.
Speaker 17 (26:48):
I gotta be honest with you that this is such
a huge moment for me. I grew up and I
don't want to aide you. But now you here living
in San Antonio, Texas and listening to the great Craig
Way calls, so many calls and so like they're there's
moments in your life you're like, you have this pinch
me moment, like how the hell am I here?
Speaker 4 (27:04):
And the first one I ever.
Speaker 17 (27:05):
Had was when I was working for the SEC Network.
We had just launched as one of the original anchors,
and Brent Musburger threw it to me at halftime, and
I'm like, oh my god, this is really happening. Like
they're gonna find out I'm such a fraud. They're gonna
kick me out. Now eleven years later, I get opportunity.
You guys are here and I get to talk to you.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
This is awesome. I could do it.
Speaker 1 (27:23):
Musburger said, all right, then we're gonna send it to
our friend Peter Burns.
Speaker 17 (27:27):
Then I hammer the under That's why that's.
Speaker 3 (27:31):
Exactly right there.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
This event means a lot of different things to different people,
whether you talk about coaches or administrators or whatever, and
that goes for media and fans as well.
Speaker 2 (27:43):
How do you consume it?
Speaker 17 (27:45):
So it's interesting because Craig, this is the first year
that I felt that it's been a normal media day
since twenty nineteen. Twenty twenty, you didn't have it twenty
one we're talking about conference expansion, Texas Oklahoma are coming in,
what that's.
Speaker 3 (27:57):
Going to look like.
Speaker 17 (27:57):
Okay, now we're doing the college football playoffs, expands, nil
transfer portal, all of that stuff seems to settled down,
and this is the first time I feel like we're
actually talking about football. The problem is nobody knows who
the hell's on the roster anymore, including some of the coaches.
I mean, like I had coach earlier yesterday, we say
what coach it was, but he was like, hey, be
careful about my defense. I got to figure out who's
(28:18):
still on there. So does stunts to go too deep.
And that's not unique because I mean you get, you know,
teams like Old Miss that have four returning starters back
next year. So it's a little bit different. Why it's
important for me, it's not so much of what is said,
it's how they say it. I'll vially remember one of
my favorite stories of media days was Mark Stoops. This
(28:39):
was probably four or five years ago. We're in our
little ESPN green room. He had done his you know,
interviews and stuff like that, and he storms down the
hall and I'm like, oh damn, Like, what the hell
just happened, and he pulls me to the side and
he goes, Peter, this is a bunch of bs. He's like,
nobody's talking about this team, blah blah blah, and he
was pissed. And we're not in front of any cameras.
He's not doing this. He's just he's vetting, I mean,
just venting. And I realized like, oh, they're gonna be
(29:02):
really good and the media I picked them the win
four or five games, and they went on to win ten.
So a lot of times it's what these coaches, how
they handle themselves, the way that they talk inside, or
how they connect throughout the rooms. And a lot of
that too is with the quarterbacks as well, watching them
how they work doing these interviews. Are there always on
their phone? Are they taking pictures to the whole time?
(29:22):
Or they engage making eye contact And you can pretty
much doing this a long enough time, you could you
pretty much know who are going to be the dudes
and who are gonna be.
Speaker 2 (29:30):
The ones that are playing the part of the dudes.
Speaker 5 (29:31):
Well, I always think about it too. You were talking
about the quarterback situation. I've always been one to think
every quarterback on your squad, I mean, not on your squad,
but on each team should be represented here. A lot
of times the coaches don't even bring a quarterback because
I don't know what the message is gonna be. Are
they not good in front of the camera, are they
going to may not know who?
Speaker 17 (29:53):
We've seen both sides of it. I mean, listen, I
can't believe. It's like have watching the Bloods and crips
and you guys over here, sooner is over here. But
like when you think about Marcel Reid, why would Marcel
read not be the guy now, whether or not he
has a kid's camp that he's working in college station
or wherever, wherever is home for him. I get it,
But I'm like, this is a pretty big opportunity to
(30:14):
showcase and shine your light on who you were going
to be so and then you get situations like you
guys where you have a manning who for the time,
at probably age of three, he was getting ready for
these moments.
Speaker 2 (30:24):
So we'd like to see the quarterbacks.
Speaker 17 (30:27):
I had an opportunity to interview Austin Simmons yesterday.
Speaker 2 (30:30):
The kid over at old miss.
Speaker 17 (30:31):
Nineteen years old, homeschool, skip two grades and like remember
the Todd Morenovitch story. Right, Well, that was like where
his family just from day one, his Dad's like, you're
gonna do this, this, this, this, and this.
Speaker 2 (30:43):
I think this could be the opposite of that.
Speaker 17 (30:45):
In the fact of while that happened, I think it
could it could really help him. And this kid played baseball,
and I mean he's just he looks he looks like
a bigger, faster, stronger version of Tua and even cooler,
calm and collected than that.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
So I came away really impressed with him yesterday.
Speaker 1 (31:01):
Toward that end, anybody that's gotten to know a little
bit about the whole thing that has surrounded Arch Manning
understands that his family model has been really, really good.
They've been very, very patient, not only Cooper and his mom,
but the uncles and his grandfather and grandmother. They've all
taken a very deliberate approach to this whole thing and
(31:24):
have not been in a hurry.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
Now, having said that, I just.
Speaker 1 (31:27):
Visited with David Cutcliffe upstairs of course the long time. Yeah,
it was a coach of elid Ole Miss, an offensive
coordinator for Bayton. They're in coach to Duke and all that,
and he let Arch know Arch did not know this.
It was in the room upstairs with Arch, and he
let Arch know that when he was born, he had
a courier send over a letter of intent to the hospital.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
For Arch.
Speaker 1 (31:52):
So I guess the point of all of this. The
point of all this is that those sorts of expectations
and accolades have been coming for some time for Arts,
but it seems.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
As though he has processed well.
Speaker 17 (32:06):
And that's also one of the reasons why I thought
him going to Texas made perfect sense. He wasn't going
to be in the shadow or living in what had
happened over in Oxford or what happened over in Knoxville
with Peyton. He had an opportunity to only forge his
own new beginnings, but also more importantly, that Sark had
a vision for him. Listen, I'm not going to put
you in. You don't need to be a freshman writer
(32:27):
from the jump. In fact, you don't need to need
to be a sophomore. Get bigger, faster, stronger, and you
can tell the way his body has developed over the
last couple of seasons.
Speaker 2 (32:34):
So do you go back and look at the history
of Eli and Peyton.
Speaker 17 (32:37):
They weren't guys that played great right from the jump,
and they're looking at it for more of a macro of, Hey,
do you want to have a Hall of Fame type career?
Speaker 2 (32:45):
Win Super Bowls. Don't be in a rush to be
out there.
Speaker 17 (32:49):
And by the way, it doesn't hurt whenever you're going
to make probably more money than all of us can buy,
well not correct way, but a lot more money than
everybody else. Combine. While you're doing it, take time, it's college.
Enjoy yourself because at some point every single person at
Jamal Charles on my show earlier today and I asked Jamal,
I was like, how was it in the NFL?
Speaker 2 (33:07):
And he goes and he just he goes.
Speaker 17 (33:08):
Man, you saw me smiling earlier, is because I was
thinking about the times that I was carrying the ball
for Mac Brown and I was with Vince Young, and
I was winning national championships and Craig.
Speaker 4 (33:16):
Wave was on the call.
Speaker 17 (33:17):
You know like that that type stuff like that is
is what you'll remember more so than anything because the
next level is business, because in it's business now, but
I think it's it's the purest version of what we'll
ever see anymore. And I think Sark has absolutely threaded
the needle of saying being open, honest, respectful with these
(33:38):
players and go, yes, this is real.
Speaker 2 (33:40):
There are responsibilities, and he.
Speaker 17 (33:42):
Runs it like an NFL team, And I think that's
one of the reasons why the Longhorns are here to
stay for a long long time.
Speaker 4 (33:50):
We appreciate it.
Speaker 5 (33:51):
Man, that's exciting times and as always, it's always good
seeing you.
Speaker 17 (33:55):
But most importantly you got the chance to meet Craig White.
I mean, listen, I was gonna ask for an autograph.
I don't know if that those were there. So general,
we appreciate it, and it's been again. Having Texas in
this conference has created a jolt.
Speaker 2 (34:09):
And well it's.
Speaker 1 (34:10):
One thing I was gonna ask you now that last year,
at this time in Dallas, Yep, there was I don't
know anybody wanted the long Corns to fail. Well, there
was an undercurrent of let's see how they do. Let's
see how they do.
Speaker 17 (34:23):
See if you felt this, not that they did selight Austin.
I mean, I listen, I lived in Texas for twenty years.
I'd always be up by a thirty five every time
I had a chance to go, you know, up to Austin.
And but it was more so like, you need to
pay your dues, because how often in the SEC do
we say you do you really need to do this,
this or this, and you can't just hurry up and
(34:45):
have success. So that's why I trust me. Everybody, even
Alabama fans were pulling for Georgia.
Speaker 2 (34:48):
Last year in the SEC Championship Games.
Speaker 17 (34:50):
They're like, you need to earn it, but I'm excited
about it. Gonna be fun this year.
Speaker 4 (34:54):
I can't wait.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
I appreciate you taking the time. Thanks boys, all right,
Peter Burns.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
ESPN will continue here on AM thirteen under the zone
Craig Way alongside the producer Cameron Parker Parker and Easa
Ortiza producer back in the studio, my card Ball Harje
joining us as well in segments, including a conversation we're
going to bring you here momentarily with Harje and Anthony
(35:18):
Hill Longhorns linebackers or as we mentioned, our pledge is
to bring to you all of the availabilities of the
Texas related people who were here yesterday, that was on
stage yesterday and so with that in mind, this was
the conversation yesterday afternoon that my card Ball Harge had
(35:41):
and you may have heard it this morning. If you didn't,
you get the chance to hear it now. And even
if you did, and hopefully you were listening to Harje
this morning from here, but you can get an encore
presentation of it. My card Ball Harge and Longhorns linebacker
Anthony Hill.
Speaker 5 (35:59):
Welcome back to the morning kickoff on AM thirteen hundred
The Zone, the flagship station for the University of Texas,
where you can hear all the games with the voice
of the Texas Longhorns, Craig Way. But you can listen
to us Monday through Friday, seven to nine am on
AM thirteen hundred The Zone and always free on the
iHeartRadio app. But Anthony, I wanted to get into this conversation.
(36:20):
We're sitting with Anthony Hill. You guys have been very
special in that defensive room. This might be one of
those defenses that everybody's gonna be talking about in a
later day, But as of right now, how excited are
you to get ready for this football season?
Speaker 2 (36:36):
I mean, it's real fun.
Speaker 11 (36:37):
We have an elite defense, got guys like Michael Taff,
Colin Simmons, Jelani McDonald.
Speaker 2 (36:42):
We got a lot of guys that were ready to
go out there HQ and ready to go play.
Speaker 4 (36:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (36:45):
I was excited about Manny Muhammad as well. He's one
of those guys that when he was coming out of
high school, I kept thinking to myself, he's gonna be
one of those guys that we're gonna be talking about
at the next level.
Speaker 4 (36:57):
But one of my favorite guys.
Speaker 5 (36:59):
Is from the two five, Yeah, Glanie McDonald Alni and
I'm excited to see what he is capable of doing
because we don't know cause he's so athletic, and he's
moved around and he's made some adjustments and he's been here,
he's been there.
Speaker 4 (37:13):
What is it about him that makes him so special?
Speaker 11 (37:16):
He's he's so coachable. I mean he does a lot
of different things for the defense. He been playing in
a box a little bit, he plays up top, play
some cover three high, so he does a great job
of being adjustable and being coastre boy, and he can playing.
Speaker 2 (37:26):
In a lot of different spots.
Speaker 7 (37:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (37:27):
And another guy that I thought, it's kind of like
yourself when you bump when you came out of high school.
Speaker 4 (37:32):
I was like, this dude probably can go to the NFL.
Speaker 8 (37:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (37:34):
Colin Simmons is another one.
Speaker 5 (37:36):
Of those guys, and he we got the quote, uh,
we play it as a drop all the time. They
ask him why he switched to number one, he said,
because I am the one yea, And so his mindset
is a.
Speaker 4 (37:46):
Little bit different.
Speaker 5 (37:47):
But how special is it knowing that if you look
to your right and you look to your left, that
you have those types of players.
Speaker 11 (37:52):
I mean, it's it's really relax and seeing him a
h on a line of excuruity, he's real relaxed and
seeing him, we know that's a guy that's gonna make
plays and take a lot of Shriself and everybody in
the back in on the first seven.
Speaker 4 (38:02):
Then you got some leadership in the back end.
Speaker 5 (38:04):
When you talk about Michael Taffs and what he's been
able to bring to this football team coming back for
another year, that back end seems to be something that's gonna.
Speaker 4 (38:12):
Be under control.
Speaker 3 (38:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
How refreshing is that knowing that you can go out
there and play free?
Speaker 11 (38:16):
Yeah, if it's good. We got guys like Meni coming
back for your three. He's been a guy that been
playing all three years. We got young guys like Kobe Black,
Gilbo and Kay Phillips in the corner spot. That's all
gonna be competing and ready to go for a spy
and we have a lot of talent in that in
that back end, so it's gonna be real fun to
see what they can ecconglish go out the season.
Speaker 5 (38:32):
And one of the things that we continue to look
at too, yeah, is obviously on the offensive side of
the ball. And I've I used to host the show
with Rob Bavers. Yeah, I've had I've worked with a
lot of the guys that went to the University of
Texas and their main thing is iron sharpens iron. So
when you're going up against the offense like the offense
(38:52):
that you see every day, it it's game speed is
ready right a lot, it's a.
Speaker 11 (38:58):
Lot of different plays information that they that we see
on game day.
Speaker 2 (39:01):
So it's it's real fun.
Speaker 11 (39:02):
And we get to compete against guys like Trey Wisner
and DeAndre Moore around Wino, So it's makes the games
kind of easier to knowing you're going to get some of.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
The best competition in the world.
Speaker 5 (39:11):
Talk about the growth of uh Coulton bask Oh, Yeah,
and what you've seen from Ethan Burke, two guys that
they've been waiting. They they've been waiting their time, so
to speak. They've been putting some impact, but now, as
you said, three and four years into it, it's time
to go.
Speaker 4 (39:26):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (39:26):
Both of those guys kind of remind me of each
other in the way.
Speaker 11 (39:29):
They're both physical, imposing guys that use their use their
strength and power to get into backfield, and they're gonna
both have you least seasons, just off in different ways.
Speaker 5 (39:37):
Yeah, we're talking to Anthony Hill Junior. I need to
make sure I say junior because got put respect on
dad's name.
Speaker 4 (39:43):
That's right.
Speaker 5 (39:44):
He was named after his daddy, So it's Anthony Hill Junior.
And now Anthony, you are a guy that is considered
a veteran. Yeah, I know that Derek Johnson spent some
time with you guys, and you get a chance to
learn from all of those legends that come back. What
is one of the things that Derek has kind of
helped you out with when you're watching film.
Speaker 11 (40:04):
Just just learning how to watch film and little stuff
technique wise, like we'll go watch something and then he'll
take me to the field and help me clean it
up like hands on. So it makes it makes it
a lot easier knowing you got a guy that knows
what he's doing and willing to go on the field
that actually helped you correct you.
Speaker 4 (40:19):
And that's the one thing about the University.
Speaker 5 (40:21):
Of Texas, and I know a lot of schools continue
to talk about those guys being able to come back
and they actually being a far Yeah, they're actually part
of it. They moved back to the to the Austin
area because they love the university so much. But as
you continue to grow and and s start your path,
what are some of the keystones that you feel like
(40:42):
each year you've gotten better with.
Speaker 11 (40:44):
Oh no, just my recovery phase and learning how to sleep,
sleep more and not going to sleep at one am anymore,
trying to cut it down at living thirty and this
little stuff like that, you know, helped you gain sleep,
and just learning how to how to treat your body,
going into sauna's, hot tubs and different stuff to make
sure that make sure that we're good to go during
the season.
Speaker 5 (41:01):
Yeah, recovery is something that is important. We got a
chance to talk to coach back then one day. Yeah,
he said, yeah, these boys got to learn how their
bodies are.
Speaker 4 (41:10):
What is what is fueling you?
Speaker 5 (41:12):
It's fueling you so you got to make sure that
you get that rest, one last thing before we let
you go, because I know you got a busy schedule.
But I wanted to ask, like your mindset when you
step on the field. I remember the game at Alabama.
I saw you make that big play in Alabama and
everybody that was.
Speaker 2 (41:31):
Your welcome to the SEC moment.
Speaker 5 (41:33):
Yeah, what is something that has stood out with you
that you remember vividly from the very No, just for
you that you said, oh, yeah, I'm here.
Speaker 11 (41:42):
I always knew like who I was growing up, so
I always knew going into college it wouldn't be really
any different from me.
Speaker 2 (41:48):
I always trusted in myself and.
Speaker 11 (41:50):
My instincts, and I just kept it pushing throughout the thing.
And I just been mistriding and just trying to get
better every day.
Speaker 4 (41:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (41:56):
We call him Agents zero number two because of what
number he wares. Yeah, but he is Anthony Hill Junior,
named after his daddy.
Speaker 2 (42:04):
So is Mama Collum Anthony Hill.
Speaker 3 (42:06):
JA.
Speaker 4 (42:06):
I'm McCollum Anthony Hill Junior.
Speaker 5 (42:08):
Anthony Hill junior linebacker for the University of Texas on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred design.
Speaker 1 (42:17):
Anthony Hill the long Oorn's linebacker with Mike Hardball.
Speaker 2 (42:21):
Harts their conversation. All right, we.
Speaker 1 (42:24):
Will go from player to coach coming up, As we mentioned,
Longrorn's head coach Steve Sarkisian was very very much available
to the media overall to us as the flagship station
for long Worn football and long Worn athletics. With our
exclusive sit down conversation with Sarki yesterday and coming up next,
(42:47):
you'll hear him in a breakout session on other media
talking about a lot of different topics with regard to
health and being asked about the future of college football
and all of those kinds of things.
Speaker 2 (42:58):
So that's next.
Speaker 1 (42:59):
As we continue from here at SEC Football Media Days,
we're inside the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia,
and that is up next the comments from Long Horn's
head coach Steve Sarcasian.
Speaker 2 (43:10):
When we continue, I'm thirteen under the.
Speaker 9 (43:12):
Zone and we're back to the Craig Way Show. Have
a message for Craig, share it by using the talkback
feature on the Ihearts radio app.
Speaker 1 (43:28):
Onward remarch here in Atlanta, and like we said, we'd
like to balance out the show by bringing you conversations
with players with coaches and with some of the area
and national media covering this, and that includes Laura Ruttledge,
who's done a fine job as the host of not
(43:51):
only with several programs on the ESPN family of networks,
but also NFL Live. So she's transitioned into the act.
So here was the conversation that we had with Laura
Rutledge of the ESPN. One of the great things about
being the play by play voice in the Texas Longhorns
(44:12):
is given the opportunity to meet and visit with people
not only in the conference level and a lot of
friends obviously the play by playfield, but also.
Speaker 8 (44:22):
On the national level. And Laura Rutlands is about as national.
Speaker 1 (44:27):
As you see between the ESPN family Networks and ABC
and the SEC Network and Nflive and all of those things.
Speaker 8 (44:34):
Great to see you. How it's so great to see you.
Speaker 18 (44:36):
I'm great, I'm glad it's Texas Day.
Speaker 7 (44:38):
Finally.
Speaker 18 (44:38):
I feel like we were dancing around it yesterday trying
to talk about.
Speaker 8 (44:41):
The Longhorns, where like that they're not here yet.
Speaker 19 (44:43):
Anyway, today we can Well, do you get a sense
do you get a sense of I heard somebody make
this comment yesterday that after last year not only for
Texas but also for Oklahoma, but obviously for Texas since
they got to the final from or whatever and they
were in.
Speaker 8 (44:59):
The SEC Championship, and that there is more of a
sense of.
Speaker 1 (45:03):
Belonging in terms of the outer view of Texas than
there might have been saved this time in year.
Speaker 18 (45:09):
Now, you know, I think SEC fans are all about respect.
So as much as rivalry is a big piece of this,
they also show respect when it's due and everyone's like,
all right, respect Texas.
Speaker 8 (45:19):
You guys made it further in the playoff than anybody else.
Speaker 2 (45:22):
And there's a.
Speaker 8 (45:23):
Team that I think last year a lot of people
believed could win the national championship is.
Speaker 2 (45:27):
Capable of it.
Speaker 18 (45:29):
But this year the expectations, rightfully so, are even higher.
And that's a credit to what Start's done. That's a
credit to the way that the team has been constructed.
And yes, they belong There was no doubt. I never
had a doubt about that. We said that very first
and foremost last season. But yes, I think they have
proven and then some there belonging.
Speaker 2 (45:49):
To let me get your thoughts on this year.
Speaker 1 (45:52):
The fact that now here in age, with all the
expectation going in to that. There are some programs across
the country that I think already equipped for.
Speaker 2 (46:03):
That kind of expectation. Ohio State, obviously, that's.
Speaker 8 (46:06):
An under dame several letter like that. Do you see
Texas in that ilk.
Speaker 18 (46:10):
Absolutely yes, And I mean it's fascinating that we'll see
Texas and Ohio State beat up so early in the season,
because I do think as much as one of them,
either one of them could afford to lose that game.
It's a way to sort of stake and claim on
college football. That's a premiere of college football. And the
way I see it, the top few teams or Texas,
Ohio State, Clemson, maybe at Georgia Alabama. So Texas is
(46:34):
right there in that handful of teams that we all
expect to contend for national championship at SEC championship once again,
and we'll see how it all ends up shaking out.
But I'm excited about this group. It seems like Sark
and you guys would know this as well. My perception
is that he's more excited about this team than he's
been about any team I think during his tenure at.
Speaker 1 (46:52):
Texas, which says something yeah, yeah, absolutely, Okay, So that
brings us to those three special letters. No, not in IL.
All of the new you can go find on that
right CFP. With the playoffs, mean, we had Rich Clark
called yesterday where you heard that other commissioners speak at
length with Greg Tanky talking about the you know, whether
(47:12):
they might go to sixteen or that, and then and
then there's a wow, the stuff that was kind of
rampumped and amped up about this tension that may be
building between the SEC and the Big ten.
Speaker 8 (47:25):
Is that the body that you're getting as well?
Speaker 18 (47:27):
Yes, I think Kishier Sinking was very calculated in his
work choice, as he usually is, but you can tell,
you know the way he was even phrasing it. You know,
they may think a certain way, we think.
Speaker 8 (47:39):
A different way.
Speaker 18 (47:40):
This all came out of the Destined meetings too, which
mean at those meetings just a little bit behind the curtain.
We've been talked to Commissioner Sanki after he had been
with the coaches kind of running through all the possibilities,
and he was like, guys, they're all throwing so many
different things against the.
Speaker 2 (47:54):
Wall as coaches are to do.
Speaker 8 (47:57):
None of that is going to be impossible.
Speaker 2 (47:58):
But at this point it is a little.
Speaker 18 (48:00):
Bit wide open about what could end up happening. And then,
as we sure saying he said yesterday, they could just
continue on doing what they're doing. And that's where I
think it gets a little dicey, because if you were
the SEC, you feel like last season your team's right
being penalized for the difficult schedule in a way that
we probably didn't expect it. We had seen strength of
schedule be such a centerpiece at the College Football Player
(48:23):
Committee selection process that it's like when you think that
would carry on, and then that committee didn't seem to
value it in ways that other committees had in the past.
Someone that probably had to do with the fact that
it was the first iteration of the twelve team playoff.
But every year that could end up being a detriment
to a conference or maybe a positive, right, so the
Big Ten might end up being on the losing side
(48:44):
of that, and that's where I think we're going to
see that just continue to.
Speaker 8 (48:48):
Go every which way.
Speaker 18 (48:50):
And it does speak to a bit of an unraveling
of a relationship that I think this time last year
was very strong between the Big Ten and the SEC.
Speaker 1 (48:57):
So I feel compelled to ask, if you have an
opinion on a is an expansion to sixteen a good thing?
Speaker 2 (49:03):
You think it would be MB eight or nine in
conference game. I think an expansion to sixteen is a.
Speaker 8 (49:09):
Good thing, and I hope you see that happen.
Speaker 18 (49:12):
To me, more opportunity for more teams is never a
bad thing, And there were so many. I mean you
look at even the top sixteen as it was slated
last season, and teams that we would have seen in
that I'm not sure they wouldn't have advanced all the
weight and maybe.
Speaker 2 (49:25):
Play in the National Championship.
Speaker 18 (49:26):
I mean, there were some teams that were super hot
at the end of the season a South Carolina for example,
maybe even in this in some ways, like wouldn't we have.
Speaker 2 (49:34):
Wanted to see I realize I'm just picking at SEC team, Sorry,
but wouldn't we have.
Speaker 18 (49:39):
Wanted to see Jackson Dart in the playoff and see
what you could have done? You know, teams that had
a great cornerback and other pieces around them that just
had lost some weird games earlier on in the year.
So I think that's a benefit. And then I also
think we should probably go to nine games. Now that
is a whole other nut to crap, right, like, because
(49:59):
that whole situation until we see the Playoff Committee reward
which I have a small sample size, basic, until we
see teams rewarded for these expanded and more difficult schedules,
you can't expect the schools to want that.
Speaker 2 (50:14):
The presidents are.
Speaker 18 (50:14):
Going to vote against it, and I get why, but
ultimately I think that's where we're going. And it's almost
like the NFL, as much as you may have said,
like we're not going to add an eighteenth game, We're
not going to add more of this because you know
the players and all that may end up doing it.
Speaker 8 (50:29):
It's all a business. It'll probably happen a matter of time, exactly.
Speaker 2 (50:32):
Well, and that's that's a perfect segue.
Speaker 1 (50:34):
The last thing we're going to asking about that now,
walking as close as you do and have been the
past couple of years with with the NFL, how much
of that is.
Speaker 8 (50:42):
A palet cleaner for you, so to speak?
Speaker 2 (50:44):
And is a compartmentalizing thing.
Speaker 4 (50:47):
I get asked a question a lot of doing the.
Speaker 1 (50:48):
Different sports and is access but doing but doing the
NFL responsibilities now in addition to what you've been doing
at the collegiate life.
Speaker 18 (50:56):
Yeah, it's it's two very different things, and you can
relate to that.
Speaker 8 (51:00):
It's sort of like different compartments of the brain.
Speaker 18 (51:03):
But then there are intersections. And I think one of
the interesting things is seeing college sports.
Speaker 8 (51:08):
Become more like from sports, which.
Speaker 18 (51:11):
At times breaks our heart, right because there are things
that the nostalgia creaks in and we love what it
used to be and all of that.
Speaker 8 (51:18):
We need to accept that this is the real world.
Speaker 18 (51:20):
And what's happening now and what's going to continue to happen.
And I am happy that athletes are finally getting compensated,
which they should have been, right but it's almost becoming
more alike in a way. There are so many similarities
now to what college football is, what the NFL is,
and I think that's only those similarities will only increase.
But for me, you know, doing the NFL every day,
(51:42):
that's sort of like just second nature. When I show
up to do college I have to put a little
bit extra work into it because so much has changed and.
Speaker 8 (51:50):
Rosters will look the same.
Speaker 4 (51:51):
You know.
Speaker 18 (51:51):
I covered Texas all the way through the playoff last season.
I was there for every single game towards the end
and had the great pleasure of being on the sideline
for these Texas games, and I'm even looking at the
rosters are caring for this, and I'm like, well, golly,
that's changing. And then there are something, you know, like
a Ryan Wingo, who they kept telling us about last season,
who I'm like so excited for people to see him
the centerpiece of this offense. Obviously Arch and all of
(52:14):
the great pieces of this roster. But there are a
lot of changes every single year in college that you
don't necessarily see in the NFL, So it works a
whole different part of your breaking for sure.
Speaker 3 (52:24):
Look, it's great to see you.
Speaker 2 (52:24):
I appreciate you taking the time see you, and we'll see.
Speaker 8 (52:27):
Soon, absolutely, Laura Rubblings, ESPN. And not only do the
college work with the NFL.
Speaker 1 (52:33):
Worgans Well, we'll be back, will continue with more here
from SEC Media Days.
Speaker 2 (52:36):
I'm thirteen hundred seven the.
Speaker 1 (52:38):
Third and final hour of our time here in Atlanta,
Georgia at the College Football Hall of Fame. Of course,
it's SEC Football Media Days. The Texas Longhorns entering the
week as perhaps if not the favorite to win the
SEC right up there near the top there, perhaps with
Georgia and also Alabama being a player as well, and
(53:01):
the dark horses you could kind of keep an eye on.
Speaker 2 (53:04):
Like Florida, Tennessee or miss.
Speaker 1 (53:07):
It should be a really interesting and competitive college football season.
Yesterday on the program, we visited with Greg Sankey, the
SEC Commissioner, to talk about some of those things and
the possibility of the college Football Playoff being expanded, the
conversations they have with the Big Ten.
Speaker 2 (53:26):
The Big Ten would.
Speaker 1 (53:26):
Prefer more automatic qualifiers. The SEC coaches prefer the five
ahues and then eleven at large as if they were
to go to sixteen. But that's a conversation that will
be ongoing and continuing. Same story with the scheduling element.
(53:48):
If you were listening yesterday and if you missed it,
you can go to a podcast page at thirteen hunderd
The Zone AM thirteen under the Zone dot com, and
on the podcast page you will hear from yesterday program,
Greg Saiki saying they're probably going to get down to
right around deceimmer. So when the decision is made whether
the SEC will go to eight conference games, stay at
(54:10):
eight or go to nine, have a feeling they're gonna
stay at eight. I just kind of have a feeling
it's going to be like that, but we'll find out on.
Speaker 2 (54:17):
Down the road.
Speaker 1 (54:18):
Meanwhile, these teams get ready to go back to work,
and that includes the Loghorns with a new guy at quarterback,
Arch Banding. Yesterday, there was a conversation that I had
with Arch as well as with his teammates simultaneously with
the three of them, with getting an opportunity to visit
(54:38):
with Arch, and also with Michael Taff and also with
Anthony Hill. And we're going to hear from Michael Taff
a little bit later on this hour, but also earlier
in the program, and you may have heard it this morning.
My cardboll Harge had a one on one conversation with Arch.
We brought that to you in the first hour of
(54:59):
the program today after Harch hat it this morning. But
there was also the media breakout session where a lot
of other questions get fired at him. So here it is,
without further ado, Loghorn's quarterback arch Manny.
Speaker 20 (55:15):
Arch is here. He's ready for questions. Let's start here
in the front row.
Speaker 2 (55:21):
Prif lean over. Arch.
Speaker 21 (55:25):
Obviously your first time at SEC media days, there's a
lot of hype around you as a quarterback.
Speaker 2 (55:30):
But what do people maybe not know about you.
Speaker 6 (55:34):
I feel like I'm a pretty normal guy. I like
to hang out, my buddies, play golf. I take football
pretty seriously, but other than that, just a regular guy.
Speaker 2 (55:43):
We'll go over their left side third row.
Speaker 10 (55:46):
Hey, Arch, Apstead, I'm a ap as we see it. Arch,
What are some of the things you like to improve
upon from your last season and what can you say
about your receivers in this offense?
Speaker 6 (55:55):
Yeah, our servers are really good, really fast. We got
a bunch of young ones, but having Wing and Demo
back will be good. And I'm really just trying to
improve as a leader this offseason.
Speaker 20 (56:06):
Right side second really have been passed it forward Alex
Bindton on three Arch, you just kind of touched on it.
Speaker 12 (56:12):
But that becoming more of a leader. Your teammates have
said how active a role you took. Well, what was
the impetus of that to try to kind of establish
yourself this offseason?
Speaker 6 (56:23):
Yeah, I think as much as it it didn't always
It wasn't always easy those two years. I kind of
I feel like I got a lot of respect from
the team and now being more of a vocal leader
I have they know that it's coming from a place
of love and when I get on someone, they know
I'm not just being a turd.
Speaker 20 (56:39):
Middle section if throw triggered it, and with way thirty
one Arch, just with all the media attention that you've
gotten this offseason, your entire career, and then today all
the scrubs around you, has any of this started to
feel almost normal at this point.
Speaker 2 (56:55):
I don't know. Maybe so.
Speaker 6 (56:57):
I think I've had a lot of role models to
look up to and how they deal with the media.
I think Quinn did a really good job handling the media.
But I'm here to play ball, and this is very
much so secondary right side.
Speaker 2 (57:10):
Travistoon, ESPN Austin.
Speaker 16 (57:12):
Who's more competitive yourself or Michael Taff That's pretty close,
And who talks more annoying?
Speaker 2 (57:18):
Competitive?
Speaker 6 (57:19):
Though, Like it's like the little like he'll like, pick
up a piece of trash, Butye, I got, I picked
up trash like okay, no, but he's good.
Speaker 2 (57:27):
He's uh.
Speaker 6 (57:27):
He picked me off last week and two minute drill
which was annoying, but we were both pretty competitive. It
gets competitive on the golf course too. Who talks more trash?
Probably him? But yeah, probably him.
Speaker 20 (57:39):
Little section Fourth row Tyler Shaw with KBTX and College Station.
Speaker 1 (57:45):
Going back to, you know, being part of the renewal
of the Lone Star Showdown. You get to come in
and experience that scoring a touchdown. Just what what what
do you remember from that game and how much are
you looking forward uh to it being in Austin this year?
Speaker 2 (57:58):
Yeah, it was.
Speaker 6 (57:58):
It was a privileged to have that right back, and
I'm glad I got to impact the game a little bit.
They're a really good team and that was a big
time atmosphere and I'm looking forward to that game. I
got to spend some time with Marcel at MPa. He's
a really good guy and a good player, so we're
fired up to play them again.
Speaker 13 (58:16):
Right side, Hey, arch Alex Miller with the Brian College
Station Eagle, kind of pigging back off Tyler's question, big
touchdown in a key situation in that game. How did
moments of success like that maybe help prepare you stepping
into the role you'll have this season.
Speaker 6 (58:31):
Yeah, anytime you can get reps in the game and
make an impact to help your team win, it definitely
builds your confidence for the following year, and I think
I'm going to try and build on that front.
Speaker 2 (58:41):
Row than passed it to your right.
Speaker 22 (58:42):
Arch Caleb Taylor, Super Talk Mississippi here, you talked about
your role models up yesterday, your grandfather's jersey was displayed
as part of the Old Miss Shrine, and with your
family name, you're about to have your chance to shine
and show and create your own legacy.
Speaker 2 (58:56):
Well what's that look like for you? Yeah, it was
cool seeing that.
Speaker 6 (59:00):
I actually I think I came here maybe when it
was just opening with my grandfather to watch the ole
Miss Boise State game and opening week. But it's been
cool looking up to him and my uncles and my dad,
and I've always wanted to play in that sec so
it's been a blessing.
Speaker 2 (59:17):
Row arch Ben Garrett Rebel Grove on three.
Speaker 6 (59:20):
I'm curious, you know your dad's old Miss Rebel Archie's
you know jersey's here, Uncle Leli, I know you're a
Texas Longhorned quarterback. What's the relationship you grew up with it?
What's your relationship with Ole Miss? Now it's a little
bit different now. I guess I grew up going to games.
We had a place in Oxford, and I'd spend a
lot of the summer there and go to at least
a game a year.
Speaker 2 (59:40):
Now, so I guess not as much.
Speaker 6 (59:42):
But uh, but they got a really good coach and
a really good team.
Speaker 2 (59:46):
Spent some time with Austin a few weeks ago.
Speaker 6 (59:49):
He's a really good guy. He's got a hell of
an arm. So they're in for a good year. Second row,
right side Arch.
Speaker 12 (59:56):
Your uncles are notorious for having a really strong self
den kat and humor. You've shown flashes with that. What
are what's the Thanksgiving dinner like around the many you know,
family householded, it's just everybody on each other or what's
that like?
Speaker 7 (01:00:11):
Well?
Speaker 6 (01:00:11):
I think we play A and M the day after Thanksgiving,
so it won't be much this year. We'll probably be
with the team. But growing up it was fun Washington football.
It's it's pretty much like every other family watching football,
eat a lot, maybe go outside and wrestle.
Speaker 2 (01:00:25):
I don't know. It was pretty basic, nothing special.
Speaker 23 (01:00:30):
Ay Arch, Jacques D A W A BTV and BANTN Rouge.
Obviously your family name is big everywhere, but in Louisiana
it's very big. You're playing for Texas now, but are
you do you feel like you're also representing Louisiana? What
does Louisiana mean to you moving forward, even though you're
playing in the state of Texas.
Speaker 6 (01:00:48):
Yeah, I try to bring as much New Orleans style
to Texas. I learned a lot growing up in New Orleans,
been around a lot of good players. We have some
other guys from the state of Louisiana with me at Texas,
so it's been fun and going back every year to
Thibodeau just the New Orleans culture. In Louisiana culture is
second to none, so it's always fun going back.
Speaker 2 (01:01:10):
We'll go here in the middle fourth row.
Speaker 24 (01:01:13):
Kevin Backsley ESPN the ticket out of Montgomery Arch. Obviously
you played a lot with quin yours last year. Now
that you will be the starter, has he given you
any advice? What have you taken away from Quinn?
Speaker 2 (01:01:24):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:01:25):
I learned so much from Quinn and my two years
behind him. I think he handled it like a pro.
It's definitely not easy having me as the backup with
all the media, but he's always been nice to me
and good to me, and I'm forever grateful for him.
And I actually texted in the other week for advice
on two minutes what kind of plays he liked to
start with?
Speaker 15 (01:01:44):
Going the back row in the middle, Hey, Arch Kyle
Woods on Sports you said you've always wanted to play
in the SEC. How has Texas been able to transition
so well successfully in the SEC in two years.
Speaker 2 (01:01:58):
Or yeah, first year.
Speaker 6 (01:01:59):
I think that's a credit to coach Stark and the
way he's recruited and built the program. We ought a
bunch of good players and follow his lead, and so
this is a big time conference and it's it's tough
each week, but I think we've done a pretty good
job and I'm hoping to carry that forward.
Speaker 20 (01:02:17):
You think your mobility caught anybody by his surprise last year?
You can really move.
Speaker 6 (01:02:21):
Yeah, my dad was pretty fascinating. My mom was fast too.
I think she's she's competitive, so I try to mix
it up a little bit when I can go here
in the.
Speaker 2 (01:02:31):
Front row.
Speaker 25 (01:02:34):
Arch Chip Brown with Horns twenty four to seven and
Texas Sports Unfiltered. What's the hardest thing you've had to
deal with, you know, in your time at Texas and
this offseason?
Speaker 6 (01:02:47):
Yeah, I think I would say probably from going I played.
This is not really a big deal, but I played
every year in high school. It was two a high
school football, so that's that doesn't mean anything. But from
sitting out and not playing. That was pretty tough, but
I think more so now just dealing with the media
(01:03:07):
and stuff like, I don't really care about all that,
so I'm just here to play football, and that's kind
of what I want my focus to be.
Speaker 2 (01:03:13):
Right side third row, right there on the.
Speaker 26 (01:03:16):
End, chessa bouchet with NBC thirty three and Baton Rouge.
You and Garrett nes Myer seem to have a pretty
good relationship.
Speaker 2 (01:03:24):
How has it been.
Speaker 26 (01:03:25):
I mean, he's had one year as a starter owners belt.
Have y'all had those kind of conversations or you try
to keep it away from ball?
Speaker 6 (01:03:32):
Yeah? No, And this is my roommate at that camp.
I asked him probably two hundred questions. I had no
idea who's going to propose a week later. But I'm
excited for him. He's gonna have a good year. They
got a good squad over there.
Speaker 21 (01:03:45):
Final question here on the front row, Michael Browner WNSP
and Mobile. You talked about how hard it was not
to play those first couple of years. Obviously, we're in
a different era of college sports where it's a super
common thing to Okay, if I'm not playing right away,
I'm just going to go find somewhere I can play.
Speaker 2 (01:04:03):
Did that idea ever creep in?
Speaker 21 (01:04:05):
I have no doubt that you had offers to do that,
But was there ever any sort of consideration to do
something like that.
Speaker 6 (01:04:11):
Yeah, No, that never really crossed my mind. I know
Texas was the place I wanted to be. It was
the city I wanted to be in with the great education,
and I had friends there and I was still developing
and growing as a football player and as a person.
So I never really wanted to leave. If there were
somewhere else I wanted to be, I would.
Speaker 20 (01:04:25):
Have gone Arch. Thanks so very much for your time.
Thank y'all. Maybe we see you next year.
Speaker 1 (01:04:33):
So there's Arns Manning visiting with the assembled media in
the Beadia breakout session. We bring it back in switch
back to visiting with a member of the national media,
but he does have a Texas flavor. Sam Acho the
former long worn stand out defensive lineman and Warfull Trophy
winner and has a great calls and initiative going on,
(01:04:55):
but he's also pretty good football commentator. For equal visit
with Sam Macho coming up act when we continue from
SEC Football Media Days, I'm thirteen under the zone.
Speaker 2 (01:05:04):
We're back.
Speaker 9 (01:05:10):
It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
and voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.
Speaker 1 (01:05:18):
Okay, we figured that you probably have heard all you
need to hear, at least for now. Anyway, from ars Manning,
how about that? How about that comment he made there
however about the being a Heisman front runner thing and
him saying, he said, I don't want this to sound mean,
but don't really care what y'all are thinking about the
day he said, I got a lot to prove. He
said of it two starts. You know, you know that
(01:05:39):
reminds me of Yeah, Quinn yours absolutely said the same
type things. Absolutely, it's a great attitude and approach to have.
All right, let's continue with the program and we'll still
talk in Texas with a long worn legend. Sam Acho
was a was an All American and a warfaw Trophy
Award winner, and he's in now a broadcaster with ESPN,
(01:06:03):
and he's got some other great irons in the fire.
So here's the conversation that Mike Hardball Hart and I
had with sam Ocho. One thing that we always talk
about that going to these conference media days, is that
we re established connections with people we've seen, We get
a chance to relive some things.
Speaker 2 (01:06:24):
It was not you have to trust me on this.
Speaker 1 (01:06:27):
It was not that long ago when at Big twelve
media Days we were visiting with one Samuel Acho, the
pride of Saint Mark's of course, a lifetime Longhorn, now
doing great.
Speaker 2 (01:06:38):
Things with the ESPN. It's great to see.
Speaker 7 (01:06:39):
I'm glad of you here, thank you for having me
and I do you remember those Big twelve media days
and now we're sec media days and a lot of change,
but a lot has remained the same.
Speaker 4 (01:06:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:06:48):
Yeah, And I would imagine also that now being on
this side of it, you get a different perspective of it,
don't you.
Speaker 7 (01:06:55):
Oh way different even just watching the way people didn't
see this, but the way the shot was set up,
you're getting a level set up even I mean, you've
got a timer set there. I'm like, this, dude's a
pro off the sock. You've got a timer set up
even the introduction. So for me being on this side
of it now, which is so great to see, I
guess to see a world that's bigger than just myself
as a player who would go to big twelve Media
(01:07:16):
Days or whatever. You know, go to media days, I
think it's all about me, and you go here you realize,
oh no, there's so much work that goes on behind
the scenes and the teams that at people like this
station and all the other media networks here. So it's
exciting to see.
Speaker 5 (01:07:28):
Yeah, it's a unique situation because last year was the
first year of Texas being at SEC Media Days. They
did it in your hometown. We got a chance to
chop it up with you last year up at the
Omni in Dallas, and now we're at the Omni in
Atlanta and trying to do the exact same thing. But
over the course of the year, obviously you've called a
lot of ball, but over the course of the year,
(01:07:50):
you got to see.
Speaker 2 (01:07:50):
Your Alma mad Or do some amazing things.
Speaker 5 (01:07:53):
Texas getting back into the college football playoffs. Only team
to get back in it with even what its expanded
format come up a little bit short. So as you
watched this team and watch this program continue to flourish,
what's some of the things that stands out for you?
Speaker 7 (01:08:07):
What stands out to me is that first piece you
said that Texas has gone to back to back college
football playoffs. What also stands out is the second piece
of they haven't been able to win it right and
so we have high standard, a high standard at Texas.
Everybody knows that, but it's got to come to a
point where you don't just get there, you win it.
Now you're talking to a guy who got there and
didn't win. We went to the National Championship, we lost Alabama,
(01:08:28):
Coke got hurt. I still say, if he's healthy.
Speaker 4 (01:08:30):
I think everybody.
Speaker 7 (01:08:31):
Everybody knows that with Alabama people, but with the talent
that Texas has, not just on the offensive side of
the ball, the defense side of the ball, the coaching
staff that Texas has, there's got to come a point
where you don't just get there, but you win it all.
Speaker 1 (01:08:46):
I've been asked quite a bit about Shark and uh,
the way that he commands the program and all of
this sort of thing. And I was asked earlier, what
did I think was a quality of Shark that maybe
goes under the rate that folks don't see because they
see how he does in terms of running the team
and the program and all this sort of stuff. And
(01:09:07):
I said, I thought it was his relatability, the relatability
to his players, and to his coaches, and also to
the business office, the athletic director, and to they would
like to say, the BMD's the big money donors, you know,
all the and nobody, nobody did it better than Mack Brown.
He was the greatest ever at being able to command
(01:09:28):
all of that. But I see, I think, and I
see this now from start that he's right there in
terms of how he commands not only the program for
inside of Moncree, for his players, but outside in the
global perspective.
Speaker 7 (01:09:41):
Well, especially with the new age that college football has
gone to you talk. I mean, I remember, so my
first my first opportunity really in the media, at least
when I was then playing, was I say here, but
was that Texas? It was a spring game, and I
believe it was sarks first year. It was uh quinn
you weres first year. Maybe with Sarks' second year spring
game in twenty twenty one. This is before the whole
(01:10:02):
conversation about transfer, portal and il all these things. And
we're having a conversation and you know, we're doing an interview,
and then like the interview ends and all of a
sudden he starts talking about, hey man, there's gonna be
some changes in the quarterback room. I'm like, changes, What
do you mean. We have this guy, we have that guy,
and he's like, hey man, things are gonna change.
Speaker 3 (01:10:18):
I e.
Speaker 7 (01:10:19):
When it comes to transfers, and I'm like, oh my goodness,
this guy's thinking five, six, seven steps ahead. And so
Mac Brown had his way of doing it with the bmds.
You called him the big money donors and boosters, but
it seems as if Steve sharkisian Is found a way
to relate to the bigger landscape of college football and
(01:10:39):
not run from it but embrace it.
Speaker 5 (01:10:41):
Yeah, And that's the beautiful thing about him is he
always talks about you got to be able to adjust
because dinosaurs become extinct, right, so you start making these moves.
But you also look at the dynamics of college football.
You got a general manager, now you have director of operations.
You've got other people that can take some of that
off of you where you do have to go glad
(01:11:01):
hand and shake all the hands and kiss the babies.
But you also have people in place to where it's like,
all right, I need you to go to that meeting,
let me know the summary of it all. And now
I can get back to where I need to be,
and that's coaching ball.
Speaker 7 (01:11:14):
And you can think about it, it's not just that.
It's not just the director operations or the GMS. It's
also the other coaches he has on staff. Of these
coaches who I remember it was it a Gary Patterson
a couple of years ago. Was was not an official
coach on the staff. Was it a special assistant an analyst?
But and I have a huge affinity for Gary Patterson.
(01:11:35):
He recruited me at a TCU. I love the way
his defense is played, like I love him as a coach.
But I went into his office one time and I
saw him like he was the last guy in the building,
right like just in the watching film taking os. I
don't know how much he could do as far as
coaching on the field, but man, this guy treated it
like a GA position. How many coaches who are probably
gonna be in the Hall of Fame as far as
coaching goes or respect well respected to come to a
(01:11:57):
place like Texas and say, you know what, I'm gonna
sit back and I'm gonna do what I can and
help the program.
Speaker 3 (01:12:02):
I think that's another area that Sark has really taken the.
Speaker 1 (01:12:05):
Program to you, and Sark went down that road himself
at Alabama, so it's the same type of thing we're
visiting with Sam Antu here. All right, let's get into
some nuts and bolts things. Do you see the playoff
being expanded to sixteen? Is it a good thing? And
is this apparently tension building relationship between the SEC and
(01:12:25):
the Big ten going to get in the way of that.
Speaker 7 (01:12:29):
I think there's big tention between the SEC the Big ten,
at least when it comes to the networks, the TV
right ones that they have pretty much fought one's pretty
much ESPN. But to answer the first question, do I
think it'll go to sixteen? Yes, I do because I
think it's just more more revenue, right, It's more more games,
(01:12:50):
more inventory, yep, And so I think the powers that
be want more inventory. Do I think it needs to
go to sixteen? No, I don't. I think I think
that the model at twelve was a win. You saw
the best teams got in there, and the teams the
best teams even advanced. So I don't think it needs
to go to sixteen. But I think based off of
inventory and the powers that be, I think it will
(01:13:13):
eventually go to sixteen.
Speaker 1 (01:13:14):
By the way, did this this tension and rivalry thing
with ESPN and Fox Ima, does that extend with the Many?
Does that extend now to brother.
Speaker 2 (01:13:25):
V more brother?
Speaker 3 (01:13:26):
It doesn't? Well funny enough.
Speaker 7 (01:13:27):
My first one of my first real interviews was at Fox,
and I think a lot of it had to do
with Emmanuel I got a chance to interview with ESPN,
you know, a long run network, et cetera. But I've
had such an admiration for him and the work that
he's done. When he finished playing in college, he went
to the NFL, had a couple of injuries, played a
four year career there, but immediately jumped in the media,
was doing stuff with the Cowboys, doing stuff with the Longhorns.
(01:13:47):
And then fast forward he started at ESPN and then
went to Fox and so there's so many changes that
are happening in that space. But for me, it's been
great to watch and learn from him as he navigates
this new ear arena of life.
Speaker 5 (01:14:00):
Well, there's always a new arena of life, and there's
also a lot of opportunities, and you found a new
arena in life, and that's kind of why you're here.
Talk about tell the people. Why you're in town talking
to all these people.
Speaker 7 (01:14:12):
Yes, so I'm actually in town today, not to do
anything with ESPN or even really do anything with the
SEC per se. I'm here because of the All State
AFCA Good Works Team. So back in twenty ten at Texas,
I got a chance to be on the All State
AFCA Good Works Team, a team of players who are
known for their work in the community.
Speaker 3 (01:14:29):
I also got a chance to win an.
Speaker 7 (01:14:31):
Award called the Warffel Trophy, which is a trophy that
is meant to highlight players who are not just great
on the field, not just great academically, but great in
the community. Well, fast forward, and now these organizations have
joined to combine to shine the bigger light on the
work the players are doing. And so there's one hundred
and ninety seven players nominated. That's a record in the
thirty plus year history of the All State afcaa Good
(01:14:51):
Works Team, and the history of there's hundred ninety seven total,
one hundred and twelve for specifically for the All State
Warfelo Trophy piece of it. And it's just amazing. Right,
Guys like Michael Taff who started a deal called Task
Tackles donating money for every tackle that he makes to
go to Fennoel Awareness. You guys like DJ Lagway at
Florida who's starting nonprofits in order to help give back
to his community, and he's actually from Texas as well. Yeah,
(01:15:13):
so the reason I'm here is really just to shine
a bigger light on the work that players are doing.
We get so there's such this big conversation about ANIL
and transfer portal and the money and the players, and
we've rarely peel back the layers and say, Okay, what's
the heart behind this guy and why he's doing what
he's doing. We think, Oh, they just want as much
money as they can. Know, a lot of these players
are giving away their nil money a lot of these
(01:15:33):
ways in order to help their communities. They're starting nonprofits,
starting foundations, And so that's why I'm here today.
Speaker 1 (01:15:39):
Yeah, it has a personal touch with you, since you
have been involved in and been part of that and
into it means an awful lot to you personally because
of your involvement.
Speaker 3 (01:15:47):
It does. Yeah, being involved.
Speaker 7 (01:15:49):
The last is my third year being pretty much an
ambassador Tim Tebow, and I've been Tim Tebow has been
doing it for much longer than as far as this program,
but me coming alongside them and saying, Okay, I want
to be an ambassador for the work that the players
are doing. I've been going back to the Warfow Trophy
reunions for the last decade plus and seeing the work
that guys are doing, and so it's been great. And
also it's not just that players when they retire, they
(01:16:09):
still go and do work. Even my family and I
just got back from Nigeria doing medical mission.
Speaker 1 (01:16:12):
I was gonna ask you if you're still doing it, Yeah,
because you did it, you got doing it for years.
Speaker 7 (01:16:16):
Yeah, we were doing it. But my parents were doing
that for thirty six years and I joined them about
twenty years ago. When I was fifteen. I first started
going on that trip. And we just got that two
weeks ago, and we're going with doctors, nurses, surgeons, Dennis
after lunch as farm is doing. We built a hospital
out there, and so we're shining a light now on eighteen,
nineteen and twenty year olds. But when they're thirty, forty
and fifty, imagine how much bigger that light will be,
(01:16:36):
especially because they're now paving away right.
Speaker 3 (01:16:39):
Young players are.
Speaker 7 (01:16:39):
Looking at Michael Taffan saying, oh, not only can I
be a walk on do an All American, but man
I could be known for the work I do in
the community. Those That's what's that's why I get excited
about this work.
Speaker 1 (01:16:48):
You're you're your practice of paying it forward helps other
guys paying forward coming.
Speaker 3 (01:16:57):
After you correct. It's leaving a legacy.
Speaker 7 (01:16:58):
We think about legacy on the field, a legacy in
the broadcast booth through on the radio, and that's great
and that's nice, but there's such a a a there.
Speaker 3 (01:17:06):
We can go so far beyond that.
Speaker 7 (01:17:08):
We could be the best radio, best TV, best broadcaster,
and that's amazing, but I believe we can go beyond that.
Michael taff is a Birlsworth Trophy, all these things, but
I think he can go beyond that, and he's doing it.
DJ Lackway, mikeel Win a Heisman Trophy, but he's trying
to go beyond that. So what I get excited about
is we're being experts and masters in our craft. But
we're not just a radio personality or TV personality. We're
(01:17:30):
a full humans who want to don't want to be
like a former I'm not a former player and I'm
trying to leave a legacy, and I think that's that's
why I get excited because guys like Tim Tebow who
did it before me, and now I'm trying to do
it and then all of a sudden, Michael taff And
and k because all these guys were doing great work.
You want to be known for the same things.
Speaker 1 (01:17:46):
You know what, You're the same guy you were in
two thousand and nine, A great guy, and that's why
we like missing with him.
Speaker 4 (01:17:51):
I appreciate that, Yea so much.
Speaker 1 (01:17:52):
I appreciate you Sam Manto visiting with us here. We'll
continue from SEC Media Days. I'm thirteen under the.
Speaker 9 (01:17:57):
Zone and we're back to the Craig Way Show. Have
a message for Craig, share it by using the talkback
feature on the Ihearts radio app.
Speaker 1 (01:18:15):
Okay, So, what we're about to do now is to
bring you the final media availability of SEC Football Media
Days for a Texas Longhorn. We brought you the media
availabilities from Arch Banning and also Anthony Hill, as well
(01:18:37):
as our one on ones with them. Also head coach
Steve Sarkeesian with his press conference yesterday and then my
sit down one on one with him as well. Yesterday
and then today his media breakout session and then Michael
Taff the group interview that I did with Michael Taff
(01:19:00):
along with Anthony Hill and Arch Manning, and Taff with
his sit down with Mike Hardball, hard and Me yesterday.
But now we have one one final bit of Michael
Taff audio to bring to you, and this is from
the media breakout session. Again, all of these media breakout
(01:19:21):
sessions came yesterday, but we had so much sound from
our individual conversations with these guys and was sart that
we didn't have time to get to that, but we
promised that we would bring all of it to you
so you don't miss out on anything. So without further ado,
here is the media breakout session with long worn safety
(01:19:42):
Michael Taff.
Speaker 10 (01:19:43):
Michael, what's the biggest challenge for the Texas secondary this year?
And what are the differences you noticed between the two leagues?
Speaker 27 (01:19:51):
Yeah, great question. The first answer, how are we going
to handle success? So we obviously had a lot of success.
We had the award winner in our back end, we
had a second round draft pick in our back end,
and then we had a couple guys returning. So how
are we going to handle success and are we going
to be complacent with that success or are we going
(01:20:13):
to raise.
Speaker 2 (01:20:13):
The bar and raise the standard.
Speaker 27 (01:20:14):
And what I'm always trying to do is I'm trying
to raise the standard and understand that there's a bar
and we got to reset that every single year to
keep chasing greatness because at the end of the day,
if you want your name to be remembered, you got
to keep going and keep doing more. And remind me
of your second question, Oh, the league's the second question.
Is it's different, right, It's it's a lot of It's
(01:20:37):
a lot different. There's different speeds, there's different atmospheres, there's
different weather. But I know in the SEC. What I
can tell you about the SEC is you have to
be physically prepared every single game. Your body has to
be prepared every single game, and there's no game where
you can take it lightly right side fourth.
Speaker 4 (01:20:57):
Rough Alex Binton on three.
Speaker 12 (01:21:00):
Michael up Stark has said a few times in this
offseason how Arch is taken on more leadership responsibilities, kind
of taking that role by the horns, so to speak.
Just how have you seen that? Is there example where
he just came away maybe impressed of where he's making
those strides.
Speaker 27 (01:21:21):
Yeah, Arch is obviously one of my best friends. I
was his host when he was a recruit here on
his OV and ever since then we hit it off.
And I think the one thing that I respected about
him is he would look like an average joe if
you were walking across the halls. Besides that, he looks
(01:21:42):
exactly like his uncles and his granddad. But he's just
such a down to earth guy. And how he leads
is he gets respect of the locker room. And it's
not always the raw rack guy. You can be a
leader so many different ways. But how he leads is
he makes a personal relationship with every guy in the
locker room and tries to get respect from them.
Speaker 2 (01:22:03):
So that's leading by example.
Speaker 27 (01:22:05):
That's leading with intention by you know, sitting with different
people at lunch. That's going out of his way to
show people, hey, it's it's nice and it's good to go.
Thank people for holding the doors, thank people for cleaning
up our locker room. And so he leads by example
and he tries to set a standard for the guys,
which is really cool.
Speaker 20 (01:22:24):
What's the most common question you get about him. I'm
sure you get a ton of them. That is a
great question.
Speaker 27 (01:22:30):
The most common question I get about Arch is oh Man,
That's a good question. It's usually more generic. It's like,
how's Arch looking?
Speaker 3 (01:22:40):
You know?
Speaker 2 (01:22:41):
Arch? Is Arch the real deal?
Speaker 27 (01:22:42):
That's probably the biggest question I get about Is Arch
Manning the real deal? And my answer always to that
is just let his film do do all the talking.
Speaker 10 (01:22:53):
Left side on the end, Michael, what's the most complicated
pass offense you played against within those two conferences and
then through your career because you were in the playoffs
last year against the eventual national champion while state.
Speaker 27 (01:23:07):
Yeah, every offense that I've gone against has given me
some type of trouble, has given me some type of misdirection,
some type of scheme. And I think that's a respect
to our defense because they do stuff in the on
film that's different than than what they've seen, what they've shown, right,
And so I think that's a respect to our our
defense because we give them something that they've clearly never seen.
(01:23:30):
But probably the hardest, you know, offense that I've gone
against is Washington when Michael Pennix was there, Rama Dunda
was there, Joe Polk was there, There was guys Kevin
de Bore coach de war was was the head coach
there and so that was probably the game that was
toughest for me.
Speaker 13 (01:23:50):
Right side third row Alex Miller with the Brian College
Station Eagle. What what did playing in the A and
M Texas game mean for you last year? And where
did that interception you had in that game? Maybe rank
among your favorite football moments? Top moment on my life,
hands down.
Speaker 27 (01:24:04):
I was telling one of my friends the other month,
I was like, I think that was the coolest moment
of my life.
Speaker 2 (01:24:08):
So it's up there for moments of life.
Speaker 27 (01:24:10):
But I think like it's so important to know that
we had thirteen years of no Texas versus Texas A
and M rivalry and then all of a sudden we
get it back and it's in College Station. It's at Caulfield,
and people argue that that's the best atmosphere in all
of college football. And to believe that it wasn't rocking,
you'd be a fool, because that place was I saw
(01:24:32):
like five fields when they were running out of the
tunnel like.
Speaker 2 (01:24:34):
It was shaken.
Speaker 27 (01:24:35):
It was loud, it was crazy, and it's so good
for the great State of Texas. It's so good for
college football because in Austin there's no pro team, so
we are the pro team. The Texas long words are
the professional team, and in College Station obviously the same.
And so it's so it's like a rich tradition of
just you know, Texas fans that are going back and forth,
(01:24:57):
and it's so fun for us as competitors.
Speaker 1 (01:25:00):
Fourth row the middle Tyler Show with kicks in College
Station kind of picking backing off that. So it is
the best, you know, moment in your life. How much
you're looking forward to this year that game, you know,
being in Austin.
Speaker 27 (01:25:10):
Yeah, for sure, because I know that they got a
taste of being able to, you know, screen for their fans.
So that the the proud and few, the brave Longhorns
that went to that stadium. I don't know how they
did it, but I'm I'm you know, I'm happy for
them that they get to get a sea of burn
orange this next time that we go around. And it's
such a fun game. It brings out so much competitive
(01:25:32):
nature out of you. It brings out so much rich
tradition and history and rivalry, and that's what college football
is all about, is those rivalry games like Texas versus
Texas A and M and Marcel Reid. Heck of a player.
The guys that they've got on offense, heack of players.
So I'm excited.
Speaker 1 (01:25:48):
And then do you mind explain a little bit about
your your tie?
Speaker 2 (01:25:52):
And yeah, for sure, so my tie.
Speaker 27 (01:25:55):
The Texas floods happened this past week and Camp miss
It is a girl's church camp that was impacted pretty
pretty seriously. And so all these initials are all the
victims that Camp miss It, that that lost their lives
in the tragic flooding this past weekend. So it's all
the daughters, the eight year old girls that passed away
(01:26:16):
in the cabins. And then there are two counselors who
gave their lives being heroes trying to save those daughters
and those girls. And then the campus or the camp
director who went back into the floods to try to
save those girls' lives. So I wanted to remember those
those you know, victims, because they deserve a light like this,
what they did, they should be heroes, they.
Speaker 2 (01:26:37):
Should be remembered right side forth through.
Speaker 12 (01:26:41):
That's gonna be a difficult transition, but you mentioned your
your relationship with Arch and a lots were made about
your your friendship with Kate, you know, growing up and
things like in high school and stuff. So those are
two of the top Heisman favorites going into the season.
I'm not asking you make a pick if you had
(01:27:01):
a vote, but what do you make about their cases
for that award this year? What are they going to
have to do to maybe put one over the top
of the other.
Speaker 27 (01:27:12):
Yeah, well, obviously this quarterback class is so talented this year.
All the quarterbacks in the SEC are really talented alone,
but bringing in guys like Club k Klubnik, you know,
it makes this this roster, this class of quarterbacks so unique,
so competitive, a lot of juice. But the similarities that
(01:27:33):
Arch and Kate have is they know how to take
over a team and they know that the team embodies
their personality, and so they both of them walk on
the field and it's like, all right, it's game time
every single time they step on the field, and that's
our That's why I respect you know, both of those guys,
because they have that sense of competitiveness that it's like, all.
Speaker 2 (01:27:54):
Right, nobody can stop me. It's it's really inspiring.
Speaker 10 (01:27:58):
Left side third row Michael, you played against Ohio State
last year in Jeremiah Smith, what were your impressions of
him and how does he rank maybe in the athletes
you've competed against.
Speaker 27 (01:28:10):
You know, I can't even rank him yet because I
got to play him again, but he man, what he
does on that football field, it doesn't seem like a
real humans doing that because he's just so unique. He's
inspirational and all the talent, and he's still only nineteen
years old, and so that's gonna be really fun going
(01:28:34):
against him because he's a freaking nature. I've watched a
lot of his routes, almost all of them, dang near
from last year, and seeing how he gets in and
out of break, seeing how he runs full speed, seeing
how he stacks DB's, and then obviously the best thing
about him and one of his attributes is going.
Speaker 2 (01:28:49):
Up and getting the football.
Speaker 27 (01:28:50):
So you can put three dbs on him, but if
you give it up up in the air, he's gonna
go get.
Speaker 2 (01:28:55):
It, which is really really cool.
Speaker 20 (01:28:57):
Final question over here on the right asked Anthley this,
but what when did you know Colin Simmons was was
going to be special?
Speaker 12 (01:29:04):
And you know, what is what is one ipop a
moment for you you're just kind of like, Wow.
Speaker 27 (01:29:10):
The second that he stepped on campus, I knew Colin
Simmons was gonna be a guy. He's one of those
guys where you know coming in that he's a three
year and out, first round type of guy, and I
don't want to put too much pressure on him, but
I know that's his expectation for himself. One of the
plays was, you know, he wears this long towel in practice.
It's one of like a like a shower towel, And
(01:29:32):
I'm like, oh, what is this guy doing? And all
of a sudden he runs up with the ones already
you know, one of the first weeks he's out here
and said, hut, second or later he's getting back to
the quarterback and he's giving our left and right tackles.
Speaker 2 (01:29:45):
You know, a heck of a day.
Speaker 27 (01:29:46):
So it's definitely easier to play dB playing man coverage.
When you got him going after the quarterback, yeah, say what,
I don't know. It just shocked my eye. I was like,
is it that sweaty outside right now? Like why is
he wearing that towel? But then I watched him and
he got off the quarterbacks. I was like, you can
do whatever you want as long as you're getting to
the quarterback like that.
Speaker 1 (01:30:05):
So there it is, the words from the Longhorns veteran
Michael taff Camin. I'll be back to wrap up today's
