Speaker 1 (00:00):
Time to get over the hump, or at least hopefully so. Anyway,
good afternoon, everybody, welcome to the program here on sports
Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
My name is Craig Way.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
Glad to have you with us, And as I always say,
on Wednesday, hopefully you're able to get over the hump.
If Wednesday's indeed your hump day in the traditional Monday
to Friday work week, and if that's the case, hopefully
you're over the hump, or we'll get over that and
get ready for the downhill run to the weekend. Those
(00:32):
of you for whom Wednesday is merely the start of
the work week, hopefully it gets off to a good
start and carries you through that we get in. For
those of you who that look at Wednesday and Wednesday's
kind of like your Friday, you get the next couple
of days off, good on you, good for you, and
hopefully that goes well for you. Also, it's going to
(00:54):
be hot the rest of the week. We know that,
and that will include the Saturday football game when the
University of Texas plays its home opener at Daryl K.
Royal Texas Memorial Stadium and the Longhorns will be hosting
the Spartans of San Jose State University coming up this afternoon.
On the program, a couple of conversations related to that game,
(01:17):
and they will both come.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Your way in the four o'clock hour.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
One of those will be conversation with Ken Neo Matta Lolo,
the head coach of the San Jose State Spartans. So
we'll visit with the Spartans head coach in the four
o'clock hour. And also Cameron Parker had a chance to
(01:40):
sit down with Jack bowe Measter. Jack Bowmester was probably
not one of the headline names of the newcomers that
log Worn fans were fixated on as the season was
getting underway for several reasons. First of all, teams would
(02:00):
prefer not to talk that much about the punter because
if you're talking about the punter, that means that you're
giving up surrendering possession of the football.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
But it can be a very strategic thing.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
We saw that, I think, really on display when Michael
Dixon was the punter in Texas and to this day,
Michael Dixon is the only punter in college football Bowl
history to earn a Bowl MVP Award. It happened Tom
Herman's first season. The Long Worns beat Missouri in the
(02:36):
Texas Bowl and Michael Dixon and nobody had a problem
with it. Nobody had an argument with it. The media
voted in that, and everybody kind of nodded their head
because what the job he did in that game in
pinning Missouri back inside their own ten yard line time
and again in that Michael Dixon was from Australia, and
so is Jack Bowmeister and a senior transfer who was
(02:59):
at Utah. So Jack had himself quite an opener for
Texas and as a result of that are Cameron Parker
had a conversation with him, So we'll hear that coming up.
Both of those conversations mine with Ken neomat Lolo, the
head coach of San Jose State, and also hearing Cameron
(03:25):
Parker visit with Jack Bomester. Both of those are coming
up in the four o'clock hour. Here in the two
o'clock hour, we've got football notes. Of course, we have
inconceivable that has a sports tinge to it as well
as the fast food junk food angle, so we have
that coming your way as well, and we've got some
(03:45):
NFL to talk about. So there's plenty to visit about.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
That.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Producer of the program is Jay Carmon, who, by the way,
for a rookie, is really starting to get the hang
of things around here. Would you say that you fuel
more comfortable now now, now that you've gotten a few
more reps.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
I'd say we're getting there. It's like anything, right, I
got to get towards my ten thousand hours, But no,
I'm feeling a little bit better about things. And no,
I appreciate you asking who was it that said you
had to have ten thousand hours? Gladwell, Malcolm, Gladwell, it
was sure was So, yeah, it's a good point. And
once you've been doing.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
It for a while, after that you get pretty comfortable
and it kind of it kind of becomes second ature
to you on that.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
But you're doing a good job.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
You are doing that, and Cameron Parker has showing you
the rope as well. Cam of course is doing some
other things with our station, and of course camp will
still host the long Orange Game Day program along with
my cardboll Harge and the World's Strongest band Mark Henry.
They'll come your way this Saturday morning. Eight o'clock is
(04:54):
when it will start with Long Orange Game Day from
the wind Chips Circle location down along Evo Boulevard. They'll
be back down there for a second season, so that's
coming up, starting at eight o'clock Saturday morning. They'll go
for two hours from eight to ten. We have our
Network pregame show at ten am and with Roger Wallis
and Will Matthews joining me, and the kickoff at eleven
(05:17):
Texas and San Jose State, and then after the game
we have the Network post game and then after that
we have the Long Worn Local postgame show with the
Third and Long Worn guys. So we look forward to
bringing you that as well. Several items to get to.
First of all, this doesn't necessarily belong an inconceivable, but
(05:39):
it would raise some eyebrows.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Are you a soccer fan.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Probably more than the average person, but less than the
average soccer fan? Does that make sense?
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (05:52):
I think I see. I know a lot more teams
and names than I actually know ball. I don't know
ball when it comes to side.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
Okay. Have you ever been to a DC United game?
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Yes, when Wayne Rooney played there okay. And I saw
Christian Benech Okay play there.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
Once, So you've you've got a little more expansive knowledge
of soccer. I haven't obviously been to d C United's
newer facility. Where where is that stadium?
Speaker 3 (06:19):
By the way, it's in Navy Yard neighborhood, kind of
by the baseball near the National neighborhood. That's changed a lot,
But yeah, it's a good location. It's a good size.
It's too small to host World Cup events, but it's
the home of d C United and the DC Defenders
XFL team. It also hosted plenty of you know, national
(06:40):
team exhibition sure friendlies.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
The reason why I say that in my days of
doing uh what's now known as FC Dallas. Back in
the day they were called Dallas BYRNE in the nineties,
I did games between Dallas and Washington or Dallason d
C United. It was at RFK Stadium, the old RFK
Stadium where the Redskins played at the.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Time, and it was interesting.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
We had a good vantage point, but we were in
the upper deck, out of doors outside in an open
air press area. And now, of course RFK Stadium had
that kind of partial roof covering stuff, so we were covered.
We were almost always covered by pigeon poop.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
As well.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
They were flying around and dropping there. I never got
a hit by any of it, but it was all
around us when we were doing radio broadcast of that.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
I've only seen myself in pictures at RFK Stadium. I
don't think I remember much about it, other than the
scoreboard not having your traditional video board set up, just
the yellow one, you know, yellow on black, like you'd
see in the old NFL films.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
Well, that's true, and I take it you you went
to see Washington play was what it used to be
called FedExField.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
Now what's what Northwest Stadium or something is what it's called.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
I've been there a few times. It's one of those situations. Yeah,
I mean, look, if I'm if a friend's taken me,
a friend's taken me, I'm gonna go. But I you know,
I haven't gone with my family all that much. It's yeah,
it kind of just pops up in the middle of nowhere,
middle of print Sorges County and in you know, just
northwest of the belt Way, northeast of the belt Way,
(08:17):
I should say. And yeah, I mean that it's not
not much to talk about.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
And and for a stadium that was built what early
twentieth century.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
I guess I thought it was built in twenty first century.
Excuse me, right, I get it wrong. It could be.
I'll get your date on that.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
My point is is that it's not, you know, large,
multiple decades old, that it's been like, you know, just
twenty five, thirty thirty five years maybe something like that,
which can be long in the tooth first stadium, I suppose.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
Nineteen ninety six.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
Okay, all right, so ninety six, so it's thirty years old,
so you know this this would be its thirtieth season.
Twenty twenty five would be its thirtieth season, I suppose.
But you know, the one college game I called there
was when Texas played Maryland there in twenty eighteen season opener.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Remember it well, not one worth remembering.
Speaker 1 (09:14):
From a Texas perspective. It was a mess. It was raining,
the long runs did not play well. Sam Elligher almost
rallied in the victory, but did not. They lost that game.
I was warned in advance by my boss of seven
years and one of my broadcast mentors, Brad Sham, the
voice of Dallas Cowboys who's called many games in that stadium,
(09:37):
said it will be maybe the worst place you ever
broadcast a game from he said, unless you happen to
broadcast one in Miami there at hard Rock Stadium, because
that's a really bad spot in a really bad location.
But this was directly in the end zone, kind of
(09:59):
down low, so you got beyond like the thirty yard line,
forty yard line going on out and you really couldn't
see much, as he wed, have to use the television monitor,
except it was grainy. The picture was then because it
was raining, the roof was leaking. Now we also heard
about there were there's human sewage issues there that were
(10:20):
leaking there at that stadium.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
You name an issue, I mean, you name an issue,
it probably showed up in that stadium. Oh but don't worry.
Don't worry. There were new glass staircases built so that
Dan Snyder could act in appropriately.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
Yeah, yeah, right, right exactly. So anyway, I recalled.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
All of that.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
But the NFL season begins tomorrow night with Dallas playing
at Philadelphia. The Commanders open with the Giants right at home.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
At home, Giants come to the Northwest Stadium, Russell Wilson
getting the start, Jackson Dart, you were asking, yeah, on
the program the other where he would slot in QB
two ahead of James Winston.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
Yeah, yeah, got the number two spot there, so Giants
and Commanders play. I think, in fact, I'm going to
go over this when we get when we come out
of the break, because I always get asked about this.
There are people here in town who are pro football
fans who may or may not necessarily be big Dallas
(11:25):
Cowboy fans. That is immaterial to our conversation about the
Sunday because the Cowboys open the season tomorrow night, and
the game tomorrow night can be heard on our sister station,
ninety eight point one fmk VET. You can hear all
Cowboy games on ninety eight point one FMKVET, just as
(11:45):
you can hear all Long Worn Football games on ninety
eight point one FMKVET. That's important to remember specifically also
for this Saturday and for this Saturday in the next
two non conference games, because here on the Zone, even
though we will be bringing you the long wrn's game
day programming, we will have that, but the game itself
(12:09):
will be heard on ninety eight point one FM and
one O three point one FM. It will not be
heard on the Zone because of wrapping up the regular
season in September with the Round Rock Express. So, but
the pregame programming will be on the Zone and then
the game itself you here on ninety eight point one
FM Cave and also on one oh three point one
(12:31):
FM Austin's eighty station, so it'll be there on that.
But the questions that I get quite often in addition
to those, are about the selection of games that are
televised in the NFL in this state and in this market.
(12:56):
And as we know, Austin has become quite the melting
pot over time, so there are fans of a lot
of different teams, and the marketplace, the TV market, as
determined by the networks and the local affiliates, determine which
(13:17):
games will be televised in the area. Sometimes those decisions
are not popular, but I'm here to tell you that
coming up, I will tell you which games are going
to be on in this area and what the majority
of the country is going to.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
See this weekend. All right, so.
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Ready, all right, So we'll have Pitchfork and hen all right,
all right, so we'll have that coming up. So we
also want to invite you, as always, if you'd like
to text the program, feel free to do that. You
text the word texas follow by your question or comment
to eight one five to three zero. So text the
word texas. It can be all caps or just a
(13:56):
capital T, and then little EXAs however you want to
do it.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
But the word texas. You text that, and.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
Then right after that your question comment I didn't know
they were going to show such and such Again, whatever
you want to say, you put that in after the
word texas, and you just text that to eight one
five three zero. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
We'll get to that. We'll get to your questions today.
We have inconceivable we had a lot to come here
on a yacht rock Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
Let us not forget that as well.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
We got that coming your way right here on AM
thirteen under the zone. The unanswerable question there, but ten
sec gave it a shot anyway. There, Hey, it is
a yacht rock Wednesday here.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
On thirteen under the zone.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
So we do regale you with some yacht rock tunes
coming back like the things we do for love from
the Great ten cec. All right, there was a reason
why I asked you if you were a soccer fan,
and even gotten to the point I was asking about
it and then we got to talk about stadiums.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
And this and that and all that stuff.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
There is a reason I was asking that FIFA, the
Federation International Football Association, the governing body for the World Cup,
has unveiled the first steps in the ticketing process for
next year's World Cup. And of course, remember the US
(15:16):
is hosting the World Cup. I take it you've never
been to a World Cup game.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
No, I have not been to let's see South Africa.
I like to go to Paris.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
Yeah, right, and you would You were not even on
this planet the last time the US hosted it. Not
only was I on this planet, I did three of
the matches on national radio and the Cotton Bowl in
Dallas in nineteen ninety four, Nigeria against Bulgaria. So yes,
I got to talk about Kafoor trying to mark Risto Steiskoff.
(15:53):
So I had that. Bulgaria had a great run. They
got all over the semifinals that year.
Speaker 2 (15:57):
Then you have a gold call.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
You remember, it wasn't quite like Arturo Rabine or any
of those great or Andre's contour or any of those
good In other words, I didn't leave it going for
twenty five seconds or whatever. I also did Argentina Bulgaria
and it was the first game after uh Diego Maradona
(16:19):
was given the ban afterwards because of testing positive for
drugs and then and what I've to this day tell
people and live it and believe it one of the
greatest broadcast experiences of my life. One of the most
(16:40):
dynamic and exciting sporting events I ever had the privilege
to call. One of I said, one of, not the
most one of, but it fits in the category with
some of those great Texas games and things like that.
Is a World Cup quarterfinal between Brazil and the Netherlands.
So I had Brazil of Holland and it was in
(17:00):
the Cotton Bowl.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
Awesome uniform match. I was kit match.
Speaker 2 (17:03):
Yeah, I was the.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
Yellow and the blue of Brazil against the bright orange
of the Dutch and it was in the Cotton Bowl
and it was an incredible match and went back and forth.
It was a three to two match. Brazil ended up winning,
and of course they went on in one World Cup.
But the thing I remember is that's the first time
(17:27):
I really heard vuvazealas and the samba music and dancing
that was going on. There was an electricity that is
in that stadium that is never apparent at any other
time other than Texas OU. But Texas OU has its
different kind of electricity, so it was an amazing match
(17:48):
there in the heat of the summer of nineteen ninety four.
The other thing I'll remember is is that I went
to the first game there. I did not broadcast, but
went to the first game there between South Korea and German.
They played to a two to two tie. And then
I went and I had somebody picking me. I was
getting a ride back and I got in. And that
(18:08):
was the same day of the O. J. Simpson White
Bronco Chase and the and the Nix and Rockets in
the NBA Finals. I mean, this is the old thing
about where were you on June seventeen, nineteen ninety four,
I was walking out and getting into a car after
Germany South Korea. To to draw off of that, I
just I had credential, obviously, and so I went. And
(18:30):
our broadcast position was outside, actually it was on, but
we were covered by the overhang in the lower deck
of the Cotton Bowl, so we were up about halfway.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
Up in that It was good seat, it was a good,
good view.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
We did not have to work from the ABCHA, the International,
the IBC, the International Broadcast Center, which again will be
in the Dallas Fort Worth area this year.
Speaker 2 (18:53):
And we didn't have to work from.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
The broadcast center, you know, like we all became familiar
with later in doing remys calling from a studio. We
were actually in the stadium calling those matches. So it
was a lot of fun. So yeah, I had a
lot of fun with the World Cup. But here's the thing. So,
FIFA has unveiled the first steps in their ticketing process
for next year's World Cup. It is a process that
(19:19):
is going to use what they call dynamic pricing based
on demand.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
You know what that is, Yeah, that's that's you don't
know what you're going to see when you log into
those third party ticket apps. Yep, you're going to see
different prices at different days and different times, and it's
one of those things like when you're looking for a flight.
Sometimes the more you refresh it, the more it's going
to go up. Yeah, right, Well to your point. For now,
(19:48):
FIFA says, for now, single game ticket prices will range
from as low as sixty dollars for group stage matches.
You don't know who you're going to see though, right, right,
you won't have to find out about the draw. It's
like get the tennis ticket. You don't know who's going
to be there. Yeah, right, So it's sixty bucks for
(20:09):
a group stage match. But you're right, you might see
you know whatever, South Korea against Australia or something, and
you've got an expanded field. We won't go into all that, right, Yeah,
you really don't know who you're going to see, right, all.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
Right, it could be as low as sixty dollars that's
the lowest ticket price for a group stage match, to
six thousand, seven hundred and ten dollars for a spot
at the World Cup Final.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
Regardless of who the teams are.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Those prices might and likely will, as you just pointed out,
change somewhat over the coming months. From September tenth through
September nineteenth, fans who hold a visa card and have
registered for a FIFA ID, which is easily obtained through
the Governing Bodies website, can enter the pre sale draw.
(21:01):
Those who are selected through that draw will begin receiving
word on September twenty ninth, and will begin to be
able to purchase tickets starting October first. The sales will
be capped at four tickets per person per match, and
no person will be able to purchase more than forty
for the totality of the tournament. So if they bought
(21:23):
for ten matches, four as the most they could get
for anyone match.
Speaker 3 (21:26):
Here's the good news. You don't know who you're going
to see, but the World Cup they don't really overlap
any matches, right even with the new schedule, So you're
gonna get to see Tbusa if they're playing on the
same day as your tickets to Syria versus Japan. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Yeah, it's a good point.
Speaker 1 (21:42):
Haimo Shriji, who is the Chief Operating Officer for FIFA's
World Cup twenty twenty six, says, quote, I think the
message is message is get your tickets early, especially if
you know where you will be because you live in
that city, or you're a fan of the three hosting
nations and then you know already when and where they
(22:04):
will play. So that's the message, get your tickets early
because anything could happen. The tournament will run from June
eleventh to July nineteenth of next year. So far, thirteen
of the forty eight spots have been claimed. The United
States Canada and Mexico are assured World Cup spots as
the host nations. While raining, we don't have to worry
(22:25):
about Taylor twelve and.
Speaker 3 (22:26):
Go what are we doing? I say that all the time,
So what are we doing? Say it? When the US
didn't qualify the last time?
Speaker 1 (22:35):
The US, Canada, Mexico are assured World Cup spots as
the host nations. The reigning champion Argentina with Lanto Messi
and perennial power Brazil are among the teams that have
already secured qualification.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
The host nations will.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
Play all three of their group stage matches on home soil.
The US will open June twelfth in Los Angeles, them
play June nineteenth in Seattle, and again June twenty fifth
back in Los Angeles. So if you were thinking about
seeing them at Jerry World, you're not going to see
Team USA.
Speaker 3 (23:11):
Right in Dallas. Scott what a semifinal, right, So they
kind of took them out of the running to get
the US.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
Yes, that's right.
Speaker 1 (23:17):
By getting a semifinal in Arlington and Jerry World, you're
not going to see the US and they're not obviously
hosting the final. Canada will play June twelfth, in Toronto
June eighteenth and June twenty fourth, and Vancouver, British Columbia.
Mexico will play June eleventh and June twenty fourth of
Mexico City and they have a June eighteenth matching Guadalajara
(23:38):
as well. Fans can purchase tickets to follow a certain
team or they can purchase for a certain site. Dynamic
pricing was also used for this year's Club World Cup,
which saw ticket prices fluctuate wildly. Treji, the Chief operating officer, said,
it's key to highlight FIFA's mission and FIFA's objective of
(23:59):
providing funding, providing opportunities, providing grow to our support across
all the two hundred and eleven member association, and as
part of that mission, which we take very seriously, we're
looking at optimizing the revenue, of course you are, but
also optimizing attendance in the stadium, right, so it's always
a balance between different factors. FEEF anticipates intense demand for tickets,
(24:21):
which means that simply having a successful draw application does
not guarantee that fans will be able to purchase during
the time slot. That said, the pre sale draw marks
only the first phase of sales. Further ticket sales will
be launched in the coming months, giving all fans, including
those not part of the pre sale draw, the chance
to purchase, and a second phase is expected to have
(24:43):
another registration window from October twenty seven to thirty first,
with purchase slots there open from mid November to early December.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
And you're wondering when is the draw? Well, the third phase.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
There will be a third phase after the final draw
for the World Cup and the match schedule for group
play is finalized on December fifth, December fifth, just looking
at it. Here on the calendar, December fifth, by the way,
(25:17):
I wanted to get together, look at it. Yeah, yeah,
December fifth is the Friday, two days before the selection
sending for the college football Playoff.
Speaker 2 (25:29):
There will be a lot happening that weekend.
Speaker 3 (25:31):
So just everybody's finding out where they're going.
Speaker 1 (25:34):
Yeah, yeah, right, And then fans will have another chance
to buy remaining tickets on a first come, first or
basis closer to the start of the tournament.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
So there you are.
Speaker 1 (25:42):
If you're into it for FIFA, get ready because there's
a process that you have to go through for that
dynamic pricing. Yeah, and it's a unique euphemistic for it's
going to cost a ton of money for you to
go see a match.
Speaker 3 (25:57):
And it's a unique home country in that America has,
you know, all so many immigrants from so many different countries,
and maybe depending on where a team plays, it might
be easier or harder to fill a stadium. And that's
why you have maybe this coming into play.
Speaker 1 (26:13):
Yeah, indeed, all right, up next we bring Inconceivable second
hour of the program here on sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred The Zone. Craig Way alongside the producer Jay Carmon.
Glad to have you with us and pleased as always
to take your input on our text line. You text
the word Texas followed by your question or comment to
eight one five three zero. Again, just text the word
(26:36):
Texas follow by your question or comment to eight one
five three zero. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
You can also reach us if you want to leave
us a voice messaging, do that via our talk back feature.
What you do with that is you download the iHeartRadio
app free, real easy to do. So you download that,
(26:57):
then you search AM thirteen it'll pop up and when
it does, we suggest that you go ahead and just
make it a preset. Go ahead and make it at
your preset because when we do contesting, which we frequently do,
we use the talk back feature and that'll kind of
circumvent some of the longer line you might have to
(27:18):
get in with a shot to win something there. So
make it a preset. And then after you search AM
thirteen under the zone, what comes up is you'll see
two buttons. One is a little white button that's in
the shape of a triangle. There's another white button, but
it's or it's a red button, and it's got a
white microphone in it, and you push that button and
(27:40):
then you can leave us a voice passage up to
thirty seconds. That's our talkback feature. So we offer that
up for you as well. All Right, we're a couple
of things wanted to get to. One was a high
school football story. Now, as we know, this week is
a big week for high school football, second week of
(28:03):
the season.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
It starts tomorrow night.
Speaker 1 (28:05):
In fact, I'm joining Roger Wallace for call locally on
KBVO for Bowie and Vista Ridge at a Burger Stadium tomorrow.
And of course we're in the non district portion of
the season, but we are not far from district play
getting underway in fact next week. In District twenty five
(28:28):
six A they have nine schools, which means eight district games,
which means only two non district games, which means this
weekend is the final weekend of non district play. It's
different in twenty six to six A, which has AISD
schools like Aikins and Bowie and Austin High, also has
other schools like Dell Valley and Westlake and Lake Travis
(28:51):
and Dripping Springs. However, what I just ticked off there Aikins, Bowie,
Dell Valley, Austin High, Westlake, Drip and Lake Travis. Seven schools,
which means you play six six district games, so they
won't get into the district play for a couple more weeks.
But they do have district district games. There's a big
(29:12):
game non district game, inasmuch as non district games can
be looked at as being big games because they don't
count on whether you get a chance to advance to
the playoffs or not, but it can help prepare you
for the riggers of district play. Certainly that would be
the case with regard to twenty five to six A.
Which has nine schools in it. You have Hotto Manor,
(29:38):
Round Rock, McNeil, Stony Point, Westwood, Cedar Ridge, and Vandergriff.
Vander Riff, of course, of defending state champion in District
twenty five to six A. Vandergriff got summarily thumped by
Dripping Springs last week in the opener forty one to fourteen,
and now they play in a non district game. Cedar
(29:59):
par who also lost its season opener, gave up fifty
two points fifty two to thirty five loss to Harker Heights,
and that happened at home and at Gupton stadiums now.
Cedar Park will go out to Monroe to play Vandergriff
in the Viper's home opener. Five A Division one that
(30:23):
excuse me, that includes Cedar Park, Georgetown, Eastview, Leander, Glenn, Rouse, Clean, Chaparral,
and Lake Belton. So it's eight, which many coaches consider
to be the ideal amount of non district games. You
play three non district games and then you have seven
(30:47):
in the regular season. In fact, in District eight five
A Division one, which houses all those schools I just mentioned,
they all take an open date after the final non
district game, which is next week for those schools, they
take an open date in the district and then they
start district play coming off a bye week, and probably
(31:09):
a lot of coaches would find that as the best
way to go about it. That's especially true if you're
coming off a loss, or further extrapolated, if you're coming
off a losing season. However, in just about all of
these cases, when a team comes off a losing season,
(31:34):
they know they've got time to try to get things fixed,
at least during the course of the season. Now, they
may be a little bit under the gun, although the
job security for high school football coaches certainly is more
so than that of the collegiate variety, one would think,
but they would know that they have to get things
(31:55):
turned around probably that season. That's the case probably across
the country, with few exceptions, and two of those exceptions
just popped up this last week headline two high school
football coaches fired after the first game of the season.
It's almost belongs it inconceivable. Right now, we rarely hear
(32:20):
of college football coaches or even NFL head coaches who
are fired after one game, even if they had a
losing season the year before. But it has happened at
the high school level one week into the twenty twenty
five college football season. The NFL regular season begins tomorrow.
The high school football season is one plus week ind
(32:43):
of the year. There's other states that started the week
before this one did in Texas, but it's been an
unfortunate start for two notable high school football head coaches.
While no college football coaches ORFL coaches have been fired,
not yet anyway, two high school football coaches have been
(33:05):
fired prior to their team's respective second game of the season.
One is in Georgia. It's a public school, Banks County
High School. I think it's important also to discern the
difference between the public and the private schools.
Speaker 2 (33:21):
Private schools.
Speaker 1 (33:24):
Are quite often categorized competitively in other states, vastly different
than in Texas. In Texas, there are only two private
schools who actually play in the UIL system, Jesuit College
Prep in Dallas and Straight Jesuit in Houston. Everything else
is under the larger Texas Association of Private and Parochial
(33:47):
Schools TAPS as we know it, but it's all kind
of in one melting pot. In several other states, but
the private schools are excuse me, are different than the
public schools in that sort of thing, and quite often
they're different in terms.
Speaker 3 (34:03):
Of their job security. I would say.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
So, here's a public school in Georgia, Banks County High School.
They were coming off a two and eight season. They
played East Hall last weekend. Forty two to twenty one
was the final. East Hall was the winner. So Banks
(34:27):
County starts at season zero to one and the head
coach was fired. Todd Winter, entering his second season, just
to second season as head coach after they went to
and eight last year, was fired after one game and
replaced with the offensive coordinator, Mark Hollers. The school superintendent,
(34:48):
Doctor Ann Hopkins said, quote, We're excited to announce that
Coach Mark Hollers will serve as the new head football.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
Coach at Banks County High School.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
Coach Hollers has committed to building a strong, unified program
that reflects the values of teamwork, discipline, and pride in
being a Leopard. We look forward to the future of
Banks County football under his leadership and are confident this
new chapter will bring fresh energy and focus to our program.
We are appreciative at the time and commitment coach Todd
Winner has given to our student athletes apparently not appreciative enough.
(35:23):
So that's a public school high school football coach was fired.
There's a private school head coach who's been at it
for a while and he lost his job as well,
although there are other circumstances involved. Here in Torrance, California,
Southern California is Bishop Montgomery High School. They lost to
(35:47):
one of the perennial powers in high school football across
the nation, Saint Louis High School in Honolulu, Hawaii and Honolulu.
Saint Louis beat Bishop Montgomery BISHO. Montgomery was due to
play Modern Day this week. Modern Day is the number
one ranked high school football team in the country. Now,
(36:09):
if you're asking me, I'm always a little dubious of
the national high school rankings because teams can never play
one another. Modern Day has an outstanding program, no doubt
about it. But you know, some of the best programs,
I think six A programs in Texas can hang with them.
(36:30):
They did thump Duncanville pretty good a few years ago.
But anyway, Bishop Montgomery was due to play Modern Day
this week. The school, which is a private school, Bishop
Montgomery fired head coach ed Hodgkiss.
Speaker 3 (36:48):
And you'd say, okay, is he a newbie?
Speaker 1 (36:51):
Nope, the guy was in his sixteenth year as head
coach of the school. I he say, just for losing
the game win? Well, apparently there's some other circumstances. First
of all, they fired Hodgkiss after the team was forced
to forfeit their Week two game. Several players were suspended
(37:13):
following a brawl in Week one. Others were ruled ineligible
due to falsifying documents. The release said, we write today
to share that mister Edge Hodgkiss is no longer employed
at Mishop Montgomery High School. We're grateful for his years
of dedication and service to our students and community. We
keep him and his family and our prayers, asking God
(37:34):
to bless them in this next chapter. School and archdioceis
and policy require that personnel matters remain confidential, but should
you have concerns, please contact the main office and the
school administration will respond as appropriate. Please be assured of
our commitment to all our families through this transition, as
we continue to determine next steps for fulfilling the roles
(37:56):
that mister Hodgkiss served both both those schools are moving
forward interim head coaches now, So that's an odd deal.
It's a strange thing. And when you started hearing about
falsifying things and documents, it makes it think of that
Bishop Sycamore, the fake high school a few years ago
that had a program and didn't really have a high
(38:17):
school per se, and that eventually was found out to
be fraudulent. This is an actual school, but some falsification
of documents I think is at hand there.
Speaker 3 (38:29):
And there's a story out today about possible pay for
players to transfer into the school and that is still
under investigation after a booster admitted to paying football parents
at three different area schools from twenty fifteen to now.
Speaker 1 (38:51):
That's high school football we're talking about, not college football.
And by the way, nil, it's legal for high school
student athletes in California. But what is not illegal is
paying them to transfer from one school to another. That
part isn't and that's where apparently Bishop Montgomery got hung
(39:12):
up in that. And it's probably a good idea they
forfeiting the game to modern day anyway, because that could
be a real ugly situation with that one.
Speaker 3 (39:21):
Yeah, and Bishop Montgomery not necessarily implicated in this story.
But a person who has been implicated was a part
of their staff over the summer, and they landed more
than twenty transfers this season. Those are being investigated.
Speaker 1 (39:34):
Wow, Okay, so there you have it. Meanwhile, schools go
back to work getting ready high schools.
Speaker 3 (39:42):
You know.
Speaker 1 (39:42):
Some of the bigger eye opening results of the week
included I mentioned Vandergrift falling Topping Springs course coach dimmer
and Zimmerman and his staff to a fine job there
a drip And so maybe that's a little less surprising
than Westlake losing to Prosper. Prosper played them pretty competitively
(40:06):
last year, and they played up at Mary Hart and
Baylor again and.
Speaker 2 (40:10):
And and lost this time twenty nine two.
Speaker 1 (40:12):
Westlake goes down to the Valley this week to play
San Benito on the road. Vander Griffin and Cedar Park
play on Friday night at Monroe Stadium. That game, by
the way, is a live telecast streaming through Victory Plus.
Speaker 2 (40:28):
That's the sports.
Speaker 1 (40:29):
App that that that's free that televises the Dallas Stars games.
And so I'll be on the call on that one
on Friday night when Vandergriff plays Cedar Park. But there's
really good games around the area, including Vista Ridge of
Booey tomorrow night that's on KBVO, and Round Rocks playing Temple.
(40:50):
Also in addition to that, Westwoods playing Austin High. It's
an old traditional game those two got, and what could
be a really high scoring game on the road. Lake
Travis goes up to Rockwall. Lake Travis very impressive in
blowing out Arlington Martin in that regular season opener, and
Rockwall won its season opener. That could be an offensive
(41:12):
shootout up in Rockwall. All right, up next we shift
back to pro football, and I promise this at the
start of the program, we were going to compile the
information and tell you what games we're going to be
all not only in this area this week on this
opening weekend of the NFL season, but across the country
as well. Some of those numbers, and usually every week
(41:36):
there is a matchup that's televised in a certain area
or in a large area of the country that winds
up surprising a lot of people and displeasing, certainly disappointing
and displeasing some folks as well. We'll get to that
when we continue right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
under the Zone then the free iHeartRadio app there on
a yacht rock Wednesday here on thirteen under the Zone.
So Jay Carmon, who's a play by play guy in
(41:58):
his own right as well, you've got some soccer coming up,
You're going.
Speaker 3 (42:01):
To do right, Yeah, going up to Southwestern University.
Speaker 1 (42:04):
Those good old pirates there just down there, just gosh
across the interstate practically from where I live, not far away.
So anyway, we were talking about stuff that would be
probably be mundane and boring to a lot of folks.
But I always do seem to get questions about this.
And this is why when I post something on Instagram
(42:27):
or a photo that I put on X or whatever,
something I tweet out on a game day, I usually
include in somewhere in the photo or the video, the
broadcast boards, the broadcast charts, spawning charts. The reason why
I get a lot of questions about them. And first
(42:49):
I should tell you my son and he's been doing
him since he was fourteen, I think, and he's thirty
five now seems doing them while he does a really
fine job with him and uh. And then and then
what I do is then I upload them. I send
them uh to like office depot and then they print
them out on card stock and then I have them
(43:10):
put like one of those thick hard laminations on it
and uh. And the reason why I do that is,
you know, it'd be windy and some of the player
I just went some of the high school football games
that I've done to be a little windy, and so
this would offer a little more stability. But there's another
(43:30):
reason for doing it this way. These charts are very colorful,
they're very easy to read, all that other kind of stuff.
One thing they are not is waterproof. And when Texas
played Central Florida in two thousand and seven, we were
talking about the game yesterday with Jeff Colhane, the Florida
(43:52):
State played by play voice because Florida State won that game,
as we know, last Saturday in Tallahassee over Alabama.
Speaker 3 (44:00):
Conversations on YouTube if you missed it yesterday.
Speaker 2 (44:02):
Oh yeah, yeah, good good.
Speaker 1 (44:03):
And you can go to our podcast page right at
the thirteen under the Zone dot com to do that
to hear it.
Speaker 2 (44:10):
But anyway, we.
Speaker 1 (44:12):
Were talking about at times it was torrential rain downpour
and then it finally stopped and it was nice and
all that other kind of stuff. And we're talking about
covering up their equipment and things like that. There was
a similar thing like that that happened in two thousand
and seven. Texas was playing Central Florida UCF at the
(44:33):
brand new in fact, they were christening the new stadium.
It was called BrightHouse Networks Stadium. It's called something else now.
It's got a different sponsored name, brand new stadium, and
Texas had built a lead. But then a storm came
through and it was raining sideways and was coming in
(44:57):
the booth. That just so happens, and I had already
started to laminate the broadcast boards, but I didn't have
time that week or what I went through my normal process.
They were out of laminate. They didn't have any to
any sheets to laminate the word. And I was like, ah,
I don't worry about it.
Speaker 3 (45:13):
And I went on.
Speaker 1 (45:14):
So I'm doing the game, and this rain starts coming
down in Torrents and it starts blowing into the booth,
and as I said, they're not waterproof, so the colors
start to run down the charts and I have to
pick them up and hold them.
Speaker 2 (45:31):
In my lap.
Speaker 3 (45:32):
I think I've had a nightmare about this.
Speaker 1 (45:34):
Oh yeah, And then when Texas came out the locker room.
They it was about an hour and fifteen minute I
think delay, And when they came out, the storm had passed,
sun was out and it was just like a steam
bath a sauna, and the guys were like sucking wind.
To get through that game, Texas had to hold on.
They won like thirty five thirty two Kevin Smith. It
(45:57):
was a good running back at UCF one went on
and played in the NFL for a while, had like
one hundred and fifty rushing yards in a game.
Speaker 2 (46:02):
Texas survived that game, but it was tough.
Speaker 1 (46:05):
But I said at that time, I am never going
to call a Texas game with unlaminated charts ever again.
Speaker 3 (46:12):
If I can help it.
Speaker 1 (46:13):
Even working inside like say in Mercedes Benz Stadium there
for the Peach Bowl or the SEC Championship or Jerry
World for the Cotton Bowl, liquids can get spilled on it,
you know, water or coffee or something like that, So
it just adds a little more stability to it. So anyway,
that's the story behind laminating the spotting boards. Okay, back
(46:36):
to the NFL. This starts off with this is the
story that Anthony Rizzuti who writes for the Carolina Panthers.
Panthers Wire writes this, so this is why his question
is an open ended question of fans. Will you be
(46:56):
able to tune into the Carolina Panthers regular season opener
against the Jacksonville Jaguars is Sunday. Here are the television
broadcast maps and announcers for every game in Week one
of the twenty twenty five campaign. So H five oh
six sports dot Com puts these maps out to you
look them up for that. But first of all, Thursday Night,
(47:19):
Tomorrow Night, Cowboys Eagles on NBCM Peacock, miketerre Co, Chris Collinsworth,
Melissa Stark. Friday Night, remember there's a game in Sapaula, Brazil,
Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers. That's a YouTube telecast
with Rich Eisen and Kurt Warner, Sunday Night Football and NBC.
Speaker 2 (47:38):
Their first one is.
Speaker 1 (47:41):
The Ravens and the Bills Mike Terree Co, Chris Collinsworth,
Melissa Stark. Monday night season opening Monday Night telecast is
the Vikings and Bears Joe Buck, Troy and Lisa Salters
on that.
Speaker 2 (47:54):
Okay, now here comes.
Speaker 1 (47:56):
The other thing, the early Sunday Window has these games
Steelers and Jets with Iron Eagle, JJ Watt and Evan Washburn,
Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, Andrew Catalan, Charles Davis, Jason mccordy
and A J. Ross, Raiders and Patriots, Spirodidas, Adam Rchaletta,
Addi King, Koba Bwallah and the Cardinals and Saints, Tom McCarthy, Ross,
(48:22):
Tucker Logan, Ryan, Tiffany Blackman. The Late Window on Sunday
Packers Lions on CBS, Jim Nance, Tony Romo, Tracy Wolfson
and Texans Rams, Kevin Harland, Trent Green, Melanie Collins. The
Fox Window on Sunday Giants Commanders Jacob get Kevin Burkhart,
(48:43):
Tom Brady and Aaron.
Speaker 3 (48:44):
Andrews on that. So you get the lead lead Fox
team on that one. That'll be three in a row
for the Commanders with Brady and.
Speaker 1 (48:50):
Rockhart, Bucks and Falcons, Cuddy Albert, Jonathan Vilma and Meghan Olivi,
Begels Browns, Kevin Coogler, Daryl Johnston, Allison Williams So also Panthers, Jaguars,
Chris Meyers, Mark schlerit Zen Hale forty nine or Seahawks,
(49:11):
Joe Davis, greg Olds and Pam Oliver. This is the
late Fox window. They only have two late window games
Tennessee Titans, Denver Broncos Adam of Me and Mark Sanchez
Christina Peak. All right, so what they do is you
see these coverage maps that come out and tells you
know which portion of the country is liable to get
(49:34):
the majority game. So the early game. The early games
I mentioned are Steelers, Jets, Dolphins, Colts, Vegas Raiders against Patriots,
and Cardinals Saints. Okay, so then the late game and
(49:55):
they show that as being the national game. Those other
games go the markets you'd expect New York, Pittsburgh, Miami, Indianapolis,
Las Vegas, New England, Arizona, New Orleans. The late game,
the doubleheader game, Packers Lions. About eighty five percent of
the country is going to get that, but almost all
(50:20):
of the state of Texas is going to get the
Texans and the Rams. So I'm so you're happy. Oh yeah,
I'm happy about that. And it's in it's in southern California,
and then it's all of the state of Texas except
the Dallas Fort Worth market, which I find interesting because
the Cowboys aren't playing.
Speaker 3 (50:39):
At all, but oh, please show them the commanders. I
think they're going to get that because that division two.
Speaker 1 (50:49):
Yes, in fact, I'll tell you right now, yep, you're
getting giants and commanders. So so to let you know
early windows Sunday for Fox is going to be giants
and commanders here in this market, as opposed to Buccaneers Falcons.
Speaker 2 (51:11):
That's going to a lot of the Deep South.
Speaker 1 (51:14):
The rest of the South is going to get the
Panthers and Jaguars, including a chunk of Florida. But most
of Florida is going to get Tampa Bay, but not all.
In the Miami area they're getting giants commanders. Actually they're
getting giants commanders is just north of Miami, the West
(51:40):
Palm Beach area. But Miami itself is going to get
the Lake game Titans Broncos. Now that has to do
with you know, if you have a game in the
early window, which would do Miami, so the late game
would be That's why they're getting that. So anyway, there's
always that it's very colorful to look at what, you know,
(52:02):
what areas of the country are going to get, which
games Benggels and Browns. Yeah, state of Ohio, West Virginia,
and parts of Kentucky and eastern Indiana.
Speaker 2 (52:14):
But that's about it.
Speaker 3 (52:15):
I would tell you to just sit back and watch
Red Zone. But did you hear the news today, Craig.
Speaker 2 (52:21):
There's news today about Red Zone.
Speaker 3 (52:23):
ESPN is planning to put full length commercials into Red
Zone this season.
Speaker 2 (52:29):
You knew that was coming. They weren't going to spend
that kind of money on that.
Speaker 1 (52:33):
And we would see commercials occasionally on Red Zone, but
not often. It was with and it was usually when
there were there were stoppages or at halftime that you
might see a one or two minute break.
Speaker 2 (52:45):
But that's it. The rest of the time, you're getting
Scott Hansen.
Speaker 3 (52:48):
How about just some audio ads. Leave the football on
the screen or do you like to.
Speaker 1 (52:53):
Do in golf and do it, you know, just put
the spot in silence there in.
Speaker 2 (52:58):
A quarter of the screen.
Speaker 3 (52:59):
Scott deserves a bathroom break. But I wanted to happen
like this. I just hope that the witching hours preserved.
Just give us a commercial free witching hour.
Speaker 1 (53:08):
Yeah, yeah, we'll see. We'll see if that happens. So
it'll be interesting to watch. I used to have NFL
Sunday Ticket for twenty three years I had when it
moved to YouTube, and I've been.
Speaker 2 (53:21):
The Direct TV customer for a long time. I don't
know very much longer.
Speaker 3 (53:24):
No, my dad's one of the last Direct TV loyalists
out there for Sunday Ticket.
Speaker 4 (53:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (53:28):
Well, and I was like that in part. That's a
big reason why I got it to begin with. But
at that time, when I got in the late nineties,
you couldn't get the MLB Extra Innings package or the
NBA package on anything but that at the time. Now
that eventually went away and it branched out and you
can get it on pretty much any platform. But I
(53:49):
just kind of kept it and got used to it
all these years. But now it's kind of pricing itself
out of my price range. So I don't know how
much longer I'm going to hold on. I still have
red zone though, for it.
Speaker 3 (54:00):
To join the cord cutting parade.
Speaker 2 (54:02):
Well, it may happen.
Speaker 1 (54:04):
It may happen, but I've got to make sure I
can get everything I need the other stuff, because I
know when you do a lot of those digital streaming platforms,
you'd lose your local affiliates.
Speaker 3 (54:13):
And they're also cracking down only legal streams today, two
arrests made in Egypt and stream East is now history?
About that?
Speaker 2 (54:22):
How about that?
Speaker 1 (54:23):
All right, Well, we've got some other topics to get to.
We'll continue on that right here on Sports Radio AM
thirteen under the Zone in the irt Radio app. We
live in a society of Mount Rushmore builders. We're big
on your mount Rushmore, your mount Rushmore of quarterbacks, your
Mount Rushmore of ice cream flavors, your mount Rushmore of automobiles.
(54:50):
There's also you could say a mount Rushmore of yacht rock.
And if you were talking groups, Vans Toto is certain
in that has to be on that Mount Rushmore of
the hot rock. They are, after all, one of the
kind of founding fathers, if you will, of the genre.
Speaker 3 (55:09):
I know the hits there you go and hold the
line right Africa yeap Rosanna?
Speaker 4 (55:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (55:15):
Yeah? Can you name any others? There's four on Mount
Rushmore and I've got three heads.
Speaker 1 (55:22):
Well anyway, that's they would be up there much as
teely Dan, as Donald Fag would like to tell you say, otherwise,
they would be up there on it. Just listen to
the whole Asia album that's yat Rock Painted all over it.
There's other ones as well, if you're doing individual artists.
Obviously Michael McDonald I always say he's the godfather of it.
(55:45):
You could put Doobie Brothers in it later Doobie Brothers
in it in in theacht rock predicular. But anyway, Roseanna
certainly one of those tunes that goes up there. Somebody
asked me, uh, what's your what is your lead in
music at the top of each hour? I guess you're
talking about when we start each hour, right, Yeah, you
(56:07):
get eminent front, eminence front from the who opens up
the program. And also I don't know if it still
does this. It was also the music to which the
Dallas Maverick starting lineup would be introduced.
Speaker 3 (56:21):
ESPN uses it so often coming in and out of
break that I got DJAVU when I came to start
working for your show.
Speaker 1 (56:28):
I've been doing it a long time. Yeah, I'm sure
you were first. No probably not first.
Speaker 3 (56:33):
No, not first you meet ESPN.
Speaker 1 (56:35):
Yeah, I've been doing it, well, it's been several years.
But anyway, I mean it goes back to when I
was here the first time. That's the two o'clock hour,
the three o'clock hours from Steely Dann It's Body Satva,
which is off of the Countdown the Ecstasy album, and
the four o'clock hour is that's not her style, that's
(56:58):
Billy Joel off Storm Front.
Speaker 2 (57:01):
Those are the hour opens that we have.
Speaker 1 (57:04):
And then of course, like we say, we had different
bump music coming in and out of breaks, and then
on a yacht rock Wednesday, we just it's a checkerboard.
Speaker 2 (57:13):
We hit all the genres of yacht rock.
Speaker 1 (57:16):
And really, when I say all of the genres, it
is a genre in and of itself into itself, unto itself,
but there are edges of it out further out. Because
it's usually described as being late seventies to early eighties,
it really does go beyond the boundaries of that. If
(57:38):
you ever heard Brandy by looking Glass, you know, was
in Guardians of the Galaxy, I think that that's nineteen
seventy two, but that's yacht rock. Ride Captain Ride from
Blues Image, I think that's seventy one, maybe seventy two.
Speaker 2 (57:57):
That is yat rock.
Speaker 1 (57:58):
If you hear with a smooth Operator, that's nineteen ninety
that's yacht rock.
Speaker 2 (58:05):
It's a genre. Sometimes it's a state of mind. More
so than an actual being pigeonholed into a date. That's
what somebody said talking about sports and suspensions with that,
with that wide eyed emoji. Look, unfortunately, it does seem
(58:25):
to happen more more than it has in the past.
And what was the crackdown you mentioned over there in
the Egypt going up? Was that was with fantasy football?
Speaker 3 (58:34):
That was a streaming website, okay called stream East for
pirrating streams.
Speaker 2 (58:41):
That's pretty far east, is what that is.
Speaker 1 (58:43):
Yeah, because there are a lot of people who do that,
don't they, or a lot of people who like to
take advantage of that, and if they hear about, hey,
if you go to such and such a stream and
run it through your firestick or or something like that,
you can pull up a game in your area you're
(59:04):
not supposed to see, or some pay per view thing
that you're not supposed to see unless you paid for
to or a subscriber or whatever. But people are always
looking for a workaround on those things.
Speaker 3 (59:14):
Usually it's a type of website where you click past
a few ads. You got to be pretty careful where
you click, but you can watch almost anything, but there
are risks that come with it. One time I got
a computer virus from doing something like that. Did you really, Yeah, Craig,
I was in college, you know, three years ago. I'm
no stranger for the world to be legally streaming sports.
Speaker 2 (59:35):
That's a good point. That's a good point, I guess.
Speaker 3 (59:38):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (59:38):
So our point is be careful if you're doing that.
And in a lot of cases, all roads lead back
to money and gambling and that sort of stuff. By
the way, the Cowboys Eagles game tomorrow night is expected
to be among the most bet regular season and games
(01:00:01):
certainly of the year, and maybe even of all time
of the regular season. It's it is written that by
the time the last bet is placed on tomorrow's opener,
gambling experts estimate that hundreds of millions of dollars will
be on the line across the nation, not just just
(01:00:25):
with US sports books alone, not including how much is
in play at daily fantasy sites, prediction markets, offshore sports books,
and local bookmakers. So they're saying the Cowboys Eagles game
is going to take a lot of money. Betting volume
does dip during the summer before just really you know,
(01:00:49):
take it off. In the month of September, Colorado sports
books reported taking one hundred and seventy three million in
bets on pro football last September. That's nearly as much
as we bet on baseball in the months of July
and August combined. According to the Colorado Department of Revenue,
the NBA and NHL seasons beginning mid to late October,
(01:01:09):
and football is reaching its half way point. Johnny Avello, boy,
doesn't it sound like he works as a Las Vegas
book maker and he does a forty year Las Vegas
book maker. Johnny Avello.
Speaker 3 (01:01:22):
I could picture him, arms cross, standing behind the desk.
Speaker 1 (01:01:25):
Yeah, what do you want? He's the sportsbook director at
DraftKings as well. He said, you get the countdown of
the NFL one hundred and eighty one days to football
all off season. When football gets here, the betters do
have money set aside. So Ed Salmons, who's a veteran
Las Vegas odds maker with a Westgate superbook, were called
(01:01:46):
the spike and betting interest that occurred after the pandemic
coming back in twenty twenty oney. So when COVID happened
and the world stopped and baseball started back up. I
remember the first week of baseball. Our hand was never
seen anything like it. They just wanted to bet be
(01:02:07):
careful out there with your aging. We'll be back to
wrap up the hour on thirteen under the Zone on
this final hour of a yacht Rock Wednesday. Glad to
be joining in there with a couple of NFL notes
here and then what we're going to do in this
how we're going to have a conversation with Ken Neo
Matta Lolo, the head coach of the San Jose State Spartans.
(01:02:27):
Of course, Texas plays San Jose State this Saturday morning.
Speaker 2 (01:02:31):
It's an eleven am kick.
Speaker 1 (01:02:32):
It's an eight am start time from Bevo Boulevard with
Long Orange Game Day with Cameron Parker and Mike Hardball, Harja,
Mark Henry. That comes your way from the Winship Circle
area over at Bevo Boulevard, and that'll be Saturday morning
at eight am. Starts our local pregame show, the network
pre game we'll follow at ten o'clock and the kickoff
(01:02:53):
at eleven. Roger Wallerson, Will Matthews will join before the
call of the game Texas and San Jose State. It
will be see time these two teams will play. The
other time happen also after the Long Orange drop they
season opener. It was eight years ago, twenty seventeen, and
it was Tom Herman's first game as head coach at
(01:03:15):
Texas when they lost to Maryland at home fifty one
forty one back in twenty seventeen. That was almost eight
years to today, September ninth of twenty seventeen, and Texas
took it out on the Spartans that day. They won
fifty six to nothing in that contest. So we'll see
how the Long Orangs do this week. A reminder, tomorrow evening,
(01:03:39):
we'll be bringing you Longhorn Weekly with Long Horns head
coach Tive Sarkisian. We record the program today over on campus,
but you'll hear the program tomorrow evening at seven o'clock
with Coach sark. We've got special guests including that speaking
of special special teams coordinator coach Jeff Banks, who also
is the tight ends coach, and Cole McCoy joins us
(01:04:02):
the lifetime Longhorn. So that'll be tomorrow night at seven o'clock.
Longhorn Weekly with Coach sark also tomorrow night, and this
will get us into the NFL season opener for the
Dallas Cowboys. They take on the Philadelphia Eagles, the defending
Super Bowl champions. So much conversation about what the Cowboys
(01:04:24):
did and did not do in the offseason, and one
thing that was interesting is that David Mullageta, the agent
for Micah Parsons, said this morning he was on ESPN's
first day. He said his Micah Parsons first choice always
(01:04:44):
was to remain a cowboy. Said he had never planned
to sit out this season, would have played for the
Cowboys tonight if he had not been traded. Mulageda said
the Cowboys were never told that Parsons would not play.
Speaker 2 (01:04:57):
Never.
Speaker 1 (01:04:58):
Mullagetta said, I mean loves the game too much. He's
going to play no matter what. In fact, Mullagata contended
that parsons first choice was always to remain in Dallas.
The quote was, I think the most important thing is
Michael wanted to be a cowboy. He grew up cheering
for the Cowboys. We're the Blue and White. While at
Penn State were in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys.
He wanted to be a cowboy, and we did everything
(01:05:18):
we could for him to remain a cowboy. However, Mullagetta
said the Cowboys would not negotiate with him, since owner
and general manager Jerry Jones believed he had reached an
agreement on a deal directly with Parsons following their meeting
back on March eighteenth.
Speaker 2 (01:05:35):
Here's the quote.
Speaker 1 (01:05:36):
If you're a then twenty five year old football player
and your boss, who happens to be the most powerful
person in the NFL, starts talking about contracts, it's hard
for you to end that conversation. So they had a conversation,
is what Mullagetta said. Michael nodded his head out of respect. Obviously,
there's a power dynamic that's a little different there. One
guy's the owner of the team, and the GM and
(01:05:57):
the others Michael Parsons a young twenty five five year
old football players. So I'm not sure if there was
miscommunication there by the time Michah walked out, But at
no point did Michaeh believe they that he was negotiating
a contract end quote. Jones, of course, has contended otherwise.
He said he believed he had a handshake agreement with Parsons.
(01:06:18):
The Cowboys have negotiated directly with players.
Speaker 2 (01:06:20):
In the past.
Speaker 1 (01:06:21):
It's not explicitly in violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement
because there's different ways to interpret what is a negotiation
and one is just a conversation, so it's not necessarily
a violation of the collective marketing Agreement. Muligeta said that
he reached out several times before then and after that
(01:06:44):
meeting to inquire about negotiations, but though the Cowboys weren't
interested in talking. Sources told ESPN that Mlagedta never made
an actual offer to the Cowboys. The agent said, quote
to expect somebody like Michah Parsons to be one of
the best defenders in the NFL and also a great
lawyer when it comes to contracts, I think is a
(01:07:05):
little bit unfair. His job is to go out there
and chase quarterbacks, and our job is to go out
there and chase Commas or him. I'm not sure exactly
why it went this way, but we were always prepared
and open to negotiating a contract with the Jones family.
Of course, Parsons ended up signing that four year, one
hundred and eighty eight million dollar contract extension and Jerry
(01:07:26):
Jones to the Cowboys. Off offer was for the largest
guaranteed money for a non quarterback in NFL history. A
source told ESPN it was north of one hundred and
fifty million at the time of the supposed agreement. The
average of forty point five million dollars per year from
the Cowboys would have made Parsons the highest paid defensive
(01:07:47):
player based on the average per year. I think that's
probably why Jerry so excited about what he did with
the trade, because he had to pay forty seven million
a year, which is what the Packers are going to
play pay for the four year deal. So the biggest
difference in the offers from the Cowboys and the Packers.
Speaker 2 (01:08:03):
There's the money, but there's also the length.
Speaker 1 (01:08:05):
The Cowboys offer was a five year extension, which in
Mulgetta's mind, could have cost Parsons sixty to seventy million
dollars in future earning, So you're talking about on down
the road. His quote was, that's why I say the
devil is in the details now, and of course the
Packers did a four year deal with him. Parsons did
practice with the Packers this week, appear to be a
(01:08:27):
limited participant early in the week because of that back
injury that mullagettis has been treated with anti inflammatories. It
could require additional treatment for Parsons to play in the
Packers season opener against the Detroit Lions on Sunday. His
quote was, what I will tell you is that Micah
is going to do everything he can possibly do to
(01:08:48):
get on the football field the same way he did
when he was in a Cowboys jersey. Mulgeta's partner, by
the way, at Athletes First is Trayvon Smith. He represents
George Pickens, the Cowboys recent required receiver. He's in the
final year of his contract. We look at us, said,
any ild feelings created by the Parsons situation would not
impact Pickens' chances of remaining in Dallas. The quote was,
(01:09:11):
there's nothing personal here. It's a business transaction as far
as the contracts concerned. It's the same thing Jerry Jones
said to you. There's this is all business. It's not personal.
So if George Pickens does what we expect him to do,
which is be one of the best receivers in the
NFL this year, we'll have those conversations with the Cowboys,
and if they're open open to having that dialogue with
(01:09:33):
us and negotiate a long term deal, then we'd love
for George Pickens to be a star with the star
on his helmet. If that's not the case, then we'll
see what else is out there for him. Hey, for
those of us who have George Pickens on our fantasy
football teams, we hope that's the case as well. So
I'm curious, Jake, you grew up in the Washington, DC
(01:09:53):
area and you were a and still are died in
the wool first Redskins, Washington football team now Washington Commander's fan.
Speaker 2 (01:10:03):
Correct. That's okay.
Speaker 1 (01:10:06):
By the way, when they and we've had this conversation
about Washington football team, my wife thought that was the
best name. She even had me order her a long
sleeve T shirt that has Washington football team on the
sleeves on that. Did people just not get behind that?
Speaker 2 (01:10:20):
Did you like it?
Speaker 3 (01:10:20):
Did you not like it?
Speaker 2 (01:10:21):
That deal?
Speaker 3 (01:10:22):
I was okay with it. I think part of it
is because they, you know, had that good season in
twenty twenty, remember Chase Young's rookie year. Yeah, I was
okay with it because any attention that was positive attention
for the franchise at that time was a win. That's
a good point. That's a good point.
Speaker 1 (01:10:37):
Okay. So as a Washington fan, a lifelong Washington fan,
and you mentioned the the I don't know if unusual is.
Speaker 2 (01:10:49):
The right word.
Speaker 1 (01:10:50):
Maybe not an ordinary type of fandom that your father
has sported over the years.
Speaker 3 (01:10:55):
Right, well, yes, he's he's still Alabama bleeding crim.
Speaker 2 (01:11:00):
Okay, all right, because he lived in Alabama.
Speaker 3 (01:11:02):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (01:11:03):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (01:11:04):
And he's a Falcons fan too, Okay, that's where I
was going with the Saints fan last week.
Speaker 1 (01:11:08):
Yeah, yeah, but he was a Falcons fan. Falcons fan,
not a Washington fan, even though you lived inside the
Beltway or outside or close to.
Speaker 3 (01:11:14):
Yeah. Well yeah, when he moved to DC was inside
the Beltway for a while, but he stuck with it.
I mean at the time, the you know, Redskins were
in somewhat of a quarterback carousel. Yeah right, right, and
they had their their Browns moment as far as QBS
were concerned, from about the first ten to fifteen years.
Speaker 1 (01:11:32):
The team I rooted for, the Rams, went through all
of that until they landed on Kurt Warner by accident,
you know, when they had Tony Banks, and I guess
Trent Green would have been the guy had he not
torn up his knee in a preseason gave me It's
Kansas City, and this unknown named Kurt Warner took over
in ninety nine and leads him to the Super Bowl.
So I guess all teams go through that. So my
(01:11:52):
question to you, as a longtime Washington pro football fan,
who did you in complete transparent here now? Who'd you
dislike more? The Eagles are the Cowboys? How would you
view a game like the one tomorrow night going on
in Philadelphia?
Speaker 3 (01:12:09):
I probably used to root for the Eagles.
Speaker 2 (01:12:12):
Oh oh really?
Speaker 3 (01:12:12):
I mentioned my next door neighbor was was a Dallas Cowboy. Yes,
that's right, and they were, you know, louder and prouder
than some of the Eagles fans that I knew. Now,
as I've gone through life, right and even spent lots
of lots of time in Texas, I've learned and met
a lot more Philadelphia fans. There's some of my work
in the Northeast, and you know, just random people that
(01:12:34):
I've met. I've flipped. Really, I will now probably be
rooting against the Eagles, but mostly because they're the Commander's
biggest threat to win the division at the moment, and
the rightfle favorites to win the division. Sure, I might add,
So it's still not going to be it's still not
going to be upsetting if the Cowboys lose.
Speaker 1 (01:12:55):
You're not feeling all warm and fuzzy for Jerry's team,
is what you're saying.
Speaker 3 (01:12:59):
No, I mean, I've I feel a little bit bad
for the Giants and their front office has made some
rough moves over the last few years. But they got
their two Super Bowls.
Speaker 1 (01:13:07):
Yeah, right, right, exactly. Now, the Eagles have two Super Bowls.
They beat the Patriots at the Philly Special and then
they beat the Chiefs, so they've got two.
Speaker 2 (01:13:16):
So everybody send me back going you know it.
Speaker 1 (01:13:20):
You know, the Cowboys and Washington have gone the longest
now without winning a Super Bowl. But at least Washington
got into the NFC Championship game. The Cowboys hadn't been
there in thirty years. So we'll see how all of
that goes.
Speaker 3 (01:13:34):
Aaron's pointing up, Yeah for who from Washington?
Speaker 2 (01:13:38):
Yes, I agree with you there all right.
Speaker 1 (01:13:40):
Coming up, we've got some other pro football news, but
my conversation with the head coach of the San Jose
State Spartans, Ken Neo Montalolo, that's up next here on
a Yacht Rock Wednesday, the greats Teelee Dan with Babylon
Sisters there before we get to the conversation with Ken
Neo Montalolo, they head coach at San Jose st one
(01:14:00):
other NFL note that I wanted to get to. And
it's been ever since the NFL went to a seventeen
game schedule coming out of the pandemic in twenty twenty one,
it has been the considered opinion of most, if not
just about everybody who follows pro football closely that this
(01:14:21):
is merely a foreshadowing of ultimately going to an eighteen
game schedule. On's I like to do in the Canadian
Football League and get it back on nice even round numbers.
You know, It's interesting because people who know me know
that I'm kind of a more is more guy.
Speaker 3 (01:14:36):
I liked.
Speaker 1 (01:14:37):
I had no problem with the NCAA basketball term were
going to sixty eight teams. I certainly have no problem
with the college football Playoff going to twelve. I'd be
fine with it going to sixteen teams as well. The
NFL is where I drew the line on that, because
it was an odd number to go to seventeen. So
if you're gonna go to seventeen, I was thinking you
might as well go to eighteen. I thought sixteen, especially
(01:14:59):
in a thirty two WHO team league, was very symmetrical.
Speaker 2 (01:15:02):
You could do it that way.
Speaker 1 (01:15:03):
Well, they got out of symmetrics by going to the
seventeen game schedule, and now most people seem to think
that an eighteen game schedule is just around the corner. However,
the interim executive director of the NFL Players Association says
maybe maybe not. This is David White, who is the
interim executive director. He told the Associated Press he had
(01:15:27):
a productive meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in New
York a couple of weeks ago. He called it a
very good start to our relationship and added that they
have agreed to an open and respectful line of communication. Now,
all of that's all nice and good. What about the
brass tax here? Well, he said, the league has the
right to bring any issue they want to the table
(01:15:49):
and presumably to propose what they're willing to give to
receive what they want in negotiation. But we'll see when
that happens. That was an interview that White had that
covered a lot of topics. He said, we haven't talked
about it yet, and it certainly is not inevitable and
should not be presented as such. Of course, expanding the
(01:16:11):
season would require both the league and the players Association
to collectively bargain that it would be renegotiating the current
NFL CBA. That collective bargaining agreement expires in March of
twenty thirty one. So this interview happened on the eve
of the season opener tomorrow night in Philadelphia with the
(01:16:35):
defending Super Bowl champion Eagles hosting the Cowboys, and David
White is traveling to different cities to meet with teams
and communicate directly with players. You know what, that's probably
a good thing because nobody knows who in the world
this dude is.
Speaker 2 (01:16:47):
You know when they and they didn't.
Speaker 1 (01:16:49):
Know the last guy except to say it wasn't going
well and they dismissed him. So now they've got a
guy with a really dynamic, memorable name, David White.
Speaker 3 (01:16:58):
Okay, all right, assisted by John Smith. Yeah, well else
he got, you know, all right?
Speaker 1 (01:17:04):
So but I do think it's a good sign that
he's gonna and what else should he be expected to do?
I would imagine he's going to go and visit with
every single team. He's going to visit with the players.
He will visit with the player reps. Obviously you'll visit
with the general managers and owners. But he's there to
represent the players, so he's traveling the different cities to meet.
(01:17:25):
This is a guy who's a former executive director for
SAG and after, so it's not like he doesn't know
about collective bargaining obviously with the Screen Actors Guild and
the American Federation of Television Radio Artists. He replaced Lloyd Howell,
another memorable name last month. Howell stepped down in July,
citing distractions his leadership had caused. You know, that's never
a good thing. If if, if your own leadership is
(01:17:49):
causing distractions, maybe you're not leading the way you think
you are, should are, or should be.
Speaker 3 (01:17:55):
I don't know. Close CC Dallas Cowby h Yeah, there
you go.
Speaker 1 (01:18:01):
Restoring confidence in leadership and rebuilding the union's image are
the top priorities for White. He's a veteran labor executive,
so he's guided some of the most prominent entertainment and
financial organizations in the world.
Speaker 2 (01:18:15):
He had an interesting quote.
Speaker 1 (01:18:16):
He said, first understand, unions have tumult from time to time,
so there's no need to panic or overreact. Unions are
the house of the members, So the NFLPA is the
house of the players, and that means every action that
we take needs to align to our mission, which is
to protect and empower the players of the National Football League,
and players need to hear that.
Speaker 3 (01:18:38):
Players need to see that in action with the way that.
Speaker 1 (01:18:40):
We conduct ourselves and through our performance, and we need
to remind ourselves of that. He said he's been impressed
by the staff he's met in the first month, calling
them creative, intelligent, and focused on players.
Speaker 4 (01:18:52):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:18:52):
Three days after Lloyd Howell stepped down as the head
of the players union, their chief strategy officer, JC Trettor
resigned as well from the position. Tredor was considered a
candidate to replace howl who was elected over White two
years ago. The NFLPA executive Committee chose White by ten
to one vote, but Howe was selected by the thirty
(01:19:14):
two player representatives, so that's probably why Tredder resigned. White
addressed numerous topics in his first interview since he was
elected in August third. He has resigned from being a
member on various boards. He's paused his work as the
CEO of three CG Ventures that's an executive coaching and
strategic consulting firm, as a precondition to assuming his new role,
(01:19:39):
and he declined to comment on the investigation of Howe's
leadership and the federal investigation into One Team Partners. That's
the licensing company founded by the NFLPA and Major League
Baseball Players Association. So anyway, that's where it is. He
says it's not a given for sure that this is
going to happen, but well that it's eighteen gage.
Speaker 2 (01:19:59):
We'll have conversations when it's time.
Speaker 1 (01:20:01):
And I do think he makes a good point when
he says that it's there is going to be, as
he says, tumult around unions. It's it's a pretty normal thing.
It doesn't mean everybody has to panic and say, oh
my goodness, there's going to be a strike. There's a CBA,
there's a collective bartying agreement that runs all the way
to twenty thirty one, So I don't think the length
(01:20:23):
of that's going to be touched. But who knows what
White and the Players Association will ask for if the
NFL really seriously wants to consider going to an eighteen
game regular season schedule. And it seems to be the
case because ever since the Owners lost that other preseason
game to were four preseason games. Right now there's three.
(01:20:44):
They're looking to get that extra home game revenue back.
Speaker 4 (01:20:48):
All right.
Speaker 1 (01:20:48):
It's a home game for the Loghorns this Saturday, their
first home game of the season, the season home opener.
They take on the San Jose State Spartans, who lost
a heartbreaker on a missfield goal Central Michigan sixteen fourteen
last Friday night. Late last Friday night in San Jose.
The head coach of the Spartans, a guy who had
(01:21:08):
so much success at the Naval Academy, Ken Neo mat Lolo,
and we had the opportunity to visit with the head
coach of the San Jose State Spartans.
Speaker 2 (01:21:17):
Coach.
Speaker 1 (01:21:18):
One thing I've always heard other coaches say is the
biggest improvement comes from game one to game two. A.
Are you a subscriber to that philosophy? And B what
are the things that you did like out of game
one as well as the things that you do endeavor
to see improvement on for game number two?
Speaker 5 (01:21:38):
Well, I definitely subscribe to that, I feel like, I mean,
you definitely do make a ton of improvement from game
one to game two. You know, obviously in college there's
no preseason like how you have an NFL. I think
number one, I mean, which has always been something the
teams that try to coach is just make sure we
take care of the ball.
Speaker 4 (01:21:56):
And we lost that three zero.
Speaker 5 (01:21:59):
Last week, and it was surprising that we were still
in the game. I mean, normally, when you lose a
turnover battle three to zero, you mean get blown out.
So I didn't like that, but I like the fact
that our kids battled. I mean, we had two sulgos
at the end to have an opportunity to win. So
our kids, you know, I love their grit, and so
(01:22:21):
we got we got to prove it, you know, for
us to.
Speaker 4 (01:22:22):
Have any kind of shot.
Speaker 5 (01:22:23):
I mean, we turned the ball over three times this week,
it's going to be one hundred and zero.
Speaker 1 (01:22:28):
Well, one thing that I did notice is that you've
had teams, not only the team last year at Santase State,
but also in your time in Navy, where you were
you had guys who got takeaways for you, and for
you to be that close without a takeaway as well
as given the three I know that that that probably
registers with you and with the coaching staff as well.
(01:22:48):
Is there a key on being able to garner turnovers
to get takeaways from that opponent.
Speaker 5 (01:22:55):
Yeah, last year we were pretty good at it. I
mean last year we were tired for the country.
Speaker 4 (01:22:59):
And going to the last game with and you know, we.
Speaker 5 (01:23:02):
Were second and interceptions, so we did a really good
job of getting them. Obviously we had too many last
last year. We had too many the first week.
Speaker 4 (01:23:10):
But you know, we're we're.
Speaker 5 (01:23:12):
Doing our best to make sure that we take care
of the ball. And like I said, we've definitely got
take care of the ball this week to have any
similars of hope. But we're always working on getting turnovers.
I mean it's something that you always work on.
Speaker 4 (01:23:25):
Everybody has it.
Speaker 5 (01:23:26):
You go to everybody's practice, run a country. Everybody has
tackling circuits and things that you try to, you know,
practice and practice and hopefully they come to fruish in
the game.
Speaker 1 (01:23:36):
I would think that everybody across the country knows about
Jordan Pollard and he's a known commodity for you and
for him to get fifteen tackles in a season of
It looks like he picked up right where you left off.
Speaker 2 (01:23:48):
How how special a player is Jordan.
Speaker 5 (01:23:51):
Well, he's he's a natural football players. I mean he's
a football player. He's got great instincts.
Speaker 4 (01:23:57):
He can run sideline sideline.
Speaker 5 (01:23:58):
He's physical, he's smart. He's been in the defense for
so long, so he knows all the intricacies. I mean,
he's well versed how the front works.
Speaker 4 (01:24:07):
You know how it ties in.
Speaker 5 (01:24:08):
The front ties into the back end, and.
Speaker 4 (01:24:10):
All linebackers have to be able to do that.
Speaker 5 (01:24:12):
You got to be able to tie in the front
seven to the back end. And he knows that seamlessly.
He knows where all the gaps are. You know who's
sitting there, you know who's got leverage on the ball,
send and edge.
Speaker 2 (01:24:22):
And I think it's because of.
Speaker 4 (01:24:23):
His knowledge of the defense.
Speaker 5 (01:24:25):
He's got some match instincts and you know his athleticism,
you know, make some of.
Speaker 1 (01:24:30):
The players who is How important is it to have
a guy a veteran like Walker You get to be
able to perform for you at the quarterback spot. Having
a guy who is comfortable in that role and who
really posted numbers for you last year.
Speaker 5 (01:24:44):
Yeah, thout Walker came on strong.
Speaker 4 (01:24:46):
Last year.
Speaker 5 (01:24:46):
He didn't start the season, you know, so I thought
he came on strong.
Speaker 4 (01:24:50):
You know, we're counting on his leadership, you know, this year.
Speaker 5 (01:24:54):
And we're hoping you didn't you know, in his standards.
He didn't have the greatest game in Game one, but
I have every faith in a kid that I trust him.
Speaker 4 (01:25:04):
We put a lot on a quarterback's plate, like.
Speaker 5 (01:25:06):
Every offense, I mean every quarterback. You know, there's a
lot on their plate. I'm sure cos Sakida puts a
lot on archer's plate. And so it's it's part of
the position. And you know, I trust the kid and
him for him to play well. I trusted him play well.
Speaker 1 (01:25:19):
I got to ask you about Danny Scuderro because here's
a guy who's a newcomer and he has nine catches
for one hundred eighty nine yards and the touchdown. For you,
did you expect that kind of production an impact from
him stepping into this first game.
Speaker 4 (01:25:33):
Well, he's a he's a tough kid. I mean, he
works hard, you know what I mean.
Speaker 5 (01:25:38):
He's a he's a local kid, you know, so we're
really excited that he's here. And uh yeah, he's I
mean he loves who the kid is as a young man,
and he's a kid that works hard all the time.
Speaker 1 (01:25:48):
Let me get your thoughts on the University of Texas.
What is it that really strikes you when you look
at the long warnings.
Speaker 2 (01:25:53):
On on your digital on your video.
Speaker 5 (01:25:56):
Well, I watched, you know, upset. I watched all the
game live last week, and I've been to the Horseshoe.
I played there, so I know how loud it is
there and what kind of environments there. But they have
the one and two teams playing in that environment, it's
a tough environment.
Speaker 4 (01:26:15):
I thought they played well.
Speaker 5 (01:26:17):
I mean I was a slugfest. I was like a
old AFC you know, playoff.
Speaker 4 (01:26:23):
Game, you know what I mean, where you know.
Speaker 5 (01:26:26):
The Steelers and the Ravens are battling to the end,
you know what I mean. And just so I mean,
those are two teams. You know you watch them. I mean,
those are two playoff teams.
Speaker 4 (01:26:36):
You know the talent.
Speaker 5 (01:26:37):
Wise there obviously got elite coaches.
Speaker 4 (01:26:40):
But you know, play here or there, you know, you know.
Speaker 5 (01:26:44):
The Longhorns could have won. And so what I saw
is what I expected to see. The talented team, this
well coached, that was a player two away from you know,
coming away with the victory at a at a tough
place to play. I mean, you're playing on the road,
and so first first game, I mean we struggled in
our first game. We were at home, and you know
we didn't play Ohio State. So yeah, everything I saw
(01:27:08):
is what I expect to see and super talented group
world coach, and yeah, it's gonna be a tough matchal
for us.
Speaker 1 (01:27:16):
One other thing I wanted to ask you is playing
a game like this against an opponent like this and
playing on the road. Obviously you want your guys to
come out of it healthy. What it is also the
benefit you see when you play an opponent like Texas
on the road. Is that something that you see can
help you when you get in a Mountain West Conference
(01:27:36):
play on down the road.
Speaker 5 (01:27:38):
Yeah, because you know, the kids get to see the standard.
Speaker 4 (01:27:42):
You know what I mean?
Speaker 5 (01:27:42):
Because every kid that plays college football wants to play
at the highest level, wants to, you know, make it
to the playoffs, wants to go to the NFL. And
then when you play at you know, a team like Texas,
then you see what it is. You see what an
elite program is, You see what Elipe plays are and
so you know, obviously you know everybody that plays teams
(01:28:04):
like that, you're you're excited to play them. Could you
recognize the teams like that or the standards and you
get to measure kind of.
Speaker 4 (01:28:10):
Where you're at from that's that point.
Speaker 5 (01:28:12):
So I mean, you're always excited, you know what I mean,
because like again, just of who they are and what
they represent, you know, on college football and the standards
that they are.
Speaker 1 (01:28:23):
So there's the head coach of the San Jose State Spartans,
ken Neo Motzololo. Up next, back to the Loghorns. Our
Cameron Parker had a conversation with one of the guys
who did perform very well for Texas even in the
long Horns defeat last Saturday in Columbus, Ohio. That's up
on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone. We're going
to hear Cameron Parker's conversation with a Longhorn coming up.
(01:28:47):
There was a piece that I was amused at reading.
Dan Wessel is one of those longtime veteran college football writers,
and like many long time veteran college football writer, Dan
Wetzel can be given over to a little bit of
hyperbole from time to time.
Speaker 3 (01:29:06):
I think so is the title of his pieces.
Speaker 1 (01:29:10):
After the Belichick and Manning hype comes a heavy dose
of reality.
Speaker 2 (01:29:14):
Now we all know that, But then he says.
Speaker 1 (01:29:16):
The twenty twenty five college football offseason was dominated by
a couple of names out of recent NFL glory, Manning
and Belichick. The combination of coach Bill Belichick and quarterbacks
Peyton and Eli Manning won ten of the eighteen Super
Bowls from two thousand and one to twenty nineteen, often
going through each other to get there. Now, Belichick seventy three,
was trying to reinvent himself as a college coach.
Speaker 2 (01:29:37):
At North Carolina.
Speaker 1 (01:29:37):
Meanwhile, Arch Manning, Eli and Payton's twenty one year old
nephew was set to take over at Texas as the
next generation of the family business quarterbacking. The height was breathless,
the expectations were considerable. Then reality hit across Labor Day weekend,
leaving the fawning medium preseason predictions to deal with incompletions, interceptions,
and an avalanche of public scorn. On Saturday, Mananning and
(01:30:00):
his long orange managed to the rick Wall of an
Ohio State defense led by Belichick protege defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.
The Buckeyes won fourteen to seven, and Manning went just
seventeen of thirty passing, often looking confused and uncertain on
the field, although still smooth and polished in television commercials
during the game. That one seemingly got mentioned every time.
Right after all he struggling game, he looked great on
(01:30:21):
TV and the commercials. Then it said Monday night, it
was Belichick's turn. His tari heels were humbled by TCU
at home forty eight to fourteen. What began as an
electric star studded even Michael Jordan was there, event ended
with empty stairs and emptier grand stands. Neither tried to
evade responsibility. Not good enough, Manning said after his loss
(01:30:42):
that starts with me. I've got to play better for us.
They outplayed us, out coached us, and they were just
better than we were. Tonight, Belichick said both been were correct.
Neither was good enough, or precisely, neither was close to
as good as the summer of attention suggested. Manning wasn't terrible,
but he certainly didn't look like the betting favorite to
win the Heisman Trophy and become the number one pick
in Expring's NFL draft. He was just another college quarterback
(01:31:02):
with a ton to learn. Belichick, meanwhile, wasn't some magician
who could just wave a wand and make Carolina into
an overnight juggernaut. Anyone who expected that was a fool.
Coaching matters, but not as much as talent. Despite bringing
in seventy new players, UNC doesn't have enough of it
yet none For example, we're named Tom Brady. Anyway, it
goes on and talked about how they've got to go
back to the drawing board.
Speaker 3 (01:31:22):
They know all of that, so be interesting to see
how it is. But he makes it.
Speaker 1 (01:31:30):
Dan Wetzel does make a good point when he talks
about the fawning media and the expectations, because I know
ars Manning didn't ask for the attention that comes with it,
but he knows it's the part of the game, part
of that it's gonna happen. And Belichick never asked for
any attention from the media fans. He just wants to
go about his business and do his thing. So no
(01:31:52):
big surprise there. One surprise perhaps that came out of
the Texas loss was the outstanding work of Jack bowby
the senior transfer from bend to Go, Australia who transferred
in from Utah and had a tremendous game with three
punch inside the twenty two inside. The Dan really did
(01:32:14):
an outstanding job in the game, and our Cameron Parker
sat down to visit with the senior transfer, a native
of Australia, Jack Bowmester.
Speaker 6 (01:32:22):
All right, let's get it straight. Tell all the folks
how to say your last name. Barmesta Bowmester. Yeah, okay,
Jack Bomester starting point for the University of Texas from Bendigo, Australia, Bendia,
Victoria to Salt Lake City and now the Austin Texas.
Is there ever a moment where you reflect and wonder
how do I find myself here?
Speaker 4 (01:32:43):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (01:32:43):
I think a lot of times.
Speaker 8 (01:32:44):
I think running out on Saturday was a pinching environment
of foricial.
Speaker 7 (01:32:49):
I couldn't help it small.
Speaker 8 (01:32:52):
It's just one of those environments in your career you
kind of go like, how did I get myself to
this point? I think the game was on at two
am back in Australia, but I had a few friends
that got up for it and watched it and they
just couldn't believe how many people were packed in to
a college game.
Speaker 7 (01:33:11):
Yeah, it's been a whirl win, but excited to be here.
Speaker 3 (01:33:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (01:33:16):
Did you have to explain to anyone back home why
there was a man in a tuxedo putting on the
Ohio Steed mascot head before the game kicked off.
Speaker 8 (01:33:25):
No one's actually asking that. I think Dad may have
said something, but I just said that he's a legend
and it was his last college game day. But I
think the guys are a bit more involved. They know
Pat McAfee, so they kind of connected the dots there,
and they know obviously Nick Saban, so they're like, it
(01:33:47):
must be a pretty big deal.
Speaker 6 (01:33:48):
So, of course, talking about Luke Corsol's final college game
day to the game itself, you played fantastic three punts
inside the twenty. You mentioned the atmosphere, the environment, the
pitch me moment, but it seemed like you pretty prepared
for it.
Speaker 2 (01:34:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:34:01):
I think just during full camp the pressure that Coach
Banks tries to emulate. Yeah, I mean it's just sometimes
in the games that can be a lot simpler for you.
Speaker 7 (01:34:17):
You kind of know exactly what you're doing.
Speaker 8 (01:34:18):
You get out there, I have my target ready and
you just go for it. Sometimes practice you can get
caught up and thinking about it too much, but in
a game, it's kind of like, right, I need to
do this for the team, and this is all I
need to do. So I find a bit of piece
sometimes in.
Speaker 3 (01:34:33):
Running out there.
Speaker 8 (01:34:34):
And obviously you can only see eye level, so I
can't see that thousands of people above.
Speaker 7 (01:34:40):
But yeah, I think game day it's time. It's good
to relax and just let it happen.
Speaker 6 (01:34:45):
So and now I'm sory to get to play at
GEKR for the first time again Saturday State. I'm sure
you've seen videos hyping it up, but I'm sure you're
probably pretty excited to be able to play an.
Speaker 7 (01:34:54):
Environment like that.
Speaker 8 (01:34:55):
Yeah, seeing a lot of videos of DKR, it's gonna
be good fun.
Speaker 7 (01:35:02):
I think we're a really good team.
Speaker 8 (01:35:05):
We've got really good leaders, and I think, yeah, it's
gonna be a great year.
Speaker 7 (01:35:11):
Just gonna stick to it. Just got to stick to it.
Speaker 6 (01:35:13):
Australian rules football or American football, American football.
Speaker 8 (01:35:17):
Really, Yeah, I try to keep up with my Australian rules.
But my team is Carlton and they didn't do so
well this year.
Speaker 7 (01:35:27):
And the games are on at like thirty am, so
it's for you. Yeah, I get up.
Speaker 8 (01:35:31):
And watch the replays, but yeah, American football definitely.
Speaker 6 (01:35:36):
Well Jack, thanks so much for doing this last thing
for you. Every time I turn on a college football
game now or even NFL, the answer is always saying
a punter from Australia. I think at this point we
can just stop saying that. It seems like every punter
is from Pro Kick Australia. Is there a secret group chat,
a secret Instagram message with all the different Australian punters
from across the country that are all playing D one
(01:35:57):
college football. I've got a there is a few group chats,
but I mean I speak to most of the guys,
and I think once you kind of know before the
game whether you know the guy or not, you're always
kind of up there talking about your experience with him.
So I hadn't met the High State pun of Joe beforehand,
but I was really close with the backup Nick McCarty.
(01:36:20):
But obviously you meet these guys and you talk like
you've known each other for ten years. So yeah, there's
a few dialogues.
Speaker 8 (01:36:27):
Going on with some other guys, and it's always good
to just bounce stuff off each other. Yeah, I mean
it's your home way from home, so yeah, that's kind
of your network, so
