Speaker 1 (00:00):
Another edition of this program, Craig Way Show.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
I happen to be the guy whose name on the
on the show, but glad to have you with us
this afternoon.

Speaker 1 (00:08):
My name is Craig Way. Thanks so much for joining us.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
US of course normally includes the producer, and it does
again today.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
Cameron D. Parker, the D on the birth certificate stands
for Dallas as in his favorite.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Pro football team that he might be warming up just
a little bit on and we'll continue to follow that.
But Cam is here, But Kim is not the only
person who is here. Antone like him, who's our resident
jack of all trades around town. What do you what
do you got Anton doing this?

Speaker 3 (00:41):
Dunallest shadowing today is he He'll be throwing in for
me a little bit here when I go on my
free football sabbatical.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Yeah, for about all weeks. Okay, all right, so that's good.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Uh So, Yeah, Anton's hanging out and Anton's normally the
man and the master, the purveyor of the copies of
Dave Campbell Texas Football Magazine, which we will give away
a couple more copies today via via the iHeartRadio app
through our talkback feature. More on that coming up also

(01:13):
in the studio with us. There's two females in the
studio with us.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
One is my dog. We name the dog Indiana.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
It's not she's it's not Indiana, it's Sophie, the twelve
year old miniature snails. The reason why Sophie's here is
because the other female who's here is my wife who's
going to be a part of the show in the
three o'clock hour. Linda will be here because we're both
going to take the music survey that's coming up in

(01:47):
the three o'clock hour, so we'll get to that. In
the four o'clock hour, Gene Watson, our resident baseball insider
from the Chicago White Sox front office, will join us.
We'll get his review you on the trade deadline and
all the deals that were and were not made yesterday

(02:07):
prior to and inclusive of the Major League Baseball trade deadline.
So we'll get the geno in the four o'clock hour
to talk about that. If you like to join in
the conversation or at least give us your opinion, your questions,
your comments, your thoughts, we're more than happy to take
those from you. We'll take a lot of stuff from you.

(02:29):
Put it that way, Well, you can condition out and
hopefully we can dig it. But the way to do
it is to reach us via the text line, and
the text line is to text the word Texas follow
by your question or comment to eight one five three zero.

(02:51):
So you text the word Texas follow by your question
or comment to eight one five to three zero. Standard
messaging and data rates apply. So we'll give you the
opportunity to reach us. And I would imagine Cam, maybe
some of these folks might want to get your opinion

(03:11):
on Michael Parson's sun trade demand that he's asking for now.

Speaker 4 (03:17):
I don't know, I don't really feel like talking about
more cowboys?

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Is he just all right? Let me ask you this.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
We don't have to dwell on it a lot, but
but I mean, there's a lot of people like yourself
in this town who are fans, long suffering fans of
the Dallas Cowboys, and so they might they might be
interested in And actually, what you have to say about
that about the Cowboys.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Well, first off, I took my cap to Michael Parsons.
You know, the Jerry Jones and the Jones family have
kind of handled these negotiations the same over the past
couple of years, you know, whether it's Ezekiel, Elliott, Dak Prescott,
Ceedee Lamb. And you know, Michael Parsons, he has sat back,
you know, and he's seen it. He's seen it firsthand,

(04:03):
how it probably affects the locker room, how it affects
the team. And I give him credit for saying, you
know what, I'm gonna, I'm gonna flip the table here.
I'm gonna demand a trade because and I fully believe
Michael Parsons probably wants to spend his career in Dallas,
and this might be a little bit of a bluff
coming from his agent, but I think it's a fantastic move.
I mean, just go ahead and just stick it to

(04:24):
the Jerry Jones family. You're not gonna You're not gonna,
you know, resign me by now. You're gonna create this
whole story. Well cool, I'm gonna I'm gonna raise it.
I'm gonna raise it, and I'm going to demand a trade.
So I fully believe he'll end up playing be playing
for the Cowboys this season. But I do respect Michael
Parson's decision.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
So apparently he did this big, detailed post, the title
of which was called thank you Dallas, like he's leaving
saying I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys.
My trade request has been submitted to Stephen Jones personally, eh.
I mean, like I said, it sounds like and that's

(05:05):
a dig at Jerry. He didn't even go to Jerry.
He went to Stephen because he knows who actually runs
the team. It's Jones. Stephen. Let me also say this,
what was it two weeks ago when the Cowboys at
open camp or a week and a half ago, whatever,
and Jerry did his state of the.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Team address, you know, fundamentally.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Hypothetically or relative to his football team that when he
did his state of the team address, it was made
very very clear, very plainly stated by Stephen Jones, Jerry's
son and of course the number two in the operation that

(05:43):
Jerry doesn't even really talk to the agents. Jered doesn't
talk to the agents. I mean, they were pretty blunt
about that. And Jerry's like, yeah, I don't really spend
much time with them. If I need to say something,
I'll do. But he leaves it to Steven. So maybe
that's as much calculated by my Caparson's team to Stephen,

(06:03):
like you're the one who deals with the agent.

Speaker 1 (06:07):
So since you can't get the deal done.

Speaker 4 (06:11):
Trade me.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Maybe it's all calculated right, And I'm I think I'm
in agreement with you. When the dust settles, when the
smoke clears. Ultimately he'll wind up playing for the Cowboys.
He has one final year of his rookie deal, so
he really doesn't have a choice. I mean, you sit

(06:33):
out if you want, but the Cowboys still hold your
rights for a year, one more year out of that
rookie deal if you don't, if you choose not to play,
and he can be fined by uh, you know the
terms of the deal, the contract, he can get fined.

Speaker 1 (06:51):
So that's why I'm in agreement with you.

Speaker 2 (06:54):
I think when push comes to shove, if nothing else,
I mean my Camparsons showed up a camp. I think
what I think what he'll do is say, you know
what I'm here, I'm gonna go ahead and play. But
you guys have no shot to re sign me if
this thing isn't done before we get the season going.

Speaker 1 (07:15):
So we'll see, we'll.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
See how it all pans out. You have some sound
for us from long horn football players?

Speaker 4 (07:23):
Correct?

Speaker 1 (07:24):
Yeah, yesterday?

Speaker 2 (07:25):
And who will we be hearing from.

Speaker 3 (07:29):
That's a fantastic question. How about DeAndre Moore, He's one
of them for sure. Yeah, okay, all right, and Ethan
Berk's in there, yep, a couple others as well.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
Good good, So we're gonna we're gonna hear from some
of that. We do have Inconceivable on a Friday. We
know what inconceivable means on a Friday, Cameron, we do Florida,
Florida Man Friday and Florida Woman Friday. Absolutely so. So
we've got that coming up with Inconceivable as well. So
we've got a lot to get to on the program.
And as I mentioned, we'll give away a copy of

(07:58):
Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. And the way that you
win the copy of the magazine is to participate via
the talkback feature on the iHeart radio app. The first
of all, what you would want to do is download
the iHeart Radio app. Really easy to do. It's free,
doesn't cause anything's really easy to do. You just download

(08:18):
the iheartradi app radio app. After you download the iHeart
Radio app, you then do a search for AM thirteen
under the zone. You know, a little magnifying glass search window.
Whatever you search AM thirteen under the zone, it'll pop
right up.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
And when it.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Pops up, what we suggest you do at that point
is go ahead and make it a preset, because if
you make it a preset, it'll be easier to wind
through and around some of the traffic to give you
a better chance to win a copy of the magazine,
or for that matter, you know something else we may
give away at some point, Antonio A. We're giving away

(08:56):
a ghost tickets one more day to day, we have
one more day of Ghosts.

Speaker 5 (09:00):
I believe this is the last week that we're going
to be giving away ghost for a while. We do
have some new stuff in the pipeline coming up the
next couple weeks that I'm I'm going to be very excited.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
To share with y'all. Oh, yes, I believe we are
doing good. We have some good keywords. That that that lampoon.

Speaker 5 (09:14):
Cameron Parker, Absolutely, that is a non negotiable of my
position here.

Speaker 1 (09:19):
I like that, all right.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
So how did you describe Ghost their their music? I
thought it was a great description. How was it that
you described it big?

Speaker 5 (09:27):
Dark, theatric metal they do, the costumes they do, the masks,
they do huge lighting productions and all that.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
It's it's it's a real.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
Theatrical metal, theatrical metal. Yes, I remember that. Okay, yeah,
theatrical metal.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Now Ghost did not make Cameron's music survey, and we
said we're going to do what we're going to do
Antone with the survey. We need to do that because
he's a musician. After all, he's a drummer for the
band Whisk. You guys gotta gig this weekend or yes.

Speaker 4 (09:57):
Sir, we are in.

Speaker 1 (10:00):
God we are in Houston tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (10:03):
Okay, you're at Axel Rat in Houston tomorrow, Axel Rat,
axel Rad, oh Rad.

Speaker 1 (10:08):
Okay, okay, all right, good, all right.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
So if you're headed over to Age down you want
to check them out, they're at axel Rad tomorrow. So
we're going to get to the point where we actually
also have Antone do the music because his music survey
is bound to be pretty interesting because he is a musician.
We had Bill Shooning last Friday, who is a so
called musician, you know, or a self styled musician.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
I guess would be the way Bill would tell you.

Speaker 2 (10:34):
Bill would tell you that his CDs he has a
million seller because he has a million copies in his cellar,
as he likes to say, but he h Lynn and
I probably I would say it's a safe bet that
neither of us have ghost in our music survey.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
Probably didn't.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
I would be shocked if you yeah, yeah, what I
asked her to fill out hers and I would fill
out mind and we would submit them to Cameron without
either of us having seen the other's survey. So that
could make it pretty interesting as well. This afternoon we'll
find out in the three o'clock hour. All right, coming up,

(11:15):
we're going to hear from some Texas long run football players,
so we'll do that if you have questions on that,
And like I said on the iHeartRadio app, just to
finish up, how you do this to have a shot
to win a copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
What you will do is you download the iHeart Radio app.

(11:40):
You search AM thirteen under the zone. When it comes up.
We suggest that you go ahead and just make it
a preset makes it easier. But then there's two buttons
on it when you pull it up. One is a
little white triangular button that's to listen to what's going
on in the air of the games, the shows all
that stuff. The other button, and this is where the
contest comes in, is a little red button with a
white microphone. That button and that activates our talk back

(12:03):
feature and you leave us a message. You can leave
us up to thirty seconds on a message. We aired
a couple of those messages. Was it yesterday where we
had the guy Kyle I guess from Pennsylvania who was
who said he had just missed out and just missed
out and then he wanted to know He asked me
how many Jersey How many Jersey numbers did Ricky Williams

(12:27):
wear when he played at Texas? And since I was
in the broadcast booth, I was the analyst back in
those days working with Bill Showing, I do know that
Ricky actually wore three different numbers at Texas. His first
two years, he wore number eleven. His junior year, he
switched to number thirty four, which he also wore a
senior year. However, during his senior season when they played

(12:51):
Oklahoma and the Cotton Bowl, Ricky had been very close
to the late Doak Walker, the great former SMU running back.
They always say that the Cotton Bowl at least the
double decking of it was the house that Dope build
because that's when he was at time when he won
the Heisman Trophy. So Ricky got close to Doak and
his family before a Doak Walker passed away, and when

(13:12):
he passed away right before the OU game, Ricky chose
to wear Doak Walker's number thirty seven on the field
that day as Texas took Oklahoma a part and Ricky
had a huge day, he wore number thirty seven. So
that was the answer to that question on that So
that was through a voice message that somebody left us

(13:33):
on that wanting to do But we'll ask a question
to give you an opportunity to win a copy of
Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. All right, up next we
year from long WRN Football Players. We'll we continue on
thirteen under the Zone. So I got to ask Cameron Parker.
First of all, Lynnon and I both love this selection
reminiscing by Little Riverband, which isn't on my survey. I

(13:55):
think it wound up on hers.

Speaker 1 (13:58):
But is that part of your fire me up Friday?

Speaker 3 (14:02):
No, No, we're just going with Friday based songs today.
So you know the opening of the song you know
whoever the lead singer is of LARB says, Hey, it's
Friday Night, you know, so we're going we're going with
that theme today.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
Graham go okay, So so it was okay, I see
Friday Night was a yeah, because you know how always
like you to play Thank God it's Friday.

Speaker 1 (14:22):
So they'll be played today.

Speaker 2 (14:23):
Yeah, I think, okay, Friday, Okay, all right, that's good
because we are getting to the weekend. And as I
always say, when we get to Friday, if Friday is
your traditional Monday through Friday, work a day, work a
week Friday, where Friday comes at the end of the week,
good on you, Good for you, and hopefully you'll enjoy
the weekend. If Friday winds up being like the middle

(14:44):
part of your week that it starts like on Wednesday,
I hope you get over the hump for that.

Speaker 1 (14:48):
And for those of you who start.

Speaker 2 (14:50):
On the weekend, I hope you're able to push through
and drive through on that. Here on this Friday on
the program, and let's start with some Texas long goring
football player sounds. Starting it off with the guy who
had the step in for the injured Kelvin Banks as
a freshman and do well last year, and he did
Trevor Gooseby. Now Gooseby projected obviously to be a starting

(15:11):
offensive lineman.

Speaker 6 (15:13):
Yeah, not a lot was specifically last year with Kevin
Thanks being at left tackle, with Value moving in that
starting role, and there's a lot of expectations.

Speaker 7 (15:22):
How you handling that ilent really well? I was prepared
last year. You know, that preparation really carried over into
this year. And uh, you know I can credit coach
Flood and Kevin Banks and you know all the guys
that have graduated Jake Majors, they all helped me with
my leadership and you know, going into the new starting role,
it it uh, you know, it kind of invites a
new leadership role. And I've kind of really taken that on.

Speaker 8 (15:40):
Really, well, what's the biggest a jessment for you? Not
having all those venoms for I.

Speaker 7 (15:46):
Think really just kind of taking like I said, leadership
and knowing like, man, I don't have Kelvin you know,
to look to anymore. You know, I got young guys
looking at me, so I got to make sure I'm
on my p's and q's.

Speaker 8 (15:54):
So you find yourself more vocal, like kind of helping
the other.

Speaker 7 (15:57):
Guys out, I think, so for sure, I think I've
taken a lot more and and it's definitely betting the starter.
You know, I watch guys like Jake, like I said
he was, he was the prime example of you know,
taking pride in what he did.

Speaker 8 (16:07):
So, so what's the best advice.

Speaker 4 (16:10):
To Jake or Kill gave you?

Speaker 7 (16:13):
Uh, I would say probably just preparing like you're the
starter because you never know, you know, one uh one
ankle and you know I was in the game, so
you know, just paring like you're a starter. I'm also
just working hard every day. You know, you might not
see the end of the tunnel like right now, but
just keep working like like it's close.

Speaker 8 (16:28):
So, you know, Bakers, Baker's a young guy. What advice
do you give him? And what do you see in
him skill set wise that.

Speaker 2 (16:36):
You really like?

Speaker 4 (16:37):
Baker's a He's a real technician.

Speaker 7 (16:39):
You know, he's really patient and he's a really smooth player.
And uh, I just continue to tell him just keep
working hard every day, you know, just keep pouring into
the little things because little things really they change you
as a player.

Speaker 4 (16:48):
So what are the biggest lessons that you learned from
the stars.

Speaker 9 (16:51):
That you have last year that you're kind of carrying.

Speaker 4 (16:53):
Over into this year and don't help.

Speaker 7 (16:55):
Uh, really just everything matters, every little thing. You know,
what time you go to bed, how much you drink water,
you know, how much you hydrate and stuff like that,
and preparation, just being prepared, especially playing the SEC and
playing you know, at the level that we play at.

Speaker 4 (17:08):
It's it's very important.

Speaker 10 (17:10):
Notice today practice Stark was very urgatic the whole time.
What sort of energy has he been bringing? What does
that do for you guys when he's kind of being
a charge?

Speaker 4 (17:18):
Oh, his energy is super infectious.

Speaker 7 (17:20):
Today we had elite energy and I feel like it
started with Sark, And you know, a team is only
as good as our head man is, and so he
really just brings in that kind of energy and that
kind of passion that we need and it really is
just infectious with the offense defense.

Speaker 4 (17:30):
So it's really been awesome.

Speaker 11 (17:32):
Do you think yourself is like arch Mannage perpsonal body Door.

Speaker 4 (17:37):
I mean, you know, I gotta protect my guy.

Speaker 7 (17:38):
You know, he's uh, you know, I would say he's
one of my one of the prime possessions of our team,
especially so you know, as an old line as a whole.
We all got to protect him. We gotta protect our
running backs and you know, and we essentially got to
protect our receivers. If we protect our quarterback quarterback and
get it to the receivers and boom explosive players.

Speaker 3 (17:55):
So you think the offensive line have different strings this year?

Speaker 7 (18:00):
Line care I think so we're just a whole new
old line. I feel like we just you know, we
have a new identity. You know, four starters are gone,
so you know we have to really really come together
and find out our.

Speaker 4 (18:09):
Identity and who we are. Is no line.

Speaker 8 (18:10):
So so Colin Sions, Ethan Burke, some of the other
edge guys who gives you personally these problems.

Speaker 4 (18:17):
H Collins are real. He's a real problem. Yeah.

Speaker 7 (18:20):
I feel like every time I go out, I'm gardening
him in basketball, and uh it's tough. He's just a
super super athletic person. Just you know, he can rust
the quarterback for sure. He's really developed a lot. You know,
he's really put a lot of moves in his bag,
and you know he's gonna be a really really good
player for us.

Speaker 4 (18:35):
So with those running backs.

Speaker 10 (18:37):
So I was talking about how CJ kind of spoke
to the offense by energy that you guys need before
the first day fractic, what do you see from him
as he recovers, and maybe what do you expect.

Speaker 4 (18:46):
From him this year in cj or.

Speaker 7 (18:48):
Yeah, he really brings a lot of energy just because
like he's just excited to be back for sure, and
like especially during last year, he was a really great teammate.
So just seeing him come back, it gives me energy
to know, like, hey, one of my brothers is back.
You know, he's back playing the game that he loves,
and it just brings me a lot more energy enjoy
seeing him on the field with me.

Speaker 10 (19:04):
So he talked about developing a new identity as a line,
like what do you want that identity to be?

Speaker 7 (19:09):
I think we're a really gritty old line. I think
we're just really gritty and grinding pound. We just have
that kind of you know, move move somebody off the ball,
kind of you know, establishment about ourselves and identity about ourselves.

Speaker 4 (19:19):
That's kind of what we pride ourselves on, for sure.

Speaker 7 (19:21):
So you do for fun this show Probably most fun
thing if I watch my brother play basketball in Kansas City.
That was a that was a real joy of mine.
Me and my older brother. We went to go watch
him and and that guy's good at basketball. That's all
I gotta say.

Speaker 8 (19:34):
We saw Sean Miller out there as a team to
be coaching your brother any time sapt.

Speaker 4 (19:38):
He might, you know, we'll see.

Speaker 7 (19:39):
I went over this to dap him up and coach
flows like, yeah, don't get any ideas, you know'taying you're
staying on the field, And I was like, man, I
can only dream, So I can only dream.

Speaker 8 (19:47):
Like there's been some last ones, there's been some talk
about the red zone issues for you guys last year
as offensive lineman. When you hear about the red zone,
truckers y'all have I mean, do y'all take that personally?

Speaker 4 (19:59):
How do you feel like?

Speaker 7 (20:00):
Oh, definitely, we definitely take it personally and just kind
of like a lot of the red zone. You know,
it was on us a lot of most of the time,
and you know, I feel like that's something that we
can really fix and if we really get it locked down,
then we're gonna be a really elite offense.

Speaker 11 (20:11):
So this is the this is the hard park for
the year. It's ability of degrees out there. What keeps
you motivated this time of year when it's.

Speaker 4 (20:19):
Just practices and I just love it. I love it.

Speaker 7 (20:21):
I love playing Oline, I love being at the University
of Texas, and it's just I wake up with breath
of my lungs every day and it's a blessing from
God every day. So you know, I get twenty four hours.
God gives me twenty four hours. What am I gonna
do with it? And I'm gonna be the best version
of myself. And I do it for my family too,
my mom, both my brothers, my pops and everybody else.
So you know, I got people that's counting on me.
So that really keeps me going.

Speaker 1 (20:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (20:42):
That well, he keeps going and going, and he's one
of the guys I think that a lot of folks
are really really looking forward to seeing as he kind
of steps in to that role full time where Calvin
Banks learned, you know, won his Outland Trophy and was
on All American. Okay, also one of the guys who
has improved a great deal and who has been very versatile.

(21:04):
He has played safety, he has played the star, he's
played the nickel. But he's zeroing in at cornerback. And
that's Jalen Gilbot.

Speaker 6 (21:12):
The transition from nickel to corner this off season, How.

Speaker 4 (21:16):
Has it been for it?

Speaker 12 (21:17):
It's been going smooth. Just getting in the rhythm of
playing corner. You know, I've been at Nickel for the
last three three three and a half years, just just
getting in the rhythm of playing corner and getting my
trace back because I played in high school, but once
I got here, I went to Nickel. So just getting
the fundamentals back and building the small details.

Speaker 6 (21:33):
Do you think the transition itself was easy because you
played nickel and a lot of receivers had two way
goes against you.

Speaker 12 (21:39):
Now, Oh yeah, honestly, I honestly say, I feel like
corner is more easy than nickel because the Nickel, you know,
they got a two way go So I feel like
corner you got a better advantage and you can use
the sideline. So I say, that's that's the advantage.

Speaker 4 (21:53):
Did the same transition.

Speaker 8 (21:54):
Did you talk to him at all about moving from
nickel to to the outside and when you see him
you don't get drafted up there?

Speaker 5 (22:02):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (22:02):
Yeah, she liked that, you know. Uh.

Speaker 12 (22:04):
I would say, I talk to him all the time.
That's that's my brother. So I talked to him. I
called him and asked him, like, what did you do
at corner like that I can do and you know
what I mean, that they can give me at that
standard that you was at. So he was basically to me, like,
go to outside and show him that you can cover,
you know what I mean?

Speaker 4 (22:18):
And that's and that's they want to see with him.

Speaker 12 (22:19):
So I'll say I'm just so I'm just doing the
same thing, just going to corner.

Speaker 4 (22:23):
And show the scouts that I can cover.

Speaker 8 (22:25):
You know, we not talking He cam about moving trade
more to the linebacker. Does that would help him at
the next level to a degree? Does moving outside help
you get the next level?

Speaker 2 (22:33):
On?

Speaker 8 (22:33):
How much conversations do you have with coaches about kind
of helping he does to help in the back.

Speaker 12 (22:38):
Uh, I talked to coach mckena and I talked to
coach Oh a boy moving outside.

Speaker 4 (22:42):
Uh.

Speaker 12 (22:42):
I want to just show, like everybody that I can cover,
you know what I mean. That was the most important thing.
I was in the box half the time a nickel,
So I just want to prove.

Speaker 4 (22:50):
Myself and show everybody that I can cover at corner too.

Speaker 10 (22:52):
You're a gun that seen this program. Bro to being
at Brunial National championship contender. How do you describe your
mentality and hunger in your last year to fit the job?

Speaker 13 (23:00):
Now?

Speaker 12 (23:01):
Uh, I would say, it's just it's it's you gotta
have a kill as instinct mindset like, uh, you you
can't come.

Speaker 4 (23:07):
Out here playing around, you know what I mean.

Speaker 12 (23:08):
You gotta treat it as a job like it's just
it's it's not for like fun. So I would say,
I treat it as a job like I love. I
love what I do, So i'm'a come out here every
day and work hard as a leader.

Speaker 10 (23:18):
How do you try to instill that in fall camp,
that that that killer instincts?

Speaker 8 (23:22):
Uh?

Speaker 12 (23:22):
I would say, just just going out thirty minutes before practice,
doing stuff before everybody get out there, you know what
I mean, And and installing in the young guys, cause
we're gonna need the young guys too. So I would
say just just having that mindset and bringing the young
guys along.

Speaker 1 (23:37):
You.

Speaker 4 (23:37):
You just gotta be the guy.

Speaker 8 (23:38):
Who's pushing you through that starting foreigner.

Speaker 12 (23:41):
By uh, I would say, everybody, it's taff Manny uh,
Kobe Warren and some of the young guys.

Speaker 4 (23:49):
They all elite. What those young.

Speaker 8 (23:52):
Guys do you think are kind of taking to the
college game and you can can really help them.

Speaker 4 (23:57):
This year, I got two young guys in mine.

Speaker 12 (24:01):
That's that's that's gotten better from from spring until now.

Speaker 4 (24:05):
M Uh what's his name? Uh? I can't think of
his name. It's crazy.

Speaker 12 (24:14):
Uh Kobe, Kobe got better as a young guy. Grayson, Yeah,
he he was he wanted them ones. I I feel like,
uh he he he gonna do his job and he
gonna get it done. Okay, and uh one more guy.
Uh I got a shout him out? Uh kay Phillips Okay, Yeah,
he he's one of the ones too.

Speaker 4 (24:32):
What's that about him?

Speaker 13 (24:33):
Uh?

Speaker 12 (24:34):
He athletic, fast, he he can do it all. He
can press, he can he can play off. Man, he
can do it everything you need.

Speaker 4 (24:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (24:40):
A couple of years ago here starting off to all
all of a hot start and get injured, you know,
talk about coming back from that, Like what was it
like during those moments and talk about battling back from
after back the injury.

Speaker 4 (24:52):
Uh, I would say, it's it's tough.

Speaker 8 (24:54):
Uh.

Speaker 12 (24:54):
Tenure ACL and mcl just knowing you going out there.

Speaker 4 (24:57):
I told my ACL.

Speaker 12 (24:58):
Uh the eighth game of Oklahoma State and I was down,
you know what I mean, and go and see my
brothers going out there and play.

Speaker 4 (25:04):
It's it's it's real tough.

Speaker 12 (25:05):
It's it bring a mental like it's real mental when
you get hurt like something like that, because I was
out for the rest of the season, and I was
out for a little bit of my sophomore season.

Speaker 4 (25:13):
So I mean, just just.

Speaker 12 (25:14):
Just having that mindset of coming back and knowing like
you gotta be back and missing my brothers like I.
That's that's one thing I say I tell everybody, Like
when I got hurt, it's just that that it's not
good feeling, you know what I mean. So I'll say,
like just staying healthy and don't get injured.

Speaker 4 (25:30):
What was ok here to figure what kind of pulls
through you know some of those tough moments. Uh. I
had a mentor, uh Kevin Carroll. Uh.

Speaker 12 (25:38):
I lean into him and uh talk to him about
uh things about my mental and just keeping me straight,
keep me straight on the straight line, because you know,
you can go down Like sark s head, you got
three phases of life football, academic and uh social life.
And once football stopped for me, it was like, man,
like I'm going downhill because I'm hurting.

Speaker 4 (25:56):
I'm injured, like you know what I mean. So it
was it was it was real tough.

Speaker 11 (26:00):
Passed uh Trevor about his motivations. What's a you have
a new source of motivation in your life a couple
of weeks ago.

Speaker 8 (26:08):
What's what's dad like?

Speaker 9 (26:09):
Like?

Speaker 1 (26:09):
S them like you?

Speaker 12 (26:10):
I love it, man, this this, this is the reason
why I'm doing it.

Speaker 4 (26:12):
I got a little daughter that's leaning on me.

Speaker 12 (26:14):
So I wake up to you every morning and I
kissed my daughter on the fore head and tell her, baby,
I got you like this, this is what daddy doing.

Speaker 4 (26:20):
I got you.

Speaker 12 (26:20):
You don't have to worry about nothing. So I feel
like being a father. It's just like a fire under
you and I I I love the fatherhood like I
wake up to her every morning, wake up to my
girlfriend every morning and just tell him I loved him.

Speaker 4 (26:31):
And I'm going to work. You wake in the morning
or the middle of it.

Speaker 12 (26:34):
I sat in the morning. I wake up in the
morning and I'll be up here on the night. Last night,
I barely got sleep last night. So it's it's tough
of having a newborn, but I love being a dad though.

Speaker 4 (26:44):
What's your Raley? Thank you go roy l e g.

Speaker 8 (26:48):
I what'll spend that biggest surprise that that you didn't
maybe know what with that.

Speaker 12 (26:52):
Baby, I would say the first like when it when
it first happened, like me, uh at the hospital when
she came up, like I couldn't even hold it. I
was like in shock. I'm like, oh my god, I
got a kid. Like it's crazy. I shed tears just
you know what I'm saying, just being like a father.

Speaker 4 (27:08):
You know what I mean, knowing I got a little girl.

Speaker 12 (27:10):
You know what I'm saying. It can change your life.
You got good hands, I got to I gotta have
I gotta have soft hands and then I gotta come
out here and have rough hands to rub somebody up that.

Speaker 4 (27:19):
Would you describe your skills set?

Speaker 7 (27:23):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (27:23):
I would say, I'm athletic. I can do it all.
It's simple. I can do it all. What's been like
learning under coach or Fay? You know the differences between
him and and coach Joseph Lieving this past season?

Speaker 8 (27:34):
How has that been?

Speaker 2 (27:35):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (27:35):
They both great coaches.

Speaker 12 (27:36):
I would say learning from uh coach Tjo, I learned
uh just more like fundamentals and UH using more IQ
in my game and coach Orphan he he more of
a like a horn a hands on coach. I would
say both of them great coaches. I love both of
'em and what they did for me.

Speaker 8 (27:51):
If you're going one on ones, who who's the toughest
guy for you personally to have? Poor receiver?

Speaker 12 (27:57):
Uh I got two receivers, okay, and it's Demo and
uh In Wingo. That's the light each one because I
sometimes I go into slot and guard Demo and then
sometimes I'm outside guarding Wingo. But you know what I'm saying,
you got a batter every day, get each another, each
each other better every.

Speaker 10 (28:12):
Day, birthless battles, like with him when he tries to.

Speaker 12 (28:15):
Block here, we're gonna fight, and we're gonna fight, you
know what I mean. That's my brother at the end
of the day. We're gonna protect each other. But it's
a job. Like I said, We're gonna fight and get
the job done.

Speaker 4 (28:26):
Well.

Speaker 2 (28:27):
That's from student athlete, football player and new dad Jalen Gilbo.
It's very nice here and talk about how well he's
embraced his fatherhood role as well. All right, coming up next,
we have Inconceivable on a Friday here on thirteen after
the zone, We're we you up until five o'clock coming up.

(28:48):
In a few minutes, we'll shift to Major League Baseball.
The trade deadline has come and gone. Deals have been made,
Cameron Parker in your estimation, I saw grades. By the way,
I don't know if you saw the MLB grades? Did
you see those?

Speaker 1 (29:04):
Did not?

Speaker 2 (29:06):
The Rangers got? I think it was a B minus.
Yeah on that for the for the deals that they made.
Do you kind of agree with that?

Speaker 4 (29:15):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (29:15):
I mean I went in knowing the Rangers needed to
bolster their their bullpen. A little bit surprised that when
after Merrill Kelly, they was on a Diamondbacks pitcher who
pitched against them in the World Series two years ago.

Speaker 4 (29:28):
I like him.

Speaker 1 (29:29):
I just worry about what they gave up.

Speaker 3 (29:31):
Three prospects, including Cole Drake, who I saw pitch for
the Express against Las Vegas. He started the season double
a Frisco, fantastic pitcher. He's going to be a great
prospect for the Dbacks organization. But give up a lot
for a guy who is in the last year of
his contract and will be an unrestricted free agent. That
always scares me, because the Rangers under John Daniels made

(29:52):
a lot of moves like that in the mid twenty tens,
going for pitchers from the last year, like Ryan Ryan Dempster.
I think there was another one, and then you know
they end up signing somewhere else the next year. And
then you just gave up three of your best prospects
in your farm system for a guy who is only
going to pitch for a couple months. So you know,
al Christian likes to operate chips all in, he loves

(30:15):
to win. He's put a lot of money into this
roster this season, one of the top payrolls in all
of baseball. But you know, if you don't make the playoffs,
doesn't matter. And you know, the pitching is one thing.
But the Rangers' bats have been a little bit cold
in Los Angeles and now Seattle, not scoring a single
run last night to the Mariners, who with a big
dumper Cal Riley. The dum runs now number one in

(30:38):
MLB over show you with Tani so need some bats,
you know, And the Rangers did not go after a bet.
I thought they would possibly add maybe a backup catcher,
but you know, time will tell. I like Phil Matone,
I love Danny Columbi's two fantastic bullpenning guys, and Meryl
Kelly is having a fantastic season.

Speaker 2 (30:56):
But hey, if you don't score any runs, Craig, it
doesn't matter. Kind of important weekend series for him. Today
is August first, so there's basically two months left in
the season, so there's time. They're five and a half
back of the Astros in the American League West. In
the wild card standings, they are one game out of
the third spot held by Seattle following the Mariners win

(31:18):
last time. It's a pretty important series in the PNW
this weekend in the Pacific Northwest. But in terms of
the grades that were handed out the Rangers, I want
to make sure I get the analysis on this correct
and looking at it. By the way, the Astro's got

(31:39):
an A minus on theirs they went in. The Mariner's
got an A. The Rangers got a solid B a B.
Adding Merrill Kelly to the rotation to sit behind Jacob
d Gron and Nathan Valdi was a great move, and
the bullpen depth added with Phil Matone and Daddy Columbia
was also great. They really needed to shore up their

(32:00):
D eight spot, though, is what they said. Off of that,
the the other other grades that came down out of
this in in the American League, the other grades that
were handed out the A's, the Athletics got to be plus.
The Orioles got an F said, this isn't a grade

(32:21):
in the here and now, but rather one over the
long haul.

Speaker 1 (32:24):
So talk about they really didn't build for the.

Speaker 2 (32:26):
Red Sox got to C minus getting Dustin May from
the Dodgers and Stephen Motts is a long reliever. White
Sox got to see. We'll see what Gene Watson thinks
when he joins us a few minutes. Guardians f The
Guardians traded two players who are currently injured and otherwise
didn't do anything traded. They were only two and a

(32:46):
half games out of a playoff spot, so why are
they trading Shane Bieber when they have a lackluster back
into the rotation AH to save money. That's right again,
two and a half games out pathetic. That was the
right up on them them. Tiger's got to be Asteroids
and a minus. The trade deadline was another reminder that
just being in the playoff race is no longer good

(33:07):
enough in Houston. As the Asteroids got back Carlos Carey
in a blockbuster move. In addition to grabbing infielder Ramon
Urius and outfielder his Usanchez. They didn't get a starting pitcher,
but they have four coming back from injury in August.
In the National League, the Padres got an A plus
A plus for There's Giants got to be basically dumping Theirs.

(33:30):
This the Cardinals did. Nationals got to c they did
one deal with the Pirates got a D Phillies B
plus Mets and a minus Brewers B minus Dodgers got
to be plus. Said certainly when the headline grabbing deadline
for the reigning chance, but given the roster depth, it
really didn't have to be Alex call it's the guy
that got from the Nationals is a strong targeted strike

(33:51):
for their troubled outfit, and they got an excellent return
from the Dustin May.

Speaker 1 (33:55):
Swap from Boston. I'm in agreeing with that.

Speaker 2 (33:57):
Dustin May just never really seemed to launch into it
and do it. We'll see what Gene Watson thinks. Coming
up next, we'll visit with the front office man in
the Chicago White Sox to talk about the baseball trap.
We have some more long worn football sound. We'll get
to as well, and we'll continue on thirteen under the zone.
So what the hell.

Speaker 4 (34:16):
Do we know?

Speaker 1 (34:16):
Let's get the opinion and the.

Speaker 2 (34:19):
Analysis from one who does straight from the Chicago White
Sox front office and a guy who ate a lot
of takeout or take in food during the trade deadline.

Speaker 1 (34:32):
Is Jean Watson, Our good friend.

Speaker 2 (34:34):
Is that how, by the way, you got the nickname
snacks was because of having to spend so much time
in war rooms working out trades.

Speaker 13 (34:46):
So the diet, the diet that I've been on the
last seven days, nobody would ever ever want to do
from sans donuts to it's just bad. It's over. So
now it's it's trying to get back on the train
a little bit.

Speaker 2 (35:05):
Okay, all right, I understand, I understand that, and uh
and I didn't And I wasn't calling you to have
you talk about your diet situation. I wanted to have
you give some analysis and let me start with your
ball club because I've read a couple of analyzes of
the teams who did make deals, including your own.

Speaker 4 (35:27):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (35:27):
But on a couple of spots I read was that
the most surprising non trade that happened that there was
no deal. It was for your own Luise Robert Jr.
And And I know you said there would be people
interested in it. And I'm curious to get your thought
on when you and the front office are examining deals,

(35:49):
because I'm sure there were the offers made where you
get to the point and you look at one another
and say, this isn't enough or this isn't good enough.
We've got to be able to accrue more to unload
a player like that. Well, there's always risks.

Speaker 13 (36:04):
Who always never doing a deal or doing a deal,
the risk always lies. But but what what most organizations
can't compute is what the player means to the organization
that he's in. And Louis means an extremely lot to us.
He's he's been up, he's been down, he's been hurt,
he's underperformed, but he's got all star caliber talent. And

(36:28):
with where our payroll was, the twenty million dollar option
for next year doesn't really matter. He means more to
us than that option. And so you know, we had
a lot of irons in the fire. We had a
lot of people that were, you know, coming at it
the deals and and some of them quite frankly, were
very good deals. But we felt like that Louie just
means more to this organization and this city right now

(36:50):
than what the return was gonna be.

Speaker 14 (36:52):
And it's a roll of the dice, and we're willing
to roll the dice.

Speaker 4 (36:55):
All right.

Speaker 2 (36:55):
So let me get your analysis before I ask you
about some other other deal that were made. I'm curious
to get your analysis of the deals that you did make,
because everybody seemed to be focusing in on and thinking
about Robert and then you wind up with Austin Slater

(37:19):
and Adrian Houser for quality returns certainly, and with the
building going up, how the rebuild going on right now?
How about your thoughts on the moves that the organization did.

Speaker 13 (37:30):
Make well in the context of them, we're very excited.
I mean, Adrian Hawser was pitching in Round Rock in
May for the Express and had an out in his contract.
Took the out, we signed him and turned him arguably
into one of the top five pitchers in Major League Baseball.
And Brian Banister and his group did a tremendous job
of recognizing some adjustments that could be made with his

(37:54):
repertoire and the way he went about it, and Austin Slater,
who is a very good hitter against tan of pitching,
was a one year guy, and so we picked up
a power on right hand and the Yankees for him,
we picked up Curtis Meet, a nice little wing in
silver with some power for Hawser.

Speaker 14 (38:10):
So anytime in context.

Speaker 13 (38:12):
You're acquiring future value for guys that are short term
players for you, it's always a win win for your organization.

Speaker 3 (38:19):
Do you know for where your organization is and other
teams where you're you're rebuilding the roster're rebuilding the farm system.
Do you already know in the winter meetings or spring
training that, hey, when the trade deadline comes, we probably
know we're going to be pretty quiet considering where we
want this team to be at in a year or
two years or three years down the road.

Speaker 2 (38:38):
By the way, Cameron just surprised me. I thought he
was going to ask about the Rangers deals. But we'll
get to those. We'll get to those.

Speaker 13 (38:44):
I think I can tell you the way I approach
my job is I assume nothing and I'm open for
everything we are we are truly, when you're when you're
a complete rebuild, you have to be open to impact
multiplications and certainly what we did with Garrett Crochet. Uh,
that's the way you can speed this thing up a

(39:05):
little quicker. As if even if with your controllable pieces,
you're willing to multiply impact.

Speaker 14 (39:10):
Now you can't miss. You got to you got to
be right on.

Speaker 13 (39:12):
Your evaluations and you you've got to be right on
the impact of the two or three players you're getting.

Speaker 4 (39:18):
If you miss, you can take a step back sometimes.

Speaker 13 (39:21):
But we we really assume nothing with the twenty nine
other organizations. We've got great relationships with them. There's constant dialogue.
And what I love about the Deadline the most is,
you know, I've been in the game thirty six years
and I've got a lot of friends in the game,
and it truly is competition. It's what makes the job
when you can't play anymore, what makes it's what makes

(39:42):
the job so great is it's competition. And these conversations
can sometimes get very heated and very but the conversations
are over and the deadline's over and they go back
to being some of your very best friends in the game.
And so that's one of the unique parts of the
Deadline and the job that's always super fun.

Speaker 2 (40:02):
Talking baseball with Gene Watson from the Chicago White Sox
front office and recapping the trade deadline. So okay, I'm
let's jump to the Rangers and Astros and let me
get your thoughts first from the Rangers with the addition
of Merrill Kelly to the rotation there, and then the
bullpen depth with Phil Matome and and and Danny columbae
Is And there were a lot of folks who thought

(40:24):
they might do something to shore up the D eight spot.
That did not happen, but they did go to try
to build up the pitching depth a little bit.

Speaker 1 (40:31):
How about your thoughts on the Rangers.

Speaker 13 (40:34):
Well, I thought they did a really nice job for
the resources that they had.

Speaker 4 (40:37):
They did a really good job.

Speaker 13 (40:38):
And the thing about Boach is he's so great with
bullpens that they just provided more depth for him.

Speaker 14 (40:45):
And truly, now the.

Speaker 13 (40:48):
October baseball is really about, you know, you're managing your
bullpens and the buckets in which they can come in
and face certain pockets of hitters.

Speaker 14 (40:56):
And that's really what they did.

Speaker 13 (40:57):
They increased the talent they're bull in the depth of
their bullpen and it's going to serve them well in
their push for October with.

Speaker 3 (41:04):
The contract like Merril Kelly's going in as an unrestricted
free agent. From from your past experience, you know when
you're in the position that that Chris Young is in,
you know obviously you're in a win now mode, especially
the amount of talent and the amount of capital they
put into this team. But how do you balance, Hey, well,
we're trading for a guy who's going to be able

(41:25):
to make an impact for us in the October, in
the postseason as we make this playoff push, but also
knowing that, hey, he may not be on this team
next season, and we're possibly giving up one, two, three
of our best players in our farm system.

Speaker 13 (41:38):
I think it comes down to this. Ray Davis is
a World championship owner. You know he wants to win
another World championship. Bruce Bochi is a Hall of Famer,
a three time world champion. He wants to win another
World championship. You you can't expect to tell your twenty
six man roster to give us your very best every day,
and then at the front office don't go out and

(42:01):
give your very best to put them in the best
position to win. I don't think that's something you can
do I think all thirty clubs are a different measure
from that aspect, but certainly as Texas Rangers coming off
a World championship two years ago, where Ray Davis is
in his life, you know, Bruce Bochie in his career,
I think you got to give it everything you got.
You got to keep pushing because next year you may

(42:23):
not be as good a team as you are now,
and you're still gonna have to make trades for prospects
to improve your team. But this might be the best
chance you have to win is this year over next year.
And so they say, certainly committed to that, and it
was great moves on their part.

Speaker 2 (42:39):
I've heard you speak of Jim Crane and the Astros
front office in similar terms, and most of the grades
I see on the Astros were glowing. And if it
can be said, Gino, and you tell me if you
agree with this or not, if it can be said
that maybe the most surprising move that wasn't made was

(43:00):
Louis Robert going from leaving the White Sox that the
most surprising move that was made was getting Carlo's Correa
back and him waiving the no trade clause. And all
that did did did did that raise an eyebrow er
too when that when that move came down.

Speaker 4 (43:15):
Couldn't believe it when I saw it.

Speaker 13 (43:17):
But it's such a tangible move for the Astros to
bring him back. And you know, there's been one guy,
and I've said it countless times, there's been one guy
that's carried the uh just the charisma and the attitude
of that organization for a long time, and it's hose
Al Tuve and now to bring Correa back and add

(43:38):
to the mystique and the history of that team and
that organization.

Speaker 4 (43:42):
I talked to Dana this week. You know, we had a.

Speaker 13 (43:44):
Couple of things going with them on the lighter side,
and I just told Dane, I'm like, you know, it's
just incredible what you guys have been able to do
over the years, losing Cole, losing Verland, or losing Bregman,
losing Tucker, and you just you're just in great position
to win again. And I've said a time or two
that Jim Crane is the modern day George Steinbrenner. The

(44:07):
expectations drive the results. He makes no mistake and he
is going to commit to winning. And they just have
something special going on in Houston. And really with two
World Championships and the run that they've been on, it's historical.
I mean, one hundred years from now, you're going to
talk about the Houston Astros. Organizations were a lot of
organizations that you know, just sustained and never really pushed

(44:30):
in and and never really did what they could do
to win a World Series.

Speaker 4 (44:33):
Nobody's ever going to remember them.

Speaker 13 (44:35):
So that that's where you can give a lot of
credit to Jim Crane and the Houston Astros.

Speaker 2 (44:39):
Well, another organization that I know you think an awful
lot of, and the front office guy that I know
you think an awful lot of is Aj Preller and
the Podres. And of all the reviews I've read, the
Padres may have gotten the highest grade across the board.
And going after Mason Miller for the bullpen and and

(45:02):
then going after Ryan O'Hearn and and Freddie Fermen and
and some of those guys, and then wind up not
trading Dylan Ceas although there was supposedly big, big, big
rumors about that, and then getting Nest Cortes from Milwaukee
as well.

Speaker 1 (45:18):
How about the Padres and what they did.

Speaker 13 (45:22):
Well, on a personal note, it was really cool because
my son sat on Mason Miller for the last week.
Oh yeah, and that and that was a really cool
thing for him to be a part of that trade.
They're all in and and I don't know if anybody
has had the opportunity to go to Petco Park, but
it is it might be the best experience in baseball
right now. And the synergy around that city and that

(45:44):
ballpark and that team has never been higher than it
is right now. And when you think back to last year,
they're they're arguably wanning away from beating the Dodgers and
probably going on to win the World Series. And so
AJ looked at his minor league system, Uh, it is
appsbsolutely depleted at this point.

Speaker 4 (46:01):
He's got probably three or four prospects.

Speaker 13 (46:04):
But he was all in not only to try to
win the World Series this year, but for next year also.
And you know, he's not afraid. He never has been.
It's a joy to deal with him on deals. We
were in deep conversations with them most of the day
and week, and I really admire the way he goes
about it. And they're all in to win a world

(46:24):
championship this season.

Speaker 2 (46:26):
Gene Watson, Director player Personnel for Chicago White Sox joined
us here on a in thirteen hundreds. And you mentioned
how close to Padres came to knocking out the Dodgers
last year. Right now, San Diego is as close to
the top of the division as they've been since June sixteenth.
This is the skimpiest lead the Dodgers have had since then.

(46:47):
How about your analysis of the Dodgers deals that picking
up Alex Call from Washington and the Dustin May swap
with Boston as well.

Speaker 1 (46:56):
I've got your thoughts on those deals with LA.

Speaker 13 (47:00):
It still just comes down to two things. One, they
they know how good they are. You're kind of just
pacing yourself to get in and be healthy. And you know,
there's really no panic within the organization. Andrew Friedman does
just a tremendous job with the culture of the organization
and building that twenty six man roster out and Dave

(47:21):
Roberts obviously leading the ship, and they're they're not going
to panic. But health is going to be a major
concern and they've got to try to get as healthy
as they can.

Speaker 14 (47:31):
Uh.

Speaker 13 (47:31):
They did a lot in building out some depth for
their bench and uh, but but health is going to
be the thing that that determines, you know.

Speaker 1 (47:40):
How far they go on October, No doubt about that,
all right.

Speaker 11 (47:43):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (47:43):
The uh, the one other thing I was going to
ask you about is and this was a guy I
was hoping as a Dodger fan they would pick up.
They didn't. The Yankees did getting Bednar from the Pirates.
How big is that for New York?

Speaker 4 (47:56):
Huge?

Speaker 13 (47:56):
And you know he hasn't thrown the ball great lately.
But I can promise you when any organization goes after
a guy like that, they they know the adjustments that
need to be made. It could be something simple as tipping,
It could be something you know as pitch usage. But
the New York Yankees aren't going after Bednar without knowing

(48:17):
that that they can get him right. But arguably, you know,
one of the best bullpen leverage arms in baseball. Hitters
just do not see his fastball. It is an invisible
to the plate. And so you know that was huge
for them to be able to pick that depth up.
And you know there's certainly going to be a force
director with moving in October.

Speaker 2 (48:36):
Did it surprise you in any way, shape or form
to see teams like the Cardinals, the Giants, the Guardians
pretty much say we don't think we're going to get
there this year, and they went ahead and made a
lot of moves that could be viewed in the prism
of being sellers rather than byers.

Speaker 13 (48:56):
Well, in the Cardinals case, people better watch out because
they're coming. They've got a very good, young major league team.
They've got some very good young arms that are on
the cusp of being at the major league level, and
they've got one of the strongest systems in baseball. And
so the Cardinals are kind of laying in the weeds,
and I would tell you in twenty twenty six, they

(49:17):
got a chance to be one of the surprise teams
in baseball.

Speaker 4 (49:20):
The Giants.

Speaker 13 (49:20):
You know, I'm very close with Zach Manassian junior. We
spoke oftentimes this week, and he had just been through
so much and it was really hard for them not
to try to push the gas because Muster Posey is
one of the most competitive.

Speaker 4 (49:33):
Guys in the world.

Speaker 13 (49:34):
But kudos to them for recognizing, you know what, we've
got some capital on our twenty six man roster that's
going to allow us to.

Speaker 14 (49:42):
Be a better team in twenty twenty six and.

Speaker 13 (49:44):
Beyond than the run that we might make this year,
and so we get in, do we have the team
to beat the Dodgers in the National League or the
Padres or you get past them, you know, winning a
world championship, And they certainly know what the blueprint for
winning a world championship is.

Speaker 4 (50:00):
But but it was just a reset.

Speaker 13 (50:01):
And they they got a wonderful right handed star, Blake
Tidwell from the Mets, and they're going to be very
very good in twenty six and moving forward.

Speaker 2 (50:09):
Yeah, and and then, by the way, I guess with
the Giants getting four prospects for Camillo Dovall, so they've
got it to the Yankees wind up wind up getting
uh getting Dovall as well as what they did for Bednard.
And then and and how about uh Mike Strensky to
euro Ball Club the Royals.

Speaker 13 (50:29):
Yeah, Mike, Mike's he's gonna fit in nicely there, just uh,
one of the best makeup guys in the game and
just gonna add to their depth and give them some
some help with an outfield that's really been struggling offensively
all year long. And if they can get him uh
going in the American League and get m J. Melndez
going and they got a chance to make a little
push here in the second half. But but uh, you know,

(50:51):
the Giants did a tremendous job of of rebamping their
mind m system, knowing where they are for the twenty
twenty five season to make those moves.

Speaker 2 (50:59):
Hey, and so Dodger I can root for Mike kis Strimsky.
Now that's a good thing. I like that, all right, So, hey, Gino,
I appreciate the time as always. Hey, by the way,
tell everybody where you are today.

Speaker 13 (51:10):
National Baseball Card Show in Chicago. It was overwhelming, a
wonderful event. I pulled a five hundred dollars Joe Morgan
card in nineteen eighty one. I was super excited about that.
I pulled a two hundred and fifty dollars Pete Rose card.
So it was a pretty fun day. And I've been
out of the card world for a while, but my
grandsons have gotten me back into it and it was

(51:31):
a wonderful day. A bit overwhelming, but I'm glad I went.

Speaker 4 (51:34):
So.

Speaker 2 (51:35):
So Melanie's good with that kind of investment you're making
there or.

Speaker 1 (51:39):
Does she not know? Did you not tell her?

Speaker 13 (51:41):
We have a don't ask, don't tell policy when it
comes to to a baseball card.

Speaker 2 (51:47):
Hey, Gino, I appreciate the time. Thanks, and we'll do
it again next week.

Speaker 14 (51:51):
Right now, we'll.

Speaker 2 (51:54):
Talk next week. Appreciate the time, all right. All right,
that's Geene Watson. Listen. You know what tell you that
the just like my house, the brains of the operation
is the missive, you know.

Speaker 1 (52:06):
So it's it's melody in that case there. All right,
we have more come up.

Speaker 2 (52:09):
We're gonna hear some more long worn sound and we're
gonna give away some copies of Dave Campbells Texas Football
Magazine when we come back on thirteen Under the Zone.
Let's hear from another long worn player. How about it's
a veteran wide receiver DeAndre Moore, first.

Speaker 4 (52:23):
Person out to practice.

Speaker 1 (52:24):
That's whenever we're around at least. Is there a reason
behind that?

Speaker 12 (52:29):
Yeah, I saw those other guys do it before me, so,
you know, me being the younger guy, just soaking up
everything that I could back then, I'm just getting out
the practice, getting out there early, getting my feet under me,
just getting all my pre practice rituals in. Whatever I
need to do to make sure that I'm playing at
my best, I'm gonna do it So that's kind of
the whole little gist, you know, behind getting out there early.

Speaker 8 (52:46):
Have you had to make an effort to be more
vocal with all the new guys or.

Speaker 4 (52:51):
It kind of came naturally.

Speaker 12 (52:52):
I had really great dudes in front of me, like
I keep saying, with was more of a vocal leader.
I had X and AD who were more of you know,
I had to be a visual learner with those guys.

Speaker 4 (53:01):
I have to watch them more than anything.

Speaker 12 (53:03):
So I think that, you know that that outspoken leadership
just comes with, you know, being a leader.

Speaker 1 (53:09):
You're gonna think you're the oldest guy.

Speaker 4 (53:10):
In that world, but one of them walk on older
than me. But yeah, I'm up better, Yeah I'm up there.

Speaker 9 (53:16):
What's it like being the older guy? But I'm always
with kind of the younger guy over here.

Speaker 12 (53:21):
Okay, So sometimes it's cool, But other times I catch
myself talking too much because like I want to give
them so much that I know from you know, guys
that I've seen in past years, and I'm just.

Speaker 4 (53:31):
Like, here, bro, this is what you need to do.
You do that right, You do that right.

Speaker 12 (53:34):
So sometimes I kind of just got to take a
you know, a little chill peel. But you know, just
being able to get back to those guys and you know,
being a resource for them to you know, get better
and you know, to pursue you know, their career what
they want to do.

Speaker 4 (53:43):
It's really great. But the difference is you noticed between
Quinn vers and march Bannon as fuck.

Speaker 12 (53:51):
One had baby wheels and one has super wheels.

Speaker 1 (53:56):
Oh you know.

Speaker 11 (54:00):
Now about the balls coming out differently to get you know,
don't you describe Artis.

Speaker 12 (54:04):
Yell arch sure Archers Football's come with a little bit
more of a zip. Quinn's were a little bit more
of a a pillow, a little bit of a cushion.
He'll kind of loft it and they're archer is zipping
that thing and they're getting getting it to you.

Speaker 10 (54:18):
So feels like when a new quarterback is stepping in
a lot of them might be unsure about themselves archea.

Speaker 4 (54:23):
So just like comfortable and hungry.

Speaker 10 (54:25):
What does that presence do for the offense when a
guy's kinds sure of.

Speaker 12 (54:28):
Himself there, It gives the rest of our team assurance
as well. He's our leader and he's gonna be the
guy to you know, take the helmet and lead us
into these games and these battles. So just seeing a
guy like that who's not really sweating and sure of himself,
it's only gives me confidence to go out there and
do what I need to do.

Speaker 8 (54:43):
You know, to two of the guys who were freshmen
last year, Window and Parker, how have you seen their development.

Speaker 1 (54:48):
Over the past year.

Speaker 4 (54:49):
Oh, they're getting older.

Speaker 12 (54:51):
And it's not it's not about you know, just football,
it's about life. They're becoming real men and they're they're
learning things, and they're being k to where they can
go out and in the real world and you know, survive.

Speaker 4 (55:03):
So the football it's gonna take care of itself.

Speaker 12 (55:05):
I'm I'm more focused on what we're doing after this,
how we been in ourselves after this.

Speaker 1 (55:09):
So do you have any personal goals for the season.

Speaker 4 (55:12):
Personal?

Speaker 12 (55:13):
Yeah, first and foremost, I want to win a Nattie.
I think we've got to the doorstep two years in
a row, too too many for my liking. So I
want to win the national Championship. We got, you know
short at the SEC Championship. I want to win the
SEC Championship. As far as personal, I want the text
a touchdown record. I want at least twelve hundred yards

(55:33):
and I want to win the blendakarf.

Speaker 4 (55:35):
Okay, now I have.

Speaker 8 (55:37):
Been to the new guy and you wore how do
y'all help him be comfortable you know on the field
and then you know off the field.

Speaker 12 (55:43):
Yeah, Emma has done a great job of really buying
into the culture, so it was kind of easy for
him to come in here mesh well with you know
what we're doing. If he ever has a question, you know,
we're more than happy to here you go about this
is what you got, this your split is your alignment.
So really just maintaining that brotherhood of you know, welcome
in in whoever's coming in, and just really embracing them
into the culture.

Speaker 10 (56:04):
For the part of practice we were at, starts fired
up energetic. He was bringing it today, Like what does
that do for the team and what did you see
from him when he's kind of just leading the charge ship.

Speaker 12 (56:14):
The good teams take on the personality of their head coach.
So when starts all fired up, we have no choice
but to be fired up.

Speaker 4 (56:21):
You know.

Speaker 12 (56:21):
Last year he used to have this little juice meter.
He'd come out to practice, like how much juice you got?

Speaker 10 (56:25):
Man?

Speaker 4 (56:26):
Are you a you know a zero or you a six.
You know what I'm saying.

Speaker 12 (56:28):
So, you know, just him coming out there with that
higher energy, is you know, really great for the team.

Speaker 4 (56:33):
Do you think they're the best for Shiver football? I
do what do you feel it? I'm dynamic.

Speaker 12 (56:38):
You can put me in the slot, you can put
me outside, you can put me in a backfield, you
put me in a quarterback.

Speaker 4 (56:42):
If you need me too, I'm gonna do it. Do
you want one of those?

Speaker 11 (56:45):
Why was super pass plays?

Speaker 12 (56:47):
As far as throwing the ball? Oh see, start just
saying something in the meeting the other day. I tell
him I could throw a little bit, but you know,
I don't think he'll put me there.

Speaker 4 (56:55):
But we'll see. You were ever a quarterback?

Speaker 13 (56:58):
Oh?

Speaker 4 (56:58):
I played quarterback? Man, I tell you I did it all.

Speaker 12 (57:00):
I was DM, linebacker, running back, horn or safety, receiver,
everything I did it.

Speaker 4 (57:05):
So do you think we're.

Speaker 8 (57:06):
Gonna see us differently compared to last year, like expanding
your role at all or you focusing on what you
din last year?

Speaker 12 (57:13):
I think last year was a really great foundation and
I'm looking forward to building on of that this year.
I know the coaches have a really great game plan
and I know that you know, I'm just gonna trust
in them, and you know, whatever comes out of this
year will come.

Speaker 6 (57:25):
Who are so who are some of the dvs that
y'all gone up that you've gone up against, that you've said, Hey,
this guy's got a little something.

Speaker 4 (57:31):
To it in the sec?

Speaker 1 (57:32):
Oh no against on pr in practice?

Speaker 12 (57:34):
Oh uh okay, So the obvious Manny Muhammad, Jalen Gilbo Freshye,
I like uh Grayson Littleton, he's in the slot. So
me and him have some got some chance to you know,
work a little bit. Kay Phillips is coming along a
lot of those young guys are really buying into you know,
their position, you know, and getting better.

Speaker 4 (57:53):
So who's got to come on?

Speaker 8 (57:55):
Jalen said, he you and and him go at it
sometimes of practice. Yeah, what have you seen from here
on a special him moving.

Speaker 4 (58:00):
To the outside intent.

Speaker 12 (58:03):
I can say Jalen's intent has changed since won his baby.
But you know, this last year, I think we're all
kind of tired around this building of you know, getting
to that you know last door and just barely knocking
on it.

Speaker 4 (58:14):
So and everybody kind of has to step.

Speaker 8 (58:16):
Up where you ranking team speed of course, the fastest chats.

Speaker 12 (58:20):
Room, the Ross shoot Summer up there. I know I'm
not the first. I think Ryan Nibblett he's pretty fast. Yeah,
but I give myself top three.

Speaker 4 (58:30):
I'm Summer right now. Top three Yeah, the one. I
think you have to ask Coach Banks that.

Speaker 12 (58:36):
But I think so which one of the first one
receivers stood out to you so far?

Speaker 4 (58:40):
All of them?

Speaker 5 (58:42):
What do you like?

Speaker 4 (58:43):
All of them? Talk about all of them?

Speaker 12 (58:46):
Dead as smart Dayla McCutcheon. He's kind of in the slot.
So I see a lot of with a lot of
me and Dad Ay. So Daday's really kind of just
soaking it up and taking it and running with it.
Jamie Frinz got that Florida swagger, he got that you
know the line, he got all that good. So Jamie's
definitely coming along. Colleague long strider, long striterer, so he's
really getting up on your toes really quick. Kale's doing

(59:06):
a really great job. And Mike Terry, big boy. I
didn't know Mike Mike could go like that. So when
he coming out here to and fall came, I'm like, okay,
all right, big boy got some stuff to him. So
they're all coming along in their own time, and then
they own right, So I'm just proud of him.

Speaker 2 (59:19):
How are you feeling about all right? So there it
is the from DeAndre Moore. You know what I like
about DeAndre Moore? Obviously he does not lack for confidence's
never been. That's never been, and he carries that to
the field with him in terms of his intensity. And
he's also even though he has those personal goals, he
mentioned the team goals first of winning, you know, wanting

(59:39):
to win a national championship, wanting to win an SEC championship.
And he also could rattle off the names on both
offense and defensive guys who are looking really good right now.
That's a teammate. It's a guy who's seeing what else
is going on around him. We'll be back to wrap
up today's edition of the show here on thirteen under
the Zone.
