Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good Tuesday afternoon to you. Hope it's going well for you.
I know we talk about it often, probably more on
in this program than a lot of other ones, that
Tuesday may be the worst commuting day of the week
and the biggest of the grind days of the week.
But be that as it may, we're here to try
to guide you through to get toward the hump and
toward the end of another work week. Good afternoon, Welcome
(00:22):
to the program here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
The Zone.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
My name is Craig Way. Glad to have you with
us here this afternoon.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
We're with you up until five o'clock each and every
weekday afternoon, Monday through Friday. The producer is Jay Carmon,
who is here as well as you get to watch
any football.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Last night saw the tail end, Yeah, saw the fourth quarter,
pretty exciting game, and we watched the Manning cast.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
I almost tweeted this out last night. I really should have.
I should have tweeted out two things. One that Bluebells
Classic Pecan Pie ice cream is dangerous inconceivable, it should
belong it. It's that good good one. Two that as
much as I enjoyed the Manning cast. I think my
wife enjoys it more. I think Linda likes him more.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
She's the number one fan of the Manning cast. It
might be who was on last night?
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Who they start with?
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Uh, Jeff Daniels, the actor as in Dumb and Dumber.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
You know, Jef Daniels. He's a huge Lions fan. It
was pretty good.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Then uh oh uh. They had Indiana Jones. Daniel Jones
no longer Danny Dimes, he's now Indiana Jones since he's
the quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts. So they have a
lot of old pictures of him and Eli. It was
funny stuff. And then maybe the best of the whole night,
(01:44):
Michael Phelps, big Baltimore Ravens fan from that area and
knows football really really well.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
So it was good.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
It was it was. It was pretty entertaining stuff. And
of course Peyton Eli or Peyton and Eli, so there.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:57):
There was one point where Jef Daniels was talking about
how Lions fans he went to suffer through so many years,
and he said, I think we invented the bags on
our heads for that, which I don't think that's true.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
I think that originated in New Orleans.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
But but Peyton comes back and says, well, if you
invented it, then it then it. Then it really stepped
up a notch in New Orleans. He said, when my
dad was playing for the Saints, and he said, my
brother Cooper was one of the guys wearing the bag
of his heads in the States. Yeah, imagine that Cooper.
Of course, Arch's dad. So anyway, it was good that
that Bart was pretty funny last night. All Right, we've
(02:35):
got a lot of things to get to on the
program today. Coming up in a few minutes. Again, if
only to prove that he still is gainfully employed. Here,
Cameron Parker will pop in, But mainly I wanted to
come in and do a little Ryder Cup preview. Now, know, like,
for example, we heard from Seapow yesterday, go, I don't
know from what's a Ryder Cup.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
I don't know that.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
Open your mind because to those who know, he's gonna
tell you a little bit about it and why it
can be as much fun to keep track of, say,
if you're watching the Olympics, or if you're watching World Cup,
or if you're watching other international competition that involves the
United States.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
It's the most fun I've had watching golf.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
Yeah, I think I know why, and we'll talk more
about this, but I think I know why a lot
of people don't plug into it. But I'll get to
that a little bit later. But camp will be in
here and we'll talk a little bit about that. Speaking
of Campbe, we'll hear from the head coach of his
favorite team that he has a self self loathing for
that they love hate relationship. He has four of the
(03:37):
Dallas Cowboys. We'll also hear from Demico Ryans, the Texans
head coach. This after each of their head coach has
held their weekly news conferences, So we'll hear some things
about that. We do have inconceivable this hour, so we'll
get to that in the three o'clock hour, as we
do weekly. Greg Chepper, the editor in chief of Dave
Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, will join us. We'll talk college
(03:59):
football alland high school football in the lone Star state.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
You know, they do that FBS.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
Power Poll for the thirteen FBS schools in the state
of Texas and at the preseason, and I think even
after the first game of the season the lost to
Ohio State, Texas was still number one. We saw that
they dropped out of the one spot after the second
week with Texas A and M's winn A Notre Dame.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
They've dropped out of the two spot now.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
So we'll get him to talk about that and also
high school football as well, because there's some big games.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
In high school football. I'm pretty excited. I've got one
of those.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
Number one in the stadium's number six in the state
in Fekie for a Division one defending state champion Salina
with their dynamic quarterback Bo Bentley, who has committed to Oklahoma,
taking on Panther Creek High.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Frisco.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
There are twelve high schools in Frisco now twelve five
A schools, and I asked their head coach, Clint serrat
I said, factor fish fiction. If you stand on the
roof of a house pretty much anywhere in the city
of Frisco, if you stand on the roof and just
(05:17):
do a three sixty panoramic view around there, you'll see
at least four or five high schools. He goes, that's
absolutely true, he said. Our Eye School is about one
mile a mile and a half from Frisco. Loan starts
about a mile from Frisco, memorial.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
He said.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
In fact, I can look out of the road and
across three eighty I can see the New School and
the prosper I D. So all of that stuff is
just exploding up there. But anyway, that's one of the
big games. You step away from the bass drop mic
this week.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Correct, No, I've got a doubleheader. I've got a bass
drop Thursday night. Oh it's Thursday. They're playing okay at
House Park against McCallum. Okay, rematch of a memorable one
score game a year ago. And then on Friday night,
I've got the thrill in the Weis Hendrickson.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Okay, great, that's great. So you've been pretty busy preparing
for two games. Absolutely, welcome to my world. Yes, that's
a good thing.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
It's good world.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
I've never I've never complained about that.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
When I have two or three or state championship week
like eight to prepare for, you know, you just do it.
You just you dive into it. You research all the material,
you do the conference calls. I had two zooms this
morning with Bill la the head coach at Salona, and
Clint S. A.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Ratt, the head coach at fris Coe Panther.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Creek so you just you dive into it and soak
up all you can from the coaches and do your
research and prepare, and then you call the game.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Excitement just starts building and building the more you get,
getting the weeds.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
So so anyway, we've got all of that, and uh,
and I suppose we should start today with the news
that's come out of still Water, Oklahoma. Oklahoma State has
fired head coach Mike Gundy.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
There had been put it this way, you think about this.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
It hasn't even been two calendar years since Texas played
Oklahoma State in the Big Twelve championship game, the Long
Orange's final year in the Big Twelve. And it wasn't close.
The Long Orange dominated from the start. They went forty
nine to twenty one. They blew them out. You weren't
that thing anywhere? You already out of ten.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
I was watching on TV, and I it was the
emptying of sarks Bag that I was fully expecting in
a game in which Texas thought that it wasn't just
winning that mattered, it was how they won, right to
impress the committee.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
That was one of the more satisfying games for me
to call. It really was their last game ever. As
a member of the Big Twelve Conference, and it was
great and it was really cool to be bookending Texas
time in the Big Twelve. Was the analyst on the
broadcast workan with Bill showing the first Big Twelve championship
(07:54):
back in nineteen ninety six when Texas upset Nebraska. The
role left James Brown fourth and inches play. That was
that was really cool, and then this one was really good.
So that was that was less than two calendar years ago.
What's happened since? Oklahoma then turned around and went three
and nine last year, didn't win a conference game, got
(08:18):
absolutely blown out of the water the last game of
the year by Colorado. So they went three and nine,
and so there was some unrest going into this season.
So they started off with a win over Tennessee Martin
but struggled in getting that win.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
They pulled away in the fourth quarter to win that.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Then they went to Oregon amidst some rumbling and grumbling
and controversy, you might say, because Mike Gundy had never
been wanted to shy away from saying something that might
offend somebody, and he talked about how Oregon pretty much
their nil budget and how they're pretty much buying their
(08:57):
team and all that other cod stuff and the Oregon
players that they personally. So they went out and they
beat over Oklahoma State sixty nine to three. And by
the way, those two teams plans to water again next year,
but it won't be with my Gundy because then he Gundhy,
who was in his twenty first season as the head
coach of the Cowboys, has an exit, coming four days
(09:21):
after they felled one and two in a nineteen to
twelve loss to Tulsa. It was the first time that
Oklahoma State had lost to Tulsa at home since nineteen
fifty one. And then, you know, less than twenty four
(09:42):
hours after he yesterday, coach Practice publicly stated he had
a one hundred percent intention to remain with a program
beyond the twenty twenty five season. He said, I'm under
contract here for I think three and a half years
when I was hired here to take the job. Ever
since that day, up my heart and soul him to this,
and I will continue to do that until at some
(10:03):
point if I say I don't want to do it,
or somebody else says we don't want you to do it. Well,
somebody else said they don't want him to do it.
He's owed fifteen million to walk out there.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
Yeah, we said that yesterday, and that was sort of
where we left it, of, well, they're not going to
pay that. It'll be sort of a graceful maybe suggest
retirement at the end of the season.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
Here's what gave me second thoughts about that, because I
said that at first he was due to make six
point seventy five million this year, and that was taking
a one million dollar pay cut after going three to
nine last year. And I said, they're not going to
want to write him a check for fifteen million dollars
to walk away. And then I noticed that even if
he stayed one more year, it's still a ten million
(10:46):
dollar exit fee. So if they're going to pay him
ten million for a year and a half down the road,
why not you try to get a jump on it
and scratch the check for fifteen million and have him go. Now,
So that's what's going to happen now. It's affected if
he says he was saying yesterday, if I don't coach here,
I'll coach somewhere else. Somebody will probably hire him. And
(11:09):
if he is hired somewhere else, then then it's pro
rated the amount that they owe him as opposing. You know,
they won't write him one check for fifteen million. It's
paid out of her time, kind of like what the
Aggies have been and we'll be doing for some time
with Jim but Fisher, so it'll be that kind of thing.
So it's the athletic director Chad Weiberg said in the statement,
(11:35):
Cowboy football reached an unprecedented level of success in national
prominence under Coach Gundy's leadership.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
That's true.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
I believe I speak for Issue fans everywhere when I
say we're all grateful. We are grateful for all he
did to raise the standard and show us all what
is possible for Oklahoma State football. The university president Jim
Hess said, this is a decision about what's best for
a football program, our student athletes in Oklahoma State University,
and it reflects unwavering commitment of championship level football and
(12:02):
competing for national success. Coach Gundy dedicated decades of his
life to OSU, achieving significant success and positively impacting hundreds
of young men who wore the O issue uniform. His
contributions to our university, both as a player and the
coach deserve our profound respect and will not be forgotten.
We're grateful for his service, in which wish him and
his family the very best. Doug Meacham, the offensive coordinator,
(12:24):
is the interim head coach. So there it is coaching
change made there all right. Up next, we'll talk to
Ryder cup Gob. We've got other football to get to NFL.
We'll hear from Brian Schottenheimer and from Demico Ryans, baseball,
penn and race update stuff. We'll get to all that
and more right here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under
the Zone in the irradio app. He said, the Texans
(12:45):
Tuesday Year from Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone, including
in them return cuts in the four o'clock hour, the
King George Strait, the three o'clock hour, the iconic Willie Nelson,
and the two o'clock hour the immortal Stevie Ray Vaughan.
And that was all put together by the former producer
(13:05):
of this program who's joined us here in the studio.
That would be Cameron Parker. How'd you come up with
those three, by the way, that you wanted to do
that for Texan and two.
Speaker 5 (13:14):
Oh, I think they're probably the three most iconic artists
from Texas, right, I think Willie's Willie and the King
George Tray, of course, and then I think Stevie Ray
is very underrated.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
So England Dan and john Ford Coley probably don't know
quite hit the mark with that.
Speaker 5 (13:30):
Not not for me at least, not for me at least.
I mean now, Stevie Ray is the Texas football intro
song out of the second half, and when they come out.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
Of the locker room. I believe Willy has one. I
don't know.
Speaker 5 (13:45):
I don't know if George stra has a song that's
played during the actual broadcast, because they open up with
with Hell's Bells from ac DC. But I think those
those are the three of the most iconic artists. Of
course it's up for debate to some people. But yeah, yeah, okay.
By the way, our text line is open.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
Folks want to text in the program, and while you
have a chance in the same way to take a
shot at Cameron, you well more than welcome to do it.
You text the word text is followed by your question
or comment to eight one three zero. Standard messaging and
data rates may apply. Two high school related questions. Somebody
asked me, what's happening on the west side of House
Park expansion a new press box. Yes, yes, yes, all
(14:26):
that's happening. So JCB calling the game from out in
the stands. That's exciting to me. Now, yeah, well, in
an a venue like that, it's really cool. They are
building a new press box on the west side and
it's gonna have an elevator too.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
Roger Wallace told me that when they when they did
the what's the new name of the Taco shack Bull?
What are they calling it?
Speaker 4 (14:47):
Show?
Speaker 2 (14:48):
That's it when he was over there for that.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
So anyway, was that somebody's a battle the VS and
Cedar Park should be good. Yeah, I think that game
is over at Vandergriff though, I think it's over at
Monroe between unbeaten Vista Ridge and once beaten Uh, Vandergriff.
I think I think I'm checking it right now, pulling
out the old schedule book, and the answer is it's no,
(15:17):
I'm wrong.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
It's at Gupton. It's a Vista Ridge home game.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
Yep, yep at Gupton. So there you go, and it
may well be we'll see how that goes. And then
the question that Cameron can go get to Chuck and
Houston says, Jerry, go get Gardner.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
I know he won't though, right, the guy who just
got cut by the Houston Texans. Yeah, you're talking about
Sauce Gardner, can you c J. Gardner Johnson?
Speaker 5 (15:43):
Yeah, yeah, that's what you're coming about, because of who
signed with Houston and was just released after three weeks.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Yeah. Yeah, sure.
Speaker 3 (15:49):
Jerry asked about Sauce Gardner when he was shopping Michael
Parsons around.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
I'm not sure Jerry knows who Sauce Gardner is. Yeah,
he knows what Salce is though.
Speaker 1 (15:57):
All right, by the and then someone else said, Gundhy
won't mind the fifteen million to go away? How has
Oklahoma State lost eleven straight FBS games? Crazy stat it is,
It is no doubt about all right. So I wanted
Cameron to come into here because he's our resident golf aficionado.
(16:17):
Plays it, follows it, studies it, loves it. And you know,
we had we had our man Seapow yesterday. It said,
he goes, what's a you know, what's a what's a
Ryder cup? I don't know what that is, he said.
I follow he goes long worn golf. I'm into, but
not this other thing, and I said, hey, long worn
golfers at the top of the list, at the top
(16:38):
of it. But tell everybody exactly what comprises the Ryder
Cup and what makes it special, starting with the fact
that it happens only every other year.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
Every other year, Team USA first, Team Europe so and.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
That's all of Europe, Great Britain, France, Germany, Sweden and
all of whom.
Speaker 5 (17:00):
Have produced out spending golfers every other year. And in
golf there is not that many team events. You have
the Ryder Cup, you have the President's Cup, There's a
couple others. One other PGA Tour event they play in
No Lean's every year. There's a their team event over
on the DP World Tour, but very few and far
(17:21):
in between do we get events like this. And if
you know the history of the Ryder Cup, it gets heated.
And at first it was dominated by the Americans, and
then Seve and Tony Jacqueline really turned the tide in
the eighties and nineties to where over the past couple
(17:41):
decades the Europeans have done a fantastic job. They've won
more times on the American soil than the Americans have
won on the European Soul. In fact, with Europe has
won seventh straight on their home sold. Maybe that might
be actually a little bit longer, but.
Speaker 1 (18:00):
They've won eight of the past eleven events regardless of
where it's played, including the last time outside Rome two years.
Speaker 2 (18:09):
But I was going to ask you fact or fiction.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
When it comes to home court advantage, home field advantage, football, baseball, basketball,
the Ryder Cup, it seems to matter more than any
other sport.
Speaker 5 (18:22):
It does, and at first, if you're just a casual observer,
you might not understand why. But think about it, right,
how often do golfers get booed?
Speaker 2 (18:33):
Very rarely? But at the Ryder Cup they do. And
you're playing in New York.
Speaker 5 (18:37):
This is going to be such a pro American crowd
that the golfers, You know, golfers have vegos, right, they
don't like being booed or hackled.
Speaker 2 (18:43):
Right.
Speaker 5 (18:44):
Sometimes you might see it happen in a PGA tournament
and you know the golfers were gonna snapped back at
a fan, and you know what happens every once in
a while. It doesn't happen a lot. The Ryder Cup,
it's going to happen, happens to the Americans when they're
playing in Europe. It happens to Europeans when they play
in America, and the Europeans do not like playing on
American soil because they do not like the heckling, especially
the heckling they're going to get from a lot of
(19:05):
drunk New York fans outland. So it's it's definitely very
hard for the away team to win because they're playing
in such an environment like that. It's the lot I mean, Craig,
the last five Ryder Cups have been decided by five
points or more. They have not been very close, basically
due to the fact of being such a home course
(19:28):
advantage for the players. Now, the golf course setup, you know,
it does play a role, and I think this week
actually the Americans will have less of say in the
actual setup of the golf course. But you know, when
they play in America, it's going to be you know,
they're going to try and turn it into a driver fest.
They're going to shorten the rough down, you know, kind
(19:51):
of slow down the green speeds. Make it so that
the Americans' best tool, which is their ability to drive
it very far, plays into their favor when they play
on the the European side. Europeans want to make it
more of a ball striking competition. They want to put
long irons in the hands of the Europeans because they
are much better iron players than the Americans, and they'll
(20:11):
grow up the rough and make the Greens a little
bit faster. So it has played a huge role and
it's why the last five Ryder Cups it's basically been
the home team that's run away with it.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
Last time the visiting team won.
Speaker 5 (20:24):
Was the miracle at Madina and was at twenty twelve,
twenty fourteen, twenty twelve. It's been a long time coming,
but got a feeling that this one's going to be
very tight come this weekend.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
I agree with all you said that the one thing
I want to ask you. You know you said most of
the long most most of the long drivers are on
the American side, but the Europeans do have Ory McElroy
and he can let it fly a little bit. Who
would you say is the best shot maker once you
get past the t shot, who's the best shot maker
for the Americans?
Speaker 5 (20:56):
Scottie Scheffler. He's by far. I mean he's the world
number one. He's the best player on the planet right now.
I mean, he played the pro Cure Championship where I
think maybe six people in this planet knew was happening,
and he won that overtaking Ben Griffin with a huge
comeback on Sunday. He's the best player for the Americans.
It's a big reason why they won it Whistling Straits,
(21:18):
you know, with three and a half points.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
I think he won maybe a little bit more.
Speaker 5 (21:22):
And his rookie performance for the Americans just took down
John Rahm.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
Incredible.
Speaker 5 (21:28):
It was kind of the catalyst for Scotti Scheffer's next season.
His coming out party was the Ryder Cup in twenty
twenty one. But they looked back at twenty twenty three
in Rome. He struggled and the Americans struggled, and Scotty
I think he only won maybe a point point and
a half, but he I mean him and Brooks Koepka
at one point, I think they lost like nine and
(21:50):
seven or nine and eight.
Speaker 1 (21:52):
That means that for those of who you don't know,
that means in match play, you're up by nine holes
with just seven to play. That's about as do. That
means that matches over after eleven holes.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
It was over. Yeah, they got boat raced.
Speaker 5 (22:05):
So for you know, the Americans to win this week,
it's not all on Scotti Scheffer's shoulders. But if he
goes out and wins three and a half points four points,
then you feel pretty good about it. And conversely for
the Europeans, if Roy comes out and he wins, you know,
three and a half points four points, and that probably
says the Europeans have a shot to.
Speaker 2 (22:26):
Win this week. Tell everybody the format, so it's a mixture.
Speaker 5 (22:30):
Sundays is always match play with all twelve players playing
individual matches. On Sunday, Friday and Saturday they play. They
have the morning sessions in the afternoon sessions which is
decided by the home team. So I believe the last
couple of Ryder Cups we've always seen kind of alternate
shot lead off, which is where because they're the teams
(22:53):
or the pairings, you know, two golfers each and then
they play one golf ball and then four ball in
the afternoon. I believe we've seen mostly for we've seen
the shot to begin that's that's the hardest one to win,
especially for the road team.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
That's for example, for folks who don't know, say Scotty
Scheffler and Russell Henley are playing against uh Rasmus hoy
Guard and and uh and then and then yeah yeah,
and so say McCrory hits a shot off the T
and Hoyguard hits one that's not as good.
Speaker 5 (23:27):
Well, no, for the for alternate shot is they only
played one golf ball. That's right, all right golf.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
So that's just so one hits it off the t,
the next one takes the second shot, right.
Speaker 5 (23:36):
But typically the Americans play better than four ball, so
I'm curious to see that it has not been announced. I
do not believe they'll announce. Parents would be all four
golfers play the play with the lowest score wins.
Speaker 1 (23:47):
The hole, and and then and then the last day
is match play one guy against one guy from one
on the twelve on each side.
Speaker 2 (23:56):
Uh okay.
Speaker 1 (23:57):
Uh. ESPN did a ranked all twenty four golfers and
see see if you agree with this number. Twenty four
is Rasmus Hoyguard rookie his rookie appearance in the Ryder
Cup from Denmark.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
Would you say he'd probably the only newcomer for Europe, right, yeah?
Speaker 4 (24:15):
Yes?
Speaker 5 (24:16):
And his twin brother Nikolai was on the Ryder Cup
team two years ago, so the Europeans retaining for the
first time ever in team history. Eleven of the twelve
players on the team and Rasmus is the newest one,
but he did automatically qualify for this team, so just
because he's the newest member does not mean he does
not have good game, because he certainly does.
Speaker 1 (24:36):
The four lowest golfers according to ESPN's rankings in this
are all Europeans. Twenty three is Justin Rose, twenty two
except Straca. Twenty one is Shane Lowry. You don't get
to an American until twenty with Sam Burns, followed by
Ben Griffin of the US, Matt Fitzpatrick of USJJ Spond
the US, Harris English of the US, Colin Morikawa the US,
(24:58):
Robert McIntyre of Europe is at four, Victor Hovelin of
Europe is thirteen. Xander Schoffley the US is twelve. Cameron
doesn't like Sander Schoffley. Cameron Young of the US is eleven.
Terrell Hatton of Europe is number ten, Justin Thomas of
the US at number nine, Loud Vig o'berg from Sweden
and Texas Tech University is number eight. Russell Henley, the
(25:20):
US is seven, Patrick Campley the US is six, bryceon
De'shambeau the US is five, John Rahm of Europe number four,
Tommy Fleetwood of Europe number three, Ry McElroy Europe number two,
and Scotty Scheffler number one. Anything there that just leap
off the page, adge and go why is that guy
ranked that low or that high?
Speaker 5 (25:39):
I think the Europeans, Danflei are coming in with a
lot of players who aren't playing their best golf. Stepstraca
really struggled at East Lake. Victor Hovelin's had a real
up and down season. He's shown some flashes of brilliance,
he's shown some flashes of just absolutely losing his game.
Justin Rose past his age or his age right now,
(26:00):
oldest player on both sides, but he's had his moments
this year. But the Europeans, they're their top guys, are
playing some of the best golf in the world. Roy
mcclroy and Tommy Fleetwood, I mean Tommy Fleetwood winning the
Tour Championship, his first ever PG Tour victory.
Speaker 2 (26:15):
He's looked great.
Speaker 5 (26:15):
And then Rory winning two three weeks ago the Irish
Open came to the last hole needing eagle to force
the playoff and made eagle and then won on the
first playoff wole. So those two guys are playing phenomenal
and they usually play excellent in the Ryder Cup. I mean,
Rory was fantastic in Rome, as was Tommy Fleetwood in
the course. Number one world golfer Scottie Scheffler. So it's
(26:36):
going to be a real fun atmosphere, Craig. We talked
about Beth Page, the rowdy New York fans. I mean they're,
you know, they booting the giants on Sunday night. They're
going the Mets, you know, during their losing streak, So
they are going to cause a lot of havoc. Looking
how this golf course is going to be set up,
It's set up for a lot of fireworks. There's it's
(26:57):
there's going to be some low scoring. The course actually
playing a little bit shorter than it was the twenty
nineteen PGA Championship, which is interesting because usually golf courses
now are getting a little bit longer. But hey, the
twenty nineteen PJ Championship was won by brooks Kaepka number
two was Dustin Johnson and then tying for third was
Jordan's Beeeth and Patrick Cantley. So for the five best
(27:19):
players in that tournament were Americans, so it should favor
the Americans. It does favor the Americans. They are the
favorites to win this golf tournament. You don't have to
be a great putter. It's POA greens, which is similar
to what you put on at Pebble Beach, so you
don't have to be the best putter in the world,
which does favor I think the Americans because I wouldn't
classify outside of Russell Henley, many of those golfers to
(27:40):
be fantastic putters, although Scotty has been great this season.
But it does favor big bombers, and the Americans have
a lot of big bombers on their team.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
So factor fiction.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
You you, Cameron Parker, you Jay Herman, regular dude can
walk in and play that Page Black.
Speaker 5 (27:56):
You can actually public course. You'll probably have to either
camp overnight in the parking lot I think at the
gear take about four four four thirty am, but you can.
You can play it for one hundred and sixty dollars,
which there's some courses here in Austin that are public
that charge of that and are not as nice as
beth Page Black.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
Okay, give me a dark horse for each side. Dark
horse who And I understand with the Ryder Cup's supposed
to be the best of the best, so it's a
stretch to say dark horse. But a guy that maybe
folks aren't expecting to really stand out and play well
and who does who would Obviously that would remove Scottie Scheffler,
(28:35):
it would, it would remove Rory McElroy. Give me a
name on each side that could be a a real deliverer,
perhaps born out of surprise.
Speaker 5 (28:46):
I don't know if he'll be the leading point getter
for the American side, but I think by the end
this week and it'll be Cameron Young will be one
or two.
Speaker 2 (28:53):
Wow.
Speaker 5 (28:54):
I think he's going to have a fantastic week. He's
played at beth Page many times, he's he's from the area,
He's got a heck of a golf swing, he can
hit it pretty far.
Speaker 2 (29:03):
He's playing exceptional golf.
Speaker 5 (29:05):
He just won his first PGA Tour event a few
weeks ago in the fext Cup playoffs. So I like
Cam Young on on the American side. For the Europeans,
who that's a that's a real good one, you know,
I don't he's been playing great. But Robert McIntyre from Scotland,
big shot bob, he just he kind of has that
(29:27):
in factor where kind of like the Sergio Garcia where
even justin Rose, where they show up to a tournament,
to an event and they find their game. And McIntyre
seems to just kind of find his game in big events.
You know, he wasn't playing great. Gets to the US Open,
where was it oak Hill this year or okaman, excuse me,
which is you know, kind of similar to bet Page
(29:47):
and had a chance to win on Sunday. So for
the Europeans, I could see Robert McIntyre having a pretty
big weekend. But I think we'll see Roy McElroy deliver
on the big stage as well.
Speaker 2 (29:59):
Okay, very good. Now you can go pick up your
mom at the airport. Yeah I can.
Speaker 5 (30:02):
Okay, thanks, you'll be in here tomorrow one. I'm out
here and we'll continue. We have actually a former Ryder
Cup playing member coming on the show on Thursday, I believe.
Speaker 2 (30:13):
So really, okay, now are you going?
Speaker 1 (30:17):
You two guys going to continue yacht Rock Wednesday.
Speaker 5 (30:20):
Well, of course, of course, yeah, okay, all right. I
always uphold our traditions here in the Craigway Show.
Speaker 2 (30:26):
I appreciate it. We'll keep the Yata float. All right,
very good, Thanks guys.
Speaker 1 (30:29):
That's Cameron Parker and he'll be in tomorrow and Thursday
for me, and then Jay Carmon gets a fly solo
on Friday for that. You know, you got three days
and seventy two hours you okay for this.
Speaker 3 (30:42):
We'll make you work. We'll have some fun on Friday.
Speaker 1 (30:44):
Okay, we always do, all right, coming up being conceivable here,
I'm thirteen Under the Zone, second hour of the program
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen Under the Zone.
Speaker 2 (30:52):
Yeah, we're happier with us. Thank you, appreciate that.
Speaker 1 (30:55):
As always, Greg wait with you alongside the producer Jay.
Speaker 2 (30:59):
Carmon, come up with a few minutes.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
Greg Tepper, the editor in chief Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
We're talking about college football and high school football in
the state of Texas as we do every week. I
want to go to pro football in the state of
Texas for a moment. Cowboys and Texans a combined one
in five Dallas one and two used to win three,
try to bounce back, and lo and behold. The Cowboys
(31:21):
host the Packers on Sunday Night football. First of all,
Brian Schottenheimer, from his weekly news conference, was asked a
couple of things.
Speaker 2 (31:29):
Here.
Speaker 1 (31:29):
Here's a question with a follow up involved asking for
an update on Ceedee Lamb's condition.
Speaker 6 (31:36):
Yeah, give miss some time, but you know, CD is
a guy that heals quickly and he will do everything
as power to get back.
Speaker 2 (31:45):
But it does look like you'll look miss a little
bit of time, miss.
Speaker 7 (31:47):
A little bit of Thomas the time to frame there.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
Yeah, I'm not gonna put time tablut.
Speaker 6 (31:52):
You know, probably unlikely plays this week, but we'll see.
Speaker 2 (31:56):
Yeah, probably also got nicked up.
Speaker 7 (31:58):
They did come back, but what's just Yeah.
Speaker 2 (32:00):
I think those guys, I think they're okay.
Speaker 6 (32:02):
We're still running some tests on some guys, but yeah,
I think both those guys were kind of you know,
came out pretty clean.
Speaker 1 (32:09):
Okay, all right, there's there's one about that. Secondly, how
does this offense change without Lamb on the field.
Speaker 6 (32:17):
Guys have to step up, and I think that's a
big part of it. I think, uh, you know, we
are very fortunate still have a guy like GP. I
think you know, you saw Terp step up and make
some plays. Jake Ferguson had an awesome game, you know.
But look, I mean, injuries are unfortunately a big part
of this business, and it's hard to replace a guy
like CD.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
But you know, guys got to step up and do that.
Speaker 6 (32:41):
And you know it again, it's gives us a week
to do it. You know, this is really the second
week in a row we've had to adjust kind of
on the fly on game day.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
The week before it was Turp.
Speaker 6 (32:52):
You know, when Turp went out, you got to move
some of your personnels and stuff around. And I had
to do that again yesterday with CD. But got plenty
of ammunition to go do what we gotta do.
Speaker 2 (33:02):
Sounds like he's got like a life saver in his
mouth there, you know.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
Yeah, he's chewing a little gum or candy of some kind.
Speaker 2 (33:07):
You got something on that.
Speaker 1 (33:08):
There one other question about him, This is about Trayvon Diggs,
who has been burned and burned and burned since coming
back from the injury. And he's wondering reporters wondering if
maybe Trayvon Diggs has a confidence problem.
Speaker 6 (33:20):
No, I don't think Trayvon has a confidence problem. I
think Trayvon's a very confident guy. I think it's a
humbling position Skyler to play cornerback in this league. What
I'm excited about is the accountability that he took for Hey, look,
it happens, you know, you miss a quick jam and
guy gets behind you. And when that happens, it's usually
(33:41):
not a good thing for the defense.
Speaker 2 (33:44):
But he took accountability for it.
Speaker 6 (33:45):
He got banged up a little bit, Boom went out
for a few minutes, Boom tested came right back in,
which is great.
Speaker 2 (33:52):
No, I don't think so.
Speaker 6 (33:53):
I think, if anything, I don't worry about Trayvon's confidence.
I think our communication, you know, from Trayvon across.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
The board, needs to be better. But I don't think
Trayvon has a confidence issue, all right.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
And then one from demnco Ryans, the Texans head coach,
speaking of confidence. You know, one thing that Demko had
said that with the game on Sunday was he said,
we're close, really close. We've heard start talk about where
guys are really close on something. So the question was
put to him at his weekly person what did you
mean when you talked about the team being close to
getting wins.
Speaker 8 (34:26):
Well, yeah, what I mean by close, We were close
in our three games, right, We were there in the
fourth quarter, right, we were close to finishing and closing
those games out. There are plays in each game that
we've had these first three games that we didn't finish
and win the game. So I'm not talking about close
as a team, talking about winning the football game. That's
what we're here to do. We're here to win football games.
(34:48):
We've been in position to win those games and we
have not won the game. So we got to find
a way to win the game, right. We got to
make the plays in the fourth quarter of the games
we've been and we got to make those plays to
put us in position and to just ultimately to win
the football game. That's what we're here to do, right,
That's that's what we work tirelessly and hard for, is
(35:09):
to win football games.
Speaker 7 (35:10):
So the games have been.
Speaker 8 (35:12):
Closed, We've been right there in the games, right, So
we just got to find a way to get it done.
Speaker 1 (35:18):
Yeah, it's I don't know if it's as simple as that,
but certainly as clear as he wants to make it
that that's how it's how it's going to be. So
the Texans play the Titans this week, get right game potentially, yeah, possibly,
certainly could could think about that. So yeah, So the
(35:43):
Texans played the Titans and the Cowboys play the Packers,
and you'll hear the Texans and Titans here on thirteen
hundred The Zone Sunday eleven thirty am is the airtime
kickoff at noon Cowboys and Packers Sunday night on that
eight point one FM.
Speaker 2 (36:00):
Okayvin, all right up.
Speaker 1 (36:01):
Next we talked high school in college football with Greg Tepper,
editor in chief Dave Campbells Texas Football Magazine.
Speaker 2 (36:08):
When we continue on thirteen under the Zone.
Speaker 1 (36:09):
Here on this sex and Tuesday, the iconic Willie Nelson
with some whiskey river rolling back. And maybe it's only
apropos that that's the point where we have Greg Tepper,
or the editor in chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine,
not because he's a regular whiskey and biber, although although
if the truth were known, mister Tepper and yours truly
(36:31):
have sipped on a fifteen year old single malt Scott's
whiskey in the.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
Past, have we not? We have?
Speaker 9 (36:40):
I believe we toasted the twenty twenty world champion Los
Angeles Dodgers.
Speaker 2 (36:46):
As we did that.
Speaker 9 (36:47):
Yes, it's memory serves. Yes, we tipped one back a
time or two. It has been it shouldn't be said,
so I'm not ashamed of that.
Speaker 1 (36:57):
I was even thinking about summer twenty twenty four, were
at coaching school when when when after after the I
guess it was Saturday night or whatever, and you were
surrounded by your people because they they they follow you
at your every step for the magazine and you were
(37:17):
you were there and you had a drink in your hand.
Speaker 2 (37:20):
I was like, no, no, no, no, no, hold on. I walked
up to the bar. I came back and I said
try this. And it was a fifteen year old. Yeah talent,
I think.
Speaker 9 (37:29):
I think, yeah, you go to to the to the
listeners out there, if you ever do have the opportunity
to to be at the same bar with Craig Way,
I do highly recommend it. It's it's like, I don't know,
it's kind of like if you've ever flown stand by,
of you're flying standby and then suddenly they just say, oh,
well sir, we happen to have this, uh this first
class ticket available for you to uh then yeah, That's
(37:50):
that's what it's like with whatever. You just end up
in the same in the same bar with Craigway. He uh, somehow, somehow,
you'll you'll get upgraded, you know what I mean, You'll
you'll you'll find if you find yourself in a better
situation than.
Speaker 4 (38:01):
You were previously.
Speaker 1 (38:02):
Okay, So this is a perfect transition then, because I
was going to talk about things like upgrading in status.
Because in the Dave Campbell Texas Football Magazine FBS Power Poll,
Texas A and M still holds on to the one
dot one spot. Texas is no longer number two being
upgraded the Texas Tech Red Raiders four and oh they're
(38:24):
now number two in the poll with Texas at number three.
And by the way, I know a lot of folks
in these parts are really proud of the former Huddo
hit a hippo Will Hammond at quarterbacks are the Red Raiders.
Speaker 9 (38:35):
And let me tell you that I think you've heard.
I'm sure people have heard the talk about Texas Tech
over the course of the past few days. It is
this is that game on Saturday against Utah is probably,
I think among the most important wins for Texas Tech
(38:58):
in recent memory.
Speaker 4 (38:58):
And here's what I mean by it, because it.
Speaker 9 (39:01):
Did, I think, shatter so many of the longstanding conventions
about Texas Tech football. Okay, you can't win against a ranked.
Speaker 4 (39:13):
Team on the road, Well they just did.
Speaker 9 (39:15):
And Okay, well, you can't win a game where it's
a game about physicality and not finesse or not firepower,
Well they just did. You can't win a game a
defensive battle that is going to be based on coming
up with big defensive plays and field position, well they
just did. That is you can't win if you go
in there and you'll lose your most you lose your
(39:36):
starting quarterbacks.
Speaker 4 (39:37):
Certainly, that's the dead sentence. Well, they just did.
Speaker 9 (39:40):
Everything that Texas Tech has been. All those monkeys felt
like they came off of the back the Saturday last
Saturday in Utah, and it was really remarkable to see.
And I think that even in the postgame interview that
you saw with Joey McGuire, he kind of understood the
gravity of the situation and said, oh, we've done something
(40:01):
that that Technic Tech doesn't usually and hasn't done in
quite a while. You know, you hear about that that
this year is different. This year feels like it could
be very different and right now, you know, they get
an open date and then they get really into the
heart of Big twelve season and it's hard to look
up and down that schedule and be sure that they're
(40:21):
going to lose the game. I mean, they've got to,
you know, the tryst at Arizona State looms. I think
that the game that's certainly going to trouble could be tough.
And then they're at Kansas State. Those are the two
toughest road games they get by us, maybe their most
their most difficult you know on paper test well, they
get them in Lubbock. Right now for text to Tech,
(40:43):
it feels like it's all right there in front of them,
and it's all started with what I thought was an
inspired performance there in Provo.
Speaker 1 (40:50):
Here's where I am with Joey McGuire, and we both
have known him a long time, even going back that
called three of the state championship games when he was
at Ceedar Hill. He's he he always has had an
unshakable belief and confidence in his skill as a head
coach and how to get the right pilm. Now, now
I would say that there is some proof of concept
(41:12):
there that there is the fact that he's got even
more for his guys to believe in. And yes, people
can downplay it all they want, but with that ANIL
bankroll that's going going their way as well. Now he
has that momentum ball rolling where he can just kind of,
you like to use a defensive line mentality, pin your
ears back and go after the quarterback. He can coach
(41:34):
the way we saw him coach at the high school level,
modified for the collegiate game.
Speaker 9 (41:40):
Well, and I agree with you, he has certainly kind
of become a bit of a chameleon and and said
and found a way to build a team that looks.
Speaker 4 (41:50):
Like a winner.
Speaker 9 (41:51):
And there is going to be a lot of talk
and I understand it about specifically all of the you know,
the the transfers they got in and then IL and that,
and certainly that is true. I would also say to you, hey,
let's take a look at a lot of the guys
who are starring for this team, and a lot of
(42:14):
these guys were either recruited by Joey MacGuire or they
are Texans that had come home. I mean, to me,
the story is that this is in many respects a
very Texan team.
Speaker 2 (42:26):
Look at the guy.
Speaker 9 (42:26):
Look at the quarterback who started the year, Baron Morton
in Eastland product. Well, they lose their starting quarterback. We
don't know for how long, but certainly they bring in
their backup, Will Hammond. A houtto guy right who was
the real star of the running game recently, Cameron Dickey
out of Crockett High School.
Speaker 4 (42:41):
Right.
Speaker 9 (42:42):
And then you go and you look on the defensive side,
which has been such a revelation for them. Shield would
I think their defensive coordinator has been I think one
of the rising stars in college football in the past
couple of years. And who was the star of the
defenses past year or in the past week. It was
Jacob Rodriguez, their linebacker in which Tom falls rider. This
is a true Texan team that they've built. And yes,
(43:05):
you know a couple of those guys specifically, you know
Rodriguez was a transfer. He was from Virginia, but he
comes home and take to join the text to Tech
team and he has he has really helped to elevate
this defense. I just think that when you take a
look at this roster. We said it in the in
the outset before the season that Texas Tech from a
roster perspective, looked like the most talented team in the
(43:28):
Big Twelve. Right now, four games in, it's hard to
argue that that is two far off base.
Speaker 4 (43:34):
Still ways to go.
Speaker 9 (43:35):
But I would say right now for Techa Tech, it's
pretty much as good as it's been.
Speaker 1 (43:40):
Talking football in the State of Texas with Greg Tepper,
editor in chief Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. Let me
ask you about three of the four private FBS programs, s,
m U and TCU. We're hearing that probably they will
never see the skillet game again. Never is a long time.
But there's that, and then and then of course Baylor
(44:03):
falling a tough game on the walk off field goal
day Arizona State. What do you what's your take on
those three programs right now? Well, then, you know, first
of all, to take your first part, I think we'll
see TCUs and again, it's too good of a rivalry.
I think eventually like everyone's going to kind of settle
in and realize how much they miss each.
Speaker 4 (44:23):
Other and and they're going to end up playing again.
It'll happen.
Speaker 9 (44:26):
But I do think that you know, for TCU, we
said before the season that we felt like this was
a really important season for them, and what I think
has been really impressive for them is that offensively, it
does feel like they've figured things out. And Josh Hoover
is speaking of you know, the Texas products. The Rockwall
Heath kid has been one of the best quarterbacks in
(44:49):
the Big Twelve.
Speaker 4 (44:50):
I mean, he has been terrific.
Speaker 9 (44:51):
You know, he's completing almost seventy percent of his passes,
he's taking care of the football. He has been terrific.
And I think you add in what is a revitalized
receiver corps with Eric McCallister and Jordan Dwyer and Joseph
May and Jack and this is a dangerous offense. And
(45:11):
I think that you know, last week against SMU, UH,
they felled down. SMU fell down early, and they fought back.
But every time they fought back, TCU had a CounterPunch,
and that I think has been kind of the issue
for them the past couple of years, UH, is that
they take it. They take a punch, and they'd have
to kind of load up to get ready to punch back.
(45:32):
There was an immediate and immediate response and an immediate resiliency.
I think from the tasties you team that I think
really bodes well for them heading in to the heart
of conference play.
Speaker 4 (45:42):
And then for Baylor.
Speaker 9 (45:44):
You know that that's a disappointing loss. I think against
Arizona State. This is a team that, you know, they're
really hard to get a read on because they've got
the two losses that I don't think you can necessarily,
you know, say too much more about.
Speaker 4 (46:00):
You know, lost Auburn.
Speaker 9 (46:01):
I think it's ah ok, you know, they lose on
the last second field.
Speaker 4 (46:04):
Goal to Arizona State.
Speaker 9 (46:06):
I think everything is still out in front of them.
But the issue is going to be their defense is going.
Speaker 4 (46:10):
To be a problem all year long.
Speaker 9 (46:12):
This has been that's been a real issue for them
early and it's going to continue to be an issue.
This is a team that's giving up nearly five and
a half yards per play. They are giving up four
yards to carry. This team is defensively going to have
some issues. They're gonna have to outscore their problems.
Speaker 2 (46:32):
Now.
Speaker 9 (46:32):
I do think that they've got the guy and sorry
Robertson certainly to do that, and some of the playmakers
they've got, like Josh Cameron on the outside. You know,
the Bryce and Washington has been a real revelation for
running back spot for them and the Franklin kid. But
I think that defense is ultimately what's going to hold
them back and keep them from achieving the kind of
stuff that we thought might be available to them in
(46:52):
the outset, specifically contending for a baseball championship. This still
could be a team that finished eighty four or something
like that. But I think that unless that defense figures
something out that we just haven't seen through the first
quarter of the first third of the season, it does
feel like that's going to hold them back.
Speaker 1 (47:10):
Who's moving forward A bigger surprise to you North Texas
who you now have as your highest ranked G six
school at four and oh or Rice at three and one.
Speaker 4 (47:22):
Hey how about the Rice House?
Speaker 9 (47:24):
Yeah, got Abel has said has installed that kind of
If you haven't seen Rice play football, They're a fun
looking offense right now.
Speaker 1 (47:33):
They are.
Speaker 4 (47:34):
They're running the ball.
Speaker 9 (47:35):
They have the fifteenth best rushing offense in all of
college football, you know, averaging nearly two or fifty yards
per game on the ground.
Speaker 4 (47:43):
They're a lot of fun.
Speaker 9 (47:45):
And now I will say that I think you take
a look at who they've beaten so far. You know
that with preview A and M Charlotte, Louisiana. Rice is
not in the position to start apologizing for wins, but
I will say that it does feel like the part
of the schedule is really going to start coming up,
most notably starting this week when they traveled to take
(48:05):
on a Navy team that you know, you want to
talk about running the name all that game might be out,
might be over forty five minutes, but I would say,
for it's got to be North Texas. I mean, now,
last week they tried very hard to spit the bit
against Army.
Speaker 2 (48:18):
Boyd Boy did that.
Speaker 9 (48:22):
They they were That was a game I turned off.
I was like, oh, they're in control. Nothing to see here.
And then suddenly I got a text message actually from
our executive producer and uh and and North Texas alum
Ashley Pickle, who said, hey, you might want to turn
this game back on. It's it's getting too close for comfort.
But they ended up pulling out the win. And the
bottom line is that this offense is going to be
(48:43):
incredibly difficult to stop. Because Drew Mastamaker is playing at
an extremely high level. McKenzie the guild looks like he
is the real deal at the running back spot. And
then they've got trios wide receivers in Wyatt Young, Cameron Dorner,
and Miles Coleman, a name that I know folks down
there in that part of the world.
Speaker 4 (48:59):
Remember, Finally, Uh, they.
Speaker 9 (49:00):
Can play and playing simple. The other thing that is
impressive to me about their defense, and I know they
gave up a bunch of yards late in that game's army,
but they take the ball away. They are they are,
they are bouncing on mistakes and they take the ball away.
As long as they do that, they are going to
be a true contender, not just in the American but
if you're a if you're contender the American, you're a
contender to grab that G five spot in the in
(49:23):
the college football playoffs. And at that point, you know,
we're talking to heavy stuff. A lot of room between
now and then, but for now, it's it couldn't They're
there for North Texas. You know.
Speaker 1 (49:32):
The funny thing is everybody remembers Miles Coleman playing, uh,
playing there for Vandergrift. What they may forget is that
Drew Mestamaker was the starting strong safety for Vandergrift.
Speaker 2 (49:43):
He was the backup quarterback. He was the starting safety.
Yeah for Drew.
Speaker 1 (49:47):
Sanders, who had pretty good quarterback running the show at
the time.
Speaker 9 (49:52):
And now they've got a nice connection going to Denton.
Speaker 2 (49:54):
Yeah, yeah, no doubt about it.
Speaker 1 (49:56):
Talking and that will help us transitional high schoo football
talking Greg except here editor in Che'd take Campbell's Texas
Football Magazine bigger upsets, Walks hatch You for Duncanville rock
Ball over North.
Speaker 9 (50:07):
Crowley, it's probably it's probably Walks at you over in
Duncanville for a couple of reasons. First of all, it's
district game. It's a district ball game, and that obviously
resonates in a huge way. Furthermore, this is a North
Crowley team, I think, just because we'd see more of them.
Duncanville only played one game, so it's still kind of
(50:29):
a mystery. But North Crawley had looked shaky. They kind
of I said this in other places, North Crowley kind
of played with fire and escaped. They played with fire
and they finally got burned this week, and against a
good rock ball team that I think went out there
and played pretty fearlessly. But for Walks and Hatchie, this
is a pretty seismic win for Shane Pollinson's ball club
(50:50):
and to go out there and to now take an
opportunity to really take command of Districts eleven six A
if they can beat the Sota this week, which they
have here to have gotten the Wheels a little bit more.
Speaker 4 (51:02):
Back on than their first two weeks.
Speaker 9 (51:05):
You know, but I think you've got CCU commit at
quarterback and Jerry Meyer you have got, and more importantly,
you have got any defense, a thumping, thunderous defense led
by Jake Wan Snell who laid the end of the
year on a fourth down to really seal that victory
for Watsahatchie.
Speaker 4 (51:21):
I think that this is a.
Speaker 9 (51:23):
Walkstashy team at times to start really paying attention to
I think they announced themselves to the state last week
when their win over Duncan Hilly.
Speaker 4 (51:30):
It was it was really impressive.
Speaker 2 (51:35):
Let me get your thoughts on this is.
Speaker 1 (51:37):
I asked you for a measuring stick about Southlake Carol
and clearly you know a little over a week ago,
and clearly what about Allen who you've moved up so.
Speaker 2 (51:46):
High now in the rank.
Speaker 9 (51:50):
So this is this has been a point of contention
around the day of Campbells Texas football offices because right now,
and this is strange to say, but since same Division
one feels about as wide open as it's ever felt
in quite some time, because it's normally we're on some
sort of march towards Duncanville North Shore right now. Last
(52:12):
week not here, obviously there was some pretty shifting sands
there where you were able to get.
Speaker 4 (52:17):
North Crowley and west Lake. Well, right now we.
Speaker 9 (52:20):
Project Westlake to go Division two. Obviously this year twenty
six six A is going to play out and we'll figure.
Speaker 4 (52:24):
Out where that goes. So then it really opens up
in the sixth d A Division one at North.
Speaker 9 (52:29):
Crowley stated Duncanville has lost, North Bill Clean Park, North
Shore has lost and I'm here to tell you that
Alan might be the favorite in sixth day Division one.
At least through the first four weeks. They have been dominant.
They have been exceptional defensively.
Speaker 4 (52:48):
And they are humming right now.
Speaker 9 (52:50):
The way that they're playing, they're going to be awfully
hard to beat because I think that this is just
a year in six A Division one that opens up
for them. You know a lot of the contenders, And
it's a strange thing to say because in the past
few years, we kind of considered sixth A Division one
to be the I don't want to say superior bracket,
but a lot of the very best teams, the highest
(53:12):
ranked teams have ended up going to the sixth A
Division one bracket. This is a situation this year in
which we may end up having a lot more teams
go into.
Speaker 4 (53:21):
Sixth eight Division two.
Speaker 9 (53:22):
And if that's the case, then things open up for
a team like Alan where I think that that the
sky has the limited for them. This the team is
playing exceptional football and in a in a universe, in
a in a world where the a lot of the
sixth day Division one teams have shown some flaws.
Speaker 4 (53:37):
Right now, the best team.
Speaker 9 (53:39):
In sixty Division one for the first four weeks I
think has been Allan Eagles, which I know for for
folks who.
Speaker 4 (53:45):
Who maybe missed the.
Speaker 9 (53:46):
Kyler Murray era, this is feels awfully familiar. So this
is a this is a pair of shuts you slip
right back into.
Speaker 2 (53:54):
Yeah, yeah, it's it's a good point.
Speaker 1 (53:56):
Okay, let me uh let me get your at the
it's on the meanest thing we do each week, as
we say, have you uh transferred giver you have your
choice of three games, and you can choose to I
will uh uh say that one of the ones I
give to you. I when you do it to me
on Thursday, you will not include because it's the game
I'm calling uh for victory Plasma. We'll start with six A,
(54:18):
and I will ask you, uh if if you had
your choice, would it be Waksatchi de Sota in uh
six a?
Speaker 2 (54:28):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (54:29):
Would it be in for a Division one number one
Salina against number six Frisco panther Creek both are unbeaten
and uh?
Speaker 2 (54:40):
And then the third Where did I do with my
third one? I had it written down here? Uh? What
did I do with my third one? I had a
third one? I went to the wrong division here?
Speaker 4 (54:51):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (54:51):
The the third choice? Oh yeah, I know what it
was going to be. Third choice road game for Pleasant Grove,
coming all the loss at home to Kilbour, going to
six ranks sunny Dale.
Speaker 2 (55:04):
That was that was the doors had.
Speaker 4 (55:07):
So that's a whale of a ball game too.
Speaker 9 (55:09):
And it's a pleasant Grove an opportunity to reset against
the sun But sun Vale is a team that's playing
exceptionally well right now, and I'm excited to see what
they do. My answer is probably gonna be the game
that you're on a call for there with Slim at
Tanta Creek. That's a whale of a ball game. And
what's funny is that if four A, you know, obviously,
(55:29):
you know every comic book.
Speaker 2 (55:30):
Is somebody's first.
Speaker 9 (55:31):
Four A is the third largest classification in Texas high
school football. And yet from a prospect perspective, I mean,
if you're a recruit, Nick, it doesn't get.
Speaker 4 (55:40):
A whole lot there than that.
Speaker 9 (55:41):
You have Bo Ventley, the Oklahoma commit. You have got
the logan Goodiere's Lupia Jeanie, They've got the line is loaded,
a big offensive line going up against guys like Jalen
a lot right. This this is a loaded Donovan Webb
the Texas techiment at safety. This is a loaded Panther
Creek team with front talent. I am really excited. And
(56:02):
by the way, it is of course a district ball game,
which is going to make this all the more important
because the winner of this game will at the very
least be in the driver's seat to win the district
of the district title, get that number one seed in
the playoffs. The loser still has to face, by the way,
a very difficult district. It's not like it gets a
whole lot easier from here in that very difficult and
(56:25):
deep district. But I think that that ball game between
Flina and Pampa Creek has an opportunity to really steal
the show. I will be listening to your adults tones
on Friday night because that is a that's a heck
of a ball game. And if you're a high school
football fan's a great game. And if you are a
recruiting and you're just saying, oh, I want to watch
some of the best players in the state who are
(56:46):
going to be playing at the next level, lock in
for this one because this is going to be a
lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (56:51):
Free on the Victory Sports app, followed by Temper and
Pickle there on the Victory Sports app at ten thirty
and online at Texas Football dot Com for the complete
recap of all of us. Hey, you know what scares me?
Here's here's here's enough to shake you to your foundation.
Bill Elliott, the head coach at Salona, Great Guy, told
me this morning that Solana is growing by one hundred
(57:14):
and eighty people a week and and that uh and
that in the next realignment there'll be A five A,
which I know your guys have written about. He said,
by the end of the decade, we're going to be
a six A and maybe a six A Division one
program line.
Speaker 9 (57:29):
Now, it is it's insane that the growth out there.
When we wrote the story of the gatefold feature in
Daia Campbell Texas Football the summer edition. Uh, and they
are the fastest growing city in America, and it is
it is shocking if you have not been in Salina,
even in like the last like eighteen months, it is
almost unrecognizable out there. The growth out there is incredible.
(57:50):
And you know, people people who remember Solana as being
this like small school powerhouse.
Speaker 4 (57:55):
Uh uh, not anymore, guys.
Speaker 9 (57:57):
This is this is the last year of quote unquote
small school Salina because it is only up from here.
Speaker 1 (58:03):
Uh. He said. This is how he knows they're exploding.
They're getting an AGB now, so that's that's how I know.
Speaker 9 (58:11):
Okay, well that's then at that point, at that point,
min As, we'll get an.
Speaker 1 (58:15):
Airport, right, catch Tepper and Pickle there on front day.
And you should subscribe at Texas football dot com. Get
you content access, access to watch Texan live telecasts and
everything else.
Speaker 2 (58:30):
As well.
Speaker 1 (58:31):
Hey, I appreciate it, and we'll look forward to the
next time around.
Speaker 4 (58:36):
My friends.
Speaker 1 (58:36):
All right, thanks, all right, that's Greig Tapper, editor in
chief Dave Campbell's Texas Football Max. There are little bit
of airports out there in Collin County and Denton County
out in the area. They might need a bigger one
now with all the explosive growth of Frisco. And I
did say when I was talking with the Frisco head
coach Clint Serrata, said, uh, fact or fiction. If you
(58:58):
stand on any roof in the city limits of Frisco
and go turn around three hundred and sixty degrees, you'll
see four or five high schools. He said, that's an
absolute fact. They have twelve high schools, twelve five A
high schools in Frisco. He said, We're just all around
one another. All right, we'll continue when we get right
here on the sports radio AM thirteen under the zone
(59:20):
of the irradio app ecs in Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (59:23):
Who are we rolling back with here? Rolling back with
the chicks little Lubbock or leave it?
Speaker 3 (59:27):
But the Red Raiders rising in the rankings?
Speaker 2 (59:29):
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (59:31):
And Natalie Maine's uncle Steve, great guy, a senior associate
athletic director of Texas Tech. Really good, dude, there some
breaking news of kind of important stuff. The quarterback of
the excuse me, the quarterback of the Oklahoma Sooners, John Mateer,
(59:52):
is going to miss some time due to a hand
injury that's going to require surgery. Suffered the injury in
the first quarter of Saturday's win over Auburn. He finished
the game in twenty four thirty six for two hundred
and seventy one yards in a touchdown. He also ran
for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. But he's going
to miss some time, and I'm looking at wonder before
(01:00:15):
you're looking another way that Pat Forty is saying he's
probably going to miss the Red River rivalry game, probably
going to be out three weeks.
Speaker 3 (01:00:20):
Yeah, they're saying three or more weeks. And Pat Forty
sort of left it where the expectation is that he
returns this season.
Speaker 1 (01:00:30):
This season at some point, Brent Venables said in the
release today they head coach. After consulting with medical experts,
it became clear that surgery is the best option for
John and his short and long term future. He's extremely
disappointed he will miss some game action but it's eager
to correct the issue and move forward. As he is
with everything, we know, he will be aggressive with his
(01:00:50):
rehabilitation work to return to the field as quickly as possible.
Speaker 2 (01:00:54):
Ross Ellinger says, three or more weeks.
Speaker 1 (01:00:57):
Okay, Well, the Dallas is three weeks off, so it
would be two weeks from this Saturday.
Speaker 2 (01:01:04):
So it's two and a half weeks we're looking.
Speaker 1 (01:01:05):
So there's a pretty good chance he's going to miss
the Texas OU game on that. Michael Hawkins junior sophomore.
Remember he played against Texas as a freshman last year
and had some success and then the long wrange really
(01:01:26):
just pretty much dominated the game a lot. They won
at thirty four to three, but he got in there
when Jackson Arnold was struggling. But Michael Hawkins will start
the game for the Sooners against Kent State on October fourth.
Speaker 2 (01:01:39):
See now this helps.
Speaker 1 (01:01:40):
They they have an open date and then they have
Kent State, who or as they say, in the bottom
ten state of Kent might be the worst.
Speaker 3 (01:01:50):
Well they might need they might need Clark Kent to
win that game.
Speaker 1 (01:01:54):
You know what, they can't be the worst D one
FBS team because they won a game even though it
was over an FCS opponent, so you really can't say
that the worst, but they're definitely toward the bottom part
of it. So we'll see, we'll see where all that goes.
So yeah, that's quite the bit of news they are
(01:02:18):
coming down on that. Also big news ACC announcing that
they will move to nine conference games. They agreed on
it yesterday and released today. They'll move to a nine
game conference schedule after meetings in Charlotte, joining the other
Power four leagues and going to nine conference games, and
as part of the new scheduling model, the league teams
(01:02:40):
will now be required to play ten Power four games.
Most teams will begin playing begin playing nine conference games
plus one Power Four game in twenty twenty six.
Speaker 2 (01:02:52):
So there you are, all right.
Speaker 1 (01:02:53):
We'll be back to wrap up Power number two on
thirteen Under the Zone, third and final hour of the
program here on Sports Radio thirteen hundred The Zone. Glad
to have you with us Craig Way alongside the producer
Jay Herman. Glad to take your questions, your thoughts, your
comments as well on whatever is crossing your mind. All
you have to do is text the word Texas follow
(01:03:16):
by your question or comment. To eight one five three zero,
So text the word Texas follow by your question or
comment to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging and
data aids may apply. I didn't get a chance really
to get too much into it yesterday because of it
(01:03:38):
being a Longhorns Monday, and we were busy obviously with
a lot of Sark sound and things of that nature.
So I didn't really get a chance to talk too
much about it. We did, my cardbol Harden I did
talk a little bit about this on in the run
up to the Sark news conference, uh, and so we
(01:04:01):
did do that, but we didn't get into much about
the about the release of the permanent or not permanent again,
the the annual opponents, So we didn't get a chance
to get too much into that. We talked a little
(01:04:24):
bit about it, but not but not an awful lot
about it and the release of that. And there were
there were a lot of questions I think that came
out of this, with with folks going, uh, why is
this team playing this team? And why why aren't these
two teams playing and all that other kind of stuff.
(01:04:45):
So all of that kind of factored into it. I
think pretty much everybody was in agreement that the announcement
when it came down, and in that announcement it had
of course Texas against Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas A and M.
(01:05:12):
I think everybody kind of nodded in agreement on that.
It kind of it made a lot of sense, But
there were other people who didn't understand, like, for example,
Texas A and M having Missouri as an annual opponent
and along with Texas and LSU and not having Oklahoma
(01:05:36):
or Arkansas in on that. There were other folks that
were wondering why Alabama wasn't playing Georgia every year. You know,
Georgia and Auburn is the oldest rivalry in the SEC
of the regular schools who played, it's older than any
of the other ones. So they were going to protect
that rivalry. And Alabama Tennessee is more of a rivalry
(01:05:59):
than al Alabama Georgia. It just is they've played more regularly,
play every year third Saturday of October they've been playing,
So it made sense for that still to be an annual,
you know, an annual game. So it just it just
made more sense for it to be like that. So,
but there's always going to be some you can't schedule
(01:06:23):
the exact right amounts every time. And if you say, why,
why can't you Because let's be honest, not every school
in the SEC has three annual traditional rivals. They don't
give me the three that Mississippi State would have.
Speaker 3 (01:06:42):
Ole miss and that's kind of that's it. So they
get Vanderbilt in Alabama.
Speaker 2 (01:06:47):
Right right, exactly, so.
Speaker 3 (01:06:51):
So Alabama doesn't get LSU.
Speaker 1 (01:06:54):
No, but here's the thought process behind that. Alabama already
has Auburn and Tennessee on their right. Do you give
them a murderer's row of three? I think that has
to go into the factory as well. Texas kind of
gets a little bit of that, although Arkansas obviously has
been up and down.
Speaker 2 (01:07:10):
But that was a logical, sensible rival.
Speaker 3 (01:07:16):
That is that the logic then behind Auburn Vanderbilt because
Auburn has Georgia the oldest rival, like you mentioned, they
also have the Iron Bowl with Alabama exactly, so they
get Vanderbilt in there.
Speaker 1 (01:07:27):
Yep, yep, Because some folks, how could you not have
Florida Auburn, Florida has Georgia on there. Who's the other
one on Florida? They have South Carolina? I believe is
one of them in Kentucky and Kentucky. See, Kentucky is
another one. Now Kentucky has what Tennessee? Right, yes, and Florida,
(01:07:50):
and the other one is South Carolina. South Carolina. Again,
that's a swing thing. Here, tell me who's South CA?
Speaker 7 (01:07:56):
You know who?
Speaker 1 (01:07:56):
South Carolina's number one rival is Clemson out of the
a SEC, it's not anyone in the SEC. George is
the closest thing to it.
Speaker 3 (01:08:03):
And they get that along with Florida and Kentucky.
Speaker 1 (01:08:06):
Right, Missouri, there's another one. What are you gonna have
for Missouri? Okay, Oklahoma? Maybe I guess right? They have
Arkansas they do? Yeah, okay, those two makes sense. Anything
else is pot luck.
Speaker 3 (01:08:20):
Well, they went to Texas a and and going back
to your balancing things out the aggi's other two rivals
are Texas and they got LSU.
Speaker 1 (01:08:28):
Yes exactly. So that's why that swings the way it does.
When you have Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt has one rival and one
rival only really Tennessee. So who else did Vanderbilt draw?
Speaker 3 (01:08:42):
They have Auburn YEP, and they have Mississippi State. Okay,
that's pretty random. Vanderbilt Mississippi or Mississippi.
Speaker 1 (01:08:47):
State has one rival, so you know Ole miss it
so it kind of makes sense for Ole miss what
do they have.
Speaker 3 (01:08:57):
Well, they have the egg Bowl, Yep, they have Lsu.
Speaker 2 (01:08:59):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (01:08:59):
We should be that's a long time traditional rivalry, oh
Miss LSU.
Speaker 3 (01:09:04):
And then how about this Craig Oklahoma.
Speaker 1 (01:09:06):
Yeah, that's the one that's the outlier out there. And
you could make the case saying Oklahoma should have Texas
and you could possibly say Missouri and then probably an M,
or you could just say the three could be round
robin Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas, A and M. But it
throws the rest of the scheduling formula off if you
(01:09:29):
just throw that up there against the wall. So that's
that's the reasoning behind this. And again I know that
some folks were didn't understand why certain matchups were.
Speaker 2 (01:09:41):
Made because it's just the way.
Speaker 1 (01:09:44):
It's like trying to put all the puzzle pieces in
one It just doesn't work that way. If you say
pick the three most you can't find three traditional rivals
for Mississippi State or Vanderbilt or South Carolina or Kentucky.
Speaker 3 (01:09:57):
Yeah, the hardest, the strangest pairings to me, I mean
Starkfille's Uscaloosa very close at least geographic.
Speaker 2 (01:10:04):
They are the strange ones.
Speaker 1 (01:10:06):
But there's no rivalry at all between those schools, none, zero.
The the one connective tissue between those two was Sylvester Krums,
who played at Alabama and coach Mississippi STI that was it.
That's it, And you're right. When I was looking at
flights how to get into Starkville, let me tell you
this was a derby trying to get in there. It
(01:10:30):
ultimately came down to Tupelow, which is about an hour north,
because couldn't get into Starkville. They're just all flights have
been booked adminst there's a small airport in Starkville, charters
going in and out, but very little comm commercial stuff.
And folks had booked their tickets months and months and
months ago. Can you imagine booking a ticket over a
year in advance to go to Starkville. That's but a
(01:10:54):
lot of people did. So we got lucky on some
and and and landed on Tupolo, So that worked out.
But in so looking at other places, right, you're talking
about a two and a half hour drive from Jackson,
You're talking about a three hour drive from Memphis. If
he did a Memphis to Oxford's an hour makes sense
to kind of go in there. Uh, and then Tuscaloosa
(01:11:17):
is like two hours, but there's no real good schedule
of commercial flights going. You would have to go to
Birmingham another hour. It Ultimately, for me, it came down
to and that before the Tupelo came open, it was
either going to be Memphis and drive a long way,
or it was going to be Meridian, which is ninety
miles away. But the flights were limited, the flight choices
(01:11:38):
were limited where you could go into Meridian, and ultimately
it ended up not mattering.
Speaker 2 (01:11:44):
We landed on Tupelo and it worked out okay. But
to the point.
Speaker 1 (01:11:49):
For Startville and Tuscalusa to be within bus driving distance
or one another, they're not rivals.
Speaker 3 (01:11:56):
It's just dark not really in any sport them. No,
they're just not. Like I'm going down the list, I
didn't even think of it. So that that one is
geographically relevant perhaps, and that's a stretch at best. But
then you also have kind of the odd pairings of
Oklahoma and Ole miss.
Speaker 1 (01:12:14):
Yeah, that that one, that one is a definite outlier there.
There's no question about it. And the fact that they
have Missouri and Texas on there. There's two rivals on
there for the Sooners. But the third one, yeah, that
one they could have. Folks would say, well, they could
have added Arkansas or the Arkansas has a lot to
choose from.
Speaker 2 (01:12:32):
What are Arkansas's opponents?
Speaker 3 (01:12:33):
Arkansas obviously, Texas, Texas, LSU, the Golden YEP, and Missouri.
Speaker 2 (01:12:40):
Yeah, I mean that's logical, right.
Speaker 3 (01:12:42):
The other the other outlier to me and I just oh,
there it was Auburn Vanderbilt seems a little random.
Speaker 1 (01:12:48):
It is, but it's again that's I think helping to
make it a softer landing for Auburn. Right, And Vanderbilt
just needs opponents. Same thing South Carolina, same thing with
with Kentucky. They just they just need they just need
opponents on that. And I would also say this too
for anybody who's all bunged up about this deal. Remember
(01:13:15):
every school now with sixteen and going to a nine
game conference scheduleist was the key in making this work.
Has three annual rivals, and then you rotate six other opponents,
and you will play every team in the SEC at
least once every two years, and you will host every
(01:13:39):
team in the SEC at least once every four years.
That's a pretty good formula, I think, so, I think
it makes sense. And in one more note about the
ACC announcing that they were going to nine conference games,
and I think, I won't say it's silly, but I
think it's a little soon, perflous.
Speaker 2 (01:14:01):
Let me put it to you that way.
Speaker 1 (01:14:03):
For the ACC, in their scheduling model to say that
their member schools are required to play ten Power four
games ten.
Speaker 2 (01:14:17):
And you go, nine of them are conference games. You
only have to have one.
Speaker 1 (01:14:24):
Now, maybe I said I don't think it's silly.
Speaker 2 (01:14:27):
I thought it was maybe superfluous. Maybe it isn't.
Speaker 1 (01:14:30):
Maybe if you didn't mandate that you got to play,
you have to play at least What this means is
you have to play at least one Power for non
conference game. It would keep everybody from scheduling there in
the ACC, the Campbell's and Western Carolinas and Gardner Webbs.
(01:14:53):
And I say all this because all of those are
from my home state.
Speaker 2 (01:14:58):
Anyone listening from Bowie's Creek, Yeah right, exactly.
Speaker 1 (01:15:01):
Uh, you know it would keep them from playing them,
or you know, a full three non conference games of
FCS opponents. I just named three, and then there's then
there's other ones, you know, uh Mercer down and making Georgia,
South Carolina State you know those as well, and even
(01:15:24):
ones that are FBS but not Power for Coastal Carolina
would would be one of those. Old Dominion would be
one of those. You know that, so East Carolina would
be another one.
Speaker 3 (01:15:42):
I don't know how to feel about this change.
Speaker 2 (01:15:44):
Not a power what do you mean, well, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:15:47):
Some of those games give the smaller programs not only
the financial benefits, but the you know, the chance to
measure up. No.
Speaker 1 (01:15:54):
I listen, and as a person who went to school
and worked on the radio broadcast when they were an
FCS program then it was one double a North Texas,
I get what you're saying on that. All this requirement
is is that they play one ou no one. They
can They can play two FCS if they want to,
or two you know, g six schools if they want,
(01:16:17):
you know, you could you could have North Carolina State
will be required to play at least one Power for school. Okay,
all right, let's say they have their nine game conference
schedule and then they happen and they happen to schedule
West Virginia. Okay, now you got two. You can go
Western Carolina and and Campbell if you want. You can
(01:16:39):
go Richmond and Old Dominion if you want.
Speaker 2 (01:16:43):
Yeah, I get it.
Speaker 3 (01:16:44):
For the conference that they want to raise their strength
of schedule.
Speaker 2 (01:16:48):
As all about the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (01:16:50):
As the playoff looks at that in under a tighter
and tighter microscope.
Speaker 2 (01:16:55):
It's all about the playoff. You got to you gotta
do that. Listen.
Speaker 1 (01:16:59):
That was Sayankey's pulpit speech to the SEC ads and coaches.
We have to have nine conference games, and we have
to schedule at least one powerful they and they mandated
the same thing. Acc much like the Big twelve is reactionary.
They're reactive, not proactive. So well, well they're doing it.
We're going to do it, you know that kind of thing.
Speaker 2 (01:17:20):
But the Alliance yeah, yeah, right, so yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:17:25):
They also this is all about the the little you know,
bump you're going to get by playing power for schools
in non conference play and to the a SEC's credit.
And this is why I said it might have been
a little superfluous. Multiple According to the story, multiple a
SEC teams already have return non conference or neutral site
(01:17:52):
non conference game schedule for next season.
Speaker 2 (01:17:54):
Listen to this group.
Speaker 1 (01:17:56):
Florida State at Alabama, Clemson at LSU, SMU at Baylor's.
Speaker 2 (01:18:04):
That's a couple of.
Speaker 1 (01:18:05):
Power fours in Waco next year, Duke in Illinois, Georgia
Tech at Colorado, North Carolina, TCU, and Dublin, Ireland where
the Vikings and Steelers played this weekend, by the way,
in Virginia, West Virginia and Charlotte.
Speaker 2 (01:18:22):
So there's already a lot of those line up. It's
just like what we was.
Speaker 1 (01:18:25):
Talking about this with Sark on this show, and he said,
I don't know what our scheduling model is on down
the road, but I think we're in good shape, and said,
let me help you. You've got a power for at
least one Power four game on your schedule the rest
of the decade. It's already done, unless somebody moves away
from it or backs out of it or whatever. Next year,
(01:18:45):
Ohio State comes to austin twenty twenty seven, Michigan comes
to austin twenty twenty eight, begins a home and Home
of Notre Dame over twenty eight twenty nine, and then
I think thirty and thirty one is Arizona State. There
may be another may be mixed around or something in there.
But and then, and then, in addition to this, and
this goes back to this model conversation I'm talking about,
(01:19:07):
Texas also has UTSA every even year to the rest
of the decade that started in twenty twenty two, twenty four,
twenty six, twenty eight and thirty. They've got They've got
UTSA all the way through. Texas State leads it off
here next year, first time ever, and.
Speaker 3 (01:19:24):
Then in youtub some audios coming up and.
Speaker 1 (01:19:26):
UTAP as well, so and and and some of that
is helping also keep it in state and within the
university system. That makes sense too. I understand that same
thing with UTSA clearly. All Right, Up next, more on
the NFL scene when we continue on thirteen under the
Zone the Game, the One and Only George Trath b
(01:19:47):
I love this in Conson does his song because of
course most most of his songs are really really good
in concert anyway, but I always enjoy that ace in
the hole. All right, continuing on this tax and Tuesday,
speaking of Texas related football teams, let's talk about the
Cowboys again, coming off the loss to the Bears. They
took a beating on defense. They just took a beating
(01:20:10):
on it. But first new Storal offense. A lot of
buzz about the fact that Ceedee Lamb was using that
running play, and of course and he gets injured. And
Brian Schottennammer at his news conference ask any.
Speaker 2 (01:20:23):
Second guessing himself on using CD as a runner. No,
absolutely not.
Speaker 6 (01:20:27):
I mean, you know, you call passes and runs for
people and try to get on the ball, and it's unfortunate.
But we're gonna still, you know, call quarterback runs with
Dak at times and you hate to see it happen.
But no, no, uh no, second thoughts, All.
Speaker 1 (01:20:41):
Right, now we're gonna go to the defensive stuff, and
there's stuff obviously with the defense. Yeah, busts in coverage,
that's the thing for Cowboy fans.
Speaker 2 (01:20:51):
I think it just has to be maddening.
Speaker 1 (01:20:52):
You know why I say that because the team I
root who does the same thing, the Rams.
Speaker 2 (01:20:56):
They now, the Rams are better pass rush than.
Speaker 3 (01:20:58):
The Cowboys, right, which makes the busts worse when they
do have it, they're more noticeable.
Speaker 2 (01:21:02):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 3 (01:21:03):
So.
Speaker 2 (01:21:04):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:21:07):
Chotann Eimer was asked, what do you attribute these defensive
busts and coverage and gaps and big gash plays.
Speaker 2 (01:21:15):
What do you attribute that to? There's been multiple things.
Speaker 6 (01:21:18):
I think, you know, I say it all the time,
and you guys don't you know, I have to like
the answer, but it's the truth. It's different things. You know,
tray Von comes up on a third and eight. You know,
he's a little too tight on third and eight, needs
to play back. It comes up, goes for a quick
jam and his feet slip, so there's a touchdown.
Speaker 2 (01:21:38):
Very next play.
Speaker 6 (01:21:39):
They come out and when they have the ball and
they you know, have a good play call, risky play call.
They call the flea flicker, and you know, we got
to have a little bit better discipline with our eyes
when the two receivers kind of release down inside, like
you know, that's not.
Speaker 2 (01:21:52):
Who they crack.
Speaker 6 (01:21:53):
You know, they don't crack the deep post safety and
Mazie did a great job of really just you know,
knocking it back and the back's lobbing it back there.
And then Caleb makes, you know, really good play. You know,
we we we lose a vertical seam on a touchdown
right before the end of the first half. So it's
different things. And you know, defense is all about all
(01:22:14):
eleven guys.
Speaker 9 (01:22:15):
And.
Speaker 6 (01:22:17):
You know, you could go through each play of the
film and point out different things.
Speaker 2 (01:22:21):
And that's kind of what we talked about with our
guys during the team meeting.
Speaker 6 (01:22:23):
You know, I went through it and I said, you know,
at the end of the day, we did not offensively
have enough explosives. Give them credit, they kept a lid
on us. You know, I think we had six and
then we gave up six explosives for like two hundred
and fifteen yards.
Speaker 2 (01:22:36):
And we're not giving up you.
Speaker 6 (01:22:38):
Know, the league clarifies them as twelve yard runs are
explosives and sixteen yard pass are explosives. We're not giving
up sixteen, seventeen, eighteen yard explosives. We're giving up thirty
five and forty and forty five. And you know, at
the end of the day, that's not good enough.
Speaker 2 (01:22:52):
Man. And so had good meetings. We've talked through things,
We're changing up things. I'm not going to get into
what those things are.
Speaker 6 (01:23:03):
To improve it and make it better from the way
we meet, from the way we're game planning all that stuff.
But you know, the players, the players are not the
only ones that have to be better. I have to
be better. Flues has to be better, Clayton has to
be better. Nick has to be better for us to
go where we want to go. But that being said,
we're three games into this season and there's a lot
(01:23:26):
of football left to be played.
Speaker 1 (01:23:27):
All right, he earned him said flu So obviously he's
talking about Matt Eberflus, and he was asking if the
players on the defensive side bought into eber Flus's defensive scheme.
Speaker 6 (01:23:38):
Yeah, I don't have any reason why not. I think
when you're not playing well, it's going to always be doubts.
And that's the other thing I said to the guys today.
I really told them two things.
Speaker 2 (01:23:46):
I said.
Speaker 6 (01:23:46):
Number One, today is all about us. Let's focus on us.
Let's go through these meetings. I talked about the things
I messed up in the game. There's certainly things I
messed up in the game, and I was open about that.
Speaker 2 (01:23:58):
I said, you.
Speaker 6 (01:23:58):
Guys have to do the same thing, accountability for the
things you did. One thing I'll say for Trayvon that
was really powerful for me to see is immediately after
the long touchdown pass, he was like, Hey, that's on me,
you know, And that's progress man. So again, confidence in
this league is interesting because it comes and goes fast
when you're playing in such a competitive league. And I
(01:24:20):
don't think it will take long for us to get
the confidence back. But I would understand why guys might
be like, what about this?
Speaker 2 (01:24:26):
What about that?
Speaker 6 (01:24:27):
But now I have complete trust in what we're doing
from a scheme standpoint, we'll look at maybe making some changes.
Speaker 2 (01:24:34):
We will make some changes.
Speaker 6 (01:24:36):
But in terms of the players, I think that they
bought into what we're trying to do as a football
team and we just got to execute better.
Speaker 1 (01:24:43):
Yeah, okay, So what gives him confidence that this defense
can turn it around?
Speaker 2 (01:24:48):
I would say it.
Speaker 6 (01:24:48):
Starts with the leadership that we have on this football team.
You know, guys like Donovan Wilson, guys like Osa, guys
like Malie Cooker. You know, they're rightful guys, man, and uh,
they realize that we can't be giving up explosive plays.
We have to be better on third down. You know,
we're just we're not getting off the field on third down.
(01:25:08):
I think we're lasting the league on third down. So
we'll take a hard look at that. You know, I
think we're giving up something like fifty five percent or
something on third down, and it's actually, you know, I
think we're middle of the.
Speaker 2 (01:25:19):
Pack and what that third down D and D is.
Speaker 6 (01:25:22):
It's like third and seven point two or Something's what
the average is. But we're giving up like nine point
two yards on third down, and that along with.
Speaker 2 (01:25:32):
The explosives are are are hurting us.
Speaker 6 (01:25:34):
And again I understand why teams don't want to try
to run the ball against us. You know, I wouldn't
run the ball against our defense. We're playing the run
really well. I'd just ling it all over the place.
And that's unfortunately what we're allowing to happen. And you know,
until we do something about it, it's what we're going
to see for the next.
Speaker 2 (01:25:51):
Couple of weeks.
Speaker 1 (01:25:52):
Okay, So how about the other side now, because his
offense is going to see this Green Bay d fens
with Micah Parsons now playing, he was asked to evaluate
this pass rush of.
Speaker 2 (01:26:08):
The Packers and how they have to deal with it.
Speaker 10 (01:26:11):
You know, with Michael Parsons coming to town this week,
how much do you boose comes out? How Michah Parsons,
how much do you.
Speaker 2 (01:26:18):
Replace for Green Bay? What he plays for Green Bay?
He does o good.
Speaker 10 (01:26:23):
How much do you reflect on kind of that decision,
which both of you and Terry Johns said was unanimous
given quarterback pressure and the explosive stuff issues.
Speaker 2 (01:26:33):
That you mentioned.
Speaker 6 (01:26:34):
Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, like I said,
the defenses, it's all tied together, and are we getting
enough pressure on the quarterback?
Speaker 9 (01:26:40):
No?
Speaker 6 (01:26:41):
You know, I mean when you look at it, we
can do better. Come out of that game with no
sacks is not good enough. Again, there's things that we
can do, and there's you know, from a scheme standpoint,
but certainly a coverage's best friend is the pass rush.
And again I think you know, there's been highs of
(01:27:01):
where we've rushed it pretty well and it's been good,
and then there's been times where the pass rush hasn't
been there, and so we're looking at that. You know,
one of the things we're doing is a little early
self scout, you know, and say, Okay, what do we
do well? And the things that we do well, you'll
see us probably do more of, and the things that
we don't.
Speaker 2 (01:27:19):
Do well, you'll see us do less of. But this
is a.
Speaker 6 (01:27:24):
Team game, and certainly on defense, it takes all eleven
to affect the quarterback coverage and pass rushing.
Speaker 1 (01:27:30):
Here it is sound from Shoddy talking about what they're
gonna have to deal with Sunday night, Cowboys Packers.
Speaker 2 (01:27:38):
You'll hear it on ninety eight point one FMK.
Speaker 1 (01:27:40):
Bet you will hear the Texans game here on the
zone Sunday eleven thirty or time. And the kickoff is
that coming up. We're gonna hear from the head coach
of the zero to three Houston Texans, Demiko Riots when
we continue on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred zone of
the radio app Springo Star is not from the state
(01:28:01):
of Texas. He's from Liverpool. But Jake is bumping back
with that because I'm going to be seeing Ringo Star
on Saturday night in Las Vegas, finishing out his residency
at the Venetian, so let it. I'll be out there
on Saturday. I'm going to be out the rest of
the week starting to morrow. Took three days off here.
(01:28:22):
I've also speaking at my alma water in North Texas
tomorrow and nights with that and a couple other Metroplex
related duties.
Speaker 3 (01:28:33):
Tomorrow and Buck Owens, native of Sherman, Texas, Yes, originally
wrote that song.
Speaker 1 (01:28:38):
Yes absolutely and if the truth were known. I kind
of like his version better than ringos.
Speaker 3 (01:28:44):
I'm with you, I do, but I had to throw
a little ringo in.
Speaker 2 (01:28:47):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 1 (01:28:49):
And buck Owens was from Grayson County, you're right, from Sherman, Texas.
Speaker 9 (01:28:54):
He was.
Speaker 1 (01:28:55):
You know, those are two guys, buck Owens and Roy Clark,
who are best known, unfortunately you might some might say
for what they did on He Haul all those years
that show that was on CBS and then went into
the syndication for decades. But they were really good musicians,
outstanding guitarists, buck Owens and Roy Clark.
Speaker 2 (01:29:16):
And buck Owins was a songwriter as well.
Speaker 3 (01:29:18):
Like, yeah, naturally should have thrown a little big in
Vegas here for you.
Speaker 2 (01:29:22):
Yeah, that would have worked. All right.
Speaker 1 (01:29:24):
Let's hear from Demico Ryans. Last hour, we played a
SoundBite from the Texans coach where he was asking what
did he mean by the team being close to getting wins,
which is what he set at for the game on
Sunday when they lost the Titans, and he talked about
how they're just missing here or there, but in the neighborhood.
So the follow up was is being close encouraging for him?
Speaker 8 (01:29:48):
It's not encouraging it being close. We want to win games.
It's not about being closed. Just that's just stay in
the facts. I stayed in the obviously of how the
three games have played out, where how those games have
happened for us. But we're not here to just be close.
We here to win the football game. Yeah, I mean
they've been close. They have been close, and all three
could have if I should have won all three.
Speaker 1 (01:30:11):
Of those, but they didn't. They were all win three.
So he was asked, would they by being three? And oh,
would wins? And those games have masked some of the
issues that the guy in the sky the film was discovered.
Speaker 8 (01:30:25):
Oh, we go back, no matter when or lost, we
go back and we we dissect the film.
Speaker 7 (01:30:30):
Right, so see issues whether you win or you lose.
Speaker 8 (01:30:34):
To me, you attack the film the same way every
single time, and you attacking to see first and foremost, how.
Speaker 7 (01:30:41):
Can we be better?
Speaker 8 (01:30:42):
Right, no matter what the outcome of the result of
the game is, how do you get better? That's what
the That's what it's about. A long season, It's about
how do you grow? How do you get better each
and every week? And so that's what we'll that's what
we'll do every time.
Speaker 1 (01:30:57):
All right, stop me if this sounds familiar. You heard
Brian john E were talking about communication issues with his defense,
especially in the back four of it in the secondary,
and Ryan's was asked if there are issues there and
that stuff they're having to deal with.
Speaker 8 (01:31:15):
Yeah, when you see a big play that happens on
our defense, somewhere along the lines, there's a bust in communication.
It all starts at communication and it hasn't been as
crisp as it needs to be. So we have to
play better on the defensive side. We got to communicate
better and we got to execute the defense better. And
(01:31:35):
so yep, we' is not being great. We see that
we have to make some adjustments there to make sure
we get it corrected.
Speaker 2 (01:31:44):
So clearly with a No.
Speaker 1 (01:31:45):
One three start, his team is facing adversity and can
they get over the adversity you.
Speaker 2 (01:31:55):
Know, last year versus this year. The difference on that
and trying to do it again this year.
Speaker 8 (01:31:58):
For me right now, with our team, like when you
go through different each team, like no matter what year,
it is like each team has its own face with
its own adversity and different issues that arise. So for me,
as the head coaches a matter of o. Heay, different
set of problems, different set of challenges, and I'm up
for it, Like that's why I'm here. Like that's how
(01:32:21):
we attack it. We'll get it all corrected, don't. I
don't compare year to year for me. I said, this
is a different year twenty twenty three, completely different team,
twenty twenty four, completely different team. We're here, we have
different issues here in twenty twenty five, but we go
we attack it the right way, we attack it with
the right attitude, and we're gonna get this thing, get
(01:32:44):
the thing rolling in the right direction.
Speaker 1 (01:32:47):
It is usually a statement of fact that when a
team starts off with the difficulties like the Texans have
encountered and sport the record like the Texans have right
now at three, there's a concern on the part of
coaches and really even veteran teammates about the young guys
(01:33:08):
and you know, the tendency to not be as motivated
or require more stimulation to be motivated. And so he
was asked about, you know what it takes to make
sure the younger guys are staying motivated even as they
try to fight through these issues of one game at
a time.
Speaker 7 (01:33:27):
Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 8 (01:33:29):
You keep guys motivated by understanding storms are going to
hit you in life, like whether it's you know, we
do football, but also in real light like storms will arise,
storms will come in your life. It's like when you
go through the storm, are you coming out stronger or
are you getting ripped apart.
Speaker 7 (01:33:48):
By the storm?
Speaker 3 (01:33:49):
Right?
Speaker 7 (01:33:49):
And so there are different people who can handle those.
Speaker 8 (01:33:51):
At the adversity in the storm that comes, it's like
how do you handle it? You got to remain resilient.
You got to remain strong through it. And it really
test your character to see who are you?
Speaker 7 (01:34:02):
Who are you?
Speaker 8 (01:34:03):
Truly as as a player, as a as a man,
like how are you? Who are you? And we'll see that.
I will see how we handle this as individuals. We'll
see how we handle this as a team.
Speaker 1 (01:34:16):
There was one other point that needed some clarification. Sideline
television shots in the game last Sunday showed Ryan's really
animated and getting into it, and there were coaches around
there and folks were wondering if this was a moment
where he was losing his temper at some of the
coaches for things not going the way that he wanted.
Speaker 3 (01:34:37):
Him to go, yeah, particularly Nick Keley, they're new OC.
Speaker 1 (01:34:40):
Yeah, And he said that was not the case at all.
Speaker 2 (01:34:44):
It wasn't what it appeared to be hoping from our
urgency from the offense at that moment or what was frustrated?
Speaker 7 (01:34:50):
Who says I was urging the offense?
Speaker 2 (01:34:52):
You were doing this and what does.
Speaker 8 (01:34:55):
That mean just because I'm doing this? That doesn't And
there are some people saw your the words coming out
of your mouth, but I wanted to ask you and no,
whenever you saw me, if you guys saw me animated
on the field, that was directed. I think during that
snap we got on the ball, we went tempo, and
(01:35:15):
the refs held up held our offense from continuing to
run their play, and the ref said that we were substituting,
which we were not substituting. No one on our sideline
got off the sideline or moved, and so they didn't
They didn't allow us to run our Temple offense. They
held they hailed the huddle. So that's who I was
talking to the official right and making sure that we
(01:35:38):
were able to run our offense the proper way.
Speaker 2 (01:35:40):
You weren't yelling at NI correctly.
Speaker 8 (01:35:42):
I just said I was talking to the official No,
I was not yelling at any anybody on our sideline,
any coaches, any players.
Speaker 7 (01:35:55):
I'm too cool for that.
Speaker 1 (01:35:58):
