It's the Craig Way Show with thevoice of the Texas Longhorns and Hall of
Fame broadcaster Craig Way. All Right, you just heard the man with a
gruff voice talk about the iHeartRadio appAnd it's been really cool in that you
can listen to all kinds of programmingand podcasts and things like that, and
(00:25):
listening to this program this radio stationon it, but even more added emphasis
this week and next week because aswe pointed out, we're giving away copies.
We're doing ten per day giving awaycopies of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine.
But unlike prior years, and thisgoes all the way back to nineteen
(00:45):
ninety eight, when the immortal DaveCampbell himself came to our radio station one
time. We were sitting outside ofa Randalls in ninety eight, Bill Shooning
and Dave Campbell and I and hewas personally signing copies and now we were
shaded, but still it was aone hundred degrees outside it was this time
of year signing copies of that.So we've been giving away copies of the
(01:07):
magazine on this station. When Iwas across town in the back of the
station thanks to the great folks atDCTF every year and we've been giving away
copies for twenty five years. Butthe way we're doing it differently now is
that we're using our talk back feature. And like we said, it's really
easy. You just access it theiHeartRadio app. If you don't have the
(01:30):
app, it's free, just downloadit on your iPhone or your Android whatever.
You'll go to AM thirteen under thezone. You'll see a little red
button on there that has a whitemicrophone. You just push that button.
You'll leave us fifteen twenty twenty fiveseconds. A message will go over thirty
it'll cut you off, So fifteento twenty twenty five seconds on what you
look forward to seeing and reading themost out of this magazine. And in
(01:55):
the first three days we've got aton of responses, and safe to say,
what would you say? The vastmajority, Cameron, of the responses
are from folks on what they lookforward to most out of this magazine.
I think the cover has been thefirst thing I've heard a lot of is
the cover. I've heard the cover, but I think it's second. I
(02:15):
think it's the high school section becausewe have we've had Remember, we had
one guy con that said that helooked forward to the El Paso schools,
and somebody else talked about his son. It's close. But anyway, a
lot of people and the guy couldtell us exactly how many pages out of
the four hundred were devoted to thehigh school cover joints us right down on
the hotline. That's Greg Chappard, the managing editor of Dave Campbell's Texas Football
(02:38):
magazine. How many pages out ofthe four hundred specifically are devoted to high
school football in Texas? Geez,I want to say it's probably about one
hundred and ninety six or so,and that all kind of depends on how
you classify things like recruiting, youknow, because recruiting is obviously kind of
(02:58):
half in half out as well.Yeah, I'm comfortable saying about about one
hundred and around two hundred plus orminus two hundred. Half the magazine is
is is high school And that,by the way, doesn't even count things
like the index or things like that. So yeah, let's say two hundred.
Yeah, Yeah, that's what I'vebeen saying all along. I said,
it's basically half the magazine on that. And so we first talked about
(03:23):
it getting ready to go out andrelease a couple of weeks ago. So
now I understand it is out inrelease, what in various supermarkets and Walmart
and Barts and all places places likethat. Correct? Yeah, I would
say this is tougher to say nowin twenty twenty four than it wasn't beast.
But wherever you buy your magazines iswhere you can get it. So
usually grocery stores, you know, and Walmart and stuff like that. In
(03:45):
bookstores are probably going to be yourbest bet. And obviously if they subscribe
online at Texas Football dot Com,they're going to get to copy that way.
That's way to plus all the othergreat great content that you guys do.
Okay, so you just got Whendid you get back from coaching school?
Was he? Yes? For todaywas a Tuesday night? When did
you get back from coaching school?I got back from coaching school on Tuesday
night, made the drive back throughwhat was some some tough weather in traffic.
(04:09):
It ended up taking a long timeto get back up here, and
not I didn't sleep well at coachingschool. And then we made the very
greg powers of recruiting enlist and Imade a very tough mistake of stopping in
Lockhart and eating barbecue there, whichI gotta be honest, about an hour
later, I was like, Buddy, I might need to pull over and
take a nap. Yeah, itwould It would do that. A great,
(04:30):
great barbecue in the cat barbecue capitalof Texas. Okay. In the
takeaways from Coaching School, you guyswere really busy in the exhibit area.
What and then is whatever? Eighteenthousand coaches overall took part in this one
this year. Yeah, eighteen thousand. It was a record number of coaches
there at phsca coaching school, andit was you know, one of the
(04:55):
things that we always enjoy go,you know, talk with these coaches and
picking their brains and getting their feelyou know, getting some inside information,
getting some little nuggets here and thereabout teams. But the other things that
we really look forward to are hearingfrom the THC themselves. And then the
U I L U I L basicallygets one press conference a year and it's
a coaching school, and so it'san opportunity. You know, they're our
friends of the U I L.Are very good. If we have questions,
(05:15):
they'll answer them. But like asfar as in a press conference setting.
Those are the types of things thatwe really look forward to from a
news gathering perspective. So those arethose are the things that we really look
forward to, Okay. Uh.And then and then you're the group and
doing it also through checks and lives. Uh. Your crew interviewed a truckload
(05:38):
of coaches, right. I meanevery time I turned around when I saw
either there or in the upstairs interviewroom, either you or Matt stept or
Ashley Pickle or Aaron Hartigan. Imean, you guys were interviewing a ton
of coaches. Get what we'll see? Some preview stuff, yeah, a
lot of season previous stuff, alot a lot of stuff for features down
the road. It's it's a greatopportunity to just gather content, you know
(05:58):
what I mean. It's it's evenif there's no news that's broken during the
course of coaching school, just anopportunity to get all these coaches all on
the same place and they're also thinkingabout football. You know, we don't
you know, I probably don't haveto tell your listeners that we are careening
towards football season very very very soon. We're basically a monk out and so
these guys, they're they're anxious totalk about it. They want to tell
you about their coach, their teams, and we want to listen. Not
(06:19):
only in recorded settings. Those aregreat to get these interviews and get them
on the record, but also injust like the you know, the background
conversation of them saying, hey,we've got this running back that's really broken
out for us in the off season. Those types of things are going to
be super helpful for us moving forwardonce it on's football season. Also,
all right, visiting with Greg Tepper, managing editor Dad campbells Texas Football Magazine
(06:41):
right now. You mentioned about breakingnews. You told me about this the
other night, and it's on thewebsite of Texas Football dot com. Here's
the guy we've been talking about forthe past three years, Grayson Rigden,
who has rewritten some record books atthe six man level. He has never
ever, ever lost to high schoolfootball game. And now he's going to
(07:02):
step up to eleven man ball. How about that? Yes, he's gonna
he's he's transferring to Columbus down SoutheastTexas way. Uh. They Columbus has
hired his dad, Jamie Rigson,to be an assistant coach Uh. There,
So he's going to be He's goingto be joining the would be number
two ranked team in three A Divisionone, which already has you know,
a certified a couple of certified studs, including their quarterback Adam Shoble, who
(07:26):
is I believe him at Oklahoma State. So this is a big time get
for them, uh as far asGrace and Ringan's concerned. And it is
also, in my opinion now perhapsthe most fascinating story in Texas high school
football because here's a guy and Graysonand Rigdon who could like claim at the
very least to being on the Mountrushmore of all time six man football players.
There are people who are going totell you about Dwayne Miles, or
(07:47):
people are going to tell you abouta variety of other places, you know,
Tyler Etherage, great players in thecourse of the course of six man
football history in Texas. Grason Riggsis on that shortlist right and now he
will step up and play at thethree A level and we will see you
know how much he you know, and how much that translates that there is
no doubting his dominance of the sixman level. And for years and years
(08:11):
we've heard from six man folks whoare saying, hey, these guys are
certified bona fide, you know, football stars, and I agree with him,
they absolutely are. But what doesthat look like the eleven man level?
And so now I'm very interested tosee what that looks like, because
I don't think anybody knows. Ithink he could go out there and be
an all state guy and be oneof the most dynamic playmakers in all three
(08:31):
A football and it wouldn't surprise me. He could also go there and be,
you know, a nice piece ofa of a state championship contender and
be like a second team All districttype player, and it wouldn't surprise me
there either. So it's a fascinatingstory just because we don't have a ton
of well, I'll say this,we definitely don't have a player of his
(08:52):
caliber at the six man level makingthe lead to eleven man. We've seen
six man players move to eleven manbefore, but they're not as are as
guys who are the most the undisputed, one of the greatest players ever.
That's what's going to make his storyin twenty twenty four and the story of
Columbus now so fascinating and by theway, we will know right out of
a shoot because they will do aquero, so you want to talk about
(09:15):
right into the fire. We willknow exactly how much Grace and Rigden matches
up at the eleven man level becausethey will get a test right out of
gates. In a couple of weekswhen we preview three A, we'll have
some more conversation on that. Aswe visited Greg Tepper a couple of weeks
ago, we pretty much had alittle bit of a six A preview.
And the best way to describe sixA preview, I said, is the
(09:35):
more things change, the more theyremain the same. Desta Doctor Jill or
the schools in this area, wouldyou not agree? Also with regard to
your rankings, would probably be Westlake, Lake Travis, Vandergrif, Dripping Springs.
They would be the ones, themost likely ones to have a shot
to go deep in the playoffs andmaybe even have a shot at a state
(09:56):
championship game appearance. Yeah, Ithink we take a look at the Austin
area, a lot of a lotof saying, you know, Lake Travis,
Lake Travis, west Lake, DrippingSprings, you know Vandergriffs. I
would throw if you're looking for somevariety. I am. I am in
on the McNeil bandwagon. I'm in. I think that rend Rock McNeil has
an opportunity to really make some noise. You know, those are the teams
that I think are on that shortlistof contenders there in the Austin area,
(10:16):
which you know, basically outside ofMcNeil is could be classified as the usual
suspects, right all right, nowto five. I wanted to get your
thoughts at now, is it fairto say that, at least on some
level, it's a mirror image oflast year Alito the favorite in Division one
and a defending state champion PNG Portnach'sgrows in Division two? Yeah, I
(10:39):
think so. I think from theoutset, you know, you could certainly
look at that. But the questionfor me is going to be, Okay,
just how big is that gap betweennumber one and let's just say I
was number two, but then furthermorelike number six, right and and in
division one you know Alito has beenyou know, look, they they've won
eleven titles in fifteen years. There'sno dispute. The greatest they have been
(11:01):
absolutely outrageous, you know, inthe past decade and a half. They
have some major questions coming into theyear, most notably a quarterback costs any
is off the TCU. They loseactually a fair amount. I believe they
only bring back seven starters from lastyear's team. I mean, they graduate
really heavy. And so the questionis, is there anybody in five A
(11:22):
Division one, a det and Ryan, a Highland Park back to five A,
A College Station, a Smithson Valley, you know, a Richland and
Abilene, maybe a Flugerville wife thatcan challenge them? That's the question.
And then in five A Division two, I think that you are well within
your rights to call Port and AgesGrows in South Oak Cliff a coin flip.
We gave the benefit of the doubtsof the defending state chance. We
(11:45):
think they've earned that. But Ithink that has a coin flip. And
you add in the intrigue that nowthey're going to be in the same region
over there in Region two. Thatis fascinating. And then is there a
team from outside of Region two,be it an Argyle or be it an
Alamo Heights, be it a Collegevilleto Richmond Randall, a Liberty Hill that
can challenge them? That is thequestion is again, yeah, at the
(12:05):
very top. You see this inthe usual suspects. But my question is
how big is that gap? AndI would make the argument to you that
it is not as big of agap as it has been in past years
in Region two, in Region three, in five a D one safe to
say we're talking about Weiss and CedarPark being the best out of the Greater
(12:26):
Austin area. Yeah, I thinkabsolutely. And you look at a team
like Flugerville Wiss, I'm very, very interested in seeing what they do this
year because I think that the droppingdown you know, I think one of
the really underrated storylines here is thatyou've got a six A playoff team,
a nine win playoff team that isdropping down a classification, and by the
(12:48):
way, they're bringing with them fourteenstarters. They're bringing back a fair amount
from last year's ball club. I'mvery intrigued. I'm buying in on what
wife is selling really And then yeah, Cedar Park is a team that you
know, perennial contender, and theyare one of those teams that every year
on paper, then numbers are goingto look kind of ugly because they usually
are pretty senior heavy as far asthe starters are concerned, So like bringing
(13:09):
back nine starters back from last yearis not going to allow anybody. But
that's kind even that's kind of theCedar Park way. They are usually very
senior heavy, so I don't puta ton of You got to know how
to read between the lines here, and I think you take a look at
what they bring back. I thinkthey feel really good about the senior class
that's coming up. If they canfill in some holes on the offensive line,
(13:30):
I think they're right back in thatmix. You know, it is
Cedar Park So so I look atthem as far as Region two is concerned.
You know, yeah, they're gonnahave to deal with teams like Highland
Park, They're gonna have to dealwith teams like Prisco lone Star. But
I think they are probably as faras the as far as the Austin area
is concerned, they're the teams tobeat their in their respected regions. Yeah.
I think that's what fascinated to bethe most. The fact that you
guess a Greater Austin team matching upwith Metroplex in round two of five eight
(13:54):
Division one and in five eighty two, what Liberty Hill maybe once again kind
of one of the ones to be, if not the one to beat out
of the area. Yeah. Iwould say in the Austin area, Liberty
Hill is probably the the the bellcow there in five A Division two,
and their realignment fate was so strangein that they get moved over to Region
(14:15):
three, which should be causing alarmbells. But then obviously portin Acis grows
leading Region three kind of opens thingsup a little bit. Now. I
don't think it's going to be acakewalk. I think that Richmond Randall is
a team you need to be payingattention to. They are ready to roll.
They have one of the very bestyoung running backs in America in Landon
Williams Callas. They are for real. And then you add an a team
(14:37):
like four Bend Marshall Alvin, IowaColony, who is moving up from four
A. They're a team that that'sgoing to be really good there in Regent
in Region three. So I wouldsay that you look at Livery Hill,
I think that from a district perspective, probably got a better draw. But
I think that when you zoom outand look at Region three, they are
going to be three teams all fromthe Houston area that I think are going
to give them challenges, you know, and again Let's Hills another team that
(15:01):
again you got to you gotta knowwhat you're looking at. Nine starters back
on from from last year's team.Yeah, that's that's part for the course.
I want to say last year theyhad like four starters back and look
all they made all the way toa state semifinal. So I look at
a team like rich but like LibertyHill as far as Kerry and the banner
there in the Austin area at fiveeighty two is Michael Terry from Alamo Heights,
the best player in five eight Yourun through my uh yeah, I
(15:24):
mean he's he's a short lister guys. I mean, I might look at
a guy like Tradarian Ball at TexasHigh Racing, Guillory and Alito. I'm
just kind of trying to run through, but I mean he's on that very
short Jonah Williams of Galveston Ball.I look at a guy like Dianda Williams
there, the the outstanding quarterback fromAnna. Remember they're moving up to five
(15:48):
A Division two. He's on thatshortleys but but look, he is worth
the price of admission. I mean, if you have never seen Michael Terry.
You and I got were we're luckyenough to call his actually his his
last game last year when they lostto San Antonio Piper and I remember you
and I in the lead up,we're watching some tape and then we watch
him on the field. On thefield, You're like, oh, yeah,
you're You're different, You're a differentkind of cat. Michael Terry is
the real stinking deal, no doubtabout it. All right. He's Greg
(16:11):
Tepper, managing enter Dave Campbell's TexasFootball magazine. Check out that not not
only the outstanding work in the magazine, and then we're giving away some of
those copies of that, but alsoonline where you can subscribe to Texas Football

(16:32):
