Speaker 1 (00:00):
Greg Tepper is the managing editor Dave Campill's Texas Football magazine,
co host of High School Scoreboard Live along with Aaron
Hartigan And when I don't have a football or basketball
conflict myself as well. Tep does not have red hair,
but he does have plenty of hair. And would you
have bet the hair on your head that Rice was

(00:21):
going to hire Scott. I guess it's Abel to replace
Mike Bloomberm as the head coach of the Owls coming
in from Davidson.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Uh No, I would not have. I would not have
bet the hair on my head. That is. It's a
bit of a stunner. You know, we have been tracking
the story. Mike Craven had had sources saying that he
believes that what was most likely was the was that
Yale's coach was going to be headed that way specifically.

(00:50):
You know there's a guy who has led them to
three ivy leaes called Tony Reno is his name, that
he was the favorite and then they zig when they's
at when they said they were gonna zagh. You know,
this is a really interesting high up skate. Scott Abel
is a bit of an He's a bit of a
football wonk Darling in the sense of he runs essentially

(01:12):
like the pistol triple option, and they run the stinking ball.
It is an old school style of offense. I believe
they are second in FCS in rushing yards this past year,
and he's been a winner there at Davidson. It is
certainly off the beaten path for Rice. You know, when
they when they hired Mike Bloomgren, he was a bit

(01:32):
of a known commodity there at Stanford, is the offensive
coordinator there at Stanford. Uh, this is definitely an off
the board choice. He has no ties to the state
of Texas that we know of. I'm sure he's visited,
but that's about it. Uh. And so that will be
an uphill climb there for Rice as far as as
far as they're concerned, but as far as the product
on the field, there's no doubt that he's won wherever

(01:55):
he's gone, and he has an identity, and they're gonna
they're gonna run the dang ball. And I would imagine
that's what we'll see.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
I start doing well.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
And I can tell you having grown up in the
state of North Carolina, and I had a couple of
friends get into Davidson College. Davidson is a lot like Rice,
about three thousand students and a high academic school. So
maybe he's used to, you know, being able to recruit
to that. Certainly did it at the FCS level. Now
the D one level. Now I got to ask you this,
what is a better story in college football in the

(02:24):
state of Texas this week? And we're removing Texas and
Texas A and M from the equation. Okay, so we're
just pulling that out. What is a better story SMU
having already clinched an ACC championship game, birth can creep
closer toward a college football playoff if they handle their
business against col or the fact that you've got Hard

(02:46):
and Simmons getting ready to play Mary Harden Baylor for
the third time this year.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
Third, yeah time this year.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
I would need to check the last time that you
had teams play each other three times in a season.
I guess theoretically, like there's an opportunity now that, like
some of these conferences have gone away from divisions. Do
you play each other in stute, you know, in the season,
and then you could play each other again in the

(03:15):
conference championship game, and then you could play each other
again in a playoff, but a three three matches is
very rare, and especially a three match between what can
only be described as hated rivals. If you don't know this,
Mary Aarn Baylor and Hard and Simmons don't like each other.
And it is I mean, and and for Hard and Simmons,
they've been they've been real dang tied to hearing about
Mary Hard and Baylor, and they've been off winning national

(03:36):
championships and they feel like this is their time. So
with all due respect to S and U, I feel
like the I feel like for the the S and
U story, this is the chapter before the chapter when
they play in the a SEC Championship game that of
course will be will be a game to behold because
they can clinch an automatic birth to the college football playoffs.
So with all due respect to the Ponies, I'm going

(03:57):
to wait a week before I put them in the
spotlight because this week it is all about the third
meeting between Mary Hard and by An Hard and Simon.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
That's amazing.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
And again for folks who didn't know, and we've talked
about Hard and Simmons, what a big year they're having.
Kyle Brown their quarterback, Vistaadge product, and of course his
dad was the offensive coordinator there is now the offensive
coordinator at Maynor.

Speaker 3 (04:17):
But yeah, that's uh, that's a that's a big thing there.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Okay, Uh, what's what's the buzz in the office about that?

Speaker 3 (04:25):
That game over in the Brasses Valley? Uh?

Speaker 1 (04:27):
On, And and let's let's not kid ourselves, tap, let's
not kit ourselves as big as Texas Texas A and
M is this week. If we get a quarterfinal between
A and M consolidated and college station in a rematch
next week.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
I'm just saying, you know.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
I thought that maybe the game, you know, I didn't
know if there was a high school maybe like the
Franklin game was what you're referring to. But no, look,
A and M in Texas is Uh, it is what
we expected it to be. It's it's a big game. Uh,
it is a I don't I know what. Let me
put this one. I think everybody it is not a
hot take at the beginning of the season to say, boy,

(05:07):
Texas and Texas A and M is a big game.
Of course it is. But I do think that it
is a surprise the stakes that are at play here
specifically because I think Texas, let's say they've played to
their paper, They've played to their expectation, and I would
say that A and M for the most part has
perhaps slightly exceeded expectations. The first year of Mike Elco

(05:27):
certainly looked or at the very least, the SEC is
such a such a mess that A and M being
in a win and in situation for the college for
for you know, they control their own destiny for the
college football Playoff at this point in time is certainly,
I think a surprise. I think this game is obviously

(05:48):
box office for all the reasons that I don't need
to tell Texas and A and M fans about. The
thing that I think is most interesting in this matchup
is going to be the not just the scene, but
who is able to handle seeing the most. I think
what's really interesting is is throughout the course of the
week you've heard from players and journalists like us have
gotten up there and said, well, what does this game

(06:08):
mean to you? And a lot of them have simply said, like,
you know, I didn't grow up with this game. You know,
it's been dormant for them for the large part of
my football consciousness. So I know we're supposed to beat them,
but I'm not sure exactly what that means. I think
that'll change once they got on the field, and once
these two I think all I think all it's going
to take is about one quarter of play and everyone's
going to remember why why these two teams don't like

(06:29):
each other. That'll be really interesting to see how that blossoms,
because I think for a lot of these players, it
really is just another game. But I think that's going
to change once the once the atmosphere and the weight
of the game really start to take hold, probably about
fifteen minutes in.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
Yeah, the things that I hear from the players are
similar to what the things you hear, like say. I'll
just use this as an example of Texas where to
play Baylor or TCU or Texas Tech.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
And here's what I mean by this.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Jade Baron yesterday, the FOURPE Reward finalists and a captain
and all this stuff. He said, and they were asking
him about you know, because it's could be his first
time playing against A and M, and he said. I
joked with him, I said, uh, you've been here long eno,
because he's a six year senior or a joke with
him the other day on the post game. He said,
you just barely missed it the last time. But I said, uh,

(07:18):
somebody asked him about this and how much and the
rivalry and this and that, and his response was to say, yeah,
I got some friends who play at A and M,
so I know.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
Some guys over there.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
I mean, that's that's what we hear him say about
Baylor or TC were tech same.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Thing, absolutely, absolutely, in the same way. It's like, oh yeah,
like the guy that I played against in high school
and and and he was he was the third ranked
cornerback and I was the fourth ranth cornerback in the class.
Like those are the guys That's why I want to
go out there and beat But that's the same way
when when you're going to play in Alabama, that's the
same way when you're going to play you know you're
going to play that. So that's what's going to be
interesting is to see what this new generation feels like

(07:55):
about this rivalry, which which does exist in a different uh,
it's a different you know atmosphere, is a different kind
of zeitgeist of college football as far as like you know,
these games, like the sport's much more nationalized. I think
that what Nate tex is in A and M so
special in the yesteryear was that college Well that was
in the age when college football is much more regionalized.

(08:16):
Now you know, you're you know, and I'm playing conference
games against South Carolina. It's a different ballgame, and I'm
interested to see how much this this rivalry really takes hold, no.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
Doubt about it.

Speaker 1 (08:26):
Visiting mcgreg tepper managing editor Dave Campbell, Texas Football Magazine.
Here in the prayer, Okay, let's jump to high school.
I'm going to do something difference with you this time
because we're down to the sweet sixteen in all the
eleven man brackets and to an elite eight in the
six man So what I'm going to do is, because
this is very convenient, I can go region by region

(08:47):
where there are two games and ask you which game
has you has your attention as more of your attention
which one does. For example, six A Division one Region one,
you got uh, North Crowley against Coppel. Of course that's
your alma maters, so that's probably an unfair question. Uh

(09:07):
and then and then uh and and they're playing in
Mansfield on Saturday Friday late Friday afternoon, Ulish Trinity and
Allen they're playing in South Lake, which one kind of
sticks out to you more.

Speaker 2 (09:18):
I think it has to be the battle of unbeatens
North Crowley and Copel. Certainly, that's that's I think going
to be the big game. I will say that, you know,
Allan and Yulis Trinity does feel like a throwback to
about ten years ago of like these two programs back
in a major spot, and this Trinity team's played really well.
They're kind of vintage Trinity. It's probably the two teams
that like like they're they're the most back, uh you know,

(09:42):
they're the they are kind of the the revenge of
the Old Guard. So that game is interesting. But I
think North Crawley Copel's the play here.

Speaker 3 (09:48):
Okay, all right, Region two Duncanville in the Woodlands.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
For folks who might be looking for a good game
Saturday afternoons in Huddo.

Speaker 3 (09:54):
At one o'clock, you have that one and then and
then if.

Speaker 1 (09:58):
You're looking for a good game in the area, like said,
Waksahatchie and Bridgeland are playing at the field in Flugerville
on Saturday, so you got two in the area for
Region two.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
Which one stands out more to you?

Speaker 2 (10:10):
Yeah, it's it's Bridgeland and Waksahatchie simply because I think
I think, I think Duncanville is a pretty clear favorite
over the Woodlands, and I think that this Bridgeland Walks
Hatchy game has an opportunity to be more of the
most evenly matched games of the week. I love the
Walks of Hatchie passing attack. This Bridgeland team has survived
big blow after big blow from teams. They've taken their

(10:31):
best punch. I like this game a lot. I think
that that's and I think it has to be more competitive,
probably than the Duncanville who feel like they're steamrolling people
at the moment.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Yeah, speaking of clear favorites, Region three one that to
use your term would be box office, Katie and north
Shore at the computer likes north Shore by seventeen and
then you got full sure and a task seat in
the computer likes a Task con seeded by thirteen.

Speaker 3 (10:56):
What do you think you can make of those twos?

Speaker 2 (10:59):
So Katie and north to play here? I mean, these
are the d two high school football programs of record
in Houston, and they do it in such different ways.
It's strange to remember they haven't played in the playoffs
since twenty nineteen. It's been a minute since because a
lot of Katie's just gone D two a lot. But
this is a fabulous, fabulous ball game, great stylistic clash.

(11:21):
Can the Katie defense keep a lid on North Shore?
And for how long can the running game get going?
It's at NRG. There's gonna be twenty thousand people there.
It's gonna be a fantastic game. But don't overlook at
that bullshyear at task to the game a task Casita
has had two kind of dicey calls the first two
weeks of the year of the playoffs, and fullisher is

(11:42):
good enough to beat them if they if they go
out there and they play with their food. If I'm
fond of saying, then I think this is this is
This has an opportunity to be a bit of a
Thanksgiving weekend stunner.

Speaker 1 (11:52):
Is it safe to say, folks in the Greater Austin
area just going to keep your power to drive one
more week because it's like Travis and East Central and
less like commuted John's. And then we'll talk next week
about serious business about a lake Travis Westlake rematch in
the quarterfinals.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
I think both the Austin area teams are clear favorites.
I will say though, District twenty nine to six a
one of only two districts in the state with all
four teams still alive with East Central and Buda Johnson
probably aside, along with New bron Fols Canyon and Sibilo
Steel there in the D two ranks. But yeah, I
think it probably ends this week.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
Vander Griffin Steele, what do you make of that.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
One true fascinating ball game. This is a Vandergrift team
that remember they lost that season opener, and then since
then they have been a house on fire. They are
taking on a Sibilo Steel team that is loaded with playmakers.
Absolutely look Chad Warren or Jalen Cooper. They have got
dudes all over the field. It's this is San Antonio's
best shot. This is San Antonio's best shot I think

(12:49):
of getting a team to win the region, but this
is the big is a big hurdle for them because
a Vandergrift team that is playing really, really well and
with a ton of confidence. I think I took Steel.
I think they're fire power might be a little bit
too much. But I think this is a really interesting ballgame.
And if history is any guy who, then Austin will
continue to stranglehold over San Antonio.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
No doubt about. Okay, before I jump out of six A, the.

Speaker 1 (13:11):
Game you have you have Saturday night for folks in
the Desto and Willis. So if Texas jumps out to
a huge lead on Texas A and M and your
board with it or whatever, understand Uh, they're on your
local FanDuel network. You can see De Soto and Willis
there at the Star in Frisco, and you and the

(13:32):
inivitable Ashley Pickle will be on.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
The call for that. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:37):
I grew up dreaming of counter programming A and M
in Texas. It's just it's what a real dream for me.
It is a great it's a fabulous game. I think
Willis could do it. They're an underdog. They're an underdog,
but I think Willis can do it. They have got
if you've never seen them. They lose DJ Lagway and
mister texasball the graduation, and I think there's an argument

(13:59):
to be made that they are even better. In twenty
twenty four, quarterback Jack Emerson has been fantastic. They have
Dremaine Bishop, who I think is the Travis Hunter of
Texas high school football. He's playing both ways at a
super high level for them. But they are taking on
the two time defending sixth A Division two stay champs
in De Soto with Tiger Wrighten with Daleen, Singleton with
Quiel and Abram, I mean they're loaded for bear. I've

(14:20):
been running for a fascinating and high octane ballgame at
the Star. It's the final game of the playoff of
the weekend in the playoffs, and I think we're going
out to some good dessert for a Thanksgiving feast.

Speaker 1 (14:32):
Our regular Permian fan on the text line says, I'm
just wondering if North Crowley is comprised of actual humans
or AI generated monsters.

Speaker 2 (14:42):
If you guys didn't know. To his point and condolences,
North Crowley handed Odessa Permian their worst playoff loss ever
last week. I want you to think about Odessa Permian
and how long they've been playing football. North Crowley put
a hurtin on Mojo last week. It's a big reason
why I think North Rowley has gotten an opportunity to

(15:02):
be playing in Arlington at.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
The end of the year. Yeah, yeah, I know that
about it. Uh, I'm missed out on this.

Speaker 1 (15:08):
Somebody asking where is the the Hardened Simmons u U
M HB game being played? I think it's I think
it's an abling because Harden Simmons is the number two
overall national seed.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
I believe that's correct. That should it should be an aboling. Yeah,
that's that that should be where it where it is,
all right? And then I'm letta say that confident on
the radio.

Speaker 3 (15:30):
All right.

Speaker 1 (15:31):
And then somebody asked if you still hate our gyle?
Really actually got.

Speaker 2 (15:37):
That never dies? No, of course I love Todd Rodgers.
I love what that part of that. And I'll tell
you that's another team kind of flying under the radar
there playing exceptionally well. Uh. They got in a real
dog fight with which Tall Falls Memorial last week. I
do think that Region one of five A, Division two
is more even more treacherous than we saw they were

(16:00):
it was going to be, because you think about it this.
We've got a rematch of Lovejoy and Anna this week.
Remember that game the last time we saw it in
regular season playing district play that came in in sixty
six sixty two. I think we're going to have that.
And then you've got Argyle taking on a pesky, peski
Walnut Grove team, first year varsity program that's just coming

(16:22):
off of their biggest win in program history when they
knocked off a lot of Cooper. So I think we
I don't know our guys playing really well right now,
but they're gonna have to strap it up the rest
of the way because this is a this is a
dangerous path on the way to Arlington.

Speaker 1 (16:36):
I agree with you, and I've said that. You asked me,
and I told you I thought that the two most
interesting or fascinating classifications going into the playoffs for five
A D two and three A D one, and I
still stand by that.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
And by the way, five A D two it's getting
the judgment week here. We get Texas high and P
ANDNG this week that is going to be absolutely fascinating.
Richmond Randall takes on Brent this week that is really
tasty as well. Five day Division two is starting to
come to a head, and same with three eighty one
where we get our first real big state ranked tussle

(17:09):
with the Columbus or rather with Franklin taking on Hitchcock.

Speaker 3 (17:12):
Yeah, looking forward, to all of that. You're in Saint
Louis with family.

Speaker 2 (17:16):
I am, I'm in Saint Louis. I'm calling you from
the study room, from a study room at one of
the Saint Louis County Public libraries, because the boys are
off playing with mom and grandma.

Speaker 1 (17:26):
Oh that's very now. Listen, you have made no bones
of it, no secret of it. This holiday forty eight
hours out. That's your favorite holiday the entire year, isn't
it Thanksgiving?

Speaker 3 (17:37):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (17:37):
Oh yeah, no, Thanksgivings. Thanksgiving is the best day of
the year. That's what you think about it. It's football,
it's food. You don't have to bring gifts, like, there's
no like monetary expectation of you. Everything about it, Like
I want you to think about another holiday, another day
in which a nap is a key component of it.

(17:58):
I mean, that's where we're at with it. Giving is
by far the best day of the week, and then,
by the way, it leads into I think, the best
football weekend of the year. So it's just this is
the best. We've been counting down ever since, ever since
last Thanksgiving, and is finally is finally here. I'm excited.

Speaker 3 (18:14):
Yeah, we'll look forward to it.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
Hey, have a great have a great Thanksgiving feast, have
a great call Saturday.

Speaker 3 (18:20):
We visit next week.

Speaker 2 (18:22):
I'm looking forward to it. Happy holidays man YouTube.

Speaker 1 (18:24):
All right, that's Greg Tapper, managing at our Dave Campbell's
Texas Football magazine. He and Ashley Pickle will call that
De Soto Willis game on Saturday night.

Speaker 3 (18:32):
FanDuel Sports Network is gonna be. That should be an
awful lot of fun.

Speaker 1 (18:35):
And then we'll see about the quarterfinals what we have
in front of us. There could be some just absolutely
atomic matchups that I'm looking forward to. All Right, more
coming up here, we're gonna hear it talk a little
basketball next on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone
of the iHeartRadio app.
