Speaker 1 (00:00):
Back to Texas basketball. Actually, real quick, excuse me, General
quarterback Diego Pavia has been granted an extra year of eligibility.
So Pavia a motion for a preliminary injunction that would
allow him to play football in twenty twenty five. That
was granted. So Pavia, who, of course quarterback Vanderbilt to
(00:23):
that upset victory over Alabama this season. We'll be back
in twenty twenty five and we'll be coming to d KR.
So Pavia bought the law and won it. So excited
to see Diego Pavia. They take on Georgia Tech in
They're a ball game against Haines King. That will be
a fine game. Okay, back to some more sound from
Texas Longhorn point guard Julian Larry. Believe it or not,
(00:51):
and I'm sure Craig Way would know this, but Larry
actually was the starting quarterback for Frisco lone Star when
he was in high school. In fact, he was part
of a a ten win team. He played with Marvin Mims,
the Biller white Out NFL receiver. And so he was
asked today or yesterday, excuse me about what kind of
(01:12):
quarterback he was?
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Was a dual threat? Was he passed first.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
What kind of quarterback was Julian Larry, Texas Longhorn point guard,
former Frisco lone star quarterback.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
I definitely was a dual threat.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
I would say maybe not as quick, but you know,
a little little Lamar Jackson, little Michael Vick, you know,
that was me on the field.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
But I had good receivers as well.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
I played with Marvin Mems he plays for the Denver
Broncos right now. But we also have some really good
guys on the defensive side of the ball too that
are also in the NFL as well. It wasn't that
year when I played quarterback, but the year before I
played with Nick Bolton that starts with the Chiefs right now.
And then we got a few more. Trey Taylor, I
think he's with the Saints playing safety. So there's a
(01:57):
few NFL guys that I've played with coming to that school.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Yeah, his last year ten wins. The year before that,
he's mentioning it went twelve to two that season, the
Frisco lone start undefeated in district, played district championship and
got pretty far in Texas High school playoffs. Okay, so
now that we know he's a dual threat quarterback when
he's on the floor. Does he have the mentality of
(02:20):
being a quarterback when playing point guard?
Speaker 2 (02:22):
It definitely has.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Just being that guy that you know, the guys come
back to, ask questions and really, you know, getting my
other guys going. That's what I'm really good at, just
getting guys going and you know, bringing guys along. So
that's pretty much always been that for me and always
been that role that I've been in pretty much everywhere
I've been.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
So in the previous answer, he's you know, when I
asked what kind of quarterback he was, he said, I
believe what Lamar Jackson, Michael Fick. Now, if you call
yourself Lamar Jackson, Michael Fick, why aren't you still playing quarterback?
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Well, I would say I played like him. I wouldn't say,
you know, the level, the levels are a little different.
But just the love for basketball, you know, my love
for basketball and just how much time I put it
and how much work I put into it. You know,
that's what really had set me apart in those two
and had really just helped me make my choice.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Okay, okay, So does being a former high school quarterback
help him to the floor.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
Better right, Being a quarterback's definitely helped out just for
like passing angles as well, because you know, like football,
the ball can't hit the ground, but basketball the ball
gets a chance to hit the ground. So really just
learning those passing angles, like in the air to where
only my guy can get it for a layup, or
like this pass can lead him into a layup, or
(03:38):
this pass or this super quick swing will give my
guy a wide open shot. So really just helping out
with those passing angles and where.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
To put the ball at.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
It does sound cliche, but I do think Jewles does
see the floor differently. I mean, he had a no
look pass against Pine Bluff on Saturday. I think it
was to sarah on Yemma where he was on the
right side of the court half court, just whip in
a bullet to on Yema who went in for the layup,
no look past. Fantastic, fantastic vision. He's been fun to
(04:09):
watch so also, you know he's not afraid to throw
up an lu that may work out.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
It may now.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
There's been a couple of times this season where he's
been looking for Kendall Weaver or Kloom or somebody and
it's turned out of bouncing Rodney Terry on the Texas
bench not happy, but Larry does have impressive vision. Okay,
So two games up to go in non conference played
for Texas. Had some big wins NC State, Syracuse Saint
Joe's has some tough losses a Whio State ukun. So
(04:36):
what has Larry and this team learned about themselves so
far through non conference play?
Speaker 3 (04:40):
I would say that I'm learning that we're starting to
come together on the offense, and we're a really good
running team, like really really good when we're running. So
I would just say, like a key for us is
just getting stops. And you know, as we've continued to
play like we were continuing to see like we have
really good individual on ball defenders, So really just each
other on that end as well, like when to help,
(05:02):
when to not help, and you know that'll just help
us get those clean rebounds and get out in transition.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Yesterday the women's game last night, Joey Larry was there.
He's usually come to a handful of game so far,
I think, usually with his teammate Jason Kent, also from
India State, but I thought he was also with Nick Cody,
the freshman six foot eight freshman from Dallas, Texas, had
a season ending injury in his high school season last
year his senior year season, missed it, came back and
(05:30):
had his best game of his short Texas career against
Arkansas Pine and Bluff eight to ten shooting, had twenty
points two rebounds overall. What is Julian Larry's impression of
the freshman Nick Cody.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
I would say he's most efficient in the short roll
or either either in the short roll or getting downhill,
because I'll say he's a good playmaker once he gets
it in there as well as he showed, but also
transition because he's really good at running as well. He's
a gazelle out there are running. So really just hitting
him in his spots in that middle of the floor
(06:04):
in those short rolls, and hitting him ahead and transition
and just finding him on cuts as well, because he's
really good at cutting, like finding different holes and spots
within the defense. And I mean just really with the
older guys that we have, like Ken and Art, they
could really help him out with some of those some
of those things.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
Obviously, Larry transfer from Indiana State. You know, he's from Dallas,
from the Texas area, but you know, playing in the state,
now playing here at Texas. What has the transition been
like from Indiana State back to Austin.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
It's definitely been fun.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
I mean, I knew I was going to come in
and play with a bunch of super talented guys, so
I knew like that was gonna be one thing. But
really just just how we brought it together. That was
really my main piece offensively and defensively, and I'm I
feel like it's been coming together really well and we're
really showing it over these last few games, just with
our ball movement and our defensive connectivity, and we just
(06:54):
have to continue to stay consistent with.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
That last question for Julian Larry, he was asked about
the upcoming SEC play one of his thoughts and looking
at the rankings in terms of college basketball so far
through December's get closer to the new year, SEC is dominating.
You have Tennessee and Auburn at one and two, Kentucky
(07:17):
for Bama and Florida six and seven. You have A
and M at twelve, Oklahoma tend to know they're at fourteen,
ole Miss at seventeen, half the conference top twenty five,
and then you have Arkansas, Missouri just outside the top
twenty five, receiving votes at twenty seven and twenty eight,
and you still have Texas getting some votes there, just
(07:39):
seven votes and the last eight people actually excuse me,
just three vote three votes overall. So what does Jew
and Larry make so far of their upcoming sec folks
who have been playing so well so far this season
to start?
Speaker 3 (07:51):
Yeah, I mean it's definitely fun. Definitely fun. That's what
you come to Texas for to play the best. So
I mean it's not really like Darling looking at it
is like like you can't wait to get out there
and play against those type of teams because you know,
those high level basketball games is what we're here playing for.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
And what strikes you about the style of play really
some high scoring team run through uh.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
And just that fast pace of play and just knowing
like it's a thinking man's game. So I mean, it's
gonna be down to the most minute details to you know,
win these games. So that's what really sets to the
part is the pace of play and just those you know,
minor details that you have to execute to win these games.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
It's gonna be a very tough start for Texas As
they begin conference play. First game Texas A and M.
That's right, the A and M. Maggis that will be Saturday.
To believe, the Saturday, January fourth, the Cotton Holdings Lone
Star showdown in College Station seven o'clock tip. That place
will be rocket. Okay, we'renna be back to wrap up
