(00:00):
But glad to have you with us. First hour of the program visit with
Jared Sandler of the Texas Rangers RadioNetwork. If you missed the conversation,
or you want to hear it againor whatever, you can go to our
podcast page at sports Radio at Athirteen hundred The Zone dot com. You
can catch it there. And thenthe contest we've been talking about is giving

(00:20):
you an opportunity to win a copyof Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, the
brand new edition. I know somefolks have had a little bit of a
challenge finding it. It supposedly isin supermarkets like AGB and Randalls now and
Walmart. I think as well, but it depends on when the distribution dates

(00:44):
are to those specific cities. Butwe're giving them away. All you have
to do is take advantage of ourtalk back feature, and that's how we're
giving them away. We're not doingit through random calls like we've done in
some past years. And we've beengiving away this magazine since nineteen ninety eight
here on this radio station, allthe way up through twenty sixteen, and

(01:04):
then from twenty seventeen through last year. We did when it was across town
and now back here happily and givingaway the magazines again, happily giving those
away again, but this time we'redoing it different instead of random callers.
In case you haven't heard, theway that you do it is you use

(01:26):
the talk back feature on the iHeartRadioapp. If you haven't downloaded the app,
it's free. You just download thatonto your smartphone, your iPhone or
Android whatever. And then when youdownload the iHeartRadio app, it'll come up
the red screen first, and thenyou'll have different ones, and you just

(01:48):
enter AM thirteen hundred the zone, and in fact our station will come up
there. And there's two buttons, one that you just pushed to hear what's
going on in the air. Theother one is a button with a little
white microphone in that day, andyou push that button. Just leave us
a message fifteen twenty seconds something likethat. Don't the longer than thirty.
It'll cut you off after thirty. But you can leave us like a fifteen

(02:08):
twenty twenty five second message on whatyou enjoy most about the magazine or what
you look forward to reading most whenthe magazine has its annual arrival. Is
it the cover story in this case, it'd be queen viewers of Texas kind
of wigman of Texas, A andM. Is that the individual team breakdown?

(02:29):
Here's one on Sam Houston. RememberSam Houston is a Division one FBS
program. They're in Conference USA.Now maybe Texas State, you know with
the Bobcats, the favorite twin theSun Belt West Division this year, American
Conference with UTSA, Rice, North, Texas, Big Twelve with TCU,
Houston, Baylor, Texas Tech, and of course the SEC with Texas and

(02:52):
Texas A and M. Small collegewhatever it is. If you have what
you like and look forward to themost of reading the magazine, just leave
us a message on the talk back. We have ten copies to give away
to the first ten who do that, and we still have a few slots
available on that if you want toavail yourself with that coming up in a
few minutes. Well, we talkedto Major League Baseball last hour. We've

(03:15):
got some more college football to getto as well. But we're also I'm
gonna get a little clarification on somethingyou may have heard by now. You
know, college baseball has been ateleven point seven scholarships forever and ever and
ever, eleven point seven and basicallywhat college baseball coaches have had to do
is just kind of divvy up thepool. Very few players would get actual

(03:38):
full rides. They would get sixtypercent or eighty percent or forty percent or
twenty percent or just enough for booksor tuition or whatever. Well that's changed
now and Ty Harrington, of coursecoached at the collegiate level for so many
years, including twenty at the DivisionIE level at Texas State. Now broadcaster
part of our broadcast team will joinus to talk a little bit about the

(04:00):
differences and how it will work becauseit also affects roster size, so we'll
get his thoughts on that, Alsohis thoughts former Longhorn head coach David Pearce
joining the staff of Stephen Trout atTexas Tate in that special assistant role much
like what Troy Tulowitzki has done forTexas a special assistant to the head coach

(04:23):
type role. So we'll get histhoughts on those things coming up as well.
If you'd like to leave us atext, you can certainly do so.
If you just want to chat, you can certainly do that. Just
you know, text the word Texasfollow by your question or comment to eight
one five to three zero. That'stext the word Texas followed by your question

(04:45):
or comment to eight one five threezero. Standard messaging and data rates may
apply. We were talking about theTexans getting ready for the Hall of Fame
game, which is a week fromtomorrow. Do you have that on your
calendar? Now? Count down toan actual NFL game being played. I
know, I know, I knowyou're not gonna see any of the starters,

(05:06):
and I get it, I knowthat, but they are wearing NFL
uniforms. Might see Roshan Yeah,I think you don't Williams, but you
might see you might see Roshawn Johnson, Yeah, you might. Indeed.
Uh So Texans play the Bears inCan't Ohio in the Whole Fame game,

(05:29):
and it's a week from tomorrow night. So those of you, and I've
never quite well, I guess Ikind of understand, but I never quite
agreed with this mindset. But Iunderstand it when folks say, you know
that's you know, I just gointo hibernation until there's more football, and
I watch any football and and thosefolks are the ones for whom the United

(05:53):
Football League was created, by theway, and I have nothing against the
United Football League. Didn't Birmingham winthe championships and the wrong per Yeah,
I think the Birmingham Stallions won it, so congratulations to them. But you
know, they're there are people whowould rather watch that level of football than
watch NBA or Major League Baseball.I get it. I understand that's a

(06:15):
personal taste thing, and I wouldnot and I'm not knocking anybody's own personal
taste on that sort of thing. And I'll watch a lot of different that
they would rather watch that than, say, watch international soccer, and I
really enjoy international soccer or MLS soccer, you know. You know, so
there are some folks. So forthose folks, the Hall of Fame game

(06:41):
would be a right of passage andlike a high holy day because it means
it's the start of a pro footballseason, so to speak, you know,
at least inasmuch as is, youknow, you have some teams in
the NFL uniforms taking the field. You know, the Olympics is already underway

(07:01):
technically, Yeah, they started today, didn't they Soccer? Yeah, because
they have sixteen teams in there,so they had Actually that happens every four
years when they have a summer orWinter Games. They have so many events,
and they have so many nations inthe type of tournament like basketball or
you know whatever. In this case, soccer would be. It takes longer

(07:24):
to do, so they have to, you know, start it before the
actual opening ceremonies. And there aresome gam who actually finished their competitions on
the final day when you have theclosing ceremonies that night, that happens as
well. It's a Fortnite plus,is what that is. All right?

(07:45):
Up next, we'll get Ty Harringtonon with us and talk some college baseball
and what the scholarship limited and whatit might mean going forward for the University
of Texas, the newness that surroundsthe program now with Jim shlastninggis take over,
and you know what the roster makeuplooks like early on. So we'll
do all that and more coming uphere on Sports Radio AM thirteen hunder the

(08:07):
Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
