Speaker 1 (00:00):
Thanks for joining us. Glad to have you with us.
US of course includes to the producer of this program,
Cameron D. Parker. The dean on the birth certificate stands
for Dallas. That's his middle name, as in being named
the middle name for his favorite pro football team that
he has loved, hated, disrespected, admired, all of those kinds

(00:22):
of things. I'm not sure where to go with you
on this based on what Jerry Jones has been talking
about him, Like, what do you make of all of this?

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Oh, it's just Jerry Jones. It's Jerry being Jerry at
this point. Right, He's the he's the best sports No,
what's I think the right word here? He's the best
showman of the NFL who has not played a snap
of the NFL football. He is the greatest showman on earth,
right he is? Who is the actor and Hugh Jackman?

(00:54):
He's Q Jackman of the NFL, except he hasn't played football.
He played football, he won a National Chief Championship at Arkansas,
but he has not played it down of NFL football yet.
He is the NFL's greatest showman right now, in twenty
twenty five, So what's gonna happen. Michael Parsons, who knows.
I mean, I'm sure we have some sound today from
from Jerry and his much yesterday shot at Heimer's talking

(01:14):
right now and Auxnard, So who knows. But let's we're
gonna talk about Dallas. It's talk about the Texas Rangers
walk off two nights ago, I was I wasn't on
the show.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
And then last and then last night. Last night they
rallied t Lez. He was just a biscuit shy of
three hundred, you know, whatever delivers a big RBI single.
And Nathan Valdi is tremendous.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Six and zero in his last six starts, He's got
a zero point four to seven e r A. In
those starts, he's pitching his butt off.

Speaker 1 (01:45):
He Yankees have lost what five in.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
A row, seve in a row, and the Red Sox
have won seven in a row in a row. So
you're welcome, Boston. They're kitching up to Toronto, who has well,
I think they have the best ale record, but it
been kind of struggling since the All Star break, but
you know, we'll see.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
Yeah, Astros did win again over the Marlins last night,
so they're kind of riding the ship. You can get
healthy at the Marlins expense. You can do that. Also
in the National League, the chase continues in the East
between the Mets and Phillies. In the Central, the Cubs
are now four games back of the Milwaukee Brewers. It's

(02:24):
the largest deficit the Cubs have faced this entire season,
being four games back in the Central and in the West,
the Dodgers' leader of the Podres is still only three games.
After the Podres won an eleven innings, they were on
the ropes. Last night they beat the Diamondbacks. The Dodgers
finally got their bats going. Max months he's back in
the lineup. He hit two home runs last night. Toy

(02:44):
Oscar Ernandez hit two home runs. They beat the Cardinals.
But this is these are Pennant races. I think that
are going to go the distance. So it'll be something
to watch all the way through.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
And right now, I know our residents, resident Guardian fan,
I'm sure listening. Right now, there's a no hitter being
thrown by believe Gavin Williams through seven innings so far
and out against the New York Mets into the bottom
of the eighth where he's trying to keep that no
hitter going, so we're.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
Going to have to keep an eye on that. We'll
definitely do that. The other thing that we are going
to do is coming up in a few minutes. We're
going to hear from Long Orne had football coach Steve
Sarkeishian Sark from that media availability that followed yesterday's practice,
confirming obviously the season ending injuried Andrei Kojo that attacks
the depth of the offensive line, the right side, in

(03:36):
specific the right tackle spot of the offensive front. But
we'll hear him talk about the other things. So we've
got that. As Cameron mentioned, you'll hear some Jerry Jones
sound being asked about Micah Parsons and about things we'll
have that we do have inconceivable this hour as well.
And there's some other topics that we have to get
to also, so we'll plan to do all of that.

(03:59):
Yesterday on the program, UH, Vick Schaeffer, the Texas women's
basketball coach, was with us and or had him on
pop on UH and UH we heard some real interesting
things from him with regard to the team he's got
and what he's expecting from them. They're gonna do one
of these unusual things next week they're going to go

(04:21):
to Canada and play a series of exhibition games against
national teams. I think Brazil, I think Puerto Rico, Canada.
They're gonna, uh maybe France, they're gonna They're gonna play
some international games up there. They're just exhibitions, but with
his new group trying to get them ready. And yesterday
the women's SEC conference schedule was announced and they open up.

(04:49):
They opened conference player on New Year's Day in Columbia,
Missouri against the University of Missouri. They have to go
to Columbia South Carolina as well. They have to hit
both Columbias this year, play South Carolina there, but only
one match up with South Carolina. No home and home
like last year. Their home and home this year is
with LSU, so they get to face Mulkey in Baton
Rouge and in Austin. So it's it's a challenging schedule

(05:12):
for them, in addition to their non conference schedule which
has them at the Players Here Classic in Las Vegas
where they're going to play UCLA and then they could
see South Carolina there in a non conference setting or duke.
And then in addition that they have North Carolina coming
in and the acc SEC Challenge Texas The men of

(05:34):
course play Virginia in the acc SEC Challenge coming up
in December. And today the men's SEC conference schedule also
was released, and we're going to go over that coming
up here in just a few moments. We'll do that
in addition to those things. You know, are you surprised

(05:57):
at all that we've got another former sc football coach
running for political office? Oh? Who's this one now? Uh?
Well missed the story. Yeah, well you know it was
Tommy Tuberville. Yeah, Tommy Tuberville, who's in Congress now. And
you know, my my enduring memory of Tommy Tuberville was

(06:17):
when he was coaching Texas Tech and at the Texas
High School Coaches Association's Coaching School, we had that like
we do every year, the Division One Coaches Football Panel discussion,
and Coach Tuberville came up to me before we got
started and said, Craig, can I ask a favor of you?
And I said what's that? He said, We're supposed to
go till six thirty, right, I said, yeah, five thirty

(06:39):
six thirty goes. Is there any way you can get
me out by six fifteen? I've got to catch a plane,
and I said, I'll make a deal with you. I'll
get through these questions and i'll get you done by
six fifteen if you'll do an interview with me the
week of the Texas Texas Tech gave him Fody Goes deal.
So I accelerated everything. We got through. We got done

(06:59):
at six fifteen, which the other coaches in mind because
that meant they got to go to the reception afterwards.
Translation to Big Keg Saber, which made Dana Holgerson very happy.
So anyway, you know, walking over there and Tubverville as
he's walked out, looks over his shoulder and I'm looking
at him, and he goes and he points at me,
and he did do. I don't know how many campaign

(07:20):
promises he's made kept or renagnon, but he did do
the interview with me there, so he was he was
one of those. And remember when Tom Osborne served a
couple of sessions in Congress after he got done coaching
at Nebraska. Now you got Derek Dooley, Derek Dooley, Vince's son,

(07:40):
ex Tennessee coach, running for senate in Georgia, his home state.
So he announced his twenty twenty six Republican bid for
the US Senate in Georgia against Democratic incumbent Jehan Ostoff.
He's fifty seven years of age. He's backed by the

(08:02):
governor Brian Kemp and is a supporter of President Trump's policies,
and so he's another coach going down the political road.
But as we always have known, to be a Division
one head coach of a major college football program and

(08:23):
in some cases basketball, but especially football, is to walk
the political tightrope from time to time. You've got to
do that anyway, between athletic department personnel, your athletic director,
your university president, also your boosters, all of that kind

(08:43):
of stuff. So now Derek Dooley, who did not do
well at Tennessee as the head coach, he went fifteen
and twenty one as head coach of the Balls in
his three years there before he was fired in twenty twelve.
He's been an assistant for the Cowboys, University of Missouri,
the Giants, and University of Alabama. So anyway, he's the

(09:09):
latest to be added to that list. So, okay, coming
up next, we'll hear from long Ort's head coach Steve Sarkisian.
If you get some football notes, you get to as
I mentioned, we'll also have basketball news to bring your way.
We do have inconceivable this hour. All that and more
coming up on a yacht Rock Wednesday here on Sports

(09:30):
RADIOA in thirteen hundred the Zone, one hundred the Zone.
Coming off for the weekend and Long Oorne went back
to work, and not only the aforementioned big injury that happened,
but other camp developments as well. So let's hear from
Long wrt's head coach Steve Sarkisian. First of all, is
opening comments already.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
Really, it's been a good first six practices for us.

Speaker 4 (09:57):
You know, we had the first four day block, we took.

Speaker 3 (10:01):
Sunday off and then came back Monday and Tuesday with.

Speaker 4 (10:05):
Really competitive, tough practices. You know, Yesterday was half pads.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
Today was our first day and full pads and we
pushed the guys.

Speaker 4 (10:13):
You know, it was a it was a long heart
practice in the heat.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
I thought we were running really well with with a
lot of different aspects of the game that we've gotten
uh gotten ourselves into. Were Obviously we're through a lot
of the first second down work. I done plenty of
third down work and we just started the red red
zone today. So situational football is alive and well for
us UH as we'll continue to grow and and not

(10:39):
just installing plays, but learning how to play the game
the way we want to play it. So, you know,
really challenging the guys on on their mental toughness and
and what that takes and what that entails. As a
reason we practice in the afternoons because I think that
that's that does help develop that mental toughness. When you know,
fatigue sets in, can we remain focused? Can we still

(11:01):
be a tenant to the details. Can we play a
consistent brand of football when fatigue sets in? When it's hot, man,
when we're in the fourth quarter practice? So it was
a good start for for that for us today.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
So that was Sart's opening comments. And then he was
asked about what is this Cameron about hits guys hitting
and on the first day of impads that the hitting,
how that is that? Was that what this one is about? Here?

Speaker 2 (11:29):
I think this is from Kirk Bowls And he was
asked what was the biggest hit hit of the day,
day and and stuff, and it actually Sart kind of
went on a rant here, but he turned a question
that easily could have been yesterdor no into I thought
a really good answer about the level of physicality he
expects from his defense.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
The second week of fall practice.

Speaker 4 (11:52):
Oh man, I don't know, I don't know. That wasn't
wasn't just one big shot that that stood out. That
was physical.

Speaker 1 (12:03):
It was good.

Speaker 3 (12:03):
It was physical all day, which which I you know,
I liked. You know, in this conference. I think you know,
we knew going into last season, but probably gained even
more respect for this is a very physical league that
we play in, and the line of scrimmage is critical
both sides of the ball, and the consistency with physicality

(12:23):
in which we play the game, the pad level in
which we play the game. I think, the way you
have to try to run the football in this league,
and you got to you gotta find the hidden yards.
You got to find a way to make three yard runs.

Speaker 4 (12:34):
Five yard runs in this league.

Speaker 3 (12:35):
And and then the physicality on the perimeter, which we've
talked about before the season, so you know, we've really
been pushing that and challenging the guys on that. Like
I said, I'll look at the tape and see how
we did. But it felt that way.

Speaker 4 (12:49):
On the field. You know, I think one thing for us.

Speaker 3 (12:53):
Getting off side mark, but that's okay, I guess probably
what I want to know this, you know one thing
for us that I think with players that are trying
really hard, we have to learn to feel. We have
to learn how, we have to learn how to deal
with disappointment a little bit better. And what I mean
by disappointment is not every play is gonna go perfect,
and and you might miss a block. Okay, you might

(13:16):
not catch that ball, you might not get the yardage
you thought you were gonna get on the run, but
you gotta you gotta get onto the next play, and
you've got to give the next play the credit it
deserves because that next play has a life of its own.
And I think right now a little bit on offense,
we're trying so hard that there's this level of disappointment

(13:36):
that we're carrying some of that to the next play,
and some of those mistakes are compounding on top of
one another for certain players. So we've got to improve
upon that. And as a coach, once you can identify that,
you know, we we can talk to that, we can
coach to that.

Speaker 4 (13:50):
But I think that's something we can improve upon.

Speaker 1 (13:55):
Next was a question for Sar about Arch because Arch,
manning last year would go in and work with the
special assistant Paul Christ and of course the special assistant
position changes, and of course he's working with aj Milwee
as well as with Sark of course, so he was

(14:16):
asked a little bit about the different dynamic of working
with different special assistants and inclusive of this Paul Camp practice.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
I don't know a whole lot about those, you know,
I try not to get too involved when players are
having meetings like that, you know, because that's for them,
you know, for guys. If you guys are looking for
extra meeting time, extra work, you know that. But that
doesn't surprise me from Arch. You know, that's the way
he approaches the game. You know, he wants to be
really good. We had a walk through last night. I

(14:46):
thought it was really good walkthrough after practice yesterday and
I was leaving the bubble and I turned around and
Arch at the offense and about half the offense out
there having his own walkthrough with those guys afterwards. So
that's that's the way he operates, you know, That's just
what he does. You know, he's always going to try
to find an edge. He's always going to try to
make sure that he's in the best space to compete

(15:07):
at a high level.

Speaker 1 (15:09):
And then one other thing, and we'll have some more
from Sark in each of the hours. But one other
comment had to do with Dwayne and Keena's return to
the program and working with the secondary, and of course
there's some young guys in that secondary, and there's some
veterans as well, and Sark was asked about the mixing

(15:30):
of the young guys with the veterans and those younger
guys getting to know Dwayne and Keenan.

Speaker 4 (15:35):
Well, I think it's it's I think they're they're pretty good,
you know.

Speaker 3 (15:38):
I mean, remember they played for Blake Gideon, and so
there's a lot of Duayne and Keena and Blake Blake Gideon,
and so I think they got exposed to a little
of that. And I think Blake talked about the history
of the DBS here obviously having Michael Huff in the
building and and and just his kind of knowledge and
history based on us.

Speaker 4 (15:57):
I think they're they're very aware of it all. And
you guys know, you guys know Coach A Kein he's
not short on storytelling, either.

Speaker 3 (16:05):
So I'm sure they've got a hot stories that that
they've they've got a pretty good understanding of the history
and tradition of this place.

Speaker 1 (16:12):
Uh truer words never spoken, he said. Coach A Keena
is not without a story or two. He's got plenty
of those, and he's always great to visits. So anyway,
there's some some comments and some commentary from Longhorn's head
coach Steve Sarkisian will have more from sark during the
course of the program this afternoon. So I just wanted

(16:33):
to make you aware of that. As always, by the way,
we take the opportunity to give you the opportunity to
share with us. If you would like to text the program,
you're certainly welcome to do that. All you have to
do is text the word Texas while followed by your

(16:53):
question or comment to eight one five three zero. So again,
text the word Texts followed by your question and comment
to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging and data
rates may apply, and and coming up to the three
o'clock hour will give away two more copies of Dave
Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. Yesterday's question, which brought a couple

(17:15):
of winners was when the announcement was made in twenty
twenty one, the Texas and Oklahoma were leaving the Big
Twelve conference to join the SEC. How many teams were
in the Big twelve at the time, do you remember, cam?
I mean teams were in the Big twelve at the
time that Texas and OSEI ten ten is the correct number.

(17:37):
And the announcement, by the way, came I think three
weeks if it was. If it was that it might
have been. It might even have been like a week
and a half after Bob Bowlsby said on the day
is at Big Twelve media days that he did not
see expansion in the conference's future, that it was that

(18:00):
it was not that not critical or crucial or whatever.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
I think a lot of ads in the Big Ten
or the Big twelve at that point also decided that
Bob Bowlsby will not be in the future.

Speaker 1 (18:11):
Well, so Jackson's and Oklahoma leaves. Bowlsby steps down, Brett
or Mark comes in, and to your Mark's credit, he's
he's worked very diligently to try to get the conference
back up to a major company. They are a power
for conference. And maybe you have sixteen teams and now
they have a footprint that extends obviously as far east

(18:35):
as West Virginia, as far west as Arizona and Arizona State.
So he's he's got that in Colorado and Utah, he's
got the you know, the schools out there, so it
is it is spread out more thing. They're sixteen teams
now and you know, they've got markets covered like Cincinnati obviously,
although it was kind of surprising some that they were
not interested in adding Memphis to the league and Memphis

(18:57):
was willing to kind of foot its own bills two
hundred and fifty million dollars and they said thanks, but
for good. Yeah, maybe if there had been an eighteenth
team that they've been really wanting to add, and maybe
Memphis could have gone along for the ride, but not
to be. So that's why Memphis is still in the
American Athletic Conference. But the moving and shaking of conference realignment,

(19:22):
you just to get the feeling. It's it's almost like
we have earthquakes and you have after shocks and tremors,
and that there's still other you know, seismic activity that
happens within the realm of collegiate athletics. And we've seen
the latest chapter of that being the reconstituting of the

(19:44):
PAC twelve. After the PAC twelve conference basically disintegrated, with
USC and UCLA leaving to go to the Big Ten,
and then Oregon and Washington following suit, and Stanford and
cow going to the ACC, Colorado and Utah going to

(20:06):
the Big Twelve, along with Arizona and Arizona State, so
pretty much just decimated the league to where all that
was left was Oregon State and Washington State. But they
rolled up their sleeves and went about raiding the Mountain
West Conference, and they were able to get Utah State,
and they were able to get Fresno State, and they
were able to get Wyoming, and they were able to
get Boise State, and they were able to get San

(20:26):
Diego State, and they were able to add Gonzaga for basketball,
and then and they added Texas State as an eighth
as an eighth an eighth football playing institution, So it
would be exciting times for Texas State. I read that
story yesterday about through an open records request, the Athletic

(20:48):
was able to see a lot of the timeline on
what happened for Texas State in their endeavors and the
entreaties made from the PAC twelve conference to Texas State,
and after that the cost because it cost Texas State
somewhere in the neighborhood three million, two hundred and fifty

(21:10):
one thousand dollars to travel its athletic teams in the
Sun Belt Conference last year, and the travel this year
will probably be pretty similar for Texas State and its
final year in the Sun Belt. Then when they jump
to the PAC twelve, it's going to be over five
million dollars the expected travel cost in the first year

(21:33):
to travel its athletic teams, and that for some sports
it's going to actually double in terms of like men's
basketball and nearly double the women's basketball. It's going to
double more than double for baseball as well. For Texas State,
they're going to have over five million dollars in travel costs.
But the revenues expected to accrue from a move to

(21:56):
the PAC twelve will certainly help off set a lot
of that excitement in San Marcus about this move forward. Okay,
all right, coming up, we're gonna have inconceivable we'll get
to that. We do have a fast food update courtesy
of our good friend CB, so we'll get to that
We've got some other topics to get to as well.
We'll keep you updated on the Major League Baseball score.

(22:18):
Is that no hitter still going on one?

Speaker 2 (22:19):
Soto ended it with a big blast out to left field. Okay,
but I think Adam Williams came out and actually he
faced more batters and then took him out and could
not complete the complete game. But he did get a win,
and Guardians said win four to one over the Mets.

Speaker 1 (22:35):
Okay, all right, And the Mets have been stumbling of late,
as the Phillies have kind of recovered themselves, and that's
what we're talking about with these Pennant races. I do
think that in the National League, I think all three
races may wind up going to the wire unless the
Cubs fall completely off the cliff and the Brewers just

(22:56):
keep it in overdrive. Because they won ten of their
last eleven ball games. They have the best record in
all of baseball right now. Milwaukee's playing great. Chicago is
four games back of Milwaukee in the Central right now,
and that's the largest deficit the Cubs have faced this season.
So we'll see how that continues to develop over time.
But I do think the race in the East between

(23:16):
the Phillies and Mets will go probably all the way
to the very wire, and I think the same thing
will happen in the West between the Dodgers and the Padres.
The Giants have pretty much given up the ghosts. They
unloaded they were sellers at the trade deadline, so they're
off the pace. But the Padres are hanging right there
with the Dodgers, and they have two big series against

(23:37):
one another coming up later this month and then into September,
one series in San Diego and one series in Los Angeles,
so there's still a lot to go, and both teams
face contenders this weekend. The Padres play the Red Sox
this weekend, and the Dodgers are hosting the Blue Jays.
So in the American League, where the Red Sox have
been on a roll, the Blue Jays are still try

(24:00):
to pick themselves off the deck, as are the Yankees,
who have really struggled, and the Tigers have had some
stumbles of light, but they still have a pretty comfortable
lead in the Central and.

Speaker 2 (24:08):
The Rangers one nothing lead over New York, heeading to
the fourth after Sam Haggerty with a single to score
as equal Duran so the Yankees, possibly on the verge,
are being swept and stended their losing streak to six games.

Speaker 1 (24:22):
Yeah, I believe.

Speaker 2 (24:23):
So we're in that span, you know, August September, Craig,
where these teams are. They're right in the hunt for
a pennant, right in the hunt for a wealth cart spot.
They go on these five six game losing streaks, and
on the other side, a team goes on a five
to six game winning streak, and all of a sudden,
the playoffs look a lot different, but it's it's a
postseason baseball, and the lead up to it is awesome.

Speaker 1 (24:42):
The dynamics certainly changed from week to week. All right,
up next, we bring in Conceivable here on a Wednesday
afternoon on a thirteen under the Zone. Craig wait alongside
the producer Cameron Parker. Glad to have you with us
this afternoon. We are in the state of this afternoon's

(25:07):
show a little bit abbreviated, just a little bit. We'll
be done at what about four to forty five this afternoon,
camps that is, that's correct, Okay, four to forty five
Round Rock Expressive a double header in Albuquerque against the Isotopes.
So they their first game will be right at about

(25:29):
five o'clock, five oh five, so we'll be done at
four forty five this afternoon. So, and they're playing a
doubleheader including and this happens almost completely exclusively in minor
league baseball. It's happened a time or two in Major
League baseball, but it's rare. But the reason they're playing

(25:51):
a double header is because game two is the makeup
of a rained out game that was to have been
played in Round Rock. So that was back on July thirteenth,
so they couldn't play that game, and since Albuquerque's not
going back to Dell Diamond this season, the decision was

(26:12):
then made, Okay, they'll make up that game in Albuquerque
when they play. And that's a little bit different with
minor league baseball, you can do that. You don't often
have that kind of thing. But they do have a
doubleheader this afternoon, and it starts at four forty five

(26:32):
this afternoon, so we'll be done it for forty five.
It'll start at four fifty, I guess, so anyway, we'll
be done for that, just a little bit early from
what we normally have. What we do have this hour,
we're going to hear more from Logorn's head coach, Steve Sarkegan,
and we've got some other college football notes to get to,

(26:53):
but I was going to start off this hour with
some basketball notes, and also this hour we'll give away
two more copies of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. Will
do that coming up a little bit later on this hour,
but I did want to start off with college basketball
because the Southeastern Conference did release its conference schedule today,

(27:20):
so the Longhorns know that they knew which teams they
were going to play, and they knew where they were
going to play, but they didn't know exactly when they
were going to play. Now they know pretty much. And
the reason why I say pretty much, there are and

(27:41):
I'm just counting this just as I look at this
right now, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, Seven
of their games on the regular season schedule will be
either a Tuesday game or a Wednesday game. So they'll

(28:01):
still be waiting on, you know, the television memory in
a large measure obviously ESPN to make up its mind
on which games on they want on which day, and
all of the teams in the SEC have this on
their schedule where they have some games that are either
going to be played on Tuesday or Wednesday. Texas had

(28:23):
a couple of those last year. One of those was
the game at Arkansas. One I think was one in
Mississippi State that when they got closer to the time
to start the season. I think actually in the case
of the Arkansas game, it was the season was underway
when that decision was made, And that might be the
case again this time. But I can tell you that

(28:44):
where it stands right now, they've got every opponent in
each SEC market down and they know it will be
one of two days. So let me tell you about
the conference games first, and we'll go back and just
kind of review it all the way through the non

(29:06):
conference schedule that'll go with it as well. But the
conference conference play begins on Saturday, January third, at home
against Mississippi State. Which is interesting because last year, if
youn't remember, Cameron, their their game at Mississippi State was
the next to last game of the regular season they
had that that game they won, Uh, there was in

(29:29):
an overtime, I believe it was at Mississippi State. You
know it was an o t game. Yeah, it was.

Speaker 2 (29:34):
They won because Texas couldn't run the basketball correctly. Towards
the end of that game, the full court press really
gave Texas some fits. I felt like we spent about
a month in Starkville. I know it was technically like
maybe like three or four nights, and you actually spent
more time there because of Texas Baseball than I did. Yeah,
but let me just say three nights in Starkville is

(29:55):
more like a month.

Speaker 1 (29:57):
Yeah, and and uh because you had uh, there was
trouble getting out, So I flew in.

Speaker 2 (30:04):
From men's basketball Roger Wallace and the girls won that game.
It was tight, just like the men's game, but we
could not fly out that night due to issues with
the plane. That's a common theme with our travelers. So
I think we flew out the next day. Not that
it's anything necessarily with Texas. It's there's a combination of
weather factors and the charter companies.

Speaker 1 (30:28):
How shall I put this? Flight scheduling The scheduling of
its flight crews is the best way the availability of
flight crews forgiven, and that happened sometimes, especially in more
out of the way destination UH County Airport whatever it's called. Yeah,
So you're right, you got stuck there first.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
A lot of these these these same the same cruise
that you know, two weeks two days later they're flying
out another teams. So we got stuck there in the
men's basketball, we got stuck there also another night, and
we were in a hotel that was under construction too,
which was very interesting, uh, to add on to the
experience as well. So I think we were there I
think four four nights total. And then you spent time

(31:10):
because you drove down from Nashville from the SEC basketball
Tournament after Texas lost to Tennessee in the quarterfinals.

Speaker 1 (31:17):
Because the same still pardon our dust under construction by
Mary Eye. Yeah, yeah, and you'll remember, and.

Speaker 2 (31:25):
You were under you were facing Sephia weather, right, weren't
you guys?

Speaker 1 (31:30):
It got interesting read of Tarnago. It got interesting the
the that that that whole trip to Starkville, like you said,
that whole week of traveling was a rather bizarre one
for me because what had happened was the men finished
up the regular season at home against Oklahoma, won the
basketball game, and then you had already gone to Greenville,

(31:52):
South Carolina with women's team to start their play all
the way through the semifinals in the SEC Tournament, very
very early Sunday morning, I flew to Charlotte, drove to Greenville,
and no, actually I did fly into Greenville on that
on that event, the Charlotte was when they played at
South Carolina when they were playing Columbia. Flying to Greenville,

(32:16):
we do the SEC Tournament championship game, which Texas lost
to South Carolina. When it was over, then I drove
from Greenville to Nashville because we weren't going to get
back until late that night. And that is when you
guys got back from Greenville, right late that night when

(32:37):
you came back after the SEC Tournament championship game and
you flew home on the charter with the team. It
was late that night as you drove that right. Well,
I actually spent the night in Asheville, North Carolina. I
actually stayed in the hotel in Ashville that Sunday night,
and then I finished the drive on Monday morning into
Nashville because by then the men were flying in, so

(32:59):
you had to go back and get different equipment to
bring with the men.

Speaker 2 (33:03):
Yeah, we were, So we flew back Sunday night. I
think I got back into Austin pretty light about two
three a m. I was flying out that same that
same afternoon, I believe the next day to Nashville with
the men's team.

Speaker 1 (33:18):
Monday afternoon, like around one o'clock. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (33:20):
So when I get back to my car, its two
in the morning and my batteries dead.

Speaker 1 (33:24):
Oh that's right.

Speaker 2 (33:26):
Unfortunately, Fortunately I'm looking around like, okay, I have had
the coach is still here because the team bus had
already gone. So it's like, is there anyone nearby? Or
also am I just going to be stuck here? Because
my dad's not waking up at three in the morning,
My friends aren't waking up at three in the morning.

Speaker 1 (33:41):
You're not in Texas.

Speaker 2 (33:43):
But Rob Lazar, who is very well known inside the department,
the leg department, had his ha souped up diesel Dodge
a hemy truck whatever Dodge right, which.

Speaker 1 (33:55):
Which could kickstart an airplane engine?

Speaker 2 (33:57):
You know?

Speaker 1 (33:58):
Yeah? Yeah, it's diesel, so has two bad So I
was like, which one do I use?

Speaker 2 (34:01):
That doesn't matter, It's all right, It's it's enough to
you know, start up my little Honda. So but you know,
got home, slept for a few hours, and then was
back at the airport, uh to fly to Nashville.

Speaker 1 (34:12):
To Nashville well, I had, and I had taken a
little more scenic rude I went. I went up to Ashville,
spent the night UH, and then from there got up
the next morning and drove to Nashville, timing my arrival
to coincide with the team's arrival, and got there pretty
close around those same time. So I went into Nashville
and on the first night. Of course, Texas did not

(34:36):
play the first night of the tournament, and I actually
they were playing the first night we had that we
had the game. First of all, the Texas had to
open up against Vanderbilt in the SEC tournament and that
was an afternoon game, and we called that game in
the afternoon. Then you and Eddie Eddie Orang of course,

(35:00):
the broadcast partner went back to the hotel with the team.
I stuck around and called the Arkansas no the Georgia
Oklahoma game for SEC radio UH and did and did
that working with Matt Zimmerman, who's the analyst on the
Arkansas broadcast. They put us together. He said, how about

(35:22):
them putting a Texas guy in an Arkansas guy together
to call an Oklahoma game? But it was it was
George against Oklahoma. When we did that game that night,
and then the next day Texas plays Texas A and M,
and the Longhorns beat the Aggies in overtime. They won
that contest. And you may remember this because we had

(35:43):
our equipment so spread out. Keith Moreland had flown with
a baseball team, but he didn't have any equipment with him.
So when we got off the air for basketball, I
had the other set of equipment with me that had
done the women's basketball tournament. I drive that to Starkville
and get there about midnight, four and a half hour
drive and get there about midnight. I show Keith how

(36:08):
to set up the equipment because he's going to have
to call the series opener on Friday against Mississippi State
by himself because I have to go back because now
the long Runs have to play Tennessee and basketball. So
we had a little midnight tutorial at the hotel Me's
showing him how that particular set of equipment works. I

(36:30):
slept for about three hours, got up about five point fifteen,
and drove back to Nashville for the game with Tennessee.
Texas plays Tennessee, they lose to Tennessee. I jumped back
in the car check out of the hotel and drive
the four and a half hours back to Starkville. Friday,
Keith had called the game. Texas won the series opener,

(36:51):
the SEC Conference opener, and then to your point, Saturday
was stormed out in advance because of tonado warnings, and
so we decided to stay. They took the baseball team
over to Mississippi State to Davis Wade Stadium, the football stadium,
and then we're kind of down in a storm, sheltered

(37:12):
like here, down around the weight room, in the locker
room and all this stuff where it had been safe
had the tornado actually come through Startville. There were two
tornadoes and it happened to split and go around Startville.
One went to the north, one went to the south,
and I was told that was a pretty regular thing,
but just in case. Keith and I were hanging in
our hotel rooms and they were like, you're welcome to

(37:32):
come with us over there, and we're like, we're not
doing that. If the storm comes, we'll stand in the stairwell.
We're not gonna do that. So we stayed in that
and then they played a doubleheader on Sunday, long run
sweatboat games of the doubleheader and yes, with all of
the issues that had happened in the state of Mississippi,
not only in Mississippi State would try to fly out.
But remember we got stuck overnight at Ole, Miss with

(37:53):
men's basketball because of fog in Austin and the next day,
but the next day the team went to Baton Rouge
to get ready for LSU. I actually went home. I
got an uber to take me all the way to
Memphis and flew home because had a women's game to

(38:15):
call against Missouri. Came home and called that, and then
I flew commercial on Friday to get into Baton Rouge.
So it was some interesting times in that first year
in the Southeastern Conference. All of this to tell you
that the first conference game for Texas will be on Saturday,
January third, but it's at home against Mississippi State. Well

(38:36):
tell you about the rest of that schedule and how
it also aligns with their non conference schedule. And we'll
hear from longrn's head coach Steve Sarkisian when we continue
on thirteen under the Zone here on the yacht Rock. Wednesday,
somebody on the text line said, don't tell Donald Fagan
that Steely Dan is yacht rock. I know exactly what
you're referring to, just as cameraon. So you did end

(38:56):
up seeing the back half of that yacht rock documentary,
you yeah, And it's on the closing credits when he
calls Donald Fagan to ask him to talk about yacht
rock and he tells him to go do something specifically
with himself. So you know. Yeah. But whether Donald Fagan

(39:17):
and people know how much I love Steely Dan, but
whether Donald Fagan wants to admit it or not. The
genre of music, just as it changed and evolved for
the Doobie Brothers, it did as well for Steely Dan
into the genre we know is yacht rock. The show

(39:42):
the open we or in the first hour com out
of the first break with Asia, that's god rock. It
just is what we played at the end of the
three o'clock hour. Donald Fagan, I g y, you know
that's from the ninth Fly album, jot Rock. I think

(40:02):
it's because he and others categorized that as something smalty
and tasteless and this and that. It's it's a genre
of music, is all it is. That's all. But some
people don't like it. And it's okay. I understand that
as well, and all of our talk about the travels
to start bills, somebody said, what y'all didn't enjoy your

(40:24):
stay in Stark Vegas. I actually did enjoy several of
the things around there where. There was a restaurant that
we went to, and I know you'll remember this, Cameron,
that we went to with the team for a team
meal the night before the game, called forty four Prime.

(40:50):
And you have to understand that when you dine with
the team, quite often there is a prepared buffet. Now
it's really good food, but it's not like you're going
in and sitting down and ordering off the menu. They
do that sometimes, but a lot of times it's just
kind of laid out there for the team and that
sort of stuff. The buffet that they had laid out

(41:13):
was really really good. You did enjoy, right, if.

Speaker 2 (41:16):
I remember correctly, I think the mac and cheese was
some of the best that we had had. Yeah, really
good season, there was really good Yeah mistakes. That was
actually a really cool restaurant. And I'm trying to remember.
But forty four is.

Speaker 1 (41:31):
After about to tell you because it went back there
during baseball. Now, Baseball did not do a specific team
meal there like men's basketball, you know, the student athletes
on per diem, and they were doing different things and
all that stuff, different game time and all that sort
of thing. So Keith Wartland and I went and found

(41:55):
out that the forty four and forty four prime is
roy Oswalt, that's who it is. I it was a pitcher, yeah,
the picture former Great Round Rock Express pitcher and Houston
Astro as well from that area of Mississippi, and he
was one of the owners. We also found out the
forty four originally was Jerry West and that the restaurant

(42:17):
had started the chain started in West Virginia, and that
Jerry West had started, but roy Oswalt, who also had
the number, had had the restaurant down there, so it
started from that. And of course Jerry West is no
longer with us. Roy Oswalt certainly very much a live
and kicking and they said he comes by every now
and then and does that. So it was a really nice,

(42:38):
really nice restaurant, and we had went through in that,
so that part was good. I found a great little
cafe for breakfast that Keith and I went to on
Sunday morning called the Startville Cafe, right in the middle
of downtown. Start going. Yes, there is a downtown. So
we went there. And so you find these places you
know when you go on the road. I used to,

(42:59):
you know, I know places all around the cities of
the Big Twelve Conference. And I'm learning the ones in
the SEC as we go. For some already knew, some
other ones I'm still learning, all right. Speaking of the SEC.
In taking a look at this long worn basketball schedule,
I mentioned their conference opener is on Saturday, January through

(43:22):
Now again that the times are all TBAs so we
don't know yet. It depends on what TV wants to
do and that sort of stuff. So their conference opener
is Saturday, January third against Mississippi State. Then either the
following Tuesday or Wednesday, the sixth or the seventh, they'll
play in Knoxville at Tennessee facing Rick Martins Tennessee Volunteers.

(43:47):
They followed that up with a Saturday game on January
tenth in Tuscaloose, Alabama, playing the University of Alabama like
their Coleman Coliseum. Then they come home for Tuesday or
Wednesday game thirteenth or fourteenth of January against Vanderbilt, followed
by on Saturday, seventh January seventeenth, the Cotton Holdings Lone

(44:10):
Star Showdown matchup with Texas A and M. The first
of the two games with the Aggies. It's a home
game on January seventeenth. Oddly enough, the next day, Sunday,
January eighteenth, the women play Texas A and M at
home in the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown, but the
men do on Saturday the seventeenth, followed by a game

(44:31):
either the following Tuesday or Wednesday, twentieth or twenty first
at Kentucky. They play Kentucky at Rupparena. Everybody I think
who's following these athletic programs at Texas pretty closely also
knows that the Monday that precedes that, January nineteenth, is
the night of college football's National Championship. It is certainly

(44:51):
the hope of long worn fans that Texas would be
involved in that in that national championship game. We'll see.
But on Tuesday the twentieth or Wednesday, the twenty first,
they play at Kentucky, followed up on Saturday the twenty fourth,
with the first of, oddly enough two games against Georgia.
They have a home and home with Georgia which is

(45:12):
a little bit odd, but they do. On Saturday, the
twenty fourth, Tuesday or Wednesday twenty seventh or twenty eight
they play at Auburn Saturday, January thirty first, they play
at Oklahoma. Tuesday or Wednesday, February thirdy fourth, they have
South Carolina at home Saturday February seventh, Ole miss at

(45:33):
home Saturday February fourteenth. They have their midweek open date
on the schedule that following midweek, and on the fourteenth
they play at Missouri, followed by the Tuesday or Wednesday,
seventeenth or eighteenth of February against LSU. Saturday February twenty first,

(45:55):
they play at Georgia. Wednesday February twenty fifth, they have
Florida at home. Saturday February twenty eighth, they play at
Texas A and M. Then on Tuesday or Wednesday, March
third or fourth, they play at Arkansas, and they will
conclude as they did last year in the regular season

(46:15):
at home on Saturday, March seventh against Oklahoma. So that
all right. So that's how the conference schedule looks now.
Remember they'd already released the non conference portion of the schedule,
and it starts on Tuesday, November fourth, during the open

(46:36):
date week for football. It starts on Tuesday, November fourth
in the Dick Vi Taal Invitational in Charlotte, North Carolina,
the Spectrum Center where the Winnet's play and where Texas
played a couple of years ago in the NCAA tournament.
Quite the heady challenge they played Duke. So the first
game for Shawn Miller's head coach of Texas Longhorns will

(46:56):
be against the Duke Blue Devils and the long Warts
have never beaten in basketball, and they'll play in Charlotte.
The home opener is Saturday, November eight. That is the
open date Saturday, the second open eight Saturday for Long
Worn football, so there's no football conflict on that day. Saturday,
November eighth, Lafayette at home at Moody Center, followed up

(47:19):
by three more home games Wednesday, November twelfth against Fairley Dickinson,
Saturday November fifteenth against Kansas City, and Tuesday, November eighteenth
against Writer Writers remember correctly Trenton, New Jersey. Then it's
off tout. It's off to Malli for the Southwest Mallui Invitational.
I think the Southwest there is Southwest Airline, says the sponsor,

(47:42):
where they'll play at the Lehiina Civic Center, and Texas
will play Arizona State. It's listed as a ten o'clock
tip off, probably going to be closer to ten thirty
because there's a game before it at eight o'clock, but
Texas will play Arizona State on Monday the twenty fourth.
The next day or evening, they'll play either Washington State

(48:06):
or the host Shamanad on the twenty fifth, and then
on the twenty sixth, they'll play one more game. If
they won their first two, they'll be in the championship.
If they won the first and lost the second, they
would be playing for third place. If they lost the
first and won the second, they'd'd be playing for fifth place.

(48:26):
That'll be in the championship round or the final day
of the event. On Wednesday, November twenty sixth, it'll be
Cameron Parker's first trip to the Hawaiian Islands. It will
be I'm excited. You haven't been to any of the
Hawaiian islands, have you.

Speaker 2 (48:40):
I really haven't been out to the west coast. The
farthest west I've been has been Las Vegas.

Speaker 1 (48:45):
You've never been in the state of California.

Speaker 2 (48:47):
I never been in the state of California. Wow, my
travels have not taken me there. It'll be my first
time in Columbia Missouri this year. If I'm on that
trip first time, you'll like that Arkansas. If I'm on
that trip, first time, the Athens, Georgia, and first time
the Auburn, Alabama first time, the Knoxville, first time the Lexington.
So a lot of first times, possibly depending on where

(49:09):
we go.

Speaker 1 (49:09):
Now.

Speaker 2 (49:10):
Funny enough, it wasn't my first time the Harrisonburg, Virginia
last year when I went and called the Texas women's
game against James Madison.

Speaker 1 (49:17):
So I'm looking forward to the travel schedule. It's going
to be a lot of fun. I mean looking at
the schedule here. Oh and by the way, after Maui,
they played Virginia at home of the acc SEC Challenge,
Then they played Southern University. That acc SEC Challenge game
is Wednesday, December third, Monday the eighth against Southern, Then

(49:37):
Friday the twelfth, they play Yukon at the Excels Center
in Hartford, not at Gamble Pavilion. They play them at
the Mall as they call it. They'll play Yukon. On Friday,
December twelfth, they come home for a non conference game
against Le Moynese. They're from Syracuse, New York. On Tuesday
December sixteenth. Monday December twenty second, they play Maryland Eastern
Shore and that's their last game before they start conference

(50:01):
play in the aforementioned matchup with Mississippi State on January third.

Speaker 2 (50:06):
The schedule seems a bit more balanced in conference play.
I mean, last year the schedule was so tough for
Texas to begin with, play played I think four ranked
opponents in their first five games, and eventually all five
would be ranked at some point throughout the season. Now,
it is tough to go Tennessee and Alabama within a

(50:27):
span of possibly four or five days, and you come
back home against the venerable team that did beat Texas
once last year, Texas had beat him another time in
the SEC Tournament.

Speaker 1 (50:36):
Both games were in the city of Nashville.

Speaker 2 (50:39):
Overall, I think it's a fair schedule. I don't think
Sean Miller would go on to fix Schaeffer type rant
like he did yesterday when seeing the women's basketball schedule,
because that is that's a very very Texas women's basketball
my guess, will have either the number one or the
number two strength of schedule heading into the NCAA Tournament
this next season for women basketball, how that thing is

(51:01):
built out, especially, they might see you South Carolina three
times next year, possibly four, possibly four or five maybe
in the tournament, and then you play UCLA as well,
maybe early on.

Speaker 1 (51:12):
Who was the one seed last year. I think the
most they can play would be four because they're only
playing them once in the regular season. That's in Colombia, okay.
But if they play him in Las Vegas, that would
be two. If they played him in the SEC tournament
that's three. And if they were to meet him in
the NCAA tournament somewhere but they did last year in
the final four, that would be four. So they could

(51:32):
play them as many as four times. The one TV
you don't want to play five, and that's who they
That's what happened last year. I remember they played him
four times, split with them in the regular season, beat
him in Austin, lost him in Columbia, then played them
basically in the game Cock's backyard Greenville, which is how
far from going ninety miles? I think I.

Speaker 2 (51:52):
Think there was what that that Arena bonzikurs Wells held
eighteen thousand, I think seventeen thousand and five hundred.

Speaker 1 (51:59):
It was actually you're thirteen thousand tolls and twelve thousand,
five hundred were South caro At fans. Yeah. So yeah,
but they could play them as many as four times
again next year, like this year this past year when
they ended up meeting them in the final four as well.
So we'll see if that turns out to be the case.

(52:19):
All right, coming up, we're gonna hear more from LOGRNS
hit football coach Steve Sarkisian here on Wednesday. I'm thirteen
under the zone. Glad to have you with us on
the program. If you like to text the program, feel
free to do so. You text the word Texas followed
by your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
Like the guy who said, ope, you have a sweet
tooth because there's some cupcakes on that non conference men's

(52:41):
basketball schedcher, you're exactly right playing Duke and yukon those
are cupcakes, right, I know what you mean. But I
think you're also well understanding that in today's college basketball
scheduling philosophy, you have to do both. You have to

(53:02):
you have to have a mixture, and I think some
fans in the past have not understood that and are like,
why would they play a team like Lafayette at home,
or Fairleigh Dickinson at home, or Kansas City which used
to be Missouri Kansas City, or writer those schools at home?
Why would you Why would you play those schools? Why
wouldn't you load up with Duke in Virginia and this

(53:23):
and that and so on and so forth. There is
a scheduling science to it. First of all, you want
to not have too much of any one thing. You
don't want to have too many quote unquote cupcakes on
the schedule because if you do, it really hurts your
net ranking for college basketball, which we know is a

(53:46):
major tool employed by the NCAA Tournament selection committee. So
you've got to play some tough out of conference opponents,
and if you play them away from home, it helps
you enter the conversation Duke. The Logorns had played Duke
several times. They have never played Duke in the state
of Texas. This goes back to Mike Krzyzewsky. No, because

(54:11):
they would not play Texas anywhere in the state of Texas,
let alone Austin, Texas coach k did not want to
do a home and home. He would only consent to
play Texas in a neutral site, mainly in the Northeast.
They played him in the Meadowlands one year. That was
the year JJ Reddick had I think he scored forty

(54:33):
points or some ridiculous amount he blew out Texas, which
was the day, by the way, those in two thousand
and five, that was the day that Reggie Bush won
the Heisman Trophy for Vince Young that night after Texas
had gotten blown out for his first time, and I
think the last time or next the last time that

(54:54):
they wore the black uniforms alternate uniforms. So right said, oh,
it's the uniforms. No, it was JJ Redi they can
do c really. They played Duke in Greensboro that was
in the NCAA tournament, lost by five, played him really tough.
That was in two thousand and nine. They play Duke

(55:14):
in Madison Square Garden two or three times. But and
and Duke has maintained this philosophy. They do not want
to play a home and home with like Texas or
several other collegiate opponents, but to play him in a
one off situation like this, the stick by Tal invitation,

(55:35):
which is in Charlotte, so basically in their backyard. It's
what two and a half hours to do him from Charlotte. Okay,
but it's you know, there's a lot of Duke alumni
in Charlotte. It'll be a Duke home crowd, sure, sure, so,
so there's that. Just like when Texas played in Greensboro. Now,

(55:57):
greensbe was a little bit closer to Chapel Hill and
durham M.

Speaker 2 (56:00):
I was one of maybe eight Texas fans in that
arena when.

Speaker 1 (56:04):
They played that game. Now North Carolina was willing to
play Texas home neutral and then what I like to
refer to as neutral home. For example, like what Cameron said,
they played North Carolina in Greensboro, Corey Joseph hitting a
game winning shot when Texas won that one. They played

(56:25):
them in the first ever basketball game at Jerry World
in Arlington, Dexter Pittman at a big game. Texas won
that one. They played them in Chapel Hill twice and
Texas won one of the games and lost one of
the games. They played them in Austin. If you go back,
even when Dean Smith was coaching all the way back

(56:46):
to nineteen ninety five. But even during Rick Barnes' time,
they played them a couple of times in Austin and
Texas won both those games. They beat them at home
when Rick Barnes was coaching, and then of course Javon
felle at the game winner to beat them at Irowin Center.
So they they played. And then they've played North Carolina

(57:06):
in the NCAA tournament. Uh they played them in Denver.
Uh so they've they've uh, they played North Carolina in
a variety of facilities, but do only wishes to play,
like say, in a neutral site or neutral home site
in this case environment. And it really, really and truly
is kind of like that. Up in the Northeast. They
got a big alumni base in the New York City area.

(57:27):
That's why they don't mind playing games in Madison Square
Garden or at the old IAD Center, Brendan Berner in
at that Meadowlands Arena. Nowadays, if you play one on
the Jersey side of that, you play them. If you
play a non conference game on the Jersey side of
New York City, you play where the where the women

(57:49):
played at the Prudential Center in Newark last year on
MLK Day. So that so they have that. So let's
let's let's count it up. So the Texters asked about
the cupcakes or whatever. Duke certainly not a cupcake if
you want to say Lafayette or Lafayette, since they're coming
from Pennsylvania, not Louisiana, Lafayette, Fairleigh, Dickinson, Kansas City, and

(58:12):
Rhiner Writer, if you want to put them in that category,
that would be there. In Maui, Arizona State would not
be a cupcake, Washington State, I don't think would be.
Shamanat obviously would be. They'd be a D two score,
and you don't know what the other one would be,
but it's probably going to be a quality Division one opponents.
You have the potential playing one cupcake in Maui and

(58:34):
two really good teams. Then you got Virginia not a cupcake.
Southern you can put in that category. Then they play
at Yukon. So that's seven games. Now, non cupcake. Lemoyne
would make it seven quote unquote cupcake games, following Maryland

(58:54):
Eastern Shore, which would be eight. So if you're looking
at the math, there's like seven games that are quality
D one opponents, and then eight that are called so
called by games, buy by games where teams accept a
fee to come in and play you. So and that's
before jumping into SEC play. So anyway, that's I think

(59:20):
put it this way, that non conference schedule that Texas has,
no matter what you may think about a collection of
some cupcakes on the that non conference schedule is not
going to put Texas in any danger if their SEC records, Okay,
if they're playing all right in the regular season the SEC,
that non conference is not going to hurt them in
terms of the evaluation of the tournament's election committee.

Speaker 2 (59:40):
No, and Texas had a pretty weak non conference schedule
this past season. Didn't really beat any top twenty five teams,
I don't think before conference play even started, and still
got in. It tells you how much the committee thinks
of the SEC. This schedule, you're playing Duke, who will
be probably a top five team in the country. Yeah,
Yukon who you expect to be a top twenty five team.

(01:00:00):
We'll see about Virginia, and depending on what happens in
Mawwy too, you're looking at a possible top twenty five team.
It doesn't make any sense Craig for a basketball coach
or a team to schedule just top five or top five,
their top five team, because you want to give your
team by the first off, this team is brand new, Creig.
I mean there's still players who aren't even on a
campus yep, because they're playing overseas or playing for their

(01:00:21):
country right now. Of course you need a period of
time or sure they'll play top teams like a Duke
or Arizona State in Mawley, but also against the southerns
and the Leamoyes, because you need your team the first off,
developed chemistry, but most important, develop confidence, especially when you
go into the best college basketball conference in America.

Speaker 1 (01:00:41):
Yeah. So you know that's no college program is gonna
schedule you know, fifteen top fifteen non conference games that
would be don't need a suicide. You don't do that.
You gotta have conference play. Yeah yeah, and then have
conference play. So let's hear a couple of things from

(01:01:02):
logrn's head coach Steve Sarksian uh start in uh talking
about and this was after practice was asked for an
injury update. And this includes obviously the unfortunate news about
Andre Kojum.

Speaker 3 (01:01:16):
Yeah no, yeah, Andre is sustained a season any injury
and hate that for him. You know, he'd been he'd
been working hard to get himself in a competitive state,
and so it will get him healthy. We'll support him,
just like we've done a lot of other guys who
have had injuries in the past. You know, at this point,
you know, to try to go on the portal and
find a tackle, you know, I might as.

Speaker 4 (01:01:38):
Well go to the co op. I might have a
better shot over there or so, No, I'm not I'm
not going to try.

Speaker 1 (01:01:42):
To do that. Yeah, that's the SoundBite of training camp
so far. When they asked him about and I don't
know who was asked him, and somebody said, well, you
think you might go into the portal only by almost
mid August, I mean he was still early August, but
still August, to try to get somebody to come in
and can transfer in, make sure they qualify academically. It
would be an offensive tackle and jump right in that

(01:02:04):
can play Division one sec. Congratulations, you're playing at Wild Stateleeque.
You're better off just trying to train one of the
offensive linemen and get in right into that. So that's
why I said, I'm better off just going to the
co op. Yeah, yeah, so there you go. All right,
we come back. We'll wrap up our number two here
on thirteen Under the Zone for an and final hour

(01:02:26):
of the program here on Sports Radio A and thirteen
Under the Zone. Craigwag with you on a Yacht Rock
Wednesday alongside the producer Cameron Parker. We're going through to
about what four forty five and then it's Round Rock
Express Baseball because they have a double header in Albuquerque, correct.

Speaker 2 (01:02:43):
Yes, Because the rains of Africa hit Round Rock early
in July, you know, that July weekend and the weekend
after that.

Speaker 1 (01:02:50):
Yeah, I was on vacation and it happened right going
into really the Sunday that the day before the SEC
media days, Yeah yeah started and you guys, you and
Harts got out of town, you know, just in time, right,
I mean that stuff was bad for a couple of days. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:03:08):
We we we were able to get to work around it, uh,
to get out there. Because you usually think July, I
don't worry about traveling at all, but June early July,
like the last two years, you know, the weather has
uh it's been a little bit cooler, but we've gotten
a lot more rain, which means a lot more humid.
So I'm not sure how I feel about that give

(01:03:29):
and take. You know, I'm not I'm not a big
fan of humidity. I don't think anybody is. I would
much rather just take the dry heat. Yeah, you know
you grew up with humidity.

Speaker 1 (01:03:37):
Yeah, it's part of the reason why my my dad
was a native North Carolinian and fell in love with
the state of Texas. He came in own business. He said,
I don't feel like every time I walk outside, I
started beating up, meaning beads of sweat. Just the moment
you step outside.

Speaker 2 (01:03:53):
You feel your your your shirt starts sticking to you,
can't starts sticking to you.

Speaker 1 (01:03:58):
A lot of that, you know what can get that
way this time of year, although it can be really
nicer this time of year as well. Is Chicago. Chicago
can weather can be really good. The River, yes, and
the Great Lakes Lake Michigan there, but you know, nevertheless,
Live Golf is in Chicago this weekend, cam Oh going
head to head with the Yeah and and they're playing

(01:04:24):
at the bowling Brook Golf Club in bowling Brook, Illinois.

Speaker 2 (01:04:29):
So I see you're on the all the media emails
and stuff.

Speaker 1 (01:04:31):
They sent me stuff all the time. I'm looking to
like forward it to you because I know.

Speaker 2 (01:04:35):
So you must have signed up for that, then, supporter
of the I don't ever remember signing up for that, Okay,
so help me out here.

Speaker 1 (01:04:45):
You got you got Bryce And to Shambeau on the cover,
that's John Rahm right, that looks like Bubba Watson. Yeah,
for some reason, I know why he's in the cover.
I don't think he's And then who's this Okay? Yeah,
all right, so there is on the front for Live
Golf Chicago this weekend. This is coming up this weekend

(01:05:07):
in the bowling Brook Golf Club. You know. The other
thing that that I think is really interesting about Live Golf,
They play a lot of golf courses that don't have
like a historic grand reputation. Am I right? No, you're
you're spot on. They don't play like River Era, and

(01:05:29):
they don't play Aronomy Ink, and they don't play oak Kill,
and they don't play Page Black, and they don't play
you know, wing Foot or Oakmont or even like a
Sedgefield in Greensboro. They play bowling Brook, I know, to
be a bedroom community of Chicago. Now it may be
a great, great golf course. I'm sure it's gonna be

(01:05:52):
good in order to draw a Live Golf event. But
they play, they seem to play a lot of these
events in golf courses that I'm not that familiar with.

Speaker 2 (01:06:01):
Yeah, you know that they play I believe Merrido for
the Dallas event, which is which is a great golf course.
But I think you know, i mean, the only other
course I know that they play on that was once
on a PGA Tour event is Trump Derral. But besides that, yeah,
and you know, not actually knowing anything, I wonder, Craig,

(01:06:21):
if it's just some of these those clubs that you mentioned,
just thinking like, okay, if we get in bed with
Live Golf, will this prevent us from hosting a PGA tournament,
will prevent us from hosting a USGA event?

Speaker 1 (01:06:35):
Uh? PGA event? Uh?

Speaker 2 (01:06:37):
Maybe maybe something else. I think a lot of golf
courses were kind of wary of that. And maybe straight away,
I'm sure Live Golf has approached all those clubs, wing Foot,
Aernam Inc, Riviera, Pine Valley, would you ever be interested
in hosting us? And I'm sure you know a lot
of them have you know, maybe some sort of interest.

(01:06:58):
But they also don't want to burn any bridges because
is hey, when this whole thing first happened, you know,
j Monahan came out and was like, you do anything
with that, You're dead to us. We're looking at you, Valhalla,
We're looking at you.

Speaker 1 (01:07:11):
Kill.

Speaker 2 (01:07:11):
If Live Golf would team up with Valhalla, so we
would not have to go there.

Speaker 1 (01:07:14):
Or COI holla, go for yeah, do both?

Speaker 2 (01:07:17):
Yeah, live please, and then we don't have to watch
the tournament anymore on the PGA tour.

Speaker 1 (01:07:21):
Yeah, it's just me. Yeah, well yeah, so you wouldn't
have to watch the tournament, the Live Golf tournament.

Speaker 2 (01:07:29):
Man, you still watch the PGA event, right if it's
that fall up. I barely want to watch golf at Valhalla.

Speaker 1 (01:07:35):
Why.

Speaker 2 (01:07:36):
I just don't like I think the winning is it
PJA Championsip, The winning score is what like almost thirty under.
I mean, let let's let's see some golf courses that
make the golfers think. And I think a lot of
what Live Golf plays are courses that don't make you think.
So actually, Valalla kind of fits in there.

Speaker 3 (01:07:50):
Now.

Speaker 2 (01:07:51):
Quah Hall is a tough golf course, I'll give it that,
but outside of that Bowling brook. You know, there's a
lot of fantastic golf courses in Chicago. So what if
they went like Pineers number eight. You know, they didn't
play Pineer's number two. Say they went to Pineer's number six.
I heard good things about eight. But you know what,

(01:08:13):
what if they went to another Pinehurst? What if they
just played the par three course or the Cradle, Yeah,
the Cradle of the part recourse.

Speaker 1 (01:08:20):
How about that? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:08:21):
I mean, you know, it's funny that the premise of
Happy Gilmore Too. Have you have you watched it yet?

Speaker 1 (01:08:25):
I have not, so it's been caught up in the
Gilded Age. We finished season.

Speaker 2 (01:08:30):
One, so we're all to be confused with Happy Gilmore
Too at the Gilded Age. The whole premise is this
upstart golf league, you know, is competing against you know,
the other golf league. And it's it's funny because you know,
it's supposed to be the PJ Tour First. It's basically
PJ Tour First live, right, But on the PJ Tour

(01:08:50):
in the movie, you have guys like Brooks, Captain Bubba Watson,
and they're making fun of this new upstart golf league
It's like, is.

Speaker 1 (01:08:57):
The irony not lost here?

Speaker 2 (01:08:59):
Like you got Bubba Watson and making a cameo like
he would actually be on this new.

Speaker 1 (01:09:04):
Golf league that's on the Renegade. Yeah, somebody on the
text line said, hey, quiet jj Reddick just scored again
on a j Abrams. Yeah, a big game that day,
no matter who was guarding him that day at the Meadowlands.
When do Big Texas But Long Worts will play them

(01:09:27):
on November eight, The conference schedule was announced today as
well as a non conference. Let's hear some more from
Long Worts head football coach Steve Sarkisian. We just heard
him right for the top of the hour talking about
losing Andre Kojo. So then he was asked, what about options?
What are his options right now at right tackle?

Speaker 3 (01:09:44):
No, I mean yeah, we're looking at different options and
different people. You know, Brandon is a heck of a player.
We're excited about him. But we move Brandon around some too. Again,
we've never tried to be just a one dimensional group,
especially early on in the first couple of weeks of
training camp. We're always mixing people around because I don't
know what might happen. In week four of the season
or week eight or week twelve or week fifteen.

Speaker 4 (01:10:06):
You know, it's a long long way to go.

Speaker 3 (01:10:07):
So we got to keep developing our people, and we've
got plenty of good people in that.

Speaker 1 (01:10:12):
Room and we'll be okay, okay. So that's there at
right tackle. You mentioned Brandon Baker obviously the incumbent or
the at least the year apparent there. They have their
first scrimmage coming up this weekend. What about his thoughts
on the scrimmage on Saturday.

Speaker 3 (01:10:25):
Well, I don't know if we adjust our scrimmages so
much early in camp, because we need that information we
need to find out, We need to we need to
give guys opportunities to tackle, because that's the only way
we can gain information on.

Speaker 4 (01:10:38):
Guys tackling and guys getting tackled.

Speaker 3 (01:10:41):
We tackled for you know, a portion of practice today,
which we needed to do. And so there'll be portions
of the scrimmage that have been in the past where
we tackle, and they'll be portions of the scrimmage where'll
be thought and we'll stay up. But that that information
is needed for the coaching staff and for the players.
It's it's you have to do it because we have

(01:11:03):
to play a real game, you know, August thirtieth two,
and we're gonna have to get some real people on
the ground or that could be a long day and
we're gonna get tackled by good people.

Speaker 4 (01:11:12):
And so you have to practice football to get good
at football.

Speaker 3 (01:11:16):
But again, once we kind of get into those last
couple of weeks getting closer to the game, we'll start
to pair back on that and then we'll get into
our n season mode. And we adjusted that last year,
and once we got going, I thought it was fairly
effective for us the way that we did it.

Speaker 1 (01:11:29):
Okay, next is a question with the tight end position. Now,
so much has been written and said about Jack Hendrees,
the Cal transfer. Come in Jack Hendry, Jack Hendry, He's
gonna be the guys we have tied end. In fact,
today today, this morning, Jack Herey's name was added to
the preseason watch list. Not for the John mackew Ward,

(01:11:50):
although I expect that'll be coming in just adn't minute
ounce yet, but for the Buleitnt Cough Award. That's right.
The Blitant Cough Award recognizes the college football seasons outstanding
FBS receiver, regardless of position. That's how highly regarded Jack
Hendres is. Now clearly he'll be on the on the
John Mackey Award watch list as well. Well. What about

(01:12:12):
the others at the tight end position? Sark was asked
about that.

Speaker 4 (01:12:15):
I think that group is working hard. I've seen a
lot of growth in Spencer Shannon.

Speaker 3 (01:12:19):
The credit to him, obviously. You know, Amari had a
very good Spring and he's continuing to grow.

Speaker 4 (01:12:26):
It's it's been excellent having Nick.

Speaker 3 (01:12:29):
You know, Nick is fearless, he's tough, he's physical, he's
got great ball skills, he's has it. He didn't get spring,
you know, he didn't have those those bank reps of
fifteen practices that Amari got.

Speaker 4 (01:12:38):
So he's learning on the fly.

Speaker 3 (01:12:40):
But we see the athleticism of the playmaking ability that
that those two guys have, and so we're in good
shape at that position.

Speaker 4 (01:12:46):
I think, you know, Jordan Washington is a guy who I.

Speaker 3 (01:12:50):
Hated missed the majority of spring, you know, with the injury,
but he's come back and has showed some some really
good things and he made he made a couple of
nice plays yesterday in the red area, botha Mauri did
to your point with the tight ends in the red area.

Speaker 4 (01:13:03):
Those guys have been weapons for us.

Speaker 3 (01:13:04):
So again it's a it's a good room with good depth,
and it's they're really good for us on special teams
as well. So the fact that that room, he probably
have the most able bodies in that room today that
we've had in our five years here now.

Speaker 4 (01:13:18):
So I think we've done a nice job recruiting that.

Speaker 1 (01:13:21):
Position onto the wide receiver spot. And he was asked
about the Stanford transfer emittt. Mosley and the learning curve
that Emmitt's going through with this team.

Speaker 3 (01:13:31):
Yeah, Emmett, I'm impressed with You know, he is a
bigger guy than you think, even for me, you know,
I I you know that to remind myself, he's two
hundred and ten pounds, okay, And so the fact that
he's very smart, he's got extremely strong hands, and he's
probably faster than I think too. Everything about him is

(01:13:53):
probably better than you would think. We're fortunate with him.
The system that he played in at Stanford I think
helps him in his transition with us because it's there's
similarities to the way it was taught conceptually. I think
I spoke about this last time as opposed to maybe
Matt Golden. When Matt came to us from Houston, Matt

(01:14:14):
was coming from an air raid system, totally different way,
the way that they teach the offense and the way
that you learn a system and nothing.

Speaker 4 (01:14:24):
Every system is different, all right.

Speaker 3 (01:14:26):
But when it's like you live in the US and
then somebody drops you off in France and you got
to learn French.

Speaker 4 (01:14:31):
On the fly, that's tough.

Speaker 3 (01:14:33):
That's tough to do, as opposed to to somebody who
maybe is living in Canada and then moves to the US.
It's not that big of a difference. They probably got
some similarities. So Emmett is probably a little easier for
him than maybe it was for Matt when Matt first
got here.

Speaker 1 (01:14:47):
All right, there's some more there from Kurt Sarkov. Next,
we're gonna hear from Brian Schottneimer, the Cowboys head coach,
when we continue on thirteen Under the Zone,
