Speaker 1 (00:00):
The final hour of the week, the Monday through Friday
grind that we all go through. I'm glad to have
you as we continue on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
of the Zone. Coming up in a few minutes, we'll
talk some baseball. Will step away from football ever so
briefly to visit with Gene Watson and play a personnel
director of the Chicago White Sox. You'll join us to
talk some baseball as the Pennant races begin to heat up,

(00:24):
so we'll have that with Gino coming up. But we'll
go back to some football and we'll hear more from
Long Wort's head coach Steve Sarkisian this hour as well.
Obviously we've heard from Long Worn players, We've heard from
Rodney Terry talking some basketball, and we heard from coach
Sart from last night's edition of Longhorn Weekly. So you know,
plenty of football to get you into. So here we

(00:46):
are into this final hour of the program this afternoon
and of the week. So Cam, let me ask you
a question here, you know, here we are getting ready
to have this final hour of the program here, getting
this underway before we get ready to football. What when

(01:07):
you were watching and We talked about this earlier in
the program, but we were watching last night. Do your
mind as you were watching, say, the college games and
the high school games that were going on, did your
mind just drift over to what tomorrow may bring for
the Longhorns and the Colorado State Rams.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
And my mind's been on that for the last week
or so, Craig, to be honest with, You're just getting
ready for first Friday Night tonight in high school football,
and then tomorrow and college football. And it feels like
the the ramp up to the season is a little
more expedited because you know, we have week zero right
with more games, and it felt like the SEC media
days it was like two weeks ago. So it doesn't

(01:48):
even feel like we have really much of an off
season anymore. So, but super excited some you know, great
football last week, great football last night, and should be
a lot of fun tomorrow. And you know, still looking
at this weather, I think we're going to be okay
for Texas and Colorado stawn.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Yeah. I don't know that the players or coaches will
really be that broken up about this thing, as long
as it's not just like monsoon like you know, and
really impedes what you could do offensively, and these in
this day and age of field surf surfaces, you know,
things drained off, run off pretty quickly. It wasn't that
long ago what I could remember what it was like

(02:26):
having to deal with, you know, fields that got absolutely
soaked and became a mud bog. I pointed out that
back in nineteen ninety six, the long ORNs had their
first ever Big twelve conference game. It was their season opener.
They opened with a conference game when they played Missouri
at home. Ricky Williams was beginning a sophomore season, coming

(02:48):
off that nine hundred and ninety yard freshman campaign. It
was the final year of the Southwest Conference and the
Long Orange won the final Southwest Conference title ever, beating
Texas A and M on the Aggie's home field beat
him Mikyle Field to stop. I believe a thirty one
game home winning streak something like that. Won that one
sixteen to six and won the final ever Southwest Conference championship.

(03:12):
They went to the Sugar Bowl and they were up
ten to nothing in the second quarter of Virginia Tech
and had a couple of mistakes made gave up a
big pump return for a touchdown, and then Jim drucken
Miller how about that or name for the past, led
the Hokies back to a winner of the Long Horns,
and Texas finished that season ten two and one. So
they go ten to and one, and then they get

(03:34):
ready to start the conference, the Big Twelve Conference, the
brand new Big Twelve Conference. In their first game as
a Big Twelve Conference member was against Missouri. So they
get in and it's a pretty competitive game in the
first half, and then the Skies opened up and it

(03:55):
was an absolute torrent came down. Lightning delay stopped the
game at halftime, and it was just coming down in sheets.
It looked like waterfalls, and the water was coming down
a lot of the bleacher steps as the folks made
their way inside, and I know a lot of folks
probably remember this as well. And they came out for

(04:16):
the third quarter and Missouri was backed up deep inside
their own ten yard line and they had a fumble
or a black punt, and then the long runs ended
up taking advantage taking it in and then they just
moved on from there and just kind of blew the
game open after that. And that was one of those
storm affected games I remember Iowa State. There was a

(04:37):
game in Austin several years ago, probably around fifteen years ago,
that had to be stopped for lightning delays. And we've
had other ones, but the most prolific one in my
mind was the game in TCU back in twenty thirteen,
and that was about a three hour delay storm delay.
Mac Brown always told the story about how parents, parents

(05:00):
of players were helping to make peanut butter and jelly
sandwiches for them to eat, and they'd gone out to
a I think it was a Popeyes or or something
like that and just got as many box meals as
they could just to feed the guys, all that sort
of thing. So it was probably in proposation. I don't

(05:21):
think we'll have anything like that tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Hopefully not, Craig, hopefully. I remember I was in North
Carolina had a place called Taco Mac. I think they
changed the name that t Mac. Me and our dad
were just sitting there and this is like before I
had Towyter. We're just sitting there kind of waiting for
the game to come on. An hour goes by, two
hours ago, buy three hours goes by, and this game
going to even happen, and then sure enough it came on.
I mean it must have been I don't know, ten

(05:44):
o'clock Eastern time. Do you remember when that game? Oh wait,
it was pretty late for us. Yeah, I think I
watched the end of it before. Texas was feeling pretty
good about themselves at halftime.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Yeah, and they wanted it was, you know, well after
midnight when it got two three am.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Looks like it.

Speaker 1 (05:59):
Yep, yep. It was a long day. It was a
long night. And I remember also there was a game
of our friend Dave Hunziker. He and his radio analyst
John Holcombe describing the Oklahoma State was playing Tulsa early
season game and they had massive storm delays. Him. For
whatever reason, they were kind of I don't know if

(06:21):
ordered is the right word, but they were instructed to
stay on the air, which they did for a long time.
And it went well after midnight before they finally got going,
and the game ended at like around four o'clock in
the morning. So it was a long, long day. All right,
Enough about all of that. Coming up, we're going to
talk some baseball with Gene Watson from the Chicago White
Sox front office. We'll do that when we continue on

(06:43):
