Speaker 1 (00:00):
Good afternoon, everybody.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred the Zone. We bring it to you from Htown,
here in Houston and in specific.
Speaker 1 (00:10):
At the home of our brother and sister.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Cluster of stations iHeartMedia here in Houston, which of course
is home to Sports Talk seven ninety KBME, which is
our long worn radio network affiliate in Htown as well.
My name is Craig Wait. Glad to have you with
us alongside. Why are we.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
In Houston, you would ask?
Speaker 2 (00:33):
A pretty important announcement made this morning here in town
and between the University of Texas and Texas A and
M that involved the athletic directors of the two institutions,
the ut vice president and director of Athletics, Chris del Conti,
and Trev Alberts, the athletics director for Texas A and
(00:55):
M University, and Andrew Montic, the play by play voice
of the Aggies of Texas A and M.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
And yours truly were.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Fortunate to be asked to be a part of this
thing today because the announcement was the return of the Lone.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Stars Showdown rivalry series.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Now, we've known obviously that Texas and Texas A and
M were going to be playing each other again. Ever
since the announcement came down three years ago that Texas
would be joining along with Oklahoma the Southeastern Conference and
that became effective for twenty twenty four, we've known that
that since we're going into the SEC, Texas and Texas
(01:37):
A and M, we're going to be playing each other again.
And of course they have met in other sports and
men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, tennis, golf, track and field,
swimming and diving, just about everything but football, and they
haven't met on the football field in thirteen years the
last time they did. And long Worn fans finally remember
(01:57):
Aggie fans perhaps remember not as fine the walk off
field goal Justin Tucker, the forty yarder at the end
of the twenty eleven game that the Long Wornes won
that contest, and then the rivalry kind of rode off
into the sunset, at least from its Big twelve perspective.
But now in this new day in time, this new
(02:18):
day and age, it is a brand new rivalry, or,
as they would say here, a restoration of the rivalry.
The keyword there is restoration, because not only was this
announcement made this morning about the Lone Star Showdown. You
may remember if you've been a fan of either program
(02:38):
or even just remembering this, and it probably started, I
guess in the late nineties, certainly in the two thousands,
the Lone Star Showdown series, and it had different corporate
sponsors behind it, and the way it works is similar to.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
The way the.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Director's Cup works for points for.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
Athletic success.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
And it was sponsored by two or three different companies
over the years. Well, a group based here in Houston
called Cotton Holdings is the sponsor. And the reason why
I said restoration is the key word here is because
for those of you don't know, if you're wondering what
Cotton Holdings is, it doesn't have anything to do with
(03:27):
the fabric cotton.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
It's not that.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Cotton is described as a leading infrastructure support services company
in the twenty billion dollar US commercial restoration market. And
what they do they have a global disaster solutions, roofing logistics,
even culinary environmental support solutions. In other words, they really
(03:53):
and truly are, as they say, a full circle restoration
and construction services company as well. So for those businesses
and folks who have had problems due to hurricanes or
other environmental conditions, they perhaps contact Cotton's Global Disaster Solutions
(04:14):
or their environmental support services, things like that. And they
have offices spanning a lot of the country, but their
headquarters are right here.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
In Houston, Texas.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
So they are the sponsor of the Lone Star Showdown
Rivalry series. And as everybody said, it's kind of apropos
that this is a restoration of this rivalry in that
Cotton Holdings, a restoration services corporation, is your corporate sponsor
(04:49):
at this deal. So that's what the press conference was
this morning for to introduce the corporate sponsor. Now I
should tell you a couple of other things that are
kind of humorous. They they had individual press conference or
breakout sessions you might say interview breakout sessions after the
(05:13):
press conference. But in the press conference itself, the way
it was structured was the folks from Cotton. This was
in their headquarter building here in Houston, and what they
did was to have their CEO of this company of
(05:36):
Cotton Holdings, Pete Bell, the founder and the CEO speak. Obviously,
they had Crystal Conti, the University of Texas Vice president
and Athletics director, and trev Alberts, the athletic director for
Texas A and m Speak. They had Andrew Monico, my
good friend and play by play counterpart voice of the
(06:00):
Texas A and m Aggie's and myself give a little
bit of perspective on the rivalry itself and what it
has meant over the years and things like that. So
we had a very small part in it, but the
main event, obviously was the athletic director's volve man. So
you're gonna hear from them coming up on the show.
Coming up here in just a few minutes, we'll hear
from Christal Conti. It's right after the actual press conference itself,
(06:25):
and it's kind of a breakout media session with the
gathered media, and I've got some questions in there.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
You'll hear Kirk Bowles.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Who now writes for the newspaper in this town, the
Houston Chronicle, even though he still lives and lives in Austin, Iale.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
You'll hear Kirk Bowles.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
You'll hear several other media members, Dandy Davis, Austin American statesman,
several other ones asking questions of Christal Conti. So we'll
hear that coming up here in just a few minutes
in the three o'clock hour, I had an opportunity to
have a one on one with Trev Albert. It's the
Texas A and M Athletics director, so you'll hear that
(07:02):
as well about what this rivalry means, the restoration of it,
and that sort of thing on the other side of
it as well. So it's the way the series will work.
As we mentioned, it involves points, much like with the
Director's Cup, based not only on the results of the
(07:23):
football game, which of course this year will be on
November thirtieth, on Saturday, November thirtieth at Kyle Field in
College Station, but also points accrued and awarded for success
between the two institutions whenever one defeats the other. And
the first one out of the box is going to
be volleyball coming up in September when Texas plays in
(07:45):
College Station against Texas A and M.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
That'll be the first of those matchups.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
So there's going to be a point system and points
will come from that, and then there's you know, at
the end, there's a big lone Star Showdown trophy, So
it'll be that sort of thing home at the Mothership,
as we would say, they're holding down the fort the
producer Cameron D.
Speaker 1 (08:06):
Parker.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas as
in the pro football team from the National Football League.
That is the rooting interest of his father, and so
he was given that as a middle name, Dallas. It
is also for Cam as well, although he has pledged
not to watch them this fall, but to continue to
follow him. How are things back in the ATX today,
(08:29):
Cam Craig.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
It is very hot, as I'm sure you know it
is in Houston as well. One hundred and three degrees today.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Man.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
The good news is that it won't be one hundred
and three when Texas plays Collorail State next Saturday, just
about ninety three degrees. But my first question for you
doing great? By the way, have you enjoyed how surpies yet? Frenchies?
What's the food update here? I'm living vicariously through you today.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
You know what my food update has been so far? Starbucks? Okay,
that's been it. You know, I left that house uh
in Georgetown, very very early this morning, and I wanted
to make sure I was down there, uh at at
Cotton Holdings in time and found my to find my
way down to where the press conference was going to
take place and all that sort of stuff. So, uh,
(09:15):
there was one one stop on the way down, and
then uh, at lunch time, I raced over the U
I heart a media Houston headquarters or here on what's
known as the South Loop. And for folks who don't
know that, if you if you've ever been to the Galleria,
(09:37):
it's not far from there. It's it's it's uh in
the general vicinity of the Post Oak area and the Galleria.
So uh, there's a there's a big old Starbucks right
nearby that I've visited before, and I just raced right
through it and grabbed something and threw it down and
then got right here in the studio. So I'll I
(09:58):
may figure out a dinner option on the way back
or something afterwards. But no, nothing, nothing for which you
may live vicariously, at least to this point. So just
letting you know, but maybe afterwards there'll be a story
to tell.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
All right.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
Coming up next, we'll hear from University of Texas Vice
President director of Athletics, Chris del Conti.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
It was the.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
Media cluster around him afterwards asking questions. He had a
great moment in the press conference. I just have to
tell you a great moment, because when words started to
trickle out that the University of Texas and Texas A
and M would be having a joint press conference on Thursday,
(10:49):
August twenty second, When words started to seep out, it
immediately caused a brush fire of speculation. Does that mean
they're going to move to a neutral site? Does that
mean this thing?
Speaker 1 (11:04):
What's gonna what's gonna happen with this? What are you
gonna do? Well?
Speaker 2 (11:07):
It did not escape the notice of CDC, and he
stood up there at the news conference and just deadpanned
was saying, we're excited or looking forward to this press conference,
and then he just looked, he looked straight out into
the audience and said, and uh uh this we will
be playing this at a neutral site. And you could
(11:28):
have heard a pin drop and you could have and
then you could have heard this cracking noise that was
the That would have been the sound of heads snapping up,
all the writers and reporters looking like what And then
he goes, I'm just kidding. So it was a way
to play off of that, and you'll hear that in
those comments from CDC coming up. So it's a Thursday
(11:50):
afternoon here in Houston, and we'll continue on sports Radio
AM thirteen under the Zone, and the iHeartRadio app.
